Hello, welcome to the eighth episode of Eli's Studio Sports. Today we will be talking about college football and the NFL of this week. Then we're going to move to the NBA that the series of the conference finals have been pretty good to start off with.

Debate: Big Ten Season Start

00:00:19
Speaker
And we're going to talk about the big 10. They have a, they are going to start their season on October 24th. So that will be fun to watch, but was

College Football Highlights

00:00:28
Speaker
it the right decision? So,
00:00:31
Speaker
First, let's start off with college football this weekend. We're going to talk about the games that the ranked opponents played. OK, so we're going to start off with number 25. Pittsburgh plays Syracuse. They did not have too hard of a time there. They won the game 21 to 10.
00:00:49
Speaker
And actually the score at halftime was 10 to seven or 14 to 10. So it was close at that time. But then in the third quarter Pittsburgh got a huge insurance touchdown and then fourth quarter was scoreless. So Pittsburgh was able to pull away with that one. Although the question is, will they be able to stay ranked after a close one? Um,
00:01:14
Speaker
I don't know. That'll be tough to stay ranked, especially considering their number 25 instead of number 10 or something. Now moving on to number 13, Cincinnati. They played the Austin Peak Governors. They had fun with that one, scored 55 points, and they won the game 55-20.
00:01:37
Speaker
Austin P actually outscored Cincinnati 14 to 13 in the fourth quarter obviously Cincinnati did not put in their best players at that time because they did not want them to get injured and possibly lose a lot of games because Some of their best players could have gotten out But that did not make a difference they still won by a lot and And then we're going to move on to number 19. L.A. Lafayette, they had a hard time playing Georgia State. They went to overtime. They won by three. And actually, this was a very good game, but. Like in OT, the so Georgia State got a field goal and then Louisiana just had to score a touchdown. So in overtime, you always have to score like
00:02:33
Speaker
That's the only way you'll have a chance to win the game. Like last year, or two years ago, I lost to you in Texas A&M played. I don't think in any of the overtimes a team scored a field goal until the last one. Actually, no, the last one they both scored a touchdown. So, the reason why the Georgia State Panthers lost is because they only made a field goal. And that's okay, you know, they can learn from it and Louisiana Lafayette, they're a good team. So all they have, all Louisiana has to do is play better than they did in that game. Like they're probably not going to stay ranked after that, but they can get ranked again. So it'll be okay for them. Um, moving on. This next game was a great one. Um, Tulsa and Oklahoma and number 11, Oklahoma state. Oh, this was phenomenal game.
00:03:33
Speaker
final score was 16 to 7 and actually by the time three quarters were over Tulsa led 7 to 3 but a 13 point fourth quarter um did the trick for Oklahoma State so they did pretty good defensively actually both teams did but the reason why Oklahoma State struggled so much is because Chubba Hubbard did not do very well. Um, he had 27 carries in only 93 yards. His streak of 11 games of a hundred rushing yards has been snapped and he averaged 3.4 yards per carry, which is definitely not what you would expect to see from Chubba Hubbard, but he can improve after this game.
00:04:28
Speaker
He's gonna get drafted this year probably, so it's okay. He can just learn from this game and move on. Moving on, it's number seven. Notre Dame against South Florida. They had a fun time playing this one. Shut out the Bulls. Also scored 35 points in one half. That's amazing. They also scored 52.
00:04:58
Speaker
points overall. And there were fans at this game. There were also fans at the Oklahoma State game. So that's just how it went for that game. Also, I think that Notre Dame, I think they have a potential Heisman Trophy winner. Now, I'm not saying he will. I just say I'm just saying he could like I think Ian Book could win the Heisman Trophy and I'm not saying he will.
00:05:28
Speaker
