Stripper Unions and Pop Punk

The PCL Podcast
Avatar
111 Plays2 years ago

This week, Kyle and Jake discuss a variety of things from their new Say I Want You visualizer that was entirely made by AI, strippers having unions, and why they didn't use twitter until just now.

The heart of the show comes from our guest, Pat, who runs an entertainment community platform that you can find just about everywhere called "Unsigned Pop Punk" where he aims to build a community that celebrates the world of Pop Punk. We talk about his MTV influences, the early stages of his page, his strategy for growing an audience. We also dive into talking about his music career and how one of his covers accidentally went viral.

Introduction to PCL Podcast

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome back to the PCL podcast today. We're talking about the new say I want you visualizer We got pat from unsigned pop punk and we just got added to a couple new playlists and Don't forget that strippers have unions. That is right Jake. We're gonna be covering all of that all on this show. Let's do it
00:00:25
Speaker
This is the PCL Podcast. My name is Kyle McGraw. I am the host of the show and this is about a rock band from Southern California. I'm your co-host, Jake Sperling. We do this podcast because we like putting out music our own way and having a good time while we do it.

The Role of Visualizers in Music

00:00:41
Speaker
Today, like I said before, we're going to be talking about the visualizer that's coming out tomorrow. It's pretty sweet. We made it from this
00:00:50
Speaker
AI thing called Kyber. It's pretty great. Lincoln Park makes some videos with them. I saw some Kid Cudi visualizers. It's a pretty sweet thing. And I think it's a great way to have like just an extra piece of content, you know? Are these just like help with like lyric videos and stuff like that? Or is it mostly just a different type of content?
00:01:17
Speaker
I think you could do whatever. If you wanted to put lyrics on it, I think some people do that, but I think it's literally just to have. Just something else.
00:01:27
Speaker
Exactly. Something else just helps. When he said it to me, I didn't even think you needed lyrics, like a lyric video for it. That's what I'm saying. Was that cool? Yeah, it's just a visualizer, like artists in general. Instead of having the backdrop, like the banner or something, there's screens behind them now and there's visualizers. Now, I don't know if this AI visualizer is
00:01:51
Speaker
good enough to replace something like that, like something where you can actually have like more control over it. But it is pretty sick. And I definitely think it's something that everybody watching this should go check out. How did you like, how did you

Spotify Playlist Additions and Rebranding

00:02:05
Speaker
start it? Like, is it kind of like chat GPT where you're like, a little video about XYZ?
00:02:13
Speaker
You know what, Jake, you're gonna have to actually wait till segment three for that one. I mean, we got some other news too. You guys will hear at our first break, we got our first real ad. I don't know if most people that listen to podcasts are stoked about ads, but we are. Hell yeah. And it's a cool ad too.
00:02:38
Speaker
It's a great ad. It helps a ton with hangovers. Uh, on top of that, Jake, we've, we, uh, I don't know if you saw, but over the weekend we got added to two new playlists on Spotify, which is pretty sick. Uh, one of them is called alternative workout and the other is called pop punk breakouts. Cool. It's pretty tight. So I just want to,
00:03:05
Speaker
Let's just bring that up if you guys want to go check out those other playlists. There's some other cool artists on there. I hadn't heard of some of them. Let's see. So So is a band that is on the pop punk breakouts playlist a lot. They're pretty cool. They got some good stuff out there. The other one, the alternative workout one.
00:03:28
Speaker
There's the Black Keys, Imagine Dragons, 21 Pilots, Cage Elephant, Kings of Leon, the Killers, the Strokes. I kind of feel like, honestly, dude, I kind of feel like, say I want you, does fit in pretty good with those, with those other songs. Yeah, maybe a little bit more. It's a little indie. I guess the older, maybe older Imagine Dragons. Yeah.
00:03:51
Speaker
Yeah, but I do think that it has a pretty similar vibe to those other bands on there. Yeah, that's cool though. Go check out those two cool playlists. We'll put those in the description. We got Jake Abramson on in a couple of weeks. The legend himself.
00:04:09
Speaker
the legend himself. And he is actually releasing a new song tomorrow as well with they sold me a sunset. That's his band name. We're going to be talking to him all about his music in a couple of weeks. Super stoked for that. And then last but not least and the piece second to last but not least second to last. You're right.

