What’s better than beer and metal? That’s right NOTHING! On this episode, Kyle and Jake are joined by Tanner Kahn and Loody of the Alt Metal band Veiled Alpha for a beer flight tasting and to talk about their music, how they formed, and their ideas on marketing and song writing. This band is SICK and everyone should definitely be listening to their catalog.

Later, we recap our best pop punk band tournament bracket, which is currently happening on our Instagram. We also feature a voice message from a friend regarding this bracket, which we received through our Speakpipe. You can leave us a message here: speakpipe.com/pcl

Introduction to Veiled Alpha and New Track

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome to the PCL Podcast. Today we've got Veiled Alpha in the studio. We're going to be talking about Say I Want You, which just dropped last week. And then we also got a Speakpipe. Let's go. Thanks for joining us, everybody.

Meet the Hosts: Kyle and Jake

00:00:19
Speaker
My name is Kyle McGraw. I'm the host of the show. And this is the PCL Podcast, a show about a rock band from Southern California.
00:00:26
Speaker
And I am Jake Sperling and I'm the co-host. So together we are PCL. This podcast is about our band putting out music on our own and having a damn good time while we do it. The camera's right in front of you, Jake. It's this one. I'm like, which, what camera are you looking at? I'm looking at, just looking at my computer. Well, look at the, look at the camera. My camera's all the way down here. And say something seductive to the listeners or viewers. It's seductive. Make eye contact with them and
00:00:55
Speaker
Say I want you. Say I want you.

Release of 'Say I Want You' and Reception

00:01:00
Speaker
Speaking of that, uh, say I want you just dropped, um, last week, actually last Wednesday. Uh, if you've listened to it already, thank you so much. Uh, we're getting those stream numbers up by the day. Isn't that right, Jake?
00:01:15
Speaker
Hell yeah it is. So we had a little surprise with this one that we didn't really talk about. We mentioned it a little bit. Yeah we think we posted about it once but it wasn't like really in detail. We just said we had a surprise. Like the sub-subsection of like an Instagram post.
00:01:32
Speaker
Yeah, but I hope people were surprised. I thought it was a good surprise. I thought it was pretty tight. I will tell you this. I was, uh, I was super stoked to, uh, listen to it like the first time and actually see that the transition that we fucking, that we put together actually worked.
00:01:51
Speaker
Yeah, I know I told you earlier, but I was just happy that I can finally go to the gym and listen to our music on Apple Music and not my phone's files. I know. Trying to scroll through and find which version is the right version. Now we don't have to do that because there's only one version now. Everything else has been destroyed.
00:02:17
Speaker
Now, just the rest of the songs, I have to do that. And those are coming. Those are coming, everybody. Real

Veiled Alpha's Beginnings and Music Style

00:02:22
Speaker
soon. So as we mentioned today, or as we mentioned earlier, we have the band Veiled Alpha with us. They're going to be joining us here in a bit. It's great. We got Tanner Kond. He's the bassist. And Ludi, he is the guitarist and kind of like the mastermind behind their whole project.
00:02:46
Speaker
It's great that I love talking to these guys. I went to Musicians Institute with them and yeah, they've been jamming and failed Alpha for a while and I just started listening to them a few months ago.
00:03:02
Speaker
They've got an EP out called Behind the Mask, and it's amazing. It's alternative metal, so if you're one of those people that can't do the screamo stuff, but you still like the technicality and the sound of the music, I definitely would say give it a listen. It's well worth your time. Every single one of them, they're just super talented.
00:03:31
Speaker
Yeah, they're great. And I'm looking forward to another interview with them. Maybe we'll get all the guys in here. If we could fit them all in here. We're basically working with like two cameras, but you know, it could work. We could do the webcam like what we're doing with you right now.

Casual Beer Tasting Session

00:03:49
Speaker
Another cool thing that we did in this podcast is we did a little beer tasting.
00:03:56
Speaker
Um, before we started rolling, I looked, Jake, I looked you dead in the eyes and I said,
00:04:06
Speaker
Yeah, we're gonna do the beer tasting, but I don't wanna make that the first thing that we do. And then we started rolling, and that was the first, that was the first thing that we did. Sounds about right. But it was good, I thought it ended up working well. The beers that we tasted, they're all paperback beers from a brewery in Glendale, California. This particular one right here is super fun, hazy hop. One thing that's cool is if you scan the QR codes,
00:04:35
Speaker
right there, and I talk about this with those guys. They have little comic books, so if I put that close to the screen, you won't be able to scan it because you're watching this on your phone probably.

Shoutout to Zencastr

00:04:50
Speaker
Anyways, please welcome Tanner Khan and Ludi of Veiled Alpha.
00:04:57
Speaker
Real quick before we get into this podcast, I just want to throw a quick shout out to Zencaster. Zencaster is the platform that Jake and I record these podcasts on and we also distribute these podcasts via Zencaster. Zencaster has kind of been our all-in-one solution and another cool thing about Zencaster is they have a monetization feature
00:05:19
Speaker
built in the software that can help even the smallest podcasts grow and make a little bit of money doing it. We have yet to get there, but we will. We don't have a promo code, but we love using Zencaster and we encourage you guys to give it a shot as well if you're interested in doing a podcast. All right, well, let's get back to the podcast. Go check out Zencaster.
00:06:40
Speaker
Thank you guys for being here. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you for having us. We're super, super stoked to have you here. Not really sure exactly where this conversation is going to go, but I think it's going to start with the beer tasting that we got going on. Oh, shit.
00:06:57
Speaker
Couple months ago I went to this beer tasting event and I saw this artwork right at this at this beer tent and I was like, yo, who does your fucking art? The dude gave me his contact information. It's this dude that lives in in Italy. His name is
00:07:19
Speaker
France. No, Italy. I think I don't know. I'm not sure. Um, his name's right next to each other. Yeah, they're real close. They're real close. Yeah. So we're doing a beer tasting. We, uh, I, I believe Tanner, you, you love drinking beer, right? Oh, you're, you're a beer guy. Yeah, definitely.
00:07:39
Speaker
That fucking matches us like perfectly. That's what we do. We get fucked up before we play. Exactly. Do you guys, does everybody in the band drink pretty much? I think everybody drinks, but I'm probably the heaviest drinker. Oh yeah. Probably. Usually I don't drink that much. Yeah. What do you do? What do you drink if you drink?
00:08:06
Speaker
I'm more like vodka fans, so yeah, I don't drink beer. If you drink beer too much, then you got full so much. You get a belly like I do. That's what happens. I'm starting to get one, too. So real quick, I'm going to make this quick. We got the under pressure pale ale. It's 5.5%. We got the tucked in by strangers.
00:08:32
Speaker
And we got the super fun hazy hop and the bunny with the chainsaw. My personal favorite. That is actually my favorite. We're going to start with the under pressure. That's what we're going to go left to right. That's right to left for me, left to right for you guys. Um, and then we're just going to get into, uh, talking about music. And if you guys, you know, have anything to say about the beers,
00:08:59
Speaker
Yeah, music and beer. That's the fucking, that's the best way to do things. All right.

