Introduction and International Break

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast, brought your ears by the Global Sports Podcast Network. It's the international break, which is why this is only our second pod of the week.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the time of recording, we're waiting with bated breath for Thomas Tuchel's England to capture the imaginations of a nation with a 1-0 home win over Albania. ah Struggling to contain his excitement alongside me today is Dan Sanna.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you, Dan?
00:00:39
Dan Tanner
I'm alright. This international break is absolute murder. Because we haven't had a game for oh ages. i It's like 10 days since we've had a game. So it's like, oh my god, what are we doing? We're just trying to find stuff to talk about. should we do a pod? Should we do a pod? This is getting a little bit much.

Thomas Tuchel's Impact on England

00:00:56
Dan Tanner
If this is what the off-season is going to be like, oh my god.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I should be excited for a new England manager. It does give it a bit more flavour my sensational breaks, but ah just think it's such hard games to assess how good it's going to be.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he's had no time with them and it's Albania and Latvia. It's just like

Crystal Palace Update: Mateta and Friedman

00:01:19
Dan Tanner
Exactly. and
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of a hard team to place.
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
imagine England will just sort like grind out a couple of, you know, either draw or win couple of fairly routine wins nothing electrifying and people will be questioning whether it's any different than it was on the south gate um
00:01:37
Dan Tanner
Yes, it's either going to be a ah boring 1-0 victory or we're just going to absolutely cream them. Just one way traffic.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
well
00:01:45
Dan Tanner
It's one way or the other when it comes to these ones.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
well like
00:01:48
Dan Tanner
it's It's England at the moment. It's like, yeah, we're either going to beat them 4-0 and just cruise because we'll put out a first team or we'll just make life difficult for ourselves and get a 1-0 victory over a team that, well, we really should be cruising past.
00:02:01
Dan Tanner
So, um and yeah, Tuchel's just going to get it in the neck from day one. So, um yeah, nothing's going to be happening.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really hard for somebody to talk about football game.
00:02:08
Dan Tanner
We're England fans. We're never happy.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, anyhow, we're not here today to talk about England. We are here to talk about the far superior Crystal Palace. ah Specifically, we are going to talk about John-Fleep Matetti's first interview since his ear met the outstretched boot of Ralph Macchio in the FA Cup, Dougie Friedman's exit as sporting director, and the dangerous Daniel Munoz. So...
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
so On Mateta, title the book I'm writing at the moment. Have you listened to his interview?
00:02:46
Dan Tanner
unofficial autobiography.
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:48
Dan Tanner
He's not getting paid one way or the other for this.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think might write... like fever pitch is about Nick Hornby's love of Arsenal. Maybe my, my equivalent will be just, uh, uh, a kind of, uh, also biographical life story told through events in my love story with John Fulham Mateta.
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think that could be, that could be quite special. It would start, uh, uh, my current age and end of my current age, I suppose. But, um, if we leave it a few years, I'll start, I'll get the early chapters in now.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, But anyhow,
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
have you and listened to this interview with him, Dan?
00:03:29
Dan Tanner
Yeah, I watched it when you of brought up on the ah notes. I watched the for little over four minute interview, I think on Sky.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:03:36
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:03:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
What did you take away from it?
00:03:37
Dan Tanner
a
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
How do you think, don't know, Mateta was doing, feeling? Did it feel your confidence for his return?
00:03:44
Dan Tanner
He just looked absolutely like calm and collected. Just like a, just a very, very cool Frenchman. I was like, yeah, everything is fine. no worries. I just want to go out and play now. It's very much so that it was more the interviewer and the kind of presenter beforehand, trying to make something out of this. And it's like, oh, the, the, uh, classic surgeon didn't know where to start or all the, uh, abuse to the, like, Mateta didn't mention any of that is besides from the fact of, oh, look, he had a,
00:04:16
Dan Tanner
uh text message with him he apologized and himself like

