Introduction and Episode Overview

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, welcome to the sixth episode of Eli Studio Sports. Today, we will be discussing the college football AP poll. The top 25 is finally out. And then we're going to go through the MLB, how it's going so far. So let's get started here.

Top College Football Rankings

00:00:17
Speaker
So first let's talk about the top 20 in college football this year. So we're going to start off. Number one is Clemson. There's no surprise. They have a very nice running back quarterback combo with Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne. They also have no competition in the ACC. So if you see them make the college football playoffs, don't be surprised because they are probably going to go undefeated unless there's some team in the ACC.
00:00:46
Speaker
that's in their schedule that can challenge them. Number two is Ohio State, but they're in the Big Ten, so they won't be playing. Obviously, the Big Ten coaches, players, parents, they were not happy about this decision. Justin Fields, he wasn't happy. And those of the seniors that got drafted that probably wouldn't like this decision, they got lucky that they wouldn't have to play. so Number three is Alabama and I 100% agree. I can have them at number one. They have like five of the top 15 players in college football this year. I am definitely not surprised about this pick because I mean, who is surprised? I get that Jerry, Judy, Henry Ruggs to attack by Lola. I get they're gone, but they still have a lot.
00:01:44
Speaker
I'm going to say their best player is Alex Leatherwood, but don't be surprised if they have anyone better than that and probably do. So this is a very talented team, and I think they might be number one by the time the season is over.

Challenges and Predictions for Top Teams

00:01:59
Speaker
Number four is Georgia. I'm really surprised that Georgia comes in at number four because they lost Jake f Fromm. They lost DeAndre Swift. And now they still have a very good quarterback.
00:02:14
Speaker
but they lost a ton of players in the draft. I don't know if they're still going to be able to be very good without some of those players like Jake f Fromm and DeAndre Swift. So it's going to be very tough for Georgia to convert, but I think they still have a shot. Now I'm not going to say they're going to be in the top four. I think they could be top 25 by the time the season's over, but don't be so sure.
00:02:41
Speaker
Number five is Oklahoma. I'm also surprised about this pick. They had the number 48 recruiting class of the country and they also lost C.D. Lamb. C.D. Lamb. And you still expect them to be number five. I'm really surprised about this but I'm just saying that I don't believe Oklahoma has a chance this year. Like they don't have a good quarterback anymore. They don't have a good wide receiver anymore. They just have Creed Humphries, who's a very good player. Don't get me wrong. But after that safety position, they don't have anyone. So they really, really have to work hard if they want to have a chance. So next we go to number six, we got LSU. I don't think so.
00:03:34
Speaker
I don't think LSU is going to come at number six. Why? Well, because first they lost Joe Burrow, which is horrible loss. But the thing about Joe Burrow that the year before he did not play well, if he didn't have a breakout year this year, he might not have gotten drafted and maybe a sixth or seventh rounder. And now he's the number one overall pick. So LSU, they lost 14 players in the draft. 14. That's a record.
00:04:03
Speaker
They also lost their offensive coordinator. That's a big loss, too. So when you think about it, LSU doesn't have that big of a shot because they lost so many players. They just kept them for an extra year, I guess. If they signed one year later, if they were 18 one year later, they would win this year. But what's not the case? So we're moving on to number seven.
00:04:32
Speaker
It's Penn State, their season is postponed, but they're thinking about playing the Big 10 season. They're thinking about starting on Thanksgiving. But Penn State, once the season resumes for the Big 10, they have one of the best players in college football right now. And that guy is Micah Parsons. If that guy can convert, Penn State can convert. So I'm not surprised seeing them at number seven. I thought I might see him at around number 10 or 11, but seven is still reasonable.

