Introduction & Premier League Aspirations

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge. I'll be your host today. With me, as I think is quite often the case on Monday, is the anti-Garfield, Wiley Bakari.
00:00:23
Wale Bakare
Yeah. I'm
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you doing, Wiley?
00:00:27
Wale Bakare
all right, Paul. Great to see you. Great to be on the pot tonight, especially you after a great result you know during the weekend. Well, I'm i'm sure ill get to talk about this at some point in the pot today. But I look at the Premier League table and I just wonder, like I do the maths, I'm thinking if Palace gets this number of wins, this could happen, that could happen.
00:00:50
Wale Bakare
And i'm I'm quite excited at the moment.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,

Ipswich Victory Review & Challenges

00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
love it. We can channel that excitement and energy through the episode. That's great. I think all Palace fans have to be pretty delighted with where they're at at the moment. a They won yesterday, and that's what we're going to be reviewing in today's episode.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a home win against a admittedly potentially relegation-bound Ipswich side. um Palace snatched the three points late on, because Myla Saar dinking the ball over Alex Palmer in minute 82.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
The win, as you alluded to there, Wiley, now means that Palace have nine in 11, nine wins in 11, and the second-best league form of any team in the year 2025 in the um On this particular game, how did they approach it? well Did it work?
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
1-0, took it to the 82nd minute to get the goal against Ipswich at home. is that Should they have made their lives a bit easier or was it well-earned, well-deserved win?

Premier League Difficulty & Ipswich's Potential

00:02:07
Wale Bakare
It's is getting to that point of the season where you cannot guarantee easy games anymore because, um you know, it's getting to the to the end of the season. There's a lot of stake for a lot of teams.
00:02:18
Wale Bakare
um Ipswich, of course, even though they find themselves, I think before that game, they were six points behind both Hampton Wanderers. um they they would still look at it and say, we we've got a chance here.
00:02:31
Wale Bakare
If we can get a win or get a good result you know at Palace, we can kickstart you know maybe from a resurgence ah towards the end of the season. So, there's no you you can't find easy games at this time. We saw Southampton against Liverpool. It took the second half of Liverpool to get back into the game.
00:02:51
Wale Bakare
But that That's the story of this period of the Premier League. so it it wasn't always it wasn't going to be easy.

Impact of Missing Players on Palace's Strategy

00:02:58
Wale Bakare
We also should say of the three teams in the relegation places, maybe it's each other one you know that have played better.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:12
Wale Bakare
in a lot of games, they've gotten some good results, they've made things difficult for a couple of teams. So it wasn't always going to be an easy game for Palace, especially con considering you know Mateta was ah i was forced ah to miss the game.
00:03:29
Wale Bakare
there were you know so it meant that there was bit of Very little personnel change, but then it changes the style of the team, the structure. You know, you're missing what Mateta brings in, you know, winning all the aerial drills and, you know, running those channels and dragging defenders to himself. And, you know, it's just a different kind of striker. So, it oh oh to be honest, what was important for Palace was get the get the result, get the victory and, you know, move on to the next game. and And that's exactly what they did in that game.
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah you're right to point out that there are no easy games in the Premier League except Southampton Leicester this season. And Ipswich, as you say, I think despite being on a similar points tally to certainly Leicester, are not an easy game.
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
They seem to be in most matches and always ask questions, do some good things, and they they just can't quite find a way to translate it into...
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
into results but you watch them you're seeing a well coached well drilled side with players of serious quality in like Philogene CISO you can see how much ability he had on again Saturday
00:04:46
Wale Bakare
the mantel up as well.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, De Lapp's the big one. Hutchinson as well is a really good player, I think. So you look at that squad full of that much talent and one of the most highly rated young managers in the country at the helm.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you just think, I think the only explanation really is... the quality in the premier league these days as over the last sort of six or seven years reached such a level that even a team that good coming up from the championship are going to struggle to um sustain a pet position there and it's a bit of a shame because they've been yeah they've been good i think they couldn't really have hoped to have done any better their squad building's been pretty good signed good players They've newly been promoted, having only been promoted from ah League One to Championship the year before.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So really, they've been pretty impressive in league this season. And it's a shame they just haven't quite managed to turn that into a run of results. And they will need to do so pretty quickly if they're going to put pressure on Wolves, who look like they could be pulling away and um making that...
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
relegation battle look dead and buried pretty soon. But I enjoyed this game.