Veiled Alpha's Formation and COVID Challenges

00:09:05
Speaker
Well, cheers. Cheers. Cheers. All right. So first and foremost, I think I want to start with who's in the band.
00:09:20
Speaker
Tell us a little bit give us a background All right, so Pretty much. I'm on me Tana Khan. I'm on bass Ludie over here. He's on guitar and then we have our drummer Matt Arsenault and Our vocalist is Jack Campo Campo, right? Yeah. Yeah, Jack Campo. How did how did you guys all meet?
00:09:46
Speaker
Well, first, I met Tanner in MI. After that, I met Matt through the Instagram. So I asked him if you want to join to my band. He said yes. And also after that, he recommended me the vocal, the jack. So that's how we... How long have you guys been a band?
00:10:09
Speaker
Actually we were formed in 2021 right? Yeah we formed like 2021 like fully formed in 2021 but yeah we it was it was funny because we throughout like the the writing process and recording we actually never met as a full band like in person
00:10:33
Speaker
No shit? Even though I was in South Korea back then. So you guys were all doing this like all remote basically? Pretty much. At the beginning, yeah. Yeah. I mean, it was COVID too, so. Yeah. Well, that's crazy. How did you guys collaborate on stuff like remotely?
00:10:53
Speaker
Well, I don't live too far away from Ludy, so it wasn't as hard for me to meet up with him and go to his little, what was it, TK rehearsals, the lockout studio? Yeah. Yeah, we'd go to TK Studios and we'd review the songs and then we'd each go in kind of like one by one and record like separately.
00:11:18
Speaker
Okay, it all got mashed together But in the end it fit perfectly. Yeah, so so ludi so basically you have these songs written And you gave it to two. Yeah to the guys. Yeah. Yeah, so I made the instrumental parts first and after that I sent it to the
00:11:36
Speaker
guys here so like and they made their own parts on it so yeah that's how we did and uh probably last june right last year i came to came back to united states again so yeah since then we could record together jam together yeah
00:11:52
Speaker
That's kind of like how we do it too. Like one of us will come up with an idea. And then yeah, we just, I think the more musicians in a room, the better the outcome will be, you know? And yeah, we just like expand on shit that way. What's the, what's the dynamic between all you guys as a band?
00:12:14
Speaker
Like I said, we never really met in person until pretty much our first rehearsal, what, the day before our first gig? No shit. Or was it like a week?
00:12:30
Speaker
Well, yeah, I guess so actually we took a music video before record the music. Oh, really? Yeah, and then and then once once the the recording was final That's

Rehearsal Coordination and Challenges

00:12:42
Speaker
when we released the music video with it. But yeah, I mean, yeah concept wise like everybody has been getting along with Everybody pretty well. That's good. It's been awesome that that is good and everybody lives
00:12:57
Speaker
Pretty close to each other? Actually not. Yeah, he lives in the Menifee. Oh, okay. Where did you live? Menifee, near Temecula. Okay. Yeah, so like, it's almost like two hours away from here. And I'm the guy from South Korea, but now I live in Glendale. And his hometown is San Luis Obispo. Yeah, and I live in Koreatown now, so. I mean, me and him are still in the general Hollywood area.
00:13:26
Speaker
But yeah, like Matt's out in Yerba Linda and then Jack's out in Menifee. So how often do you guys get together to like to rehearse and shit?
00:13:37
Speaker
Actually, we have rehearsal whenever we need, right? Yeah. We just kind of find like a day we all can get together with our little messed up schedules and stuff like that. Probably once a week. Yeah. That's good. Once a week or every other week.
00:13:57
Speaker
We usually like before we play a gig, we'll be fucking jamming. It'll be like our first rehearsal like at 10 a.m. before the fucking. See, I'm still sleeping. I'm still sleeping at that. Yeah. So you're talking about so you pretty much read all these instrumental tunes. Did you have like lyrics or anything written or did you kind of let
00:14:19
Speaker
so like usually just I only write the instrumental parts so basically I'm a guitar player and I'm not talented at singing or something like that so like I let our singer to do that so he comes up with the words and everything but basically instrumental what you put out that's pretty much what
00:14:37
Speaker
You guys are doing and then you guys just put your your spin on everything. Yeah, cool Well, let's move on to the second beer. Yeah, let's do that. So what is this? This is the tucked in tucked in by strangers It's uh, I actually kind of like that one better
00:15:01
Speaker
Yeah, it's got more all-around kind of like tasty. This was kind of a little flat. A little bit, yeah. So Ludi, you're from South Korea. Yeah. So did you come here just for music? Yeah, for music. But I came here in 2018. So that was for the MI. So after that, being foreigner here is very tough. I have to keep renewing my visa and everything.
00:15:31
Speaker
And after I graduated MI, so probably it was 2020, COVID hit the world. So I had to come back to my country. And then I was struggling so hard with my visa. It was just really hard to get an American visa. And I have to spend a lot of money for that. But anyway, I got it anyway. So I came back last year.
00:15:55
Speaker
So do you go back and forth? Or is it so you have the visa, you pretty much have to stay here until it expires, and then you go back and do the whole process all over again? Yeah, I can. And also like now I'm applying for a green card right now. Okay, so you want to stay? Yeah, of course. Yeah, I love this country.
00:16:14
Speaker
Yeah, and Villed Alpha must go on, so you have to figure out how to stay here. Is there like a metal scene or anything like that in South Korea? No. Nothing. Really? So the problem of South Korea is it's a really small country. So it's smaller than California, so there's no local scenes or something like that. So everything is so focused on one city called Seoul. So for example, in California, you guys have cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
00:16:44
Speaker
In Korea, there's no local scenes like this. If you want to be a musician, you have to play only in one city, which is ridiculous. That's the reason why I came to United States. Is there not a lot of diverse type of genres of music? No, not really. Is it just

