Team News and FA Cup Impact
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's get straight into the team news for this one. As I said, it seems like we've had a long time away seeing um ah the other teams in FA Cup action this weekend, Brentford and also West Ham were not part of that. So both sides should be fully refreshed for the encounter at the London Stadium.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we cast our minds back to the Spurs game two weeks ago, what's the disappointing afternoon for Brentford?
Goalkeeper Dilemma: Mark Fleck's Return
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had Hakon vowed in Marston in goal. There is every chance I believe that Mark Flecker will return for this one. And I think this will be a very important boost to the side. I think like I've said in the past, I'm i'm not sure. I'm just not sure how good vowed in Marston is and whether he's ready at this early stage in his career, given that he's a goalkeeper and he's quite young.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, to be a regular Premier League player. And I think, I think we saw that in moments against Tottenham, particularly that he's not used to playing and behind that the defense that he was behind. Um, the confusion at the corner, um, for, you know, it's own goal. I thought he could have done better perhaps with the second one as well. So I think having Mark Fleck back here and fingers crossed that he will be returning will be an important boost to decide as, as much as he has received some criticism in the past.
Right Back Controversy: Iyer vs. Coyote
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think he's definitely stepped up now for the last year, pretty much. It was around this time last year where his performance has taken an upturn. I think he's really good with the ball at his feet. And I and i think he is a solid keeper at this level. He's not, he's not David Rayer, but he is a solid replacement. I guess I think we have to be realistic and acknowledge that um Whoever was going to come into replace David Ray just wasn't going to be quite on his level which is understandable given what Ray has gone on to do at Arsenal. Another selection dilemma that Thomas Frank is likely to be faced with is whether Christopher Iyer continues it right back. I thought he looked a little bit rusty, a little bit out of out of sharpness.
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um against Tottenham I thought he didn't bomb up and down that right hand side like we know he can he didn't have any of those driving runs that we know he can make and that we saw him make earlier in the season could we therefore see Michael Coyote come into the starting lineup he would have now had two four weeks with a side training and when you're a new new signing to a club I think that is invaluable I think in terms of going forwards, in terms of the long throws, in terms of overlapping Brian and Boomer on that right hand side and getting cross into the box. What we saw in his 10 minute cameo against Tottenham was um extremely positive. I think he can tidy up on his positioning and his tactical aspects of the game. But I think that is something that perhaps having two weeks in training has helped and assisted him with.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought he looked maybe a little excited when he came on against Spurs and that left him slightly out position for Spurs second goal. But I would like, I think, to see him start
Center Back Preferences: Vandenberg & Collins
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
here. He is an out and out, right back, unlike Christopher. And I think Michael Coyote is probably what we're looking towards in the future in that position. So I would like him to start here. um I think going forwards, that there's a lot that he can do. And if if he just tidies up,
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
his positioning, his tactical awareness, his defensive ability. Then I think we have a player on our hands here and I'd love to see him get a start on this occasion. The last game also saw the return of Ethan Pinnock onto the bread bench. I discussed in the preview episode for Spurs that I would like to see Vandenberg and Collins continue at center back, given the partnership they built up.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And given again, that is probably what we're looking towards, you know, towards next season and and beyond that now, um given that we don't have too much necessarily to play for this season, apart from a possible outside shot of the European places. But to do that, we've got to go on a ride and we've got to start that now. um I do think Vandenberg and Collins have got something there. I think they look good together in in that area of the pitch. And I don't really see a need why we should break that partnership up um for the returning Ethan Pinnock, who is maybe it's slightly the wrong side of his career. We've seen
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
from him this season, a slight decline in performances. I think that's fair to say. um Certainly Collins outperformed him um when when they played together. So I i think having Ethan Pinnock on the bench is also a fantastic option because he's he's still a good center back. And, you know, if if someone like Vandenberg was to come off injured or or if um we were to need to go to a back five for whatever reason, or if we wanted to bring on an extra center back late on to tie up the game, then I think Ethan Pinnock would be perfect for that role.
