Kevin Cash's Controversial Decision

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, welcome to the 11th episode of Eli Studio Sports. Today, we will be talking about should Kevin Cash have pulled Blake's nail after five and a third innings? Should he have waited for at least the end of the inning?
00:00:18
Speaker
And then we're going to talk about Justin Turner taking off his mask, even when he knew the whole team knew that he had COVID. Then Trevor Lawrence has contracted the virus. We'll discuss what that means to Clemson and how it can make a difference in their college football playoff chances of making it.

Analyzing the Blake Snell Decision

00:00:38
Speaker
So, um, first let's talk about Kevin Cash pulling Blake Snell. So,
00:00:44
Speaker
I don't understand why you would make that move. I know he hasn't pitched six innings in over 20 games, but it's a problem that he hasn't pitched six innings. That's too because, like, he is probably the ace of their staff. If not, it's Tyler Glass now who's struggling um in the World Series. So, polling Snell, like, takes away all the moments in your carrying because you have 5.1 innings and he only throws 73 pitches like that's not little that's not too little but it's not that much either and what you're doing is you're taking out your ace and Mookie Betts admitted it he was he was he was screaming in his head yes let's call they're taking out Snell because he got absolutely embarrassed when he faced Snell so you know I don't think that Kevin Cash pulling Blake Snell would be the great move because
00:01:42
Speaker
no one's got hits against him except for the bottom of the lineup and they're not gonna hit till the 7-3 inning so you're taking ah away your guy that's doing what he's supposed to do and the supposing he is and he's struggled a little bit throwing wild pitches and all that but in that game he was throwing like the 2018 silent award winner okay he was Um, he was throwing better than I've seen him throw all season. And then you pull him after 5.1 innings, which he had nine strikeouts. That's why would you do that? And it's not like his pitch count was up to a hundred. It was 73. He has three innings left in him. I don't know. I mean, he could have pitched through eight innings. That's what you used to be able to do with him. But even though he's used to throwing five, four,
00:02:39
Speaker
innings, I mean it wouldn't hurt to try to put him in for a little longer. Just because one guy hits a hit, that doesn't mean you have to pull him out of the game. Even though you're facing Mookie Betts next, it doesn't make a difference. He got struck out. i He wasn't doing well against Snell and no one else was. Maybe Chris Taylor, Austin Barnes, they both got a hit, but want like,
00:03:08
Speaker
Both of those hit were, just you know, they barely got into the outfield. So I don't know why Kevin Cash pulled him. I know Blake Snell's used to throwing four, five, five and a third innings, but five and a third innings is not Enough because Nick Anderson, he's probably their best reliever but you can't always rely on your relievers as you've been able to because you have Pierre Fairbanks Nick Anderson Diego Castillo, but if they were to put in anyone in that situation it should have been Diego Castillo because Blake Snell, I mean he doesn't throw too fast
00:03:52
Speaker
but Nick Anderson or Peter Fairbanks who they put in later like those guys throw fast and Diego Castillo like Flakesnow I mean obviously he throws very fast but Diego Castillo has closer to his style than Nick Anderson and Peter Fairbanks and knowing that the Dodgers aren't hitting off that well you got to put him in but the real thing is that you shouldn't have taken Flakesnow out in the first place because you know You're putting your whole team in danger because they hadn't really gotten a run since the top of the first since the first when Randy Rosarina hit his dental run of the postseason which congratulations to him because he just broke a postseason record for most home runs and also Corey Seager right behind him with

