Podcast Introduction

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.

Game Recap and Reaction

00:00:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Our last episode was a preview on Friday of Palace's game against Doncaster in the Cup. And now the match just finished and we're doing an immediate mini episode, a quick sort of 15, 18, maybe even 20 minute reaction. We'll see how much we have to say. um Palace,
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Premier League team dispatched Doncaster League 2 team 2-0 away from home with a first half goal from Daniel Munoz and Justin Deveni doubling the EU's advantage around 50 something minutes. See the preparation that's gone into this one there.

Broadcast Challenges and Fan Frustration

00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um the heavy favorites dispatching a lower league team. Is that the magic of the cup for you, Dan?
00:01:09
Dan Tanner
That's pretty much what I was expecting of it. I think I listened to you and Alex but do the podcast earlier. So just to remind myself what you guys were talking about. And yeah, I was expecting a fairly sort of fairly comfortable 2-0 result.
00:01:25
Dan Tanner
And exactly what happened after it took me about 15, 20 minutes to actually find where it's actually being showed on BBC.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
citizen
00:01:35
Dan Tanner
My God, that was so complicated and didn't need to be there. I was doing it on a the web browser and it goes, it starts off with EastEnders and then just cut immediately.
00:01:46
Dan Tanner
Just no warning, no nothing, just cuts into the game ah as it's two minutes after, that as it's starting. Like, Beeb, you could have made this so much easier to deal with.
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He takes that because...
00:01:56
Dan Tanner
ah But from that, it was a relatively sort of simple simple enough game for Palace, dominated, largely in the possession, stuck to plan A through most of it.
00:02:10
Dan Tanner
ah Fairly solid defensively fairly solid going forward Meteta was kind of quiet didn't really have much of the ball But yeah far from that we go through to the next round and we get Millwall

Looking Forward: Palace's Next Match

00:02:23
Dan Tanner
in the next round. So um yeah ah get um Get a local local Derby a bit of a London Derby as well. I think they're actually one of our closest Londoners, I think so, um, that's gonna be fun Millwall always fun if you don't know about Millwall look them up um actually no no
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:42
Dan Tanner
but idea actually
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, yeah. um If we have a few ah few listeners from across the pond and aren't familiar with Millwall's game, ah it might put you off for the entire sport of football altogether if you find it out. So maybe, maybe leave it be until Palace take them on the cup.
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um As you say, it was was a bit of a funny fixture.
00:03:06
Dan Tanner
Actually, no, no. Bad idea actually.
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was scheduled on Monday, I assume for TV reasons, but then... Really, the broadcast have not made the most of it.