Next it's number 23 Appalachian State versus the Marshall Thundering herd. And surprise, here's the first ranked loss of this weekend as Marshall beats Appalachian State 17-7. Wow, like Marshall starting off 2-0 beating Eastern Kentucky. Well that's no surprise but then you look at them beating Appalachian State wow like Appalachian State I'm gonna be honest like I don't think Appalachian State should ever be ranked like the last couple years like last year Appalachian State they played North Carolina they won by three and I get Sam how it was phenomenal quarterback and he did great in that game but
00:06:24
Speaker
Are you serious? Like, Appalachian State, why are they ranked? They're definitely not going to be ranked after this game. And I don't think they're going to be ranked it by the time the season ends, or by the time, like, I don't think they're going to be ranked at all this year. That's my point. Now we have number 14 UCF. They play Georgia Tech. Fans at the Georgia Tech game in Georgia. So,
00:06:54
Speaker
UCF crushes them 49-21 and they scored the game's last 21 points. So it was 28-21, but then they just broke open and won the game. Dylan Gabriel four passed for 417 yards, four touchdowns and one pick. He did great in my opinion and Even rushing, he got 30 yards. I know he had eight carries, but still a very good job on Georgia Tech side. The quarterback did not do very well. He had 18 completions out of 36 attempts, so he completed 50%. That's not very good at all. 244 yards, one touchdown and two picks. Not what you want to see as a Georgia Tech fan.
00:07:54
Speaker
Now moving on to number one, Clemson playing unranked Citadel and they just crushed them. Um, look, the quarterbacks for the Citadel did not do very well. so Like, okay. So starter Brandon Rainey, he was two for nine with 38 yards. So,
00:08:22
Speaker
The average 29 or 19 yards per completion, which is very good, but he only completed two out of nine, which is not fair. Good relay web one for one with 38 yards. That's very good. I don't know why they didn't keep him in there. And then 0 for one five Jalen Adams, but the rushing game. Like not good at all. 12 carries and 50 yards for Jalen Adams.
00:08:52
Speaker
Um, and Nick and ones, they had 11 carries and 20 yards. He averaged 1.8 yards per carry. You can't see that. Um, and then the, actually the guy with the most, the highest average only had one carry with three Campton. So maybe they should have given, given him a little bit more carries.
00:09:16
Speaker
You never know, but then c Clemson on the other hand, Trevor Lawrence, eight for nine, but you have to listen to this. So he had eight completions, but he also had 168 yards and eight completions. I get they were only playing the Citadel, but that is amazing. And he had three touchdowns, no interceptions, no interceptions at all in this game.
00:09:43
Speaker
by Clemson and then Travis Etienne 8 carries 68 yards an average of 8.5 per carry so great job overall by Clemson they did not score at all in the second half obviously it's because they did not put in Trevor Lawrence just putting guys like DJ Uya Gallela and Hunter Helms and Tysum Fomakonch so They did pretty well in that game just didn't put in the best quarterbacks they have in the second half. They did not put in their Heisman trophy candidate and Trevor Lawrence and then the last ranked.
00:10:26
Speaker
Opponent game was ranked opponent versus ranked opponent a Sunday night football or Saturday night football game. It's the number 17 Miami Hurricanes versus the number 18 Louisville Cardinals So number 17 and number 18 face-off sounds like it'd be a good game there's a lot of hype coming into it about obviously Dior a king who did Not bad, but he didn't do great either. 18 completions out of 30 attempts, 325 yards, three touchdowns. So not bad, but it's not what you'd expect from him, but the rushing game. Oh my goodness. So Cameron Harris, nine carries, aim 134 yards, an average of 14.9 per attempt and one touchdown. So he did a very good job rushing.
00:11:22
Speaker
And then the rest of the rushing did not do very well. Um, but receiving though, 75 yard throw man, Jalen Knighton caught it one reception, 75 yards, an average of 75 and one touchdown.
00:11:41
Speaker
So good job by your King then Louisville Malik Cunningham 26 for 36 370 yards three touchdowns and a pick.
00:11:54
Speaker
And then no one else really did great. I mean, the rushing game, JV on Hawkins had 27 carries, 164 yards, 6.1 average, one touchdown. It's not great, but he still did pretty well. oh And then the final score was 47-34 Miami wins. So now we're going to move on