Friedman's Departure and Replacement

00:04:20
Dan Tanner
essentially to but essentially for mateta is water under the bridge and just sort of to really kind of carry on um but yeah just sort of like yeah he just looked like cool calm collected like he would expect mateta to be and he just wanted to get back on the pitch as quickly as possible really um and he yeah looks pretty good pretty uh handy besides from the uh bandage over his ear I was kind of trying to remember in my head, like, is that the wrong ear? I couldn't remember which side he actually got hit in the... Oh, no, yep. had to look at the picture. Yep, that's the one that saw.
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but I agree. I think it was encouraging to see him just the same as usual, kind of bubbly, good-spirited self. um I think probably reassuring to hear that you saying he remembers everything, wasn't kind of concussed in the moment.
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we sort of knew that anyway. They said the scans were good and based on timeframe of recovery. But still, it's good to have some clarity on that. there It was just the damage to the ear that he sustained there, which was obviously significant enough in itself. But the fact that it isn't yet anything...
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
sort of longer tail or more substantial is good and yeah it was just great to see him smiling in good spirits not harboring any grudges as you would expect from Jean-Philippe it was yeah really nice to see him doing well one thing I noticed in the interview is that he said he'd been texting the doctor who looked after him every day with photos updates about how he is doing two questions on that for you dan a you think that's solicited or b and b uh do you think it is worth training as a plastic surgeon on the off chance you might get to meet john philima tessa
00:06:12
Dan Tanner
Oh, I think that's always a benefit of being a plastic surgeon. You might get to meet somebody famous. Like, oh, I get them in my phone book. I'm like, cool. Just go to party. I have insert celebrity here on my phone.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
In that vein, you're more likely to meet ah Palace figure like Simon Jordan than Jean-Philippe Mateta in the future. You're pretty lucky when Mateta...
00:06:33
Dan Tanner
Yeah, but i if they're solicited or not, I'm pretty sure it's,
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
As far as I can tell, the other one is the hair transfer.
00:06:38
Dan Tanner
If they're solicited or not, I'm pretty sure it's part of the consultancy. Just like, just recovery. Just make sure you're not picking at it or something. Because he's like when he's doing it, he's like saying, I really want to scratch my ear.
00:06:49
Dan Tanner
So it's like, you will have that band. He's like, I want to scratch. I want to scratch. No, I can't. let Don't make me put a code on you. Yeah.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah say It would have been funnier. but those guys isette Yeah, um I think you're right. that The only reason I question whether it's solicited is that he described, he said, we're friends now. I text him every day.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe he's giving him kind of updates. Hi, mate. How are you doing? Here's my mangled ear this morning.
00:07:17
Dan Tanner
How you doing? Here's a picture of my ear. you want the other side as well?
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I
00:07:20
Dan Tanner
Just for comparison's sake.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
hope his name is right here. is Yeah, well, I think I might um might consider picking up a scalpel if it gives me a chance of making John Filipe Mazzetto in the future, although do hope that he doesn't sustain any injuries like that again.
00:07:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Another point is that he did clarify that he's probably going to have to wear some kind of protective headwear for his next game when he's back in action.
00:07:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
What kind of headwear would you like to see him deploy, Dan? That's him. The scrum hat, some earmuffs.
00:08:00
Dan Tanner
I don't know. probably wind up Will being that scrum hat, the one that Peter Cech had to wear for years. But I don't how that really works when you're a centre forward because you kind of need to head the ball every now and again.
00:08:12
Dan Tanner
So the keeper, I get it.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll have break.
00:08:14
Dan Tanner
You're not really, you're not trying to get your head in the way, but with a centre forward, you kind of have to, or at least you're expected to do every now and again. So rugby scrum hat, I don't see being...
00:08:25
Dan Tanner
Working as well, but it's probably going be the thing that it's going to be. i don't think ear muscle work too well. They'll just fall off.
00:08:35
Dan Tanner
Just when he goes up for the celebration, they're just going to fly off his head. Yeah,
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
like be part the celebration i mean i whatever it is i want to see him put some personality into it whether it is emfs with um know how kind of
00:08:41
Dan Tanner
yeah exactly. You see somebody in the fan going, I've got it. On eBay five minutes later.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
you can get novelty headbands out, like the words, like birthday girl written on top or something like that. He can have a kind of boom.
00:09:06
Dan Tanner
of the committee I was going to say the cat ear ones, you know, like that all those e-girls have their little cat ears.
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. and
00:09:13
Dan Tanner
but
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:14
Dan Tanner
Pink and sparkly.
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can elf's ears maybe? I think there are lot of options for Jean-Philippe here.
00:09:21
Dan Tanner
There are plenty of options. and
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, either way, I'm sure whatever he's got on is not going to inhibit his performance. Damper his enthusiasm. sure we're going to see John Felipe Mateta back at his best with all of his usual vavavoom when Palace take Fulham in a couple of weeks' time.
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're just going have quick break now for a word from our sponsor before going into discussion about Doogie Friedman.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
The biggest Palace news this week is surely that having been sporting director since 2017, Dougie Freeman is leaving Palace. He looks set to move to Saudi Arabia, meaning the man that will have freed himself from basic civil liberties and the spending constraints imposed by Steve Parrish.