Mid-ranked Teams and Potential Surprises

00:05:01
Speaker
Number eight, it's Florida. I love this pick. I think there might, I think Florida's gonna be one of the four college football playoff teams. I mean, last year I get they lost seven players in the draft and they were all very good players, but this year they're gonna have a top 15 quarterback, Kyle Trask, who had a breakout year last year. If he didn't have that year last year,
00:05:28
Speaker
There's no doubt that he was not going to get drafted this year. um But then you look at the tight end position and you're going to have a first round draft pick in Kyle Pitts helping you out. So with that tight end quarterback duo, that's going to be fun to watch. Last year, that duo was very fun to watch if you watch some SEC football. So now we're going to number nine, Oregon. And A lot of people might be thinking, wait, Oregon? What do you mean Oregon? At number nine? No way. Yes way. I think that Oregon, I get they lost Justin Herbert, but they're going to have Panay Sewell back. He has gotten a lot of injuries, but he will be back. The only thing is that Oregon season has been postponed, whole pack 12.
00:06:22
Speaker
They are going to have a postponed season. They're trying to make it work for the spring and they are not like the Big Ten. They will not play on Thanksgiving and unless of things really change. So that's okay. And we go to number 10, Notre Dame. The reason why Notre Dame has a chance at making the college football playoff this year is because the ACC is going to allow them to play in their tournament, seriously. Well, it's one game, but I'm surprised about this because more teams is more dangerous because of COVID, but I mean, they can make it work, that's fine. But Notre Dame, they have a blockbuster amazing all-American quarterback in Ian Book. I think he's gonna have a breakout year. I think he's gonna turn out being a first or second rounder after this year. Why do I think that? Because,
00:07:21
Speaker
Last couple seasons, he's been one of the most underrated quarterbacks in all of college football. So seeing him, I think that'd be fine. I think they're definitely going to be a top 10 team by the time the season ends. Now we go to number 11. It's Auburn. I don't like this pick. I mean, they lost everything in the draft. They don't have any breakout players left.
00:07:51
Speaker
sides of the quarterback position. Auburn's toast right now. Moving on to number 12, we have Wisconsin. I'm surprised they lost their star center and Tyler B it does. I think that's how you say it. Um, so I don't know how Wisconsin could come out at number 12 because they just have not been
00:08:15
Speaker
productive besides those players that got drafted. So if there are only players that are productive got drafted, then it's not going to be great. They still have a star running back. But after that, you know, you can't see much on that team. Their season has been postponed. They're a Big Ten team. Big Ten it has a lot of talent this year. But we're moving on to number 13 in Texas A and&M.
00:08:43
Speaker
I would see him as a top 25 team. I did not see them coming in at 13. So they're a very good team. Don't get me wrong, but number 13 seems a little bit high. I think Kellen Momb is going to have a breakout year. I think he's going to turn out to be a third round pick, possibly late second round. And he's been one of the more underrated quarterbacks along with Kyle Trask and Ian Books. so If he can have a good year, Texas A and&M can too. They've also lost some guys in the draft, but if they can play well, then Kellen Mond, if he plays well, Texas A and&M plays well. Moving on to number 14, we have Texas. I like this pick. Last year they had a disappointing season, but they had a couple good games like that LSU game.
00:09:35
Speaker
At that time, that was probably the game of the year. and They only lost by a touchdown. And LSU turned out to be the best team, maybe, in college football history. so I think that Sam Ellinger, if he has a good year, then Texas will too. They also have some other parts on that team, but they don't have enough defense. So they need guys like Sam Ellinger and more. Their wide receivers, Sam Ellinger, they need to have good years because if those guys don't have good years, then Texas does not have a good year. Moving on to number 15, we have Oklahoma State.
00:10:12
Speaker
I love this pick. I would even put them in the top 10. I mean, Oklahoma State, they're been one of the more underrated teams, like I said. But with Chubba Hubbard being your star running back, I love it. I love this pick. He's been, in my opinion, the best running back in college football last season. And I get there were some other guys and You can make an argument about those guys. But Chubba Hubber, I mean, coming out of nowhere. After his first year in college, kapoom, man. That guy was beast. So if he can perform, soak in Oklahoma State. Absolutely. So moving on to number 16, Michigan. A lot of you guys probably like this pick. And I don't think it's a bad pick, but I don't see Michigan doing damage because
00:11:09
Speaker
They've had some good teams, but when they play some of the top 25 teams, they can't convert. They played Ohio State. They play them every year. They've lost for like seven years in a row. When they played Florida in a bowl game, when they were ranked, they got smoked. When they play the good teams, they get crushed.
00:11:34
Speaker
So I don't see Michigan being a top 16 team. I don't see them being in the top 25 as soon as the Big Ten season starts. And they might not even be in the rankings because I don't even know if the Big Ten teams can be in the rankings because of the delayed season. But if they do turn out to be allowed to be in the rankings, there's no way that Michigan is going to be in the top 25 in my opinion. So we're going to move on to number 17. We've got USC.
00:12:05
Speaker
I don't understand anything. Why is USC at number 17? Every year, they're expected to be a top 20 team, and then their best records have been like eight and four, which aren't bad, but you wanna be a top 20 team, you gotta be nine and three at least. So USC needs to really step it up if they want to have a chance.
00:12:32
Speaker
So I just want to see USC if they can play well, especially at the quarterback position. Absolutely. They're a top 20 team, but they also need to have good defense. That's been a problem lately for this USC team. So we're moving on to number 18 and it's North Carolina, you know,
00:12:53
Speaker
They've not had very good years lately. Last year they got off to a bad start, but they had a very good finish last year. So I'm surprised to see them in the top 20. But at the end of the season, I think they have a shot at the top 25 because they also have very good coach. So if they can convert, if the quarterback condition converts,
00:13:16
Speaker
convert if they If the coach makes good decisions, if they can play solid defense, absolutely top 25, maybe not top 20 because they're in the ACC and they never really have great years. But I think that North Carolina has a shot. Moving on to number 19, we've got Minnesota. Love it. I get their seasons getting postponed. And obviously, they're probably not happy about it, especially not the parents or the players.
00:13:45
Speaker
But Minnesota, they've been a team that surprised a lot of people. Last year they played Penn State when they were number four, and they actually beat them. So when they play the good teams, they win most of the time. But when they play teams like Ohio State good, that good, they're not able to win. But I think that that's still a good pick at number 19. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw them in the top 15. I would be surprised if I saw them in the top 10, though.
00:14:16
Speaker
So moving on to number 20. So I do not understand this pick at all. You have teams like Tennessee, Iowa State, UCF behind this team, and then they pick Cincinnati. Whoa, that makes absolutely no sense. Look, Cincinnati has been one of those top 25 top 30 top 35 teams but they've never really been considered one of the top 20 teams they've never been considered like that not one time in history i don't see why cincinnati is at number 20 because they haven't done anything to deserve it now that is the top 20 we do not have time to talk about the top 25 the top 20
00:15:07
Speaker
One to top twenty five.

