Introduction and Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome again, everybody. Today is June 26, and you're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17
Speaker
I am so glad that you are here with me. We are going to be having a really exciting reading today in Ezekiel, where we find out what happened in our cliffhanger as the voice was about to speak to Ezekiel.

Engagement and Commitment

00:00:33
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today, whether you are following along on your podcast or whether you are watching the video. And if you are following along on your commitment calendar, go ahead and get that out and your sticker or however you're marking that off because you're about to hear the Bible today.

Personal Reflections and Encouragement

00:00:52
Speaker
And guys, ah Jedi and Forrest and Diamond and Pearl, I'm going to bring the month of of the calendar and the stickers to you when I see you on Saturday.
00:01:03
Speaker
I never did get it in the mail. I am terrible about that. So I will see you guys. And then, you and then Diamond, you can have fun putting all of those stickers on for the whole month.
00:01:15
Speaker
Jedi, maybe you'll have a lot of fun doing it too. And Forrest. Jedi, you are following along in your reading with the Day by Day Kids Bible, and you are really getting to be such a great reader.
00:01:28
Speaker
i am so proud of you for not just listening, but for seeing with your eyes so that the Word of God is really making its way into both your heart and your mind.
00:01:40
Speaker
Today, we're going to hear God tell Ezekiel to receive with his heart the words that God is giving him. So as Ezekiel was to listen and receive the words that God gave him, may you also receive God's words in your mind and your heart today.

Understanding Ezekiel's Vision

00:02:00
Speaker
So we are going to get going. Our reading today covers a number of chapters in Ezekiel. It covers chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
00:02:15
Speaker
And we are going to actually be looking at the Big Bible version of some of it for our daily application today. Because i i am finding that our audience here is mature enough, especially you kids, you are mature enough to understand God's big word too.
00:02:35
Speaker
So there is so much more detail that is in our big Bibles that I think will be important to our understanding. And God has just really put it on my heart to share these things with you.
00:02:48
Speaker
And I was so delighted to hear that you had such a magnificent discussion about the Jubilee yesterday after we talked about that. I was just so excited that God is really working his spirit within you to ask and to know about the things that are written in his word.
00:03:07
Speaker
So I am going to, i am encouraged to give you even more because you guys are ready for a lot of meat, as we would say in the word.
00:03:18
Speaker
ah You don't need just milk. So, and Owen Diamond, we're going to hear your name today.
00:03:27
Speaker
So here we go. We're going pick up where we left yesterday. And it says at the end of yesterday's reading, He says, a voice came from the space above them, above the creatures he's referring to.
00:03:45
Speaker
And above the space was something that looks like a king's chair. This throne was made of beautiful blue stones. Someone one who looked like a man sat on the king's throne.
00:04:01
Speaker
His top half looked like shiny full of fire. full of fire and his bottom half looked like fire. Bright light was all around him, and he looked like a rainbow in the clouds.
00:04:18
Speaker
And that's what God's greatness looked like. I put my face down to the ground when I saw it, and then I heard a voice. God said, Ezekiel, stand up, Ezekiel. I will talk to you.
00:04:36
Speaker
The Spirit came to me while God was talking, and he pulled me back up so I was standing, and I heard God talk to me.
00:04:49
Speaker
God said, Ezekiel, I am sending you. i am sending you to the nation of Israel. The people turned against me.
00:05:01
Speaker
Their hearts are hard. Tell them. Here is of what what God says.
00:05:08
Speaker
They might listen. They might not listen.

