Hey, welcome

Podcast Theme: Star Trek and Star Wars

00:01:16
Speaker
to episode 36 of Captain's Logs and Lightsabers. We are the podcast with Geek News Now that discusses both Star Trek and Star Wars in the same show. My name is Jonathan. I'm one of the hosts. Let me introduce my co-pilot, my number one, if you will, Chris. Hey, how are you doing today, Jonathan?
00:01:37
Speaker
I'm doing wonderful, man. How are you? I'm doing quite well. I've been looking forward to recording this episode. We got a lot of good stuff to talk about today.

Chris' Steel City Con Experience

00:01:45
Speaker
Oh, we really do. This is going to be a packed episode and we're going to move fast or than we usually do through it. So definitely. All right. I am ready to go when you are.
00:01:55
Speaker
All right, why don't you kick us off with how did you get this week, Chris? Well, I didn't do really any geeking this week, except to maybe buy a few things from half price books. But last week I went to the April edition of Steel City Con, which was obviously a lot of fun. I bought way more things there than I possibly should have. I probably spent about 400 bucks on a machine to say that.
00:02:17
Speaker
but got a few things that I haven't had before. Like I got the runabout or no code from 1994 from D space nine from playmates. Nice. I was wanting that. It still works, which is really cool. I also got a shuttlecraft Goddard, which was in the very first line of playmates toys in 1992. That right now doesn't work, but I have to, I'm going to try to clean up the batteries where it corroded and see if I can get it going.
00:02:41
Speaker
But that was really cool. Got action figures, books, whole bunch of just a bunch of different stuff. And of course, like I had said in previous shows, I finally got to meet Ali Sheedy from Short Circuit and from a whole bunch of other wonderful 80s movies, which was really cool. Didn't really get to say much to her. It's more like in five seconds. You just sit down, get a picture and you go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But still, it was a lot of fun. It was a blast.
00:03:05
Speaker
So what did you say? Did you get a chance to say anything to her at all? Not really. All I said to her was, hi, how are you doing? That's about it. And nice to meet you. Have a good, you know, enjoy the show or something. Yeah.
00:03:17
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's very like very much wham bam. Thank you, ma'am. Exactly. I mean, I could have I could have paid extra money to go to her table. But I'm one of those really shy introverts and I have a really hard time talking to people about like celebrities, stuff like that. Yeah. So I just kind of got the picture and that was kind of enough for me.
00:03:37
Speaker
Yeah, and especially somebody who you've had a crush on for your most of your life. Exactly. Exactly. So it all worked out. It was it was perfectly fine for me. I just got to get a frame for it and hang it up somewhere and and that'll be good to go. But that's really how I've geeked in the last literally two weeks at this point. So how about you? What have you been doing to geek? Well,

Jonathan's New Kittens: Ahsoka and Padme

00:03:59
Speaker
I guess you could call this geeking. So
00:04:03
Speaker
My wife and I have had dogs pretty much a year after we bought our house, we got our first dog. A couple years after we got her, we got a puppy and we raised him and he's been with us almost 11 years? No, definitely 11 years.
00:04:22
Speaker
But we decided that we were ready for some more animals and rather than getting another dog, because I think with having the one we've had for so long, I don't, you know, Kylie doesn't think she can go through losing another dog.
00:04:41
Speaker
you know, after after we lose this one and we decided to adopt a couple kittens. So so we got two five month old kittens. They're a bonded pair, which is, you know, if you've ever had bonded kittens, you know, they are very rambunctious and they keep each other occupied, but they also like to get into trouble together.
00:05:05
Speaker
Oh, really? I believe it. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. So we, we had, long story short, we had went to PetSmart and I wanted to get some treats for our dog and Kylie wandered into the cat room and there was this kitten there. She was named Apple and she was just really, really cute, really adorable, really good markings and
00:05:33
Speaker
She like Kylie was really. Getting they were getting comfortable so I put in an application for for her and and also for her bonded litter mates who was named mango. Unfortunately apple and mango had an application that came in before ours and was approved and it was a finalized adoption.
00:05:54
Speaker
So we worked with the shelter and found two more kittens who were bonded pair. They were named Strauss and Verdi. But we decided that, you know, and no shade on on the classic composers at all. But we decided we wanted to give them some some geeky names. So we called them Ahsoka and Padme. Nice. Perfect. Perfect.
00:06:20
Speaker
Yep. Yep. And we were always going to name the one Ahsoka if we got one, but then I decided, you know, when we decided we were getting two, we figured who other than Padme because they were friends during the Clone Wars, right? Absolutely. Yes. So yeah, we adopted two kittens. So we now have eight more paws in our family.
00:06:41
Speaker
That's wonderful. Congratulations to you guys for your growing family. That's awesome. And cats will definitely keep you busy because they're always into something. This is true. I found that out really quick. Are they sleeping with you guys yet? Yes. And you know, they, they will wander up to our room and they will hop on the bed, but they won't stay there all night necessarily.
00:07:10
Speaker
Okay. Well, yeah, most of the time, a lot of times they'll all usually get up to go to the bathroom or grab a little bite to eat or something, but then they'll come back and then they're right next to you by the time you wake up. Yep. Pretty much. Yeah. And we, you know, as you know, we have nine cats and at least five of them are in bed with us at night. I can't imagine, but you know what? Honestly, your five cats probably take up less room than two kittens and a dog right now.
00:07:35
Speaker
Probably, probably. And they, like I said, they move around, they have their little rituals. Our oldest Parker just kind of, he comes into bed, lays the brandy for a little bit, then jumps down and then he comes back periodically throughout the night. It's like this ritual he's developed over the last decade. Yours will do that too, trust me. Oh, I'm sure. You know, but there's like, sometimes there's nothing better than having an animal just snuggling it up right against you. And then they're purring and... Oh yeah. You know, they're wonderful. So congrats to you guys. That's great. Thank you.
00:08:05
Speaker
All right, so do you want to move the ship out of the asteroid field so that we can send a clear transmission?

