00:00:45
Kendahl
hi It almost sounded like you forgot it for a second.
00:00:48
Julian Contreras Jr
no no, no. I got it. I just want to get it right at beginning.
00:00:50
Kendahl
Okay.
00:00:51
Julian Contreras Jr
As you all know, this is Shut Off, Turn On. I'm one of your hosts, Julian. And as always, that guy over there is...
00:00:58
Kendahl
This is Kendall, and I'm going to say this is ah pretty consistent with us being both on on the regular lately.
00:01:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:01:06
Kendahl
We haven't had any single episodes or Invasion of the Brother-Sister moments.
00:01:06
Julian Contreras Jr
It's...
00:01:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Not yet. They're all busy and you haven't hit vacation season yet.
00:01:15
Kendahl
That's true.
00:01:16
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah So, foreshadowing it just a little bit, but...
00:01:20
Kendahl
We foreshadow just a little bit, not to spoil anything. Yeah.
00:01:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. But they've been all been here since last year, so they know what's going down. Yeah.
00:01:30
Kendahl
yeah Okay, I'm going to put a big spoiler on today's episode. the movies that we're going to talk about today, because we are going to talk about some movies, I'm going to spoil the crap out of them. So if you don't want to hear any spoiler alerts, now to preface, we just talked about this. Most of our movies are 20 plus years old.
00:01:48
Kendahl
So if you haven't watched them,
00:01:49
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:01:51
Kendahl
Not my fault at this point that I'm going to spoil it for you. But if you've waited to watch them because of whatever reason, just know if you hear a name and a title and you're just like, oh, well, you're going to get spoiled. I'm sorry.
00:02:05
Julian Contreras Jr
How about this? How about in the introduction to the episode, I will put in the list of movies that we talk about and put in there a little post that says, going to spoil them.
00:02:19
Kendahl
but Okay, you you do that. Because yes, this is going this is going straight into spoil-ish and not spoil-free.
00:02:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah,
00:02:27
Kendahl
Because I... and There's no reason to not have the spoiler element of this. that was the reason Because that's the whole point of our show on this this this wonderful topic.
00:02:35
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah yep, of course, but before we get into that I want to do a little catch-up wrap-up section.
00:02:37
Kendahl
So...
00:02:43
Julian Contreras Jr
I know there's no ah football or sports going on well, there's spring training baseball, but Yeah, it doesn't really matter but
00:02:48
Kendahl
There is.

Kendall's Health Journey

00:02:52
Julian Contreras Jr
How have you been doing over there?
00:02:54
Kendahl
ah You know, i'm I'm doing pretty good. Okay, so a while back we had talked about ah kind of getting better for ourselves. And um i I have to admit, I put on a pair of pants today that I have not worn in almost 10 years.
00:03:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:03:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Wow, look at you go.
00:03:10
Kendahl
um I so I will admit that it's not a Zimpik, not going that far. But it it is a it is a drug that helps me with some other medical conditions. And it does have the benefit of helping me with some of my weight.
00:03:26
Kendahl
And um on top of changing a lot of eating habits, on top of doing a lot of other things in my life, I went from 256 on this challenge, when I started this in December,
00:03:38
Kendahl
And I am currently at 228. Yeah.
00:03:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Dang, look at you go with your little booster shot.
00:03:44
Kendahl
yeah I, you know, I mean, I wish it was as easy as saying it's it's all drug enhanced. But, you know, I mean, there's there's a lot of work involved. And I've changed in my eating habits entirely.
00:03:56
Kendahl
um i I rarely drink soda anymore ah because it just tastes like garbage to me now. So i drink a lot of water.
00:04:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:04:05
Kendahl
um ah Heavy protein. Most of my lunches are like ah nuts and fruits. um And then, I mean, I still eat my normal dinners. Like dinner is normal. It's as normal as it gets.
00:04:17
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:04:18
Kendahl
Like tonight I had two pot pies. So I'm not, I'm not like faking it to make a type situation. So... You know, i'll still, i'll still have a scarf down four pieces of pizza from time to time. So this isn't saying that I'm, I'm, you know, completely going away from anything good. I still eat as a normal person. I had, I had two scoops of ice cream last night for dessert.
00:04:38
Kendahl
um I'm not moving away from these things.
00:04:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice.
00:04:40
Kendahl
I'm just, no, no, no.
00:04:40
Julian Contreras Jr
You're not starving yourself.
00:04:42
Kendahl
I'm, I'm, but I'm, I'm taking a very active control of what I eat and how I eat it.
00:04:42
Julian Contreras Jr
OK, good.
00:04:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it took me a little bit while to go and start really moving around.
00:04:49
Kendahl
So
00:04:53
Julian Contreras Jr
I mean, I would go on my walks, but that was only like, wasn't doing much.
00:04:57
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:04:58
Julian Contreras Jr
But during the Super Bowl, I text a buddy of mine. He's a faithful listener. So shout out Casey. He, I asked him, hey, are you part of this program where we can go to the gym?
00:05:12
Julian Contreras Jr
You know, and he's like, no, but I want to be. And so ever since that day, We are, quote unquote, gym buddies. I don't know how else you say that.
00:05:22
Julian Contreras Jr
we just go to the gym together.
00:05:25
Kendahl
You bros to the gym. It works.
00:05:29
Julian Contreras Jr
okay, yeah. So poetic.
00:05:33
Julian Contreras Jr
But neither one of us want to be the person that breaks our, don't want to say dates, but they're not, you know, just when we go. but Neither one of us wants to be like,
00:05:42
Kendahl
call You call it whatever is comfortable in your world. Don't don't don't don't just shy away from from being comfortable, man.
00:05:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, I'm comfortable with a lot of things. um
00:05:52
Kendahl
That's not who we are.
00:05:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:05:53
Kendahl
ha, ha.
00:05:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, you've met me. I'm comfortable.
00:05:55
Kendahl
ah a
00:05:56
Julian Contreras Jr
But he's married and has kids. I'm married have kids. So we we just make it work. Both our wives understand that we're bettering ourselves. So that's where we go.
00:06:04
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:06:06
Julian Contreras Jr
It's not too far. It's in town. So we're not gone for forever. We're not...
00:06:11
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:06:11
Julian Contreras Jr
going to the gym for 18 hours and then, oh, hey, how were you guys yesterday? Didn't see you.
00:06:17
Kendahl
Yeah. I saw a thing a while back is like, uh, you could have a husband that works out or you can have a husband that's present. it's like, yeah, I think you can have both.
00:06:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:06:26
Kendahl
Right?
00:06:27
Julian Contreras Jr
I totally agree. I can't stand being in there for more than two hours.
00:06:29
Kendahl
But.
00:06:32
Julian Contreras Jr
it just feels like too much at some points.
00:06:35
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:06:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Because there's all those gym groups. There's the four or five friends that are out in the corner lifting a ton of weights and spotting each other. Being kind of loud with their conversation and laughing. Which is totally fine.
00:06:48
Julian Contreras Jr
I get it.
00:06:49
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:06:49
Julian Contreras Jr
You're with friends. I get it. But then you get the people that are working out by themselves and you see, going to shout out Joey Swole videos.
00:07:01
Kendahl
Okay.
00:07:01
Julian Contreras Jr
You've seen his stuff where you don't want to be that gym creep that accidentally looks the wrong way at the wrong time. And all of a sudden you're in somebody's video as a creep.
00:07:07
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:07:10
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't do that. So I i get in there. We talk, we do our thing. Eyes forward, you know, so not that there's anything. yeah It's so, it's so sad that you can't look around the gym.
00:07:23
Julian Contreras Jr
without somebody thinking you're checking somebody out.
00:07:23
Kendahl
I know. Creeping up on him. I know.
00:07:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. You can't even like adjust your surroundings and know where stuff is.
00:07:28
Kendahl
I know.
00:07:31
Kendahl
Zone out. yeah Yeah. Well, I remember when i used to be pretty regular the gym, especially when I was on the treadmill. If there wasn't a TV in front of me, I'm just zoning out. i'm not even It doesn't matter what's in front of me. I'm not looking. I'm not trying to you know be all creeped out. i'm I'm literally just zoned into myself and zoned out to the world. like I'm not even paying attention to what's going on.
00:07:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.
00:07:53
Kendahl
And especially if I had like music going, um this is, you know, pre podcast, you know, the world wasn't all in that level.
00:08:00
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:08:00
Kendahl
But ah yeah, I mean, and and that's the thing is that if you're looking in the wrong direction anymore, it's like, no, no, no, no. no no no i'm not even looking. No, no, no, no, no. I'm not. done That's not what I'm doing. and I'm literally focused on myself.
00:08:12
Kendahl
You just happen to be in the direction of my zoning out moment.
00:08:15
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it's a whole thing.
00:08:15
Kendahl
but
00:08:17
Julian Contreras Jr
I will say yesterday when I went, I forgot my headphones. I remembered everything else, but I got to the parking lot and I was like patting myself down.
00:08:21
Kendahl
Oh,
00:08:25
Julian Contreras Jr
was like, oh, I forgot them.
00:08:28
Kendahl
Man, that's the worst.
00:08:29
Julian Contreras Jr
um like, okay, that's your fault.
00:08:31
Kendahl
That's the worst.
00:08:31
Julian Contreras Jr
You're going in. Like...
00:08:33
Kendahl
Like, even when I go for a bike ride, I've got to have something in my head. Because otherwise, just the noise, other everything else distracts me.
00:08:42
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah So I was on the treadmill and I was flipping through the channels that were available to the treadmill. Luckily, i will tell you Fast and Furious was on.
00:08:53
Kendahl
Oh, ah good distraction.
00:08:55
Julian Contreras Jr
I do not need volume or sound to know exactly what is happening in that movie.
00:09:00
Kendahl
you you just You're rolling it through on your own.
00:09:01
Julian Contreras Jr
I've seen it so many times I can hear it.
00:09:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. So luckily that saved me and then a basketball game came on and so I just watched that.
00:09:10
Kendahl
Nice.
00:09:10
Julian Contreras Jr
But it's good. i Unlike you, I refuse to weigh myself since we've gone. I weighed myself before. now I just want a consistent routine.
00:09:22
Julian Contreras Jr
Get that under control and then eventually I'll weigh myself. Maybe March something. see See where I'm at.
00:09:29
Kendahl
Good.
00:09:30
Julian Contreras Jr
But I'm making all the right choices now.
00:09:30
Kendahl
Well, Yeah, I mean, I think that's the thing, right? is it's We're at that age where we've got either figure it out or unfortunately catches up to us real fast, right?
00:09:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it does.
00:09:41
Kendahl
So, but, all right, stop stop talking about old man stuff and, and you know, all that fun things.
00:09:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Real fast.
00:09:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Hey, it wasn't the weather, alright?
00:09:49
Kendahl
It's not the weather, that's true.
00:09:50
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:09:50
Kendahl
We're not talking about what we're what what aches our bones.
00:09:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:09:53
Kendahl
ah But I do have to say, i did um I did actually catch a couple of good shows.

