Today's reading will cover the Book of Job Chapter 11:1-5, 7-9, 12-16, Chapter 12:1-4, 7-16, Chapter 13:4-5, Chapter 15:1-2, 8-9, 11-13, 17, 20-25, Chapter 16:1-3, 7, 10, 16-17, 19-21, and Chapter 31:5-7, 13, 18-40. Today we will read about Job listing all the ways in which he has honored God and did what was right, trying to understand why he is having to go through such hardships. We will see his "friends" continuing to offer condemnation, telling him that he MUST have done something wrong and he must be angry with God. Job responded telling his friends that they were doing a bad job of cheering him up and not interceding for him with God on his behalf and praying for him. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about making sure that when someone we know is experiencing hard times that we offer comfort rather than condemnation, interceding with prayers on their behalf and bearing their burdens with them.

Exploring Job's Story: Suffering and Righteousness

00:00:35
Speaker
can see I have my fan on if you're watching the video. That paper blew a little bit. and my My leaves are blowing in the wind back here on my family tree.
00:00:45
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me today, whether you're following along on your podcast or whether you're on video somewhere. I'm so glad that you're joining me for today's reading. We are continuing in the story of Job today.
00:00:57
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing ah something that we may all have a tendency to do when things start to go wrong and it just seems like it's one thing after another, after another, after another, after another.
00:01:11
Speaker
And we may start to sit there and say, what is it that is going on? i'm not and my um I can't be being disciplined because I haven't done anything wrong. And then we proceed to start naming and listing off our ah potentially very long list of of all the things that we have done right.
00:01:29
Speaker
And i know that I have found myself doing this in the past, so I can't be the only one because the book of Job tells me that he did this as well. And the other hand is that we are seeing his three supposed friends who are here with him, and nobody's doing a whole lot of comforting. They're doing a whole lot of condemning.
00:01:53
Speaker
So we have those two C words. We have comfort and we have condemn.

Zophar's Challenge to Job

00:01:57
Speaker
And what we are seeing in the book of Job is that the friends who are with him are not very helpful to him.
00:02:06
Speaker
And we're going to see Job i tell them so today. So today's reading takes us through Job chapters 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, and then skipping all the to chapter 31.
00:02:18
Speaker
fifteen sixteen and then skipping all the way to chapter thirty one
00:02:28
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, Deeper Than the Deep Earth.
00:02:37
Speaker
Then Zophar talked to Job. Someone has to answer you. Do you think we'll listen to this and be quiet? You tell God that you're not wrong and you say you haven't done anything wrong.
00:02:51
Speaker
I wish God would talk to you. He would talk against you. Can you understand God? Can you find out how great God is? God's ways are higher than all of space.
00:03:05
Speaker
They are deeper than the deep earth. God's ways are longer than the earth. They are wider than the sea. So how much do you know?
00:03:17
Speaker
Love God with your whole heart and stop sinning. Then you can come to God and you won't feel bad about

Job's Response to Zophar

00:03:25
Speaker
it. you won You will forget this trouble.
00:03:29
Speaker
You must be all people rolled into one, said Joe. Wise thinking will die when you die. But I have a mind just like you do, and you're not more important than I am.
00:03:42
Speaker
I'm right. I am not to blame. But you laugh at me. Ask animals about it, and they'll teach you. Ask the birds, they'll tell you.
00:03:55
Speaker
Talk to the earth, it will teach you. Let the fish tell you. They know God has done this.

Eliphaz vs Job: A Clash of Perspectives

00:04:03
Speaker
He holds the life of every being in his hand.
00:04:08
Speaker
Older people are wise, and the longer you live, the more you understand.
00:04:14
Speaker
Wise thinking and power belong to God, and you can't build back what he tears down. You can't set free the person he puts in jail.
00:04:25
Speaker
When God keeps the rain away, the land dries up. When he sends lots of rain, it floods the land. Power is God's.
00:04:36
Speaker
He is the one who wins. You are all good for nothing doctors. I wish you would all be quiet. That would be wise for you.
00:04:48
Speaker
Being angry at God.
00:04:52
Speaker
Then Eliphaz spoke. A wise man wouldn't talk about these good for nothing ideas. morninging and trouble He wouldn't fill himself with hot air.
00:05:05
Speaker
Do you think you're the only one who is wise? What do you know that we don't know? Aren't God's words good enough for you? Why are you so angry?
00:05:19
Speaker
You're being angry at God. Listen, I'll tell you how it is. People who sin have trouble all their lives. They give up thinking they'll get out of the dark.
00:05:33
Speaker
Sadness and worry fill them with fear. And it's all because they shake their fists at God. They come against God who has all power.
00:05:44
Speaker
Will you ever stop talking? Said Job. You all do a bad job of cheering a person up.