Star Trek-themed Coffees by Pop Culture Coffee

00:08:12
Speaker
Captain, incoming message.
00:08:17
Speaker
Talk about some news. Absolutely. So just a few little odds and ends here. I'm going to save the biggest piece of news that I found for last, but how many of you out there really love your cup of coffee in the morning and you have to have it? I'm definitely one of those people. And it looks like Star Trek is going to be moving into the coffee business. Essentially it's, it was reported on trekmovie.com back on April 7th.
00:08:44
Speaker
So there's a company out there called Pop Culture Coffee, and they've announced that they're going to be creating a limited edition Star Trek branded coffee. So there are several different flavors that are going to be out there. There's Captain's Choice, which has Captain Kirk on it from the original series. And it's basically, it's a medium roast that's going to be made. And then they have one with Spock on it as well. That's called Vulcan Vanilla.
00:09:10
Speaker
This sounds like that'll be a pretty good one. I don't see any hazelnut, but hey, whatever. That one's my favorite. And then there are also going to be some other upcoming releases that'll be available for pre-order later in April and going into May. So there are three others. There's Klingon Ractogino, which is a brown sugar roast, who's just going to have Warfon on the front of it.
00:09:32
Speaker
Yes, please. That one sounds really good. And then you're going to have Federation French Roast, which will have Captain Picard on it. So it's just kind of odd you would think because he's a tea drinker, he could make a tea or something for him. Well, but he's French, I guess so. And then of course the Borg have to get highlighted at some point here. So they're going to have a Borg blend, which is a light roast highlighting the Borg Queen.
00:09:57
Speaker
It's kind of ironic that the Borg are going to be representing a light roast. It's how rough and hard they are, but hey, whatever. And then apparently, oh, here's one. So there's one. You can't have Star Trek coffee without Captain Janeway, right?
00:10:13
Speaker
Of course coffee in that nebula. It's iconic. So they're going to be making one for her. It's called Janeway's Java Jolt. So I guess she's getting the Borg one that I thought would fit better, you know, but there's going to be one about five or six different. Star Trek coffees that are going to be released here. And again, that the people that are releasing this, it's called pop culture coffee.
00:10:39
Speaker
So it looks like here that both these are going to be priced at $17.99 for a 12 ounce bag and they will be ready to arrive starting May 12th and they can be pre-ordered at popculturecoffee.com.
00:10:54
Speaker
Yeah, $17 a bag for 12 ounces. That's about what a lot of the licensed coffees go for. Because there's Bones Coffee, which has a lot of exclusive licenses. They often get a lot of Disney stuff. They get Marvel stuff.
00:11:14
Speaker
yeah it's about twelve ounces for seventeen bucks from them and there's a couple other brands out there that are a little less but yeah that's about that's about average. Oh absolutely definitely yeah first when i saw that i was kind of saying to myself while that's a lot for coffee but i'm used to buy walmart coffee for four bucks.
00:11:34
Speaker
I'm kind of like, okay, $4 versus 1799. Okay. But I would just, at this point, quite honestly, I would just get them just as collectors items, even if I don't use them, you know, in my office, which is my practice. It's all, I have my own coffee pot and having them displayed it around my coffee would, it would just fit the decor. There you go. You know, so that's always worth a shot, but I mean, it would be, it'll be great to at least try them. So maybe that's something that we can do. Maybe we can each order a bag and review it on the show down the line.
00:12:04
Speaker
All right, let's you know what? I wonder if we can reach out to pop culture coffee and see if we can get a donation or, you know, like, you know, something, get it, get a bag or two in exchange for reviewing it on the show.
00:12:20
Speaker
I think we can do that. We can try at least. Yeah, absolutely. That's actually a really good idea. So yeah, so I can reach out to them and we'll see what we can do. It's worth a shot, right? Absolutely. All right.
00:12:37
Speaker
Okay.

Star Trek Lower Decks Season Four Release

00:12:38
Speaker
Yeah, go for it. The next piece of news is Star Trek Lower Decks season four has arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. It was supposed to be out April 16th and it comes complete with exclusive special features. It has different audio commentaries with the cast and with Mike McMahon on half of the 10 episode season.
00:12:59
Speaker
It was able to be pre-ordered on Amazon on Blu-ray for $25.36 and $19.98 on DVD. And apparently it was released digitally in February on Amazon and any other digital platforms. But for anybody who's big fans of Star Trek Lower Decks, season four is officially out there to buy. Hopefully you can find it in the store somewhere if you don't like to order it on over online. Like I don't like doing that. I'd rather go in the store. You know, but hey,
00:13:30
Speaker
You know, a lot of times Walmart and even Target might will still sell some of those things. Heck, I just got season one of Lower Decks for $7.50 at Walmart just recently. Oh, you can't beat that. Geez. Exactly. Exactly. There's also apparently there are
00:13:44
Speaker
All the seven season sets of Next Generation Deep Space Nine and Voyager on Amazon.com are now half off. So I don't know if people are still out there wanting to buy regular DVD. I'm sure there are some people still out there. But if you head over to Amazon.com, Star Trek The Next Generation seven season set is down to $69.60.
00:14:08
Speaker
Deep Space Nine is down to $59.99 and Voyager is down to $62.99. So if you want to pick them up on a little bit of a bargain, hey, why not go there and check those out?
00:14:19
Speaker
I mean, for seven seasons of each of those shows with the exception of enterprise. Yeah. I mean, that's not a bad deal at all. Not, not, not one bit, you know, so yeah. So people were, I know that there are people out there that are still into physical media. So if you want to go out there and get them, do it. And actually it'll save space to them instead of buying them all individually. If you go, you know, whether online or like half price books or something, it'll save you a little space in your house.
00:14:46
Speaker
Yeah. And, you know, I think physical media is going to be, it's already making a little bit of a comeback, but I think it's going to get bigger because of all of this stuff that's going on with streaming. You know, you're not going to have these services anymore potentially. So you might lose access to a lot of shows and movies and, or, you know, it's going to have to be, you're going to have to chase it from Netflix to Amazon to prime video to wherever, you know? Absolutely. You're absolutely right.
00:15:13
Speaker
And a lot of people just like to hold the stuff in their hands and see it displayed on their shelves. I don't think that'll ever go away until the generation right now or the generation alpha starts to grow up and that's all they know is streaming and digital. So it should be around for many more years to come.