Symbolic Acts and Prophecy

00:05:11
Speaker
But they will know that a prophet talked to them. Do not be afraid of them. Don't be afraid of what they say.
00:05:22
Speaker
You must tell them what I say, even if they do not listen. Don't be like them. Listen to what I tell you. Open your mouth. Eat what I give you.
00:05:36
Speaker
Then i saw a hand. It held out a roll of paper for me. He unrolled the paper. It had writing on both sides.
00:05:48
Speaker
It had sad words and bad news. God said, Eat this roll of paper. Then go speak to my people.
00:06:00
Speaker
So I ate the roll of paper. It was sweet, like honey in my mouth.
00:06:09
Speaker
Hard hearts. Then God said, go to my people, tell them my words. They speak your language. They understand your words, but they won't want to listen to you.
00:06:23
Speaker
That's because they don't want to listen to me. They have hard hearts, but I will make you as strong as they are. I will make your forehead as hard as stone.
00:06:37
Speaker
It will be harder than rock, so don't be scared of them. Listen, said God. Think about what I am saying to you.
00:06:49
Speaker
Go to your people here in Babylon. Talk to them. Tell them what I tell you to say. Tell them, even if they don't listen.
00:07:01
Speaker
Now get a clay writing pad, said God. Draw a picture of Jerusalem on it. Make it look as if enemy ladders are going up to the walls.
00:07:14
Speaker
Draw enemy camps around it. Then get an iron pan and use it for an iron wall. Put it between you and the city.
00:07:27
Speaker
Then look at it as if you are fighting against the city. This will be a sign for my people. Then lie down on your left side.
00:07:39
Speaker
Lie there one day for every year my people in Israel sinned. Israel sinned for 390 years. so lie there for three hundred and ninety days
00:07:55
Speaker
After that, lie down again. This time, lie down on your right side. Lie there for 40 days, because Judah sinned for 40 years.
00:08:10
Speaker
Turn your face toward Jerusalem and speak against Judah. I will tie you up with ropes, and then you can't turn over to your other side.
00:08:23
Speaker
Eat bread. and drink water. Plan how much you will eat and drink each day. Plan when you will eat and drink. Bake your bread where people can see it.
00:08:36
Speaker
I will take the food away from Jerusalem, said God. The people will have to plan how much to eat. They will have to plan how much to drink.
00:08:49
Speaker
They will not have enough. They will get weaker and weaker because of the wrong they have done.
00:08:57
Speaker
Three piles of hair. Get a sharp sword, said God. Use it to shave your head and your face.
00:09:09
Speaker
Make three piles of hair and burn one pile of hair inside the city. Take one pile of hair out of the city. Hit it with your sword.
00:09:21
Speaker
Throw the last pile up into the wind. This shows that I will chase the people with a sword. Keep a few hairs. Put them in your robe.
00:09:34
Speaker
Throw some into the fire. Let them burn up. This shows that a fire will go out from there and it will go to all of Israel. of israel
00:09:47
Speaker
Here is what God says. I am against you, Jerusalem. I will pay you back for the wrong you have done. It is all because of your idols. I won't feel sorry for you.
00:10:02
Speaker
Some of your people will die of sickness. Some will die of hunger. Some will die in fights. Some will leave.
00:10:13
Speaker
They will go here and there through the world. Then i will stop being angry and they will know that I said this would happen. I am God. I have spoken.
00:10:29
Speaker
It's the end. Then God told me to speak his words against Israel's mountains. Mountains. I am going to bring fighting.
00:10:40
Speaker
Towns will be torn down. Idols will be torn down. People will be killed. Some people will get away, but they will have to live in other nations.
00:10:53
Speaker
Then they will remember me and be sorry they did wrong. They will know that I am the Lord.