Social Media Antics and Revamp

00:04:32
Speaker
We have a Twitter now. We had a Twitter.
00:04:34
Speaker
We had a Twitter, but we revamped it. We did. We revamped it. We actually got our handle that we wanted. I think that was the reason why we didn't use it before. I think the handle we had to use was CA underscore PCL, right? That literally just pissed me off. I was like, fuck this. We're just going to use Twitter as a fuck around site. And that's pretty much what we did.
00:05:02
Speaker
That is what we did. I remember we were sitting at the bar. You started to talk about this when we were talking to Pat. It was right before we were about to play. I think we might've just done sound check. It was in Houston. I remember this, that this happened. And we were just, you know, we're on our social media doing what you got to do as a band. And they sat down like right next to us and they were just like, what are you guys watching? We're like, oh no, we're, this is business. We're reposting porn.
00:05:32
Speaker
I think it was just me and you. We were just drinking beer, watching porn on Twitter. Yeah, just some nice lesbian porn. I don't remember what it was, but... I do. I wish I could find that video again, honestly. And on the other news of porn... Oh, is that a segue? This is a segue into the most important topic of the night.
00:05:56
Speaker
Yes. Okay. So you wanted to talk to me about this. You sent me a link. Yeah. I was actually at the gym and this popped up on the TV and I was just dying laughing. Okay. Hit me with it. What's, what's going on? Okay. You want the title of the article?

