Interview Interruptions & Humor
00:00:23
Speaker
My name is Kyle McGraw and I'm going to be interviewing Jake. Whoa, what the?
00:00:28
Speaker
What's going on, guys? Dude, JD, we're right in the middle of a podcast. What? What do you mean? We're supposed to leave for the softball game now. All right, dude, hold on one second. We literally- Yeah, I'm fucking always. Why? Give us 10 minutes. Just fuck off. All right, I'm going to be back. You fuck you, and I'm going to be back in 10 minutes. Figure it out. All right.
Meet Jake Sperlin: Music & Softball
00:00:43
Speaker
My name is Kyle McGraw. I'm going to be interviewing Jake Sperlin, our vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Jake, we got to get through this one pretty quick because we are going to be late for this softball game. Let's get into it. PCL MicroPod, episode one.
00:00:57
Speaker
Coming at you. Jake, how are you today? I'm good, Kyle. How are you?
A Cocktail Recipe: The Scooby Snack
00:01:02
Speaker
Doing all right. So that was a pretty fucking good Scooby snack that you made earlier. Well, thanks. That's kind of my specialty. It's definitely a drink for the ladies, but I could have sworn I saw you drinking like 10 of them. Yeah, definitely. That's probably my favorite drink. It's actually a good one for big parties. Yeah. So you don't have to order either like a tequila shooter or vodka shooter or something stupid like that. You can just say,
00:01:26
Speaker
We all want Scooby Snacks. What is in a Scooby Snack? Okay, so Scooby Snack is Malibu Rum. Has to be the coconut flavor, or it doesn't work. Midori Sour, which gives it the green color. Right, right. Pineapple Juice.
00:01:43
Speaker
The recipe for the Scooby Snack is on our Instagram reels right now, so go check that out after you listen to this. Jake, how do you feel about the website? Oh, I love it. I think that we have a lot of content about us individually, like the bios. We talk about people that
00:02:03
Speaker
have helped us from past few years. Yeah. Okay, well, today, Jake, I wanted to talk to you about a few things that people listening to this might be interested in to get to know you a little bit better.
Desert Island Picks: Jake's Essentials
00:02:14
Speaker
Sounds good. First off, if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring and why? I think first of all, most importantly, would be a radio speaker of some sort plays music. I think that would
00:02:29
Speaker
I think that would be a radio radio speaker. I don't know. But don't you think don't you think like a plane has a radio built into it playing? Yeah. Well, I mean, music is the most important thing. I don't care about the plane. All right. Okay. Second. What else would you bring? Beer. Yeah. Gotta have the beer. It's gotta be cold. So now also like a private jet, you don't think that those have music and alcohol on board? I got it. Okay. So all right. We got a radio. We got beer. What's the third thing?
00:03:00
Speaker
Pocket pussy. Because I was going to say that, you know, a jet probably would have all three of those things. So you're saying a jet would be a good idea for the third option? I guess I can do that. I prefer a boat. Okay.
Musical Inspirations & Tattoos
00:03:16
Speaker
If you could only listen to one band for the rest of your life, who would it be? This is a tough question. Yeah, I know, but you got to pick one. People who do know me.
00:03:24
Speaker
I'd say any band that's tattooed on me. I'm looking at Poison, Angels and Airwaves, Motley Crue, A Day to Remember. Can you sing any of those songs right now for us? I can't. I didn't do my warm-ups. That shot we just had has
00:03:40
Speaker
has dairy in it. And as you know, from the experienced singers we are, that actually messes up your voice. And I just can't do that right now. You were just talking about warming up and warming up your voice. We played baseball together in high school, a little bit in college. Now we play on a beer league, softball team. We've also known each other for quite a while. We have known each other for a long time.
00:04:03
Speaker
and you also don't show up to the beer league softball games. Yeah, but I'm still hitting 750 by the way. Yeah. I mean, when you show up to one game and go three for four, I know we can bring in my steps from all the other leagues I've
Superstitions & Rituals in Music and Sports
00:04:14
Speaker
been in. What I was getting at was I've always been pretty superstitious. I was wondering if you had any like pregame rituals or things like that, that transitioned into like performing live rituals or superstitions or
00:04:29
Speaker
You know, something like, gotta wear the same sliders or boxers as the last time. So it's a baseball knock from... Well, both. Like, did any of them transfer over? No, I don't think the more superstitious with playing live, I just think.
00:04:44
Speaker
Maybe have a few beers before kind of loosen the nerves. Right, right. So like don't step on the line before game day. Don't drink 30 beers during soundcheck. We could. You just got to spread the beers out throughout the day. Because usually whenever we play, we practice in the morning around 10 o'clock. And that's kind of when you kind of start. Yeah. So if you just spread them out between that time, by showtime, you're looking pretty good. Very lubricated. Very lubricated, very confident too. Yeah, absolutely. Definitely need that.