Tanner's Hollywood Anecdotes

00:17:00
Speaker
K-pop? Just K-pop and that's it. Yeah.
00:17:03
Speaker
K-pop's all right though, right? Yeah, but you know like I'm not a title dancer I I had one we don't have to be by the way you play guitar so at the bar that I work at we have metal Mondays Yeah, absolutely love and but one of our bartenders was like, oh we should have another music night and they're like What about kpop Thursdays and I'm like, I will not work that day. I will take myself off the schedule Yeah
00:17:32
Speaker
Do they have live performances at the bar that you work at? We actually, it's never really been a thing, but we actually have recently started doing that. Our bartender, her name's Soul, she's a bassist in the band called The Vigilz here in L.A. and they're kind of like an 80s
00:17:55
Speaker
punk kind of like, I would say punk and David Bowie mix. It's interesting. But it's good. But they've played there twice now. It's a very, very small venue, very small bar. There's really no room. Is it in Hollywood? Yeah. You know where Lucky Strike is on Hollywood Island? Yeah. Right across the street. Oh, cool. Yeah.
00:18:16
Speaker
Those are always good vibes though, like little house shows sort of a thing. Yeah, we have some. Is that what it's like? Every Thursday we have a trivia night. So we have one of our regulars come in with some cool little questions and winter gets like 50% off their tab. Second place gets 25% and we just play really good music. It's very dark lit, very rocker kind of like cocktail dive. It's called tower. There's not a lot of those.
00:18:44
Speaker
No, no. I mean, Hollywood, yeah, here and there, but none that are actually, like, good to go to. Yeah. Sorry, I interrupted you. What was the name of it? Oh, no, you're fine. It's called Powerhouse. Powerhouse. Powerhouse. Very good. We'll have to go. On Mondays. Yeah. Metal Mondays. Yep. Get fucked up on a Monday. Hell yeah. Tanner's a bouncer there.
00:19:09
Speaker
Yeah, are you mm-hmm nice? Do you do you pack heat? No, no see the only heat I have are my vocal cords. Oh, yeah Just your two guns Speaking of that that's gonna segue us into a little jam session Ludie's gonna play guitar and Tanner's gonna sing for us. Oh
00:19:32
Speaker
But no we're talking we're talking about venues a little bit what what's what's been your guys's favorite venue that you played out recently probably so far like whiskey
00:19:43
Speaker
Whiskey, I really loved Whiskey. I've played there once before with one of my other bands and it was absolutely awesome. Same thing goes for our gig over there. It was absolutely a lot of fun. When you play on the Sunset Strip right there and you actually do the Rockstar thing, it feels so much better.
00:20:07
Speaker
Yeah, you feel so much more accomplished Yeah, even that like the first day like the one one tour we did like five years ago We played we played at the Roxy. It was it was really cool. I mean the songs were
00:20:21
Speaker
Not there. They were in progress. In progress, yeah. We'll go with that. But just being there was super cool. I remember there was this bar, I think it's right next to the whiskey. And we walked up there and we had food and beer or whatever before we had to set up our stuff. And we're walking out and this car pulls up next to us.
00:20:40
Speaker
You remember that? Oh yeah, it was Post Malone. Yeah, Post Malone was just sitting there because we were all sitting out there talking, and our buddy had a cigarette, and Post Malone comes up. He's like, hey, you guys have another cigarette? So we're just sitting there talking to him. I go, OK. Just for like 10 seconds. So we're playing at the rock scene. He was like in an Uber. That's crazy. Yeah, it was pretty tight.
00:21:00
Speaker
We played Chain Reaction twice now, and then we played the Vulcan open-air metal battle at stages.

