This is your Match Review Monday, where we analyse back-to-back wins for the first time this season and four top flight away wins in a row for the first time in our history!  We discuss how the front four blew Leicester apart, giving minutes to younger players and look at just how much we can read into all this in terms of European aspirations given our record against the bottom sides in the league.

Brentford's Historic Away Wins

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we'll be looking back over back-to-back wins for the first time this season and four away wins in a row for the first time ever in the top flight as the Bees swept aside Leicester on Friday night.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company, so we're looking for your support this season and beyond as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network. Whether this is a five-star review on your favourite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends, we are very grateful for any support that we receive. So let's get straight into it then. Another brilliant win on the road for Brentford.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Continuing that consistency that we've shown this season against the sides towards the bottom of the league. The only change in terms of line-up was Ethan Pinnock, Infoset, Vandenberg as expected prior to the game. We knew Vandenberg obviously came off injured against West Ham and it's looking likely he'll miss the game on Wednesday as well but maybe back shortly after that given that there is a gap between our fixtures after the Everton game.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Pinnock sorted in well. Um, all I would say is that at times Vardy threatened to get the better of him. Um, but he ultimately was part of a team that kept a clean sheet.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought the Vardy, the chances that Vardy did have, um, were mostly from tight angles, um, difficult for him to get a shot away and pass Mark Flecken and Mark Flecken did what he needed to do. And Pinnock did just enough, um,
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
to keep him out, which I'm sure he's pleased about given him the first game between Brentford and Leicester where it seemed like for Leicester's goal on that afternoon as well Vardy got the better of him. ah player that was out that we weren't necessarily expecting to see was Matthias Jensen. He was out with a minor injury.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suspect it will be the same for him with the Everton game likely coming too soon, but hopefully back following this. He's had a bit of a disrupted season this year has Jensen, I think, at his best He can be a credit to the side and he can perhaps take that third midfield position. If we're talking about favorite midfield freeze alongside Norgaard and Damsgaard, I think he struggled a little bit.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously he's out of the team a lot more because of Damsgaard. He can't really play in that more advanced role. ah But with Janelle in form right now, um you didn't notice a difference on the pitch and Damsgaard I think, you know, perhaps as as we spoke about in in the preview as well, probably warranted his starting place anyway.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was good to see in the second half, given the comfortable nature of the scoreline, was more minutes from the likes of Carvalho, Maghoma, Yarmolia, Coyote, and even Konak, who got on the field, which is really, really good to see.
00:02:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
we will go on to talk to about Carvalho later on and his goal, and hopefully the impact that will have on him. But it was really good to see those five on the pitch at the same time and and it not taking anything out of our stride. went on to score another goal with those with those players on the pitch and we didn't look out of place. We didn't look like we were dominating the game any less. We didn't look any less comfortable, albeit Leicester's heads were down at the time.

Midfield Strength and Young Talent

00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and maybe they felt defeated at the time that the those players came on, but it is really good to see them all on the pitch together. We had a very young side out, um, towards the end of this game. So it was really good to see Christian Norgard was taken off at halftime. I'm hoping this is only a precaution. He did take a knock late in the first half to the head. Um,
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Normally with those types of things, maybe he was, he just has a, has a, has a small case of concussion um or they just didn't want to take a risk with him in the second half. um If it was concussion, I'd be, I'd be, I'd be surprised because he didn't come off immediately.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And that's normally the protocol, but um in terms of,
00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
not wanting to take a risk at halftime with another game coming up on Wednesday. i can completely understand why Thomas Frank took that decision. Yamo is quite an experienced player now compared to the others that came off the bench.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can do a job in the midfield. He's done it before and and he did so here again. So with the game coming so soon, I hope it is just a precaution. The Norgaard was taken off at half time.