Game Analysis: Palace vs Ipswich

00:06:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was 1-0 never sounds that great. um But it was very entertaining.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both teams clearly feel their attacking strength is in the transition, tried to hit each other very quickly and largely succeeded in doing it. Both teams created a lot of chances. I think it was something like in the region of like 3.4 xg to pal one point eight to ah switch so and what lalexes palace palace did create the better chances and were good value for the win but both keepers had good games both teams could have scored more
00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both defences probably could have done a bit better.
00:06:44
Wale Bakare
Mm-hmm.
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think either defence were at their best. um But it had very German feel to the game. Maybe that was just because I was sat on Saturday watching it in a ah Spain which had been visited by German weather whilst that Manchester was playing host to the son of the Copacabana.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was... Yeah. It was a Very entertaining game. Palace edge it. Two teams trying play the same kind of football.
00:07:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
think you can really have we have too many complaints with that.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um so Speaking of quality of Palace and, yeah as we say, the attacking players particularly delivered.
00:07:22
Wale Bakare
Thank you.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
The goalkeepers on both teams were particularly impressive. Who really stood out in this Palace game, and from the Palace team in this game, Wale?
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And think I've given you a bit of a tee-up with the keeper there.
00:07:52
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he deserves a bit a round of applause, doesn't he?
00:07:56
Wale Bakare
okay thats is yeah so yeah Of course, had a great game, made some key saves, kept his concentration ah for a large part of the game. That is something that is very difficult to do at at at a time when ah Ipswich did pile up the pressure at some point in the game. he was It didn't look like it wasn't going to get beaten in that game, whatever his defenders were doing right in front of him.
00:08:25
Wale Bakare
And, you know, sometimes you need your goalkeeper to take things into their hands and just youll get you to point. And Anderson did that ah you know over the weekend. Of course, the Smilers are getting the goal.
00:08:38
Wale Bakare
Apart from the goal, did play good. Fantastic finish, by the way, for the goal. um Could easily easily have maybe tried to go under the goalkeeper or if the goalkeeper could have tried to chip it and got things horribly wrong but it shows the like the confidence in him to you know to try that out and you know execute it perfectly and you know amazing celebration I have to say ah you know um emulating the big man who

Striker Performance & Opportunities in Premier League

00:09:10
Wale Bakare
Nice. But then, um you know, so the the bunch of the other guys did good. um um Yeah, the guys in defence, I think Munoz was had a great, had a good game.
00:09:22
Wale Bakare
Again, Jefferson Lemma, I think, had a good game as well, as well as Adam Wharton, who was fantastic until, you know, he was substituted. um I know you didn't ask this, but just I just have to say, I was really hoping to see more from Edin Ketia.
00:09:39
Wale Bakare
um You know, and you so we've been talking so much about if he gets a run of games, if he
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:09:47
Wale Bakare
you know but now you you might get a couple of games under his belt depending on when Mateta comes back but although lucky for Palace there's international breaks so that will take some time away from you know Mateta being injured and all but um I think it's at that point where Nketiah has to be grabbing the chances that he gets and he got you know, an opportunity to, could have easily played, you know, the full game if he was really playing well.
00:10:17
Wale Bakare
But um once the the changes needed to be made, you was almost first choice on the mind of Olivier Glasner. It did, you you cannot question his endeavour, of course, you cannot question his work rate, you can never question that, but I think we've got to a point now in football where Yes, we a lot of times we strikers work, or even talk about, oh, they bring a lot into the team, but they're almost always measured by the by the goals that they contribute.
00:10:48
Wale Bakare
um And for Nketiah, he's just not contributed enough, particularly for the fact that he was brought in for, what, £40 million, thereabouts?
00:11:00
Wale Bakare
The only good thing is the fact that Arsenal never did anything sensible with the money, so you can take solace from that. But it's just not scored in enough or it's not you know contributed enough in terms of goals for you know war was what has been expected of him so far.
00:11:17
Wale Bakare
If he was coming from a different league, you could say, oh it's taking time to settle and all of that. It's coming from Arsenal with challenge for the title. in you know the last two seasons they spent there to Palace and is obviously struggled to settle why that is I really cannot put my fingers on it.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i do feel a bit bad for Nketiah his chances are now so limited that basically, I agree, you probably look at this game and go, he's not seized his opportunity to be the leading man.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he actually has had... sort two games, not even really two games, like 17 minutes in and yeah um the Cup against Millwall and a start here in the league. And in the Cup, he did really well.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And here he did, but you're right, it it won't be enough for him, but he okay.
00:12:20
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He...
00:12:22
Wale Bakare
I just wanted to Joe, I was going to say, you know, you talk about taking opportunities. You look at the the man who went to Saudi Arabia recently, John Duran, and asked him like, you know,
00:12:33
Wale Bakare
got himself to a level where Watkins' starting place was called into question.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I know
00:12:40
Wale Bakare
So for strikers, you've got to take those opportunities.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
we're talking like we're talking kind of messy Ronaldo levels goals per minutes from John Duran that was ridiculous levels
00:12:48
Wale Bakare
ah
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but I do see your point. and he And he really did have the chance in this game and didn't take them. He has that one where Wharton plays that lovely outside the football into it.
00:13:05
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a bit of a tame effort really from him. But he pressed well, he linked up play well. He nearly pressed the ball into the net at one point. um so I don't think it was disastrous performance for him, but as you say, it's just not good enough to put pressure on a Mateto who's been in such good form and is now probably expected to be back for Palace's next game against Fulham, given the 20-day break ahead

