Humorous Banter on Fuzzy Handcuffs

00:00:25
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody, to another episode of MicroPods. I'm sitting here with Jake Sperling. As always, Jake, what is up? Hello, Kyle. How are you today? I'm doing good.
00:00:36
Speaker
Have you and Julia ever used fuzzy handcuffs? No, I just use the normal ones. Yeah. The, the good ones that I have. So she can't get away. Do you have fuzzy handcuffs? No, I heard they break easy. Cause I was going to say that'd be kind of crazy if you know, you accidentally like shut up to work with fuzzy handcuffs. I think people will think it's funny. Yeah. I mean, I'd laugh if someone pulled out, pulled those

Interview with Kaylee Garrett

out.
00:01:01
Speaker
So we got a good episode planned today for you guys. We have one of our, one of our dear friends, Kaylee Garrett. She is here with us in the studio. We're going to be talking to her about her new gig with a night fire magazine. The three of us have some music recommendations, just some bands that, you know, we had just discovered or bands that we're listening to, whatever. We'll figure it out when we get to it. But
00:01:31
Speaker
Let's get into it with Kaylee Garrett. Welcome, Kaylee. I'm so happy to be here with you guys. We're happy for you to be here with us too. So did you want to talk about how we all met?
00:01:56
Speaker
Um, so the first time that I met Jake and Kyle was in 2018, I think I'm pretty sure I was like 19 at the time. Uh, I met both of you guys through Jesse Posey. Um, I accidentally ran into him with another friend who like knew him at lazy dog, of course. Um, and I remember him talking about you guys and I was sitting there business card in my pocket, right?
00:02:24
Speaker
I'm like, Oh my God, this is literally what I'm trying to do with my life. I'm like, I want to take pictures of bands. So when our group was leaving, I was like, Hey, um, just to formally introduce myself, I'm Kaylee. I'm like, here's my business card. I love taking pictures of bands. Like, let me know if you guys need anything.

Career Growth and Move to Maui

00:02:41
Speaker
And then I swear to God that weekend, he was like, yeah, come take pictures. And I was like, sick, I'm in.
00:02:47
Speaker
So I thought, I thought that you guys, that you and Jesse like knew each other from like, I don't know. I thought you guys had known each other for a while or maybe you guys met on like Tinder. Nope. It was just a weird coincidence. Like an outing after my summer class was over me and like a few students were like, all right, let's go party. Let's go rage. How did you get into photography? And like, when did you decide that you wanted to, uh, you know, take pictures for bands and musicians?
00:03:18
Speaker
So I got into photography in general. I had always really liked it. My mom used to have a camera around the house, so I was constantly taking it and just running around with it. But then when I was living with my dad, he swore up and down, like, I swear to God, I was like, I'm going to pay for this camera. Let me buy it. And he was like, no, you're never going to use it.
00:03:39
Speaker
So I never got one throughout high school and then I moved out at 18 to Maui all by myself. And I was like, you know what? Fuck this shit. So I went and bought my camera, my very first one. Started taking pictures, mostly like landscapes and stuff with family members and friends. And then right after that is when I moved here and I started just meeting a bunch of people. I met you guys. I met all of Madison's friends. Madison is my sister for people who don't know that.
00:04:09
Speaker
And then it just kind of skyrocketed from there. Did Madison Ernie live out here? The reason I moved out here was for her because she's an actress She was only 17 at the time so she couldn't lease a place by herself So basically what happened is I was like, okay, I'll move out there with you so that both of our names would be on the lease and then she could be out here for all the acting stuff and then

Founding of Night Fire Magazine

00:04:32
Speaker
I just kind of fell into it. So you recently just got a gig with a night fire mag. They're a new startup magazine company, right? They write blogs, articles, um, reviews on bands. You guys did one for us. That was awesome. And that wasn't you that wrote it either.
00:04:53
Speaker
No, I when I sent it to our little group I wanted someone else to review it because obviously I'm very biased like I love you guys and I would Talk you guys up like crazy but I wanted to see what what someone else thought from like a completely unbiased like has never heard you guys