Leicester's Defensive Struggles

00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Looking at Leicester, Koulibaly came in at right back for his first start, having signed for Leicester in January. I thought he looked good going forwards. I thought...
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
he reminded me a little bit of ah Michael Coyote in some ways in that he did look defensively vulnerable. I thought Sharder on that left-hand side particularly had a lot of joy.
00:04:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although he didn't get on the score sheet, I thought, you know, he looked confident getting at Koulibaly. And a lot of our chances came from that area of the pitch. And I think sometimes he was caught out position. He did look lively going forwards and he was later taken off at halftime. So,
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Van Nistelrooy saw, that that was perhaps a weak point in their defense, but talking of weak points, I thought, wow, fast and a Coley as well, who started the game at center back really, really struggled. Um, I can see after seeing this game, how, how Leicester are down where they are. And I'm not sure I've seen a worse center back pairing performance, um, this season against Brentford. Certainly. Um,
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that that was a real concern to me in the first half, as good as our top, our front four is. And I think at times against certain teams, we look like a top six team um in in regards to the front four.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
They all offer something completely different. And I'm clearly including, including Gamsgaard in that. um But they all offer something so different. They're dynamic. They're quick. They're so, so difficult to deal with. Shard has got strength in the air as well. It's,
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
incredibly difficult to come up against but thought wow Fass and Acoli really really struggled especially in that first half going forwards Jamie Vardy was a bright spark as ever which says a lot about Leicester's recruitment in recent years and ultimately I'm baffled as to why the likes of Buonanotte doesn't get more minutes I thought he was their best player along with Jamie Vardy, the first time he played them, he got the goal the first time he played them.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was very much a key player in Steve Cooper's version of Leicester, but ever since Van Nistrooy's taken over, for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to fancy Bonanotte, but when he when he does play and when he came on here again, he looked like the bright spark. He looked like the one that wanted to get something going for them. So that's very strange. And if I was a Leicester fan, I'd be really wondering why that is the case. But yeah.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
comfortable in the end for Brentford, Leicester, certain players, the likes of Bobby Dick and Overeem, I thought looked really bereft of confidence from the start. And perhaps that was always going to be the case, given their position where they're in after Brentford get the first goal.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perhaps their heads are naturally going to go down slightly. But um that will do for the team news. After the break, we will be going through the game itself, talking about the chances at both ends and how Brentford ultimately came out 4-0 winners.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel. Let's get into the game itself then. I thought it was a really interesting start to the game, actually. I thought Leicester looked to get out early on the front foot early. I know prior to the game, the talk was that they hadn't scored a goal at home in their last five league games.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And at the beginning of the game, you could see that they were trying to change that. They had a bit of life in them. um And it looked like it might be successful in the early stages. um As we spoke about, Koulibaly was lively going forward. He had an effort from a tight angle, which is parried away for by Mark Flecken.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we had that chance on the transition where Vardy broke forwards, turned Pinnock inside out, if I'm honest, nutmegged him twice and went close. But again, the angle was quite tight. And I think if we are going to praise Pinnock, he got him into an area.
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um where it less likely he'd score and where it'd be more likely that Mark Flecken can keep it out. Having said that, at the other end, our front four looked very dangerous every time we got forward and it it was just amazing to see.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
that That dynamism of that front four is not something we really ever achieved when not when Ivan Tony was up front and I think it's just because he's a very different striker but I think And Boomer, Whistle and Shard are complimenting each other so well.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Dam's guarding behind ties it all together, I think, in the interview after the game. And Boomer and Whistle are saying the same thing. And it's really amazing to see, especially against these sides who, you know, we may have more technical quality than, we're able to get forward more often against, and we look so difficult to defend against. And I think that that that there's no... re there's no um There's no shock that we've managed to score four goals at home and away against Leicester this season. There's no shock that we managed to score five at Southampton a few weeks ago and because that front four can cause problems for any side when they're on it. And they were on it on Friday night.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
and There was the early chance when Sharder went close from Ayers Cross. He was afforded time in the box to bring down the cross, which is quite rare. Leicester defenders not getting close enough to the play, although they did manage to block Sharder's volleyed effort.
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Soon after came the goal, death through ball through the eye of the needle from Dam's guard. What an assist that is. That is the sort of assist you do see from, you know, the top attacking creative players um in the world. Just seeing a pass that...
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
other players simply wouldn't see, um, that there wasn't much of a gap for that ball to go through. And although it was probably intended for Sharder, who he received the ball from, Wister was also there perfectly timed. Brentford, again, getting to the ball first in these situations.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you expect Wister to score from those situations, which he did. But then I think the the credit to that one is all on Mikael, Dam's guard assists. And then I thought Leicester's heads went down from there. Um,
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
which which can be expected, i guess, the position they're in, the recent home form they've been in. It's been a terrible run, and I still stand by what I said in the preview about arguably them getting worse under Ruud Vanne story um compared to Steve Cooper.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was another dams guard assist that led to Brian's goal, a much simpler assist for Mikael dams guard this time, who rolled it across to Brian, who cut in from the right and cut it into the far corner.
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was especially pleased to see this. I've been calling in recent weeks for Brian and Boomer to perhaps vary his finishes a bit more. He's been going for that near post effort quite a lot recently, which I appreciate can work.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I appreciate, you know, if you do a bit of both, then the opposition's keeper doesn't know where you're ultimately planning to go. um Leicester showed him onto that side. Leicester showed him the far post, which I think is a very unwise thing to do. Anyone that's seen Brian and Boomer in the past and what he wants to do is's exactly that.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
They should have been trying to show him down the line there, but It was a brilliant curling finish into the far corner. Almost Josh De Silva-esque, but I guess Brian's scored his fair share of those types of goals too. So it was really, really good to see Lovely bit of quality from Brian and Bumo.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Clinical, and this is what was missing last week against West Ham in that first half, where he was probably equally as dominant, but did not manage to take the chances. The third goal again, from a Leicester

