100th Episode Celebration

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. This is actually Wale, I've written in my notes here. I didn't mention this before that this is a special episode.
00:00:20
Wale Bakare
but Nice.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
One hundred apparently. I literally just clocked that in my notes. Yeah. um Should have mentioned that before Wale, but yeah, put you on the spot. It's episode one hundred of the Daily Palace podcast.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We've got here. How have we how have we done this?

Origins and Growth of Podcast Network

00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, any any highlights while I leave for you of episode 100?
00:00:42
Wale Bakare
Well, ah it's quite interesting because you know there's one part of me that thinks, oh, as as if has it been Andre already? But then there's another part that remembers towards the end of the season when you know this um when a couple of us were he thought were recruited and then the the idea was floated by the uh by the guys and in the network and it does feel like a long time ago to be honest and to have done 100 episodes what it means is we would have done of course the plan is to do an episode every day but there's been days where say it's international uh break and we've just said we'll just you know take a couple of days off but 100 episodes is a lot
00:01:28
Wale Bakare
i I remember just when you know we had the chat, the four of us originally, and then five when ah Dan, I think Dan was the last to join in.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think so, yeah.
00:01:45
Wale Bakare
And then, to be honest, fair play to Dan is probably taking it more seriously like better than by the rest of us. And then Finn, you decide now to do other things.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:01:56
Wale Bakare
but it's It's been great you know knowing you guys. We've had some interesting conversations beyond you know the poet, but as as as far as the poet is concerned, it's a process that is growing.
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:09
Wale Bakare
The hope is that you know in ah in in some months we we'll be talking about hundreds of episodes and we'll be talking about great listenership based and you know, a lot of amazing guys following.
00:02:22
Wale Bakare
I know there's, you know, as so so as I said, it's a process

Network Expansion and Inclusivity

00:02:25
Wale Bakare
that's growing. So as a network itself, you know, the the global sports podcast network is growing as well. I remember it's all the Premier League teams and the women's league.
00:02:35
Wale Bakare
And then there's guys doing in Italian and Spanish and um Saudi Arabia. And then, you know, there's, I think the cricket as well was talked about at some point.
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:45
Wale Bakare
So that's growing Brandon. It's pretty exciting and it's something personally I enjoy doing it because it takes me away from you know serious work and of course this is serious business as well but then you know talking football and I now find myself as you know I'm i'm a Liverpool fan and My love for Palace is just out of the fact that, you know, Victor Moses played for Palace.
00:03:10
Wale Bakare
A couple of African guys played for Palace and I've worked for Palace and I love the couple of players. And I thought, well, I'll do Palace. It was supposed to be challenging for me because I didn't want to do Liverpool who I was a fan of.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
hmm nice one yeah it sir yes it's it's just it's like you slightly say it has it seems like it's gone very quick that
00:03:23
Wale Bakare
I thought I'll do Palace. That's the team I can relate to it. And to be honest, I've enjoyed it. ah loveve I've enjoyed it. Awesome.

Balancing Emotions with Professionalism

00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
we've got to 100 but
00:03:38
Wale Bakare
How's it like for you considering, because I know you, Dan, well, Finn as well was, but but you guys are Palace fans and you've watched Palace all the time. So it has to be difficult because when I come on a podcast, there's a part of me that is, yeah, I love Palace, but there's a part of me that is doing it as a job or as something I need to do. And sometimes I can take, you know, Palace might have lost scandalously five nil to us now.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks for the reminder.
00:04:07
Wale Bakare
you of But but you you have to deal with that emotionally and then still do the part. And not not just that, but see like some nights when palaces have won a game and you're having a drink or two with your friends, but then you have to record the part as well.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

Passion for Crystal Palace

00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mate yeah i find like it's obviously it's just natural conversation isn't it because the conversations i have with you guys on here is the same that i'd be having with my friends who are palace fans and my family um and it's just that same stuff really whatever ah whatever i've said to them i say to you guys on here basically um so it's very natural for me but yeah it's it's hard to put the emotion to one side i must admit um especially when we're losing because you can see, especially with this team, you can see the potential that we have. And like we underperformed at the start of the season, it's so frustrating to sort of have to relive all the mistakes and like all the, you know, all the highlights like preparing for each part. It's like, oh my God, like we really have to watch that again. But um yeah, mate, just talking about Palace is like, it's a bit of a dream for me, to be honest, like,
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah like I was saying to you before like I cover football but it's like big European stuff and like the bigger teams like Liverpool and Arsenal and that they obviously get more the headlines but it's just nice to have a bit of an outlet to talk about Palace and like discuss things um yeah like transfers or the on-goings and like now that we're doing quite well it's um it's actually really nice to do it but
00:05:17
Wale Bakare
No.