MLB Season Highlights

00:15:09
Speaker
Number twenty one was UCF. Number twenty two was Utah. Number twenty three was Iowa State. Number twenty four was Iowa and number twenty five was Tennessee. I just want to point out Tennessee has the number two recruiting class of the country this year, which is very surprising because they don't have one of the best teams. They're not known for that. But hey, I mean, if they can recruit well, they can play well.
00:15:36
Speaker
Anyways, now we're going to move on quickly to the MLB. So their season is halfway through. So that's a big accomplishment for the MLB because they have had some breakouts earlier this year, but being able to get through that is a real milestone for them. Congratulations to Rob Manfred. He's done an absolutely phenomenal job. Now we're going to move on to Who I think is going to make the playoffs after? About half of the years done so. I think the first seed in the AO is going to be the Rays. I think the second seed. Is going to be the White Sox. You didn't see that coming, did you? And then the third seed I think is going to be the Oakland Athletics. They've been a absolutely phenomenal team this year.
00:16:33
Speaker
i been very impressed on what they've been able to do. Okay. And then the two wild card teams I think are going to be the Indians and the twins. So I don't not, I don't have the Yankees making the playoffs. They just had a seven game losing streak. They snapped it yesterday, but I mean, they have been an absolute They've been a disappointment because they got Garrett Cole and they're only 17 and 13. I don't see them making the playoffs. Sorry, Yankees fans that are listening. Then the National League.

National League Playoff Predictions

00:17:13
Speaker
They've been pretty good lately. Okay, so the teams that I have making the playoffs, the one seed is the Dodgers. The two seed is the Braves.
00:17:28
Speaker
And the three seed are the Cubs. The the Padres. Definitely the Padres. They've had an absolutely phenomenal year. And, and the Rockies. Those are the only teams that aren't in second place that, or that aren't in first place, sorry, that are having a winning record. And the Padres have been phenomenal.
00:17:58
Speaker
Fernando Tatis Jr. He's leading the league in home runs and is an MVP candidate for the NL. That's absolutely phenomenal. And then Manny Machado, I mean, come on, he's been absolutely phenomenal. Aaron Hosmer has been doing great too. Then Trent Grisham and Will Myers, they've been doing pretty good. If guys like that can convert, they have a chance at winning the World Series. Okay.

World Series Speculation

00:18:28
Speaker
So I think the World Series is going to be be be between the San Diego Padres and the Oakland Athletics. No one saw that coming, I believe. OK, so I think the winner is going to be the San Diego Padres. Like I said, if guys like Will Myers and Tran Grisham are going to convert Absolutely. There is no reason why the Padres don't win. They also have some solid pitchers, including Danelle's and Lomette, and a lot more. The A's, on the other hand, they've been phenomenal this year. No one saw them coming. Not a single person. Maybe some people. But they've got Ramon Laureano, Matt Chapman, Chris Davis, Matt Olsen,
00:19:22
Speaker
Tony Kemp, Mark Dissimian, Mike Fiers, Mark Cana. That's what they have on their team and they still have guys that are pretty good that I didn't mention like Chad Pinder, Jesus Losardo, and Sean Murphy even, Sean Manaya too, Steven Piscotti. I wouldn't be surprised if this team won either but I'm gonna go with the Padre so Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Eli's Studio

NBA Playoffs Summary

00:19:54
Speaker
Sports. And before I let you guys go, the NBA playoffs are underway. So I just want to point out some series that really surprised me. ah So the Magic Loose to the Bucks in five games. The Heat beat the Pacers and they sweep them.
00:20:15
Speaker
The Raptors sweep the Nets and the Celtics sweep the 76ers. So the Eastern semifinals are set. Heat and Bucks will play and then the Raptors and Celtics will play. The Lakers have officially beaten the Portland Trail Blazers.
00:20:34
Speaker
um And the Jazz are leading the Nuggets 3-2 in their series. The Rockets lead the Thunder 3-2 and the Clippers lead the Mavericks 3-2. So the Western Conference has had a lot more close series.
00:20:52
Speaker
The most surprising one to me has been the Mavericks and the Clippers. I thought the Clippers were going to sweep them. The Mavericks have really come out. The reason why I think the Mavericks won't win the series is because Christoph Sporzingis has been ruled out for the rest of the series. The reason why they're not winning the series is because KP got ejected in game one. They were winning when he got ejected. I think they'd be leading the series three to two if Christoph Sporzingis didn't get Ejected in game one. So thank you so much for listening to Eli studio sports. See you in the next episode