Stripper Unions and Club Dynamics

00:06:12
Speaker
We gotta, we gotta really give them the play by play.
00:06:15
Speaker
Okay. The play by play is summarized in one sentence is that the strippers are unionized now. Not all of them. Just one specific strip club in North Hollywood. It's called the star gardens. It's a shithole. They have a union. They have a union now from the looks of it. It's for, it's for the C team, right? Yeah. That's, I mean, like the eight teamers don't really need a union, right? Like they're going to stay busy.
00:06:38
Speaker
Yeah, I think these girls wouldn't be hired at like the Screaming Rhino or anything like that, but don't hold me to it. I've never actually been in there. Okay. But when you look at it from the outside, it's probably no bueno.
00:06:49
Speaker
To me, more than anything, why I was like stoked to talk about this was just like the, like visualizing it. If they had a, like a job fair for strip clubs, right? They just like set up a tent, like a bunch of tents, kind of like the beer tasting. And I found, uh, Nana to do the artwork, right? So there's just a bunch of canopies and tents with like the different. Strip clubs and they're there trying to get.
00:07:13
Speaker
strippers to come work at their facility, but they'd be like, okay, if you work here, we're not going to give you the $5 buffet slot with the college that's directly next to you where you know you're going to be getting just a bunch of people coming in to pay for the $5 buffet and not pay for any lap dances. Because we know that that's what happens with the $5 buffet.
00:07:37
Speaker
It's a very specific story. Oh, I mean, I don't have too much experience. But I will say that I've heard that there's a, that there's great food at the $5 buffets at strip clubs. I can only imagine. They'd be pretty cool. You know, 10 AM walking in there for just for the buffet. Yeah, we didn't do that. We never done that. So Kyle, if you were the owner of a strip club, what would you call it?
00:08:04
Speaker
Uh, it would be, it would definitely be called, uh, Ed Sheeran's a team only. So you, you'd go for just the best of the best, obviously.
00:08:17
Speaker
If I had a strip club, did you ever watch Parks and Rec? A little bit, not much. But you know who Ron Swanson is, right? Oh, I was thinking, for some reason, I was thinking trailer park boys. Those are like two different strip clubs right there, Parks and Rec and trailer park boys. But anyways, so in the show, Ron Swanson, he owns, at the end of the series, he owns a construction company. He called it
00:08:45
Speaker
good building and development or just something really stupid like that. That's what my name would be. If I had a name would be, it would just be like quality strippers and beer. I love that.
00:09:01
Speaker
Cause you know, that's exactly what you're getting. Get into this article with me, hit me, hit me with some of the, some of the, okay. This is just the ABC article. I just click some random one, but I mean, all in all, they wanted to unionize for a good reason, basically for better wages and more security, I guess. Right. Right. They wanted to be treated better because I guess management wasn't treating them well.
00:09:24
Speaker
Oh, I'm all for that. Yeah, of course. With like a union though, you don't get tips for a union. I know people like in the studios, they're not getting tips. Right. It just kind of blows my mind that like strippers have a union. I'm in the podcast industry. There's no unions for podcast producers or podcasters. Yet. I feel like that's coming though, because I know with the whole writer's guild thing in that union,
00:09:52
Speaker
everything's kind of going crazy, so I feel like there's just going to be a union for everything. But all in all, this whole thing, it's a good thing, but I feel like this is going to take away the strippers making a lot of money kind of thing. You think it's going to hurt them in the long run? I feel like it because do strippers have hourly wages to begin with?
00:10:14
Speaker
I have no clue. Are they just basically going off the tips? I want to, I want to know like what the, what, what's like, what's a top strip? I want to know what, like what best spearmint rhino on the planet thinks about unionized. Cause those girls are probably making hundreds of thousand dollars a year. So maybe the, maybe the club owners would be all for it. No. So in the article, the club owners are not, they're not for it.
00:10:45
Speaker
Okay, I mean it just it really just says that the the club owners like kind of push back on it They're firing the dancers at the beginning of all this because they were speaking out about this Star Garden decided to settle as it has always been a fair and equal opportunity employer and
00:11:02
Speaker
that respects the rights of its employees as part of the settlement. Star Gardens withdraws its election challenges and a ballot count will move forward. So basically they go to this union, which is represented by people in theater and they vote to become a union.
00:11:20
Speaker
Well, I heard that Cheryl just got laid off from the spearmint. Ryan is putting feelers out to the other clubs. Well, condolences to Cheryl. We can start to go fund me or something. Do you know any, any places that have any spots open star garden? I know they're unionized. They're unionized. Yeah. She can get good wages and she'll be protected.
