Goalkeeper Dilemmas: Flecken vs Valdemarsson

00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Onto the game then and let's look at team news first. I think McKee thing that everyone noticed in the build up to this one was that there was no Mark Flecken in goal.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
he apparently picked up a strain in training on Friday. Hopefully we'll be back for the next game against West Ham, given that that is in two weeks' time. Thomas Frank is certainly um hopeful for that and says it's not too serious. We therefore saw Hakonvaldon Marston, who he's seen a little bit this season, but this was his first Premier League start and My comment as always about Valdemarsson is I don't really know how good he is. And I think in this one, he didn't do enough to convince me that he is maybe good enough at the moment to step up. He's he's a young player. um Perhaps he needs more first team experience elsewhere. I don't know. I think when I've seen him previously, it's been in cup games against lower league opposition where he's typically not had much to do.
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
When he played against Brighton, I thought Brighton's best bet of the game was when Fleckham was in goal and I don't think they actually threatened us too much when he was in goal. So it's an interesting one. i I think given the goals and we'll go on to talking about the goals, I think maybe he could have done better.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um maybe he showed his limitations slightly. I think it certainly highlights how much we miss Mark Flecken, I think when he's out of the team, just given his experience. And I don't think Vowden-Marson is yet on that level, although I'm not giving up hope on him. I still haven't seen him play too many times. Maybe it could have just been a slight off day but for him. But yeah, I would like to see a bit more from him um and It's difficult when you're a second choice keeper. You don't play very often. You don't expect to play very often. It's not a position in the team that you know we expect to really change very often.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But as we found out a couple of years ago, when David Ray got injured, it's really, really important to have a strong second-choice keeper. And I am not sure. I think the jury's out as to whether Valor and Marston is good enough at this moment in time. um I'm certainly not suggesting that he can't be good enough, perhaps, in the future.

Player Focus: Iyer and Coyote's Roles

00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Aside from that change, we saw Christopher Iyer come in for Mads Rossev, who has departed for Wolfsburg.
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It was good to see him back again. i ah He came off um after suffering a bit of cramps, so I think he should be okay again for two weeks time. He's one of those players that I'm always a little bit worried about in terms of injuries. He's got to prove his fitness. He's got to prove that he can stay fit as that's just so important. And he's not done that enough, unfortunately, over the years. But I thought, yeah, he was he wasn't at his best here.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think at his best, he can ball up and down that right hand side. He can be an aerial presence as well. He can help out defensively. I think he didn't know K job, but I think again, there is more to come from him. And hopefully he can be pushed um in the starting line up by the man I'm about to talk about now, Michael Coyote. He was named on the bench. I thought he looked very promising, actually. um I would maybe like to see him start um going forwards. I certainly don't doubt that he will start. We'll talk about his performance in more detail later on.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can perhaps understand why he didn't start having only been with the team for a week and I have been a more established member of the first team squad, but it's nice to finally have a little bit of competition on that side. um And I am very hopeful that he will prove to be um an upgrade on Rossleb. I think certainly with the long throws, certainly with his pace that that we saw in the five, 10 minutes that he was on the pitch.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I definitely thought that that there is potential there and you know he could grow into a really important player for us so I think he could be a very exciting signing and I do really think unless it goes terribly wrong in the second half of the season that we will take up the option to make that deal permanent and with Christopher Ayers injury record I suspect we may see him start in games sooner rather than later In terms of the rest of the team, we saw breakfast set up with the back four once again, which has been a little bit of a pattern um in recent games facing the big six, especially at home.

