Preview of Brentford vs Leicester

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford podcast with myself Daniel where today we'll be looking ahead to another away trip as Brentford face Leicester at the King Power on Friday night.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just before we get going guys we're a brand new company so we're looking for your support this season and beyond as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network whether this is a five-star review on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends we are very grateful for any support that we receive so let's get straight into it the bees look to continue their impressive run on the road in what has been a complete turn up for the books between our home and away form in recent games i'm feeling good to get ahead of this one i think
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've always got to be cautious that every Premier League game is a challenge.

Leicester's Relegation Battle

00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Leicester will be fighting for their lives um in the position they're in the table. And unlike Southampton, I think they still do have a realistic mathematical chance of staying up.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Although I do think it will be very difficult for them. i think in terms of changes, we'd like to see Ethan Pinnock in place for Sepp Bandenberg.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
in what is likely to be a forced change. Thomas Frank, at the time of recording, has yet to do his press conference. So the extent of Vandenberg's injury is not known, but the way he went down, the time he was down four, the fact that he couldn't walk around the pitch at the London Stadium and he had to be picked up in what looked like a golf type buggy and driven around the pitch.

Team Changes Due to Injuries

00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Luckily at West Ham, they have lots of room around the side of their pitch, um given where the running track normally is. So um it didn't look it didn't look like a good one um for Vandenberg.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're likely to see Ethan Pinnock come back in for this one, which I'm quite comfortable with. um As I said in the episode the other day, I think he should be able to fit in seamlessly.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Our performance at West Ham did not falter in the time Pinnock was on the pitch, and that was a time in which we were defending a 1-0 lead. So I think defensively, Pinnock, I trust him. He's not perhaps as good at playing out from the back as Vandenberg or certainly Nathan Collins.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I like that dynamic with having a left-footed centre-back and a right-footed centre-back. And obviously, Pinnock is that left-footed centre-back. it was only last season he was our player of the season so the fact that he can come straight back in I don't think it is too much of a problem whereas if we we're relying perhaps on someone like Ben Mee coming to the end of his career now very much slowing down perhaps I would be a little bit more worried but um up against Jamie Vardy. I think Jamie Vardy did tie him in knots a little bit for the Leicester's goal in the home game earlier this season, but Pinnock, I'm sure, will be looking to get on top of him in this game and alongside Nathan Collins.

Midfield Formations and Player Roles

00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do trust him in that in that area of the pitch.
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is this game for Matthias Jensen? I would ordinarily say yes. I think we should set up here very similarly to how we set up against Southampton. I think we should be looking to take advantage.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think we should look at be looking to dominate the ball, um dominate the play, get forward as much as possible. But having seen the first half performance in particular against West Ham, maybe Vitaliyan has done enough to stay in the side. I think we don't always see it from him, but I mean, particularly... um leading up to one of the offside goals when he showed quick feet, played a nice one to Evaya, received it back, had the awareness to slide it across to Wistler to finish.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought that was brilliant. And he's shown flashes that this season. I remember that the goal against Bournemouth where he was involved and it was an absolutely great through ball into Wistler's pass to score that day. So I think Janelle could well stay in the side. i think there's also a shout to have Jensen in there.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um for his creativity and his balls from deeper, which I don't think Janel can do. But if we are willing to, if we are able to be on the front foot, if Janel and Norgard are able to play forwards and are able to be as direct as they were against West Ham, bearing in mind Leicester may set up more compact than perhaps West Ham.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
but um But if we can do that, I don't see why Vitaly and El shouldn't stay in the team. But like I said, I think if Leicester are going to be a bit more compact, maybe this is one To bring Jensen into the side, have Norgaard as the only number six, and that may result in having a bit more creativity.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael Coyote is an interesting one. Whenever we want to see him start, I want to point out there were minutes, 90 minutes in fact, for both him and Fabio Calvario for the B team earlier this week.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Coyote, I yeah saw the reporters on the game saying that Coyote had to be and monitored quite closely during the game.

Leicester's Squad Analysis

00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was constantly getting instructions on on his positioning and that's kind of what I've been pointing out in recent episodes, that he just needs to get that right, the off the ball stuff right, the defensive stuff right, and then I'm sure we'll see him flourish going forwards. But, you know, is it this type of game where we can see him start a game where we are looking to be on the front foot where we want some more attacking impetus, perhaps down that side. And I think Michael Coyote would offer that over Christopher Ayer, but would maybe be surprised given how early on he is in his Brentford career and his age and the fact that he is maybe having slight issues adopting the positioning of the team and knowing where to be at exactly which time.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe Christopher Ayer will start this one and then maybe if Leicester go ahead, Maybe then there is more chance of us seeing Michael Coyote start.