Concert Photography Adventures

00:05:14
Speaker
before and
00:05:14
Speaker
Cause I figured that might be a better route to go for you guys. That's cool. Cause I thought you wrote it. Um, no, it was not me. If you're curious, um, when it comes to like reviewing songs and stuff, a lot of the, cause I go through the same basic format. Um, obviously the body and the conclusion are different, but the intro is always relatively similar where.
00:05:39
Speaker
they do pull it from the Spotify artist bio or just really any bio that they can get they can pull from because they want to be able to introduce you to other people so no absolutely just helps that it helps to have an approved artist bio for people to you know just jumpstart their article yeah
00:06:05
Speaker
So I want to talk more about nut fire mag. Uh, how did it get started? How did you get on board with it? Who's involved with it? What is the goal for it? I know that they do a like metal core reviews, right? PCL. PCL reviews only. Um, so someone I know, her name is Lore. Um, she,
00:06:32
Speaker
Tweeted out one day just randomly. She's like, she's like, shit, guys, should I start a music publication? And I DM'd her and I was like, fuck yes, you should. Like, I want to be in this. And so she created it, like sent out a tweet for applications and stuff.
00:06:48
Speaker
And immediately I've never typed so fast in my life. I filled that shit out and sent it to her. And then she dames me on Twitter. She's like, you didn't even have to send that. I just assumed you were going to be involved. I was like, I was like, Oh sick. Okay. We're on the same page. That's tight. Um, so I know it says that they're like, we're focused in metal core, but, uh, we're obviously very open to pretty much everyone. Just like music in that, in that general area. Yeah. Yeah. Like you're not going to be reviewing like any bluegrass. No.
00:07:19
Speaker
Nope, I don't see that happening at all. But yeah, so anything that's relatively similar, it's been very cool to be a part of. So we do song reviews, we do show reviews, we have galleries on there for the photographers that are out shooting shows on behalf of Nightfire. Sometimes we do album reviews, just depends on what it is, but that's pretty much all that we cover.
00:07:44
Speaker
So you were at the State Champs show. How did you get into that as a photographer, not just buying a ticket and going? Or did you have to buy a ticket? Well, I bought a ticket, but it was mostly just to better my chances. Because usually as a photographer, if you apply for a press pass, they just put you on the guest list. So you don't have to buy the ticket, and then they give you your little
00:08:10
Speaker
wristband or whatever, once you get there to be like, Hey, I'm press. Um, but the way I did it, and I didn't realize that a lot of people don't know this, but when you're trying to go for press passes, you have to like reach out to either the band or the venues, like management team. Um, and then they're basically like, sure you can do it or no fuck off. Um, or they just don't write you back. That happens a lot, but.
00:08:38
Speaker
Yeah, so I got approved through State Champs, assumed I was only going to be doing the first three songs for State Champs and ended up being able to do
00:08:46
Speaker
the first three songs for all five bands that were there last night. So that's really exciting. The first three songs. Why? And then they, and then they rotate it out with another photographer. No. So here's how it goes is, um, as someone who's not the band's touring photographer, you, if you're a pride, if you're approved for a press pass, you get the first three songs in the photo pit, which is where like the crowds blocked off. It's the barricade that's like right in front of the stage. And it's the space between the barricade and the stage. Right.
00:09:14
Speaker
So they do that because when you're approved it's a lot easier to take your pictures when you're not worrying about people being all up in your shit. So it's first three songs for each band and then they're like okay like you can come back for the next one but like pretty much get out of the way. So they're looking at you like you're paparazzi.
00:09:35
Speaker
a little bit, it was kind of funny because that's the first press pass I've gotten approved for for myself. So it was a very new experience for me, but I, people would not stop looking at me and it made me so, it made me feel so weird. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, no, I'm not with the band. I'm just, I'm just here to take pictures. So we were talking the other day.
00:10:01
Speaker
All three of us. And you mentioned that we are the best looking band you've ever taken pictures for. I just wanted to bring that up so you can elaborate more on that. Oh, obviously. If you guys don't know what Jake and Kyle look like, they are complete gods. Absolutely built. Tallest, tallest shit. Just the sexiest people you will ever meet in your entire life. It's absolutely incredible. In fact, it makes my job really hard because it's completely blinding.