Band Dynamics and Musical Influences

00:21:10
Speaker
That sounds sick. That was a lot of fun. We couldn't make it. Yeah, but I mean they- Oh wait, you couldn't make it? It was something like contest or something. Yeah, it's a contest. You guys have heard of the Vulcan open-air metal festival. Yeah.
00:21:26
Speaker
Yeah, it's basically a competition for your local bands throughout the US. They have different days that they have where we played the first medal battle round and then the best four of that night move on to the second round.
00:21:50
Speaker
And then the best two or the best one from that one goes on to the next round and it goes throughout the entire U.S. So it's a legit battle of the bands. Yeah. The reason why we didn't move on was mainly just because our sound isn't what gets played at the vacant opener festival, which is understandable. It's more like it's more like black traditional like
00:22:14
Speaker
Yeah, we're not like Norwegian metal. Okay. Yeah, so it's not like metal core. Yeah, exactly
00:22:22
Speaker
Yeah. So like your, your genre, cause there's all these like sub genres and stuff. Now, you know, you can't, no one can keep track of it anymore. Um, alternative metal. I would, right. Isn't that like what you would say? That would probably be the most easy and basic form of what we're describing it. Yeah. Do you guys have any interest in getting somebody that does gutter rolls for you guys?
00:22:49
Speaker
Absolutely. How about you do it? I'm all for gutterals. Would you do it? Would you do it? If I knew how to. If I knew how to, I would be doing it, but no. If it came to it, like, featuring another, like, vocalist or having another, like, even person come in for, like, a solo or something like that, that'd be awesome.
00:23:17
Speaker
Yeah, well speaking of Playing on stage and doing that what's what's your guys a set like? For me, it's very hyped usually like so far. We only played like 25 minutes. Yeah But we play all five songs in our EP and recently we started to cover the Nirvana song Yeah, oh tight. Yeah, it's like a little harder like version of heart-shaped box It slaps. What's your guys's favorite song to play?
00:23:47
Speaker
Would say for me that's beyond the mask. Yeah, same here. So usually we play the film the most for the last three last song mm-hmm I would say the reason why we play it last is mainly just because it's the the title debut of our EP But like we play when we play live it's the last song. Did you guys have like a I guess any thought of like
00:24:14
Speaker
putting the songs in order, was there any thought behind it or is it just other songs? Like the sequencing? I think that's a question for you. So usually we put the most aggressive song at the beginning and after that more relaxing songs we put at the end. So in that order. But then when you play it, it's the other way around.
00:24:41
Speaker
Yeah. You gotta get the crowd fucking fired up, you know?
00:24:46
Speaker
Yeah, and and also I mean if you're like a like if you're starting out like us you're not getting a lot of Headlining gigs and stuff like that. It's good to kind of end on a more hype note like a more Intimate like yeah fish kind of song to kind of capture the crowd, but also be like Alright, what's the next band? Yeah? Yeah
00:25:11
Speaker
Yeah, I know. So you guys said Beyond the Mask is your favorite song to play. Is that your guys' favorite song on the EP? Honestly, yeah. My favorite is On and On. That's mine too. I would say 100%. First listen, when Kyle brought you guys up to me, I'm like, okay, I'll listen to the EP and Beyond the Mask, it's took out
00:25:35
Speaker
like really fast like this is fucking sick and I listen more like a couple times and on and on I don't know what it is but it's just fucking solo right into the breakdown so we listen to beyond the mask coming into this played a little music video before before we started recording these guys were watching me literally rip their music video
00:26:00
Speaker
Like straight from YouTube to mp4. I mean we've all done it in our classes. Yeah a couple times I Mean, yeah Tanner was like, come on, dude. Can't you be a little bit more discreet about that? Want to listen to on and on yeah and put that let's do it listen on and on
00:26:41
Speaker
All right, PCL Podcast listeners, I just want to take a quick second and talk about Printful. Printful is a print-on-demand merch company that we just started using. So basically we are in contact with a bunch of different merch companies to set up our merch and everything was super expensive. We can basically only really get one design without really just putting ourselves in a huge hole. But Printful, we made our account. We designed a whole bunch of different t-shirts or a whole bunch of different merch items.
00:27:10
Speaker
And what's cool about that is we're able to connect it directly to our website to make it super easy to have everything all in one place. We love using Printful. And like you said, Jake, we were looking for a solution to get all this merch that we wanted. Also, another good thing about it, this is a little side note, you can't just give out this merch to people.
00:27:33
Speaker
You know, family, friends, we love you. We want to give you some merch, but it costs. It costs to be a musician and to put this stuff out. So it is a good way for us to be like, we can't do it. We would have to buy it for you. So go check out Printful. It's pretty... Buy your own shit. Our shit. Yeah, buy our shit. Thanks, by the way. We appreciate you, family and friends.
00:28:05
Speaker
All right, guys. Welcome back. We're here with Tanner and Ludi from Veiled Alpha. Before we get back into everything, we're going to go with our third beverage here. Cheers. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun. This one's called Super Fun.
00:28:33
Speaker
If it's paperback, I love it. So what's cool about these beers, I might have fucking said this already. This is probably my favorite one. But the QR code on them, like you scan it and there's fucking, they have like little comic books for every fucking beer that they have. That's pretty tight. Yep. That was super fun. I liked it. You like that one?
00:29:03
Speaker
Yeah, I'd probably like it more if it was cold and right out of the can but Well here let's let's get through the fucking beer Straight off the tap might as well just get to the fourth one
00:29:18
Speaker
This one, we got Bunny with a chainsaw. I absolutely love the name of this and the cover art for it as well. That's the best one. Because what's cuter than a murderous bunny? I know, seriously. Especially it was just Easter. I was just talking about the fucking, the comic book with the fucking beers. Yeah. So this one,
00:29:43
Speaker
Basically, the story behind the bunny with the chainsaw is there's this farmer that fucking killed this bunny's parents. Oh, and he goes on a rampage? Bunny stew. Yeah. And then he fucking- Rampage. Yeah, exactly. And then he fucking killed the farmer and then fed it to the other bunnies. He's pretty fucking tight. That's pretty metal. Yeah, that's pretty brutal. Yeah.
00:30:12
Speaker
I know we had a great conversation during the break and we wanted to talk about that again. So we were talking about pretty much marketing and promoting your guys' band and how you guys do that. So if you guys want to just take it away.
00:30:28
Speaker
So yeah, usually I do that but have you guys heard something called YouTube ad? Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, that's how we got like our views or something like that and also run the Instagram ads or something like that and nowadays 95% of Company or people who's talking about music business or fucking scammers. Yeah 100% with bots and shit. Yeah
00:30:53
Speaker
like all the bots. We were talking earlier about the Hollywood Bowl competition. Yeah. Like it was like paid votes. Yeah, paid votes and shit like that. We're literally the fucking top of the list for the whole fucking time. Yeah, we're like, we haven't fucking played live in fucking eight years. Ever. No, I don't know if it's been eight years, but it's been a while since we played live and we're fucking like, like, could you imagine if we actually won that shit?
00:31:21
Speaker
And we're like, fuck, we gotta play the Hollywood Bowl with the fuck we gonna do. Yeah, like the last time we played, there was probably 200 people there. And then...
00:31:30
Speaker
I think more than anything it was just like to see like what kind of support we could get and we got some great support but like a fucking battle of the bands like what you guys were talking about that's fucking dope yeah that's like way more legit but what we were saying about like the marketing first and foremost you got to have great music which you guys do you know so that's fucking
00:31:53
Speaker
That's there. And then it needs to find the right audience, the people that, you know, like us that will listen to it and be like, you know, you want to come do this? Or the people that will be like, you got to check out this band, which I've done, I've like definitely send some of my homies like you guys' music. Yeah, I don't know. Like any so YouTube ads, Instagram ads, that's how that's how you find them, you think? And also like we have worked with like one
00:32:23
Speaker
promotion company they have like artists roasters or something like that and like many famous name was on that roaster and so I sent them email so like I want to work with them
00:32:39
Speaker
But they want us to pay them like a few thousand bucks. Obviously we expected organic promotion for the real people. But if we ask for the more Spotify streams or YouTube views, they just buy that. Yeah, that's fucked. That's so fucked.
00:33:02
Speaker
So I recommend you to not work with the people who ask you to pay their fake and scam. It's not worth it.
00:33:12
Speaker
I've tried many, but most of paid promotion is not worth it. And you have to keep reaching out to the music label or something like that. And also, as an independent artist, there's a limit. Of course, now it's TikTok and Instagram. All these online shows are very big.
00:33:35
Speaker
The best way to promote our music is reaching out to the record label, and that's the only way to make it work. Yeah, and they got to see that, like I said, one, you got fucking great music, and two, you got some sort of star power, you know? And they'll be like, yeah, let's fucking take a chance with these guys. Do you guys make TikTok videos?
00:34:01
Speaker
Not yet. We don't, but I think we should because I do with Unconfined and it's gotten us a pretty good following off of TikTok. So now we're more focused on the like Instagram and because you know like like recently I've made my TikTok account failed offer but I don't know like without any reason that account got suspended so we cannot log into that account anymore.
00:34:27
Speaker
And also, isn't TikTok about to be like banned? I think so. They're talking about that. They're talking about that. They'll come up with some sort of alternative for it, you know? Or just some restrictions on it. Honestly, instead of OnlyFans, I think it should be OnlyBans. OnlyBans. I like that. I fucking like that. And have like OnlyFans for like bans and shit. Or you could just...
00:34:54
Speaker
Do porn. Yeah. Or you just do porn. Or you just do your band shit on OnlyFans. I don't know. We can make our music videos and put it on Pornhub.