NFL Predictions

00:12:16
Speaker
to the NFL as the Giants take on the Bears.
00:12:20
Speaker
We're gonna do picks for every game. I think the Bears are gonna lose this game actually. I think the Giants could do pretty well. They almost beat the Steelers last week. Only lost by 10, so I think the Giants can pull away with this one because the Bears did not do well at all last week against the Lions. I get they won by four, but still.
00:12:44
Speaker
Moving on, we have Rams versus Eagles. I do not think there's a question about this, and I think the Rams win this one. um Why? Because they have all the pieces at quarterback, Jared Goff, and then defensive leaves where it really shows off. um Jalen Ramsey, Aaron Donald on the same team. That's hard to stop or hard to get past. So next it's Falcons versus Cowboys. I think that the Cowboys are going to win this one. I think it could be close, but I think the Cowboys can pull away. Then the Panthers in the Buccaneers. Like actually, I don't know. This is a close one. Christian McCaffrey.
00:13:32
Speaker
Mike Evans, Tom Brady, Rob Ronkowski. I think it's going to be a close one. Both teams 0 and 1. The Panthers lost to the Raiders, which is not very well, but they do have Teddy Bridgewater starting. So I'm going to go with the Carolina Panthers to win this one. Next, we have 49ers versus Jets and I think this one's pretty obvious. The 49ers will probably win this one. Although the Jets did put up a very good fight in that game against the Bills. Sam Darnold did not too bad. LaVion Bell is like, you got to expect more from him. And obviously they missed Jamal Adams, Seattle. Obviously they took advantage of seeing Jamal Adams open and then just took him.
00:14:31
Speaker
Next we have Broncos versus Steelers. And let's just say this one's not going to be that good of a game, but I'm going Broncos here. Although it could be close. Some people would say Steelers. I don't necessarily disagree with that pick. Steelers are pretty good, but Juju Smith Schuster Rod, Ben Roethlismer. That's pretty good, but I think that Drew Locke is going to pull away.
00:15:01
Speaker
Do a good job, but I would not be shocked if the Steelers won. Moving on, it's Jaguars versus Titans. So that actually, Jaguars beat the Colts, beat Phillip Rivers, feature Hall of Famer.
00:15:18
Speaker
But I have to go with the Titans with this one. Ryan Tannenhill is going to do his job. I also do not believe the Jaguars are going to do very good. I think one guy that could make a difference, the rookie CJ Henderson, he did great, but Gardner Menchu also did very well for the Jaguars. So we'll see. Moving on, it's Lions Packers.
00:15:42
Speaker
I don't need to talk about this one very much. I think the Packers are going to win. Next is Bill's Dolphins. I wonder if we're going to see a little Tua in this one, but I still have to deal with the Bills. I think they're going to crush him. Tua might be named the starting quarterback sooner or later. Now, for now, it's probably Fitzgerald though.
00:16:05
Speaker
moving on it's vikings cold
00:16:08
Speaker
This is actually a good one, in my opinion, but I've gotta go Vikings. The Vikings and the Colts both 0 and 1, but the Vikings had to play the Packers. Tough game. Kirk Cousins only had 25 attempts, but Dalvin Cook just didn't do great. He still did fine, but the real rusher in that game was Alexander Madison. but They obviously had to give it more to Dalvin Cook, because he's probably the better player. Next, it's the football team, the Washington football team, which is a terrible name, against the Cardinals. so
00:16:54
Speaker
ah
00:16:57
Speaker
Cardinals are, both teams are 1-0. I think the Cardinals are going to win. I think Kyler Murray is going to do a good job today and he has that those receivers. I mean, like you can't go wrong with DeAndre Hopkins and Larry Fitzgerald on the same team. So I actually love this Arizona team. Adding DeAndre Hopkins might take them to the playoffs.
00:17:24
Speaker
Could take him to the Super Bowl. I'm not going to go that far, though. I do not think they can win the Super Bowl. Moving on, it's Ravens Texans. I think this is actually going to be a very good game, but I think the Texans are going to go 0-2. The Ravens are going to win this one. Moving on, it's Chiefs Chargers. I don't think there's any question that the Chiefs are going to win this one. Now it's the Sunday Night Football game. Patriots Seahawks.
00:17:54
Speaker
And some people could say Patriots, Cam Newton's still pretty good. But I think it's definitely Seahawks. Jamal Adams has been a huge addition. And then Russell Wilson. I mean, you can't go wrong with that. So Saints Raiders, obviously Saints. So that's the Monday Night

NBA Playoff Updates

00:18:15
Speaker
Football game. Now we're going to the NBA. Oh my goodness. Game three was a roller coaster. Gordon Hayward back.
00:18:25
Speaker
for The Celtics they won that game bit there's a flagrant on Jalen Brown at the end and Not a flake or two is just a flavor one, but that also made it a five-point game something around that and then that's when everyone thought whoo, maybe that he can win this one and But no, that's not the case. Jaylen Brown had 26.7 rebounds, five assists. Jason Tatum had 25 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Kemba Walker had 21.6 rebounds and two assists. And Marcus Smart had 20 points, four rebounds, and six assists. So those were the 20-point scores for the Celtics in game three for the Heat.
00:19:20
Speaker
They only had two and it was Bam Adebayo and Tyler Hero. Adebayo had 27 points, 16 rebounds, and one assist. That is phenomenal numbers. And then Tyler Hero had 22 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Obviously, I think this better. The Heat were still able to hold on. They were like close. But the Celtics still won the game.
00:19:50
Speaker
able to pull away and then the series is two to one Miami and then we go to the other side it's Nuggets Lakers it is currently one nothing LA and like the Lakers are gonna sweep them I think they're gonna win no problem because like the Nuggets don't have anything to compete let's compare the starters so point guard LeBron against point guard Jamal Murray as good as Jamal Murray is we all know who the better player is and it's obviously LeBron James. Now we have shooting guard Gary Harris or shooting guard Dan Green. It's close, but I think Danny Green is the better player.
00:20:46
Speaker
um And we have small forward Michael Porter against Kyle Kuzma. I think this one is close again But I think Kuzma is slightly a better player. We have Jeremy Grant versus Anthony Davis, I guess they call him the power forward and he should be the center anyways, but I Anthony Davis is way better. And then Nikola Jokic and Shavail McGree, McGee, that one's Nikola Jokic. So all the starters are better on the Lakers besides the center position. So I have to go with the Lakers sweeping them. So that's the story in the NBA. Also the Heaton, the Celtics, the Celtics, you know, they're way back in the series, but the frustrating thing is that they could have easily won.