Crystal Palace's Future Prospects

00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
of us. I feel a bit bad for him.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
so gets He's got a lot of minutes and in his main position and it's it's it's difficult but this is the highest level that is that is the premier league now um and you just don't really get that patience teams have the resources to get someone else and if you don't deliver quickly so yeah you don't get chance after chance after chance um so it's a shame but don't know he's versatile forward i'm sure it'll come in handy eventually um
00:14:01
Wale Bakare
Thank you.
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also think, yeah, Wharton deserved credit. a
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was his most adventurous performance, I think, I've seen in a Palace shirt in terms of his passing um for positive and negative. Created two big chances.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
made like four long passes, maybe swinging like four crosses or something as well. um But also only, that was probably reflective of the chaos of the game and the eagerness to get the forward quickly because he only completed 66% or something of his passes, which is not a great number. But I think the job he was tasked with was move the ball into dangerous areas quickly. And he certainly did that.
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um so I think he has to go down as another really good confident promising display from him how picture is recently I'm looking forward to this English contingent around Madrid Trent, Walton, Jude Bellingham will be the best thing since Woodgate out and David Beckham
00:14:54
Wale Bakare
it just It just worries me. The more it plays well, the more we'll keep hearing the rumors about CT and the lights. Hmm.
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um yeah, I also think Saar deserves look at it. Sharp took his goal really well, was a threat or game. And he's the only person who understood what i understood that this, like every Palace game, is really all about John Flick and Ateta. So I love loved seeing that celebration at the end from him.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But... We will take a pause there. We've just mentioned John Felipe Mateta. He's in great shape. um We will now have a word from our sponsors who can help you get into John Felipe Mateta style shape too.
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Palace now have 39 points. That's that win. One safe of the Magic 40. Are they safe from relegation though?
00:16:40
Wale Bakare
um um I did say at the start, I'm um um'm totally you know thinking beyond relegation.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So on on a more serious question, how how much can Palace do this season?
00:16:44
Wale Bakare
Well,
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
How high can they finish?
00:16:51
Wale Bakare
well but it It totally depends on you know if the form continues. we We've seen two sides of Palace this season. We've seen very shambolic run of form and we've seen this fantastic, amazing run of form.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:17:04
Wale Bakare
So if that continues, then that there's no no telling as to where the team will get. I was thinking about it. There's 10 more games this season. Palace have won nine in the last 11. Imagine...
00:17:18
Wale Bakare
say, six victories in the last 10, that would be 18 points. 18 with 39 would be 57. I'm not sure any Palace fans looked at Palace at the start of the season and thought, oh, we'll be getting 57 points next season.
00:17:34
Wale Bakare
And but we you know with the way things are going, there's, of course, the vast majority of the teams, and I think, I saw a piece about how tight the European places are. And it goes from um Nottingham Forest in third up until Fulham in tenth.
00:17:55
Wale Bakare
I should say we might start thinking about a lot of people are talking about Arsenal and their title charge. No one's actually paying attention to the fact that they are now about four points just above Chelsea.
00:18:05
Wale Bakare
So I mean Nottingham Forest.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are
00:18:07
Wale Bakare
So they might as well you know be in that battle for top four.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
you suggesting a top four charge for Palace?
00:18:12
Wale Bakare
be yeah So
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is

