St. Patrick's Day Traditions and Personal Anecdotes

00:00:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, welcome in to another episode of Shut Off Turn On. This is a fantastic St. Patrick's Day. Hopefully everybody's got their green on or you'll get assaulted for no reason.
00:00:53
Kendahl
I, you know, what and I, as a teacher, i was, I was very much aware of the fact that I forgot to wear green today. Cause as you can see, this is what I wore. It's black.
00:01:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:01:04
Kendahl
Every, every kid reminded me that i forgot to wear green.
00:01:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Black is the new green.
00:01:09
Kendahl
its Yeah.

Episode Introduction and Personal Updates

00:01:10
Julian Contreras Jr
That's what you should have said.
00:01:10
Kendahl
No, no.
00:01:11
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:01:13
Kendahl
This
00:01:13
Julian Contreras Jr
On this holiday, I'm Julian, one of your hosts. And that guy over there is...
00:01:17
Kendahl
is Kendall. I'm over here on the East coast.
00:01:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes. And this is episode 57. And I absolutely love the number 57. I'm not sure why.
00:01:27
Kendahl
Okay.
00:01:27
Julian Contreras Jr
it was always my softball numbers. Any number that I create on Madden. Any sports game, I'm number 57. No, passenger 57.
00:01:34
Kendahl
It's like 57 Ronin.
00:01:34
Julian Contreras Jr
so ah no passenger fifty seven
00:01:38
Kendahl
Okay, there you go.

Family Life and Work Dynamics

00:01:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, great movie. Wesley Snipes.
00:01:42
Kendahl
Yep.
00:01:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Love it. But how we ah besides the St. Patrick's Day, how you been doing? It's been a rough week. We've both been super busy. It's got four or five days.
00:01:51
Kendahl
Ugh.
00:01:53
Julian Contreras Jr
I think you said you had kids home spring break.
00:01:56
Kendahl
I did. I had my two older ones home. Their spring break was you this this past week. um My spring break doesn't happen until April, so which is kind of rough. but um i mean it was It was a busy week. There's a lot of stuff going on on...
00:02:15
Kendahl
my work situation that I'm trying to kind of like

Recording Setup and Nostalgia for the 80s

00:02:20
Kendahl
work through. So it's, and then I started school again. um so I'm almost done.
00:02:26
Kendahl
um I've got just two more classes to finish and then I'll be smooth sailing. And I don't think I'll ever touch another book or school website ever again, unless somehow I required for my job.
00:02:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:02:41
Kendahl
So, um but yeah, I mean, so it was it was a bit of a rough week. um this This week's already kind of off to a bit of a rough start too. But i've I know.
00:02:51
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's only Monday.
00:02:54
Kendahl
hu So I will show you something. I want to show you something. So, um you know, for the most part, Julian and i we stay... relatively in our and our own zones when we record. So he has a studio, i have an office, um but every once in a while due to family dynamics, I get shoved to different corners of the house.
00:03:14
Kendahl
And um today I'm recording from my lovely bedroom, but i have I have something to show you because in this last week, I started putting together something for myself and I'll show you see if you can see it on camera.
00:03:30
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, they all fell down. But yeah, it's his ah baseball card collection.
00:03:32
Kendahl
Almost. Almost. can
00:03:36
Julian Contreras Jr
He's got a cool frame that he's saving.
00:03:38
Kendahl
Yeah, so it's ah it's a collector's um kind of shadow box-like setup. um And I've got all kinds of really cool ones in there. i ah I have cards in there from 86, 87, from 89, a couple of 90s, 91. Yeah.
00:03:54
Kendahl
ah one for eighty nine couple of ninety s ninety one um So yeah,

Growing Up in Small Towns and Cultural Reflections

00:04:00
Kendahl
it's pretty cool.
00:04:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, it's great foreshadowing too because ah this episode is, as you can see from the title, all about our generation.
00:04:01
Kendahl
So I'm going to...
00:04:08
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:10
Julian Contreras Jr
So...
00:04:10
Kendahl
And I you know i think um there's something to say about the 80s because we were kind of... i feel like we were in that generation that's in between generations.
00:04:21
Kendahl
um you know People call... Well, technically, if you were born from, i think it's like late 81 till I don't remember where the cutoff is, you're considered a millennial.
00:04:33
Kendahl
And i i just I don't consider myself a millennial. I've just never I never looked at myself as a millennial because I was born in the early 80s. We had ah we had the rotary phone at my grandmother's house until I was young. I mean, I remember using the rotary phone to call my mom and say, come pick me up from grandma's.
00:04:53
Kendahl
So, you know, and she had one of them.
00:04:55
Julian Contreras Jr
I think they call us cuspers.
00:04:56
Kendahl
What's that?
00:04:58
Julian Contreras Jr
We're on that cusp.
00:05:01
Kendahl
Yeah, yeah. Like we were right there at that generation where like I had a black and white TV, um but I also had a Nintendo. And by the time I was in school, we were using computers, but they were rare.
00:05:14
Kendahl
And then by the time I was in high school, we had the Internet, but it was weird.
00:05:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Yeah.

Cartoons Then and Now: A Generational Contrast

00:05:21
Kendahl
And, you know, and then in college, I was still we were still writing papers, you know, like we had to turn in written papers, not typed papers. And then it got to the point where.
00:05:33
Kendahl
um You know, it just i don't know, I think it's I think we were kind of in that weird generation where we we had all these weird transitions from one thing to the next.
00:05:42
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:05:42
Kendahl
I still remember writing on a typewriter.
00:05:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes. And then when we first had computer classes, it was like, why are we going to take this class?
00:05:47
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:05:52
Kendahl
yeah
00:05:52
Julian Contreras Jr
and
00:05:53
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:05:54
Julian Contreras Jr
But it's helped us out quite a bit. But I love the 80s. It was so much fun.
00:05:59
Kendahl
Well, I think we we were also a little more adventurous because we just didn't have the restrictions of the know-with-all that would become like, why can't I ride my bike down to the pizza joint two and a half miles away and use my my my weekend money that I earn from chores?
00:06:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:06:18
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:06:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah,