Movie Reviews and Thoughts

00:09:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:10:00
Kendahl
um So I caught a new movie that just came out to streaming. um So I was kind of excited for that.
00:10:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Alright.
00:10:08
Kendahl
And then I caught an oldie but a goodie. um So on on my end, the the one that I ended up watching was Sonic 3.
00:10:12
Julian Contreras Jr
okay
00:10:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, you finally saw it.
00:10:19
Kendahl
I did. um So the funny thing is ah my wife has been sick.
00:10:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:10:25
Kendahl
it's That's why we're kind of delayed on this, on this cast. um So my wife has been sick and then I got sick and then my wife got sick again. And this, it's kind of just rolling around the house right now. Well, um the other day she just was not feeling it. Didn't want to go anywhere. Didn't want to do anything.
00:10:40
Kendahl
was Friday night. And i was like, well, you know what? Let's go, let's just go grab some food, come back and watch a good movie. Yeah. Well, i I don't even know what prompted it. I was like, I wonder what's what's actually on Paramount right now because I rarely go to that unless there's something I'm directly looking for when I'm on there.
00:10:59
Kendahl
Because let's be honest, Paramount, it's kind of the last ditch effort for some of these places is to find something good.
00:11:07
Julian Contreras Jr
ah I don't know. That's where the challenge is. I'm not going to talk crap on Paramount.
00:11:11
Kendahl
I mean, but I'm saying like there's there's you can only find like maybe a goodie or two on there and then the rest of it's just and it's OK.
00:11:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:11:20
Kendahl
Right. Or Netflix, you can typically find something relatively decent and not have to look too hard.
00:11:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:11:26
Kendahl
Same thing with, you know, like obviously Apple and Amazon. There's a lot of goodies out there. Paramount's one of those. You have to either go to it specifically or you might get lucky and find one or two goodies that you already knew were there.
00:11:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:11:39
Kendahl
So anyhow, um I just happened to pop it on and and Sonic 3 was new. So was like, sure, why not?
00:11:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:11:47
Kendahl
So we watched it and I'll be honest with you, I was surprisingly entertained by it.
00:11:51
Julian Contreras Jr
You like the animated John Wick?
00:11:54
Kendahl
What's that?
00:11:55
Julian Contreras Jr
You like the animated John Wick?
00:11:57
Kendahl
ah What? Where am I lost?
00:12:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Shadow?
00:12:03
Kendahl
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, because it's Keanu Reeves.
00:12:04
Julian Contreras Jr
Come on.
00:12:06
Kendahl
I gotcha.
00:12:07
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah I was like, what?
00:12:07
Kendahl
Okay. My brain was off on that one for a second. Yes, that was really good because like, I don't know, like 10, 15 minutes into it, my older son looks at me and goes, Dad, isn't that Keanu Reeves? I'm like, yeah, I think it is.
00:12:22
Kendahl
I hadn't even thought about it. And then I'm listening to the voice and I was like, oh, yeah, OK, I hear.
00:12:26
Julian Contreras Jr
There you go.
00:12:27
Kendahl
But yeah, it was actually really good. I was I was surprised how good it was. um I had not seen the second one. I had seen the first one. I had seen like parts and bits of the second one. And it never just, I don't know, didn't I don't want to say didn't catch my attention.
00:12:40
Kendahl
But I felt like this one had a lot of really good humor. And honestly, if you're in for, if you like the Sonic movies, you'll love it. If you're in for a good family movie, it's ah it's got everything.
00:12:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:12:50
Kendahl
I think it's got a lot of humor, especially with Jim Carrey. That was just, it was so good.
00:12:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. One thing I did notice, and I think I brought it up when I did a review on it, did you notice that they're kind of phasing out the humans?
00:13:04
Kendahl
Yeah, it's focused a lot on just the characters.
00:13:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Like even James Marsden is not in it a lot anymore.
00:13:09
Kendahl
Yeah. No, like 15 minutes max.
00:13:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and the sheriff who was on the roof playing hockey with the gem.
00:13:17
Kendahl
Oh, geez. 30 seconds.
00:13:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that was it.
00:13:21
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:13:21
Julian Contreras Jr
but They're contracted to do these movies and they're like, okay, well, I guess if you only want me for 30 seconds, I'll do it.
00:13:24
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:13:26
Kendahl
Right.
00:13:29
Kendahl
Yeah. But I mean, it was still, though, it was really good. I thought they did a great job of making the characters real, if that makes any sense. You know, like Shadow, you really felt like, okay, you felt why he was frustrated and why he was angry.
00:13:42
Kendahl
Like, you understood it.
00:13:42
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:13:43
Kendahl
So I thought it was good. I liked it. um And then the other one I watched is an older one, 2014. This is ah The Equalizer.
00:13:54
Julian Contreras Jr
OK.
00:13:54
Kendahl
So Denzel Washington. um I had never...
00:13:56
Julian Contreras Jr
The first one, or did you watch whole series?
00:13:58
Kendahl
and No, I just watched the first one.
00:14:00
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:14:01
Kendahl
um But I have the second one on my list to watch next because I liked the first one.
00:14:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, they're really good.
00:14:07
Kendahl
um I will have to say, i the one thing I didn't like about it was I felt like, and I'm not one to say this very often, but I felt like the F word in it was so like overdone.
00:14:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Forced.
00:14:22
Kendahl
Yeah, it was forced. it was like It was a conjecture between words, right? And so i felt I just felt like there were so many moments where it didn't need to happen. And I do understand the the reasoning on some level because Denzel Washington character, Robert, he even says, why do you have to use that language?
00:14:40
Kendahl
So you can tell it kind of flusters him when he hears it. And so it's it's kind of this riling up the thing for him to... to be more involved in the in the character that's speaking like that. And I get that.
00:14:51
Kendahl
But at the same time, I felt like they just, they really overused it. It was unnecessary. There are some movies, it makes sense. There are parts, absolutely, I get it. I mean, it's it's a part of either the shtick that's going on or, you know, kind of the the theme of the character. Totally get it.
00:15:08
Kendahl
This one, it just felt so forced and random. And like I said, just like connecting two words. That's called the conjecture. And it was my teacher moment.
00:15:19
Kendahl
But it just it didn't make sense.
00:15:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. It's frustrating.
00:15:21
Kendahl
And so I... Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a good word for it. So... Anyway, but overall, though, it is it is a very good movie. um i i I really loved the the fact that there were some faces that you recognize. i didn't even think we're in the movie.
00:15:36
Kendahl
And then, um yeah, Denzel Washington's character. it's just phenomenal.
00:15:42
Julian Contreras Jr
Nice.
00:15:43
Kendahl
So, yeah, I liked it.
00:15:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Very cool, da
00:15:45
Kendahl
Yeah, that was a good movie.
00:15:45
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm glad you finally saw it.
00:15:47
Kendahl
Well, it was my dad's, like one of my dad's favorite movies. And um when I was going back and forth between here and Idaho to see him when he was really sick, um he kept wanting me to watch it with him.
00:15:59
Kendahl
I love the man, but he kept falling asleep.
00:16:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:16:02
Kendahl
So I never finished it.
00:16:03
Julian Contreras Jr
As Dad's do.
00:16:03
Kendahl
And so I'd only, yeah, so I only got like 10 minutes into it. And then I'd be like, oh well, okay, I don't want to watch it without him. So I'd wait.

