Hello, welcome to the 10th episode of Eli Studio Sports. Today we will be discussing the MLB World Series.

World Series Recap: Dodgers vs. Rays

00:00:09
Speaker
It is finally here and three games have passed already. And then we will be talking about the Big Ten, their football season starting today.
00:00:19
Speaker
And actually it started yesterday after Wisconsin crushed, Illinois 45 seven. So we're going to start off with the world series. Um, game one was all the Dodgers, especially once you got to, uh, the fifth inning, he was already six to one by the end of that. You know, they did a very good job of scoring runs and not letting glass now get in their way. They were able to pull them up decently early. And even though.
00:00:49
Speaker
a lot of people doubt Kershaw in the playoffs. He had one of his best, in my opinion, playoff performances of his career.

Kershaw's Playoff Performance & Legacy

00:01:00
Speaker
And actually, I think that he, a lot of people say he's going to make the Hall of Fame. I actually disagree with that. And because of his playoff performances, but I think that this time he's been able to beat the odds and pitch well in this World Series game and Even with the pressure on him, he did his job and the Ray's just going to do anything about it.
00:01:27
Speaker
They're a very good fastball-hitting team, so are the Dodgers, but, you know, Kershaw's off-speed pitches are probably the best in the league, if not top. In game two, ah I want to give a shout-out to Brandon Lau. Two home runs. Everyone thought that'd get him out of a slump.
00:01:50
Speaker
almost did but just couldn't because ah The Dodgers are or I mean, sorry because in game three the Dodgers just shut them down and all thanks to Walker Beeler's 10 K's and they won that game but back to game two ah Brandon Lau two home runs coming into that he was around 105 in the postseason, but then he just crushed as a ball and to get his second home run of the postseason gets one later in the game too so he did a very nice job hitting in that game. I think that Brandon Lau is their best hitter even better than Randy Rosarina has just been this postseason that he just has not been able to do much but
00:02:39
Speaker
I think Brandon Lau is their star. A lot of people say they don't have one. If it's not him, it's Blake Snell. If it's not those two, it's Tyler Glass now. But in this game, they all look at Brandon Lau. Every fan, they look at Brandon Lau. Oh, two home

Rays' Strategy & Bullpen Analysis

00:02:54
Speaker
runs. He's out of it. Slump. But one guy that did very well in this game is Blake Snell. And I think they pulled him to her.
00:03:05
Speaker
He pitched four and two thirds innings. He only had two hits off him. Uh, they had only two earned runs. The problem was the four walks thing and he's been walking a lot of players lately, but then the bullpen is phenomenal. I think in Nick Anderson coming out, you know, 1.1 innings pitched and he only gave up one run and The only two bullpen pitchers in that game that gave up a run were Nick Anderson and Peter Fairbanks. But I think the thing about this raised bullpen is they had three main guys. It's Nick Anderson, Peter Fairbanks, and Diego Castillo. Those guys are all really good. So, you know, Diego Castillo, he's an off speed pitcher. Nick Anderson, he's more of a,
00:03:57
Speaker
You know, he pitches both, but Peter Fairbanks is like a fastball pitcher. So if you, I think what I would do in game four is, you know, start putting in. So you can put in your starter, you know, and then you can leave him in there. That's fine. But then you can put in a guy like Peter Fairbanks. And then when they're so used to that fastball, it's crazy. Then you go up against Diego Castillo and then you're like, Oh, dang.
00:04:27
Speaker
because you're starting it way slower and you're way in front of it. I think that's the strategy that it should be when you get to the raised bullpen. I think that's exactly what they um Kevin Cash would do, but if that's not what he does, then just keep your starting pitcher in there because Really, no one else besides Nick Anderson does too much in that bullpen. So in John Curtis, he's pretty good. He came in in game three, but in the playoffs, he's been struggling a little bit. Barnes hit a homerun off him and you know, he's he's done a fine job, though. So we go to game three now. It is six to two Dodgers final score. Also, game two, the Rays won six four, but six to two Dodgers win this game.
00:05:14
Speaker
So, why did they win exactly? Well, Charlie Morden. It's basically the only reason. um Charlie Morden is more of a slower pitcher, and the Dodgers absolutely took advantage of that. So they got two quick outs, Willy Damas makes some beautiful backhand G-Mancho splits, they get another out after that, very quick. Charlie Morden looks like he's gonna have a good day, wait.
00:05:41
Speaker
Justin Turner bringing that momentum over to the l LA Dodgers hitting a big homerun over the fence and then they just scored two runs in both third and fourth inning and I want to give credit to Barnes Austin Barnes he Well, let's just say he's not the best here. He's actually a really good hitter Just doesn't get too much credit because that team is stacked. So actually I think that um That bunt that he had was phenomenal. I think it was in the fourth inning. It was a really good bind, you know, runner on third runners on first and third and.
00:06:20
Speaker
you know, I was right on the first base side and you know, and she may enjoy, you know, I could have gone to home, but if he's safe, you're risking first and second with ah only one or two out. So, or one out. Sorry. So it's, I think that was a perfectly executed bump by Austin Barnes. So I'm giving credit for that. And then later he gets a big home run for the LA daughters. I know they were up five one, but I think that was a really big home run.
00:06:50
Speaker
And then Walker Bueller my man he he's out of Vanderbilt and I mean this kid is amazing He might have the best fastball in the MLB right now. It's close There's a lot of guys that have a chance at having the best one But right now it's Walker Bueller and actually I think Charlie Morton has one of the best off speed pitches one of the best but not the best just like Charlie Morden with his er, sorry, Walker Bueller with his fastball. So I think what