Social Gatherings and Personal Celebrations

00:06:20
Julian Contreras Jr
and I grew up in such a small town. Honestly, if you rode your boat bike any direction of mile, you were either outside of town and we had like this little lake beach.
00:06:30
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:06:33
Kendahl
Okay.
00:06:33
Julian Contreras Jr
was kind of weird you could ride down to. But then we got an arcade and that was amazing.
00:06:39
Kendahl
was Was this a little town that that I ended up like randomly showing up at one time and then all of a sudden we're like, oh yeah, by the way, I'm from there.
00:06:39
Julian Contreras Jr
It was...
00:06:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, one stoplight.
00:06:49
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:06:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:06:50
Kendahl
Okay. So side note, here's a little insight to Julian and i So um we hadn't known each other yet. This is early two thousands. And um I ended up a friend of mine who was graduating from the high school in this little town calls me up and says, Hey, can I, can you come show up at my graduation and, you know, being good friends of mine? I was like, yeah, sure. Why not?
00:07:14
Kendahl
So I drive and go see her I show up at her graduation and then, geez, don't know, 10 years later, i end up meeting Julian.
00:07:27
Kendahl
We're talking and he's like, oh yeah, I'm from that town. i was like, wait, what?
00:07:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:07:31
Kendahl
He's like, yeah.
00:07:31
Julian Contreras Jr
I mean, we're we're saying the town like it's something secret. No, it's shout out Aberdeen, Idaho.
00:07:34
Kendahl
No. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Any listeners there?
00:07:37
Kendahl
Well, didn't know if we wanted to be like disclosure of everything here.
00:07:38
Julian Contreras Jr
Ah,

Entertainment Highlights and Series Recommendations

00:07:40
Kendahl
So yeah.
00:07:40
Julian Contreras Jr
it doesn't.
00:07:41
Julian Contreras Jr
I don't think it matters. Anybody that's listening, if you want to go to Aberdeen, Idaho, I think maybe they've gotten one more stoplight.
00:07:48
Kendahl
that's true.
00:07:48
Julian Contreras Jr
But...
00:07:48
Kendahl
Hey, tidbit about Aberdeen, Idaho. There are more bars per capita than there are churches.
00:07:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, there's only one church there, and I think two or three bars.
00:07:56
Kendahl
Yeah. Yep.
00:07:58
Julian Contreras Jr
But... I remember going to the bowling alley and the barber shop was in the bowling alley.
00:08:02
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:08:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, the arcade was...
00:08:04
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:08:04
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, they the special bowling alley arcade was there. But then we actually got a real arcade across the street that you could go in and do all the quarters.
00:08:12
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:08:13
Julian Contreras Jr
They had all the cool games. I remember playing X-Men for a ton.
00:08:16
Kendahl
yeah Oh, geez. Yeah, talking about this as early 90s. But yeah, so I mean, Julia and I, we had we had connections before we even knew each other. It's pretty crazy.
00:08:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:08:27
Kendahl
So.
00:08:27
Julian Contreras Jr
And I didn't go to school there very long because we just moved back back and forth from Utah to Idaho during that time.
00:08:36
Kendahl
hmm.
00:08:37
Julian Contreras Jr
But I remember like K through fifth grade or 4th grade was in one building. And then after 5th grade, you moved to the big building, which was high school.
00:08:50
Kendahl
hmm. Yeah.
00:08:51
Julian Contreras Jr
I can't imagine that being the case anywhere any anymore.
00:08:56
Kendahl
all Right.
00:08:57
Julian Contreras Jr
You have to have that transition school.
00:08:58
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:08:59
Julian Contreras Jr
i can't imagine

Movie Plans and Reviews

00:09:00
Julian Contreras Jr
starting high school with lockers and stuff at fifth grade.
00:09:04
Kendahl
um But man, that place football was everything.
00:09:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, yeah.
00:09:08
Kendahl
Football was everything in that town. That's the one thing I do remember when I got there.
00:09:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, really good football field with the track around it.
00:09:13
Kendahl
So.
00:09:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:09:15
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:09:16
Julian Contreras Jr
So a lot of fun.
00:09:16
Kendahl
So, I mean, there's all kinds of all kinds of crazy stuff. But anyway, so, ah yeah. um So, I mean, there's that. I don't know how we went from baseball cards to Aberdeen, Idaho, but the kid that connections real.
00:09:28
Julian Contreras Jr
ah We just started talking about the 80s and cusping and yeah.
00:09:35
Kendahl
um No, so but it's funny because i so in my in my field, I'm, you know, one, I'm rare and being a guy. um But two, it's interesting because in the school that I work at, most of the women.
00:09:50
Kendahl
are so much younger than I am. And it's so funny because we'll be talking and I remember having a conversation not very long ago and I was, we were talking about and shows as a kid that we liked things that were, you know, we remember. And I was like, yeah, um I mean, I watched cartoons on Saturdays and she's like, oh yeah, I love so Saturday cartoons.
00:10:08
Kendahl
And she started of talking about her cartoons. And I was like, so those are the cartoons I showed my daughter. Um, so no, that's not relatable to me.
00:10:21
Kendahl
Cause like cartoons for me when I was a kid was like Flintstones, you know, cause they were still doing reruns on Saturdays.
00:10:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, the Hanna-Barbera.
00:10:29
Kendahl
Right.
00:10:29
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:10:30
Kendahl
So, um, like it's just, and, and Looney tunes, right. Or and trying to think of some of the other Saturday night or Saturday morning cartoons that we're playing, but, um, the relatability really fell off fast.
00:10:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Like old timer over here talking about old cartoons.
00:10:46
Kendahl
Oh my gosh. Yeah. No, I it wasn't around when they were making those, but our Saturday night morning cartoon, our Saturday morning cartoons were a lot of reruns of those like, um, you know, 50, 60, 70s era, like Hanna-Barbera type shows.
00:11:01
Kendahl
But anyway, all right.
00:11:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Exactly. I still remember when Stay by the Bell moved to Saturday.
00:11:03
Kendahl
How about you?
00:11:05
Julian Contreras Jr
That was the best.
00:11:07
Kendahl
Oh, dude, I love Saved by the Bell. was, that was really good. That's one of those shows. Yeah.
00:11:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Future episode for sure. Gotta talk about the bell.
00:11:15
Kendahl
Right. ah Like going down the realm. Did you ever watch the the made for TV movie about Saved by the Bell?
00:11:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Like a docu-movie?
00:11:27
Kendahl
Yeah, basically.
00:11:29
Julian Contreras Jr
I might have once I start doing research if we do an episode like that I will probably come across it and either watch it or have watched it. Yeah.
00:11:38
Kendahl
OK. ah