Favorite Concerts and Band Experiences

00:10:23
Speaker
Like I, I really, I have to take a break. I have to look to the side or close my eyes for a short period of time, just so shit's taken care of.
00:10:30
Speaker
And on other photo shoots, your lens doesn't like break or anything. No, it only breaks with you guys. The amount of money that I've spent replacing my lenses every time we shoot together. So beautiful, right? Yeah, no. Okay. Um, real quick. I wanted to talk about this in the intro. Um, Kaylee,
00:10:49
Speaker
has taken pictures for bands like waster, hold close, pavements, hot mulligan, grayscale, Robert Henry band. Isn't that bluegrass? Oh, it's country. It's country straight up country. The only country band I've ever shot for. Was it fun? No. Uh, bearings, just friends, real friends for your strong and most recently state champs. Like, did we miss any?
00:11:18
Speaker
No, that was all of them. That was, that was it. What was your, uh, what do you think your favorite, um, your favorite shoot has been or like favorite concert that you were at where you were shooting? What has been like the best help me out here. What's been the most fun?
00:11:38
Speaker
I'm going to get a little mushy on you guys because I'm going to tell you right now, it was obviously the first time I ever shot for a band, which was you guys. That day was fun 2018. Yes. It was very fun for me. Um, but no, it was definitely that first live show with you guys, um, at Ching Reaction. That was the first one. I thought you did, I thought you did the Canyon or was that later? I think that might've been after afterwards. Yeah. Cause it was like October.
00:12:04
Speaker
Beginning of October for chain reaction and then the Canyon one was like for Halloween. Okay. Were you painted Jesse? Actually, yeah, I'm pretty sure it was me, Jesse and Madison trying to paint in. For those of you that don't know, I guess Jesse, I wasn't at the show, but Jesse was the devil for the Halloween show and he got painted red. He was also the devil in one of our skits that we just did. Any new shows you're going to be going to as a photographer?
00:12:33
Speaker
not as of right now. Um, there's been some bands in the works that I'm really hoping to hear back from. Um, but nothing's set in stone yet. Like the same sort of situation press. Yeah. Yeah. A little bit of that, but I also have, um, talked with a few bands of possibly touring. It's mostly a like,
00:12:57
Speaker
budgets type thing, um, if they're able to make that work. So we'll see what happens. Oh, you're at the concert with my brother last night. I saw him. I saw him a few times. He came up and said hi and whatnot. Um, I thought you guys were like going there together. I was like, that was the original plan. I wasn't sure how my situation was going to go down. So Emily came with me. Um, and she was right on the barricade. So whenever I was in the pitch, she was standing right there next to me. Um, but,
00:13:26
Speaker
Cody and Chuck didn't get there until like later than us. So the crowd had already kind of filled in.

Challenges in Photography

00:13:31
Speaker
Um, so yeah, I didn't really get much of a chance to, to actually hang out. It was mostly pressing buttons the entire time. Who was the best band that played?
00:13:40
Speaker
I'm going to, it's going to sound like typical, but I'm going to say state champs because they, their production was insane. They, was it really? Yeah. Like right off the bat to start off the set, they had streamers coming down during that first song was insane. Um, and then, uh, I don't know what they, what they call it, but like the, the things on, on the stage that like shoots milk up.
00:14:04
Speaker
Yeah. Just like cryo, just cryogenics. Yeah. They had, they had those up there. And then, um, during their very last song, they had a silver confetti that just went everywhere. It was unreal. And they real friends just got a new singer too, right? I think so. Yeah. How was, how was he? Good. He improved the band. He had a lot of energy, which as a photographer is something you can really appreciate because the pictures are never boring.
00:14:30
Speaker
Right. So when you go to shows and you take people's pictures and just the whole like industry itself, what don't you like about it? Um, I think the only thing I can really say I don't like about it is the people that you come in contact with who, uh, just automatically have an attitude, like whether it's like feeling entitled or, uh, just
00:14:57
Speaker
overall is pissed off. That is like the, I hate running across that because if you think about it with everyone who is helping put that show on, it's literally a giant team. No one needs to be in that kind of mindset. Like we're all here for the same reason we're all trying to make this a show for the people who are watching that they'll never forget. Right. Um, so I think that might be the big one. Um, sometimes for me anyways, as a photographer, it's hard to,
00:15:26
Speaker
tell where your boundaries are. I always try to make friends with the security of the venue because if you are nice to them, which you should be anyways, they're less likely to be up in your face all the time. Right. Do you have an ideal shoot? If we're talking ideal, I hate to tell you guys, I would think it's so insane if I was on a tour with all girl bands or just all non-male bands.
00:15:55
Speaker
I know that like the regrets. Yes, I was. Yes, I was going to bring them up or like spirit box or like just anyone who is I could just imagine the energy being around so many of women and non-binaries and whoever it is that is not a man. Right. Fuck men.
00:16:18
Speaker
No offense to you guys, but in an industry where it's pretty much just me and a group of dudes, it's... I can only imagine the... I'm literally speechless. I don't even know how to put into words how incredible that would be.
00:16:35
Speaker
Have you reached out to them? Oh, yes, obviously. You're like, yeah, like every day. Every so often, the second I heard they put out a new song, I was like, oh, maybe this means a tour is coming. So I emailed their management immediately. I was like, hey. Can you reply? Do you need anybody? No. Maybe I'm not there yet. It'll happen. It'll happen. They probably have a male photographer. Rip. You've got a huge resume already. I know. You know what's crazy?
00:17:03
Speaker
Is that I've had someone comment on that where they're like, you are so young. Like, how is your resume this built? And I'm like, I don't fucking know. Like, I just work here. So it's going to happen. It's going to happen for you. I'm ready for it. The regrets with Kayla Garrett as her photographer. If we don't, if we don't get to her first.
00:17:25
Speaker
Maybe we'll open for the regrets. Could you imagine? Oh my God, I would lose my shit. That wouldn't be ideal. That would work as we'd be there. Us men. That wouldn't be ideal for Kaylee. Too much testosterone there. Sorry, not ideal. So if it came down to it where it was like PCL world tour, like we're the shit.

