Welcome back for another edition of Daily Reading of the Bible. Thank you for joining me today.

Overview of Job Readings

00:00:10
Speaker
Today is July 13th and you are here with Robin at In The Family Way Coaching.
00:00:16
Speaker
We are going to be reading from the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:23
Speaker
If you are following along on that daily commitment calendar, go ahead and get that out and your sticker or however you're marking it off because you are about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:36
Speaker
Thank you for following along with our daily reading. I hope that you are looking forward to hearing more about the story of Job. Today our reading covers chapters three through six and then eight and nine.

Job's Lament and Suffering

00:00:57
Speaker
Our first section is entitled crying instead of eating.
00:01:04
Speaker
When we left off yesterday, his friends were sitting with him and nobody said anything because they could see how badly he had been he was hurting. And they sat with him for seven days and nights.
00:01:18
Speaker
Then Job talked. I should never have been born. My birthday shouldn't even be on the calendar. If I hadn't been born, I wouldn't have this trouble.
00:01:31
Speaker
I'm crying instead of eating, and tears flow out of me like water. i was afraid of this. Now it has happened. I don't have any peace.
00:01:44
Speaker
I just have trouble.

Eliphaz's Advice

00:01:47
Speaker
Then Eliphaz said, You've said things to cheer people up, and now trouble has come to you. You want to give up.
00:01:57
Speaker
If I were you, i would talk to God about this. I would tell him what's happening. Good things come to people when God shows them they are wrong. So don't think God's training is bad.
00:02:10
Speaker
He will save you from fights and robbers. He will save you from wild animals.

Job's Response and Friendships

00:02:17
Speaker
If only I could weigh my trouble, said Job. It would weigh more than the sand by the sea. I'm not strong. So what can I hope in?
00:02:30
Speaker
I can't help myself. A man who is sad should have his friends help. But I can't trust you. Are you trying to tell me I'm wrong? you think my words are just hot air?
00:02:42
Speaker
i think you would sell your own friend. Have I said anything sinful? Don't I know what's right and wrong to say? Things are still right between me and God.

Bildad's Accusation

00:02:56
Speaker
Hot air. Then Bill Dad spoke. How long will you talk like that? Your words are like hot air. Does God do things that are not fair?
00:03:08
Speaker
Your children sinned, so God paid them back for their sins. Look to God, beg him for help, be good and right, and then he will help you.
00:03:20
Speaker
I know that's true, said Job, but how can a person be sinless before God? God's wise thinking is great and his power is great.
00:03:33
Speaker
Who can fight against God and not get hurt? God moves mountains and they don't even know it. He tells the sun not to shine and it doesn't.
00:03:45
Speaker
He is the only one who can make the sky. He made all the stars to form pictures in the sky. He walks on sea waves. God does wonders that no one can understand.
00:03:59
Speaker
He passes by me and I can't see him. Who would ask God, what are you doing? So how can I make a fuss with God? What words can I say?
00:04:12
Speaker
i couldn't answer his questions even if I hadn't sinned. I could only ask God to be kind to me. Is this about power?
00:04:24
Speaker
God has the most power. Is this about being fair? Who can say God is not fair? My words would blame me even if I didn't sin.
00:04:37
Speaker
My days go by faster than a person can run. They slide past like paper boats. They fly like eagles diving down for food.
00:04:49
Speaker
I might say, I'll forget about what's wrong. I'll smile now. But I'm still afraid of my troubles. I know you will blame me. You already think I'm wrong. So why should I fight it?
00:05:05
Speaker
God is not a man, so I can't answer him like I would answer a man. I can't take him to a judge. I wish someone would make peace between God and me.
00:05:18
Speaker
i wish someone one would take God's anger away from me. Then I could talk to him without being afraid. But right now I can't.
00:05:32
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Comparing Job and Jeremiah

00:05:40
Speaker
We read in Jeremiah that when Jeremiah was upset too, that he also wished that his days had never been born, that he had never had his birth date on the calendar as well.
00:05:51
Speaker
And sometimes we have a said ourselves maybe that, I just wish I had never been born. And so part of this is universal suffering that we can see that Job's feelings were the same way back then as they are for us now, when we have bad times, when we have hard things and we don't understand why things are happening.