Parallels to Jesus' Mission

00:11:03
Speaker
Trouble, trouble like you have never seen before is coming.
00:11:07
Speaker
It's the end. It's the end. it has come. They were proud of their beautiful gold rings and neckbands. They used their gold to make idols.
00:11:19
Speaker
So other nations will rob my people of their riches. I will pay them back for the wrong they have done. Then they will know I am the Lord. And that's the end of our reading today.
00:11:38
Speaker
Wow. That was a lot for God to tell Ezekiel. He did tell some of it at different times. It's a little bit consolidated over two different meetings, I think.
00:11:52
Speaker
But there is a lot there. In my reading today, I went through and I read the the books, chapters 2 through 7 in Ezekiel.
00:12:04
Speaker
and Not the books, the chapters, I mean to say. and What I can see, what God has told him is that he is to be a watchman. He is a little bit like Jesus.
00:12:17
Speaker
He is suffering. because of what the people have done. And no but no other prophet had to do it things like the things Ezekiel had to do.
00:12:29
Speaker
And Jeremiah was the weeping prophet, and he had to go through a lot of things. But Ezekiel, oh my gosh, God really put him into service.
00:12:40
Speaker
And we're going to look at Ezekiel chapters 2 and 3. Do you notice in our reading, it tells us when God says to go to the people, he tells them, they speak your language and they understand your words, but they won't want to listen to you.
00:13:02
Speaker
And that's because they don't want to listen to me. They have hard hearts, but I will make you as strong as they are and I will make your forehead as strong as hard as stone.
00:13:17
Speaker
will be harder than rock. So don't be scared of them. He reminds me of Jesus, Ezekiel does, because he is ah paying for the iniquities, it says in our big version, for the sins of the people of Israel and Judah.
00:13:33
Speaker
He's having to experience things on their behalf. So, and he's not, you know, he didn't replace, you know, pay for our sins or anything. ah So they didn't benefit. But when God gave him the the task as watchman, as ah overseer type of a thing,
00:13:52
Speaker
in chapter three, we don't have that covered in our version, but God gave Ezekiel the job to tell people when they were sinning.
00:14:03
Speaker
And then if the people listened and turned back, then Ezekiel would be rewarded. And if they did not listen, then they would have to pay for their sins.
00:14:16
Speaker
But Ezekiel had to tell the people what God told him to tell them because God tells him that if he does not tell them these things, then they will not be held responsible.
00:14:29
Speaker
Ezekiel will have to pay the price for it. And in the same way, Jesus says that because he came and told people and ah and showed them the signs that he showed them, that now they are guilty of sin. But if they had not, if he had not done so, they would not be guilty of sin.
00:14:51
Speaker
So it's very paralleling between Ezekiel and Jesus in some of those ways.
00:14:58
Speaker
So we're going to look at, and and we will get to that verse as well, ah about Jesus in a few minutes. But let's look first at Ezekiel 2.
00:15:09
Speaker
Diamond, I told you we would get to your name and we will get to that as well.
00:15:15
Speaker
In chapter 2, part of our daily application today is that God equips us. Did you see how God said that although the people were stubborn and rebellious, that God would make him stronger?
00:15:33
Speaker
God equips us for the work that he gives us to do. He knows that he is sending us out like lambs among the wolves, I think Jesus said.
00:15:45
Speaker
And so he has prepared us for whatever task he sends us to do. And he prepared Ezekiel.
00:15:54
Speaker
And I love God's frankness here, his directness. this is This was a little bit funny to me when we got to that part where he says that he wasn't sending Ezekiel to, ah he was sending Ezekiel to a place where they knew his language.
00:16:11
Speaker
But in the big version, it's it's a little funnier. So I'm going to read that as well. He says, and starting in verse three of chapter two,
00:16:24
Speaker
He said to me, Son of man, I send you to the children of Israel. And I love how God always refers to the people as the children of Israel.
00:16:37
Speaker
because they were, ah you remember Jacob's name was changed from Jacob to Israel. So they are the children of Israel, but we are God's children. And I love that.
00:16:49
Speaker
None of the words that God uses are coincidental. They all have deep meaning. And that's where we will get to your name, Diamond.
00:17:01
Speaker
He said to me, son of man, I send you to the children of Israel, to rebellious nations that have been rebelling against me. They and their fathers have rebelled against me to this very day.
00:17:15
Speaker
The children, the children, God calls them, have hard faces and stubborn hearts.
00:17:25
Speaker
You ever have a hard face?
00:17:29
Speaker
That's my hard face. Stubborn. Not going to do it.
00:17:35
Speaker
The children have hard faces and stubborn hearts. I am sending you to them and you are to tell them. Thus says the Lord God. Whether they listen or whether they refuse to listen, for they are a rebellious house.
00:17:52
Speaker
they will know that a prophet was among them. but so So it's written a little bit differently than we have in ours. God is telling them whether they choose to listen or not, he is still sending a prophet.
00:18:03
Speaker
But notice how the choice is theirs.
00:18:08
Speaker
But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them. Do not fear their words, though thistles and thorns are beside you and you sit among scorpions.
00:18:20
Speaker
Do not be afraid of their words or be dismayed by their looks. So God is telling him ahead of time. They're going to give him nasty looks. They're going to have hard faces. They're going to be stubborn.
00:18:34
Speaker
They're rebellious. He says, you will speak my words to them, whether they will listen or whether they will refuse to listen. Or they are rebellious.
00:18:45
Speaker
God says that over and over again. Now you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house.
00:18:59
Speaker
Open your mouth and eat what I am giving to you. I looked, and behold, a hand was stretched out to me holding a written scroll. He spread it before me.
00:19:12
Speaker
it was written on It was written on front and back, and written on it were lamentations, dirges, which are funeral songs, and woe. Then he said to me, Son of man, eat what you find.
00:19:27
Speaker
Eat the scroll. Then go speak to the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth and he gave me that scroll to eat. As he said to me, son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.
00:19:45
Speaker
I ate it and it tasted as sweet as honey.
00:19:51
Speaker
Then he said to me, son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak my words to them. This is the part that is funny. For you are not sent to a people of unintelligible speech, which means a speech that you can't talk understand what it means, and difficult tongue.
00:20:12
Speaker
But you are sent to the house of Israel, nor are you sent to many peoples of unintelligible speech or difficult tongue whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I sent you to such, they would listen to you.
00:20:28
Speaker
Kind of like Nineveh. When Jonah sent Nineveh, they listened and they repented. But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me.
00:20:41
Speaker
So here's part of our daily application. Surely the whole house of Israel has a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. Jesus told us in John chapter...
00:21:00
Speaker
15, that the world, if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. So remember, God is telling Ezekiel that you're going to talk to them and they're hard hearted and they may refuse to listen to you because they are so hard hearted.
00:21:24
Speaker
But if it's you they're refusing to, don't worry because they're not listening to me either. God is sending Ezekiel to give his message. So it's not Ezekiel that they are not listening to.
00:21:36
Speaker
It is God they are not listening to. And Jesus tells us the same thing in John chapter 15.