Player Performances: Chilwell, Wharton, and Deveni

00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not on any kind of main terrestrial TV. And it's pretty difficult to find an eye player as well. I enjoyed the Palace fans making their feelings understood in the crowd with a sign. Have you ever seen one of those? It's like an anti-fascist sign. I think it's like a Run DMC type font. And it's like a and an abbreviation of a rude word.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then it'll have like AFD or some kind of three letter kind of far right thing in there. And this one had the same, same motif, same rude words, and then MLF underneath Monday Night Football. So of course i fair enough, acquitting it with fascism might be a little far, but um it is certainly annoying to be asked to go out for Doncaster on a Monday night for a game that is is is kind of broadcast in the most slapdash relaxed way not to do any disservice to the broadcasting team on the hand on the day who were good as ever but yeah it wasn't easy it was not easy to access um it was
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
One thing about the game is that for us it was a chance to assess a couple of players that we've not seen much of this season. So the new boy Ben Chilwell joined on loan hasn't played ah a competitive game since but it Was it September coming off the bench? Again, so Barrow, I think, in the in the Cup for Chelsea. um And hasn't played 90 minutes in and Donkey's years. He came on at half-time. Adam Wharton also had another appearance. What did you think of Lowe's 2, Dan? did they ah Did they impress you? Did they look up to speed?
00:05:16
Dan Tanner
Well, Chilwell did what I expected him to do. He was very sort of very deadly with the long passes. There were one or two where he switched the play absolutely perfectly to Munoz and it just hit him in stride. He got, I think he even got up and it got into sort of like these kind of like the attacking areas. um We've gotten some decent ah ah tackles along that sort of left wing, trying to keep their right side at bay. So I think he was fairly solid for literally only being there, I think, what was it, Thursday, Friday, I think he signed. So um he seems to be settling in well enough. And Wharton, oh, I think you did really well, actually. It's kind of, that it showed what we were kind of what we've been kind of missing for the last few months of one of these sort of ah
00:06:07
Dan Tanner
but almost like box-to-box midfielders. Hibben Hughes had this really good sort of tandem of when one went forward, the other one would drop back and so on. And he had a really good link-up play with Diveni as well, who I've got to admit, he was probably one of the brightest sparks, especially in the first half. Very sort of attack-minded, very willing to go at them. Doncaster really didn't have too many options to sort of slow him down.
00:06:36
Dan Tanner
between so as you But asking for Wharton and Chilwell, ah they did basically what I expected them to do. Nothing overly flashy, but for both of them it's just getting match fit at the moment and then playing 45 to 50 something minutes at a time, I think, will do the world a good.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I completely agree. I think Chillwell felt like he was easing himself into the game. So there was nothing particularly eye-catching from him, but he was solid. He got up and down. I think almost like he was holding something back because by the time he came on, Palace were already in control. Nothing major was required of him other than to kind of hold his width.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and be sensible and he he did that. And I think we'll see more expansive performances for him when he comes on in in different circumstances from here. But it was ah it was a solid first outing for him. And I was really pleased with Wharton. I thought it wasn't necessarily any individual thing he did, but and obviously there's a caveat that without taking too much away from them, this is Don Carson, not a Premier League team. but
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
He played with a ah swagger, I think, and a confidence that we haven't seen from him since probably before the summer.
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a kind of self-assuredness that I'm sure was hampered by feeling his groin the whole time. That's an immature, immature giggle there.
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I could find a better way of wording, feeling his groin all night long.
00:08:22
Dan Tanner
Oh you can do better than that, come on!
00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah ah ah before that surgery.
00:08:27
Dan Tanner
Don't go down that road! yeah
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah But, you know, he looked like he was had that kind of the peace of mind, which perhaps speculative, but perhaps comes with feeling free in his in his movement, in his body in a way that he didn't before. um And that's really encouraging for Palace. Devaney, I think was a good one to highlight there, Dan, he's my player of the match. Was he your player of the match as well?
00:08:57
Dan Tanner
I definitely, probably definitely would be the player of the match. um But the beep gave it to Hughes, who what solid he was He was solid.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who was good?
00:09:07
Dan Tanner
He had a lot of great really good, like, per pinpoint passes from deep, which I think it was absolutely brilliant.
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah his ball for Devaney's goal was very nice as well.
00:09:17
Dan Tanner
He's been doing that basically ever since the Man City game. And it's just like, when why couldn't he have been doing that in the beginning of the season? um I don't know where this guy's suddenly come from, but he's now sort of becoming one of these sort of like deep-line playmakers and sort of being able to sort of pass off these pinpoint accurate passes. But yeah, as I said, go back to Davenny as we should be because that's what you asked me about. um Yeah, he was one of the brightest sparks definitely in the first half couldn't really, Doncaster couldn't really match him. He had some really good link up plays with Mateta as well, and he would pass the ball out to Camarda and to Munoz, and he would sort of pass it off and then move into a position where he would get sort of a little bit of space. um But yeah, definitely probably my player of the game, ah more that over Hughes, but I'm not the BBC commentating to him.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I think i think Hughes was there was a fair shout and the fact that we're not giving it to him and and the BBCR is maybe reflective of simply as As opposed to the BBC commentary team, we watched a lot of Palace and have got used to these performances from Will Hughes. and No longer surprised to see him really get his foot on the ball and and dominate games like that. But that shouldn't take away from what great performance it was by him. But yeah, I think I was really impressed with Da Vinny. It was just the kind of intelligence of the movement
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was very good at ah touching the ball, kind of consistently into space, offloading in the right moments, getting into good positions. He should have scored before the one that he actually did get when to cut across to him.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he by God, he made up for that with that, that chip was absolutely brilliant. I think it's a chip, an opportunity that is afforded him by some slightly yeah um unsure of himself goalkeeping from Sharmen Lowe, I think he was called in the net for Doncaster, which, yeah, I liked Sharmen Lowe.
00:11:28
Dan Tanner
think gentleman oh yeah think it's healthy lonely and I think another team.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sharman Low sounds yeah it sounds like a boy from Surrey who's got too deep into his gap year, 20 years later find himself Sharman Low.