Naomi and Ruth's Story

00:06:14
Speaker
When ah Naomi, lived in another land when she left Israel because of the famine. She and her husband and their two sons went to a different land and they married and ah their wives were the only ones left because the children, the boys got killed and Ruth's, ah Naomi's husband was killed.
00:06:38
Speaker
And when and the famine was over, Naomi was heading back to her ah native land there in Israel. And she was so sad. And she said, when I left, I was full and I'm coming back empty handed.
00:06:52
Speaker
And she just felt like there was nothing good for her. And Ruth ended up staying with her. And we could see down the line that God had plans.
00:07:03
Speaker
that had her sons not been killed, that Ruth would never have met Boaz and married Boaz, and Ruth would not have been the descendant of of Jesus.
00:07:16
Speaker
So we see that no matter what, God does work good into things.

Purpose of Job's Suffering

00:07:20
Speaker
And we know that this instance is being carried out because the adversary has accused Job before God, saying that he will ah turn away from God.
00:07:34
Speaker
And so we want to keep in the mind of situation. God is not inflicting these things on him. He is allowing Job to go through testing to show his ah his ability to stay true to God.
00:07:48
Speaker
And so over and over, that's our overarching theme throughout Job is that he is not saying bad things about God. And we want to make sure that as we go through difficult times that we not turn away from God, even though we may not understand what is going on.

Value of Supportive Friends

00:08:04
Speaker
And it may seem like things are just beyond help. even though his friends are not helpful. And ah here Job says that when, let's see, how does he put it?
00:08:19
Speaker
He says,
00:08:27
Speaker
he says, a man who is sad should have his friends help. But I can't trust you. Are you trying to tell me that I'm wrong? Do you think my words are just hot air? I think you would sell your own friend.
00:08:40
Speaker
And he insists that things are still right between him and God. So it's it's just important again that we note what we talked about yesterday, that ah when people have hard times, whether it's us or whether it's someone else, that we not just immediately assume that God is punishing us for doing something wrong.

Faith During Trials

00:08:59
Speaker
Sometimes God does allow us to go through things in order to give us times to strengthen our faith, to be able to rely on him and just trust in him, that no matter what, he is going to be with us.
00:09:11
Speaker
And at the very end of this particular reading, Job says that he wishes someone would make peace between God and him, and someone one would take God's anger away from him, and that he could talk to him without being afraid.
00:09:26
Speaker
But right now he couldn't. We have Jesus and god Jesus has paid the price for any sins we may have. So ah we you can take comfort in knowing that our God is not just an angry God who just does things out of being mean.
00:09:43
Speaker
We may not understand God's higher purpose. And here, God was not striking out at Job to be spiteful or mean. He was allowing the adversary to test Job.
00:09:55
Speaker
And God gave him permission to do these things that were done to Job, but they will not last forever. ah We know that the story will end up having a happy ending.
00:10:06
Speaker
But it is sure is tough when we are right in the thick of things, going through things. But we want to maintain our faith in God. And we do have Jesus. He has paid the price for our sins.
00:10:18
Speaker
So we may ah at times actually be going through discipline, but and if if God searches our hearts and and reveals to us that what we are going through is sometimes for the benefit of other people to see our faith in God.
00:10:35
Speaker
Like even Paul, he prayed for three times for a thorn in his side to be taken away from him. And God said, no. So there are times that God allows us to have things to deal with, and we are meant to carry that burden.
00:10:51
Speaker
But God is still always with us, no matter what. And that's one of the things we mentioned yesterday, is that no matter what, God is still always with us.