Marketing Challenges and Fan Engagement

00:35:05
Speaker
Yeah, we were talking about doing that that one time. Yeah, we should try that. I wonder what happened. I mean, it wouldn't get taken down. Ludi, you handle most of the social media for you guys? Yeah, social media. Almost everything, yeah.
00:35:22
Speaker
Do you do all the editing too? Yeah, video, yeah. I'll take a... I'll do... I'll do tucked in. I think that one is... Yeah. You guys are gonna tuck me into bed, right? Before you guys leave. Oh, absolutely. Singing well with eyes. Nice.
00:35:52
Speaker
Cheers. Cheers. Where'd you get those? Bevmo. Oh, cool. Yeah. Bevmo's got all the best fucking beers. I really do. Fucking 20 bucks for a four pack.
00:36:07
Speaker
I guess that's not that bad. You mean the four cans up the beer? Four cans, 20 bucks. I mean you can get a 30 pack of Corey's life for 20 bucks. Yeah, I have one of those too. All right, so I think we should get into the fucking, like the, we've kind of covered all the basic stuff. First I want to know the name.
00:36:32
Speaker
Oh, the veiled alpha, like how we made them. Oh, so like I was watching video about the Navy seal and like they were talking about alpha male. So I love that word alpha. So like, but I don't want to make a band name like alpha male or something like that, which sounds stupid. So like, yeah, I just put failed in front of the alpha. So like, that's how we came up with the name.
00:36:58
Speaker
and it kind of fits the kind of theme with our first ep to beyond the mask like it's a it's a veil over your face yeah yeah well did you did you come up with the artwork too uh yeah so you're you literally you literally do it all yeah pretty much that's insane jake you gotta set it up man that's something called i can use garage band pretty good
00:37:28
Speaker
Passion. I remember hanging out in Best Buy when the garage band first came out to be a thing, and I was sitting there looking at the computers and laptops, messing around with their little garage fans, and they're all my friends, they're all looking for new stuff. Boom. I think this is a fucking great topic to get into. How did you guys get into music in general? Give me your origin story.

Ludi's Musical Journey

00:37:53
Speaker
Give me your origin story. Yeah. What's your origin?
00:37:57
Speaker
So like actually I was a violin player so like as a kid I wanted to be a conductor in orchestra so I started to learn the violin and piano and everything but like
00:38:12
Speaker
after so I started to play violin when I was like 10 years old or something like that but after that I lost my interest in classical music and I watched one movie about the rock bands or something like that and I saw Ozzy Osbourne out there and I thought
00:38:30
Speaker
That's my job. That's what I want to fucking do. That's what I remember. Do you remember what movie it was? I don't remember. It was actually like Korean movie. Oh, yeah. Ozzy Osbourne? Ozzy was in a Korean movie? No, no, no. But it was more like documentary. Or was it like a documentary? Documentary, but like...
00:38:49
Speaker
So anyway- Ozzy was speaking Korean? No, no. Hell no. Man in many traits. So after that I wanted to learn guitar, but reputation of rock star is really bad in my country. The rock music is all about drug.
00:39:07
Speaker
like AIDS or something. Yeah, yeah, so exactly so my mom didn't buy me the guitar then so like so But I kept asked her to buy me a guitar so and after that she gave up and finally bought me a guitar So like how old were you 12? Oh my god, or 13? I don't know
00:39:29
Speaker
And you were already shredding then, right? No. I was terrible guitar player till like 15 years old. So like I was only playing something like Smoke on the Water or something like that. And after that I listened to the album Blizzard of Oz by Ozzy Osbourne and I found out Randy Rhodes and
00:39:52
Speaker
So I wanted to learn the song called I don't know remember that you guys know that song. Yeah, so of course like then I couldn't play the song so I Practiced really hard and I thought like if I cannot play this song I'm gonna die so after that I could play that song and since then like
00:40:15
Speaker
I could play a guitar well. I've just been jamming on the guitar. What about you,