Premier League Tough Schedule

00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
that what? really into this.
00:18:14
Wale Bakare
what What I'm saying is, what it means is three more points for Palace and more drop points, maybe for Fulham or you look the team just right above them.
00:18:25
Wale Bakare
We might be talking about Palace in that conversation you know for the European places in the next coming week. So it' is' it's going to boil down to how many wins the team can get out of the next 10 games.
00:18:36
Wale Bakare
I don't I reckon at this rate, I reckon 6-7. If that happens, I don't see any reason Palace wouldn't be you know, if not, maybe might just miss out on Europe.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:18:48
Wale Bakare
Let's also remember that the FA Cup run is still very much going and if if that goes well, you know, ah but as I said, I'm i just really excited about, you know, what Palace can achieve this season. Well, I'm smart enough to know that with football, you could be chasing a fourth through four trophies and end up with one and you could be, you know, chasing four and end up with none or you you might as well just end up with all four. So,
00:19:13
Wale Bakare
Anything could happen, and honestly, but i'm I'm really excited about the chances of Palace, know, making really good out of this season, especially after what we saw at the start of the season.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're right. You never know. I mean, Palace, I guess the one caveat is Palace's form, as you say, is tightly enough to carry them into European places compared to teams around them.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suppose the caveat is Palace have quite a tough run in
00:19:42
Wale Bakare
Hmm.
00:19:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But don't know, that's not always been an issue for Glaston's men. Not sure there's been that much correlation between who they're playing against and what results they're getting. ah quite Quite like being the team that's putting a bit of pressure and has the opportunity to break, particularly with the likes of Saar, Munoz coming into such good form.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, I think, the yeah, as you say, they really could push on into at least a kind of conference league position.
00:20:08
Wale Bakare
i mean. Yeah.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think, I think the Cup should be the priority because put a lot of effort into that. think Palace every chance of going all the way to, I mean, easily to Wembley, possibly a final.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who knows from there? And i think surely, don't know, I won't speak for the Palace fan base, but surely they'd take FA Cup glory over a conference league position if that's if that's the choice.
00:20:40
Wale Bakare
and
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:20:42
Wale Bakare
um I think um CTR at the moment you know put at favourite for the FA Cup. They face Bournemouth in a great run of form. that There's no guarantee that they will win that game.
00:20:53
Wale Bakare
If Bournemouth are winning
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I could see them losing.
00:20:55
Wale Bakare
If Bournemouth eliminates City, he just throws the FA Cup wide open.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:20:58
Wale Bakare
But of course, Palace need to win their own game. And you know I was just going to say, yeah, you talk about Palace's tough running, but as as long as you're not playing Southampton or Leicester at the moment, you've got a tough game on your hands.
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah. yeah
00:21:11
Wale Bakare
I think everyone's got a tough running, to be honest.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arguably, there's not the most difference. As last yesterday's four o'clock kick-off show, Arsenal are second and United are 14th, 15th.
00:21:19
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
There wasn't that much difference between them. so it's Outside Liverpool, Leicester and Southampton, the league is little bit samey this season, isn't it?
00:21:32
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah,