Challenges and Strength in God's Calling

00:21:44
Speaker
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
00:21:49
Speaker
If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world. But I have chosen you out of the world.
00:22:00
Speaker
That is why the world hates you. God chose Ezekiel in the same way that Jesus chose you and me. We are chosen.
00:22:13
Speaker
Remember what I told you. A servant is not greater than his master. So if they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
00:22:24
Speaker
Ezekiel is not better than God. They ignored God. They will also ignore Ezekiel. So Ezekiel is being told, don't take it personally.
00:22:36
Speaker
When people don't listen to something that God has told you to say to somebody because he has put it on your heart to give somebody a message and they don't listen, don't take it personally.
00:22:49
Speaker
It's not you they are not listening to. It is God they are not listening to. We are not to be discouraged. Instead, we are to be as hard as Ezekiel because God is equipping us and Jesus and God are telling us ahead of time.
00:23:06
Speaker
That if it's not they are not listening because they are rebellious and hard-hearted, it is not you they are ignoring. So don't be sad.
00:23:20
Speaker
If they persecuted you, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. This is John chapter 15.
00:23:35
Speaker
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Oh, they will treat you this way because of my name, verse 21.
00:23:46
Speaker
Now, before we get to that, I want to give us the parallel first in Ezekiel, because it's not covered in our reading, but it is applicable to our daily application.
00:23:58
Speaker
And also I want to read a little bit further here because I promised you Jedi that we went that I wanted you to be blessed in the same way to receive God's word in the same way that God gave it to Ezekiel.
00:24:12
Speaker
He says, surely the whole house of Israel has a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. Look, I have made your face as hard as their faces and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.
00:24:27
Speaker
I will make your forehead like adamant. So remember, God is equipping Ezekiel to go. Now, the word adamant, usually when we use the word adamant, it means that we are absolutely not going to be persuaded to change our mind.
00:24:46
Speaker
I am adamant that you must do this. We use the word in that context. But diamond, here's your name. So I looked up the word adamant because although I know how to use the word adamant, I have never heard it used as a description.
00:25:02
Speaker
I will make your forehead like adamant. In the NIV, it just simply says harder than stone. But it's a little bit of a of a weak translation, much in the same way that peace is a weak translation of shalom.
00:25:19
Speaker
This is translated from Greek. And so the word that the Hebrew people were given from God was, I will make your forehead like adamant. So what does that mean?
00:25:30
Speaker
Does it simply mean to be stubborn? A little bit. So I looked it up in the dictionary and adamant
00:25:43
Speaker
from the Greek, from Latin, adamus or adamantus, the hardest metal. Adamant is what was long time ago referred to as the hardest metal.
00:25:58
Speaker
So that is where we get our word for using it as being hard or stubborn. It says a stone imagined by some to be of impenetrable hardness, a name formerly given to the diamond.
00:26:18
Speaker
and other substances of extreme hardness. So I am curious, Diamond. I've seen you be stubborn, just a little bit.
00:26:31
Speaker
Has God made you be strong for his word? That you will be strong like Adamant? I am curious because Adamant is the name formerly given to the Diamond.
00:26:49
Speaker
We will see.
00:26:53
Speaker
And then of course we know ah it also means what but what we ah it also means to be unbreakable hardness, unyielding, firm, too hard to be broken, unbreakable.
00:27:11
Speaker
So God is equipping Ezekiel. to be unbreakable. And he puts it on his forehead, symbolizing his his mind.
00:27:24
Speaker
He will proclaim what God has told him, and he will be unyielding. And despite the fact that the people are going to tell him that he's full of nothing and that his words are worthless and that they have no interest in what he's saying and he's giving them nonsense and their faces are going to be hard. God says, don't worry about their faces that they give you, those nasty looks they give you.
00:27:48
Speaker
Don't worry about whatever nasty things they say about you because I have made you harder than they are. God was making him strong.
00:28:00
Speaker
He says, furthermore, he said to me, son of man, here you go, Jedi, receive in your heart and hear with your ears all my words that I will speak to you.
00:28:16
Speaker
So Ezekiel was not just being equipped to be hard, but God gave him words that he would eat and fill his belly with. and he would be And Ezekiel was told to receive
00:28:32
Speaker
So he is, was, that's a a choice, but God was commissioning him. He was chosen, but he was being told to not just accept it and say, okay, but to receive it, which means that he would be holding tight to it. When you receive something, you take it and you have it now.
00:28:54
Speaker
So receive in your heart and hear with your ears. all of my words that I will speak to you. So Jedi, may you receive in your heart and hear with your ears, all God's words that he will speak to you.
00:29:17
Speaker
That is my blessing for you.
00:29:22
Speaker
Now further down in Ezekiel chapter three, starting in verse 16,
00:29:31
Speaker
Ezekiel has been returned. He has been brought in the spirit back to where he was when he was by the river. And it says that in verse 15, he says, I came to the exiles at Tel Abib who lived by the river Kabar. That's where he was taken in the spirit.
00:29:51
Speaker
And I sat there and I sat there overwhelmed among them for seven days. So Ezekiel was overwhelmed at first, and I wanted to point out his humanity there.
00:30:04
Speaker
He's been given a very big job to do, and he is feeling overwhelmed.
00:30:12
Speaker
chapter Verse 16, chapter 3. Now at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel.
00:30:25
Speaker
When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me. When I say to the wicked, you will surely die. and you do not warn him speak to warn the wicked of his wicked ways to save his life.
00:30:42
Speaker
See, God is trying to save the people. God loves his people. He is trying to save them and he is sending Ezekiel to give them time so that they may be saved from their ways.
00:30:56
Speaker
He says that