Tropical Goth Zine and Inspirations

00:17:48
Speaker
And then it's either PCL or regrets.
00:17:54
Speaker
Oh. Same time, like you had to pick. It's just. What would you do? Oh, come on, you guys know I choose you. OK. You know I would. You know I would. So that's your ideal. OK, update. I changed my answer. Ideal shoot. PCL is headlining. I'm the opening band. You're the opening band. Are you playing the instruments? The camera. Yeah.
00:18:23
Speaker
Anything that's useful to bands? No. All right. Let's talk about your, uh, your, your zine that you've been doing. Sure. No, I've just seen the first one. It's a, it's a digital magazine. Oh, is that what we were going to do for a PCL bar? Yeah. And we're going to do it. Kaylee stole our idea.
00:18:41
Speaker
I didn't steal your idea. I was, you know, what's insane is that I had been like talking about it. I kept telling my mom, I was going to do

Music Recommendations and Closing

00:18:49
Speaker
it. And I like a blog, a zine. So I started kind of playing around with like what I wanted to include in a zine. And then you guys were like, Hey, you guys texted me like after I started putting it together and you were like, Hey, you want to do this? And I was like, Oh my God, you should like absolutely do that.
00:19:07
Speaker
And then I kind of was I kind of took that as a sign like I should just do it I should just go for it So I started putting stuff together. It's called the tropical goth scene. I call it that because I've always had like Like one step in the I'm goth and one step in the I'm from Hawaii. Yeah, so I
00:19:30
Speaker
I didn't feel like it was necessary for me to pick a side because that's just not who I am. I kind of whatever I'm feeling that day is what we're going with. Yeah. So I thought it was pretty fitting for a zine title. I thought it was cool. I like it. Thank you. I like the vibe of it and it looks bitchin. Where can people find that?
00:19:50
Speaker
I have it linked in my Instagram. Um, really any of my social media, they're all at real Kales. I have one of those e-biosite things where it's like a link that you put in your bio that has all of your other links. Yeah. Your only fans and all that. Yep. All of it. All of it's there. Let's see. Should we do our music Rex? Sure. Oh yeah. Let's do that. Do they have to be current releases? Okay. Does not have to be current.
00:20:17
Speaker
All right. We're going to do some music recommendations for you guys now. I'm going to go first because, you know, I just know it'll piss Kaylee off because I'm not letting ladies go first. You're a feminist equality. You can go first. Oh, right. Right. Exactly. Absolutely. Yeah. No, I totally not even feel like she has to go first just because she's a woman. How dare you, Kyle?
00:20:41
Speaker
Alright, this is by a band called Daggermouth, and the song is called You Do This as a Fad, You Do This as a Living.
00:21:06
Speaker
Well, thanks for that, Kyle. I'm gonna let Kaylee go next, because I'm a gentleman, unlike you, Kyle. So, Kaylee, any recommendations? Okay, I've had this one on repeat, like, all week. I don't know what it is, but it's called Drag Me Down by Eat Your Heart Out.
00:21:51
Speaker
Jake, your turn. That was awesome. I've been listening to a lot of Grayscale. I just put the whole album on repeat and there's not like a specific song. I do like Bad Love. That might be one of my favorites.
00:22:18
Speaker
And to bring this thing to a close, first of all, I just want to say, Kaylee, it's been great talking with you. I'm having so much fun. I love everything that you've done for us. We really appreciate it. You worked with us for a while when we didn't have any money and we're all starting out and you never asked for a single.
00:22:41
Speaker
frickin penny. Um, and like, yeah, we just really appreciate that. We, uh, highly recommend that if you need a photographer and she's in your area to reach out to Kaylee Garrett, can you give our listeners, um, just, uh, the directory to where to find your social media, um, and tell us what other projects you have going on. And if you have anything else that you'd like to say to everybody,
00:23:09
Speaker
So all of my socials are at real Kales on everything re al ka yls for those of you who don't know how to spell Because I'm inclusive No projects right now It's kind of like one of those things where it's a little up in the air at the moment. So we'll see what happens but in all seriousness to those of you that are listening who are