Diverse Attacking Strategies

00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
point of view, if Brentford had conceded that, I would be thinking it's all too easy.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brian and Bumo, simple cross, perfectly timed. Norgard in at the near post, allowed to get in front of every Leicester defender to nod home. And that, is again, is very disappointing. Someone on that Leicester defence has to be not allowing Norgard to get in front of them.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Someone has to be close to Norgard. Following him, it was all too easy. um And another goal for Brentford, three it up. um within the half an hour mark, and at this point, the boos were really ringing around the King Power Stadium, and some of the home fans decided that they had seen enough, only after 30 minutes.
00:13:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shada went close to getting his goal again, um after the 3-0, going so close again with a free header, Leicester again, not ah not getting near to Brentford's players in the box, not picking up players, not showing the fight to get to the ball first and perhaps that's one of the reasons they brought Yannick Westergaard on at half time a very very tall defender someone that they perhaps would have hoped would get on the end of those crosses and stop that danger but Kevin Sharder again we know how dangerous he's in the air from the Crystal Palace goal going very close hitting the post possibly could have won a penalty in that first half as well I think it was
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
very tight. You could see the contact. Perhaps there wasn't enough contact for VAR to intervene when he went down. i don't think Brentford made too much of a fuss about it as well, whereas I could see other teams definitely doing that. And although we don't like to o admit it, perhaps that could and sway or persuade the referee to have a look into things more or VAR to have a look into things more.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think perhaps it was one of those ones where if if the referee gives it, it doesn't get overturned. ah But as a referee hadn't given it, perhaps there wasn't quite enough to meet the threshold to overturn it. But very, very unlucky not to get a penalty and very unlucky also with the free header rebounding off of the post.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then, just before halftime, we almost had an obligatory Wout Fass own goal, which... I mean, I don't watch Leicester every week, but I feel like we see this two or three times a season with Wout Vass almost deflecting across into his own net.
00:15:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hermann Zemmash to get a save on the initial effort and kate KLP was very, very unlucky um with the rebound deflecting off his arm. If that hit him anywhere else, that would have been 4-0 Brentford before the break and unlucky again.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kino's Potter not getting on the score sheet. does tend to sometimes get on the score sheet in these sorts of games um where we're overrunning a team. And unlucky not to add another one to his tally here.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then at halftime, it looked almost like job done. Leicester seemed to lack belief and conviction to get back into the game. Most of their efforts coming through Jamie Vardy from a tight um and unlikely angles, which Mark Flecken was happy to deal with. Buonanotte fired wide, which was the only real other chance of note for Leicester. As I said, he looked bright when he came on.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
He looked like someone who did believe that they could score, someone who wanted to make something happen. And I don't think there was enough of that from the rest of the Leicester team.