FA Cup Match Insights

00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, though those first few months of the season were tough, man.
00:05:41
Wale Bakare
see
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not going to lie. um Yeah, having to talk about like losing to Everton and stuff like that is just tough.
00:05:49
Wale Bakare
Back to back games, by the way.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh right yeah it's just
00:05:52
Wale Bakare
back
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah It's all coming back now, but yeah, it sir yeah we're doing all right at the moment, which is good. um so yeah The way we wanted to start this pod before I actually checked that was that while I wanted to asked you about our result last night in the FA Cup. So we'll just touch on that quickly because I know the guys discussed it yes yesterday. But um did you manage to catch the game? What what were your kind of thoughts on it?
00:06:19
Wale Bakare
It was a good game. was I saw the game because it was was the only there were two games on yesterday, I think, but then it was the only one I was interested in. Incidentally, I didn't see the Liverpool Game of Game, so I needed to see one. I saw Brighton Chelsea, I needed to see one more game, but it was a good performance, although so i've i've I've been seeing a lot of guys on other forums saying it was maybe a game Palace was expected to win, but then I think
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:50
Wale Bakare
but What does that even mean, not just in football, but particularly in the FA Cup?

FA Cup Strategy vs Doncaster

00:06:55
Wale Bakare
what What does he mean when you say that it's a game you should win? Although you can forgive them, because honest lot was saying the Plymouth game was a game Liverpool should win.
00:07:03
Wale Bakare
But obviously, it's the FA Cup that I'm not really sure there's games you should win. You just there's games you you could win. when yeah Because even Man City, you know, I had to do it was hard work for them against Leighton Orange, I remember.
00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:18
Wale Bakare
Man United went on to win the f FA Cup last season, struggling to beat Coventry ah in the semi-finals.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, semi-final, yeah. Yeah, that was a really good game, that, yeah.
00:07:31
Wale Bakare
That's what you get with the FA Cup. and um And yesterday, um I liked the fact that Palace ah controlled proceedings, you know so to a large extent, ah created a number of chances.
00:07:47
Wale Bakare
It's not very often the Palace, even when Palace win, it's not very often the Palace have the more possession of the ball. But that that was that was the situation yesterday.
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:07:58
Wale Bakare
and you know great goals the uh freaky idea was fantastic uh the finish by the venue was glorious and it was it was a comfortable victory uh so to speak so it was was a good performance for me and um i had I just looked and saw, oh, now there there's eight teams.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:23
Wale Bakare
Let's see ah what then happens with, ah you know, I mean, there's 16 teams rather than mixing it up with the Champions League now.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:30
Wale Bakare
because
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not there yet, mate.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not in the Champions League yet.
00:08:32
Wale Bakare
<unk>
00:08:34
Wale Bakare
but So that now it's the fifth round. Let's see what then if you know if if if it turns out to be... ah Well, it's Millwall now. If you get a victory against Millwall, then if you get lucky in the next one, and then you could be talking about a semi-final in Wembley.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:08:49
Wale Bakare
And at that point, trust me, anything can happen. So it would be nice you know for Palace to get a great cop run. I remember the the the FA cop run the other time. so It would really be nice, but ah particularly about yesterday's game, it was great.
00:09:06
Wale Bakare
The same players um leaving up to the building, giving a great performance. Monaz was fantastic. um Mateta was was was fantastic.
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:18
Wale Bakare
Davani was great. It was nice to see Adam Waughton back to you know, somewhat level where he would normally produce towards the end of last season when he joined. he said He's been very unlucky with injuries and loss of form and all that, so it was nice to have him back, particularly for me.
00:09:34
Wale Bakare
we use assist for the, the Venigo was fantastic. So it it was just a great watch. And it wasn't one of those games that was completely one sided where the other team didn't, it was a proper football game. And yeah, Palace, Palace got the victory. Yeah, you could say maybe it's a game they could have won, but come on, it was away from Ole Miss, the FA Cup, you know, and and we know Palace are able to.
00:10:00
Wale Bakare
have a terrible outing if they want to but