Comedian's Tale on Faith

00:11:01
Speaker
And we don't ever want to allow circumstances to turn us away from God.
00:11:06
Speaker
I went to an event a couple of months ago where I went to go see a comedian. And so the evening is, you know, when you go see a comedian, it's supposed to be funny. And the opening comedian was a man who ah was going through cancer.
00:11:25
Speaker
And so his whole act was ah dealing with with going through cancer and things like that. But he in that act, he was sharing i his testimony about how he used to be a youth pastor.
00:11:41
Speaker
And since going through this bout with cancer, he no longer maintained a job as a youth pastor, not because he couldn't work, but because he didn't believe that God was there with him anymore.
00:11:55
Speaker
So in this situation that he was going through, he had turned away from God. And he said that ah ah when people tried to show him that he needed to turn back to God and that they were doing things that were turning away from God, he had all of these answers that were ah worldly answers that were that he he wasn't going to have faith in a God who allowed him to go through such suffering.
00:12:26
Speaker
And so it made me wonder if he'd ever read the book of Job as being a youth pastor. So it might be that it it was rather good that he wasn't in that field anymore because then you know he wouldn't be discouraging to other believers, but his own faith was turned away.
00:12:42
Speaker
And he said that he had difficulties with the church as well um because he had cancer, his and health insurance premiums had gone up and they um They wanted to keep, they were being difficult with him as a church.
00:12:57
Speaker
And so I don't know what denomination he was in or anything. and ah But he just, in his difficulty and in his trials, he had turned away from God.
00:13:10
Speaker
And that's one thing we want to be very careful of because that is exactly what the adversary has accused Job will do.

Be a True Friend

00:13:18
Speaker
And so in the event that he is accusing us and saying that we will be turning away from God, we want to be sure that we don't allow him to have that upper hand, that we do not fall away from God, no matter what.
00:13:30
Speaker
And like I've definitely seen that it happens. um So it can happen. But ah we ah we want to be sure that when we see other people going through difficult times, that we are not discouraging like the friends were for for joe and just telling him that he was constantly doing something wrong.
00:13:49
Speaker
ah Job was right. they He needed friends in this time of need. So we want to be sure that we are being friends to someone in difficult times because we don't have all the answers either as to what is going on and why.
00:14:01
Speaker
We can just trust that what God is doing, God will work good into it. No matter what, God will work good into everything, no matter how bad it seems.

Personal Story of Finding Good

00:14:11
Speaker
I know that I have personally experienced that with my husband having a stroke.
00:14:16
Speaker
One would not think that that is a good thing to go through, but God brought a lot of good out of that. Last week we had argument and I was very frustrated with my husband and I prayed to God and asked him to show me the good that he would bring out of it.
00:14:31
Speaker
And God did. He showed me good that would come out of it. And I was so thankful to him for that. And it was just, it was really a beautiful thing to see. It was not fun to go through. And I won't go into all the things that I was frustrated about and with our argument and like that, but it was not a short to argument, that's for sure. And ah yet, despite that, God did show me good that he would work into it.
00:14:57
Speaker
So I wanted to encourage you when you have difficult times to ask God to show you the good that he will bring out of it. And I asked him ah to show me sooner rather than later. and he did.
00:15:09
Speaker
He did show me sooner rather than later. So I hope that you have been encouraged today and that you feel God has lit your light with today's reading in Job.

Preview of Upcoming Sessions

00:15:18
Speaker
We have ah four more days to go in the book of Job, and then we will continue on with the book of Daniel.
00:15:25
Speaker
So just wanted to give you a little foresight into what we have coming up in the coming days. So please take the time, if you feel that God has lit your light, to click that light button, that we may be the light of the world and shine this event for Jesus so that we can draw others to God's word that they too may be encouraged because everybody goes through difficult times.
00:15:45
Speaker
We all go through them at times. And we could all use that encouragement to be reminded that God is there for us and is still with us no matter what we are going through and that he will still work good into whatever circumstance we are going through at that time.
00:16:01
Speaker
And I want everybody to be encouraged by reading God's word. so I'm very passionate about spreading that word about reading God's word. I know even when I wake up grumpy in the morning, taking the time to first dive into their daily reading, it really makes me feel better.
00:16:17
Speaker
And I know that it will help you too if you take the time when you are upset about something going on to just dive into God's word because he will comfort you. So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, and I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