00:23:36
Speaker
either women, non-binaries, or trans, I would like to direct this message towards you because getting involved in the music industry can be hard for those of us who are not already well established. So I guess my message is don't be afraid.
00:23:52
Speaker
Don't be scared to put yourself out there. You're gonna get a little bit of pushback from the men in the industry who are not a fan of us being around or have preconceived notions on what the music industry is supposed to be like, but it doesn't have to be that way. Yeah, just, you know, go for it. I'm always open if you need to DM me and ask questions. I'm always there.
00:24:17
Speaker
And yeah, just don't be scared. There's room for all of us here. We need more representation. We need more people on tour that bring a diverse environment for everyone. And go for it. Don't be afraid.
00:24:32
Speaker
Love it. This has been a micro pods by your favorite band, PCL. You could follow us on Instagram at PCL underscore CA, uh, check out our website, www www.pclbandca.com. Um, we got some exciting stuff coming. Uh, the album is
00:24:56
Speaker
upon us. It is coming. How close? It's close. That's hot. It's close. It is very close. And we are going to leave you guys with a joke from Jake. Go ahead, go. I wasn't prepared for that.
00:25:30
Speaker
I mean, that band that just opened for us, they suck. Yeah, they're god-awful. But I think the sound's even worse here. Yeah, it's pretty bad. This is like the fifth time we played here and the sound sucks, and it gets worse every time. It's so bad. You don't get our intro, you know what I mean? It's just... It's just... Just fuck, man. Are you even ready to play? Do you remember all the songs? Yeah, there's just that one, just, you know, going into the chorus for, it doesn't matter. I mean, it's a pretty simple fucking song.
00:25:59
Speaker
But, uh, what's that, what's that lyric that you're saying? Because that's my cue to take off my pants. Take off your pants? You're gonna do that? I was thinking about it. I thought you were gonna backflip. Oh, I've already done the backflip, Jake. I've already done the backflip. It's time to take off my pants. I think you can take your pants off whenever. Why is there Madonna playing?
00:26:19
Speaker
It's Cindy Lauper. Is that a gaggle of female aliens? With three titties? Each? I think they're coming towards us, dude. Just be cool, be cool, be cool. Kind of hot, dude. Oh, that's a stupid Kyle. Yeah, okay. Are you Jake and Kyle? You might be. Who are you, ladies? We are hot chicks. We can see that. What's up? You guys want some backstage passes or anything? You guys want to come in? Kyle's playing with his pants off later.
00:26:43
Speaker
As interesting as that sounds, I need to know if you're PCL. Because if you are, you need to come back to my home planet immediately. What's your home planet? You're from planet 69. Alright, yeah, we're in. What's the catch? Every hot chick on this planet has been begging and begging for PCL to play a live show.
00:27:04
Speaker
Can't turn out a beggar. We're down to come to Planet 69. That sounds like a blast. What else do we need to do? I need to be the new lifeline for PCLpalooza. That's tough. We do have this contract a little bit with this scumbag alien. I think you guys should compete for it. I'm a hot chick. I don't compete for anything.
00:27:23
Speaker
That good confidence is gonna help you win. Yeah, I'd say just bring that confidence down to PCL Palooza 3. We might be able to work something out, but yeah, we're down to play that show on your planet. How do we get there? You should come with us. Oh yeah, we'll come. We'll come with you guys. It needs to be in sync in order for it to open the portal.
00:27:43
Speaker
Okay, so we all, wait, you're saying we all need to be coming right now? Yes, together. Okay. Otherwise it won't work and we'll have to keep trying. Oh yeah, I mean, shit. I hope we don't mess up. Yeah. Synchronizing orgasm in three, two, one. Oh god! Oh my god, I'm coming!
00:28:08
Speaker
You're done? I'm done. Did it work? I'm ready for a nap. Did it work for you? No, but come this way to the stage, please. The portal's open? The portal's somehow open. Okay. Sweet. All right, yeah, I kind of want to take a nap. That was easy. Yeah, I would just kind of feel like a nap. There are no naps here. I'm ready for bed. Ready for bed. All right, let's fucking play the show, Jake. Okay. MicroPods by PCO.