International Break & England Squad Selection

00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah. um I think we'll take a little break there and then finish the episode by looking forward to the international break and Thomas Tuchel's squad dilemmas.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
we We want to drive that message home. thank gu
00:22:20
Wale Bakare
Thank you.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
great great Great software for us to make sure you know. I might play it again as the outro. um But speaking of people who've done things twice, a segue, Tuchel was at his second match in a row at Sourhurst, I believe, to watch this one, the New England manager, before he makes his first squad selection in the next international break.
00:22:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So just want briefly touch on, really, Wale, the players in the Palace team that could have a chance... of being in his England selection and kind of how well they acquitted themselves and helped themselves out. So I want start by just really brief thoughts on the break into two parts. So I'll speak briefly just about the four outfielders.
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Gehi, Eze, Wharton, Mitchell. I don't think Nketiah's got a chance of the England squad, so I don't think that's a worthwhile conversation.
00:23:25
Wale Bakare
Well, there's been two. Well, remember Thomas.
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:23:29
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just thinking the a terms of the ones who started the game.
00:23:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you're right, Chilwell is a Tuchel favourite as well. come in but yeah But with them, i how did they perform in front of the England coach?
00:23:31
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And do you think they're likely to be in his first selection?
00:23:50
Wale Bakare
Well, but there's a chance.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
In his first starting line-up even something?
00:23:54
Wale Bakare
has to be a reason. It's been at the you know last two games. I must have seen something best that he's found interesting you know with the Palace side. um Of course, the first thing to do, just as you've pointed out, players that were at the Euros, bar Tariq Mitchell, when you look at... Gay looks like...
00:24:16
Wale Bakare
is most likely going to ah retain that you know England position. You look at the other players oh who can play for a centre-back and you see that you know many have been out injured. They're not a great round of fun. John Stones has made a lot of games.
00:24:33
Wale Bakare
you know um I don't think anyone should be thinking about anything linked to United at the moment. So, Harry Maguire, you're not not doing great at the moment. And as Rekonsa, yeah, maybe he's been okay, but ah But, you know, Gaye, I think, will keep his place.
00:24:50
Wale Bakare
um Adam Walton. based on performances in in recent weeks, I would expect, you know, we'll will'll you get the nod, whether it will be starting and is so a different, you know conversation entirely.
00:25:03
Wale Bakare
The other guys would be, Tarek Mitchell, I don't know, he's had a great season, to be honest. Incidentally, I thought that when Ben Chiuwell came under the game, he might have played better than Mitchell was too.

Wale Bakare
But, you know, Mitchell's had a great season. I'm sure he is someone that, um Tuchel would have looked at and will be looking at. We've talked about him deserving a call-up into the England national team.
00:25:30
Wale Bakare
Chilwell has been injured a lot of times, hasn't played a lot of games. We know, of course, his relationship with Thomas Tuchel. So maybe that will play a part in his decision. But I would expect it would be looking at Tyreek Mitchell ahead of Tuchel.
00:25:47
Wale Bakare
Ben Chilwell, the big question is, and we know that Tuchel also favours the wing back set up as well. So that's something we'll be looking at doing as well. So I really think they've all got a chance of making it into the score. Of course, Bray Chiese hasn't, it's not at the level that he's been, but um It's just one of those players where you know that when is in in a good ed space, when is in a good place mentally or physically, it can deliver for you.
00:26:26
Wale Bakare
It looks like the one that might just miss out ah you know because of the other options
00:26:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:26:33
Wale Bakare
you know, for Turku, look at guys like Morgan Gibbs at, you know, Nottingham Forest, ah you know, having it a great season. Kalamotsin Odor is having a great season. So these are some of the players that I'm sure were playing on the minds of ah Thomas Tuchel. So Eze is one that I think might just miss out, maybe in this first one, but we'll have to wait to see.
00:26:55
Wale Bakare
that That's as far as I would say about the, ah you know, outfield players, which was specifically your question, because...
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right. I mean, Gahey is the one who didn't necessarily have his best game against Ipswich.