Tanner's Musical Path and Education

00:40:20
Speaker
Tanner? How did you get into music? I started out as a guitarist. I even remember pictures of me when I was like three to five years old with little play guitars and stuff like that and a little microphone.
00:40:38
Speaker
me just literally slapping open strings and being like, mommy, look what I can play. I wasn't even playing certain notes. But, uh, no, I started on guitar probably really when I was like 10 years old, probably around there. And then, um, I joined band
00:41:02
Speaker
in junior high, and I played trombone. I played trombone for six years in the school bands. Never did marching, though, just because I was a huge sports kid, like football, baseball, basketball. Marching band kids didn't get much pus.
00:41:21
Speaker
No, no, this especially at my school No, but yeah, I played trombone for about six years and I also started doing jazz bass and they'll side jazz band that they have at the school and
00:41:40
Speaker
Didn't do much with it and then When I really started getting back into music was my two two of my best friends Nick Kano and Aiden de la Rosa shout out to you guys. Love you guys undesirables for life We wanted to play in the senior showcase Yeah, or they did and they needed a guitarist and Aiden goes I know Tanner plays guitar. I'm like I do and so we started kind of like a
00:42:09
Speaker
a ska punk like a heavy ska punk kind of like little band called the undesirables um where i played guitar but then our drummer wanted to move to lead vocals in guitar of course of course that's a typical drummer our our bassist was originally a drummer so naturally i was like i kind of know how to play bass so i'll just
00:42:36
Speaker
move over to base and that's when I fell in love with it. And then years after not playing, my brother, I was sick and tired of just working these dead end jobs and not really doing anything with my life. But my brother reminded me, oh, do you know the School Musicians Institute? And I'm like, I've heard of it. I haven't seen anything about it. And I looked it up.
00:43:04
Speaker
And they're like, you can come to the open house and check it out. So I went down with my, I think it was my mom. Yeah, it was my mom. And immediately walking into MI, like meeting all the teachers. It's crazy. Seeing the studios, seeing the practice rooms, seeing their little stage that they have in there and in the auditorium. Yeah, the main room, the main like, yeah. And I was like,
00:43:32
Speaker
I'm going to MI. That's what I'm fucking doing. Ever since then, I've been hooked on music and nothing but music. Did you ever play the standup bass? See, I took classes. It's a requirement for the associate's degree to take upright bass. Oh, really? But it was so much fun, especially with my teacher, Justin Uprageous.
00:43:59
Speaker
He is an absolute beast on the standup bass. He can walk that motherfucker like a beast. Yeah. And it was just so much fun. Absolutely. It's not fun to move dome like bass. Yeah. Yeah. You got to take that with you to fucking rehearsal. That's why I feel bad about drummers too. I did.
00:44:21
Speaker
I did a band in junior high too, and I actually started out playing bass, and I had to fucking take the upright bass home. I'm a sixth grader, seventh grader, whatever it was. Dude, you're slugging that thing on the... Dude, I had to literally take it and just look like a fucking nerd, because musicians are fucking nerds, right? Oh, yeah.
00:44:43
Speaker
Whether or no matter how cool you are how like how heavy of metal you play you're still fucking there so fucking nerd yeah Yeah, and I had to take it yeah take it all the way from the music room
00:44:59
Speaker
all the way up the street to where my mom would park to pick me up and... Oh, she had the off-site parking to get away from that traffic. She's like, I'm not driving through the parking lot to pick you up. You got to walk in. I'm like, I have the fucking stand up base. Yeah. But yeah, I don't know.
00:45:18
Speaker
Like every once in a while I would take home the electric bass and fucking play some Metallica and shit. Got to. Got to. Well, what are your guys' biggest influences, whether it's like growing up or right now, but like what's the main one where you're like, that's the reason I play music.

Musical Influences and Simplicity Philosophy

00:45:38
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Like, yeah, what's the reason that you guys play music?
00:45:42
Speaker
For me, oh, what was I saying? It's a universal language. Music is the universal language of all people. And I learned that from a very young age, just kinda, I'd accredit it to my parents, just because like,
00:46:09
Speaker
Being a little kid, they're the ones that introduced me to Carlos Santana, The Who, Pink Floyd, Electric Light Orchestra, all these amazing classic rock bands that had also tiny influences everywhere else. And kind of putting that all together, it kind of just
00:46:37
Speaker
full-form me into the music listener that I am today even though I will say year by year my taste has gotten heavier and heavier and heavier and heavier and even though my parents don't like it they still they still love the fact that I'm doing this with my life.
00:47:01
Speaker
Yeah, I would say early on a lot of like classic rock stuff like that, but and then going in the one thing that caught me into Chris or into metal was Christian metal. Yeah, I met like metal core. Yeah, so you're a big Creed fan.
00:47:19
Speaker
I still do like Creed slaps But no, there's a lot of I don't I don't know if you know the band pillar No, they're they're very like Christian like oriented kind of like I would say it's kind of like pod meets
00:47:43
Speaker
Yeah, I would say kind of like POD. POD meets Evanescence. And that kind of got me into the more like rhythmical, like hard rock, metal kind of like vibes. And then it was breaking Benjamin and it just progressed from there.
00:48:02
Speaker
What about you, Ludi? So, honestly, I don't want to talk too much about why I love music, but I do it because it's fucking cool. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's plain and simple to the fact. It really is. Personally, I don't like cucumber, but
00:48:20
Speaker
Like I cannot explain why I don't like cucumber. So like music is same Absolutely amazing. Do not hate on cucumbers Cucumber water. Yeah, I school cucumber water Screw lemons not as good as beer not as good as beer though Not not not as good as this bunny with the chainsaw bunny with the chainsaw
00:48:43
Speaker
Shout out. Does everybody in the band know music theory or like who are the music theory nerds?
00:48:52
Speaker
Probably me. I think yeah, you're the music theory nerd. You went to MI though. You were forced to learn music theory. I was forced. It doesn't mean I like it. But yeah, I know my music theory, but I'm not like fully versed or like an expert on it in any case whatsoever. If we're gonna go with theory, it's gonna be Lutie. Yeah. Lutie's the theory guy.
00:49:22
Speaker
Actually, I'm not Siri guy Siri guy too, but So far I have released more than four albums right now. So I have released three instrumental guitar albums already. No shit. What? Yeah, they slap. Ludy bench is my
00:49:41
Speaker
I'll say it. Do you want to type it in? Lutie Bench is the handle, the artist's name. Bench. B-E-N-S-H. So what's the best advice that you can give other bands or other artists, whether it's advice that you've gotten yourself or advice that you just have from learning on the way?