Brentford's Game Strategy & Possession Play

00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
As I said, there was also minutes for Carvalho for the B team. And I was quite taken aback actually earlier this week on what some of the reports are saying about him during the game. um that that There were shouts of him looking disinterested.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think he was playing out of position on the right-hand side, so maybe he wasn't able to get involved into the game as much as he wanted to um Just after I saw um the reporter suggesting that he might be disinterested on the pitch, he scored a goal. So, you know, he's he's got quality.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen that from him. he probably is very frustrated. He probably did not foresee not playing as much as he hasn't done this season. I certainly don't think he would have necessarily moved from Liverpool um if he knew this was the game time he would get, but it's difficult, difficult being by Mikael Adamsgaard in the pecking order, given that he's been our best player this season. and And I'm not sure, you know, we we saw the extent of how good he has been coming um necessarily this season based on the evidence of the last couple of years. Although I know Thomas Frank has always believed in him. I think Carvalho's got to be ready. He's got to be ready to make an impact when he when he can come on. And again,
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we're losing here, I expect to see him hopefully earlier on than we did against Spurs. Just looking ahead at Leicester a little bit, Jamie Vardy is still the main man these days.
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like the look of Mads Hermanson in goal, who is back for them recently. I think he could be someone who could win them points for the remainder of the season and you know someone who will have to do well to beat on Friday night.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the likes of James Justin and Wilford Ndidi, I mean, that there's plenty of Premier League experience in that Leicester squad. They've got some exciting wingers, the likes of Mavadidi, if he comes on, likes of Buonanotte, who has been a bit out of favour under Ru Van Isteroy, but I thought he was really, really impressive earlier in the season, and of course was involved as well in Leicester's goal against us earlier this season. I think he scored it from Jamie Vardy's square pass. So that there there are dangers, as there would be of any Premier League side, but this Leicester side compared to the Leicester side of a few years ago, clearly not the same quality and their league position perhaps reflects that.
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the break then, I'll be looking at our previous meetings versus Leicester, how they're faring in general this season and I'll look ahead and try and make a prediction as to how it will pan out on this occasion.

Historical Encounters & Key Players

00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast looking ahead to our visit to the King Power Stadium on Friday night as we take on Leicester City in the Premier League. Of course looking back at our previous meetings in the Premier League against Leicester there were no wins in the first four Premier League meetings prior to Leicester's relegation until the 4-1 victory at the GTEC this season which featured Kevin Sharder's hat-trick and his best game of the season so far.
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
The best memory I have perhaps from the King Power was the Joshua Silva leveller on the opening day a few seasons ago. how I miss him. fact, he's still a Brentford player. We often forget, um but hopefully he's doing all well and we can see him perhaps back in preseason, perhaps moving on to something new um to try and get his career back on track. But I mean, that day he scored the goal we all know him for.
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
cutting in from the right-hand side and curling it into the corner to earn a point on the opening day. Brentford, of course, still unbeaten on the opening day of Premier League football in our four Premier League seasons so far.
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't have the best record against Leicester then, um judging by that, but it is a different Leicester now compared to the early Premier League days as we saw earlier this season at the GTEC.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't fancy them. at all right now under Ruvan Isteroy, if I'm honest. I thought they were better under Steve Cooper. They've had one win and nine defeats in the last 10 games. I didn't realise it was quite as bad as that.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although you could argue they look better against Manchester United in the FA Cup, a game that they were unlucky not to take too extra time and it was an offside goal without the use of VAR from Harry Maguire that saw United through.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And again, against Arsenal at the weekend, they held them out for a long period, albeit Arsenal had issues of their own going forwards in terms of striker availability. But they got a good amount of time through that game, keeping the scores level. They showed that they could be compact.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and They didn't create an awful lot, but they were in the game. And I think against a team like Arsenal, that is what you can expect from them. um Given the position they're in, that's probably the most you can expect from them. So,
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
They are only two points on safety um at the time of recording and at the time of the game. But relegation now looks set to be down to two from Leicester, Wolves and Itzwich, assuming Southampton already gone and the points gap between Wolves and the next team cannot be caught. So it's a crucial stage in the season for Leicester. I think Wolves, out of the three teams I just mentioned earlier,
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
They look OK. They look OK under the new manager. they're They're partway through that run they had early in the season at the moment where they've got a lot of the best teams in a row in terms of their fixtures.
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Their fixtures will get easy towards easier towards the end of the season. Of course, they'll be feeling the pressure of being so close to the bottom three. But I mean, we've seen from it this season, not beating Southampton at home.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
They look promising at times. It reminds me a bit of Luton last season where they have flashes of quality, the likes of Delap up front, um but they're not quite able to get it over the line often enough and i think that will cost them this season.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Leicester, as I've mentioned, that they they don't convince me. I think they were better under Steve Cooper. I'm not sure Ruud van Nistrooy necessarily has the managerial experience, certainly of a relegation battle.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And they do look like aside just lacking that real quality. I think when when a 37, 38-year-old Jamie Vardy is still one of their key performers and someone they rely on, I think it shows it's