Expectations vs Millwall

00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:10:02
Wale Bakare
but yes it was a good one and I'm really pleased for the boy.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
years Yeah it was pretty solid performance to be honest and like you said there were a few upsets in the ah previous games before that on Monday so it was a good win for us. um We actually in the previous round against Stockport that was a lot tougher so it it just shows that like you know the big Premier League teams can struggle against lower league opposition so to get through with a comfortable 2-0 is it's great and obviously before the game we knew that if we won we would have Millwall awaiting at home in the fifth round so that was probably a bit of a extra motivation and I think Will Hughes said after the game similar to what you said Wale is like
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's sort of a belief amongst the squad that they can go far and perhaps get to the semi-final or the final at Palace. um So, yeah, we'll see how it goes. But, yeah, we've got to take it one step at a time. And, you know, the next big step is Millwall at home. ah Just so quickly while I lay some thoughts on that tie. What you would you make of that?
00:11:10
Wale Bakare
Well, of course, it will be, you know, as I said, with the FA copy, you don't know anything could happen. It will be a game as that will be tough, but Palace will be enjoying the benefit of, you know, playing at home. And hopefully that will ah mean that You know, the the crowd is behind the team. um The reason that maybe that will add to the desire to to get them to the next round. But it will be a difficult game. Definitely. Millwall, they're no pushovers. they've ah To be honest, I haven't seen them a lot.
00:11:52
Wale Bakare
I'm just trying to double check something very quickly. level I haven't seen them a lot you know in a couple of games, but I know that the avan they haven't had the best of seasons as to, you know, getting up, having a chance to get up and from from the from the league. But I think last season they went as bad, you know, the they are 14th in the league and they they've they've had some of you know great games as well, and they are also looking for for a lot of these teams in the championship and below.
00:12:25
Wale Bakare
An FA Cup run is something they know that that that happens, so they they will there will be teams looking at Coventry from last season, for example, and saying, that could be us, we could go you know to the semi-final and you know make some good money you know from the TV deal, from tickets and all of that.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:42
Wale Bakare
so that there will be wanting to do that. that there's From the fifth round upwards, ah there is that added desire and um ah energy from the teams in the lower lower sides. and but it's It's always easy to go into a game as underdogs in a anyway, so that that that takes a lot of pressure off them if they lose to Palace away.
00:13:07
Wale Bakare
wouldn't be the end of the world if they get a victory that will be massive and I'm sure they'll be saying to themselves that's something we can do but Alice of course I'm sure Glastner will be saying to the boys um don't don't look at yourself and think you know you're you're the bigger boy boys or you're better we've always said in In the Premier League, the the teams from about 12 to 20 could easily be playing in the championship. you know So you need to approach this game like you know you're playing. You can't afford to become pleasant in any way. ah You have to you know ah keep your feet on the ground and just approach it like you will any other game. And with Palace, the easier games are the more difficult ones, which which is why I was particularly pleased with the result against Coventry.
00:13:55
Wale Bakare
um You know, I'm in Doncaster yesterday. So it will be an interesting game. It will be tough. But I'm back in Palace to you know get the job done, depending on you know the form at the time. It's still a couple of weeks away the game. But if if it's this run-off from the Palace are on, then definitely they they should be able to get the result against me all.

Away Form and Strategies

00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think glasner said that he was like there's there's still a couple of games in between and he said he's focusing on on those for now, obviously. um Starting with Everton at the weekend, but yeah, in terms of an occasion, it's.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, for Palace, it's massive, having me all at home. And unfortunately, I'm on holiday that the weekend that it's on.
00:14:40
Wale Bakare
um
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm not going to be going, and I'm absolutely gutted about it. I did look at getting some flights back from where I was kind going, but I'd rather just have the holiday, to be honest.
00:14:52

