Episode 29 of CLL joins an already in-progress discussion of Season 3 of Star Trek Picard.  Jonathan, Chris, and Mikey of the Deucecast Movie Show talk Episodes 6-10 of Picard’s final season.  It should go without saying, but there are full spoilers for the plot of the season throughout the discussion.  Jonathan kicks off the show with an announcement about an upcoming guest interview on the podcast.  Since the initial recording was almost 3 hours, the three hosts get a little delirious towards the end, but there’s some fun stuff that gets left in.  Thanks again for continuing to listen to the show.  We’d love for you to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.  Check the links below the chapter stops for everywhere to find the show and subscribe to The Deucecast Movie Show!

Introduction and Episode Overview

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey there, it's Jonathan, and thanks for listening to episode 29 of the podcast. This episode is the continuation of our discussion about season 3 of Star Trek Picard, which covers episodes 6 through 10. Our next episode will be released in mid-August, and I'm excited to announce that it's currently scheduled to be an interview episode with none other than the actor who portrayed Captain Liam Shaw in Picard season 3, Todd Stashwick.
00:00:30
Speaker
This is an announcement that I still can't believe that I'm making, guys. Todd is a lifelong geek and a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, Dungeons and Dragons, and comics. Chris and I are really looking forward to nerding out with Todd, and we know that you're going to enjoy that conversation too.

Todd Stashwick Interview Update

00:00:48
Speaker
You may already be aware that Thursday, July 13th, the Screen Actors Guild Union went on strike, and they're standing in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. So basically,
00:01:01
Speaker
If the strike is not resolved by August 2nd of this year, our interview with Todd will be delayed and Chris and I will release episode 30 as a standard episode of the podcast and we will keep you up to date on everything with Todd and when we can interview him again.
00:01:20
Speaker
I'm putting this out there now in hopes that the strike does get resolved by August 2nd, because I want to be honest with our listeners and let you know that we are extremely excited about this opportunity. It just may be delayed a little bit, so stick with us and enjoy episode 29 of Captain's Logs and Lightsabers. Captain's Logs. On the prologue, I'm Captain in the Millennium Falcon.
00:01:48
Speaker
This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship Enterprise. I already have one message from Starfleet coming in on secured channel. You're listening to Captain's Logs and Lightsabers, part of the Geek News Now podcast network.

Mission to Daystrom Station

00:02:56
Speaker
OK, so we're going to go on to episode six, which was called The Bounty. So Worf and Raffi come aboard the Titan and they discuss with the crew the current situation with the changelings. And what they say is they need to infiltrate Daystrom Station. So what they said about Daystrom Station
00:03:14
Speaker
is that's where basically that portal technology came from. So they realized there's probably clues at Daystrom station. They need to go back and kind of piece together what the changing was doing. But they said it's guarded by a really sophisticated AI, but they had a device that they could try to bypass to get past the security and try to figure out what's happening. Of course, they just happen to have it.
00:03:37
Speaker
Let's see. The Titan is forced to flee after Starfleet ships arrive. So Picard says that they need some help. So he decides for them to go to the Fleet Museum and actually because that's where Geordi is at. He is now a Commodore and he's in charge of the Starfleet Museum and he's also working on a secret project there. So what they do is they drop
00:04:02
Speaker
Who was it? Was it Riker, Raffy, and Wharf? I believe it was the three of them at Daystream Station, while the rest of them go to the Starfleet Museum. So at this point, the await team members, they're confronted by several odd little things, tunes and
00:04:22
Speaker
At one point actually by professor Moriarty. Yes, and they managed to get right that was perfect so they managed to get away from professor Moriarty by believe because Riker was able to figure out that this the note city was hearing was pop goes the weasel Which is a nice tie-in to when he first met data in the pilot of next generation so