Set Piece Improvements and Defense

00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a quieter first half. However, Moli was very, very close to his first Brentford goal. He did everything right.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
From a well-worked corner, up fed back out to Brian and Bumo. Yarmolik's header forcing the best save for the game out from Manson. Manson, who I think is a very good keeper and has kept Leicester in a lot of games this season. So very ah unlike unlucky.
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I would have been very pleased to see someone like Yarmolik get his first goal for the club. Just on that, just on set pieces in general, I thought Brentford much improved um going forwards on set pieces here. um Of course, we can only play...
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
against the team that are put out in front of us and Leicester's defending was very, very poor, but not just that Yarmouliak effort from the corner. The Norgaard goal from the free kick, very, very well worked. We continue to defend corners and free kicks very well.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was even an occasion in the second half in this game where Shada was putting pressure on the opposition's keeper. ah corner. I don't think we really do enough of that this season to really get the team um ah the other team uncomfortable with our deliveries. And I thought it worked and it got under lesser skin a bit and I thought defensively they did struggle and of course a goal and Our best chance it wasn't converted of the game. Both came from um set piece delivery. So credit to Keith Andrews there for improving that area of the game, which we criticised, especially after that Spurs home defeat, where we had seemed to have so many corners, so many free kicks, but nothing came of any of them.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
With the game petering out towards the end and a more youthful side on the pitch, Brian Abumo got in behind late on and his initial effort was saved by Hermanson only for Fabio Carvalho to fire home the rebound and get his goal. um it It wasn't the best goal. I mean, he had bodies to beat, so he had to be precise with his finish. It took a slight defection. Again, from a lesser point of view, they should have got the ball away. Mads Hermanson was fuming um ultimately ah after the...
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Initial save and when when the ball went in, the ball actually comes off a Leicester player before rebounding back to Carvalho. They've got to be stronger. They've got to be better. They've got to get out to Carvalho more. But got to give him credit.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um There are lots of bodies in and around the goal. He managed to navigate the ball around those and get his goal, which I really, really hope is a confidence booster for him. I think you can't under understate the influence ah of something like that.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um when he's been struggling, when perhaps he hasn't been getting the minutes he wants, you know, to get that goal. um And he scored a couple this season. Perhaps this wasn't his most important one, but to get that goal, the icing on top of the cake.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And for him to just feel that bit of love from the away fans that are in attendance, because what i would say is there's plenty of evidence in this Brentford team of new signings, not necessarily working out first, likes of Keynos Potter, the likes of Mikar Damsgaard, arguably.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and and look at where they are now. So I very much hope we'll be saying the same thing about Fabio Carvalho in a year or two time. He's just got to remain patient, I think. He's just got take his opportunity when they come and getting a goal like this, no matter what game is, only goes to show that he's doing that at the moment.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lots of Leicester bodies on the line, though, as I said, they should perhaps have got it clear. and They'll be very, very disappointed with this one. um And that was the game, really. It was it was a very quiet second half.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford had done the job. We started taking players off um with the next game, of course, coming, you know, less than a week after that one. um So I'm hoping that will help us be fresh for this Everton game coming up in midweek. I think what you've got to say about Brentford this season is we dealt with the test against lower teams in the table very, very

Aiming for European Competition

00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
well. We've blown them away at times. um I'm thinking both games against Leicester. I'm thinking arguably both games against Southampton. although The first one was only 3-1.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um even Even the Ipswich game, we scored a lot of goals. um the The issue was just conceding. We scored a lot of goals against Wolves. So we can do it. And, you know, we've shown ourselves to be a team of higher quality than those sides. And I think the challenge now...
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
is to start getting more points in these tougher games, these tighter games, um where game management is more important, where defensive solidity is more important. um But what this win does do is put Brentford five points off eighth place, which is a conference league place, and we have a game in hand.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
on Aston Villa who currently occupy that place and we are seven points off only seven points off of about 14 games left a probable Champions League place assuming fifth this season gets Champions League which is looking very very likely so the three wins in four that we've achieved recently has given us a chance it's the same we couldn't have made it for because I thought Tottenham were there for the taking in the game we lost but it's given us a chance, a very much outside chance. I'm not for one second suggestion. We'll get champions league this season, but I just want to portray how close it is between us and those teams above us. So but plenty to play for. We've we've got to go into that mindset that we have plenty of play for that. You know, if we, if we can get a win on Wednesday and we can back that up again with another win at home again, against Aston Villa, um,
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and turn three wins into four um into five from six and i think we'll be right in that conversation and this is our chance we we've got very little to lose i think but a lot to gain so if we can do this if we can get teams wins against teams in and around us um rather than just those bottom sides who we're dealing with quite convincingly at the moment then there's every chance that we could achieve something special this season so With gaps between the games, the fact we're out the Cups is annoying as I have found out this season. You know, we've got to take advantage of that now. We've got to take advantage of the extra rest, um which we'll have again after the Everton game.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Players are coming back from injury. um Hopefully we can have something exciting to look forward to in the last five or 10 games this season. But that will do for today. A very comfortable win on the road.
00:23:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll have to wait a long time now to see whether we can make it five away wins on the road with the next couple being at the GTX. So let's look now to fix our home record. But thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford podcast.