Exploring 80s Movies and Their Impact

00:11:40
Kendahl
Well, anyway, um yeah, we'll get there. We'll get there. OK, so what about you? How was your week?
00:11:45
Julian Contreras Jr
It was a busy week. I had work all the way up there. It's nice to be back to work. Shoulders doing okay. Actually got to have a boys night.
00:11:56
Kendahl
Oh, good.
00:11:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I love that my wife supports that. And I don't go out every Saturday. think the last time we had one was maybe three or four months ago. And so we finally got to get that arranged and we went out.
00:12:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, we didn't go out. We went to somebody's house and we just hung out, played card games, drank some beverages, you know, typical stuff.
00:12:16
Kendahl
Nice. Nice. That's good, though.
00:12:19
Julian Contreras Jr
I think, yeah, that's what exactly what my wife said.
00:12:19
Kendahl
You need those. so
00:12:22
Julian Contreras Jr
She's like, you need ah release, you know, like stress-free, emotional, like be able to say what you want to say without offending anyone. So it was really good time.
00:12:35
Kendahl
Good. Yeah.
00:12:37
Julian Contreras Jr
So I had that. And then we had an impromptu birthday party for my sister, Kayla.
00:12:43
Kendahl
Happy birthday, Kayla.
00:12:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes, she denies getting any older. She's getting closer to 40. She hates it.
00:12:51
Kendahl
It's okay. It gets harder to accept the the the four being the first digit within the number of your age.
00:12:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And on that note, we were talking about birthdays and somehow my brother hasn't aged in the last two years, apparently. he He's sticking to the number that he's at right now.
00:13:10
Kendahl
Okay.
00:13:10
Julian Contreras Jr
And he refuses to believe he's going any older. But good for him.
00:13:17
Kendahl
It's not about it's about not about the number, it's how you feel, right?
00:13:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And then other than those two things, I watched a Netflix show that's new.
00:13:27
Kendahl
Okay.
00:13:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Binged that entire series.
00:13:27
Kendahl
All right.
00:13:28
Julian Contreras Jr
It was really good.
00:13:32
Julian Contreras Jr
I'll just go into it. Might as well.
00:13:33
Kendahl
Yeah, go.
00:13:35
Julian Contreras Jr
It was the new Running Point with Kate Hudson.
00:13:37
Kendahl
Okay. So, so you texted this to me and I i guess I missed the text. and then I went back and looked last night when I was going to text you something else. i was like running point. So I looked it up and anyway, so how was it?
00:13:51
Julian Contreras Jr
It was really good. I liked it a lot. There was a lot. it's a Mindy Kaling. She, it's her idea, i think.
00:13:55
Kendahl
Okay.
00:13:58
Kendahl
Okay.
00:13:59
Julian Contreras Jr
I think she ah wrote and directed the first couple episodes. Then you can gradually see other directors and writers in there.
00:14:07
Kendahl
Okay.
00:14:07
Julian Contreras Jr
But I liked it a lot. Kate Hudson does a great job as the character she's in. It's basically about the NBA without being called the NBA. And the team is the LA Waves.
00:14:16
Kendahl
Okay. All right.
00:14:19
Julian Contreras Jr
So, I mean, that's not a far stretch from the L.A. Lakers.
00:14:22
Kendahl
Right.
00:14:24
Julian Contreras Jr
The color schemes are completely different, but it's about her taking over the franchise as president because her older brother, it's a family-run business, he has a little bit of an issue that you'll find in the show.
00:14:37
Julian Contreras Jr
So he names her president of the team. And then as the series goes on, you kind of find out why he named her that.
00:14:46
Kendahl
and Okay.
00:14:46
Julian Contreras Jr
But it's really good. I liked it a lot. It's TVMA. It's mature audiences only. wouldn't watch it with your kids.
00:14:55
Julian Contreras Jr
But really fun. I liked it a lot. And it at the very end, it does say that it is renewed for another season because of the way it ended.
00:14:55
Kendahl
Okay.
00:15:02
Kendahl
Oh, wow.
00:15:04
Julian Contreras Jr
And I think the numbers it generated in the first weekend.
00:15:07
Kendahl
Okay. That's cool.
00:15:09
Julian Contreras Jr
So yeah, definitely check out Running Point. I liked it quite a bit.
00:15:13
Kendahl
Nice. um Did you see any movies?
00:15:18
Julian Contreras Jr
No, I was going to try to go see Novocaine. Did not make it to the theater with everything that was planned and had ah had to clean the house eventually, you know.
00:15:21
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:15:28
Julian Contreras Jr
So did that for most of one day.
00:15:28
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:15:31
Kendahl
we had We had planned on going to see Black Bag and had it all set up, ready to go. and then my kids being in town, we thought they were going to leave earlier on Saturday because we were actually going to try to record on Saturday.
00:15:42
Kendahl
And um my kids ended up just staying until like seven o'clock. And finally I was like, boot to the boot, just get out.
00:15:49
Julian Contreras Jr
Go back to school.
00:15:51
Kendahl
Like, I love you, but you got to go. So, but... um
00:15:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I actually have a note written down here that I do have to get back to the theater so I can have more content for y'all.
00:16:04
Julian Contreras Jr
I love...
00:16:04
Kendahl
I feel like I haven't...
00:16:05
Kendahl
Yeah, I feel like I haven't been to the theater in a long time myself.
00:16:10
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I gotta hit those secret movies and just get back to see all the new releases. I also want to see Black Bag because it's getting really, really good reviews.
00:16:17
Kendahl
Right? Yeah.
00:16:20
Julian Contreras Jr
So, I mean, that's a hope and a prayer that it will get solved.
00:16:20
Kendahl
So... um
00:16:24
Julian Contreras Jr
I just need to make the time.
00:16:26
Kendahl
So I did see two movies over the last week. um Not so much new. One of them is newer. It's very brand new to streaming. Moana 2. um