00:11:37
Speaker
from the hooligans that come in. I thought I heard something about a dancer, a deja vu being pregnant. So maybe there's a spot open there. Hey people, people like that kind of thing. That's true. Not me, but you're basically getting two dances for the price of one. Yeah, but you have to register as a sex offender as you leave.
00:11:55
Speaker
And on that note, let's, yeah, let's, we're going to stop talking about this, but if we hear any more updates on the unionized strippers, we will definitely let you guys know. And on that note, we're going to take a quick break. And when we come back, we're going to have Pat from unsigned pop punk.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. We're super stoked to have you here. So Pat runs an entertainment community platform and it goes by the name of Unsigned PopPunk. You can find them on Instagram and they have a website. They're doing a bunch of stuff, Twitch streams and everything. But how about I just let you talk about it for a sec? You want to just give us a background? Yeah. Like we used to just kind of try and explain to people that we were like a
00:14:26
Speaker
you know, promotional community, you know, dedicated to building the music scene up. But now, you know, we've grown a lot. And so now we kind of dabble more in the entertainment, you know, kind of like trying to bring back a lot of what MTV was doing. Right. You know, with showing music videos and, you know, shit like that. We have a show called Top 10 Countdown, which is kind of like our
00:14:53
Speaker
version of TRL, you know, everybody can vote, except it's not, you know, unlike TRL, we play the entire video. Um, and everything is voted on by people. So fans go and vote. We don't pick the top 10. Like it's, everyone votes and whoever has the most votes gets top 10. That's awesome. So yeah, I mean, basically I started this a few years ago. I was doing music for a really long time.
00:15:23
Speaker
like 15 years, 15, 20 years. And it's just like music is one of the most difficult paths you can take. I mean, the same as being like an actor or anything in the entertainment kind of biz, you got a one in a million shot. And with any type of entertainment, it's hard to get anybody to give a fuck about you.
00:15:52
Speaker
You know, it's like it's it's really hard for to get anybody to care. That goes with like your your friends and family, too. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, exactly. It's hard. It's hard. And they they support, you know, it's not really the right audience most of the time. You know what I mean? They're just like listening because they care about us. It's not because they like the music or like what we're doing. They just like us. I guess it's a better way to put it. Yeah. And that's the thing is it's difficult to get anybody
00:16:20
Speaker
to come out to a show, including friends and family. So I wanted to start a community showing that there are people that give a shit. I'm one of them. So I started there. I started as just a playlist. And we still do the playlist. That's one of our main things.
00:16:43
Speaker
Since then, we just continue trying to do more things. Everything we do for bands is completely free. I love that, man. I think it's great. I saw your page not too long ago, actually. And I was just like, this is awesome. Thank you. What is the reason why you chose pop punk in particular? Well, I mean, I've been doing pop punk forever. I mean, that's kind of been my thing. I really got into pop punk.
00:17:13
Speaker
you know, in the 90s. For sure. You know, start like honestly starting with with Green Day. Green Day was the big one, a big one for me. Green Day, the offspring. And, you know, like being being part of the older generation, like my, you know, I have a lot more like kind of pop or like punk rock era roots, like hopeless records, original hopeless words, face to face that sentence, you know, no effects.
00:17:43
Speaker
things like that, that's where I really got into it. And then for the like the pop punk aspect, when Blink 182 came out with Dude Ranch is like really what set me on the path of discovering this whole like genre of music. Based on that, that information that you're giving me right now, a couple, a couple of things come to mind. Do you like Green Day or Blink 182 better? They both, um,
00:18:12
Speaker
scratch an itch, you know, it all depends because, you know, I, I would say that they're, they're both top tier bands for me, uh, in, uh, of, of pop punk. They're two of my favorites. Um, obviously green day is a more serious band. Blink way to is a lot more goofball ish, you know, if I'm looking to like,
00:18:36
Speaker
just think of having fun and nostalgia and stuff like that. And, you know, it's a nice fucking summer day. It's all sunny. I'm going to put on Blink 182. But, you know, sometimes if I'm like, you know, feel a little doom and gloomy, that's a little more green day. You know, if I'm in a more serious mood, that's more green. It all depends. That's what's cool about about music is.
00:18:58
Speaker
You pick it based on your emotions.