Tactical Adjustments Against Spurs

00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would have perhaps brought Jensen in for, you know, in this game, given that we knew about Spurs is likely availability issues. They're certainly very light on numbers at the moment. um Certainly missing a lot of key players. So I thought maybe we could have
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
played that midfield of nor guardians and dams, guarding this one, looking to be more on the front for it, looking to be more creative. And I think Jensen would have helped us from an earlier stage, try and unlock the defence and try and add that bit of creativity to the game, which I thought we needed because I think we struggled in this one, um, to, to create chances and we struggled to, you know,
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
we struggled on the hole in front of goal. And I think with Damsguard and Jenson on the pitch, you just add another dimension because Jenson will be more creative from that deeper position. Whereas, you know, is not necessarily that type of player. He's a little little little bit more competitive, little bit more defensive, defensive minded, I would say. And again, we also saw a mistake in this one from, you know, for the goal. But that that couldn't have been foreseen. We'll talk about that.
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
in part two. I thought the subs in general in this game were made too late. I think the likes of Fabio Carvalho, if he is not coming on in this one until the 84th minute, then I do worry whether Thomas Frank really has that full belief in him, given that this is a game where we needed a goal and we were struggling going forwards. I wonder whether maybe he could have come on for someone like Kevin Shada to just try and do something different earlier on in the game.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Carvalho is someone that has frustrated me this season. I think he can show a lot more than he is. But equally, I understand it's difficult when you're not getting many minutes and you're only getting five, 10 minutes even in a game like this to try and prove yourself. And, you know, it's hard. And I really, really hope for him that he comes good. And I said before as well, it doesn't help that he prefers to play in in the position that Damsguard plays in, and Damsguard this season has been outstanding. Could the likes of Yarmulik and Mokoma have been used, I think, maybe? It was a game where we struggled, particularly in the final third. Could we have made more changes to try and do something about it? I don't know. We only made the three changes in the end, and I do wonder.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether on a day where we struggled to break a team down, today where we saw many players not at their best, could we have shown more belief in some of those substitutes to try and change the game for us? Perhaps we could have, but again, it's an easy thing to say in hindsight, and both Yarmodic and Magoma are very young players, you know perhaps quite unlikely to have made the decisive difference in this one if they had been used.
00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Spurs, there was no van de Venne, despite playing 45 minutes in the Europa League game on Thursday. I'm not sure if he's injured or whether they're arresting him for their big League Cup semi-final in midweek. There was also no Romero, Vicario, Madison, Solanke, and Dragison, to name a few. um So it was very much a second string Spurs side, the breadth were up again. So we would have known about that, I think.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
The only real shock would have been the van de Venne wasn't involved um at all. So, you know, perhaps a sense of a missed opportunity here, given given the opposition we were playing and the run they were on and that we did have a lot of the territory.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But then at the same time, we struggled to make much of that and we struggled to simply, you know, get get the ball down and create the the the chances that were necessary I thought we we tried to do a lot of the same things in terms of getting lots of crosses into the box and things like that and it wasn't really working even though on paper it looked like it maybe should have against the likes of Ben Davies and Archie Grey at centre back and I have talked about Archie Grey a little bit I thought he looks really really tidy he is a very very young player and I am a little bit sad that we missed out on him in the summer I think
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
He would have been an absolutely brilliant siding for Brentford. He wouldn't he wouldn't be playing it sent about for us either, so maybe he would have found it easier. I don't know if he has any regrets about that decision, but yeah, I think that there's certainly a player there and he is definitely one for the future of one that we missed out on. But there, we we can't we can't compete with everybody I guess in relation to some of these signings but that will do then for part one. In part two we'll be talking about the game itself and how Brentford failed to get on the score sheet.

Hello and welcome to part two of your Daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel. I think to summarize this one, it was a very frustrating afternoon from