Discussing 'The White Lotus'

00:16:10
Kendahl
But anyway, so yeah, that's that was that that was good.
00:16:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:16:13
Kendahl
I enjoyed him.
00:16:15
Julian Contreras Jr
Awesome. I didn't watch too many movies. Well, actually, I did yesterday. I caught up on a couple. I watched... This isn't part of the show or topic, but Young Guns, again.
00:16:26
Kendahl
Oh, that's good.
00:16:27
Julian Contreras Jr
and just watched it, like, four or five months ago, but I felt like I forgot it a little bit.
00:16:29
Kendahl
ah amelia e Isn't it Amelia Estevez?
00:16:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Charlie Sheen.
00:16:35
Kendahl
Charlie Sheen?
00:16:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Keep going.
00:16:37
Kendahl
I'm trying to think. I can see the face.
00:16:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Kiefer Sutherland.
00:16:39
Kendahl
Who?
00:16:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Kiefer.
00:16:40
Kendahl
Kiefer Sutherland, right?
00:16:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes.
00:16:42
Kendahl
Yeah, Kiefer Sutherland. I can see some of the faces.
00:16:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:16:44
Kendahl
Yeah, definitely lot of...
00:16:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Dylan McDermott.
00:16:46
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:16:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Blue Diamond Phillips.
00:16:47
Kendahl
Yeah, a lot of people you'll remember.
00:16:48
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a great, great movie.
00:16:49
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:16:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. So I watched that one and then I did catch up on one that is on my list just to watch it again. Just to make sure I had the facts in my head.
00:16:59
Kendahl
Alright.
00:16:59
Julian Contreras Jr
We'll get to that one in a minute. But I do have to go back and ah make a correction. Because even I am wrong sometimes.
00:17:06
Kendahl
No.
00:17:07
Julian Contreras Jr
That White Lotus, I mentioned that Annie Murphy's in that. It just happens to look like her.
00:17:15
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:17:16
Julian Contreras Jr
On the little poster there, she's not in it.
00:17:16
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:17:18
Julian Contreras Jr
I mistakenly had Michelle... Is it Monahan? Moynihan?
00:17:24
Kendahl
Oh. Yeah, and I know who you're talking about.
00:17:26
Julian Contreras Jr
That's who I thought was Annie Murphy.
00:17:27
Kendahl
I can't think of name.
00:17:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. But this season, i gotta tell you, it's already starting out. It's only two episodes in now. Second one was on Sunday night. If you like The White Lotus or haven't even seen it, please jump on HBO and check it out.
00:17:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Probably one of the best series out there that I know of. It's definitely becoming one of my most favorite shows.
00:17:51
Kendahl
And it's an anthology, so you don't have to watch the you don't have to watch the episodes prior to get
00:17:51
Julian Contreras Jr
And I told you.
00:17:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:17:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, it's actually turning into kind of not.
00:18:02
Kendahl
okay
00:18:03
Julian Contreras Jr
So characters from season one were in season two, but not in a huge need-to-know basis.
00:18:09
Kendahl
Right. Right.
00:18:11
Julian Contreras Jr
But then there's a character from season one that's in season three.
00:18:16
Kendahl
okay Oh, okay.
00:18:17
Julian Contreras Jr
So now you have to know what's going on.
00:18:20
Kendahl
Oh, Okay. That was one of the appeals of the show that a lot of people had was that it was kind of like, it's a terrible reference, but sort of in the American ah horror story, you have you have some people that are playing in it, but the storylines don't need to match up.
00:18:34
Kendahl
You don't need to watch season to season to keep up. You can just kind of go in and and watch.
00:18:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. Yeah. You could still get away with that because i think they do a really good job of going through and explaining where they're going with this.
00:18:44
Kendahl
and Okay.
00:18:45
Julian Contreras Jr
ah Mike White is a genius, by the way. He's the executive producer. He writes it. He directs it.
00:18:52
Kendahl
I see. Yeah. Yeah, he was like a triple threat on this one.
00:18:53
Julian Contreras Jr
I think this is all his baby.
00:18:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And if you remember Survivor, if you're Survivor fan at all, he was on Survivor.
00:19:05
Kendahl
Oh, I didn't know that.
00:19:05
Julian Contreras Jr
David versus Goliath.
00:19:07
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:19:09
Julian Contreras Jr
So knowing that and knowing who Mike White is, he's actually brought people from his tribe to be part of these shows.
00:19:18
Kendahl
Oh, that's cool.
00:19:19
Julian Contreras Jr
They're in each of the three seasons. So that's really cool.
00:19:23
Kendahl
Nice.
00:19:24
Julian Contreras Jr
But I told you I would have a list of more actors that I really like that are in this. So I've already mentioned Michelle, but Leslie Bibb is in this. Jason Isaacs, who's in a ton of things.
00:19:35
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:19:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Parker Posey and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
00:19:43
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:19:43
Julian Contreras Jr
You might know that last name.
00:19:45
Kendahl
Yep, yep, yep.
00:19:46
Julian Contreras Jr
And my ah absolute favorite, Walter Goggins.
00:19:50
Kendahl
Okay.
00:19:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, they're all doing a great job so far. Loving this season. But I wanted to go through and make that correction. It's not Annie Murphy. I apologize.
00:20:00
Kendahl
Sorry, Annie.
00:20:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, sorry. Still love you. but Not in this one.
00:20:05
Kendahl
All right. So ah should we get to our main theme or did you have anything else you want to bring up?
00:20:11
Julian Contreras Jr
We have one more that I want to get to real fast.
00:20:14
Kendahl
Yeah, go ahead.
00:20:15
Julian Contreras Jr
And then we will. Remember last week we were going to see The Monkey.
00:20:19
Kendahl
Yes.
00:20:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Osgood Perkins. It's supposed to be a scary movie. So I brought Casey with me and we watched it
00:20:29
Julian Contreras Jr
super fun. I had a lot of fun in this movie.
00:20:31
Kendahl
Okay.
00:20:33
Julian Contreras Jr
It's not so much scary as it is just ridiculous.
00:20:37
Kendahl
Okay. And does it, is it like in the, in the theme of, so, so the the, the thing is, is I did not get to the theaters because my wife was sick.
00:20:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh,
00:20:46
Kendahl
And so, ah so is it, is it a movie that knows what it is and it plays on it or.
00:20:46
Julian Contreras Jr
ah that's fine.
00:20:52
Julian Contreras Jr
um
00:20:52
Kendahl
um
00:20:53
Julian Contreras Jr
At first, it's trying to lean really into the dark comedy. And then it tries to get to a splatter horror where all the kills are just completely ridiculous.
00:20:58
Kendahl
Okay.
00:21:05
Julian Contreras Jr
There's blood everywhere. People get it in their eyes. and You can see from the trailer, he takes it the his glasses down.
00:21:10
Kendahl
Right. Yep.
00:21:12
Julian Contreras Jr
They're all pretty much like that.
00:21:14
Kendahl
Okay.
00:21:15
Julian Contreras Jr
There is a huge funny cameo at the very beginning of this movie. That as soon as I saw this person walk in, I was like, what? I didn't know you were in this.
00:21:27
Julian Contreras Jr
That's crazy.
00:21:27
Kendahl
Hmm.
00:21:28
Kendahl
Okay.
00:21:30
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a lot of fun. Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is it make a ton of sense towards the end? No, not at all.
00:21:40
Kendahl
Okay.
00:21:40
Julian Contreras Jr
But it is what it is. You're going to have a great time for an hour and 38 minutes.
00:21:45
Kendahl
Okay.
00:21:46
Julian Contreras Jr
And Theo James, he's a good looking guy. plays two parts. so
00:21:51
Kendahl
All right. right
00:21:52
Julian Contreras Jr
I give it a 7. It's just a lot of fun.
00:21:56
Kendahl
Well, i will I will tell you very just really quickly.
00:21:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Now...
00:21:59
Kendahl
So we my wife was talking about going and seeing Captain America, but um I will tell you, I am not going to see this in theaters. um And this kind of plays into the theme of what one of my movies is on my list tonight.
00:22:13
Kendahl
But I feel like the MCU has just forgotten itself. And this movie has shown in theaters that it might have forgotten itself again because it's not doing very well. it's just it's It's going down as one of one of their worst box office hits.
00:22:23
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:22:27
Kendahl
money dollar for dollar type thing how much they've spent to how much they're getting so uh i
00:22:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Critique