00:16:36
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:16:37
Kendahl
Okay, so have you did you ever watch it?
00:16:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Funny you bring that up. My brother actually turned it on for the kids at the party, and I could hear some of it. And we were having an open conversation.
00:16:46
Kendahl
I'm sorry.
00:16:49
Kendahl
Okay.
00:16:49
Julian Contreras Jr
And my brother and his wife said, it's not as good as the first, which is what I've heard a ton.
00:16:55
Kendahl
Yep.
00:16:56
Julian Contreras Jr
And then I explained to him that it was supposed to be a series just for Disney Plus. But they decided to turn it into a movie real fast.
00:17:06
Kendahl
Kind of. I'm here's what I'm gonna say. So is it as bad as critics said? No. But on that same caveat, I can see why people got frustrated with this movie in theaters, because there were times even the character in the show, there's the, they start singing and you're like, what? There's another song. They just finished a freaking song.
00:17:34
Kendahl
It's not even been 30 seconds. What, what's going on? And one of the characters in, at that moment, when I said that to myself, one of the characters says, what we're singing, why? So it they knew what they were doing when they made this film.
00:17:50
Kendahl
There's definitely too much of those like introduction to song. And you're like, come on, like, just give us a fun dialogue, create something else, like do something a little more entertaining, not singing because the song, right.
00:18:03
Kendahl
For the the, whoever did the songwriting for this, it did not do a very good job. It was pretty bad.
00:18:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:18:09
Kendahl
um
00:18:09
Julian Contreras Jr
The first movie, you know who wrote all that music, right?
00:18:11
Kendahl
Yeah, it's Lin-Manuel Miranda.
00:18:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. So if you get that name to write all your songs or most of the songs, I'll say, i don't know if it's all, so I'm not going to put my name on that quote, but that man is a genius at writing songs.
00:18:15
Kendahl
Yeah,
00:18:26
Kendahl
yeah I mean, some of the greatest Disney songs ever have been from him. i mean, bru we don't talk about Bruno.
00:18:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Right.
00:18:35
Kendahl
Come on. Exactly. so exactly You're welcome.
00:18:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Now yeah everybody's going to have that earworm. They're going to thank you.
00:18:40
Kendahl
welcome.
00:18:41
Julian Contreras Jr
geez.
00:18:41
Kendahl
So, um but no, I mean, the thing is, is as, as I started watching this, he, I could see where they fell off on it. So anyway, it's a good movie. Watch it with your kids. You'll enjoy it. Just know the music's kind of off and on good. this There are a couple of songs that are really good, but yeah, there's, there's a lot of missed notes in this, this movie.
00:19:03
Kendahl
um All right. And so the second one I watched was a Spy with Melissa McCarthy. um
00:19:10
Julian Contreras Jr
You've never seen that one before?
00:19:11
Kendahl
I had never seen it before.
00:19:12
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:19:13
Kendahl
And so um i there's two things I'll say about it. I think it's a good movie to watch. It's fun. It's funny. It has a lot of good humor in it. um it's you know It's fun to watch because it's got some action fun elements thing. I said fun like eight times there. so
00:19:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:19:27
Kendahl
ah But um it there's so many times they throw the F-bomb down and I'm like... Just calm it down a little bit.
00:19:38
Kendahl
Come on. Especially when ah Jason Statham comes in. Good gravy. It's like, okay, let's just use that as ah as a, you know, random connection between two words.
00:19:52
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:19:52
Kendahl
So, but it's good.
00:19:53
Julian Contreras Jr
I think I saw that one way back when it first came out to Blu-ray. I might have even purchased it. I can't remember.
00:19:59
Kendahl
Okay. Okay.
00:20:01
Julian Contreras Jr
i haven't watched it too much. Maybe one or two times max.
00:20:04
Kendahl
Yeah, I mean, it's good. I liked it. It was fun. um And then, i and I know your answer to this, but you have still not watched Invincible.
00:20:12
Julian Contreras Jr
I have not. I mean, there binging 10 episodes of Running Point back-to-back, granted they're only 30 to 40 minutes, that still took up about 5 hours my Sunday.
00:20:23
Julian Contreras Jr
so
00:20:23
Kendahl
Sure.
00:20:25
Kendahl
Well, I'll tell you. So we have discussed this. So three is okay. Four is better than three episode. um Five is pretty good.
00:20:38
Kendahl
Six is crazy. um
00:20:42
Julian Contreras Jr
And that's the end, right? Six is the season finale.
00:20:44
Kendahl
No, no, there's two more episodes. Nope. There's seven then there's eight.
00:20:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, swear I got an email that said it was over.
00:20:47
Kendahl
So,
00:20:50
Kendahl
and Well, it might be over, but there's seven and eight on there. I'm watching i'm watching seven right now.
00:20:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:20:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Of
00:20:55
Kendahl
um
00:20:56
Kendahl
So ah they introduced a new character in six. um That's pretty, yeah, it's Aaron Paul, my high school buddy.
00:21:02
Julian Contreras Jr
course they do.
00:21:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Backstory on that, because I know people are going to question whether he has actually buddies with Aaron Paul. ah I want to say the short answer is no.
00:21:19
Kendahl
Yeah, I'm not buddies with him, but I do know him.
00:21:19
Julian Contreras Jr
But right he
00:21:22
Kendahl
I did know him. ah
00:21:25
Julian Contreras Jr
he sent me a picture when he told me that he knows Aaron Paul. And i was like, pick or it didn't happen. And he he sends me the picture of his yearbook. And sure enough, he did go to school with Aaron Paul. I don't think they were in the same grade.
00:21:40
Kendahl
No, we were a grade separated.