New Star Trek Ornaments by Hallmark

00:15:30
Speaker
Let's hope you exactly so and then that leads me into the biggest story that i've really been looking forward to talking about is who doesn't get excited for hallmarks star trek christmas ornaments or star wars christmas ornaments it's just they've been a big staple of our fandom for a long time for the star trek ornaments it's been since nineteen ninety one.
00:15:51
Speaker
This year, they've got an amazing lineup of ornaments. Now, last year, once again, they did not have a ship ornament for whatever reason. But they're finally going back to having a ship this year. And we're finally getting one people have been asking for for years. We're finally getting the Enterprise B from Star Trek Generations.
00:16:09
Speaker
Oh, OK. Yes. And this is going this is wonderful because it's going to finally basically complete the collection. So every other version of the ships have been released except the Enterprise B. Heck, we even got an Enterprise C ornament years a few years ago. So this one does not talk, but it does light up like all the other Enterprise ornaments. And it's tying in with the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Trek Generations, if you can believe that.
00:16:36
Speaker
But I mean, yeah, 30 years. It's kind of crazy. But it's finally going to be coming out. The Enterprise B ornament does light up, like I said, and it will be available in October of this year for thirty four ninety nine. So I think that one's going to fly off the shelves. Just I hope so. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. People have been wanting this one. So it would have completed the enterprise collection. But now you've got the enterprise F and the enterprise G that need to be added. So I'm hoping they'll start doing that in the next couple of years.
00:17:04
Speaker
We can only hope, right? Exactly. Do you collect any of the ornaments, the Star Trek ornaments?
00:17:09
Speaker
I don't collect every single one. I do have quite, I do have a lot of the, I think I, I think I have every one of the storytellers series, you know, from with all the characters, I don't have the tree topper or, you know, the ship or any, you know, the ship tree topper or anything like that. I just, you know, I do collect some of the ornaments. We, we always get the Star Wars ones that we really like. We, we make it a point to get the ones that are like, you know,
00:17:37
Speaker
22 in the series, 23 in the series. We always get those. We always get the precious moments, Disney ones. We get quite an array of Hallmark ornaments every year. Oh, good for you guys. That's awesome. Usually I get the main Hallmark ornament for Star Trek. Sometimes I'll get the Star Wars ones, but I missed out on the Strange New World Enterprise. That's the only one of the whole collection I don't have of all the ships.
00:18:05
Speaker
I tried finding it at Steel City Con and I couldn't find it, so I'll just have to keep looking as time goes on. But that Enterprise B, I can't wait for that one.
00:18:16
Speaker
And then also there are a whole bunch of other ornaments that are going to be coming out. So they're also going to be coming out with the keeper, the Talosian from the original pilot, the cage that'll be hitting in July, which is actually for the 60th anniversary of the cage. That's a heart of belief. So yeah. Yeah. So he'll be priced at 1999 really pretty cheap ornament to pick up.
00:18:42
Speaker
Another one that people are really looking forward to there's a really nice one of dr crusher from i'd say around season six of the next generation. Have in uniform they also have her her her medical coat that you would always wear in the episodes and she's right order striking a nice pose. Looks very much like gates mcphad looks really good. So she is going to be coming out in october and show also be nineteen ninety nine.
00:19:09
Speaker
Then there's an, there's an ornament from unification part two, which has ambassador spots, data facing each other and talking. So it says this ornament will be priced around $29.99 and it'll be released in October and it'll play audio clips from the next generation episode. So that's a good keeper for anybody who's a big next gen fan and love those episodes, that two parter.
00:19:31
Speaker
Yeah. Now, here's the interesting one. And I was telling you about this before we started. So for those strange new world fans out there who love Captain Pike in his quaff, there's a good there's a very good ornament of Pike in the Enterprise captain's chair sitting there. He's got his legs crossed and he is coming out in October as well.
00:19:55
Speaker
And let's see here. So he'll be out in October and he is going to be twenty one ninety nine. And there will be strange new world audio clips. Now, the interesting thing about this ornament and a lot of people have been commenting it online. He is staring bug eyed straight ahead is always like peering into your brain like high on drugs or something like everybody's commenting about how scary the face looks because of these bugged out eyeballs.
00:20:25
Speaker
I don't know why they would make it the ornament look like that, but I don't know. It's going to be interesting. People are going to be commenting on that one for quite a while. Oh, yeah. People are probably going to buy this one just because he's got that spaced out look. Oh, I'm sure. And usually you don't really get a whole lot of complaints about the sculpts on the Hallmark ornaments. They're usually pretty good. Exactly. Exactly.
00:20:51
Speaker
Go to Trek Core dot com after the show and go down and look at this the link for this story and you'll see the eyeballs. There's a huge picture of it. So you'll see it for yourself. All right. It's pretty wild. And then there are a couple more mini figures or mini ornaments that are going to be coming out to add to their collection as well. So there's one of Spock from Star Trek The Motion picture that'll be coming out.
00:21:18
Speaker
And let's see here. That one will be $9.99 and out in October. And then there's a miniature version of the Refit Enterprise from Star Trek The Motion Picture as well. So this will kind of be like the second series in the Enterprise miniatures because last year we had an original one from the original series. So that one will be coming out as well and that will be at $10.99 and that will also be out in October.
00:21:46
Speaker
And then just as a little side note, it's not necessarily Star Trek, but it's kind of Star Trek. Do you ever watch Galaxy Quest? Oh, absolutely. I love that movie. Absolutely. Good, good movie. Obviously parody of Star Trek. And it's got a cult following. People love the movie to this day where they're releasing an ornament of the NSCA protector.
00:22:10
Speaker
Very nice. This is going to be really cool. So surprisingly, this is the 25th anniversary of Galaxy Quest.
00:22:18
Speaker
It sure does. So that will be out in October and it'll be $24.99. I don't see any news on what it does and whether or not it lights up talks or both, but that will be a great addition to any Star Trek collection, if anybody's interested in that. But that's my news roundup for so far for Star Trek. I'm sure there'll be a lot more stuff coming up in the next few months.
00:22:45
Speaker
Oh, I'm