Hello and welcome back to part two of the Daily Palace podcast. I'm your host, Alex Way, and I'm joined by Wale Pakari on our 100th episode of the pod. So we're just going to look at Palace's away form, Wale. It's very impressive at the moment on the road for the Eagles. We're actually the most informed Premier League away side, taking 16 points from our last 18 on the road. It's better than any other team, which is quite impressive.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then there's been four successive 2-0 wins capped with the Doncaster win last night and five clean sheets in a row um away from home. ah So it's all coming together for Palace um away from Celes Park Wale. But can you put your finger on anything that's clicked for the lads or anything they've done differently? like How has it all come together, this this impressive run of four?
00:16:24
Wale Bakare
Well, it does seem like we always knew Palace had a good performance in them, even at the start of the season, which you know accounts for the disappointment ah when results when going the way of the team. No no disrespect to Southampton, for example. um I'm not sure a lot of their fans go into games thinking,
00:16:48
Wale Bakare
Oh, we're going to win this one. It's more about hoping that that they get a result, you know, sometimes when you see ah they they the of the the performance on display in games. But with Palace, ah even at the start of the season, of course, a couple of games, Brentford, Weston, Leicester,
00:17:07
Wale Bakare
um it did look like what exactly is going on here. The boys could definitely have gotten better results in those games. And afterwards, it wasn't a see if Palace were playing any badly. Yeah, there were games that Palace lost by the odd goal, and then the draws against United, Chelsea, um Man City,
00:17:30
Wale Bakare
You know, even but against Liverpool, it could easily have been, you know, ah ah draw or maybe even nick the wind. So, Palace always had the performance in them and it always looked like it was only a matter of time before things clicked, but we've also seen teams that are always not the worst in performance, but results just never come and then the manager gets sacked and then someone else comes in and you just goes or horribly for them, and before you know it, you're talking about a relegation battle. It was that tittering towards that direction for Palace, but somehow you know the team rallied round and started getting good

Player Effort and Team Improvement

00:18:12
Wale Bakare
results. For me, it's it's been about the, but not just the away games, we' we've seen more desire, we've seen players ah put in
00:18:21
Wale Bakare
No disrespect to the you know the the level they were putting in in the start of the season, but that this you just see players putting in more of a shift in games. Players go back to the performance level that we know they had in them at the start of the season. A lot of questions about, we use Tariq Mitchell, questions about you know, whether we could get defenders on the same level as Guy, you know, questions about whether Mateta could get the goals and whether Ismaila Sa can, you know, ah put in performances that you expect from him. But that didn't happen at the start, but over time, you know,
00:19:01
Wale Bakare
players started getting back to the form that we know they can get to, started putting put you know put them in performances that we know they could get to. And ah you know it's it's all down to the will and the desire ah for for me. And we once that began to increase a bit, once they took that up a notch a bit,
00:19:20
Wale Bakare
the results started coming. it It took a while. There were a lot of draws and, you know, at Fort Victory against Tottenham, for example. But the more comfortable results started rolling in over time. So it just did look like, um I don't know whether it was something Glassner said to the boys or whether it was the boys having a look in the mirror and saying to themselves, we definitely can can do more than we've we've been doing. But once they showed more desire and once they it looked like they took things by the squawk of the neck and they said enough of this and we we want to go on a run of results and and that's exactly what they've done in the last weeks.
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's been an amazing turnaround really from where we were. I think obviously you pinpointed the Spurs game, the 1-0 went home, but I think it was perhaps the game before that I think at Nottingham Forest where we lost 1-0, where we just performed so badly and I think that was such a um such a turning point in terms of like it was the lowest of the low. We like went eight games without a win to start the season where it might've been even more than that. And it's just, yeah, like you can't get much worse than that. So the hat something had to change and luckily it did.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, everything just seemed to click like players performance levels are so much better than they were at the start of the season. Like Munoz is back to how we saw him at the end of last season. Mateta scoring the goals again. We're also doing this without Eze as well. He he wasn't well, he he played a part in the Man United win, but he wasn't on the pitch for 60 odd minutes. um So everyone else is sort of, you know, finding their level and finding their feet.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So hopefully it can only continue um for the rest of the seasons, but we'll see we'll see how things pan out.