Midfield Strengths and Choices
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then we go on to the midfield. Now, I think, as I say, most episodes, I think Norgard and Damsgard are nailed down ah to be two at the midfield three. And generally Thomas Frank chooses between Jenson and Janelle for that third spot. I understand when Janelle's in the team, when it is maybe against the top side, the top six side, when when we feel like we could get over running midfield.
00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
when we feel like we need a bit more defensive solidity. And maybe if someone like Coyote used to start a right back, Thomas Frank may go with someone like, you know, in midfield. But I would like to see Jensen start. I think, I think he is that deep lion playmaker. He can play similar balls to those of Dam's guard from a deeper area. He can do those long sweeping diagonals, which I don't think anyone else in the Brentford side can do. And I think in terms of going forward and creating chances, him and Dam's guard together.
00:06:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
are absolutely crucial to that. And I think Norguard is also solid in that position. and I think he can do that number six role largely on his own. I think Jensen's also experienced enough to, you know, get his positioning right and and do a job defensively as well alongside The other option is to play both Jensen and, you know, and that will likely see Kevin Scharder drop to the bench.
Strategizing Forward Lineup Against West Ham
00:07:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I understand this in games where we're playing a top side, where we expect them to maybe dominate possession, dominate the midfield.
00:07:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and perhaps a Graham Potter taking over at West Ham. I expect him to play more of a possession style. Perhaps it is a good game to play both Jenssen and Janelle in. I think when it comes to Shada, it could go one of two ways. I think if if we started Kevin Shada here, he could put in a really, really good performance. He's got it in him. We saw him score that hat trick against Leicester. We saw the brilliant header he scored a few weeks ago away at Palace. um But we've also seen the other side of him where he's inconsistent he doesn't always take on his man when he's got all the pace in in the world to do so i think we saw a bit of that a couple of weeks ago against spurs i think sometimes he looks down on confidence even though you know i think he's done okay this season i don't think he has any reason to necessarily be down on confidence but i think with kevin sharda inconsistency is still the word i look at and
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it a risk if we start him, you know, is it is a positive step? If we start him, I think it's, um, if Thomas Frank was to go with coyote right back into near midfield and keep the front three with Kevin Shada in it, I would be excited by that lineup. I think it's forward thinking and I think, you know, it's a, it's a sign that we are looking to take the game to West Ham. However, I would not be surprised if we go to the extra midfielder, given that West Ham are likely to try and play a possession based game.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then we can maybe see it to can take control of that midfield battle um in that way with Jens and Janelle Norgad and Damsgard all in the middle midfield area and of course Damsgard in almost a free roll drifting from the left to the centre area and KLP bombing down on the overlap on that left hand side. I also want to talk a little bit about Fabio Carvalho and the dilemma around him of course Yoni came on with about five minutes left against Spurs in a game where we were behind, in a game where we were struggling to create chances, and in a game where we were running out of ideas, ultimately. And I think if Carvalho is not going to come up on earlier in those circumstances, it does concern me moving forward about the opportunities he's going to get and um you know whether he's able to reach his potential.
Fabio Carvalho's Challenges and Potential
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Obviously, I know it's early in his Brentford career.
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen plenty of examples, the likes of Damsguard, the likes of King Louis Potter maybe started slowly and are now regulars in the side. And I just really, really want to see this one for Carvalho because I do think there's a player there. But at the same time, when I see him play, I think he gets shrugged off the ball at times a bit too easily. He doesn't quite have that synergy with maybe the rest of the forward line, the likes of Michael Damsguard does.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I will say about him is one of Brentford's best performances this season was the Newcastle game at home, winning which Brentford won 4-2. On that day, Michael Damaskar was actually on the bench and the likes of Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago both started. So it's a sign that Carvalho can start Premier League games. He can make an impact. I thought he was good on that day, as were the rest of the side, and I think You know, I would like to see, I think Kavaleo get an opportunity from the start at some point in the season. Although I think it is difficult given that I think damn Scott's our best player this season. I don't think anyone can argue that. I see he's won the, um, fans player of the month, three months running now. Um, I think four times running now actually, but.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would like to see Carvalio be given opportunities here and there, especially if this season, um, you know, with five, 10 games to go, it looks like it's petering out and we have very little to play for. That is all I really want to talk about in the team news for this game. Although there are a few updates on injury players on injured players.