Missed Opportunities and Defensive Errors

00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
start to finish. I think with lots of possession, we had more possession than Spurs, which I think perhaps came as a surprise. Lots of shots. We had 20 of them again, more than Tottenham and only four on target, which was still more than Tottenham's score. But I think it's it's unlike Brentford in terms of shots to shots on target ratio. I think typically we wait for the optimum chance, um the optimal opportunity, and then more likely than not, the shot is then on target. And, you know, that's the reason we scored so many goals this season. That's the reason AlexG is so high compared to shot taken. And I just don't think we necessarily saw this here. I thought at times we we resorted to long shots as well, which I don't think Thomas Rant would have been.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
very pleased about because the quality of shooting um was very, very poor in that regards. um I recall Kenos Potter firing over from a long way out. I think Brian and Bumo, Kevin Shada were both guilty of it too. I thought in the first half, perhaps the two chances that maybe could have turned into something that was Wisser's headed chance.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
over the bar. I've got to admit, Pedro Pollo defended him very, very well. um And we had the Norgar volley as well, which is straight at Kinski. Either side of him, perhaps it would have gone in. I mean, I think Norgar probably did as well as he could have in that situation. I certainly don't expect him really to be picking out the top corner from there. But, you know, these are the kind of chances that we needed to take. um if we were to get ourselves ahead because it was looking like we were struggling in a little bit in proportion to the possession and the shots we were having to really carve out anything clear cut and that was compounded and made worse by the awful first goal which we conceded straight from a Tottenham corner. Now I've got to caveat this
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and say that Brentford have been very good at defending corners generally this season. And before the game, we had considered the least goals directly from corners in the Premier League. But on this occasion, what is Vitaliy Anelt doing? His he it has body position seems all wrong. He is almost back onto the ball. I mean, the ball hits his back and goes in.
00:14:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It seems like he is trying to get out of the way of it, rather than try and attack it and get the ball away. And I don't know why you do that in the position he was in. I can only think that perhaps he thought Valdemarsson was behind him and was going to clear up the ball. But um from Valdemarsson's point of view, I thought he was caught in no-masland. He was off his line. um Certainly came out to try and make an attempt to get the ball.
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he was not commanding enough at all. He was nowhere near the ball. And ultimately it was just a bit of a mess, um the entire action. I think it's very, very disappointing to concede such a goal like that. And we give Tottenham from that point, a bit of well-needed confidence and something to defend. At that point, I was still thinking Tottenham, you know, that they they've conceded a lot of points from winning positions this season, but this wasn't,
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
this wasn't the right way to go behind. you know I don't begrudge sometimes the opposition scoring a very, very good goal. It happens, but I thought this was up there with the poorest goals we can see in this season. And I think even after this corner, you saw it then the opposition players every time Tottenham got a corner, they were on top of Adam Larson trying to make it difficult for him. And I think it was definitely an area he seemed to struggle in. But yeah, as as I said, I don't think you know,
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
helped him I think you know needs to be attacking that ball getting it clear that's the most important thing and I don't know why his body position was like that and you know him trying to get out of the way as it hits his back and goes in is just a very poor look all around and I think um he'll be very disappointed with that himself as well. Moving into the second half as I said I had a little bit of confidence still at this stage thinking that Spurs drop a lot of points on winning positions, thinking that generally we're as on top in the game. And, you know, there might be more chances to come. Perhaps, you know, the likes of Whistler and Abubba, who I do really believe in, can start to take those chances because they've shown that over the season that that they're really capable of doing that. um But it just didn't seem our day. I thought Whistler again, missed another golden chance in the second half. um I think it was a Dam's guard cross followed by a shard, a flick on.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