Road to World Series: Rays vs. Dodgers

00:07:24
Speaker
the Rays have to do first, they obviously have to win game four or else probably done four in this World Series. I don't think that um they can, ah sorry,
00:07:40
Speaker
come back from 3-1 because it's they haven't had to come back. They haven't had to do any of any comebacks. They were they had they had a. Favorable matchup in the first round against the Blue Jays. I know they have huge in review, but still favorable for them. They're a very good team then. The Yankees, I mean they're a very good team, goes to the maximum amount of games and for a semifinal DS matchup and.
00:08:15
Speaker
They do a phenomenal job fighting. They win the final game two to one. brus Mike Brassau, he's not home run on Chapman, my man. How do you hit a home run off Chapman? That's my only question for Mike Brassau. And then they play the Astros, you're up 3-0. Oh, it's gonna be a sweep. It's gonna be a five-game series at most. But no, the Astros fight hard.
00:08:41
Speaker
They bring it to seven games and they're trying to prove that without their cheating scandal, they can still be a good team and I don't think they had to cheat. You know, the the frustrating thing is that they didn't have to cheat. They're still a good team. I don't think they would have won the World Series, but I don't think they had to cheat necessarily.
00:09:02
Speaker
but it's actually frustrating when you look at it because like you see all the talent they have this team Jose Altuve I know he had a ton of errors but his hitting was very nice in that series Carlos Correa and beautiful plays at shortstop and he's a very good hitter he'll walk off I think game five or six and You know, it's hard to beat a team like that, but the Rays are just so talented and they can do it. So it went to seven games actually. Um, they were one of, they were one of two teams that were down 3-0 and forced a game seven. The other team was a 2004 ALCS Red Sox. They went on to win that series and they also went on to win the World Series.

MLB Financial Dynamics: Dodgers vs. Rays

00:09:50
Speaker
So I think that,
00:09:53
Speaker
The thing about the Rays is that they just don't have to come back. They've been leading all the series besides the series against the Yankees. I was back and forward one, although they were down 1-0, but that's not too hard to come back from. It's still very hard when you play a talented team like the Yankees. So I think the Rays have to heat up their hitting. I know you have so much talent. Everyone knows that. like Look, you have G-Man Choi, and you have Randy or Rosarina, probably, in my opinion, the best rookie performance in the playoffs in MLB history, in my opinion. um I mean, you could say Derek Jeter's performance, but I'm going with Randy. Brandon Lau, he's been hitting pretty well lately. Well, not lately. He's been in a slump, but
00:10:51
Speaker
starting to get out of it. Um, I also have Kevin Kiermaier who I know he's injured, but he had a foul ball that off the bat, 111 miles an hour it would have been a line drive home run if it's just, he was just a little bit later on it. But, uh, and he still would have been very early on that ball, but like, and then you have Mike Zunino who You know, he's not the best at connecting with the ball, but when he connects, it's big power hits. It's not impaled singles because um it's not, oh, he just got a single that just like blooped down and fell. You know, it's just not Mike Zunino. It's, oh my, that's a 450 foot home run. Maybe not 450 feet, but he hits a bunch of home runs. When he connects, it's big power.
00:11:47
Speaker
um So they have a bunch on the hitting. They also, uh, Yandy Diaz, he's pretty good to me. So it's a good team, you know, it's talented. It's just the Dodgers are stacked right now. And Mookie Betts has done nothing but helped, you know, got Mookie, Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger, uh, Max Muncie. He got a ton on that team. So the GM on the Dodgers is doing great.
00:12:12
Speaker
You know, and the thing about baseball, you don't have a salary cap, so you can go get whoever you want. And as long as you have enough money for it, like, you're doing good because you can get anyone, basically. And the Rays, actually, they are the third, they have the third lowest payroll in the MLB.