Injury Updates: Hickey and Henry
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry. I think Aaron Hickey is reported to be back in full training around now. It was reported in early February that this would be the case.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I expect Brentford to take this very slowly. I think there was rumours, if you think of when Rico Henry came back, there was rumours for a couple of months that Rico was in training and that he was you know playing the odds behind closed doors game and I expect it fully to be the same for Aaron Hickey. So I would be surprised, in all honesty, if we saw him maybe before April, but it would be good to see him before the end of the season. Rico Henry himself, I still think, is probably unlikely to be ready for this one than even if he is.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's very likely to take his place on the bench, but again, I'd like to see him work towards getting a start towards the end of the season, getting a bit of regular game time in and hopefully getting back to his best self for next season. I think with both Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey, I think it's about getting them ready for next season, ensuring they have a proper pre-season under their belts and they can get back to their potential um and really play a strong role for us next season.
Eagle Tiago's Return: Pros and Cons
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another rumor is that Eagle Tiago is getting nearer to return.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
This has been a frustrating one because he's at a club record signing. He's looked good when he's played, although we don't really know in terms of goals and assists what his numbers might be. I think, you know, we we don't really know how how many, how clinical he's going to be in front of the goal, but in terms of his physicality, his size.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
his ability to go into jewels with defenders and his ability to play um the likes of Whistler and Abumo in and be the out ball is definitely there. And I would love to see him return and again, just have an injury-free conclusion to the season and and be fit and ready for next season. Because if this carries on, if he picks up another injury, then, you know, I'm looking back at the recruitment team and and the and and the deal that we made and thinking,
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, was, was this the right thing to do? Um, ah essentially getting a player who's seems to be injury prone. And I really want him to come back and prove his fitness and really have a sustained run in the side. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later in terms of West Ham, they've had some issues in the forward areas
Analyzing West Ham's Attacking Threats
00:13:13

themselves. Her of the likes of Jared Bowen and Mohammed kudos are back and available.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Evan Ferguson, the striker from Brighton, who obviously formerly worked under Graham Potter, has joined them and I think that could be a potential dangerous front three in something for Brentford to look out for with Bowen, Kudas and Ferguson all line up together. Graham Potter is obviously relatively new to his job and in the last few games they have been setting up in a back five, although that back five includes the likes of Alamere Sofal,
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, been at West Ham for a number of years in his thirties and the likes of Alphonse Arriela in goal, also in his thirties. Is that an area of the pitch where Brentford can exploit? Is that an area of the pitch where we can use our pace? Is that an area where West Ham are slightly weak in and we can maybe exploit? Although the likes of Max Kilman will still be likely lining up against next to Sufao, and I think he is a good Premier League defender.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the break then, I will be going into our previous visits to the London Stadium, our previous meetings against West Ham in general, and I'll be trying to work out how it is likely to go on this occasion.

Brentford vs. West Ham: Past Performances and Managerial Changes
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the second part of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, the London Stadium then has been a happy hunting ground for the bees over the last few years with two straight wins there before disappointing 4-2 defeat last time out in a game where Jared Bowen scored twice in the opening seven minutes. Brentford then threatened to come back. You can argue that in the remaining 83 minutes the score was too old but the damage was done early on.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even at the G-Tech, Brentford have won three times before a drab draw earlier in the season at the G-Tech after Brian and Bumo score one of our many famous skulls inside a minute before West Ham pegged us back and the game kind of peated out from there. But what we can take for that, I think, is a general strong record against West Ham. However, this is a different West Ham.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Previously they were under David Moyes, obviously the game earlier this season, they were under Lopategi, who you could kind of put in the same bracket in some ways. They're pragmatic managers, I would argue. West Ham fans, a lot of their frustration was around the style of play, um although they did have some success of it. Of course they did. They won a European trophy.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um However, I think under Graham Potter, which will come on to there'll be a bit more progressive. I would expect West Ham then are currently 15th in the Premier League. However, they are 10 points above the relegation zone and only four points behind Brentford.