Tales of the Empire: Star Wars Anthology Trailer Discussion

00:22:46
Speaker
sure. Alright, let's go to talk about some news slash trailers from the Star Wars side of things. So we got a trailer a couple weeks ago for Tales of the Empire. It is in the same style of animation as the Clone Wars and the Bad Batch. If you remember the
00:23:07
Speaker
the Tales of the Jedi that we got a couple years ago, this is basically the follow-up to that. While we wait for more Tales of the Jedi, we're getting Tales of the Empire. I would love to see bounty hunter tales or something like that. Also, in addition to this, I would love to see us get more and more of these
00:23:29
Speaker
Things because they remind me of the anthology books that I read growing up that had, you know, tales from job as palace tales of the bounty hunters, tales of the empire was a book to tales of the Jedi was a book. So there were all these like short anthology stories. And this is what that reminds me of. So.
00:23:47
Speaker
Yeah, I'm really excited that we're getting even more content of this type. So the episodes feature, heavily feature, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Morgan Ellsbeth, who was in the Ahsoka series and previously in the Mandalorian episode that also introduced Ahsoka, introduced her. So it's like we're going to get her history and her past before we see her in Ahsoka.
00:24:14
Speaker
So we might get to see some of her days with the Nightsisters or something like that, which would be kind of cool. The other major character that we got in the trailer was.
00:24:24
Speaker
Barris Offee, who is the Jedi Padawan who basically bombed Coruscant and blamed it on Ahsoka, which got her, you know, it led her to the trial when she left the Jedi Order. So we're actually going to get Barris's story. And it looks like she becomes an Inquisitor, which I thought was really a cool fate for her.
00:24:48
Speaker
So wow. Yeah. OK. Yeah. So did you? You did see that trailer, right? I saw the trailer, but I must have missed that part. I know Barris Offee was in the trailer and it kind of made me just want to rewatch that whole arc with Ahsoka and the trial. I just watched it over the weekend. And I knew I knew she was going to play into it somehow, but the thought of her becoming an inquisitor, I didn't piece that together. So that's going to be really cool to see.
00:25:14
Speaker
Yeah, I'm really excited for it. And we get all of those episodes are going to drop all at once on Disney Plus on May the 4th, the same day that you and I and several others are going to be taking in a baseball game. Yes. Yes. We're going to be going to PNC Park for Star Wars night, Saturday, May 4th, four or five game. And we're going with my Star Trek ship, the USS Stella Parada. It's going to be a lot of fun. It was I'm really excited. This is a side note about you meeting the crew. You're going to have a blast because they're a lot of fun.
00:25:43
Speaker
Nice. I can't wait. This is going to be exciting. Yeah. Yeah. I kind of have my eyes on that hot dog with the pierogies and the pool. I wasn't the pierogies and the roast beef, I think, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, I believe so. I believe so. Just so you know, the tickets come with a $10 food voucher. Oh, my goodness. OK.
00:26:05
Speaker
of us all going as a group. Nice. That's actually really cool that the Pirates did that for the group. Yes, absolutely. So yes, our Star Wars day is going to be very busy this year without a doubt. For sure. Yeah. Well, at least we'll be able to wake up in the morning, watch Tales of the Empire and then, you know, head into the city for an afternoon game.
00:26:26
Speaker
Absolutely. It's going to be a blast. Can't wait. Yep. All right. So that's really all the news that I have from the Star Wars side of things. Don't get technical with me. Logic. It is the beginning of the wisdom of marriage, not the end. A Jedi uses that force for knowledge and defense.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 In-depth Discussion