Justin Turner's On-Field Controversy

00:04:39
Speaker
eight. but
00:04:40
Speaker
um so Like I said, they shouldn't have pulled him in the first place, but I don't understand why you're putting Nick Anderson in because like he is a nasty fastball, but. The Dodgers are very good at hitting fastballs is a raise in Dodgers. They're probably some of the best in the MLB at hitting fastballs, so you know Diego Castillo with his off speed pitches. I think that would. have At least send it to extra innings instead of a Dodgers 31 victory so
00:05:15
Speaker
Um, now we're going to talk about Justin Turner. So here's what he, he's playing his game. You know, it's, we're in the seventh inning and they take him out because they find out that he had COVID-19. So obviously he probably got tested but before the game, but he probably didn't have time to check his results because he needs to play obviously. And.
00:05:45
Speaker
He probably assumed that he was negative because he had been the whole season, including the postseason. So he thinks he's all fine and good, but really he was positive. He had contracted the virus. And then, so in the seventh inning, they take him out.
00:06:05
Speaker
puts his mask on good and then obviously he has to leave because you know you don't want him staying there and giving into all the fans and players and all that because you know I still gotta finish the ballgame but so Justin Turner he stays to watch I mean he didn't leave the stadium so he's still like with his mask on and the dugout I'm surprised he didn't have a face shield but I mean it is what it is but so he has his mask on that's the minimum to have that tab on but then he stays in the game so the Dodgers end up winning they win the series congratulations they won the World Series but Justin Turner goes out there and he knows he has COVID so does the whole team and he takes his mask off and he opens his map and he
00:07:03
Speaker
and his nose and his, and like, why would the whole team not have a mask on and Justin Turner takes his off too?

COVID-19 Risks After World Series

00:07:13
Speaker
That, that makes no sense. Like Justin Turner, I know he's a great player and they wouldn't have won without him and Mookie Betts and Corey Seeger want him to go out there out there with them, but it doesn't matter if he was a reason that you guys won the World Series like maybe it was out in the race win the series but look you can't be going out there when you know you have the virus like oh he but he says oh I'm fine and whole team is gonna be fine and that's true the whole team is gonna be fine because they have great health care but all the fans there all the media for the TV and all that you know you are
00:07:59
Speaker
putting a lot of people in danger and you know don't be surprised if you see Texas spiking up in COVID cases because I think I mean the media guys some of them are probably gonna get the virus and it's like decent amount of fans are gonna get it too so the I mean I know the whole team wants Justin Turner to go out there because he's a he's a reason why they won the World Series but come on like and then no one else has a mask on come on like it's it's not what all the sport players need to know is that it's not just about them it's about everyone else you've got to be able to protect everyone else because or else you know it's just gonna say where it is but ah I don't really that that was just really unacceptable by Justin Turner and
00:08:58
Speaker
Don't be surprised if you see a lot of Dodger's coronavirus cases and I mean, I, that is the, like, if I was a fan there, well, I probably would have left right when I found out that Justin Turner got it, but like taking his mask off when he knows he has it, that's absolutely unacceptable.