Conclusion and Encouragement

00:30:57
Speaker
if you you give them a warning from me, and if you do not warn them, and you don't speak or warn the wicked of his wicked way to save his life, then that wicked person will die in his sin, his iniquity.
00:31:11
Speaker
But I will require his blood from your hand. He is holding Ezekiel responsible for failing to warn people, to give them a chance to turn back and do the right thing when God specifically sends them to him.
00:31:27
Speaker
He says, yet you if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way he will die in his sin but you will have delivered your soul when a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts perversely badly i will lay a stumblinglock before him and he will die because you have not warned him he will die in his sin His righteous deeds that he has done will not be remembered, but I will require his blood at your hand.
00:32:05
Speaker
If you warn the righteous person not to sin and the righteous person does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning and you will have delivered your soul.
00:32:17
Speaker
So God is holding him personally responsible for making sure that he delivers the messages.
00:32:27
Speaker
He says, so now we will go to back to John chapter 15, where we parallel with Jesus and he says,
00:32:41
Speaker
In same way Jesus was sent if i had not come and spoken to them they would not be guilty of sin but now they have no excuse for their sin in the same way jesus was sent by god to tell us of our sin and to but he paid the price for our sin Whoever hates me hates my father as well.
00:33:09
Speaker
If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen. And yet, they have hated both me and my father.
00:33:27
Speaker
So remember to be encouraged that it is not you that they hate. It is God that they are hating and disobeying. Verse 25, but this is to fulfill what is written in their law.
00:33:40
Speaker
They hated me without reason.

And Jesus, of course, does forgive us now of our sins. we We are forgiven. And that's something we want to be sure and tell people. But we do have good works that God has prepared ahead of time for us to do.