00:22:33
Julian Contreras Jr
I think I might pass him on too.
00:22:33
Kendahl
just i have to put that out there because i know some of our listeners were kind of looking forward to review on that but i i'm gonna have to put it aside i i don't want to waste my money to go see a movie that i'm gonna be disappointed in
00:22:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. I mean, that's what we do. That's what I do.
00:22:47
Kendahl
right
00:22:48
Julian Contreras Jr
I watch a ton of stuff. But that one I will wait for Disney+. plus
00:22:53
Kendahl
Yeah, i'm I'm agreeing on that. So anyway, so without further ado.
00:22:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes, we are going to jump right into our topic. It's called With a Twist. It's movies that Kendall and I wish we could see again for the first time, not knowing the outcome.
00:23:12
Kendahl
hmm. Mm
00:23:13
Julian Contreras Jr
There's a couple on here where Kendall got spoiled. We talked about that last episode, and I still do not know who did that to you That's completely rude.
00:23:16
Kendahl
hmm.
00:23:20
Julian Contreras Jr
because there's always that week where you don't talk about it. If somebody hasn't seen it, your conversation with somebody that has is private.
00:23:24
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah.
00:23:28
Kendahl
Right.
00:23:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Somebody walks up, you're like, oh, we're talking about this. Have you seen it? No? Okay, we'll stop.
00:23:33
Kendahl
Well, in today's world with social media and everything else, it's it's like you have to either like choose to, especially if it's a big movie, right? You have to either block it off altogether and say, I'm just not going to look at social media for a while.
00:23:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.
00:23:46
Kendahl
Or you have to be active. I mean, i remember what was it I remember not too long ago, you and I were both extremely active and I'm just, we were ignoring everything that came across for something that we were going to watch and darn, can't remember what it was.
00:23:59
Kendahl
But like, I remember texts back and forth were like, yeah, I'm every time it comes up, I'm ignoring it. And it's just because i you know, you have to do that. But these, these are movies that we didn't have that opportunity.
00:24:12
Kendahl
And so either he won, it was spoiled or two, it was so, ah I think visionary, we'll say visionary in some sense of the movies, the way they shifted things because they have quite literally spawned either movies in the same genre to follow suit or to they have changed the movie going experience due to what they did in these movies and the way they ended them.
00:24:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah,
00:24:35
Julian Contreras Jr
because honestly, I could come out... Obviously, I see a lot of movies early. Not as early as you do, Mr. Amazon, but... i I could easily come directly out of the theater and post on our Instagram, hey, this movie and all the spoilers.
00:24:51
Julian Contreras Jr
But that would be kind of a jerk thing to do.
00:24:51
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:24:53
Julian Contreras Jr
So that's why ah haven't done that.
00:24:56
Kendahl
All right. Well, so I will preface this that i I chose, I only have one, two, three, four.
00:24:58
Julian Contreras Jr
but
00:25:04
Kendahl
I have only five movies, but then I have a trilogy that I threw in there. And the reason I threw the trilogy is because it was it was so like impactful. Yeah.
00:25:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:25:13
Kendahl
But I think when you look at the movies that I picked, they all had a fundamental like memory to me. And when I saw them and and like i I've gone back and watched each one of these again since I originally saw it more than once.
00:25:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:25:31
Kendahl
Even though I've seen this, it ah the very first time I did see these movies, it was like, wow, that was crazy. Right?
00:25:41
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah Okay. So let's, let's not spoil it anymore. Huh?
00:25:46
Kendahl
okay
00:25:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Go ahead and jump in with your first one. If I have the same one on my list, because once again, we have not shared our lists.
00:25:53
Kendahl
Yes, no.
00:25:53
Julian Contreras Jr
We will talk about that movie one time and then that's it. And then we'll move on.
00:25:58
Kendahl
All right, so I'm going to go for my newest movie on the list, and and it's only because of the conversation we were just having.
00:25:58
Julian Contreras Jr
So,
00:26:04
Kendahl
This is Avengers Endgame.
00:26:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh. Yeah.
00:26:08
Kendahl
I put that on my list. So 2019, 94% of Rotten Tomatoes. Everybody knows this movie. It single-handedly finalized the MCU universe as we knew it up to that point.
00:26:22
Kendahl
And i I truly believe it was the endgame of the MCU universe.
00:26:22
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:26:27
Kendahl
Ever since then, they have not been able to achieve the the magnitude that was the compilation of all those different movies coming together to create one single storyline that just spanned across so many things. You had Iron Man, you had Hulk, you had the Avengers, you had Captain America.
00:26:46
Kendahl
I mean, you had all you had Spider-Man on some level. You had all these things that were all culminating back to a single moment in in honestly cinematic history because it broke records.
00:26:56
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:26:57
Kendahl
It it sent people to theaters over and over again like they hadn't seen before. And it it legitimately was an experience. The minute that Captain America put his hand up and took Thor's hammer, I'll never remember.
00:27:11
Kendahl
mean, I'll never forget that feeling of like, holy crap, did he just do that?
00:27:16
Julian Contreras Jr
The whole theater cheered multiple times.
00:27:18
Kendahl
Everybody, right?
00:27:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Every showing I went to, I think I saw it three times.
00:27:23
Kendahl
Yeah, I went saw it three times.
00:27:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Every time that happened.
00:27:25
Kendahl
ye Yes, every time. And I was right there with him. And so to go back and experience that again would be awesome.
00:27:34
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah are you including both movies that made endgame
00:27:35
Kendahl
like that's
00:27:39
Kendahl
ah Infinity War and Endgame?
00:27:41
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah that's one movie to me that's a and b
00:27:43
Kendahl
Yeah, I would say i would say that's that's a good... I'll go with that, yeah.
00:27:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, nice.
00:27:48
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:27:49
Julian Contreras Jr
That's an awesome movie. I didn't even go that far ahead. i was going with mind blowing movies. I didn't even think about emotional stuff.
00:27:58
Kendahl
Well, see, and I did. i i have two on mine that are in the emotional category. And one is that trilogy, and one is the is the Avengers.
00:28:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:28:08
Kendahl
So, all right.
00:28:08
Julian Contreras Jr
So you went with the end game, which is good. I'm going to follow that one up with the first one on my list in no particular order.