Daniel Munoz: Versatility and Goal Threat

00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
How important has Freeman been to Palace establish themselves as a Prem side, Dan?
00:10:58
Dan Tanner
Well, I would say he'd been sort of insanely important. He was one of the driving forces of keeping Palace going very sort of during that sort of administration period. Like he was the one sort of that I think even Parish actually part of the negotiations would try and keep him at Palace as long as he could because he was just so good at sort one sort of advertising Palace too fat to the players like they were trying to get. So like,
00:11:25
Dan Tanner
with, and at the time you've got remember this was on a shoestring budget. Like these were players of a couple of thousand here and there free agents on short-term deals just to try and keep, keep going.
00:11:36
Dan Tanner
And with, with a lot of perseverance, et cetera, and sort negotiating and just sort of general charm, managed to sort of build a team within a couple of years that got promoted.
00:11:48
Dan Tanner
And basically the rest is history really. um but he's also been really good at finding, ah players in the championship, like sort of players that are sort of just slightly too good to be playing in that league.
00:12:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:12:04
Dan Tanner
It's been a sort of formula and a style that a lot of the premiership teams have tried to emulate and tried to copy with varying degrees of success. You can sort see like the likes of Villa and Leicester getting Oli Watkins and Vardy from the lower leagues has worked out.
00:12:22
Dan Tanner
Palace did that not exactly first, but so earlier with Dwight Gale, we got a great center forward, at least at the championship level. He was really good. um And so things like that. He just managed to keep the club going bit further on, a bit further on, and being able to find really good deals that didn't break the bank.
00:12:42
Dan Tanner
So him going to Saudi Arabia, I'm not sure how that's going to work because they have essentially unlimited funds as it stands at the minute.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:12:51
Dan Tanner
We don't know how long this league is going to last and in at the at his current state because uh you remember any uh football history buffs will remember that china tried this a while ago and it kind of collapsed under its own weight so it's only a matter of time we'll see what happens but uh yeah him going to Saudi Arabia is a bit weird but is this better than what i think i saw some rumors earlier in the sort of the year little after christmas where man united and newcastle were kind of
00:13:22
Dan Tanner
buying for him. So it's like, at least he's not in another premiership team a minute, at least as that, but it's Duke.
00:13:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, particularly.
00:13:30
Dan Tanner
So, um, yeah, he's a guy's been backwards and forwards with palace for ages. So club legends club icon. So, uh, well, wish him all the best, but the doors always open, dude.
00:13:42
Dan Tanner
The door is always open. but
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
You certainly don't want him going to... United, who are eyeing up Palace's perennial 12th place spot. That would feel like a real direct rival switch now. ah But I think you're right. I think it's is's very important to say, as you did there, Dan, that the team that got promoted the Premier in the first place, really, he built the spine of that in administration, pretty much, has as Palace manager.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he deserves massive credit for that, as well as his current tenure as sporting director and the great acquisitions that he's made, particularly of young players like Elise, Adam Wharton, and generally other shrewd signings like Mateta and you could say Sang and Munoz this year.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's clearly got a really good eye for undervalued undervalued or high potential players and that probably more so than anything to do with the head coaches or managers has been the consistent thread that's kept Palace comfortable in the Prem for a real long while now.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um so it will certainly be missed. What kind of character... Would you like to see him replaced with the sporting director? I'm not asking for names because ah this isn't the kind of business of football podcast, but and what what what sort of traits are you hoping to see from whoever comes in to take the mantle?
00:15:15
Dan Tanner