Brentford's Strategy to Exploit Leicester's Struggles

00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
a sign of a team who's struggling and a team who haven't really invested properly since their success all those years ago.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Should, therefore, Brentford be looking to go about this in a similar way to Southampton away? i think so. I do think so. The initiative is with Brentford to take control. It's probably one of the few away games that we go in as a favourites.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I expect us to dominate the ball. I expect us to get forward of regularity. We still have to be strong defensively. Expect Leicester to create two or three chances. They will be fighting for their lives. They are fighting for their lives at this stage. with There's a real sense...
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
especially at the top of the league of Liverpool that we're heading into the running now and the running now and the same applies for Leicester. So they will be fighting for their lives. I think there's a tendency at times for mid table size in the Premier League to not finish a season too strongly.
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford have not really followed that trend in the last few years. We do tend to finish strongly, but We need to fight for every ball. We can't think that, that you know, the season's over, there's nothing to play for. I'm sure they're not thinking that. There is still an outside chance of getting into that top eight and and the European places.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in order to do that, we need to be winning games like this. We need to be on top. We need to show... Some consistency in our performances, as we've discussed greatly in the last few weeks. We've not won back-to-back games this season yet.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this is our prime opportunity to do so in the Premier League. So can Brentford make more history of a fourth away win in a row? I think so. I think if you're looking at the last couple on paper, Palace and West Ham, I think I went into those thinking they were more challenging games.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could have gone either way, but, you know, difficult to win. And we've come through those tests. So I think if we perform at the levels we know we can, then i can see us being successful here. But we've got to be careful. We've been um tripped up by these types of games in the past. You haven't united away.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we lost 1-0 last season, comes to mind. We've got to be clinical going forwards, I think, against Tottenham and against West Ham. You could perhaps argue that we haven't taken our chances as regularly as we should have.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is something we're really good at early in the season. so So we need to put that right. We need to go on a run, as I've been saying, and there's still a five-point gap to Fulham, who currently hold eighth position, which is for the Conference League, assuming there are five Champions League players this season and no one else outside the top eight wins a cup competition. So...
00:16:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
More history is on the line. i think we can do it. I think we need to do it. We need to go on a run. We need to go on a two three game winning run just to start plugging that five point gap. And I think if we do get the win, we'll be in a good place going into a tough encounter um on Wednesday evening against Everton.
00:16:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
under a resurgent david moise who has got them playing some good stuff so it'll be difficult game going into but it will give us confidence if we can go into that home game trying to fix our home form um on the back of four away wins in a row and back-to-back wins for the first time this season so prediction time i've got side with brentman for this one i know at our best we should be winning this game and it's whether we play to our best, whether Leicester can play above their levels or not. But I think the likelihood is, hopefully, that we will see another three points on the road. I am hopeful for this one. Leicester haven't done too much to impress me in recent weeks. And their record, perhaps a bit worse than I thought it would be. mean, it includes a 4-0 defeat to Everton in that time. They've not really managed to scrape out points at such a crucial stage of the season so

Match Prediction and Key Tactics

00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
far. So,
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's hope that does not change for this weekend. In terms of my prediction, I'm going to go 3-0. I'm going to go Brentford. I think if we get an early goal, heads could go down for Leicester. um We could stay on top and we could have a bit of fun with it. i Not quite the same as Southampton. I think they are a better team than Southampton.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there's no reason we can't go there and put on a show. We won 4-1 at the GTEC. And I remember their goal came very much against a runner play. there's no reason we can't maybe do something similar here. So I'm going to go 3-0 and I'm going to go a goal for Brian Mbumo.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i think he perhaps should have put away one at least against West Ham. I'm going to go for a goal again for Jan Wisser. um who was a bit unlucky to have the two offside goals again against West Ham.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And do I go Kevin Sharder again? I'm conscious the last two weeks I have predicted the front three all to score. So I'll go with something a bit different this time. Well, I do think Sharder has a very, very good chance. I'll go with a goal for Mikhail Damskar because i think he deserves it. And I think that's what he needs to add to his game.
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
in order to improve. So that, that will do for today. i'd like to see Brentford do better at set pieces as well. Going forwards. I think this is a game we might see ourselves getting a lot of corners and free kicks.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it, you know, I'd like to see us be more aggressive in those situations. um put ourselves about to try and score that way. Cause, they They used to be a really big part of our game going forward.

Closing Remarks & Listener Engagement

00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think perhaps this season they've been lacking a little bit, although we have defended them, as I've discussed recently as well, very, very well recently. But that will do for today. Thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's episode. And once again, we would be extremely grateful for your support as this will enable us to go bigger and better moving forwards.