Iconic Movie Twists

00:28:16
Julian Contreras Jr
The Sixth Sense from 1999. Because
00:28:20
Kendahl
I left that one off my list on purpose because I thought it was too...
00:28:25
Julian Contreras Jr
you knew I would do it?
00:28:25
Kendahl
I don't want say obvious, but no, I figured that you would probably do it. Yeah. I mean, honestly, I figured it was probably going to come up in our conversation.
00:28:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, this is by far, I think, in my opinion, the best M. Night Shyamalan movie that he has in his repertoire.
00:28:40
Kendahl
You mean the only one? I'm just kidding.
00:28:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Come on. He's done. All right. Signs.
00:28:47
Kendahl
Science is pretty good.
00:28:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Signs is a good two.
00:28:48
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:50
Julian Contreras Jr
And then you can make a case for each one that you individually love. But in my opinion, this one, if you saw this in the theater the first time on opening night and you hadn't had this spoiled, it gets to the end and you realize what is happening and that Bruce Willis is a ghost and
00:29:00
Kendahl
Right. Right.
00:29:12
Kendahl
right
00:29:13
Julian Contreras Jr
and He has no idea. Oh my gosh. It was, like I said, mind-blowing at first.
00:29:18
Kendahl
right well and and to And then to be able to watch it again and see all the different signs that say, yeah, that's what's going on. Because his wife is ignoring him, even though he thinks she's just ignoring him to be a wife.
00:29:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:33
Kendahl
It's because he's not there. you know Or the fact that he has the same clothes on for the entirety of the movie.
00:29:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, most of the time it's that jacket. And so you just pay attention to the coat and then just like a hoodie and coats, people wear the same hoodie every day.
00:29:43
Kendahl
Right.
00:29:47
Kendahl
Right. Yeah.
00:29:48
Julian Contreras Jr
So you don't really think about it because everything's a suit. I'm not a suit guy. So it's a gray suit. It's a gray suit to me. Like it's, it's gonna look the same.
00:29:56
Kendahl
Mm-hmm. Right. No, that's a good one. That's really good.
00:29:59
Julian Contreras Jr
And then the you know fact that you put in the color red, if you notice everything red is when he's seeing dead people.
00:30:00
Kendahl
That's really good.
00:30:03
Kendahl
Right. And the significance of it. Mm-hmm.
00:30:09
Julian Contreras Jr
I think, yeah, Haley Joel Osment kicked it out of the park in that one.
00:30:14
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah, that was, I mean, honestly, that was that was one of the very first, like, ah crazy surprise endings as ah as a kid that I remembered.
00:30:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:30:25
Kendahl
So I say kid, but.
00:30:25
Julian Contreras Jr
And do you remember the... Who played the guy that was in his bathroom at the very beginning of the movie? Why this all happened?
00:30:33
Kendahl
Oh, it's um it's. Oh, yeah, I was gonna say it's one of the Backstreet Boys.
00:30:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Donnie Wahlberg yes you are correct no it's not
00:30:43
Kendahl
Not Backstreet Boys. What was he? Well, he wasn't wasn't he in some type of wasn't he in music?
00:30:48
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah yeah new kids yeah alright that's the sixth sense if you haven't seen that one for some reason came out 1999 it's great movie
00:30:50
Kendahl
New Kids on the Block. That's what it is. I'm like, geez. Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:03
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:31:03
Julian Contreras Jr
it's a great movie
00:31:05
Kendahl
all All right. Okay. So my my next one is 1999 as well. It was the pinnacle of human or of, ah yeah, human societal perfection.
00:31:17
Kendahl
What movie?
00:31:19
Julian Contreras Jr
I think it's going to be one on my list, and I'm going to go with Fight Club.
00:31:23
Kendahl
Oh, no, that is on my list. We'll get to that one. This one is the Matrix.
00:31:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, I...
00:31:29
Kendahl
Because if you remember, they they said that in 1999, it was the pinnacle of human perfection, because it was the so societal perfection and blah, blah, blah, right? And that's what they based the Matrix off of, because this is several, you know, generations into the future.
00:31:44
Kendahl
um
00:31:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:31:45
Kendahl
But yeah, I mean, this movie is one of those I was talking about spawned an entire generation of movie going um and to this day, I think is not deserving of the rated R ah rating that it's got.
00:31:57
Kendahl
it There's just nothing in there that deserves the rated R. um I mean, there is a little bit of violence, but even then it's all it's all heavily, heavily simulated.
00:32:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:32:07
Kendahl
It's not you're not actually watching people get shot with a bullet most of the time.
00:32:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:32:12
Kendahl
right there's only a few times that actually happens so um you're right
00:32:15
Julian Contreras Jr
you're yeah You're not, but you are. So I think that's why it gets the rated R. There's not a ton of language. There's only that little bit of nudity.
00:32:23
Kendahl
no
00:32:25
Julian Contreras Jr
um
00:32:27
Kendahl
There's this is one of those movies.
00:32:27
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah.
00:32:29
Kendahl
There was a lot of there was a lot of controversy behind it. But regardless of all of that, this was a movie that, you know, introduced the idea of bullet time. Right. Introduced the whole concept that what we live is this construct of a of an imaginary society that was designed by robots so that we and feel more comfortable in our existence.
00:32:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.
00:32:48
Kendahl
Right. So, I mean, all these crazy thought processes that. people never really put into, into any type of functional thought. It was just, uh, Oh, why, wait, why, why would I think like that?
00:33:04
Kendahl
Now I'm thinking like that.
00:33:04
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:33:05
Kendahl
And it's just, it provokes this whole thought process. So very, i think it's one of those movies again, I'd love to watch it for the first time. Um, everybody that's in it, but speaking of Keanu Reeves, you know, um, so yeah,
00:33:16
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:33:18
Kendahl
Yeah, great movie. I think it definitely is on this list because, and by the way, it was 83% of Rotten Tomatoes. So still still high up there.
00:33:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And for me, I feel like if that was a standalone movie, absolute masterpiece. 9 out of 10, 10 out of 10, great.
00:33:36
Kendahl
Yep, yep.
00:33:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Unfortunately, it was drugged down by what was to come.
00:33:42
Kendahl
Yeah, I i mean, i don't, I'm separating it out entirely. I still think the second and third one, like to me, I still enjoyed those movies.
00:33:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:33:49
Kendahl
Did I enjoy them on the level that I enjoyed The Matrix? Absolutely not.
00:33:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I think that's why I didn't even make my list or even thought about it. Because when I think of The Matrix, I think of the whole thing.
00:33:56
Kendahl
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:33:59
Julian Contreras Jr
but But yeah, when you do sit down and talk about the first one, yeah.
00:34:03
Kendahl
Yep, and what it created. Yeah.
00:34:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, i i agree.
00:34:06
Kendahl
Yep. All right.
00:34:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, I'm going to let you get to the one we just mentioned. So I'm going take the next one on my list and go The Usual Suspects, 1995.
00:34:16
Kendahl
Oh, oh man.
00:34:16
Julian Contreras Jr
nineteen ninety five This one is rated r stars Kevin Spacey, and I got a ah few other names here that I can't pronounce.
00:34:19
Kendahl
Okay. Good one. I like that.
00:34:29
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah this movie is so good.
00:34:31
Kendahl
i mean, oh, that's what you're telling me.
00:34:34
Julian Contreras Jr
I just barely finished watching it before we started recording because that's what I had to finish up.
00:34:39
Kendahl
Okay.
00:34:41
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's it's crazy. If I were to see that in the theater now and watch everything that was going on and actually pay attention and listen, because if you if you get up and go to Popcorn and you miss some stuff, you've missed a lot.
00:34:53
Kendahl
You miss everything. Yeah.
00:34:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:34:55
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:34:56
Julian Contreras Jr
When it gets to that end and you figure out that Spacey is Kaiser Soze and he's been making up that whole story with stuff on the bulletin board behind the cop that he's talking to,
00:35:05
Kendahl
The whole time.
00:35:10
Kendahl
Yep.
00:35:11
Julian Contreras Jr
He's even using the bottom ceramic stamp on the coffee cup.
00:35:14
Kendahl
Yep. um Yeah, because that's that's when it all clicks is when the coffee cup breaks and you look it, you're like, oh what? Yeah.
00:35:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. It's crazy. And then he goes out of the police station and it shows his foot.
00:35:25
Kendahl
With the limp. Yeah.
00:35:27
Julian Contreras Jr
And then all of a sudden it's not. Oh, man. And then he folds out his hand because it's cramped from him holding it like that.
00:35:34
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:35:35
Julian Contreras Jr
It's a great movie.
00:35:35
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:35:38
Julian Contreras Jr
And...
00:35:38
Kendahl
Honestly, i think... Okay, so the funny thing is, is this this movie... ah Okay, my next movie, I'm not going to go into it just yet, but this my next movie plays on the same premise.
00:35:52
Kendahl
And this is exactly what I'm talking about. These are movies that spawned a process. And the usual suspect spawned the movie that to talk about next because it it had a it had a a a major figure within the movie that that played the whole thing out to a scene that you believed you understood until the last possible second. And then they throw everything out the window.
00:36:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. And I, I, it's a great movie. I've already talked about it. We've explained pretty much the ending and what happened, but I do want to bring up a couple little fun Easter eggs when you guys watch this movie. Cause I know you guys are going to go out and try to find some of these movies.
00:36:33
Julian Contreras Jr
And I highly recommend usual suspects because during the lineup scene, ah you may have heard these facts before when he steps forward and they have to say this line,
00:36:38
Kendahl
Oh, geez. I know what you're talking about this one. Yep.
00:36:46
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:36:47
Julian Contreras Jr
When he steps forward and you can see everybody just kind of start to laugh for no reason, he had actually farted and broke wind right before he said it.
00:36:52
Kendahl
yeah
00:37:00
Julian Contreras Jr
And everybody was trying to laugh and ignore it, but they left it in the movie because was just so funny.
00:37:06
Kendahl
Yep. So you're talking about Benicio del Toro. He's the one that, yeah.
00:37:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. He's right in the middle wearing the black leather coat with the red shirt.
00:37:12
Kendahl
yeah
00:37:15
Kendahl
Yep.
00:37:15
Julian Contreras Jr
As soon as he steps forward to say it, he starts to chuckle and you can see Keaton holding his mouth and he's trying not to laugh and the other guy, he hits him on the shoulder.
00:37:22
Kendahl
Yep.
00:37:26
Julian Contreras Jr
It's one of the Baldwins.
00:37:28
Kendahl
Yep.
00:37:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Is it Daniel?
00:37:30
Kendahl
I think it's Daniel Baldwin.
00:37:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:37:34
Kendahl
I'm looking it up.
00:37:34
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, he hits him on the shoulder and it's it's funny that they left it in the movie. It's great.
00:37:39
Kendahl
but I think it i think it it just kind of showed the dynamic that was the...
00:37:40
Julian Contreras Jr
And then
00:37:45
Kendahl
Oh, Stephen Baldwin, by the way.
00:37:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Steven, sorry.
00:37:47
Kendahl