I probably would kind of go for sort of the same traits that he thought of really, because that's the kind of ah club we are. We are sort of relatively what you probably even consider like a community club.
00:15:28
Dan Tanner
We are the only kind of one around South London. It's all about so South London players and so bringing up of guys from around round this bit, sort of Croydon so so forth.
00:15:41
Dan Tanner
So and somebody that actually, no one's a nosy area, but kind of at least appreciates the talent that is around, um, and be able to sort of be able to kind of promote the youth academy as well, just as I'll go through that from time to time as well with the, uh, youth development teams and things like that. So, but also somebody that can actually find a deal as well. I'm not, so I would completely disregard the championship.
00:16:08
Dan Tanner
But you have to find ones that are of a Premier League standard the or that are cost effective. Because, well, we are sort of definitely a mid-table team.
00:16:21
Dan Tanner
We are not one pushing for Europe, at least not yet. Unless we do stuff like Forest have been doing. I don't know how they've done that. They're just cheating, I think, at this point. ah They've got the cheat code to the Premiership.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd like to have a few financial fair pay slap on the wrist as far as to be fair.
00:16:35
Dan Tanner
Yeah. Yeah. Uh, so, um, so it's definitely what is sort of be able to keep sustain it sustainable, really, uh, not to sort of go and get the new flashy player to sort of find players that fit the system rather than just, yeah, let's just go and blow a load of money on, uh, try and get a guy that's gonna sell shirts.
00:16:56
Dan Tanner
Let's just get somebody, so guys that will be a real asset. And even to a point of doing that with, probably with the likes of Eze and Gehi, with the possibility of possibly moving them on to keep the, essentially the conveyor belt going.
00:17:12
Dan Tanner
So those would be kind of the traits I'd be looking for. So very much the keeping the community spirit alive and be able to find sort of really good sort cheapy deals that fit the system.
00:17:25
Dan Tanner
Kind of the same way that
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:26
Dan Tanner
Brighton and Brentford have kind of been doing just getting guys that just fit the system. That's all really need to do.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I i think you're spot on. it's pretty hard to find an exact kind like-for-like replacement for Freeman. I don't know of any other club, um any club other than, that kind of comes near to Palace, really, in terms of their ability to spot talent, specifically in the Championship, in the secondary English football.

Maintaining Palace's Performance Post-Departures

00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But really the important thing is his eye for talent and recruitment and ability to identify players that can be developed, can be sold on for profit later and and keep the club sustainable and ah good instincts of kind of how long to sit on a player for and when to actually let them go without you completely destroying the squad.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And also, I think it's very important that whoever it is has a kind of vaguely aligned priorities and vision or at least willingness to work with um Oliver Glessner because so we We all think he's a really good coach doing a great job and would like him stay around the Palace for as long as possible, really.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And his contract doesn't last that long. They're going to be talking about an extension soon. So whoever comes in has to be someone who gives him confidence um and can work well with him.
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of the names being kicked about at moment, it does sound like that's the kind of profile... that Palace are looking for. You mentioned Brentford there. Their technical director, Lee Dykes has been mentioned a name.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So has Middlesbrough's Kieran Scott. I think hopefully what you basically want is as much of a continuation of the same style as possible, think, given how well it's worked Palace.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, that like really is a priority. It's just not necessarily a business or corporate type, somebody really knows their football and how to spot a talent in there. I think players already have...
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
people are shrewd about the business dealings can handle that side of things. What I need is the yeah real recruitment expert and that is who the kind of character that I would hope would come in to replace him.