00:21:42
Julian Contreras Jr
But yes, he did go to school with Aaron Paul. So, yes.
00:21:46
Kendahl
So the short story on that is I have a friend that was a mutual friend of Aaron Paul. ah She invites him to the birthday party. He shows up. This is long before he was, you know, Aaron Paul. He had, I can't remember his last name then.
00:22:00
Kendahl
And um we're, we're at the same birthday party. We hang out, we talk, we, you know,
00:22:06
Julian Contreras Jr
Cook Crystal Meth.
00:22:06
Kendahl
get to know each other in mutual friend format. Right.
00:22:08
Julian Contreras Jr
it
00:22:09
Kendahl
um So um he throws down a few science. No, just kidding. So he, you know we, so we know each other in that sense.
00:22:21
Kendahl
We got, you know, we kind of ran into other, ran into each other a couple more times in the hall Really just like mutual friend situation, but we did know each other. And um then, you know, years go on. I'm watching Breaking Bad and I'm like, I know this dude.
00:22:38
Kendahl
How do I know this dude? And so I, um I, at the time I'm on Facebook and I, I email a couple of my friends. i was like, Hey, did we go to, to school with this guy? Cause I feel like I knew him in high school.
00:22:51
Kendahl
And my friend Erin at the time, she texts back or emails back and or on Facebook, whatever messenger, whatever it was back in 2000. two thousand And I've yeah, I don't know.
00:22:58
Julian Contreras Jr
AOL.
00:23:00
Kendahl
She says she says back, she's like, yeah, that's Erin. um You probably remember him from ah hanging out with friends a couple of times. i was like, what? And she goes, yeah, I was good friends with him in high school.
00:23:11
Kendahl
Um, the first time I think you guys met was at my birthday party, blah, blah, blah, blah. blah And i was like, oh, that's right. So that's my connection to him. It's not like not we're not buddies, but I do. I did know him at one point anyway. Um, so he comes into season, uh, into the season, uh, episode six.
00:23:30
Kendahl
plays a really interesting character, challenges everything um that kind of has been invincible, taking away from that connection to the to some of the people.
00:23:43
Kendahl
So um anyhow, point is, de I like it. ah Six was really great. I think Six cemented the fact, that okay, I like this season.
00:23:55
Kendahl
um Something that happens. I'm not going to tell you what happens.
00:23:58
Julian Contreras Jr
That's fine.
00:23:58
Julian Contreras Jr
I got to earn it.
00:23:58
Kendahl
it's
00:23:59
Kendahl
It's good.
00:23:59
Julian Contreras Jr
I got to watch it.
00:24:00
Kendahl
It's good. you got yeah You'll like it. So, yeah. um I say we dive into our topic.
00:24:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, we're already 24 minutes in and I can't imagine pushing this out any farther.
00:24:11
Kendahl
I know. We've been talking for a while.
00:24:13
Julian Contreras Jr
I got somebody on motorcycle outside this thing.
00:24:14
Kendahl
I'm sorry.
00:24:17
Julian Contreras Jr
i don't know if you pick up on that.
00:24:17
Kendahl
I did hear that.
00:24:18
Kendahl
ah
00:24:18
Julian Contreras Jr
It's like right outside the window.
00:24:21
Kendahl
So, but, um yeah. So, let's let's dive into this into this topic. We are talking about 80s movies today.
00:24:27
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. And going in, I did have some concerns. I was really excited about this topic, but then as I go through the list of all the eighties movies that I know because I'm old, um, it's, it's too much.
00:24:42
Julian Contreras Jr
Like, i it got to like 20 movies I was like, I can't break down 20 movies in a half an hour or less.
00:24:42
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:24:47
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:49
Julian Contreras Jr
So, plus, if if I did, if we do an episode later on that content, it'll be like kind of a a rerun for all the ticket holders. So I don't want to do that to you. I don't want to like, well, you guys just talked about this movie three episodes ago.
00:25:04
Kendahl
Well, and I feel like there's some of these up some of these movies that, okay, so that we could include in this list, we've already talked about. Like several times.
00:25:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. so and I'll i try not to.
00:25:13
Kendahl
So.
00:25:15
Julian Contreras Jr
i went a little bit more obscure. There are two heavy hitters because I cannot get out of the 80s without mentioning these movies. They're just so iconic and so memorable and to who we are and what made us.
00:25:28
Julian Contreras Jr
Because believe it or not, in our generation, this is what we had. We didn't have the internet to look to for idols or content or to research who's doing what.
00:25:34
Kendahl
Right.
00:25:39
Julian Contreras Jr
We had these movies that we watched over and over again, Be Kind, Rewind, and we based our personality off of what we saw here.
00:25:44
Kendahl
Yeah, these characters. have Right?
00:25:50
Kendahl
And we if we rented it for a fourth time, we got the fifth one free.
00:25:54
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, a punch card. Or if you didn't return it, then you just bought the movie for $80, because I think that's when they finally sent you to collections.
00:26:00
Kendahl
no
00:26:04
Kendahl
So I made my list in the fact that i took I took off the heavy hitters because I didn't want to go through the obvious. I do have a couple of, I wouldn't say popular, quote unquote popular movies on here, but the majority of my movies are ones that I feel like people either pass over or don't talk about very much, but are still favorites of mine.
00:26:25
Julian Contreras Jr
Right. And on that note, I'm going to jump right in. I want to take the lead on this one. Cause I told you I was going to start with a big one. And that big one is of course, Top Gun, Tom Cruise.
00:26:35
Kendahl
Yeah, I knew that was going to be on here.
00:26:37
Julian Contreras Jr
i mean, it has to be one of those pilots is you.
00:26:40
Kendahl
ah
00:26:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Like if you're an old, like us, one of those guys, you modeled your personality after at least for one year of school. Whether it be Maverick, whether it be Goose, whether it be Iceman, who was a total jerk, but amazing.