um Yeah, that's all right. But it it kind of showed the dynamic of the you know of the actors in there and how much they were a part of the whole thing, right?
00:37:57
Kendahl
Like, they put themselves into everything, yeah.
00:37:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:38:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And then my second little funny Easter egg is towards the middle. They meet up with Robocop. I believe his name's Peter Weller. He goes by Redfoot in the movie.
00:38:08
Kendahl
Hmm. Mm hmm.
00:38:11
Julian Contreras Jr
He flips his cigarette at Steven Baldwin. It's supposed to hit him in the chest. All right. Now having an actor say, okay, so flick this cigarette and hit him in the chest seems pretty easy, but he flicks it.
00:38:19
Kendahl
OK.
00:38:27
Julian Contreras Jr
It hits him right in the eye.
00:38:30
Kendahl
Oh, geez.
00:38:31
Julian Contreras Jr
That's not what was supposed to happen. And so they kept in the part where it hits him in the eye and he reacts. He obviously swears and backs away really fast, but then that's where they cut and had a come back.
00:38:38
Kendahl
All right.
00:38:45
Kendahl
Okay.
00:38:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Because that cigarette actually hit him in the eyelid eye area.
00:38:50
Kendahl
Oh, wow. That's crazy.
00:38:51
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that was not supposed to happen.
00:38:52
Kendahl
I didn't know that. Didn't know that.
00:38:53
Julian Contreras Jr
For the movie effect, it was genius.
00:38:56
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:38:57
Julian Contreras Jr
So, those are my two little funny Easter eggs. Have fun watching those when you watch this incredible movie. We're going to move on.
00:39:04
Kendahl
Yeah. Okay. So mine, that so that was 1996, by the way, ah Usual Suspects was 1996. Isn't that right? um isn't that right
00:39:12
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah Five is what I have.
00:39:14
Kendahl
Oh, 1995. Okay. So in the, yeah, that's right. Because in the next year for my movie, this is, um I got to get it. ah Richard Gere and Edward Norton.
00:39:26
Kendahl
Primal Fear.
00:39:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Primal fear.
00:39:28
Kendahl
Okay, so this is, um so I apologize again, guys, we're talking spoilers. e and Edward Norton is this um this altar boy that gets up into um a whole scenario. So ah Richard Gere is interviewing everybody to figure out what happened to this, ah is it a bishop, I think, or something like that within the Catholic Church.
00:39:49
Kendahl
And um ah Edward Norton's character is kind of this altar boy that's being interviewed and the whole time he's playing up the storyline and they're basically you're falling into feeling bad for Edward Norton.
00:40:02
Kendahl
And then at the very end of the movie, we're talking like literal last few seconds, you find out that he made everything up and he was the bad guy.
00:40:12
Kendahl
And you're like, what?
00:40:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. yeah
00:40:14
Kendahl
What? So very, very much on the the you know idea of the usual suspects. I mean, it really played along into this. It was so... mind-blowing when I first saw it.
00:40:27
Kendahl
And I had not seen this in theaters. i I saw it in on VHS. I rented it from Blockbuster. so um But you you know that was that was I was like, holy crap, that's crazy.
00:40:39
Kendahl
i couldn't believe that. And so um I'm really surprised, though. It has 77% of Rotten Tomatoes, by the way. But I think it deserves more. It was a really great movie that drew you in and then flipped the script on you at the last second.
00:40:53
Kendahl
It's really great movie, though.
00:40:56
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah Yeah. Both of those actors did an amazing job, I believe. I missed this one, and my wife was the one who actually showed me this. She's like, you haven't seen Primal Fear? And i was like, no.
00:41:07
Julian Contreras Jr
She's like, okay we're we're watching that. You're going to love it. Sure enough, I did. And it's funny because it's usually me that's like, you haven't seen this? You haven't seen this? Where have you been?
00:41:16
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah. All right. What you got next?
00:41:21
Julian Contreras Jr
right, I'm going to go... with one that we know, we foreshadowed it, I'm gonna go Fight Club, 1999, rated R.
00:41:28
Kendahl
Okay. Good. Yeah.
00:41:30
Julian Contreras Jr
But I do wanna say that while I was doing this research, a pattern I found with movies on my list are some of these are the exact same director.
00:41:41
Kendahl
Oh, that's interesting.
00:41:42
Julian Contreras Jr
So Fight Club is David Fincher, who also directed another movie on my list
00:41:45
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:41:51
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:41:51
Julian Contreras Jr
And then that leads me to a movie that was by Christopher Nolan, who also did three other movies that were on my list.
00:41:56
Kendahl
Okay.
00:41:59
Kendahl
I can imagine one of them is... One of mine is Christopher Nolan as well.
00:42:03
Julian Contreras Jr
So just seeing these director's names when I was doing the research and writing it down, i was like, oh my gosh.
00:42:07
Kendahl
Yep. Yeah, two of mine on...
00:42:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Two of my all-time favorite movies are the same guy.
00:42:12
Kendahl
I have one that I did not include in this list, but I'm going to throw it out there. Inception. ah Yeah.
00:42:17
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that's when I didn't make my list because it was a little too long.
00:42:20
Kendahl
Yep.
00:42:21
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah, that's his too.
00:42:22
Kendahl
Yeah. It's no, yeah. Yeah. Christopher Nolan did a great job. I mean, that's, and that's kind of his thing, right?
00:42:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Genius.
00:42:28
Kendahl
He makes these really good thought provoking movies.
00:42:30
Julian Contreras Jr
The Batman series?
00:42:32
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:42:33
Julian Contreras Jr
I say the Batman series. There's a lot of Batman movies, but y'all know what I'm talking about.
00:42:36
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah. Dark Knight.
00:42:37
Julian Contreras Jr
The Christopher Nolan Batman series.
00:42:39
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:42:41
Julian Contreras Jr
So anyway, let's get right back into Fight Club. Let's duke it out here.
00:42:43
Kendahl
Okay. um Okay. So this is one of those movies. this Unfortunately, I got spoiled on this movie. Someone told me what happened, right? Someone told me, oh yeah, by the way, Brad Pitt is just his imaginary friend that he's made up for himself.
00:42:59
Kendahl
He is Tyler Durden. And I was like, what? Okay, whatever. And i let I let it go. i passed it off. And then I'm watching the movie and i was like,
00:43:08
Kendahl
Just add in the expletive right here. Four letter word. What? ive
00:43:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:43:13
Kendahl
and and then it may And then the rest of the movie, I was like, man. Oh, man.
00:43:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:43:19
Kendahl
Now know what's going on.
00:43:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:43:20
Kendahl
Right.
00:43:20
Julian Contreras Jr
You missed a ton.
00:43:22
Julian Contreras Jr
And by the way, that sounds like somebody that you just broke up with leaving the room and being like, oh, by the way, he is Tyler Durden.
00:43:22
Kendahl
Right.
00:43:29
Kendahl
right ah but that's how i felt and i was so mad i was so mad because i lost every little bit about what that movie was to be as a moviegoer right so but yeah i mean all the different scenes i like i was thinking about it the other night because i started watching it and it's like where he's where he's talking about splitting the movie the the movie right the splicing the different parts of porn into family movies he's like right there
00:43:29
Julian Contreras Jr
like, what?
00:43:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:43:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And then it happens in our movie.
00:43:57
Kendahl
ah
00:43:59
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah, this movie is great. Like we, 1999, rated r Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meatloaf, and Jared Leto.
00:44:09
Kendahl
What?
00:44:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Let's not forget that. Jared Leto is Pretty Boy.
00:44:12
Kendahl
Oh, that's funny. I didn't even think about that. I didn't even i didn't recognize that.
00:44:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. It might be the blonde hair instead of the ah long, black, Jesus-type hair.
00:44:18
Kendahl
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:44:21
Kendahl
Yeah. Maybe that's what threw it off.
00:44:23
Julian Contreras Jr
But that leads me to a funny story because I watched Fight Club many times.
00:44:23
Kendahl
But.
00:44:27
Julian Contreras Jr
right When it came out, it's out in the theater.
00:44:27
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:44:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Bought it on DVD probably.
00:44:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Went to my first concert when I was a senior in high school. So, 01-ish.
00:44:39
Kendahl
Okay.
00:44:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Went to Lincoln Park.
00:44:44
Julian Contreras Jr
And a little band called 30 Seconds to Mars was their opener.
00:44:50
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:44:51
Julian Contreras Jr
And there was supposed to be ah another band that I really like, Alien Ant Farm, but they their bus broke down and they didn't make it.
00:44:54
Kendahl
Oh.
00:44:56
Julian Contreras Jr
So it was, yeah.
00:44:57
Kendahl
I like them.
00:44:59
Julian Contreras Jr
30 Seconds to Mars did a little bit longer of a set. The entire time I'm looking at the singer, I'm like, where do I know this guy from? Did we go to school together at some point?
00:45:09
Kendahl
okay
00:45:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Is he on TV? I don't know. I could not pinpoint it for the longest time. Until later on in life when I found out when 30 Seconds to Mars is huge, that Jared Leto is a lead singer of that band.
00:45:24
Kendahl
No.
00:45:25
Julian Contreras Jr
And I was, you didn't know that?
00:45:27
Kendahl
No, I didn't know that.
00:45:28
Julian Contreras Jr
Right to this moment, Kendall, you're looking at me like this is just groundbreaking to you.
00:45:31
Kendahl
i Yeah, I didn't know that. I don't know. I really didn't know that. How did I not know that? That's funny.
00:45:38
Julian Contreras Jr
a I don't know, but that's that's a true story. 100% true from my life.
00:45:43
Kendahl
Oh, wow. I don't know why I didn't know that. That's funny.
00:45:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:45:47
Kendahl
Okay. Well, there we go.
00:45:48
Julian Contreras Jr
So the fact that I saw 30 Seconds to Mars way, way back, it had to have been one of their first tours.
00:45:55
Kendahl
Okay.
00:45:57
Julian Contreras Jr
I'll have to see when the band was formed and if it's anywhere close to 01, that's how many years it was. But it was cool to see him and feel like I recognized him from somewhere.
00:46:03
Kendahl
That's cool, though.
00:46:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Sure enough, it was Fight Club in 1999.
00:46:09
Kendahl
Wow. That's neat.
00:46:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Meatloaf does a great job in this.
00:46:13
Kendahl
Cool. Oh, yeah. Love it.
00:46:16
Julian Contreras Jr
His name was...
00:46:18
Kendahl
I can't say that on this show.
00:46:22
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't think it was... It's what Robert Paulson.
00:46:26
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Sorry.
00:46:27
Julian Contreras Jr
What?
00:46:28
Kendahl
Yeah. Because remember Robert Paulson? Didn't he call him? He called him something else.
00:46:32
Julian Contreras Jr
ah He might have, but I just remember that one scene, his name was Robert Paulson.
00:46:36
Kendahl
Robert Paulson. Yeah. And they're all like reciting it.
00:46:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:46:38
Kendahl
And then he's walking into a bar and they're all reciting it again.
00:46:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:46:42
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:46:43
Julian Contreras Jr
So, I... I can't believe somebody ruined that ending for you like that. So I too wish you could go back and see this for the first time.
00:46:49
Kendahl
Right.
00:46:52
Kendahl
I know. Yeah. It would have been nice. ah
00:46:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. All right. You're up. Your turn.
00:46:58
Kendahl
Okay.
00:46:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Number seven.
00:46:58
Kendahl
Um,