the ball came to him very, very quickly. The whole action happened very quickly, but really the goal was gaping in front of him. He was unable to keep the ball down. I thought if that was on target, I thought it was likely to go in and it's disappointing from his point of view. Again, we expect him now almost to finish off chances like that. he's He's definitely considered as the best finisher at the club. and you know, I think he'll be disappointed that he wasn't able to take either that or is to headed chance in the first half. And it was moments like that, which a few and far between in the game, which we probably need to take if we were to get anything out of the game. And I do think it was one of those where the game could have been very different if we had scored, I think Spurs heads could have gone down. um We may have, you know, been even more commanding in the game and we may have gone on to perhaps win the game if that had happened because, you know,
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
the run they've been on, Spurs, I could easily see their confidence evaporating if that had gone in. Layton, perhaps the other good chance that Brevard had, was Carl Valio's overhead kick, which is cleared off the line in the closing stages. This would have been a really big moment for him. um and And I want this to happen for him. i what I want him to have a big moment. I know he scored one or two earlier in the season, but I don't know. it It never felt like it was his real breakthrough moment. And I think he really needs to score an important goal like this at this stage in the season for us to you know realize that he's still here and that he's ready to contribute and that he's got that potential. I do believe he has that potential, but I think he has been a little bit disappointing at times. I think he's a little bit wasteful. I think he's a little bit easy to get off the ball.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And even this overhead kick, I thought, you know, it it was it was a decent effort, but I never really felt like it was going in. I thought, you know, it was a pretty routine clearance um for anyone who's standing on the line. I don't think that the effort had enough power on it. um And I think it just summed up Brentford's day in a way where we just weren't able to get over the line in front of goal.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then shortly after that happened Spurs got their second and I've got to talk a little bit about Coyote here I thought he's had very positive feedback following his debut I think he looks very very quick he can bomb on up and down that right hand side you can see that in him he put in one or two good crosses won a couple of corners he's got that long throw which I think caught us all by surprise and It is a proper long throw. I think some of the Brentford players who take long throws are like Sushant and likes to Pinnock. It's not as long as I would like. And I think with Coyote, he has got the longest throw on the team. He was taking them over Jenson, who normally takes them. So that is a fantastic weapon for us to have. And I'm excited to see how we can progress with that.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like I said, on the other hand, you know, the fact he's 20 years old, he looks very, very quick. He may be able to give Rico Henry a run for his money. Um, and ah he looks bright going forwards. I think that's all very, very positive. However, I did think for the goal in the build up to it, he was caught slightly high up the pitch, which left a gap for saw to run into um the eventual goal scorer.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't think Collins maybe shuffles across quick enough, but I think the gap's ultimately caused by Coyote being slightly out of position. And then from there, I also think Valdemarsson maybe should have done better. He was beating at his near post, the ball went through his legs. It's never a particularly good look. I thought it was quite a tight angle, which Sa got the finish away from. and So perhaps he could have done better. But I think with Coyote, what I'm talking about here is I think if he can just tidy up on his and tactical awareness and I think that will partly come as he spends longer with the team. I thought at one point as well he wasn't too sure where to stand at a corner and one one of the other players had to guide him so I do understand that it's difficult with new teammates and he needs more than a week to get that across perhaps in the next two weeks given that we've got two weeks of that game a long period of trading now perhaps he can
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, tighten up on those areas of his game. But I think if he does and if he is more disciplined and if he is more defensively aware and can clean up that side of the game, I think he could be an absolutely brilliant player for us. And I'm very, very excited um to see what he can bring, because on the whole, I thought he looked very, very bright. I've got to talk about Brian and Bummo and a little bit of young whistle. so I thought Brian and Bummo had a bit of a stinker here and I thought he Almost got worse as the game went on.