Advice for Musicians

00:50:08
Speaker
So what I want to say is don't trust anything on the internet. So meet the real people. Try everything that you can do. Send a demo to the record label or something like that. And also don't work with the people who's talking about music business or don't work with the companies like that.
00:50:30
Speaker
Fair enough. Fair enough. What about with like writing music? So I used to compose a song which is very complicated like Jason Richardson or like, you know, like guitar kind of music, you know, but what I think is like make more simple music is much more worse than make a hard music, you know, like I want to make a music that everyone can enjoy. So, so
00:50:58
Speaker
Sometimes simple is the best. Yeah, so that's that's what I want to talk about So like I noticed like in the break you were telling me well I asked you like what kind of bands that you liked and you're like well now I like like Lana Del Rey and like more pop stuff like that Mm-hmm. So like cool. I want to make a music that everyone can listen. So like I want to advise that don't make song too hard and
00:51:25
Speaker
That's difficult for the audience to listen to and understand. If it's too complex, it's not gonna...
00:51:35
Speaker
Like the last gig that we played with that chain reaction we played with, uh, I don't know. You probably played with him too. Uh, Cameron Parkinson, uh, long curly hair. Like I said, like I said, I went to fucking MI for like a year for the guitar certificate program or whatever. And it like, literally I went there for six months because COVID fucking shut it down. So.
00:52:00
Speaker
Playing with Cameron again, hearing the music that him and his band came out with, Hollow Crown. It was really, really good metalcore, kind of like wage war type stuff. Fit for a king kind of like mixed in between. But I remember hanging out with him at MI at like three o'clock in the morning in one of the rehearsal spaces, looking at the whiteboard.
00:52:29
Speaker
and trying to mathematically map out probably about like 16 bars of these weird gentriffs that he was trying to come up with with all these different time signatures and
00:52:46
Speaker
The beat ends on two instead of three this time, but it's gonna switch up to the first on the fourth bar. And we were sitting there for like three and a half, like four hours straight trying to map out just a single song. And it just didn't fall into place. So when it comes to music, most of the time, simple is better.
00:53:15
Speaker
Simple is better and you can progress off of it and kind of work with it, but start off simple.
00:53:24
Speaker
Yes, I agree with you. That's that's what that's what we do. I mean, like, you know, I kind of give Jake a hard time a little bit because he'll just be like, don't think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it, think it. But I don't know. It does. It does kind of progress. You know, you like you got your fucking chord progression, you know, fucking lay that down. Boom. You got your harmony laid out. And then let's fucking write some lyrics to this shit. Come up with a catchy fucking melody.
00:53:54
Speaker
then boom. Then we'll go back with the lead and make it a little more complicated. Or even, you know, cause you got to fucking mix in the rhythmic shit in there too. So get the drums in there at some point. Yeah, I don't know. It is, I like that. Keep it simple at first, progress on that, develop it. That's fucking stellar advice. Cause if you go too fast straight from the start, you're just going to confuse yourself.
00:54:21
Speaker
Yeah, and it's just gonna get tempos don't fucking match up Yeah, just all metals together and they don't know where the hell you are. Yeah, exactly I love that fuck we should have that should have been the basis of the entire podcast But no, I'm glad that I'm glad that we got to talk to you guys tonight And I hope that we can do this again sometime This has been awesome
00:54:47
Speaker
Very soon one more time. Where can people find you guys on social media? What do you guys have coming up? That's like big. Yeah. No, we got a lot of things Coming up here in the near future. That's gonna be great for all of us When it when it comes to our music our our gigs What we've got going on just as a whole whole band But yeah
00:55:15