00:26:51
Speaker
Let's move on to our feature discussion here for this episode and that is Chris and I are. Stop, you know, I don't know. I can't believe we're saying this, but Chris and I are really, really enjoying discovery season five. Very much so. Never thought that would fly out of my mouth.
00:26:55
Speaker
Let's...
00:27:12
Speaker
So Chris, why don't you recap for the audience, you know, and especially people who are joining us for the first time, what your thoughts were on Discovery and why you kind of stopped watching it. Okay. So I've always enjoyed all versions of Star Trek.
00:27:29
Speaker
Part of what that was is because it all fit into a continuity. It felt like a long story with all the series and movies. Discovery, for the first time, took me out of it. It was supposed to be this prequel 10 years from the original series, and it just didn't fit to me. The technology was more advanced than Next Generation. The uniforms didn't fit. The stories, arcs didn't make sense. The Klingons looked absolutely ridiculous.
00:27:57
Speaker
It just got to the point where it every time I would watch it for what it was supposed to be, my brain would pull me out of it. And it never felt it always felt like something alternate. So it had nothing to do with the cast or the characters or anything. I actually enjoy the cast and the characters very, very much. And when I would watch the earlier episodes,
00:28:17
Speaker
It felt like i was enjoying science fiction but not a star trek show. I finally as time went on i just faded out of it and became very cold and callous toward the show. So this year if they decided they were gonna have some big treasure hunt kind of story which i thought was kind of interesting and there were rumors going around that it was gonna tie in.
00:28:39
Speaker
to a six season episode of the next generation called the chase where we find out there was a race of beings billions of years ago that seated a lot of m class worlds throughout the galaxy. And that's where humanoid life essentially came from. So it kind of piqued my interest that even that I was kind of like, you know what, it's discovery. I'm not going to watch it.
00:29:00
Speaker
So our last episode that we recorded together of this show and I decided okay if we're gonna we're gonna watch it and we're gonna review it for CLL I'll do it. I'll give it another shot. So I did in these first four episodes. I've been very impressed with they're excellent
00:29:18
Speaker
Mm hmm. I really enjoy them as well. I think it is definitely the best that Discovery has ever been. It took it. It's sad that it took it four seasons to really find a formula that works and feels like Star Trek. I know they were kind of building towards it with moving Discovery, you know, beyond the latest time in the Federation that we were aware of, which was it is what, the 25th century?
00:29:48
Speaker
It's the 32nd century now. Yeah, but previously Star Trek, Star Trek had only gone to the 25th century, correct?
00:29:56
Speaker
Yeah, yes, because Picard just entered the 25th century now. Yeah, this is farther than any other Star Trek series is gone. It's a cold slate. They can do what they want. Yeah. So this is 30 seconds century. OK. Yeah. Yeah. So basically, yeah, they can write Trek canon however they want to because of where this show is taking place. But yeah, I'm really, really into the treasure hunt vibe. It feels like
00:30:20
Speaker
It feels like an Indiana Jones movie or a serialized adventure film like Sahara or even the National Treasure films. It kind of feels like that just on a much larger scale. And again, we've got some pretty intriguing villains in the series.
00:30:40
Speaker
you know, they want to, they basically, do they want to use the MacGuffin themselves or are they trying to just sell it to the highest bidder? That one I'm trying to figure out. I think they're trying to, they want to learn the secrets of
00:30:58
Speaker
with what the McGuffin will lead to, what the technology will be. That's pretty much the vibe I'm getting. And they're kind of hoping that maybe that once they use the McGuffin and they find the technology, they can use it to save lives, extend the lifespan, things like that is kind of what it comes up to in the last four episodes. OK. OK. Yeah. Yeah. But it does definitely have a rise of Skywalker kind of feel to it.
00:31:24
Speaker
Yeah, but, you know, better written. I'm not putting that down. I know. Yeah, that's just that's kind of what that reminded me of, because people complained about the MacGuffin in Rise of Skywalker. But I mean, you need stuff like that sometimes to just kind of move the plot along. So at the end of the brain, you know. Right. But this is a little bit more compelling than some dagger that can lead to ancient Sith secrets that happen to be on the second Death Star.
00:31:55
Speaker
I know I know you have your feelings. I'm so traumatized from that movie. I gotcha. I gotcha. But yeah, you're right. Because I mean, this ties into Star Trek history and fills in a little bit more about about this ancient race, you know, and what I liked about about this story arc, too, is that
00:32:16
Speaker
When they did the chase, it made it sound like there was just DNA on certain worlds, Earth, Chronos, Vulcan, Cardassia, that kind of stuff. But now they're saying it basically seeded the entire galaxy. So that kind of bumps it up a little bit. And now the whole galaxy is basically, you know, united as kind of a race. Yeah. Yeah. But I mean, it's still like how
00:32:41
Speaker
How did the trill factor into this? Is it that just they happened because the humanoid life was seated on trill, but were the symbiotes already there? That's a very good question.
00:32:56
Speaker
Like, and how did they develop that symbiotic relationship? How did they figure out, oh, let's join with this worm-like creature and, you know, we can preserve memories and stuff for, you know, generations. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It's kind of, it's weird to kind of.
00:33:12
Speaker
Think about it. And it's weird for me to kind of put it in a different spot because me as a Christian, I don't believe in evolution. So it's for me to kind of shift my brain into how this arc kind of works that we were all seated billions of years ago. It's kind of foreign for me. So those kind of questions come up. Like, how did this work? How did that work? You know?
00:33:35
Speaker
Who'd have thought we were talking about how symbiotic species work in Star Trek, right? Exactly. Exactly. But that's the fun about these kind of shows is kind of debating, you know, how things happened and it gets conversations going. It's kind of like in fanboys when
00:33:53
Speaker
And the two characters were talking about whether or not Luke had a thing for Leia, something like that. Just those kind of little minutia arguments. Right. You know, so yeah, I mean, so that'll keep people at least talking about the show. That that's part of the positive. Yeah. All right. So we kind of gave a little overview of our thoughts of the season so far after four episodes. Let's let's dive in a little bit deeper into each episode. Yeah, go ahead. Why don't you give us your synopsis on episode one?
00:34:23
Speaker
Okay, so the first episode was called Red Directives and basically what happens is an 800 year old Romulan science vessel was found and it has some sort of Romulan box on it and the crew go there because they know that there's some sort of secret possibly that's in that box that they don't want to fall into the wrong hands.
00:34:44
Speaker
And there are two villains named Lock and Mall, who are going to be our villains for the season, who managed to take the box. And then they went to a planet, I believe it was called Kumal. And they met with an android, a song type android, Fred, who was actually able to open the box and find some sort of diary in it with a sketch. It basically kind of talks about the location of where or a plan of how to find this technology, this ancient technology.
00:35:14
Speaker
that that no one really seems to know a whole lot about so. Tilly is hacking into the database during the entire episode trying to figure out what the item is. And they find out it again is about some sort of ancient technology and that it's hidden in quote the shadow of twin moons so.
00:35:35
Speaker
They so the discovery finally find lock and mall on this planet Fred is destroyed or at least deactivated and they try to go after them to try to get the item and there's this big speeder chase on the planet and lock them all end up causing some sort of avalanche or something to try to stop book and
00:35:54
Speaker
Burn them from trying to get the item. And so Discovery and the USS Antares, which Captain Rainer is commanding, I guess Rainer gets it into his head of, oh, why don't we crash the ships into the planet using our shields to try to stop the Avalanche and save the inhabitants there of Tatooine. Oh, I'm sorry, I mean.
00:36:33
Speaker
And so we find out from an older Starfleet admiral that this technology has been known about, and that the Romulan, there was a Romulan, if you watch the episode, The Chase, there's a group of Romulans that are on that ancient planet. And one of them, they say, is a Romulan doctor named Dr. Velik, who knew about
00:36:39
Speaker
You're not sorry at all. Don't lie to me.
00:36:54
Speaker
This ancient race called the progenitors and the diary is the first piece of finding the device that created life. So that's what sets up the rest of the story arc for this year is to find this device and apparently this all this information in Starfleet has been classified for centuries for obvious reasons.
00:37:12
Speaker
And so the twin moons that they were talking about earlier in the episode, they through discussion, they realize it's in a system, I believe it's called the Valine system. And so that's where they had to find the first part of the map to try to figure out where this device is at. So I really love this episode. It really opened up the season very well. It was very action and
00:37:36
Speaker
action adventure with the speeder chase. We actually got a lot of little nuggets from Star Trek's past about, I mean, Fred. So apparently the song androids must have started being made maybe a little bit more on mass after Picard season three. And so Fred was just happened to be one of those those who knows how many more out there.
00:37:57
Speaker
But that was an awesome little key. I wish they would have kept him around a little longer, maybe had him helping them through the adventure throughout the season. That would have been fun. There are also some neat little nuggets from 24th century.
00:38:10
Speaker
timeframe, there was an ice linear chip that lock and mall brought to Fred, a tricorder self-sealing stem bolt. And then obviously the box that had the book in it as well. So that was cool. We also have the little side story where Starfleet now is wanting to promote a screw to becoming a Federation ambassador, which would be really, I guess beneficial for him and for his girlfriend, I guess. Well, well, it's arena.
00:38:38
Speaker
Torina. Yeah. Well, I mean, they're engaged now, actually. Yes. I think that's what happened in the first episode. She goes to Saru. She did. Yes. Yeah. So yeah. So that opens up a whole new arc for what might be happening with Saru as well. And of course, it brought it helped to bring a little bit of Burnham and Saru story kind of heading toward like some sort of positive closure. Because if you remember at the beginning of the series, they were at odds with each other because she mutinied on board the Shenzo.
00:39:07
Speaker
Oh, very much. Yeah. Yeah. And it took a lot of time for him, her to rebuild trust with him and with the rest of the crew. So now they're actually kind of facing a point where they're never, they're not going to be working together for the first time in years and having to say goodbye. So yeah. So that's, that's like the little first piece of knowing that the show starting to wrap up, that they're starting to shift their players a little bit.
00:39:29
Speaker
Yeah, I like how they're making moves for all these characters and kind of putting them into where they end up, what they do after Discovery.
00:39:41
Speaker
And, you know, it's I know we've got the Starfleet Academy series coming out with with Tilly as the primary instructor and main character, I believe. Right. Yes. Yes. And that was a big thing in the premiere. They made sure that they said Tilly was brought back from the academy to help them with this this situation, this scenario.
00:40:02
Speaker
And I love that character so much. She's she's been what my favorite character of this new cast, this new crew since her introduction. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, she's always had that different kind of quirky vibe that none of the other characters had. You know, the little Star Trek shows the characters kind of come off as perfect and they're very grounded and know what they're doing. She was always very unsure of herself, but she always had goals for herself.
00:40:28
Speaker
And she just, as the years have gone on, she seems to have been able to kind of realize her potential and stand up for herself as standard ground. Yeah. And I think, you know, her, her time as captain Kelly in the mirror universe is no small part of, you know, how she learned to be more of a self advocate.
00:40:47
Speaker
Absolutely. Absolutely. I agree. Yeah. I'm sure that that was very kind of life changing for her and got her on the right path. Definitely. So what did you think of this episode? I mean, I kind of, you know, I kind of expressed how I felt about it. I think, you know, I thought that the the episode was really action packed. I thought this, you know, the speeder chase, the swoop bike chase, whatever you want to call it, you know, very reminiscent of Star Wars. But hey,
00:41:16
Speaker
You know, that's, that's okay. Star Wars, that was a lot to dune. So why not just keep, you know, passing it down, right? Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. You've seen one desert planet. You've seen them all. It doesn't matter. Arrakis, Tatooine, Jakku, Kumal, whatever, you know.
00:41:35
Speaker
There, you know, persona in that other movie, Rise of Skywalker. Oh, there you go. Oh, yeah. Also a persona. That was the one where, you know, the whole they fly now thing. And then, you know, that's where they found the knife. Of course. Absolutely. Yeah. It was just happened to be there.