Discovery of Android with Data's Memories

00:04:45
Speaker
They all pass into basically the heart of the station and they find a song type Android that actually contains memories of Data, B4, LOL, Lore, and Alton Song. Alton Song was actually the creator, if you guys don't know or if the audience doesn't know, he was in late season one of Picard and he actually was the creator of the Gollum Body that Picard ended up getting.
00:05:09
Speaker
So we also find out that the project's database that they're looking for is there at Daystrom. Also what the Titan ended up doing is, so Jack and Sydney wanted to try to find a way to help the away team over at Daystrom. So they actually take the cloaking device from the old bird of prey from Star Trek IV and put it on board the Titan.
00:05:37
Speaker
That was really nice touch. That was a nice touch. We also get to see in this episode, Jordy's actually finally in the storyline and he brings his other daughter, Alondro Board, who by the way, that is actually is LaVar Burton's biological daughter. Yes. Oh, I didn't know that. That's cool. Yes, Micah Burton.
00:05:55
Speaker
So they go back to daystrom station where they recover the array away team but riker ends up staying behind to try to buy time for their safety and he ends up getting captured and taken to the strike and he finds out that his wife's there as well. Let's see here and what they're also trying to do with this this data body is they're trying to bring data back out of it and but he's being blocked basically by lore on the two

Starfleet Museum Highlights and Nostalgia

00:06:23
Speaker
Personalities are clashing and trying to basically fight for dominance over that body And so that's pretty much where that episode ended What one thing I didn't bring up yet And it was my absolute favorite part of this episode is when seven and nine and Jack are sitting on the bridge of the Titan And they're going one ship at a time For yeah, it was beautiful so obviously
00:06:50
Speaker
The one thing I really loved was when they showed the USS New Jersey and it was an original Constitution class ship from the original series. That to me was like, yes, they finally fixed it. You know, I'm a big cannon person, very big cannon person. If you guys remember one of the earliest episodes of Picard, they showed a hologram of what was supposed to be the original Enterprise and it was the Strange New World's Discovery version.
00:07:13
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that rubbed me the wrong way, like you wouldn't believe. So the fact that Terry metallus brought an actual original series Constitution class ship in was like, yes, somebody got it. I figured it out. That was cool. It was nice seeing again from Star Trek for the bounty. We learned that they actually recovered it from the Pacific Ocean after that movie. That was what other ships was that the Enterprise A. We find out that that ship's still sitting there. So that was great.
00:07:42
Speaker
I gotta admit, I actually choked up and teared up when I saw Voyager. And watching Seven and I sitting in that chair with those glazed eyes, just looking lovingly at the ship and explaining to Jack about what it meant for her that that was her family, that was her home.
00:08:01
Speaker
You know, and it helps the person that she is now. I mean, for me, I watch that show as a kid. I've watched it from the night it premiered to the night it ended. You know, I traveled with that crew for seven years. So her saying that and then the Voyager theme is partly playing at the time. It hits so hard.
00:08:19
Speaker
I'm not ashamed to admit that. That's what I loved about this episode. It hit the nostalgia factors in all the right areas, while at the same time opening up new stories and saying, oh my goodness, data is actually back. What a great way to bring data back.
00:08:35
Speaker
And, you know, basically with this goal and body, he finally achieves and gets what he wanted since all the way back to the beginning of the next generation was to be human. You know? Yeah. So what do you guys think? Yeah, this was a really good episode. It felt like a little bit of.
00:08:56
Speaker
a MacGuffin episode just in the sense that they're going to Daystrom Station, and that whole thing felt kind of like a MacGuffin, just the whole concept.
00:09:08
Speaker
just laughing a lot internally, thinking to myself, did Daniel Davis ever imagine that he would be playing Professor Moriarty again in a Star Trek thing? Yeah, exactly. That is just like so such a random thing to do. Yeah. And I'm just I'm look, I'm glad the guy's still alive, you know, and that he could do it again. And so it was it was really fun. But yeah, there was all kinds of
00:09:35
Speaker
Easter eggs on that station, um, that, uh, not being as, uh, deep into the Star Trek lore as, as your Chris, I didn't catch all of them, but I knew we were seeing a lot of Easter eggs on that station. Oh, absolutely.