Doncaster's Performance

00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think yeah it was it was really, really nicely taken depending on well deserved because he was
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
While Doncaster's Resistance was its its greatest, he was the player probably with the most ideas and most drive and impetus in the Palace team. So I think he deserved that. And it was a performance he deserves a lot of credit for. ah On that, let's take ah a pause to give some credit to our sponsors who make this possible for us. And then we will wrap up with some ah more concluding thoughts about the game.
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, quickly Dan, what were your thoughts on Doncaster this game? I think they gave a decent, a decent showing.
00:12:53
Dan Tanner
thank you
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't it wasn't plain sailing
00:12:59
Dan Tanner
It wasn't totally plain, Sally. And they gave us a couple of scares. Definitely in the last 10 minutes or so, they started to press really high and made sure to make life really uncomfortable for Palace.
00:13:11
Dan Tanner
I think Molyneux was probably one of their bright sparks that ah Alex pointed out on Friday. And after sort of listening to that that analysis again, like watching it back and going,
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:13:21
Dan Tanner
Yeah he's probably one of their better players and I think he had at least two long shots. I think one of them was only like maybe sort a couple of inches away and he definitely made his presence known. um Mitchell definitely had to keep an eye on him for as long as possible and then a chill well towards the in the second half but but yeah but don't cast on the whole they weren't total pushovers because as the Palace had very much dominated the possession of the ball. But we really didn't do that much with it. It was sort of we'd go forward and then Doncaster would probably either just try and get a little tackle on or we do one too many passes or just no real impetus at times. So it kind of led them back into the game. Just they lacked any kind of right real finishing. They had one or two moments where there was a ah ah heartbeat
00:14:21
Dan Tanner
just stopped as sort of there. We have an open goal. Matt Turner having a couple of weird ah moments where he's slightly out of position or slightly lackadaisical pass and it's like, oh, come on, man. Wake up. Come on. Don't do anything silly now. and sara yep there that Don Carson gave a really good account of themselves and they probably could have actually got a goal out of it in at least one or that one of those situations. but ah Luckily for us, it didn't go in. So we go on to the next round.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Molyneux, the ah luke there, the most intimidating, the most formidable Molyneux in English football right now, giving Wolves position in the table. The biggest compliment I can say of him, he was really dangerous on the day and he wasn't far off for a couple of those most shots. When the second big one came in in the first, so in the second half, and he kind of whips it just over the crossbar and towards the opposite corner.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought to myself, non-ironically, they know what he's going to do, cutting him in his Leibniz-Kernier, but they can't stop it. It's like Ian Robin. Which, if I'm thinking non-ironically, you're like, Ian Robin, it's really a decent performance, or or poor reflection on Palatas defending him.
00:15:37
Dan Tanner
take them and
00:15:43
Dan Tanner
Oh.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he he did look really good. And was he, oh, were they the centre-back who was kind of up against me said
00:15:51
Dan Tanner
Yeah, number number five, Oliver. Yeah, he he was put on a decent defensive showing.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:57
Dan Tanner
Definitely one stopping Mateta at point-blank, Ranger.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was brilliant.
00:16:00
Dan Tanner
You you even saw Mateta's face, he literally kicked the ball and it just came right back at him.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, all game long, here he made life really difficult for Mateta, who was forced to play quite wide at times to to make things happen and make the ball stick. um And I didn't get much of a chance to see what he was like on the ball in the game because of the way Don Curster were playing. But if he can defend like that, you think he's he's got potential definitely to go on and and play at a higher level as long as he's tidy enough in possession. I was really impressed with him.

Palace's FA Cup Prospects

00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think to wrap things up, Dan, I'm going to ask the question.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, all out of the FA Cup at this stage in proceedings. Is the door open for Palace? could lay and i are they Are they a serious dark horse now?
00:16:55
Dan Tanner
I don't know I think I think you slightly because I was having this conversation with a mate of mine who's an Arsenal fan who's already out so um he's got going it's basically the favorites are one of the Man United one of the Manchester clubs and Newcastle they're definitely not the favorites and I think you've probably even got
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
do you think I'm not saying you can make the FA Cup favourites, but are you starting to dream?
00:17:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And when you say one of the Manchester clubs, you literally mean that here's Manchester City.
00:17:27
Dan Tanner
cities definitely but um it totallys let's say that much but either way um but I think your palace and even probably Brighton might be probably considered slight outsiders here if we get a lucky draw after Millwall we have to get past that first but we get a nice favorable draw I think we could possibly get to probably a semi-final out of this and
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not either of the Manchester clubs.
00:17:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:17:53
Dan Tanner
yeah and At the very least get a semi-final at Wembley, which we haven't done for well better part of a decade now so
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. There are plenty of good teams still in it, as you say, with the likes of of City, um Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brighton, I think Brentford are still there, aren't they?
00:18:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
but For you, I guess Bretton and Brentford would. I think not as many teams are in as good a run of form as Palace and have as little else to play for in a way. Because I feel like, again, I was saying this with Alex last Friday, Palace could really push on and try and finish as high as possible in the league. And I'm not saying they shouldn't try and finish as high as they can.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the European places are probably quite a big arse, given the terrible starts this season and and the quality of the teams there. That said, Pallater's form is is one of the better in the league. There's certainly one of the tougher teams to beat at this point in the season. I think that's that's fair to say. And if they keep their defence fit, they'll continue to beat. So why not really put everything into it and have a good run at this cup? I think. Why not?
00:19:17
Dan Tanner
I couldn couldn't agree with you more. de why Why not go for it? We've got nothing else at the moment unless we go on a mad run. Still a little. There's still some time left. It's still possible to go on a mad run and push for so top But I think that may be a little bit out of reach. If we can keep injury free or more or less, I think the possibility.

Podcast Support and Future Plans

00:19:39
Dan Tanner
But as it's as we're talking f FA Cup, why not go for a run? Absolutely, why not?
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. I agree, Dan. Glad you're on the same wavelength. I'm now i'm not pushing for the FA Cup as Palace's main priority and ah going to claim that I've always considered it the most important phrase in world football.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Palace, why not go for an FA Cup run? You, the listener, why not leave us a five-star review? If you've got this far, we always appreciate it. It helps us be discovered. We will be back ah tomorrow, the next day, the day after, and the day after that. And we hope you can join us for as much of that journey as possible. Thank you, Dan, for joining me today.
00:20:32
Dan Tanner
No worries mate, it's been a bit of a late one but you can still do this.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
because hopefully it'll be easier easier to locate than Palace Doncaster was on the beeb. And yeah, we hope to catch you again tomorrow. Bye bye for now.