Big Ten Football Highlights & Predictions

00:12:30
Speaker
They still make the World Series. They have basically no superstars. Actually, they're Kevin Cash, he's better win Coach of the Year, or else, who does win? I mean,
00:12:42
Speaker
Dusty Baker first year. No one's cheating or I think it's Kevin Cash. Anyways, we're going to move on to the Big 10 football baby. So yesterday, Wisconsin beat Illinois. No surprises about that. They're number 14 may or may not move up, but this is a game that NFL scouts are going to watch next. It's Nebraska at number five, Ohio State, the Buckeyes.
00:13:12
Speaker
in the horseshoe playing at 11 a.m. on Fox. i I believe there will not be fans at this one. And Justin Fields. And i'm um'm I'm just saying this because, all right, the Cowboys, they're in a tough situation. They just got a first round pick out of the Texans. And the Texans are struggling. And here you go, you're watching them and whoa, this might become like a top five pick.
00:13:39
Speaker
And what if field is still available? Do you take in? That's my question about that. You know, that's a really big opportunity for Dallas. And if not, maybe you can take Trevor Lawrence. I don't know. I'm just saying that. Just point that out. But I mean, and the Cowboys aren't doing well either. They can get two top eight, nine, 10 picks. And you know, you're set for the next season. The only thing about that is I like their defense is giving up a ton. So you might want to get two defensive.
00:14:08
Speaker
dogs out there, but, you know, who knows. But Rutgers, Michigan State, actually I'm going to pick these games. So Ohio State over Nebraska, 35, nothing. I, Justin Fields is not going to have to play in the second half. They will score seven in that, in the second half. Michigan State over Rutgers, 28 to 10. I think that Michigan State is just better and I don't, Rutgers has never been very good at football. They, I don't think they're considered for their, they're known for their sports. And then number eight, Penn State going to Indiana at Memorial Stadium. And actually this one's tougher than it sounds. Okay. Penn State you're saying, Oh my goodness, this is a very good team. How is this so hard?
00:15:01
Speaker
But you know what? First, Micah Parsons, he opted out. They had plenty of guys drafted. I'm still going to go with Penn State either way, though. I'm going 28 to 7. I don't think Indiana has a very nice ah vari good offense, but you we'll see. Then, Iowa at Purdue.
00:15:23
Speaker
i will I know they've lost guys in drafts, but I was a very, very, very good team. I think they're going to win this one 42 to three. Then we have probably the best, uh, big 10 game. And this one's going to need some exclamation. Minnesota number 21 going up against number 18 Michigan. So you have a Rashad Bateman if you're Minnesota and he might be the difference between this one.
00:15:53
Speaker
Michigan, the only reason why I'm not picking them, I'm picking Minnesota to win 23 to 21. But the only reason why I'm picking Minnesota is because Michigan, they've known for their defense, but they have never, ever had an offense, ever. They're just not known for that and they don't do anything about it. You know, they don't go get someone. And then Maryland at Northwestern,
00:16:21
Speaker
this one, no big guy, no big players that everyone knows, but I'm going to go with Maryland, 20, uh, 28, sorry, 28 to 21. So the biggest game to me is Ohio state, Nebraska. And no, I pick, but I think that Nebraska potential on the scene, they're very good and they got a better coach. So,
00:16:50
Speaker
I mean, I think they're actually better than a lot of people think. I already said that, but you know, the big 10 is going to have a lot of surprises here. They've not had that much practice. And I think that's going to be the difference. You know, look.
00:17:06
Speaker
Minnesota, Michigan, like none of those teams have practice. So I don't know if this pick is right because i you know you can't watch the practice and you can't see who's doing better. So I'm just saying that like maybe Ohio State comes back rusty. you know Adrian Martinez for Nebraska as a quarterback, he's a good quarterback. I'm saying it. you know He's a very good

Randy Arozarena's Postseason Impact

00:17:30
Speaker
quarterback. But you know when you match up the quarterbacks today, football,
00:17:36
Speaker
comes down to who has the better quarterback. And to me, this one's kind of obvious. Adrian Martinez, he's a good quarterback, but I mean, Justin Fields is the best quarterback in college football. No competition. Some people say Trevor Lawrence. That's not true. So one thing that I have to say, what which teams aren't playing this weekend, the big ones Florida, another week postponed. They were scheduled to play Missouri. That game has been postponed. And last weekend they were going to play LSU, the Tigers. That one was also postponed. So now I'm just going to say something and then we're going to wrap it up. So this is an MLB, but Randy and Rosarina. If the raised one in the world series, obviously he's going to be the MVP, but
00:18:32
Speaker
He is tied for most home runs by anyone in a postseason. I'm very happy for him because you know what? He's eight. That's a huge amount. And I know there's four rounds this year, all that, but he's been one of the best, in my opinion, and not even just for rookies. I think this has been top five playoff performance of all time. And I know of all those Babe Ruth performances that like no one goes back to watch because they're so stuck in today's game, but I think that Randy Rosarena is going to become a superstar and he is, they're starving my feeler and no one saw this coming. He is going to be like, he's the surprise but player in the playoff of the year for sure. He had COVID. He, he only played for the last three and a half weeks of the season.

Conclusion & Listener Appreciation

00:19:28
Speaker
He had seven home runs.
00:19:30
Speaker
It's crazy. He's doing phenomenal. And no one saw it because they're so watching. Oh, and they're forgetting that there's a team. So they're like, or the Yankees going to make the playoffs. My team might not have to face them. They're in the playoffs for sure. But they're not just because they're like, Oh, the Rays already made the playoffs. So, and then they see, but no one's watching Randy until now. And you know what, including the postseason and the regular season, he has had,
00:19:59
Speaker
15 home runs. Very nice. So thank you so much for listening to this episode of Eli's Studio Sports. We'll see you in the next one.