00:41:57
Speaker
Anyway, there we go. We're sidestepping. Yeah, we always do. Yeah. I thought the episode was really good. I thought it was a great introduction to the series. I thought, you know, it was, it was really fast paced and just a great way to kick off the season. Absolutely. Okay. Great. Well, let's go on to season five, episode two under the twin moons.
00:42:19
Speaker
So discovery ends up going to that the system of the lean system and found the planet i think there is actually there were three moons of the planet but because two of them actually are like a lock together they function as one move. Essentially so that's why when moves.
00:42:35
Speaker
Let's see here. So they go down to this planet, which was really interesting because it found out it was from the Pramelians. It was an old base from about a couple thousand years before. If nobody remembers who the Pramelians are, there was a third season episode, the next generation booby trap. And the Pramelians were trapped in this long, long war and they had been gone for a thousand years. And the enterprise ended up finding a Pramelian battleship, which turned out to be a booby trap for
00:43:02
Speaker
That the enterprise got caught in that it was never supposed to be but that's that was the link there They find a whole bunch of old skeletons which apparently seemed to be from some cradle robbers and then they end up getting attacked by these little flying droids that come out of the eyes of these statues that are scattered around and So apparently what ended up happening was is Burnham overloaded a phaser inside the head where the eyes were at and was able to destroy the power source so they were able to get away from the droids and
00:43:32
Speaker
Um, they ended up finding these different pillars and they find what seems to be ancient writing and they use some sort of Romulan device to be able to kind of help them to reconstruct this poem apparently. And there were like five stanzas, but they were able to get all of them, but I believe the fourth one. And so with the fifth verse, they were able to, there was also this little opening and, and Burnham opened up the lid and she found an actual piece of the map
00:44:01
Speaker
the map that's going to lead them to the final item from the progenitors.
00:44:06
Speaker
So they 3D painted the symbol in the diary and they were able to actually put the piece together. So now they're going to be able to assemble the map. They also find out through the poem that Trill is the next place they need to go. There's another place they need to go to, which is Beta-Z, but in lock and mall ended up not knowing about the other stanza that they found. So they end up going to Beta-Z while they end up going to Trill.
00:44:32
Speaker
And then there's another side story going on about how what book thinks that he can try to find a way to talk down mall and lock, but he wasn't for a while. He wasn't able to trace them, but he was finally able to make contact. And after he had the contact with them and they said they wouldn't drop the situation that the their mission.
00:44:50
Speaker
He realizes that he recognizes mom apparently she is her name is maline and she's the daughter of cleveland booker the fourth i guess is an ancestor. So there's some sort of connection between the two of them.
00:45:06
Speaker
But that's really about as far as it played out. Some other little things that happened outside the main story is Captain Ramer and Burnham were at a trial at the beginning of the episode and Ramer basically was being told to be given early retirement. We find out that out at the end of the episode. Burnham, because Saru is going to be going off with Tarina and he's going to be this ambassador. There's a spot for first officer, so she has Ramer become her number one.
00:45:34
Speaker
So that was pretty much the episode. This episode, I really, really loved. I loved some of the callbacks like that. Promelian stuff really excited me because I love booby traps. One of my favorite episodes. Yeah. Kind of getting to see them just this one off race being brought up again and kind of seeing their technology and culture sprinkled out was really kind of fun. I love that Raymer actually kind of got a second chance with Burnham and it kind of ties into how Burnham story throughout the whole series about how she got a second chance. She had to work for it.
00:46:04
Speaker
but she was given that chance and that's basically what she's doing with Ramer right now. You know, one thing I was kind of wondering at the end of the episode before I saw the other one was how is he going to deal with being demoted?
00:46:15
Speaker
You know, that would be kind of a rough thing to take, but I guess if you're going to be retired, better to be demoted down a commander and be a first officer than not be there at all. Pretty much. Yeah. You know, so. Yeah. And then, you know, we would kind of find him make his peace with that in a couple of episodes later, too. So absolutely. Absolutely. By the way, as a side note, I didn't realize that he wasn't Vulcan the way his ears look. I thought he was Vulcan and just had like some sort of scars or something. Yeah.
00:46:42
Speaker
Yeah, I was surprised to hear that he's actually a Keller. And that was from an episode of Deep Space Nine. But anyway, right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And they were they were an antagonizing species in that episode of DS9, weren't they? Yes. I'm trying to remember what the name was. Apocalypse game or something like that. Basically, it was in season two of Deep Space Nine. The Kelleran and the Talani had been warring with each other for many, many years and they created something called the Harvesters, which was some sort of bio engineered
00:47:12
Speaker
disease and they were destroying all all of that the harvesters that were left with o'brien and this year's help. And so what they ended up decided to do the two races was to kill anybody who had any knowledge of the harvesters and they killed everybody except for o'brien and odo and then they had to go and.
00:47:34
Speaker
they tried to go after them. Basically, that was the whole point of the episode. So yeah, I think it was called actually Armageddon game, I think was the name of the episode. But yes, that was that was it. I didn't know that. So that's how out of touch with discovery I've been.
00:47:48
Speaker
You know, but so that was cool. But yeah, I thought it was a great episode. The droid attack was a lot of fun. Then actually figuring out the the poem and being able to scan all the old writing. That was really neat. And then seeing the book has a connection to mall. That'll be interesting to see how that plays out. So yeah. And whether he. You know, I don't know whether he you know.
00:48:13
Speaker
whether he can convince them or not to drop what they're doing or if he thinks he's convinced them and then they turn around and double cross him. Yeah, I'm interested to see what happens. I just hope it doesn't end with his death.
00:48:27
Speaker
Yes, exactly. I agree with you on that. So you have any other thoughts about this episode? I thought it was a lot of fun. And yeah, I kind of second your excitement over all the Easter eggs from DNG and from the 24th century in general, because it's nice to see those callbacks.
00:48:48
Speaker
to, you know, to the trek that for you, especially, you know, that was that's your favorite series. Yes, absolutely. So yes, getting to see a little few nuggets. And this is the whole thing. This whole season is based on next generation, essentially kind of makes it extra, extra fun. Definitely.
00:49:05
Speaker
So now going into the next episode, season five, episode three, Janal, this is definitely heavily Deep Space Nine oriented. So we find out this was this was interesting. So they they find a pattern of spots on the piece of the map that they found in the previous episode.
00:49:23
Speaker
And they said that the trill spots are actually unique, just like a fingerprint. And they find out that the person who had this item was named Janal Bix and he was alive 800 years ago. They find out that the Bix symbion is still alive in an individual named Lazara Bix. So they end up going to trill and to talk to the guardians to see if they can have any contact with this Lazara lady.
00:49:49
Speaker
So they make contact with a previous character, Guardian Z, and he gives them some sort of code or something to do with the poem that we just talked about. And Burnham gives the answer, so they end up going down the trill.
00:50:04
Speaker
And they end up engaging what's called the Zhantara, which was in an episode of Deep Space Nine near the end of the third season. I think it was called Facets, which was basically what happens is the memories of a particular host that's still in the symbiont get transferred into a humanoid body for a breezy period of time. So what they did was they brought Janal into Culber's body.
00:50:29
Speaker
And Janal leads Burnham and Book out into this no man zone, basically this rocky area where apparently he hid the next piece of the of the map 800 years ago. Well, I ended up getting attacked by a couple of big Star Wars creatures. Yeah. Yeah. Basically, we're trying to kill them. And eventually what ends up happening is this book ends up using the force or is
00:50:58
Speaker
to be able to reason with them and let these creatures know that they're not, they don't mean any harm. And Book and Burnham realized that these two are protecting their eggs. So it makes sense that they were attacking. But basically, Janal had just kind of led them a little bit on a wild goose chase just to kind of see if he could trust them and see if they were actually good people so that he was able to actually give them the piece of the map. And let's see, I'm trying to see what else here.
00:51:26
Speaker
So, and then the other part of the episode that was going on, Adira Tall ended up going and meeting with Grey down on Trill. And basically they kind of talked about how hard it was to have their relationship back and forth, I guess, long distance the way it was. So they decided to break up, but they said they were going to remain really good friends. That was a big piece. And then there was another part of the story.
00:51:52
Speaker
where Saru was talking about the wedding announcement that he and Tarina were supposed to put out. And she has some sort of aid that
00:52:03
Speaker
doesn't seem to be really supportive of the relationship. And so he basically pulls Saru aside and says that he's affecting Tarina's political career, which kind of leads to Saru wondering if they should hold off their engagement or even break up. And they have their Vulcan equivalent of some argument, I guess. But they end up realizing that they need to be together and that they're going to, they need to put the announcement out.
00:52:29
Speaker
And then there was the whole thing about Rainer that was trying to interview and try to get to know the crew in his own way by having them talk about their lives in 20 seconds or in 20 words, something to that effect. And Tillie finally got in his face about it, about how disrespectful he was and
00:52:44
Speaker
Kind of led him through the episode to kind of realize better ways to be able to earn the respect of the crew rather than. Being nasty that I've been treating them like automatons. 30 second interviews in 21 words or less. Yeah, it was it was it was very this was this was probably my favorite episode of the whole season so far. Just having all that tie into Deep Space Nine with the trail and the genre and you had like four different stories going on in it and it all meshed very, very well.
00:53:12
Speaker
It really did. I don't know who the writers room is on this season, but they are nailing it. Yes. Mm hmm. Yeah. And again, you and I talked about this before we started recording.
00:53:26
Speaker
The characters are all all seem to have a role in things that they need to do whether they're helping with this this big story trying to find the device or they're doing little side things that are still affecting the story it's not the Michael Burnham show this season it's everybody is contributing.
00:53:42
Speaker
You know, yes and no. I still think a lot of the bridge crew really aren't getting much screen time or much really. Yeah, they really, you know, their their role really isn't high stakes. You know, it's it's basically, you know, they're there to keep the ship. Moving towards its, you know, eventual target, but they're not really getting their own stories, which is kind of a shame.
00:54:05
Speaker
Right. It is a shame, but I see them more as like secondary or tertiary characters. So, but I would say the one, the main regulars actually seem to be all contributing and having some sort of unique role this season, you know, outside of just being like, Oh, we're going to, we're just going to listen to Michael. You know, so, but yeah, I agree with you. I think some of those bridge crews, if they could flush them out a little bit, maybe as the season goes on, we'll get a little bit more so that since the show's ending, you know, a little something.
00:54:32
Speaker
maybe hopefully. Yeah. All right. Yeah. That leads us into episode four, which is face the strange. So this, this is the episode that kind of took a little detour from the main story, but it was really good. So basically the ship,
00:54:49
Speaker
At the end, I forgot to mention this in general at the end of the end of the episode, a little device is placed on tall by malls. They ended up finding them on troll. They figured it out. So this little device ends up coming loose off of tall and it turns into some sort of like spider like bug.
00:55:07
Speaker
And it's kind of going through the whole ship and it starts to disrupt the systems. And I guess what it does is it's fractures the ship into where to the point where it kind of. They flash through different time periods at random after like 15 minutes or something to that effect. And so.
00:55:26
Speaker
We go back to the time when they're still in the 23rd century. We go actually past the point where a few years after this episode is supposed to take place, we found out that the Federation actually is destroyed by the progenitor's weapon. And so Rainer and Burnham realized that they need to make sure that that doesn't happen. So they actually have to work with kind of their past