Big Ten Challenges and COVID-19 Impact

00:21:43
Speaker
games one and two in game one they were up it at the end of the first quarter by eight then at the end of three they were also up by eight like uh what happened so uh actually not by eight by twelve actually at the end of three so i do not like it's just not going well for them then in game two oh my gosh The end of one, they were up by three. The end of two, halftime, were up by 13. They still lost. What happened? Okay, that is unacceptable if you're Brad Stevens. He even had to call a meeting for his leaders on his team, including Kemba Walker, Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, and Marcus Smart. so
00:22:38
Speaker
They did much better in game three holding on to leads. And now we'll talk about the Big Ten. They released their football schedule. They did announce that they'll be able to play starting October 24th. Weird thing is that some of the games they say they start at 7 a.m. like Michigan, Minnesota or Penn State, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue. That's just hilarious. But OK, look,
00:23:08
Speaker
Big 10. Okay. So we're going to start with some of the good teams schedules, see who their challenges are going to be. We're going to start off Minnesota. Your toughest challenge. They don't have to play Ohio state. So I would have to go with Wisconsin or else if, or else it could be Michigan, but I think Wisconsin is a little bit better. Moving on. It's Iowa.
00:23:37
Speaker
And their biggest challenge is probably Penn State. If not, it's Wisconsin. If not, it's Minnesota. Wisconsin's biggest challenge is probably... Oh man, they have a much easier schedule, but I'd have to go with Minnesota, if not Michigan. Next it is, next good team, Penn State. Their biggest challenge ah Ohio State for sure. There's no competition. I mean, besides Iowa, but I mean, it's hard to not be the hardest competition. Next, Michigan. Their toughest challenge every year is Ohio State. If not, then it's Penn State. Michigan State, I consider them a good team. Their toughest challenge is Ohio State, if not Penn, and then
00:24:36
Speaker
Penn State, obviously not Penn. Then Ohio State, their toughest challenge is Penn State. So that's the summary for the Big Ten. Their schedule is out. Some of the notable games obviously are very notable. um But Ohio State against Penn State. I think that's going to be the big 10 game of the year. I think that's going to be a phenomenal game and we'll see what happens. So thank you so much for listening to this episode of Eli Studio Sports. But before I let you guys go, I just want to point out Mike Norvell has tested positive for COVID-19. Whoa, that is sad. That is just not what you want if you are the coach. If you're then not the coach, the players like
00:25:27
Speaker
Now your coach has tested positive and you can't play. So it's hard and actually before we leave, I have to point out. So we're going to talk about is the big 10 decision a good decision or bad? I am going to go out of the way. So I'm just going to go from one to 10. I think it was a two. I get that they're playing outdoors and all that, but like,
00:25:58
Speaker
When you're watching college football this weekend, if you already watched the game like in the past two weeks, there has been no social distancing. They have been tackling each other nonstop. I get that's the point of football, but that's not how it that's not COVID friendly. I don't see how big 10 makes it work and unless of COVID cases go way down in the US. They've gone down, but not enough.
00:26:27
Speaker
And I think the Pac-12 has made a great decision of staying out of this, not following what the Big Ten did, and just stay calm. Just because one conference did, it doesn't mean they had to, too. And I think the best decision out of all of them has been by the Pac-12.

Top College Football Game Predictions

00:26:45
Speaker
And then I'm going to talk about what I think is going to be the best game in all of college football this year.
00:26:53
Speaker
And you guys might think I'm going to say Texas, Oklahoma and all that. But no, I think Georgia versus Florida is going to be the best game of this year by far. It's the number five, Florida versus number four, Georgia. I can't believe you're actually allowing fans. I'm pretty sure it's actually going to be at Georgia's actual stadium, which is sad, but.
00:27:17
Speaker
um I just like this is going to be a good one, like every year it's a good one. ah Kyle Trask at QB for them Gators and Then Georgia, I mean they have lost a ton Yandere Swift Jake from they still have a decent team or else they would not be number four So I'm interested to watch that game on November 7th If the season goes alright for college football, which I do not believe it will I just think there's nothing that could go right but who knows I
00:27:52
Speaker
So thank you so much for listening to this episode of Eli Studio Sports. We'll see you in the next one. Thank you.