Set Pieces and Tactical Surprises

00:21:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought we saw a lot of wasteful crossing. I've got to talk about his deliveries from set pieces, particularly corners. Not good enough in my opinion. um and And I think that also stems to our whole setup at corners. It's been a long time now since we scored from a corner. And you know if you look to the two lineups today, and Thomas Frank said it himself, we should have won the set piece battle in this game.
00:22:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we didn't. We we can see it a very, very poor goal from a corner, which we've spoken about. And then, you know, you you look at Tottenham side, you know, they've got Archie Gray, a young central midfielder at centre back. Ben Davies is really a left back. Also in there, you know, they're not the biggest of guys. And then on the other hand, you've got the likes of Kevin Shada. We know he's got a bullet head in in him from just last week.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
got the likes of Nathan Collins, Christopher Iyer, Seth Vandenberg, even the likes of Christian Norgaard who aren't bad in the air. We should be doing better from those situations and I think first and foremost and delivery is not good enough. You see teams like Arsenal and you know whether it's Saka or Declan Rice or even Ranieri who's been taken in recently, they could put the ball on a sixpence. so I don't necessarily expect that every time for Brentford players but I just think too regularly the ball is not going in into even a dangerous area of the box and it is frustrating you know when when the ball either goes over absolutely everybody or hits the first man i think it's very very frustrating we've got to do better from those situations and i think you know the likes of collins vanderberg aya sharda they need to be more physical in the box they need to do more to get to the ball they need to cause opposition more of a headache you know maybe we need to work on different routines i think
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's something that we could be so, so much better at. And on a day where we struggled to create much from open play, again, I thought he perhaps relied a bit, bit too much on crosses and I thought him himself again, crosses weren't really up to the standard. You know, he had that one effort again, where he cut inside and did, and did the the usual shot he likes to do, but it was straight at Kinski. It was a little bit frustrating. I think it's not a good mix with Whistle ah also being wasteful. and And like I said, I think,
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
on a day where we're not creating much from open play and when we're struggling to finish chances off, I think it's really, really important that we're good at our set pieces because, you know, you could have easily seen um us getting a goal from one of these situations on another day. And it's just a shame that we didn't really show up. And I haven't mentioned it in recent weeks, but I do think it has been a problem. I think if if I'm sitting here thinking about it now,
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't remember the last time we scored um from our own corner directly. I know we're very good at defending them, but I think we need to do a little bit better um in front of goal at the other end. So that's something to watch out for in the next few weeks and hopefully in the next couple of weeks of training. That's something that the club are able to look at.
00:24:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Tottenham, just briefly, I think Ann Spostakoglou is a manager who's always been criticised for not really changing his system. However, they surprised me here. I think they played a lot differently to how I expected them to play. I wonder whether that caught us by surprise as well, and maybe meant our game plan didn't work as well as it could have or should have. and You know, they almost most surrender possession to a degree.
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
there was less of them swarming forwards. There was less of their fallbacks in particular, finding themselves in the box, which was a trademark of Spurs when when when they've got all that all their players fit and available. um It was gritty. It was determined. I think it was highlighted on match of the day as well. um and And it was just not what I expected to see from them. So I think you've you've got to give them some points in some ways, although I do think there is an element of missed opportunity here because I also don't think there is at their best. And I think they could have been got out with their injuries. And I don't think we really took advantage of that situation. And that's left us in a situation where we have not won back to back league games now since last April. And it leads me to worry that we are not showing the consistency that is needed really to go on the run required if we are to achieve a European place in the Premier League this season.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I said before the game, this is a crucial run for us to go on. I think around now, if we are to achieve that goal, if we had won here, we would have been three points off eighth place, which is likely to be a European spot this season. If there are to be five champions, these bots in the premier league. So I think it's a great shame that we couldn't, that we missed out here and and it's another home game.
00:26:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, just as we seem to start winning on the road, we are faltering a little bit at home. I just don't think we're showing the consistency required at the moment, which is a shame. Um, and again, you know, I might be saying something differently if we go on to win the next three, which are away at, um, West Ham and Leicester and then at home it gets Everton, but at the moment.

Brentford's Inconsistency in Pursuit of Europe

00:26:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just can't quite see it. I think we're mid table for a reason and that is because you know we win one, we lose one. We're not that consistent side and to not have won back to back league games all season. I think that will definitely need to change and we need to probably win three or four in a row at some stage if we are to really threaten the area of the table that we want to be in. But anyway, that that will do for today. um I think it's one to move on from. It's going to be a long two weeks. i think to to think about this result. Obviously we're out of the cup as well um due to our own doing. So we don't have a game next weekend. So hopefully the team can get a good couple of weeks of training in. Hopefully we can be in a good place for West Ham away. um And hopefully we can bounce back there again and hopefully back that up beyond that in the games we've got coming up. But thank you for listening.