Or at least burn them does has to work with her past crew to get them to trust her so that they can they can destroy this this time bug i think is what they call the time bug. So that way they can stop the fracture the ship and they can move forward with their mission so.
00:56:04
Speaker
Yeah, I thought it was it was a really good episode. I consider it probably the filler episode of the season because it took that little detour, but it doesn't mean it was a bad episode. It was actually very interesting and it reminded me instantly of a seventh season episode of Voyager called shattered.
00:56:19
Speaker
where the ship is actually struck by some sort of electromagnetic bolt or whatever. And it literally fractured the ship into different time periods and they would be able to cross into the different time periods and kind of basically explored all seven years of the show. And that's kind of like what we got here. But I think that was really good because it helped to get people like me, you haven't watched the show in a while, kind of reintroduced to what the show was about and where it's how far it's come along based on this season.
00:56:48
Speaker
Yeah. And I loved how this episode did go back to season one of Discovery. And, you know, it was Michael had to try and convince, you know, the crew who only knew her as the mutineer that she was trying to save basically the Federation, save the ship, save all of, you know, of the world that we know. But she used her knowledge that she gained from
00:57:13
Speaker
interacting with these crew members over the years to finally convince them that she was from the future and she was no longer a mutiny or she was no longer trying to undermine the ship. Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. Go ahead.
00:57:31
Speaker
Yeah, and I just loved all the and I love the callback to the short treks episode, you know, where the Federation is destroyed. And, you know, that was all the way back in season one. And, you know, everybody wondered, well, this is such a good short trek, but what does it all mean? Well, we got an answer, which is which is wild. Absolutely. Yeah, they tied it up very beautifully and they did. They had a really great one off episode. It helped. You can see it helped build Ramer and
00:58:01
Speaker
Burnham's relationship and their ability to trust each other. I think rarers through the fact that the ship was there bouncing through these timelines. I think it helped him to realize how the crew learns how you can count on your crew, how you can work with them and that that helps to build a rapport so you guys work better as a unit. You know, absolutely. He's finally seeing that. And I think we'll start seeing a little bit more change in his character now that we're hitting the midpoint of the season. Yeah.
00:58:27
Speaker
And I do like how this episode really played with the classic Trek trope of the time loop, right? You know, where every time that they jumped into a different time, you know, they, you know,
00:58:40
Speaker
it was a different length of time that they had to spend there before it would shift again. And it was like a helix pattern, ultimately, is what they've figured out. When they were on the outside arc, the wider arc, they had more time. And as it got closer to the center, they had less time in that time period. So it was a clever way to change up expectations.
00:59:09
Speaker
Absolutely. Absolutely. So I don't know what the next episode is going to be about, but I can't wait until Thursday now to watch it. Right. It's going to be. Yeah. So I'll make sure that I get to work early, set up my laptop and my thing before I start with my clients. There you go. Yeah. So you you've heard it from us. We really are loving this season of discovery. It's just a shame that it took so long to get a season that both of us just really, really enjoy.
00:59:38
Speaker
I think the next time we revisit Discovery, it's going to be after the series has wrapped for all forever. Once it airs its final episode, I think we'll get back together and talk about our thoughts on that. I think by then we'll also have some Star Trek content.
00:59:59
Speaker
some Star Wars content to talk about in the form of Tales of the Empire. So yeah, I think we'll probably come back and discuss both of those in a future episode. Chris, any final thoughts on Discovery season five so far?
01:00:16
Speaker
Not really any more than I've just said. I just can't wait to see how the next six episodes come into play. I can't wait to see what this device is going to be like and how it's going to affect the ending of the series. Is it going to cause a final finality or is it just going to be something where they kind of move on and then they have their adventures off screen at what we just won't see anymore?
01:00:38
Speaker
Oh, maybe they'll take the device and put it in a giant wooden crate and put it in a warehouse that is 10 miles long. That would be a great idea. Oh, wait, that that was that other movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, right? Yeah, you got it. You got it. Hey, you never know. You never know what they'll do.