Hello and welcome back to part three of the Daily Palace podcast. We're now going to look at a bit of transfer news, Wally, um just to cap things off. ah We've mentioned him a couple of times in the pod already, like we always do. The main man, John Philippe Mateta.
00:22:02
Wale Bakare
especially when he's drawn.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah Yeah, every every every few minutes it is when Joe's on, loves that guy. and John Philip Mateta, our top scorer this season has been linked with a move to Barcelona and Man United are also interested as are a host of other clubs. Other reports are saying that we're trying to negotiate a new contract for him, his current contract is up in 2027. It's a bit of ah a strange one considering the transfer window is just shut for rumours to be swirling around this soon while late. But do you think there's any legs to this this transfer rumour? Do you think Palace ah do need to get a new contract for Matata over the line? What do you reckon?
00:22:50
Wale Bakare
Well, first of all, I should say, you know, Alex, we beyond the pod, we've got some media experience and we know that sometimes, you know, the media needs to find something to yeah make some noise about.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah.
00:23:02
Wale Bakare
um
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's only so much you can say about beating Doncaster.
00:23:04
Wale Bakare
you and And then I know that many many years ago, ah the transfer room or part of every um publication or news website used to be something that happened towards January and after and then towards the end of the season and during, but now it's something that happens all year round and you need to find content for that part of your you know news.
00:23:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:32
Wale Bakare
So sometimes setting things but Not to say that this is not something that can happen. um Someone might might have looked at Mateta and might have said to themselves, from a Manchester United perspective, for example, when you look at what they have, Ireland, Xerxes,
00:23:57
Wale Bakare
aside from the fact that they're they're younger. And you could say, oh, you don't know what they will grow into. But local fans have said that. But Dowie Nunez for so many seasons now.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good point. and for
00:24:08
Wale Bakare
But but you could you could still look at even Nunez age and say, oh, you don't know what it will grow into.
00:24:14
Wale Bakare
Because I think what there were talks about that a team wanted Dowie Nunez for 70 million. you know So they must have been like they must be looking at all the E's. But so for Ireland and Xerxes, for example, you look at their age and But if you look at the output, nowhere near where Mateta is getting. So someone could look at Mateta and say, if he's performing that way you know around.
00:24:38
Wale Bakare
players in Palace, if he gets, you know, maybe more quality players at Barcelona, I don't necessarily say are united at the moment, but maybe if he knows that he can't get more goals, as ah you know, he's got Premier League experience, he could get more goals. Yes, that that's a risk what what they can, especially if your strikers are not giving you the goals. But for Barcelona, for example, they've got Limon Dusky at the moment who doesn't look like his agent at all, but I don't know what the plan is for those teams and what the agenda is for those teams. But speaking about Palace specifically, it would come down to what is the ah goal for the club? What's the ownership or the leadership of the club hoping to achieve? We know that

is able to get goals. We know that he is able to rally the team. is In the scheme of things, you could call Mateta an invaluable member of the Palace squad. Do you want to lose an invaluable member of your squad?

ah The answer usually is a no, but in this market these days, there's also the question of how much are we talking about? What can we get? ah you know as As a replacement, can we get a better player you know with a lower price than what we're getting from Mateta? Or are they looking to make some investment for the future?
00:26:07
Wale Bakare
Personally, I would look at Mateta and say it's one deserving of a new contract.

Hm.
00:26:12
Wale Bakare
It's one deserving of more help, of course. um If Eddie and Katia hasn't gotten the goals that Palace expected, if, for example, he's got 10 goals this season already alongside what Mateta has, you you can only begin to imagine where Palace would be you know as as a team.
00:26:34

so at the moment it seems like the most likely source of a goal for Palace and you don't want to lose that. So as I said it really is totally dependent on what you know, the ownership of the club, leadership of the club, are looking at the future of the club and what they want to do. Yes, you could say, oh yeah, if we let him go, if there's indeed clubs wanting him. Question is, how much are they willing to pay? What other players can the club bring in?
00:27:07
Wale Bakare
we've We've seen clubs, you know, sell players, get a lot of money and they struggle to get business over the line in bringing in, you know, other players. Some have had to wait for another season. Some are unable to do it. Some eventually get the man they want and they just never, you know, produce as as much as they expect. So it's a very tricky thing. But personally, as I said, he's he a man deserving of ah you know another deal.

Securing Key Players

Yeah, I think arguably he's probably the main player we need to sign. um We just, you know, as football fans, like we just know how much of a premium a good goal scorer is in the Premier League, especially. um And it's worth its weight in gold if you can sign someone like Mateta and hold him down for a few years, um especially a club size of Palace, like having, ah you know, a 15 to 20 season goal scorer is massive.

um And it doesn't like you say, it doesn't look like Eddie and Ketia is that person yet. Maybe he will turn into that because he's a bit younger. um But Mateta is our main bloke at the moment up front, and we need him. um Yeah, all right, his contract's like still got another year and a half or so, but or another couple of years. But yeah, it's something we we should be looking to get over the line. um Like you say, though, these rumors are just yeah a bit early days at the moment. but I do you think you know he is a player who will attract interest, especially if we keep scoring goals. um And it will be one to keep an eye on in the summer, I'm sure, along with a few of our other players who are out of contract, like Will Hughes, who has obviously been very good for us this season as well.