00:26:52
Kendahl
Right.
00:27:00
Kendahl
Well, and the thing is, is the just the sound design of this movie was so crazy. And um I remember I was I was actually talking to I'm trying to remember who I was talking to in the fact that it's so iconic.
00:27:20
Kendahl
There's there's nothing you can do. to to quite literally match the the sound when you first heard those bells ringing as this as the movie was starting, there is literally nothing you can compare it to. like that um You know what I'm talking about, that intro sound from from Top Gun.
00:27:37
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, course.
00:27:39
Kendahl
There's nothing you can compare that to. I was trying to find the soundbite that I had for this, but youre yeah, it's just that's what it is. So I did not include that on my list because of that reason.
00:27:48
Julian Contreras Jr
What was it
00:27:50
Kendahl
So...
00:27:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Slider. You stink. Was it that one?
00:27:54
Kendahl
ah No, i had I had the intro bells because I wanted to be like, you know, you can't even deny what that is.
00:27:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:28:00
Kendahl
It doesn't matter who you are.
00:28:01
Julian Contreras Jr
To this day, you could go on a road trip and Spotify the Top Gun soundtrack and your next, I don't know, 40, 45 minutes is ah blur because you're just going to be in memory heaven.
00:28:02
Kendahl
You know what it is.
00:28:15
Kendahl
yeah Right. Right.
00:28:17
Julian Contreras Jr
You're going to know exactly what scene is playing when this song is on. It's so great. I mean, I'm going to go through some of these people that are in this movie. Of course, i've already said Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis was great.
00:28:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards did the greatest sidekick role, if you want to call it that, as Goose.
00:28:41
Kendahl
yeah
00:28:42
Julian Contreras Jr
And when he... when Okay, sorry. It's been 30-something years. If you don't know that Goose dies, I'm sorry, but
00:28:50
Kendahl
yeah
00:28:53
Julian Contreras Jr
But that makes the movie. When they eject out of that thing and you see Goose hit the shield.
00:28:58
Kendahl
yeah
00:28:59
Julian Contreras Jr
And it's like, oh my gosh. the I can just see the green smoke as they're going down to get picked up. So good.
00:29:10
Kendahl
Yeah. It's one of those movies you just can't forget. It's the reason why when they made the second one, a lot of people were really nervous, but it lived up to everything it could have been and more.
00:29:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:29:20
Julian Contreras Jr
Thank goodness.
00:29:22
Kendahl
Right?
00:29:23
Julian Contreras Jr
I mean, I love Top Gun Maverick, and I think it is because I enjoy Top Gun so much. I don't even know how many times I've seen it.
00:29:32
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:29:32
Julian Contreras Jr
it's I've lost count. And the fact that, I don't remember when it was, either I was engaged or we had just gotten married and found out that she had never seen Top Gun.
00:29:44
Julian Contreras Jr
It was that night ah we put it on.
00:29:45
Kendahl
Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:47
Julian Contreras Jr
And, of course, it didn't live up to the hype for her that I put on it.
00:29:47
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:29:53
Kendahl
yeah
00:29:54
Julian Contreras Jr
I feel like that's going to be a problem with a lot of stuff. If you grew up with it, watched it umpteen times, and you find somebody that is barely watching it now in 2015 until now, it's not going to be as cool.
00:30:08
Kendahl
Yeah. Well, all right. Uh, I'm going to move us along.
00:30:14
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:30:14
Kendahl
My mind is going to be on the opposite spectrum of coolness.
00:30:19
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:30:19
Kendahl
Weird science.
00:30:21
Julian Contreras Jr
right, that is on my list too. Thank you.
00:30:23
Kendahl
Oh, it is awesome.
00:30:23
Julian Contreras Jr
Now we don't have to double up. Yeah, absolutely love Weird Science.
00:30:25
Kendahl
Um, 1985, 60% on Rotten Tomatoes was kind of funny. um But this movie is about two guys write a computer program to make a girlfriend and then she comes alive.
00:30:39
Kendahl
And the antics that follow are just absolutely crazy. This is like the most perfection of 80s chaos in just buffoonery.
00:30:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:30:52
Julian Contreras Jr
right there'll be like 15 scenes if you watch this on tv that are going to be edited because it it was the 80s and we just had more free reign on stuff like that but don't gloss over the fact that their girlfriend that the computer program made if you can wrap your head around that she also came with genie-like powers
00:30:52
Kendahl
We'll call it that.
00:30:58
Kendahl
Oh, geez.
00:31:03
Kendahl
Mm hmm. Yeah, it's.
00:31:14
Kendahl
Right. She can do anything she wanted.
00:31:17
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, and they weren't wishes. She could just do it. She just asked them what they wanted and she'd just do it.
00:31:23
Kendahl
Yeah, totally. I mean, it's, yeah, it is the absolute epitome of 80s weirdness and coolness and fun.
00:31:33
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I can't skip over it because it's going to come around again. But Anthony Michael Hall in the eighty s
00:31:38
Kendahl
Oh, yeah. The Rat Pack. Yeah.
00:31:41
Julian Contreras Jr
Great. I believe the other guy was Ian Mitchell Smith.
00:31:44
Kendahl
The Brat Brat Pack.
00:31:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. i Of course, Kelly LeBrock has...
00:31:50
Kendahl
Mm. Mm.
00:31:51
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And then the brother, Bill Paxton.
00:31:54
Kendahl
yeah
00:31:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Just so mean.
00:31:58
Kendahl
yeah
00:31:59
Julian Contreras Jr
Like, you get bullied by your brother and sister, but Bill Paxton in this movie was absolutely torturing his little brother.
