This is your Wildcard Wednesday, as we preview the Bees' promising new right back Michael Kayode who has joined the club from Fiorentina.  We consider whether this is the solution to our lack of options at full back, and what this means for Mads Roerslev if his rumoured move to Wolfsburg is to come to fruition.

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself Daniel where today we will be previewing Brentford's latest signing in right back Michael Coyote from Serie A side Fiorentina. Just before we get going guys we're a brand new company so we're looking for your support this season and beyond as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network. Whether this is a five-star review on your favourite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends we are very grateful for any support that we receive.

Michael Coyote's Career Highlights

00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then, Brentford have signed a fallback to hopefully help us with our fallback issues and lack of depth over the last two seasons now with Aaron Hickey and Marika Henry both suffering with long-term injuries. We have signed 20-year-old Italian right back Michael Coyote on an initial loan deal from Serie A side Fiorentina with an option to make the deal permanent for around 14 million in the summer.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Michael Coady is a young player he's only featured 12 times this season however last season he played 36 games in all competitions including helping Fiorentina finish eighth in Serie A and reaching the conference league final which they lost 1-0 I believe to Olympiacos. Coyote also won the Italian Golden Boy award in 2024, which is awarded to ah the best or the most promising young Italian player, which is very, very promising. Having looking at his statistics and I have taken his statistics from Serie A last year,
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um to compare him to other players of similar positions. I've done this because he simply played more games last year, so it will give us a bit more of a realistic sample size. Remember, he would have only been 19 at this stage, but offensively he was rated very highly for successful crosses, cross-accuracy and successful dribbles, and defensively he was rated highly for tackles, interceptions and recoveries.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, looking at that, he he almost sounds like the perfect defender. I mean, what well I would say is why has he featured less this season? um It might be that Fiorentina have a new manager and he just doesn't fancy him. um But, you know, these things are something that I need to think about. You know, what why hasn't he featured so much this season? Why hasn't he kicked on at his young age? But having said that,
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is 20 years old. I think Brent for signing players of this profile gives me, um, it makes me excited for the future.

Brentford's Defensive Future

00:02:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, if we look at Brentford's potential defense now, um, if, ah if Aaron Hickey has to play at left back, he's in his early twenties, Michael Cody at right back early twenties. And then if we have the likes of Nathan Collins and set Vandenberg, but also both in their early twenties.
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, that could be a Brentford defence who could be pretty strong, you know, you could say for the next 10 or so years. Um, and if Hakov out of Mars and behind them comes on, then, you know, he could be part of Brentford teacher as well. So I think it's good for planning for the club. I think 14 million for a player who has been rated as the best young Italian talent and played so many games, um, for a side finishing in the European spots in a major European league.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and reaching the conference league final I think is a bargain considering his age. You would assume he's only likely to get better and that value of 14 million is only likely to go up and up. So it all looks very promising. um He reminds me a little bit of Aaron Hickey when he first came into Brentford. I think we should reserve judgement and ease expert expectations slightly given his age. um Aaron Hickey of course came at a similar age but he had experiences in Scotland um playing in the top at the top level in Scotland before he moved over to Italy and then he had more experience in Italy so Aaron Hickey did come over with more footballing experience despite coming over at a similar age Michael Coyote prior to last season has only really played youth football and lower league football in Italy up until his breakout season so I definitely think we'll likely see him improve
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
but from what I can see and what I have read based on what but he's good at, he looks like a ah very Thomas Frank type, full back, you know, Thomas Frank with, likes him as Ross, they have likes him to get on the overlap, um help out Brian and Boomer on that right hand side, get crosses in and also it's important defensively um that he can do that side of the game what Rico Henry for example does so well when he's fit you know to stop opposition wingers essentially and and that that could be a hard thing to do in the Premier League with um you know some of the wingers being some of the best in the world so
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he has got the attributes to be really, really good. um Again, successful dribbles that help us get up the pitch, perhaps in games where we find it a little bit more difficult to play out from the back. I would like to see how good he is on the ball and if he can help us with the way we're trying to play this season in terms of playing out more um from the back, going shorter and instead instead of launching the ball long.

Coyote's Role and Impact in Brentford

00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't necessarily expect there to be too much pressure on him straight away. I don't think he needs to be the regular starter. and With Christopher Iyer back as well, I think Christopher Iyer can cover cover it right back. Keen Lewis Potter of course is doing so well at left back. um Rico Henry again in the next couple of months could could come back into the fold and Aaron Hickey when he did his new contract interview sounded like he may only be ah you know five or six weeks away as well. so When everyone's fit, we'll have depth in that position. I've heard that coyote can also play left back if needed, which is likely to be helpful. It's always good to have full backs. You can cover both sides and make some more versatile and make some often more to the team. So, yeah, I think this is a really tidy piece of business from Brentford. I don't think you can criticize it for the value.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
that it's been, it's very difficult to do business in January. The fact that it's an initial load and I think it's only an option to make the deal permanent means that even if you know, in the next six months, this really doesn't work out.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um then it is likely that Coyote would just go back to Fiorentina and we won't have lost much money from the whole transaction so I can't see that happening I think he will sign for Brentford I think every intention from the Brentford officials are to make this permanent in the summer and I'm looking forward to seeing him and I hope he'll be playing a part on off the bench perhaps at the weekend against Tottenham After the break then, we will be speaking about another Renfrew player, this time Mads Roslev, also a right back, and we'll be asking what the arrival of Michael Coyote likely means for him at the time of recording.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast.