Munoz's International Performance with Colombia

00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We just have another quick break now for a word from our other sponsors, Zencaster, and then we'll wrap up by talking about big Daniel Munoz.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace players don't just form the spine of the England team, they also make up the best part of the national team for the largest Spanish-speaking country in South America, a Colombia side that can best be described as Daniel Munoz, Jefferson Lerma, the Nueve planks of wood.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Munoz didn't have his best day yesterday. Colombia were defeated to won by Brazil, with Munoz bringing Vinicius Junior down to consider a penalty from which Brazil opened scoring.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't want to focus on that though, Dan. Being more positive, I want to put a specific argument to you, which is that despite being a right-back, Daniel Munoz may have become Palace's second biggest goal for it.
00:21:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's currently third on goals in all competitions, joint third for Palace this season with five. puts him joint with Eze. Saar is comfortably in second with eight and obviously Jonathan Mateta well out in front.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Since the turn of the year though, Munoz and Saar tied on three apiece. Eze has one. The argument for why Munoz is the biggest threat is probably that Yes, Saar has more goals, but with him, it's sort of like one in every four games, Palace come up against an open side who play a high line and then he looks like he could score seven.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the other three games, he's quite quiet. Whereas Daniel Munoz, I think, in both those open end-to-end games and more congested ones where Palace have more possession,
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
finds those pockets his runs are very clever and always looks like he might be able to notch one in um so what do you think about dan could he be palace's second biggest f threat in front of goal despite being a right back or is that am i stretching it a bit
00:22:40
Dan Tanner
I don't know about goal threat, but definitely threat. I think he could probably just take away that goal bit. Mainly the other thing, just like talking to some of the other guys when we're doing like the crossover, but especially like Man United and stuff, that are trying to do this wingback system.
00:22:56
Dan Tanner
Munoz is like one of the few players in the league that can actually do it properly.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:00
Dan Tanner
It's the actual threat. um Everybody else is trying to convert either a winger into that position or trying to push a fullback and they either don't have the pace, they don't have the crossing or whatever.
00:23:12
Dan Tanner
But Munoz kind of... I don't know about but the crossing. Low crosses I think he's pretty good at.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:17
Dan Tanner
The high one's not quite so accurate.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:23:20
Dan Tanner
But he's definitely got the pace and he's got some of the tricks. So, yeah, he's not going to get pushed off the ball too often. He's definitely...
00:23:32
Dan Tanner
But yeah, as a threat, I think he is. But goal scoring, since he got his first one, he's got a few in now. So yeah, you can't ignore him.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean The floodgates are open now. think
00:23:43
Dan Tanner
Let's say that much. You can't ignore him as a threat. But I probably think Sars may be closer to the actual goal threat.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think the statistics would agree with you, really.
00:23:55
Dan Tanner
Yeah. As he is a forward, he's probably supposed to be doing that because Enketiah definitely isn't at the moment. He's starting to, but it took him a while. um And kind of after watching that Ipswich game of how long it took us not just to get a goal, but the winning goal.
00:24:12
Dan Tanner
um Yeah, some of these guys need to start, I don't know, picking up some scoring boots or something just because without Mateta, we seem to be sort of a loss, really.
00:24:23
Dan Tanner
There needs to be another option. not just relying on one guy to get the goals. So I think

Conclusion and Future Teasers

00:24:29
Dan Tanner
these guys need to start picking up the pace a little bit. ah Eze probably should probably try and get a couple more, or at least couple more assists.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
they
00:24:38
Dan Tanner
Nketiah and Saab probably should try and get some as well.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I always have simply that has to do so much kind of deeper.