Chris' Solar Eclipse Experience

01:00:59
Speaker
So I wanted to actually end this episode by talking about the eclipse.
01:01:04
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, go for it. Yeah, you took a trip to see that as close to the totality of the eclipse as possible, right? We were actually in totality completely. Okay. Yeah, so I went with my younger brother and my mother. We went to a small town right outside of Erie so we could avoid all the traffic and chaos.
01:01:24
Speaker
And we ended up just setting up in a church parking lot. It was the three of us, my best friends or my brother's best friend and his family. And we met two people from Connellsville that they just kind of showed up. And so we had a beautiful view. We were scared at first because it started getting cloudy right before.
01:01:45
Speaker
But all out of nowhere, it just opened up. It just was completely it just completely cleared up. So, yeah, so we got to watch it with through the glasses, watching the moon starting to go in front of the front of the sun. In the three minutes of totality, we were actually able to take our glasses off and actually look at it with our bare eyes. Oh, really? Yeah, apparently my younger brother did the research. He said that that was actually safe.
01:02:10
Speaker
Yeah so yeah we got to see and it was the coolest thing it was like the big black marble in the sky with this white. White silhouette around it you know with like the flames and stuff it was the coolest thing to actually see it like i was in almost like when william shatner went into space and he saw earth.
01:02:30
Speaker
For the first time, the miracle of creation and just seeing earth from a different perspective. That's kind of how it felt to me. It was that moment, you know, just seeing what, you know, again, for me with creation and stuff, what God created and what he was able to show with nature. It was just, it was, it was just mind blowing. And it was really cool too, because it was neat watching it starting to get progressively darker.
01:02:55
Speaker
and the temperature starting to drop. And by totality, it looked like it was 830 at night. That's crazy. Yeah, people were driving with their headlights on. The only real light that you could see was like in the distance. It looked like the sun had just gone down over the horizon. And there was that little glow, orange glow of the sky. That was it.
01:03:18
Speaker
So it was just it was mind blowing. The fact that we were able to go in and do that was just was we were very lucky to do. I'd like to go do it again in 20 years, but it's not going to be anywhere near Pennsylvania the next time. The closest we'd have to travel is Florida. Yeah, that's a long way to walk. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. So, yeah. But I mean, I'll be in my 60s. Hopefully I'll still be able to want to make the trip. But who knows? Right now. Yeah. To see it at all.
01:03:45
Speaker
Unfortunately, no, I was driving home from work at the time of when it was visible and, you know, where I live and yeah, didn't really get to see it. Cause I mean, even if I hadn't been working, it was really overcast and cloudy, so didn't really get to see much of anything at all. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, things happen, right? Yeah. Well, I got, I'm sure you got to see it probably got pretty dark.
01:04:14
Speaker
Yeah, it did. It definitely did get dark for a while. And hey, in 20 years, I mean, I'll still be, yeah, I'll be in my sixties too. So heck, and we already do visit Florida on a regular basis. So you never know. Yeah. So you'll know the shrimp, but yeah. Yeah. You know, so cool. Thank you for letting me mention that on the show. Yeah, of course. It was awesome.
01:04:36
Speaker
Of course. I'm glad you got to experience that and you know, have, have really an experience of a lifetime. It was, it really was. I mean, to me, that was the closest we're going to get to any kind of like seeing earth in a different perspective. Yep. Absolutely. All right. So I think that's a good place to end this episode of captain's logs and lightsabers. Don't you think? Absolutely. All right. So until we get back together to discuss whatever that may be, uh,
01:05:06
Speaker
May the force be with you. And look long and prosper.