Unique Storytelling in 'Memento'

00:46:59
Kendahl
all right. So my, mine is the Christopher Nolan movie, uh, momento.
00:47:05
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, yes.
00:47:06
Kendahl
Yeah. The guy that can't remember anything. So he has to, he has to put a tattoo on himself and the movie it's crazy.
00:47:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep.
00:47:13
Kendahl
Cause you don't recognize that the movie's playing in back playing backwards. Like what? yeah That was, that was a crazy moment for me. i was like, hold on. Oh, wait, hold on.
00:47:22
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, this is this is a crazy spoiler.
00:47:23
Kendahl
And then you recognize everything's going in reverse.
00:47:26
Julian Contreras Jr
So, Memento isn't one of those huge movies like Fight Club.
00:47:31
Kendahl
No.
00:47:32
Julian Contreras Jr
it You had to have gone and seen it.
00:47:33
Kendahl
this is like This is Christopher Nolan's like very first like on this on the the big screen type thing. I mean, he might have had another one.
00:47:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:47:42
Kendahl
I'd have to look it up. But this was his this was his first really ah put him on the market for being a good movie type director.
00:47:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, so this is also my list. The year 2000, rated R, Sties, stars, Sties, Guy Pearce, and Carrie Ann Moss.
00:47:58
Kendahl
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:48:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Like Kendall said, it's crazy. Watching this movie from beginning to end, getting to that last part and then being like, what just happened?
00:48:11
Kendahl
What? Yeah.
00:48:13
Julian Contreras Jr
What?
00:48:13
Kendahl
Yeah. And 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, by the way. And it's well-deserved.
00:48:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, you almost, if you watched in the theater at that moment, you're like, all right, well, I know what I'm doing for the next two hours.
00:48:19
Kendahl
Well-deserved.
00:48:24
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm watching this movie again.
00:48:24
Kendahl
Right? Yeah. you You do. And if you rent this movie, I'm telling you guys, you got to make sure you have enough time if you're going watch it you because you're going to be like scratching your head going, no.
00:48:36
Kendahl
What? No.
00:48:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:48:37
Kendahl
What? What?
00:48:38
Julian Contreras Jr
So i got I got news for you. You don't have to rent it. It's on Peacock.
00:48:43
Kendahl
Is it really?
00:48:44
Julian Contreras Jr
I added it to my list. I was trying to get it in yesterday with the other three I watched.
00:48:46
Kendahl
oh okay. Yeah, I didn't get a chance to watch this one.
00:48:50
Julian Contreras Jr
But this is one I will watch tonight after we record and after wrestling.
00:48:53
Kendahl
Okay.
00:48:55
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah, Memento is on Peacock.
00:48:56
Kendahl
It's so good. And you know what's so funny?
00:48:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Please go watch it.
00:48:59
Kendahl
I have watched this. I've seen this movie three three times now. And I still go. And it still kind of. it it still messes with your brain that you. i don't want to say you forget. Because you don't forget.
00:49:10
Kendahl
But you still have to remember and orient yourself. That this movie is not playing in the normal fashion. You have to think about it differently.
00:49:17
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:49:18
Kendahl
So it's cool.
00:49:18
Julian Contreras Jr
And it is 25 years old.
00:49:20
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:49:21
Julian Contreras Jr
So I might have watched it for the maybe 18, 17 years ago was the last time I watched this movie.
00:49:28
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:49:28
Julian Contreras Jr
And that still seems like forever. That's a whole high schoolers life.
00:49:32
Kendahl
Right. mean, it's, it's, yeah, it's such a great movie.
00:49:33
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah.
00:49:35
Kendahl
Such a great movie. I would absolutely tell every single one of you, please take the time to watch it. Absolutely. Take the time to watch it because it's, it'll blow your mind.
00:49:45
Kendahl
If you've never seen it, I'm sorry. We just ruined it for you, but I don't feel like it does. i
00:49:49
Julian Contreras Jr
No, no, it's on the list. It's on the list. We gave forewarning.
00:49:52
Kendahl
well, but I'm saying, what I'm saying though, is that even in watching, because we didn't give the spoiler of what is happening.
00:49:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:49:59
Kendahl
Right, so i'm I'm leaving that part out um intentionally.
00:50:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:50:04
Kendahl
But know that there this movie does does not play in the normal fashion. You have to watch it again. and I promise you, you're going to watch it a second time.
00:50:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep. All right.
00:50:13
Kendahl
All right.
00:50:15
Julian Contreras Jr
This is going to take me to my my go right? Yeah, because you didn't want me
00:50:18
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:50:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, so that was on my list, so I'm going to skip down. This is another 1995 gem. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey's back.
00:50:30
Kendahl
and Okay.
00:50:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Do you know which one I'm talking about?
00:50:33
Kendahl
um Okay, so you've got Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman, and who else?
00:50:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Brad Pitt.
00:50:39
Kendahl
And Brad Pitt. Is this Meet Joe Black?
00:50:44
Julian Contreras Jr
for No, no, no.
00:50:46
Kendahl
I don't know. Wait, no, because I didn't have any of those. That's just Brad Pitt. ah
00:50:52
Julian Contreras Jr
This guy.
00:50:55
Kendahl
Who? I don't know. I don't know. What is it?
00:50:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Seven.
00:50:58
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. Oh, geez. Yeah.
00:50:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Seven. The most R-rated movie that could have come out that year, in my opinion. So much... It's not blood and gore. It's just the fact that they're showing you this stuff.
00:51:14
Julian Contreras Jr
And one of the scenes, they don't even show you what happened. They just have that guy tell you what happened.
00:51:19
Kendahl
Yeah. it well in it
00:51:20
Julian Contreras Jr
And they show you what the weapon was.
00:51:23
Kendahl
It's such a... It's a grizzly. Grizzly. There's a good word. Grizzly.
00:51:28
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, thank you. um But during my research, this is also David Fincher who did Fight Club.
00:51:35
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah. I will never forget the... the um the seven One of the seven deadly sins, Sloth. I'll never forget that scene when they walk in and...
00:51:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Sloth. Sloth. Which one is that?
00:51:51
Kendahl
It's the big guy.
00:51:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Isn't that Gluttony?
00:51:53
Kendahl
Or no, it's gluttony. That's gluttony.
00:51:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:51:55
Kendahl
Yeah, that one. That's the scene. Never forget that one.
00:51:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, that one that one's rough. Morgan Freeman does an amazing job in this. Brad Pitt, being Brad Pitt in 1995, did a fantastic job. I can't say enough.
00:52:10
Kendahl
No, yeah.
00:52:10
Julian Contreras Jr
The emotions. And then, of course, Kevin Spacey.
00:52:13
Kendahl
I mean, this is when Kevin Spacey was good and you didn't know a bunch of the stuff that he had done.
00:52:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, unfortunately, but.
00:52:19
Kendahl
But um but this is this is good. This is the b be be be. OK, another movie line be prepared.
00:52:29
Kendahl
You know what I'm saying?
00:52:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, there's a lot of stuff in this.
00:52:30
Kendahl
You got go going with with the opportunity to know you either need to be like alone or somebody that is definitely willing to stomach some interesting scenes.
00:52:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:52:44
Kendahl
So
00:52:45
Julian Contreras Jr
And I don't want to get too much of the ending. If you've missed this movie from 1995, I know we have a some younger viewers that this might not even be on their radar because it's so old. like
00:52:56
Kendahl
yeah.
00:52:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Like my son says, least I wasn't born in the 1900s.
00:53:00
Kendahl
Oh, okay.
00:53:00
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Cute dig, son. Cute dig.
00:53:06
Julian Contreras Jr
But Seven. It's going to get to the end and it's going to be insane to you.
00:53:08
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:11
Kendahl
It's going to mess you up just a little bit.
00:53:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:53:14
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:53:16
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:53:17
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:17
Julian Contreras Jr
I only have one more on my list. and don't know how many you have.
00:53:19
Kendahl
I just had i have my trilogy. I just had my one

Impact of 'The Lord of the Rings'