Mads Roslev's Loan Rumors

00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then as the January transfer window is in the process of concluding, I believe it concludes on Monday, which is the second of February. There are rumors at a time of recording on Monday that Mads Roslev is on the verge of heading out on loan to Wolfsburg. There's even rumors that the medical is being completed.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
and um everything looks good on that front. So it does very much look like Masfrost have all been a part in the club um and has played his last game for Brentford. The club he is heading to is Wolfsburg who currently sits um quite high up in the Bundesliga and they will have an option to buy, it will be an initial loan, a bit like Michael Coyote with an option to buy at the end of the season for around five and a half million. Now,
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I will say about Masvostev is no matter what anyone thinks about his abilities, and in that sense, I do agree that it is likely Coyote can be an upgrade.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
particularly in the long term, I think given that Ross there's 26 and coyotes 20, it's only natural as well to assume that coyote will improve and perhaps his ceiling is likely to be higher than Mads Ross there. I do also think perhaps Brentford are really looking towards those European places in the Premier League. Maybe we can do an upgrade in that position. But having said all of that, I don't think you can fall Mads Ross says place in Brentford history and his dedication to the team. I think If Palace at the weekend was likely to beat what was his last game, he would have known, first of all, that it would be his last game. I think it says a lot that he played that game. I think you see all the time players who are pushing for moves that, you know, disappear from the team sheet. We saw it live in Tony at the start of the season. He obviously did not feature this season, but he was still a Brentford player until, you know, the end of August.
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and with Maz Roslev, you know, he obviously wanted to play against Palace. He obviously owes a lot to the team. He obviously has a really good relationship with the with the other players. I think he has a brilliant relationship with Thomas Frank, who really likes him. He was the last player back down the tunnel at the end of the Palace game as well. So it was almost like he was just taking that moment in from the Brantford fans. I think It's a shame at times that he's come on the end of criticism. It's not his fault as such that, you know, he is being put into so many, um, big games, crucial games. Um, and he's often in those positions because, you know, he is simply all available, always available. Um, and you know, in some ways the best availability is, um, uh, best abilities, availability, and I think,
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Despite some mistakes, despite some mixed performances for what it's worth, I think he has improved quite a lot, actually, in recent weeks as well. I think we've seen a higher output for him. I think he should always but always be remembered for those positive things. And I think when we think of Maz Rostev, the biggest memory I have of him is the wonderful assist at Wembley in the playoff final.
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
took a lot of composure in that moment to hold the ball where he did, wait for the runners, Marcóndez in this case, and play the ball to Marcóndez as he did to the edge of the area. And we all know what happened from there. And, you know, the fact that I remember that so clearly, the fact that a lot of Brentford fans remember that so clearly mean that he will go down in Brentford history, I think.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
as any player from this squad, the from from the promotion squad, who leaves the club, I think they will have a special place in Brentford history as a result of that, no matter how good they are, no matter how much of a role they played. And for the fact that Maz Rossev was front and center, again, available for that Wembley game, um likely replacing an injured player, I think, um the likes of Henry Dowsgard,

Following Brentford on Social Media

00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think could play that that day. so He was always there and he was there at the right time. And, you know, he has got that quality. we I've said it on the podcast. I think he doesn't always show it, but he does have quality. You do see facets of quality and he has got the ability to play balls for the club. And we saw it that day at Wembley. So I think for that alone, he will be remembered.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of what this means for him, I think Wolfsburg is a brilliant move. To be honest, they are currently seventh in the Bundesliga, which means they have a shot at achieving European football next season. And I think this essentially shows the strength of the Premier League. The fact that, you know, Brentford's second choice right back, or third choice right back when everyone's fit, is able to attract interest um of a club in another major European league.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
that are chasing Europe. I think it shows the strength of the Premier League, the quality of the Premier League and that players are looking to, or clubs are looking to sign players from teams like Brentford, players that perhaps were happy to let go um because they think they can do a job for them. So i hope he I hope it works out really well for him. I hope he's a regular there and I hope he does get into Europe and I hope he is appreciated by their fans and is, um you know, valuable to them moving forward, I think. We see it going the other way sometimes. um A lot of players from top teams in the likes of Germany join mid-table Premier League teams. um So I don't see there's any reason why Mazzrocev can't do a job out there. they They obviously think of him highly. I think 5.5 million for him is perhaps a little bit on the low side.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think any Premier League player to get them for 5.5 million when they're only in their 20s I think is maybe a little bit on the low side, but I do wish him all the best and for sure he'll be welcome back anytime. So that will do then for today's podcast. By the time you guys listen to this, it may be that Mazz Rossoff departure is um confirmed.
00:15:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Hopefully it'll be the case that Michael Coyote is available to face Tottenham next weekend and we could see him come straight into the squad. um to potentially replace Maz Rossev, I think the other option perhaps, Christopher Iyer, um coming into the squad to replace Rossev in the starting lineup. But that will do for today. Thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford Podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's episode and once again, we'd be extremely grateful for your support as a list will enable us to go bigger and better moving forwards.