Trevor Lawrence's Diagnosis and Clemson's Future

00:09:24
Speaker
If, I mean the MLB, um,
00:09:27
Speaker
you better find him and maybe even the whole team because I get there happy they won the World Series and they want one of their players to go out there even though they have the virus but I mean at least keep his mask on and everyone else needs to be wearing one takes it off and starts kissing his wife and starts sitting around with everyone and no one has a mask on
00:09:54
Speaker
So anyways, now we're going to move on to Trevor Lawrence. So he's probably one of college football's biggest stars next to Justin Fields and others. But Clemson's star quarterback Trevor Lawrence has gotten COVID-19 And he will not be playing in today's game and the next weekend and this is going to affect Clemson that everyone knows that everyone who watches college football knows who Trevor Lawrence is and knows that this affects the team very bad. So this weekend, maybe they'll be able to pull it off, but next weekend is their biggest matchup of the year against Notre Dame and look.
00:10:41
Speaker
a backup quarterback is not going to cut it against Notre Dame like everyone that watches college football is going to know that but then now like I don't I know he's isolating I'm surprised this game wasn't canceled or at least postponed because I know that ah um you know only one guy has it but and I know he didn't get it from the team or anyone but the team's been around him and you I mean the day he got tested positive like the players were around him so I don't understand why this game wasn't at least postponed and if the NCAA like knows that I think that they should have postponed the game because they know that Trevor Lawrence is the probably the most impactful player in the league because
00:11:36
Speaker
If they didn't have him, i'm I'm not sure they're number one right now. So because, I mean, the ACC is not known for playing good football. I mean, Clemson and this year Notre Dame, that's it, you know? But then now you're seeing it. But wouldn't Trevor Lawrence like he is the most impactful player? I've already stated that, but Like the whole team will be playing as well without him. I don't think there's any question about that. And this affects them because if they lose two games, if they lose one game, like you're probably not making the college football playoff. Maybe you'll get lucky and the committee says, oh, well, they didn't have Trevor Lawrence. You guys are in it, but I don't think they're gonna see that. They look at the number of wins before they put a team in there. Because if you look at talent,
00:12:37
Speaker
The Gators might be in the top four. The Bulldogs might be in the top four. There are plenty of teams that could be in the top four that lost a game. The Gators, the maybe even oklahoma Oklahoma State. Well, they haven't lost. but like I think they could be in the top four. Georgia could be. There's a lot of teams that just They just lost the game. So now they're not going to make the college football playoff. And now it affects them even more because they don't have 12 games going nine and one. Like you're, you're probably not going to make it. If you go 11 and one, you might make it. It's a big difference there if you look at that. So, um, yeah, but Trevor, like, I don't think they were going to lose a game if they had Trevor Lawrence, but I expected them to make the college football playoff. I didn't think there was a doubt about it.
00:13:29
Speaker
If they played non-conference games, like if they played Oregon or something, like they're not making it because they're gonna lose to those kinds of teams. But now you look at it without Trevor Lawrence. It's an ugly picture right now because without your star, like maybe their backup's pretty good because it's Clemson, but it it might be the reason why he gets drafted. and It might be like Tom Brady. like if If Truvato doesn't get injured, Tom Brady might not be the greatest quarterback of all time. It my it might be here. Trevor Lawrence gets injured and their backup becomes the best college football player of all time. But it's not going to be that way because it's college. If it's the NFL, there's a chance of that happening, but that's just not the way it is now. So I think that if if their backup plays well,
00:14:27
Speaker
Like he's not going to stay as the starter, but how this affects the ACC is big because Notre Dame, who is going to play ACC football this year, is like, everyone knows the, find the ACC championship is going to be between Notre Dame and Clemson, but now it's different. Cause there are still teams in there that can compete. And looking now and you see, oh wait,
00:14:55
Speaker
Clemson might lose two games this year. All these teams have an opportunity now besides teams like Syracuse and Duke, but in Florida State. But now you're looking at picture and you say, oh wait, maybe the championships Notre Dame, North Carolina, something like that. But Notre Dame or North Carolina, sorry. If they don't lose any more games this year,
00:15:21
Speaker
I actually think they have a chance at making the championship because Clemson if they lose two games like in North Carolina doesn't lose anymore after they lost to Florida State and Notre Dame loses one or no games that's that's like North Carolina Notre Dame so I think that would actually be a really good game but if I had to choose I think that c Clemson is going to win this weekend, but next weekend they can't win because it's Notre Dame. If they get Trevor Lawrence back, I think they will win. But if they don't, um I just can't see them winning because like your backup is not going to do enough. So I think the championship is going to be between North Carolina and ah Clemson.
00:16:11
Speaker
If Trevor Lawrence comes, comes back for next weekend, and if not, then it's Notre Dame, North Carolina. I don't think there's a question about that, but, but if Clemson loses this weekend, they're done. Like they're not going to make the ACC championship unless if North Carolina loses to a bad team again and Notre Dame, like they do fine and they win and they lose one game. And which obviously that still might make you the college football playoff this year, but like I got said,
00:16:40
Speaker
Clemson without Trevor Lawrence is not the same. So that's going to affect them a lot. But thank you so much for listening to this episode of Eli Studio Sports. And if you haven't, make sure you vote by Tuesday. Thank you.