Welcome back to the PTCL bar. Today we're doing a beer tasting. Biatch! All the beers are by paperback brewing company. This first one is under pressure, pale ale. Pretty fucking good. This next one is tucked in by strangers. It's a perfect beer for pigeon tents. Delicious. This next one is super fun, hazy hop. They all have a comic book. If you scan the QR code, they can check out on their website.
00:57:49
Speaker
This next one is bunny with a chainsaw. His cuteness will cut you to pieces. Yeah, it's definitely my favorite one. Shout out Nana Dela Portra for the artwork. The artwork's cool and the beer's cold. If you like the artwork on these cans, go check out our signal that that dude did. All right, everybody. Welcome back. Kyle, what did you think of the beer flights? Jake, my man. That beer flight was, it was fantastic.
00:58:17
Speaker
I think I mentioned this, getting COVID a couple years back, it really messed with my taste buds to where I absolutely just could not drink IPAs at all.
00:58:35
Speaker
I don't I have no clue. I used to love drinking that it was I thought it was supposed to take your taste buds away I mean it did and I lost I lost my taste and smell for a long time and when they came back Just some things didn't like weren't that great anymore like barbecue just smelled like cigarettes to me I don't know does anybody else have an experience like that I do but I don't put I don't put a cigarette in my cheeseburger and
00:59:05
Speaker
What I was getting at was these paperback beers, these IPAs. They're actually pretty good. And I think I'm kind of working my way. Super cool artwork, too. Absolutely dope artwork. As we talked about in the podcast. Who did you want to shout out? Our fucking awesome merch designer, logo designer, freaking everything designer, Nana de la Porta. Where's he from?
00:59:33
Speaker
He's from Italy. Nana, if you're watching or listening, you rock. I know we've never met in person, but you're the man. I wrote a little song for you, Nana. It goes like this. Nana da la porta, Nana da la porta. Nana da la porta, Nana da la porta. That was it. Should we put that as a hidden track? We should.
00:59:55
Speaker
on the album. It's not going to be fucking hidden anymore. That's what PCL bar originally was going to be. Everybody originally going to be a hidden track. Oh yeah. We were going to put it like the end of a song. Yeah. Like, you know, there's going to be like five minutes of silence and then 43 seconds long. Who knows? We still might do that. We will see. All right. What do we got left in this podcast?
01:00:19
Speaker
So, Jake, I'm glad you asked. We have some updates with the PopPunk tournament bracket. I realized that I missed some bands.
01:00:33
Speaker
Like, as I was doing this, I was like, fuck, missed them, I missed them, I missed them. But that's all right. We want to keep doing stuff like this, and maybe we'll do another pop punk one a little bit later. We want to get some other ones in there. But let us know what tournament brackets we should do. You can do that with a speak pipe at speakpipe.com slash PCL. We also want to hear what you guys think about Say I Want You and Deja Vu.
01:00:59
Speaker
Uh, please let us know in a speak pipe, which, which one do you like better? Uh, do you like them both the same equally? Uh, do you like Jake's angelic, uh, voice? Do you like my shreddy pentatonic solo? Um, you know, hit us up at speak pipe.com slash PCL. Uh, and we got a speak pipe regarding this tournament bracket, um, that we're going to listen to speak pipes. And I think.
01:01:30
Speaker
We're hearing from, uh, from Chuck Stokes again. So I'm going to play this and, uh, let's see. Let's see what we got. Chuck Stokes.
01:01:40
Speaker
All right, all right. We'll have to agree to disagree on the Green Day and State Champs argument. But at this point, I respect Neck Deep. I discovered them in 2017. Peace in the Panic was one of my favorite albums that year. I think like 2018, something like that. And then Blink's Anime of the States, one of the most legendary albums of all time.
01:02:04
Speaker
The way the pool's going right now, I'm a betting man. I got Blink as heavy favorites in pool A and pool B, pool two, whatever you want to call it. I got a day to remember right at even odds to win with Blink taking it all. Blinking a day to remember all the way. Peace. That's a fair assumption. I think that's a great assumption. I think I would 100% agree. Yeah, definitely. Definitely top two.
01:02:30
Speaker
In the second round of this best pop punk band tournament bracket, we had Blink-182 going up against Offspring, Blink-182 won. Then we had the story so far going up against Newfound Glory. Story so far won that. And Neckdeep up against Good Charlotte. Neckdeep won that one. And Pool 2, we had Yellow Card against The Data Remember.
01:02:52
Speaker
a day to remember one silver scene versus knuckle puck and silver scene won that then we had movements going up against taking back sunday taking back sunday one so i knew this was going to happen at some point but we have to give we had to give somebody a bye right in both pools um
01:03:14
Speaker
So Blink-182, we had everybody vote on that. Blink-182 got the buy, and a day to remember also got a buy. I mean, that's basically it there, Chuck. Like, people voted for who gets to buy, right? But I think what's cool about this is seeing what people think about, like, I'm so stoked that the story so far in Neckdeep made it to go up against each other, you know?
01:03:42

Um, personally, dude, that's, it's just such a tough one for me. Like it was just like, like what, what Chuck was talking about on the last one, like putting blink and green day together. I mean, for people that would be other people, that'd be difficult. Right. Cause it's kind of the same as Nick deep and stories so far together.
01:04:06
Speaker
Yeah, I would agree with that. But I also think that that's cooler that they're finally going against each other in this bracket. You know what I mean? Speaking of that, dude, I really wish that they would do a tour together. I wonder why that's never happened.
01:04:26
Speaker
Oh, so funny, funny thing. You mentioned that. Um, I was looking on Instagram today and neck deep posted a, uh, they're doing like a 10 year anniversary tour for, uh, rain in July. Sick. That took, that is the, that is their best, uh, project. Okay. Maybe not their best project, but definitely my favorite one. I think it's their best one. Yeah.
01:04:55
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Anyways. Anyways. I mean, it's not really like interesting to the, to the viewers, mostly to me and you, but it's funny. I remember, no, it wasn't, it wasn't the first time we saw him, but the first time we saw him in like a, like a tour setting, not Warped Tour. Um, they were opening for real friends.
01:05:13
Speaker
And I guess another thing that was funny about that night, everyone was there for neck deep. And then once neck deep was done and real friends came on pretty much half the place left. Yeah. Now they're doing that anniversary tour with real friends, but obviously they're obviously they're headlining.
01:05:30
Speaker
Yeah. So a day to remember got the buy and pull too. So whoever wins against taking back Sunday and Silverstein will go head to head with a day to remember, which is pretty dope. I think taking back Sunday with the people that are voting on this, I think they could go to the finals. Think so?
01:06:00
Speaker
I think so, dude. I really do. Um, just based on, you know, seeing like what people have been voting on people, they always revert back to the old stuff. No matter what. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. I dig it. I dig it. Yeah, absolutely. Uh, who, who do you, you obviously take a day to remember, right?
01:06:25
Speaker
Overtaking Back Sunday? Yeah. Oh, yeah, 100%. That's a very, very tough one for me. But you were talking about Taking Back Sunday and Silverstein. Yeah, Silverstein and Taking Back Sunday. I might go with Silverstein. Really? OK. OK. Those are tough. It's tough. It's not the same, but it's kind of the same.
01:06:51
Speaker
Yeah, for a lot of people, that's like the toughest question. It's like, who is your favorite band? Who's your favorite all time band? It's like, there's so fucking many. It depends on what mood you're in, you know? Depends on the time of year. 100%. In December, Kyle loves Michael Buble.
01:07:12
Speaker
That is accurate. And Mariah Carey. OK. I think that's going to do it for today's episode. First and foremost, thanks again to Vailed Alpha for joining us in studio. We had a great time.