00:32:07
Kendahl
I will admit, I do not have another Brat Pack member on my list.
00:32:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, well, I have the same one, but it's in a different movie.
00:32:15
Kendahl
Okay. Okay. as you want to Do you want to go to that one?
00:32:18
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I'll just go right to that one.
00:32:19
Kendahl
Is it 16 Candles?
00:32:19
Julian Contreras Jr
I'll go off. ah
00:32:20
Kendahl
Oh. Yeah.
00:32:22
Julian Contreras Jr
It is not 16 Candles. that However, it is, I think, one of my brother's favorites because of another person that's in this movie that I like who he is a huge fan of.
00:32:23
Kendahl
oh
00:32:26
Kendahl
yeah
00:32:34
Julian Contreras Jr
1985, same year, rated The Breakfast Club.
00:32:39
Kendahl
Yeah. This was one of the, my wife had never seen this and I was like, what? She's like, yeah, it was rated R. I never watched it. i was like, ah okay, we're watching this. So we sat down and watched it and she loves it.
00:32:52
Kendahl
Loved it.
00:32:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. Of course, we're talking about Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald is the actor that I'm talking about, Ali Sheedy, and of course, Anthony Michael Hall.
00:33:06
Kendahl
Yeah, that was, this is the Brat Pack movie.
00:33:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, this is five different characters that you all went to school with that meet up on a Saturday for detention, which I don't even know if a thing that. I don't know. Is that a thing?
00:33:21
Julian Contreras Jr
Detention?
00:33:21
Kendahl
It was.
00:33:22
Kendahl
anymore.
00:33:23
Julian Contreras Jr
No, they just send you home. Okay, whatever.
00:33:25
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:33:26
Julian Contreras Jr
But you had to spend a Saturday at the school.
00:33:29
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:33:30
Julian Contreras Jr
And these five characters got together and realized that their lives are so different. But they're not.
00:33:37
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:33:38
Julian Contreras Jr
They're all going through about the same stuff in just a slightly different way. And don't shut anybody out in your life just because you think you won't get along.
00:33:49
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:33:50
Julian Contreras Jr
this movie's great yeah and it's got some iconic scenes uh mess with the bull get the horns which has been talked about forever and i think back when we were maybe in high school this was on tbs like every weekend for some reason it was two and a half hours on tv but i gotta get those commercials in and then of course if we can't move on
00:33:51
Kendahl
Especially for those hidden talents.
00:33:56
Kendahl
Oh, yeah.
00:34:00
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:34:09
Kendahl
Oh, yeah, it was on all the time.
00:34:17
Kendahl
um
00:34:20
Julian Contreras Jr
our Call of Duty clan name was called the Breakfast Club.
00:34:24
Kendahl
Yeah, we did. Yeah, it was.
00:34:25
Julian Contreras Jr
And each each one of us had a different clan tag that was a breakfast item. It's eggs, milk.
00:34:33
Julian Contreras Jr
We had a Yeah, it was...
00:34:33
Kendahl
I think we had bacon at one point and sausage.
00:34:37
Kendahl
Oh, pancake. We had pancake. Yeah.
00:34:39
Julian Contreras Jr
It was so much fun. We had a dollar symbol for the S.
00:34:43
Kendahl
yeah
00:34:44
Julian Contreras Jr
But...
00:34:45
Kendahl
Yeah, that was pretty fun. That was, wow, that takes me back.
00:34:47
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:34:48
Kendahl
That's funny.
00:34:48
Julian Contreras Jr
That's two memories in one for you. They're right there, bud.
00:34:50
Kendahl
Oh, good. Okay. um i have I have a little bit of an a little unknown movie, but this was produced by Steven Spielberg. It is 1987. Batteries Included.
00:35:03
Kendahl
nineteen eighty seven batteries not included
00:35:07
Julian Contreras Jr
okay. Okay.
00:35:09
Kendahl
So a little this movie was not very well โ€“ to this day, it's not very well known. Like very few people know about it. It's this fun movie where these aliens who are robots come to our planet.
00:35:23
Kendahl
And they're like these little โ€“ the size of like a disc and dinner plates. And make โ€“ they make robot babies. And it's just, it's, it sounds weird.
00:35:34
Kendahl
It's super cute. They, they, they end up taking shelter in this rundown old apartment complex. That's falling apart. And the whole movie is about how they're helping this apartment complex fix the issues that they're having.
00:35:47
Kendahl
um So these little robots go through and fix all the little things that are going wrong. And um yeah, I mean, it's like I said, it's produced by Steven Spielberg. I don't remember who the director was. It's a fun movie.
00:36:01
Kendahl
There's a million people you're going to recognize if you if you know the 80s, very older actors. you're not going to really recognize a lot of them, but I don't think any of them survived past the eighties.
00:36:12
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, geez.
00:36:13
Kendahl
So, but, um, it, anyway, it's a really fun, cute movie.
00:36:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:36:19
Kendahl
i I like this one because it's one of those, um, if you haven't seen it and you do see it, you're like, wait, how does this even make sense? There's no way this could actually happen, but at the same time, you kind of get sucked into this reality that maybe it could happen.
00:36:29
Julian Contreras Jr
right
00:36:35
Kendahl
So,
00:36:35
Julian Contreras Jr
And I think I saw this movie at my grandpa's house. I think he had it on VHS. And that movie is goes hand in hand with another movie called Cocoon.
00:36:46
Kendahl
Oh, yeah, yeah. Like all the same actors.
00:36:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, so if you know those two movies, congratulations, you're in my generation.
00:36:53
Kendahl
Old. Yep. Yeah, yeah.
00:36:55
Julian Contreras Jr
No, positive spin. You're in my generation.
00:36:57
Kendahl
Yep.
00:37:00
Julian Contreras Jr