Starfleet Museum's Historical Context

00:09:52
Speaker
Yeah. We didn't even get into that yet. There was a lot of stuff on that station.
00:09:56
Speaker
And the Defiant was there too, right? Yes, the Defiant was there, and also the Enterprise, NX-01 was there in a refit that they never showed because the series was canceled. Right. So now that's official canon, the NX refit. Nice. That was really cool. There was also a Katinga-class Klingon vessel there, which was believed to be Kronos-1 from Star Trek series. Oh, no. Oh, wow. That's crazy. Yeah, there was no one on there.
00:10:23
Speaker
I love the idea of a Starfleet Museum. I want to visit it. And the ironic thing is too, that Starfleet Museum was actually supposed to be the original space dock from Star Trek 3. They got moved to Earth and yes, they moved that to that planet to become Starfleet Museum and then they built the new space dock. That's really cool. I love it. I love all the little connections and they
00:10:49
Speaker
That's when you know this show this season comes from a place of deep respect and admiration for the whole TNG era. Oh, absolutely. And all of Star Trek, really. Yeah, and that's why they better dang well do that Star Trek Legacy show. I mean, they have to reward Terry Metallus
00:11:13
Speaker
for this season of Picard by giving him his own series. I mean, they just have to. One that he gets to create from season one forward, however many seasons it goes. Because I mean, if you think about it, Discovery's ending whenever it comes out next year.
00:11:30
Speaker
That's the last finals. They need something. They need something to keep going. And it's just such an obvious thing. And I'm sure they're doing it. They're just waiting for the right moment to announce it and make it a big deal announcement type. Exactly.

Speculation on Star Trek Legacy

00:11:43
Speaker
If they announce it, it probably will be either at San Diego Comic Con or they're going to wait till Star Trek Day on September 8th. Yeah. I mean, Comic Con, it seems like because of the strike, no major studio is going this year. OK.
00:11:58
Speaker
It'll probably, you're right, it'll probably be on Star Trek day or something along those lines then. Or maybe New York Comic Con, I mean by that time the strike would probably be over because that's in the fall, so maybe they could do it there also. That's a good point. Yeah, possible. I would hope, gosh, if the writer's strike is not over by the fall, we're in trouble. I mean, we won't be seeing stuff for like two years. Exactly, exactly.
00:12:23
Speaker
Good thing we have libraries of content to rely on if that is the case.

Wharf's Nostalgic Encounter with Tribbles

00:12:29
Speaker
Can we talk about the Tribble in the room? Literally? Yes. I thought that was a great little callbacks to the trouble with Tribbles and then trials and tribulations, just the way that Wharf reacted and just how we know Klingons react to Tribbles. I thought that was a great, just
00:12:48
Speaker
Blink and you'll miss it moment, but just worth just getting so uneasy when he passed by that little chamber that had this treble in it was great. Oh, absolutely. And they actually kept Captain Kirk's body. Yeah, for generations. So wouldn't that be odd if he 93 year old Shatner popped up in a Star Trek legacy episode? I mean, he's been vying for it ever since the
00:13:14
Speaker
the JJ Abrams movies he's been saying he wants to be in Star Trek again. Yeah, exactly. And they have the technology now that if they needed to de age him to some degree to make him look like from generations. Oh, yeah, they can absolutely do it. Yeah, if he's on board, why not? Did you guys also see they had a Genesis torpedo?
00:13:34
Speaker
No, I didn't catch that. Yeah, I did not. It's listed as a Genesis Torpedo 2 or something like that. Oh, interesting. Yeah, there were a couple other things there, too, like some cell-stealing, ceiling stem bolts. There were a few. Everything was from some sort of past Star Trek. If you go on on