00:05:14
Speaker
But for baseball, I had this thing where I actually still do it. I always put my left sock on first and my right sock and then my left shoe and then my right shoe. And if I don't, I feel pretty awkward. Are you serious? And I take my shoes off and my socks into it all over again. What about like shaving or getting a haircut? If you're on a hit streak and you can't shave. As you can see, I got a fucking full on beard going right now. You can't mess with...
00:05:42
Speaker
The hit streak and stuff like that. I know. That's just, yeah, that's a cardinal sin.
Memorable Performances & Venues
00:05:46
Speaker
Moving on, do you have one particular show that we've played that sticks out to you, like more than the others? There's actually two in mind. Yeah, OK. I'd say number one would be the last show we did, where we pretty much performed most of the songs that are going to be on our new album coming up. Nobody's ever heard them before. No one's ever heard them before unless you went to the show, but they are new and improved. So I think that's one.
00:06:10
Speaker
that sticks out the most, but the show we played in Mesa, Arizona, that was Underground. We went and like upstairs, like we walked in and upstairs, like there's this big huge theater. We were driving to the show before, I would always look up like what the venues looked like and I'd look up the images and the first picture that came up was
00:06:31
Speaker
Blink-182 Live 1997 at the Mesa Theater and I'm like, oh crap. But we get there and they're like, no, no, no, you're playing downstairs. It's called The Underground, so which that makes sense. But and I'm like, oh, this is this is kind of weird, but it was tight because we weren't playing first. But since we were second, everyone kind of got into it.
00:06:49
Speaker
I remember that, I remember that show. We're doing sound check in front of the entire crowd. I was working on some like Inve Malmsteen lick and I absolutely just... Yeah, I definitely was too. So the first show that you're talking about when we were at the canyon, which has terrible sound, by the way. Terrible sound. And during the sound check, we wanted to like walk out to like the first
00:07:13
Speaker
That's gonna be on our album. Let's not say too much about that right now, but it's like really big powerful synth instrumental with like swells and transitions and it just like leads into the Opening song and then it worked fine in soundcheck
00:07:31
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know the problem. Then we get to play, and everything goes to shit. But I think we kicked ass at that performance, and everybody that saw us said it was the best show that they've seen us play. Yes. One of the best, I think. I think we bring the energy every time. Also, our first show was fun, because I worked at that venue, and the next day that I worked, the owner came in, came up and shook my hand, and he was like, oh, that was...
00:07:55
Speaker
That was pretty cool. Mostly just because we brought in a lot of people. Before the doors even opened, I think the bar, just the one bar outside made like $2,000 while I was out the door of the mall. That was cool.
Concert Tales & Mosh Pit Anecdotes
00:08:06
Speaker
Speaking of live shows, do you have any concerts coming up that you're looking forward to? Yes, actually in November. We are going to see Angels and Airwaves. That is right. The last time I went to a concert was actually Angels and Airwaves. I do want to say that it is fucking kind of bullshit though that they're
00:08:23
Speaker
aren't any more mosh pits at those concerts. Somebody literally shushed us. I was talking about the song, maybe to you. Yeah, somebody turned around and was like, can you be quiet? We're trying to watch a show here. I'm like, motherfucker, we're not at a movie theater. We're not at a fucking movie theater. Go watch this shit on YouTube or something. We're not seeing Neil Diamond. Yeah.
00:08:48
Speaker
I love going to see them, mostly because... It's just atmospheric. Yeah, it makes you feel like you're flying through space. Right. Hey, speaking of that, do you believe in aliens? Yeah, I mean, I think you're kind of dumb if you don't believe that there is something out there. Right, you must be like a flat earther if you...
00:09:05
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. If you don't believe that there's life out there. For how big the universe is and you don't think, you think that we're the only thing out there? Right. I mean, it's not, it's not a bowl. It's not a bowl. Um, what do you think they, what do you think they look like? I think they're green. Green? Yeah. I think you're crazy. I think they're gray.
Alien Beliefs: Green or Gray?
00:09:22
Speaker
Fucking listen, I don't know what animals look like. I've never seen one, but I know that they're out there. Hey, Molly! Molly! What the fuck? Shut up! What are you talking about? I don't know fucking who.
00:09:33
Speaker
Molly! Are you guys here today? I don't think they're coming for that. Hey, get the fuck back over here. Oh, god damn it. I gotta go get her. Hold on. Molly! Don't go on the fucking line! No! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Kyle! Jake! Wait, where the fuck did you guys go?
00:10:03
Speaker
The best game I had in the league ever. Hello? You guys? You gotta go.