Social Media Strategies for Bands

00:19:00
Speaker
I love listening to music that really gives you the chills, you know what I mean? I'm always trying to get that rush again, you know? And sometimes I'll try to force it with a little movements or something like that, you know what I mean?
00:19:17
Speaker
Like if you're like really trying to like get in the fields whether you know when we're songwriting or something something that put you in that headspace I think the psychology behind music in that regard is also pretty crazy. Yeah. Absolutely. I guess the reason why we're asking we just did a we just did a whole like bracket competition thing on our Instagram basically ranking like.
00:19:41
Speaker
putting like all the pop punk bands that we like, whether it's like blank or green day or story so far neck deep in a, in like a bracket and just see what everybody kind of picked. And I, we're at the finals right now, right? Yeah. I wrote the finals. It's blank in a day to remember is what it came down to. Um, obviously, I mean, you could kind of.
00:19:59
Speaker
You kind of predict where where it's going to go, you know, based on. Oh, sure. How massive the bands were and how small the other bands were. Right. It's tough to like hold brackets and stuff like that, you know, because I mean, unless there are like a legit comparable band, you know, like Blink 182 Green Day, you know, Follow Boy, My Chemical Romance, like like bands that are the exact same tier if you put like
00:20:28
Speaker
you know, neck deep in Green Day. Well, Green Day is going to win and that's going to go away. I think that's exactly what happened too. Yeah, I think so too. I think what I was getting at with that was we put that bracket together just to like get some like engagement, you know? Sure.
00:20:45
Speaker
with our small but appreciated following. Yeah, your audience. Yeah, exactly. I was going to segue into talking about what you feel is most important for smaller bands in regards to social media and engagement with their audience and reaching their target audience. Kind of from what I've seen is just find what other people are doing and do your own version of it.
00:21:16
Speaker
You have to do TikTok. I'm sorry. If you don't want to, that sucks. You gotta. It's the future right now. It's where everybody is. But it's tough because every social media has its place. It's important to be a part of every social media if you're able to. Obviously, if you're in a band,
00:21:46
Speaker
you know, getting each member to take over like some sort of social media is usually what, you know, what I'd recommend is what I did in, in my bands and stuff like that. You know, it'd be like one person takes Instagram, one person will handle Facebook, you know, and they, if you spread it out, you can all post the same shit, but just having each person, you know, be responsible for something, you know, then you can all work as a team.
00:22:15
Speaker
And as a collective, you're going to accomplish a lot more. You know, find finding what each person's strengths are and using those. Right. Like if you got a good shit poster, that's what Twitter's for, man. Twitter's for saying weird shit. That's what Twitter is. Do you want to hear? Do you want to hear our our previous strategy with Twitter that did not work out so well? Sure.
00:22:41
Speaker
Don't go too weird, though. Actually, it's really weird. It's not that weird. Well, it's kind of like the, like, you know, on TikTok. The way you just said that, you're like, oh, it gets really weird. It's weird. Prepare yourself, Pat. Actually, it's funny. This is going to blow your mind. You know, like on TikTok or Instagram, when you're looking at reels and you like really watch something of like a certain subject, that's pretty much everything that pops up. Yeah.
00:23:08
Speaker
That's kind of what we were doing on our Twitter. We may or may not have been drinking a little bit, but we're at some restaurant or bar in Houston. What were you looking up? What we were doing is we were just retweeting porn.
00:23:28
Speaker
Like that's all we would retweet. And that's all we followed was just porn stuff, but we'd still like, obviously post about the band. And, you know, we get texts from our friends like, I'm sitting in class right now and I just opened up Twitter and I saw your retweet, like it was going off. So yeah, we might, we might revive our Twitter and then, you know, just kinda. I'd revive your Twitter, probably not do that.
00:23:57
Speaker
just saying like the thing is those like with Twitter you know I obviously say like you say word shit but I mean if you go to our Twitter that's not really what we do but it's a whole different audience on each platform you know you got the you got dedicated Twitter people you know that there's it like Twitter
00:24:18
Speaker
is where you could just say random shit though. You could be like, I'm watching this movie and it's pretty fucking cool. You can't post that on Instagram. That's ridiculous. Yeah. No, definitely we're not going to let a lot of likes. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. But on Twitter, if you say something like that, you never know. You might start a conversation. Somebody might actually just start talking and then
00:24:44
Speaker
you just keep messaging back and that builds it and that builds rapport with people. Maximizing your reach and finding different groups of people like Facebook would be my parents' friends. Yeah, older people. But it's important for them to see it too. Well, lots of people use Facebook still. There's lots of Facebook groups and stuff that can be valuable resources.
00:25:12
Speaker
for sure, like post in and things like that. So, I mean, but I wouldn't put all your eggs into Facebook, but it's still a valuable tool to have. I mean, I would say social media wise, you know, Instagram and TikTok are where the biggest. Yeah, I'm even hearing from like bands and stuff that Instagram is kind of a thing of the past at the moment, but Instagram is
00:25:41
Speaker
Instagram is our most, um, popular social media. It's where we get the most engagement. Um, it's where I see most people still using. Um, so here's, okay. So here's what I kind of talked to everybody about realistically. So you guys use tick tock regularly. Yeah. So when you're scrolling and stuff, have you ever once in your entire time?
00:26:05
Speaker
looked at who you're following. Have you ever gone to your following page and just looked at those videos? Or do you just stood on your for you page? Yeah, it's pretty much your for you page. Okay, so that is also every single person on that social media platform. Everybody. So to where we have like, we don't even have a ton. I mean, we've got like 6500 followers on TikTok. However, none of them will go
00:26:36
Speaker
and see us unless we pop up on there for you, Pidge. The TikTok is incredible for finding new people. That's your goal. TikTok is constant new people. But your goal with TikTok is to get people to leave TikTok and go to your other things, go to your Spotify, go follow you on Instagram, because Instagram is all followers. So like if you have
00:27:04
Speaker
Like if you have 3000 followers on Instagram, okay, all 3000 of those people will see your post, but that's not the same with TikTok. TikTok is solely about finding new people. Let's end on that note and let's take a really quick break and we'll be right back with Pat.
00:27:26
Speaker
So I just want to throw a quick shout out to Zencaster. Zencaster is the platform that Jake and I record these podcasts on. And we also distribute these podcasts via Zencaster. Zencaster has kind of been our all in one solution. And another cool thing about Zencaster is they have a monetization feature built in the software that can help even the smallest podcasts grow and make a little bit of money doing it.
00:27:56
Speaker
We don't have a promo code, but we love using Zencaster. And we encourage you guys to give it a shot as well if you're interested in doing a podcast. All right. Well, let's get back to the podcast. Go check out Zencaster. Welcome back, everybody. We're here with Pat from Unsigned Pop Punk. So you mentioned earlier that that you were a musician. You've been a musician for a while. Do you still play music? I still have like. So I have one band that I play with every once in a while called Clothesline.
00:28:26
Speaker
It's like skate punk type stuff. I still have a band that that we we haven't we've never announced that we weren't playing anymore. But I mean, we're not really doing it. We're not really doing anything anymore. But that's that band was called City's Never Sleep. What do you do in the bands? I sing and I play guitar. Cool. So I.