Brentford's Strategy Against West Ham
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It looks like they have very little to play for this season, perhaps even more so than Brentford. I can't see them going down being 10 points to clear the relegation zone. And of course, they are also out of all cup competitions.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and also have had a two-week gap in between their last fixture and this one. This would have allowed, of course, Graham Potter to work with his side on the training ground given that his early stages in the job. I think there is a sense that they're improving since he's taken charge. I think we can expect them to deploy more possession-based games similar to Potter's Brighton side. I think it's important that we don't get outplayed in midfield and I think given that profile, given what I might expect from bright from West Ham, it might be a good idea to have an extra midfielder in those circumstances with Janelle and Jenson both in the side. I think this may give us more control in the midfield. And if we can win that battle and get forward in regularity more regularly than West Ham, then I think we can punish them. I think perhaps you know we've we've we've got to look at engaging in a good press here. I think perhaps,
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Using your style, West Tower may be more more um prone to mistakes in defensive areas, more likely to take risks in defensive areas, which we can try and capitalise on, especially as a team you know who aren't necessarily used to playing this way, and trying to adapt to Graham Potter's style. Overall, I think it's a tough one to call, actually. I can see it going either way. I think it's important to bounce back from what was a really big disappointment and a missed opportunity two weeks ago against
Brentford's Away Form and Upcoming Matches
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs. We've got two away games on the bounce now, but more recently, it seems that our home and away form have flipped. And if we were to win here, this will be our third away win in a row after not having any away wins all season up until then. I think there's always a chance. I think there's always a chance of Brentford here with with the front three that we're likely to have with dams guarding behind.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we can be solid in defence, that's a bonus. I think, you know, there are options now in defence with Ethan Pinnock, Ben Mee, Christopher Iyer, all fit and possibly all three, ah all three on the bench of Coyote starts and we stick with Vandenberg and Collins. So I think there are options there. Um, of course, one of Charda Jenson or, you know, it would be on the bench, lights of Carvalho would be on the bench. I think there are options there. And I think,
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
given the rest that we've had, there's no reason we can't come into this with confidence given our recent run on the road as well. and And we've also got to go into it with the attitude of putting the game two weeks ago behind us. Given that both sides have not played for two weeks, I think that can be a good thing. But on the flip side, I think we've got to make sure we start fast, got to make sure we say shake any rustiness. I think you can do all the training in the world, but nothing is quite like match day. So it's important.
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a season where games come thick and fast. When you have that break, it is important that you can switch on straight away and be extra sharp and be able to take advantage in the early stages because if if one side does that better than the other, this could easily determine how this game may go. In terms of my prediction, I've got to give a prediction. out I'm going to stick with something I've not done before. I'm going to stick with the same prediction as I gave for the last game against Spurs.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
My thinking prior to Spurs was that I was a bit worried, gay assuming that their ceiling is higher than our ceiling, although we were the side in better form at the time, so I backed Brentford. I think this is another tight game that could go either way. and you know I've been to the Under Stadium for the last three years. I've seen us win two of the three games, so it's a stadium that I have hope about.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, we, we've got a track record there. We've won there before many of these players have won there before. I think it could go either way, but I think if we're sharp and I think we would have trained very well in the last two weeks and I think we would have used that time as well to rest of the likes of Newell gardening out who may struggle to play three games in a week and you may struggle with fitness at times. I think they, they would have benefited from the rest. I think if we can start quickly, if we can make sure we can.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
be competitive in midfield or if if we're even if we're not able to take full control of that midfield battle. And then if we can be solid in defense with the players we've got coming back and the players we've got already be in the lineup, then I don't see why we can't hurt them. And although their front three is something I'm a bit worried about if Evan Ferguson is to start. I think maybe he won't be as sharp as he could be, having not played too much for Brighton this season. And obviously we know what Bowen and Kudos can do, but equally at the same time, I know what the likes of Wisser and Bummo, Sharda and Damsgard can do as well.
Predicting Brentford's Victory Over West Ham
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going to go 3-1 to Brentford, which is the same prediction I gave against Spurs. Hopefully I have better luck this time. My golf scorers are Wisser and Bummo and Sharda, one for each at the front. Three and