Job's Frustration and Need for Support

00:05:51
Speaker
Why do you keep fussing at me? God, you wear me out.
00:05:59
Speaker
You tore down my whole family. People laugh at me. My face is red because I cried so much. But I haven't done anything mean or hateful.
00:06:14
Speaker
The one who sees it all is in heaven. The one who speaks up for me is my friend. He talks to God for me while my tears flow.
00:06:27
Speaker
Our last section is entitled, Let God Test Me.
00:06:33
Speaker
If I lied, then let God test me, said Job. God will know that I did nothing wrong. Did I turn away from God? Did my eyes leave my heart?
00:06:46
Speaker
Did my hands do wrong? I was like a father to children who had no fathers. I helped women whose husbands had died. ah gave clothes to people who needed clothes.
00:06:57
Speaker
I didn't use my power to hurt people. i didn't trust in gold. My great riches were not my joy. i didn't worship the sun or the moon. wasn't glad when my enemies had trouble.
00:07:11
Speaker
I shared my food with many people. My door was always open to strangers. I didn't hide sin in my heart. I paid the people who worked in my fields.
00:07:24
Speaker
I wish somebody would hear me. Let God answer me. Let him tell me what I did wrong.
00:07:33
Speaker
And that's all Job said.
00:07:38
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:07:44
Speaker
Job is a hard story to hear, don't you think? We know that the reason that Job is going through this is because the adversary... has questioned his faith in God, saying that he will speak poorly about God.
00:07:58
Speaker
Through all of this, he is not speaking poorly about God. He is simply saying, what did I do to deserve everything that is happening to me? He said in yesterday's reading, he said, I feared that these types of things would happen.
00:08:11
Speaker
Here they have happened. So he has tried hard to avoid consequence. And so all of this happening to him, he can only understand as being Unfair. Why did he have all of these things happen when by ah justification of doing all the right things, he shouldn't have any of this happening?
00:08:33
Speaker
And his friends are simply saying, well, you must have done something wrong. You're sinful and you're just not telling anybody what it is you've done. But whatever it is, God sees it. And our daily application today is Job calling out to them and saying, you all do a bad job of cheering a person up.
00:08:52
Speaker
Why do you keep fussing at me? This comes to us from chapter 16. And it's not included in our reading. So I'm going to read the the rest of that that verse that speaks about that.
00:09:07
Speaker
In Job chapter 16, verse 4, we'll start with with the verse 3. Job says to his friends, Is there no end to your futile words?
00:09:20
Speaker
What compels you to answer? I too could speak like you if you were in my place. I could compose words against you and shake my head at you.
00:09:32
Speaker
But I would strengthen you with my mouth and comfort for my lips would bring you relief. So even in in this, Job is saying that where the turnret tables turn, he wouldn't be doing what they are doing.
00:09:48
Speaker
He is sure that in the time if it were to be there, that he would be doing the right thing. And we don't know for sure that that would be the way that it is because no one is perfect.
00:10:01
Speaker
And Job is certain that he hasn't done anything wrong to deserve what it is that's going on. But sometimes what we learn from here is that God is simply giving us opportunity to maintain our faith and be strong in our faith and to not speak poorly about God and to turn away from God, which is what the adversary has claimed Job will do.
00:10:23
Speaker
And Job is not turning away from God. But our daily application is to do what Job is asking. If people are in difficult situations, it's not helpful to say, well, what sin did you commit?
00:10:38
Speaker
You must have done something wrong or God wouldn't be punishing you. Job says at the end of chapter 16, The one who speaks up for me is my friend.
00:10:50
Speaker
He talks to God for me while my tears flow. In the Big Bible, Job uses the word intercessor. Job says in verse 20, My intercessor is my friend.
00:11:05
Speaker
As my eyes pour out tears to God, he contends with God on behalf of man as one pleads for a friend. Job says, you're not even praying for me in this situation.
00:11:18
Speaker
I'm very upset and you're not even praying on my behalf for me. All you're doing is telling me that I must have done something wrong and that I deserve what I got.

The Power of Intercession and Support

00:11:27
Speaker
So we want to be sure that we are interceding for our friends when we go through difficult times.
00:11:36
Speaker
One of the things that God mentions to the people people of Israel is that no one is interceding for one another. So we spoke about that one day as part of our daily application, is that just as the Holy Spirit that we have now intercedes for us, God wants us to intercede for one another. He wants us to pray for one another.
00:11:57
Speaker
He wants us to bring comfort to one another. And this is something that his friends are completely devoid of doing. They are not doing in any way, shape, or form.
00:12:08
Speaker
So we want to be sure that when times come that we are not simply tempted. to condemn people, but to offer comfort and intercession for people as they go through difficult times.
00:12:23
Speaker
And that is our daily application today.
00:12:27
Speaker
So thank you for joining me as we are going through the book of Job. We have a couple of days left, and then how we will head into our next section of Daniel, I think it is. So thank you for joining me. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day.
00:12:42
Speaker
and hope that you feel that God has lit your light. And as always, as I do every day, i would request that you please click that light button that looks like a thumbs up or it looks like a heart.
00:12:52
Speaker
But we know it's really a light button. And together we are the light of the world. So thank you for shining your light for this event so that other people can hear God's word and be encouraged to be intercessors for one another and pray for one another.
00:13:08
Speaker
and to bear one another's burdens, as we are told in the New Testament, rather than simply condemning. So have a fantastic rest of your day, and I will be with everyone here for our next daily reading tomorrow.