Pat's Musical Journey and Songwriting

00:28:51
Speaker
I usually will I dual vocals in both of those bands.
00:28:56
Speaker
And then the band that I did the most with was a band called Jamestown Story. I was in that for the early 2000s. You want to listen to any of your stuff right now with us? Sure. Yeah. Sure. Whatever you want. Let's go City's Never Sleep. All right. Our top song will probably be Mr. Meeseeks.
00:29:48
Speaker
Mr. Meeseeks, a little Rick and Morty reference here.
00:29:56
Speaker
this is great it's uh it's it's silly it was awesome it wasn't supposed to you know creep up towards a million plays but that's crazy like that stuff happens like that you know like you're probably like more passionate about a different project anything else anything else
00:30:20
Speaker
We did have a couple, like a pretty fun cover of Kokomo by the Beach Boys. That was a fun one. Oh yeah. Oh, nice little key change here. Yep. It's very high. It was very difficult to sink. Do you produce as well? Uh, yeah. Yeah. You want to talk about production then for a little bit? I mean, we, so for Say's Never Sleep, um,
00:30:46
Speaker
Our guitar player is also like a recording engineer. That's what he does for his job. Yeah. So luckily for us, I mean, he recorded everything we did. Yeah. Just money recordings. Yeah. So we're very lucky. So, um, yeah, I mean, we just pretty much. We would write it and then just record it like that. We would just.
00:31:13
Speaker
do it all together, you know? Yeah. Yeah. And then it would just just poof. Boom. It's done. Just poof. Just poof. Yeah. I mean, pretty much we didn't really do a ton of production to any of our recordings other than it was just what we what I wrote. Right. And we would just record it. So you wrote most of the songs or you wrote all these? So I would mostly write the songs. We would, you know, we would
00:31:42
Speaker
I would bring all the songs in with pretty much a 90% completion and then we would do some minor tweaks here and there usually. Right. In the podcast that we put out last week or for the listeners two weeks ago,
00:32:01
Speaker
We got to a part in the podcast where we're talking about songwriting with a band called Veil Alpha. You should check them out. They're alternative metal. Sure. And they're great. But yeah, we're talking about songwriting. And that was honestly my favorite part of the entire podcast. I could talk about it all day. I am weird with songwriting.
00:32:25
Speaker
I just do stuff. I don't really know. I can't read music. I can't write music. I don't really know. I taught myself how to play guitar. And so half the time, Jake, our recording engineer, I create chords because I don't know what I'm doing.
00:32:53
Speaker
You know, I'll have weird time signatures because it's just what I have in my head. It's not like I don't know any formulas. That doesn't mean anything to me. I just am doing stuff. And so there's a lot of times where like he'll be like, this shouldn't work, but it does. And it's cool. And I'm like, that's awesome. It's just how it goes for me. Yeah, that's pretty much what you think sounds good in your head. And
00:33:21
Speaker
Yeah, but also being able to translate that or being able to get it from your head to other people's ears. That's amazing. I love getting into the rhythm where you're super stoked about writing songs and having those weird glimpses of
00:33:46
Speaker
I guess magic, right? Where you're driving in the car or you're taking a shower or whatever and you get a song idea, it comes to your head and then you act on it. You know what I mean? Because I feel like so many times if you don't act on it, it's gone forever. Do you have any funny stories about that? Any crazy stories about a weird time that a song that you wrote came to your head?
00:34:15
Speaker
I mean, you could probably, I would, I would guess Mr. Meeseeks, but you're probably watching. Right? No. So rig. So Mr. Meeseeks is, is also, it's funny cause it's not our song. Um, it is a song. If I, we did a cover of, I don't remember what his name is. Royal Royish good looks, I think is his name. So he made a good looks cover. Okay. So.