England's Goalkeeper Dilemma

00:27:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
think the most notable thing he did was get sat on CISO in his own box.
00:27:11
Wale Bakare
right
00:27:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he played well enough and and just across the season, so consistent, so good.
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
John Stones isn't fit either. So he he's just like a shoo-in, isn't he? He'll come in, he'll start, he'll definitely play. I think...
00:27:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mitchell could go either way, depends what he wants. so like, at left-back, there are a few, certainly a natural left-sided, left-footed, left-backs who've been as as good and consistent um from England as Mitchell this season, over the last couple of seasons, really.
00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's a problem position for them. So, a if Tuchel fancies someone who's just kind of hold the whip, be solid.
00:28:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mitch did that again um again in the match against Ipswich and I don't see why I wouldn't pick him, but if he wants someone who's a bit more adventurous and dynamic, he might look at like a Jed Spence or someone like that, guess, who's come through playing that role.
00:28:10
Wale Bakare
Bye.
00:28:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wharton, you think, why not take him? just The only reason they might not is because they England also don't want to overload him and get injured when he's been out for so long. But he offers something so different that and England are little bit weak in that centre mid position. You think, why not just bring him along and get him the experience and ah bring him on if if you're in a deadlocked game and you need a bit of something magic and creative from that area.
00:28:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then... as he, as you say, could miss out. I think he's a bit of knife-edge, that one. His chances of getting called up are helped by... um saka and um nani madweke both being out i think that kind of insane pool of talent they can have in that area is is shortened a little bit kind of wingers and attacking midfielders but equally as you pointed they've got players like gibbs white they've got players like hudson adoy they can call upon so it's kind of 50 50 i think where he makes it in
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The reason i've I said Henderson is I think he's definitely a shoo-in for the England squad.
00:29:32
Wale Bakare
He's probably the starting goalkeeper for me.
00:29:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, this is my question. This is my question. So has he done enough? kind of crystallised in this performance across this season, that he could now be Tuchel's first pick?
00:29:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could that be one of his sort of statement picks in making his new squad to to drop Southgate favourite Pickford, who was in sticks for pretty much Southgate's entire reign, start to finish?
00:30:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could you see him opting for for Henderson now as the number one instead?
00:30:10
Wale Bakare
Well, that's what I would ask for. That's what I would do. I think Anderson's been... better overall this season than Jordan Pickford.
00:30:22
Wale Bakare
Although you know what then comes into play is the pick Pickford's longevity in between the sticks for England and you know defenders understanding the partnership with him and all of that.
00:30:34
Wale Bakare
But this is ah so it's a new um dispensation, as as they say, and there will be a lot of players getting opportunities um I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of interest interesting changes made by Thomas Tupul as regards you know his first choice and all.
00:30:51
Wale Bakare
I think the form of Dean Henderson is deserving of him starting ahead of Jordan Pickford.
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye.
00:30:57
Wale Bakare
And he's been knocking on the door, to be honest. Remember that it's relatively hard. He's been unsettled a lot of times because of you know when he had a fantastic time at Nottingham Forest, then had to go back to United, never was able to just stay in the squad, and then he had to go back on loan and all of that. So um hes is we've always known about his qualities. He's just had a great season for Palace for me as well. And I really think when you look at the three goalkeepers that went to the Euros, Henderson, Pickford, and Ramsdale,
00:31:33
Wale Bakare
you know Bramstow, by the way, has still, for all the woes of Southampton, he's been good in a number of games.
00:31:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
season
00:31:40
Wale Bakare
But but When you look at it those three and you say who's had ah better season, not just their team, but also you know as an individual, and and I would say Henderson just edges it over Pickford. It would be the one I would be looking at, but there's there's a lot of other things that plays in that comes into you know the decision-making of managers, longevity of Pickford.
00:32:08
Wale Bakare
He tends to have enough. um ah The communication as a goalkeeper is you know is is one that's able to make a lot of noise, you know and you know scream at the defenders, whether to good effect, I don't know, but I really, really would wouldn't be surprised if Anderson gets an opportunity as England's number one on the Thomas Tuchel.
00:32:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
is
00:32:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, as you say, Henderson's form has been so good this year that you'd think most years it would be almost a no-brainer to just pop him in.
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Actually, it's complicated a bit this year by the fact that that Pickford and Ramsdale have also quietly had really pretty good seasons. I think they've been more consistent than we've seen either of them for a while. um And so it's it's not an easy There's also James Trafford, I think, could come into consideration down at Burnley in the Championship.
00:33:05
Wale Bakare
you yeah
00:33:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Kept a ludicrous number of clean sheets. But I think there are a few things that could counting count in Henderson's favour with Tuchel. So, I mean, The first one is just Tuchel coming in opens up the possibility.
00:33:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
We know Southgate liked quite a stable team selection and rewarded his favourites for performances, specifically for England. You can imagine that's a blank slate with Tuchel. It's going to be a new system and temperamentally, I don't think Tuchel's the kind of man who's going to be sentimental about those kind of things. He's just going to pick whoever he thinks is best for job in the moment.
00:33:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I guess the thing that other people pointed tactically, and Southgate would sometimes mention, with Pickford is he is better than Henderson with his feet. He has got a really good launch on him.
00:34:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I guess it's a bit of a question of how important that is to Tuchel. A bit hard to assess that, I'd say, but but one thing I think could give...
00:34:12
Wale Bakare
you
00:34:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
a bit of hope to Henderson is that Tuchel obviously favoured Edouard Mendy heavily over Kepa when they were at Chelsea and that was the same kind of question of albeit much more extreme because at that point Kepa's shot stopping was the worst in Europe statistically for a while but the question was fundamentally between a goalkeeper is really competent at commanding his box, saving shots, and ah keeper who was weaker on those things, but good with his feet.
00:34:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he chose the more traditional keeper. So i think there's a yeah I think there's every chance that Henderson does come and take that number one spot.
00:35:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is all we have time for today. So thank you for joining me, Wiley.