00:53:22
Kendahl
trilogy. um So I'll go into that real quick. It is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. um i I really, i'm a I like these kind of movies.
00:53:32
Kendahl
And they did kind of spawn the the the fantasy genre in um in the movies as a whole. Because up until this point, there really wasn't a lot of big fantasy-based movies that did well in the theaters.
00:53:49
Kendahl
They just always were kind of like, oh, that's the nerd film. They didn't make a lot of money. Oh, that's the, you know, that's, oh, that's those kind of movies. I don't want to watch that. these These truly brought fantasy to a light that people saw. Okay, these can actually be very interesting storylines that draw you in and have fun fight scenes and have you know interesting like characters. So the trilogy of Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, ah Return to the King, hands down, i think it's it's one of those that if I can go back and see them again in theaters, I would.
00:54:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. I have to admit that I was one of those guys when I was younger who didn't want to go see this movie because, like you said, i mean, I wasn't a bully and I wasn't a jock, but it wasn't the type of movie I watched.
00:54:38
Kendahl
Yeah, it wasn't my interest yet.
00:54:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:54:40
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:40
Julian Contreras Jr
But fun fact about me, I used to work at and arcade back when I was a lot younger, and we got tickets for the night before this came out.
00:54:50
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:51
Julian Contreras Jr
So my boss and the other employee that were with me were like, I mean, yeah, we'll go. They knew what it was. I didn't really.
00:54:58
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:59
Julian Contreras Jr
But after that, oh my goodness, I think I saw it four times in theaters. And then just going on, I just loved the entire series. And I wish I had read it when I was younger.
00:55:11
Kendahl
Yeah, I i mean, i I went and saw the theaters. I bought the books, came out. I never even waited till it came to DVD. I went, because this was right at that Blu-ray stage. I spent the extra money and bought the Blu-rays when they came out.
00:55:25
Kendahl
Then re-bought them in the in the box set. Then re-bought them when they went out in 4K. Yes, I did that. like That was me. I i did those, right? and so Yeah.
00:55:36
Kendahl
ah Anyway, so yeah, that's one of those I would definitely go back and watch again for the experience because it would be cool to see that for the first time again.
00:55:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, awesome. So this is going to take you to my last name. Last name. My last one. don't know why I'm messing up so much today, but stick with me. This is another Christopher Nolan, and I don't know if you've seen this or not.
00:55:59
Julian Contreras Jr
2006. It's only PG-13. I'm going to read who stars in this movie and see if you can guess.
00:56:01
Kendahl
Okay.
00:56:06
Kendahl
All right.
00:56:08
Julian Contreras Jr
Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson.
00:56:09
Kendahl
Okay. Okay. Scarlett Johansson.
00:56:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Like I said, you you may not have even seen this movie.
00:56:22
Kendahl
No, I can't think of it.
00:56:24
Julian Contreras Jr
The Prestige.
00:56:25
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, I forgot Scarlett Johansson played in that.
00:56:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:56:29
Kendahl
Yeah. No, no, this is great. This is The the Magician.
00:56:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, there's two movies that came out this same year that were battling magician movies.
00:56:34
Kendahl
Yeah. Right. Yeah.
00:56:39
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:56:40
Julian Contreras Jr
And I hang my hat on this one. I don't know if it's because who stars in it, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman. I feel like those are bigger names than that other magician movie.
00:56:48
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, and this one had that Christopher Nolan twist. That's what made it so good.
00:56:53
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. And i when we assigned this to ourselves, I immediately thought of this one.
00:56:59
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:57:00
Julian Contreras Jr
And I went and purchased it for $4.99, think, and watched it again.
00:57:04
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:57:05
Julian Contreras Jr
trying Trying to forget what I know.
00:57:08
Kendahl
Alright, sorry.
00:57:10
Julian Contreras Jr
But you can't. If you have this one ruined, that's why not a lot of people have seen this one, so I do not want to ruin it.
00:57:11
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:57:16
Julian Contreras Jr
I know we were going to spoiler heavy, but I feel like this one gives you worth a watch. Because if you know what happens at this,
00:57:20
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:57:25
Kendahl
When you find out how the magic is performed, how about we put it that way?
00:57:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:57:30
Kendahl
it It blows your mind.
00:57:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Look behind the curtain. Yeah.
00:57:33
Kendahl
Yep.
00:57:33
Julian Contreras Jr
It's crazy.
00:57:34
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:57:35
Julian Contreras Jr
And unfortunately, the second time watching it, I was less mesmerized because I knew came back to me what was going on.
00:57:40
Kendahl
Right.
00:57:43
Kendahl
I will tell you, I have never gone back and watched The Prestige since I watched it the first time. And not for the factor of not enjoying the movie. I enjoyed that movie. But because because it is one of those movies when you find out the end, it literally takes away from the the the the magic that was that movie.
00:58:01
Kendahl
ah Magic.
00:58:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. ah Look at you making dad puns over there. All right. By my account, that was 10 movies that we had.
00:58:13
Julian Contreras Jr
We had one together.
00:58:16
Julian Contreras Jr
so I'll make sure I get that list on there.
00:58:16
Kendahl
uh yep yep
00:58:20
Julian Contreras Jr
But cinema like this is what keeps you going back in hopes that the next one like this will blow your mind just as much.

Cinematic Twists Discussion

00:58:29
Julian Contreras Jr
It doesn't always happen like that. We know it's a world of trial and error.
00:58:35
Julian Contreras Jr
If a movie does amazing and you think the next one starring the same people will do the same, it just doesn't hit you as hard.
00:58:43
Kendahl
Well, I think there's... I think the hard part is is that the twist ending... um was rare up until like Fight Club. And then when, um and not Fight Club, Usual Suspects.
00:58:56
Kendahl
And then then you kind of had a few of them come out that were in that twist ending realm. um And then they kind of laid low for a while.
00:59:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:04
Kendahl
And I feel like they're trying to start coming back to that um in the fact of making it more, I don't know what you want to say, interesting.
00:59:15
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:59:15
Kendahl
um And i think i think one of the um I think one of the directors that's trying to do that again is Jordan Peele. um Because he had like um the movie Us, right?
00:59:25
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:59:28
Kendahl
um Them. I'm trying to think of some of the other ones that he's done.
00:59:33
Julian Contreras Jr
nope yeah that one's the first one i will say that when i did watch nope
00:59:33
Kendahl
ah Nope. Yeah. I mean, so he's he's definitely had a few of these. Oh, get out. I just I had to look that up. Get out when. Yeah. So, I mean, I think he's really trying to kind of bring that genre back into that twist, like severe twist at the end that does make you go, OK, I can't watch that again, knowing what happened, not because you didn't like it, but because it just takes everything away.
01:00:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Even when they figured it out on the screen, I still was like, wait, what did they see? What was I supposed to see there?
01:00:07
Kendahl
Yeah.
01:00:08
Julian Contreras Jr
And then they go and explain it like five minutes later and I'm like, oh my gosh, how did I miss that?
01:00:11
Kendahl
Yeah. Right. And there, there, that, I mean, I, we're not going into those as a newer movies, but um I think that's the thing though, is that you have, I think there's a reinvigoration of that twist genre that's starting to come back.
01:00:25
Kendahl
So because I mean, there's always the twist at like horror movies.
01:00:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
01:00:29
Kendahl
They've always had that part, but it was never like so severe you went, oh, my gosh, I didn't know that was a ah thing. um Whereas when you see a movie like Get Out or you see a movie like Nope, that twist is so heavy in what makes that movie special.
01:00:46
Kendahl
you know, stand out or what it makes it good, that it makes it difficult to watch it again, not because it's not good, but because now it's so hard to see the movie in the same interest.
01:00:49
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
01:00:56
Kendahl
Right.
01:00:57
Julian Contreras Jr
alright so I'm all for cinema with twists love it these are just some of our favorites there's definitely more out there that we haven't got to
01:00:58
Kendahl
So, but yeah.
01:01:09
Kendahl
um yeah. Yeah.
01:01:11
Julian Contreras Jr
But please feel free on the post for this show after you get to the end of this episode. Go back. Hit us with some comments on some we missed. Some that we might not even heard of.
01:01:23
Kendahl
Right. i mean, you know, what's so funny is when I was doing this list, as I started going, i i was trying to think of some of these movies. And um even just today at dinner, Memento is what came into my mind.
01:01:37
Kendahl
So, cause the first one was fight club. Like we had already talked about last week and then primal fear immediate claim to mind. And then I had like, you know, the, the other ones, matrix in game, those kinds of sat in there.
01:01:47
Kendahl
I thought about inception, but it was sitting down at dinner tonight. I'm like, what else? Like what else would be a movie that just blew my mind that I would love to watch again. And all of a sudden i was like, Oh crap. Uh, guy Pierce. What was that movie?
01:01:59
Kendahl
Yeah. And I, you know, and that was that moment I went, oh, my gosh, I totally forgot to, you know, to put this in there.
01:02:00
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah yeah
01:02:05
Kendahl
But I'm glad I did because it's such a such a great movie.
01:02:11
Julian Contreras Jr
so all right that's our list as always if you like our show share it with a friend like and subscribe i hate saying that but it it helps our channel it grows us
01:02:22

01:02:56
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah, there'll be some videos on there. But yeah, any more words of wisdom

Cinema as an Escape and Show's Essence

01:03:01
Julian Contreras Jr
for us, Mr. Kendall?
01:03:02
Kendahl
No, just just remember, the cinema experience is not all about what you like to do with other people. Sometimes it's just about you, just getting away, being able to shut off the world, especially in today's world. There's a lot going on.
01:03:17
Kendahl
It's a great way to just kind of forget about what's going on around you and take a minute to just enjoy and turn on something really good that makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you think, or maybe even makes you you know reflect.
01:03:31
Kendahl
And I think that's what this show is all about.
01:03:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Yep. Amen, brother. And until next time, what's in the box?
01:03:39
Kendahl
And remember, turn on something good.