00:34:44
Speaker
We did a pop punk version of that. And so his is a is a songify. So he made a song out of the show. So he took their stuff and like I'm Mr. Meeseeks. Look at me. And then he made it like into like music. Right. And and so I thought it was so funny and just loved it. And I was like, yo, I mess it. We messaged him. I was like, hey, man, do you care if we cover this? Like,
00:35:14
Speaker
Is that cool? And he's like, oh, yeah, totally do it. And so we're like, cool, we're going to make a pop version of it. And so we did like his is way, way more popular than ours is. But I get random people all the time that only know our version. And I think that's hilarious because, you know, I've been playing cities, never sleep since 2008. And like I'm just like the music guy.
00:35:41
Speaker
Yeah, it's kind of it's kind of weird like nowadays, especially on like tick tock you see bands that are like pop punk bands and they'll do like a I don't know like a pop song cover like it like a Taylor Swift cover and make it pop punk and that's what that's what gets them through a crazy big platform and it's it's it's kind of cool. Yeah, I mean we we did
00:36:03
Speaker
the the cover of Mr. Meeseeks, I think, before TikTok was even out. TikTok's been it's because you're playing in the head, man. You're playing in the head. Yeah. I've always I've always liked covering songs, man. That's always been my thing. I think a good I think a good remake because that's what I think of them as is like a remaking of the song. I really don't like when a band just
00:36:32
Speaker
covers you know it's like you're just like that like you played exactly the same okay you're just a cover band i don't like that yeah like change it up like it's gotta be something better right yeah or just your version like this is how you would do it right and uh i've always liked a good pop punk like remake and
00:36:52
Speaker
I mean, I've been doing it for a long fricking time. Like it's just like one of my favorite things to do is I think it's so fun. I've, I've been making like doing pop pump covers since like, I don't know, like 2001. Yeah. So that's crazy. I've, I've always thought it was fun. You know, it is fun. Um, did any creative stories come to mind about like songwriting?
00:37:21
Speaker
Not anything crazy, but I wrote... So one of the ways I write is I just pick up my guitar and I just start playing stuff. So with our clothesline album, I wrote most of that in one afternoon, just sitting there and I would just
00:37:51
Speaker
I just grabbed my guitar and I just started playing. And so I just started recording and I would record on, I record all of our demos. It's just on my phone. And then I sent it over to like my buddy and I was like, Hey, what do you think of this? What do you think of these days? Like, that's great. And so you would send me like lyrics and stuff back. And we pretty much wrote most of that EP in one, one shot. Do you have anything, anything coming up? Not really. We just played a show with keep flying.
00:38:21
Speaker
last month. That was fun. Cool. Where we're at. I mean, if you don't mind, we'll be asking where you're from. So we're from Minnesota. Okay. And we played at Dayblock Brewing in Minneapolis. Cool. Cool. Yeah, that'd be that'd be great. Jake, we got to get we got to get some shows at some brewing companies.
00:38:44
Speaker
Yes. Absolutely. Yeah. Anywhere. Let's fucking go. Yeah, literally anywhere. Let's go play. Before we wrap this up, do you have any any bands that you've been listening to recently that you want to shout out? I mean, like, honestly, goalkeeper is one of the I think just one of the great new bands doing stuff right now. Cliff Diver. Super great. Glimmers is awesome. Kostin just released a new song today and it's
00:39:13
Speaker
straight banger. Keep flying. They're super good. If you like if you like some Scott Punk stuff, man, they're freaking great. Yeah. It's it's tough. There's so much good music right now and so many like good like friends that we've made doing this. It's I could go on for a long freaking time.

Unsigned Pop Punk Platform Promotion

00:39:41
Speaker
just naming people. And that's exactly why you're doing what you're doing, right? Yeah. Trying to get everybody out there. Well, we love what you're doing. And we're going to continue to follow along with your guys' stuff. You want to quickly just plug everything that you got? Absolutely.
00:40:02
Speaker
I love plugging. Let's, let's plug some. Plugarama is what I've heard. Plugarama. Yeah. Uh, I mean, we're on sign pop punk. You can Google on sign pop punk and you'll find everything. Um, so we're on every social media. I mean, we're on, I think hive. I think that they made a hive. That was the thing at one point and it was very short lasting. Is that like the hub for Bumble?
00:40:31
Speaker
What the hub for Bumble? Oh, no, no. It let me look here. Hold on. Let me see if I still have it. I might have deleted it just because like it just stopped working. I think it's I think it was called Hive though. Yeah, I don't. Oh, there it is. Yeah, it was called Hive. I haven't used it in a very long time because nobody like it was like
00:41:00
Speaker
People, it was really popular for a little bit. People were like super stoked on it and then it just like went down and I don't think it ever came back up. Shoot, yeah, there's so many of them. Yeah, I don't know, y'all. We're on YouTube, sub us on YouTube. We're on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, Discord, and you can find a TikTok, you can find all of our playlists we have on Spotify. We've got a whole bunch of them.
00:41:29
Speaker
Yeah, anything you want. Read it. You can find us on Reddit. Nice. I'll do that. I'll do that right now. We do. We we're kind of we're all over the place. Awesome. Yeah. Or just easy. 00:41:59
Speaker
Yeah, I'll just hang out with us. That's all I want. Hey, Pat, thank you for coming on. This has been fun. No problem. Thanks for having me. You guys are doing great things with Unsigned Pop Punk. We got a PCL bar coming up. We'll see you on the other side of this ad break. Welcome back to the PCL bar. Today we're making peach cobblers. Woo! First thing you're going to do is purchase one of my glasses. My glasses?
00:42:26
Speaker
This is a great drink for a hot summer evening. First ingredient, one ounce of peach vodka. I'm a little worried about this. Next ingredient, one ounce of frangelico. One ounce of heavy whipping cream. Shake. Glass with peach slice. Dip it in a graham cracker and brown sugar concoction. And ice.
00:42:52
Speaker
garnish with a peach slice. That's special effects. Oh God. So I kind of fucking put way too much cinnamon in this bitch. That's how you make a peach cobbler. Welcome back everybody. Jake, what did you think of that peach cobbler? Never had peach cobbler before, but it tastes fantastic.
00:43:13
Speaker
Hell yeah, that's what I'm fucking talking about. That's definitely one of my favorite drinks that we made on the PCL bar recently. I love the special effects. All about the fucking cinnamon. And nope, I'm not just naming stripper names, everybody. Not just naming stripper names. Anyways, okay, so Jake.
00:43:31
Speaker
Tell you about the visualizer. You want me to tell you how I did it and how I made it. Yes, I do. Okay. So basically what I did was I, uh, I signed up for like a monthly thing for this, uh, visualizer AI thing called Kyber.
00:43:48
Speaker
Mike Demanskis sent it to me. He's gonna be a future guest on the PCL podcast and it is fucking sick. Lincoln Park uses it, Kid Cudi uses it. Basically, you know, the visualizer, it's just like a cool little extra thing to throw in to your releases. So if you're a band out there that is struggling to produce a ton of content,
00:44:17
Speaker
This is a very simple thing that you can do. And then, you know, just delete the account after the trial period's over. Anyways, you upload a picture to this thing and then you upload an audio.
00:44:35
Speaker
Source it will interpret what that picture looks like and it will give you like a sample prompt You change it tweak it do what you got to do and then you pick the style. I like the cinematic style That's what we use for The say I want you visualizer. We're gonna Jake and I are gonna sit back and watch this with you guys All right, three two one
00:45:28
Speaker
It's crazy how fast this thing works. Well, like how fast it, it makes it. Yeah. Yeah. I love like how quickly it evolves too, you know? It's like, cause it's really not the same thing the whole time.
00:46:02
Speaker
I like when you can like when you could see what like the next thing is gonna be or you could see kind of like what it's what it's like turning me into yeah I Never would like predict Most of this shit though, you know, no, I mean you could it like just like three to five seconds later It's something completely different. Yeah
00:46:28
Speaker
all like within the same sort of like vibe, which is great because it means that we can use it, you know? I love the reflection. It's crazy. The what? The AI stuff is crazy. I know. It blows my mind. I love the, um, I love seeing like the, the galaxies and like the reflection of the helmets. Mm-hmm.
00:46:58
Speaker
One thing I kind of don't like about this is that like we started with alien subjects, right? And then it starts, I feel like it starts turning into like astronauts. You know what I mean? Yeah. It's like it just went from like aliens to aliens and astronaut clothing. Right. To astronauts.
00:47:27
Speaker
Right. Exactly. It's cool though. Yeah. I love it. That's what I'm saying. Like we could literally use this for a visualizer behind us while we play. I think it'd be entertaining. I think it'd be really dope. I think it'd be really dope if it moved with the music a little bit better. Yeah.
00:47:54
Speaker
It just feels a little like just kind of recognize the the hits. Yeah, like the waveform or something. And maybe it does. Maybe it does do that. And because when I when I did this, I just had to put the length of the song. Yeah, it just doesn't really emphasize anything like. Like it's seems like it's all in like the same time, it's just not really.
00:48:22
Speaker
emphasizing the main parts, if that makes sense. Uh, you mean like the main parts of, of the song? Just like, like, like important hits. Oh, right. Well, yeah. Cause like the song ends and it's still just kind of going along. Yeah. It's cool though. So weird. It's a trip. I, uh, a lot of people think that, you know, literally just a couple months that stuff like this will be, uh,
00:48:50
Speaker
Like, we'll just be, like, substantially better. Like, you could actually do, like, full, like, produced music videos just with AI. Yeah. It's insane. I mean, even with, like, transcription services and stuff, you know? Like, they're getting, they're already getting so much better. Anyways, okay.
00:49:15
Speaker
I think that's going to do it for today's show. What do you think, Jake? You done? You got anything else you want to talk about? No, nothing more. Time to go to sleep.