But yeah, it's ah it's a great one. And it's called Batteries Not Included.
00:37:02
Kendahl
yep
00:37:03
Julian Contreras Jr
And it has a little asterisk on it, right?
00:37:05
Kendahl
yeah yeah
00:37:06
Julian Contreras Jr
If I'm seeing the title right. Alright, cool.
00:37:08
Kendahl
yep
00:37:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Good poll. That one's deep in the well. Alright,
00:37:12
Kendahl
Yeah. I have a couple of those here.
00:37:15
Julian Contreras Jr
I only have two left. But I gotta get to this one. It is from 1987. Elizabeth Shue in it.
00:37:26
Julian Contreras Jr
has elizabeth shu in it
00:37:30
Kendahl
Okay.
00:37:31
Julian Contreras Jr
Adventures in Babysitting.
00:37:33
Kendahl
Okay. Can I...
00:37:34
Julian Contreras Jr
And I know I've spoke about this before, but I want a deeper dive in this guy.
00:37:38
Kendahl
Can I tell you, I've never seen this movie all the way through.
00:37:42
Julian Contreras Jr
What? Why? You shut it off?
00:37:44
Kendahl
No, I just, I've never, it's never been a movie that I put on intentionally and watched. It's always just been on TV that I've, so it is one of those eighties movies. It's not that I, I ah have not watched it. I've just never intentionally turned it on to watch it.
00:38:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, so do you know what the story, of how it begins and ends, or do you just like watch parts in the middle?
00:38:05
Kendahl
Not at all.
00:38:06
Julian Contreras Jr
You don't know at all.
00:38:07
Kendahl
Yeah. I can't remember anything about this movie.
00:38:08
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, fine.
00:38:10
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:38:11
Julian Contreras Jr
I'll tell you, I'll give you a little rundown right here. Cause I enjoy this.
00:38:14
Kendahl
okay OK.
00:38:15
Julian Contreras Jr
This takes place in Chicago. And I don't, I don't know if they showed the bean. I don't know when that actually got to Chicago, but that building that has the flat edge on it, the iconic building from Chicago, right?
00:38:29
Kendahl
OK.
00:38:30
Julian Contreras Jr
You know what I'm talking about
00:38:30
Kendahl
Yep. Yep.
00:38:32
Julian Contreras Jr
So this family, they need a babysitter because they're going to a company party at that building. So the only babysitter that they have is Chris, who is Elizabeth Shue.
00:38:44
Kendahl
Right.
00:38:45
Julian Contreras Jr
Elizabeth Shue is a senior in high school, does not want to babysit, and she's going on a date with her boyfriend, who is played by a guy that I don't know his name.
00:38:54
Kendahl
Okay.
00:38:58
Julian Contreras Jr
Maybe you can look it up. It's the bad guy in Billy Madison.
00:39:02
Kendahl
Okay. Give me a second here.
00:39:05
Julian Contreras Jr
So he ends up canceling the date saying he's sick. So she has no choice but to go babysit. Because she's not going to sit at home alone. And of course, the oldest son has a crush on Chris.
00:39:20
Julian Contreras Jr
No, who wouldn't?
00:39:22
Kendahl
is it um Is it Vincent D'Onofrio?
00:39:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Did I forget? No, no, no. Not Vincent.
00:39:29
Kendahl
See, again, this is going back to I don't know anything about this movie. Okay, keep going.
00:39:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, forget about forget about it.
00:39:35
Kendahl
okay keep going
00:39:38
Julian Contreras Jr
So they end up and Chris has a friend who is threatening to run away. And Chris is telling her, no, don't do it. Please don't do it. But I have to go babysit. So could you just not?
00:39:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Well, friend does. She makes it to the bus station in Chicago, runs out of money, can't go anywhere, can't get back home. So Chris has to come to the rescue and go get her. So she tries to make a deal where the kids will stay there and she'll give them the money if she can go. And of course the kids don't want to, they're going to tag along. I want to go to Chicago.
00:40:14
Julian Contreras Jr
All the adventures happen. It's the title. Their car gets stolen. They get a flat tire. They get shot at because of the tow truck driver. It's,
00:40:25
Julian Contreras Jr
it's
00:40:25
Kendahl
Oh, I do know the subway thing where they're getting to like a...
00:40:31
Kendahl
The guy says a bad word or whatever and she's like, take that back or don't remember, something like that.
00:40:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay, I'll go into that. if If you watch it on Disney+, plus it is on there. It is heavily edited. So the gang is fighting. There's another gang, two gangs.
00:40:48
Julian Contreras Jr
And they're attacking on this bus and they're sitting right in the middle. So as soon as the gang start to go at each other, she stands up and she's like wait. And then one of the guys says, don't F with us.
00:41:01
Julian Contreras Jr
It's their gang name. I can't remember what it is.
00:41:04
Kendahl
Mm
00:41:04
Julian Contreras Jr
And he throws the knife down and it hits the kid's shoe and his toe.
00:41:11
Julian Contreras Jr
So she pulls the knife out and she says, don't F with the babysitter.
00:41:12
Kendahl
hmm.
00:41:16
Julian Contreras Jr
And they let him walk out. All right.
00:41:16
Kendahl
Mm hmm.
00:41:18
Kendahl
OK.
00:41:20
Julian Contreras Jr
So on Disney Plus, I think they change it to fudge.
00:41:23
Kendahl
Probably.
00:41:24
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. That's a great scene. Super icon. I can't believe you haven't seen this all the way through. It's Elizabeth Shue, my guy.
00:41:32
Kendahl
Sorry. This is one of those.
00:41:33
Julian Contreras Jr
It's okay. I mean, it is what it is.
00:41:37
Kendahl
yeah
00:41:37
Julian Contreras Jr
But, yeah.
00:41:37
Kendahl
Moving on. but
00:41:40
Julian Contreras Jr
Adventures in Babysitting. If you know how I'm feeling, you you've seen it.
00:41:42
Kendahl
right.
00:41:46
Julian Contreras Jr
Go on.
00:41:47
Kendahl
All right. Are we ready for my next one?
00:41:50
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I only have one left, so...
00:41:52
Kendahl
Okay, so I'm going to do a quick rundown then because I've got a few. All so in no particular order, ah Great Outdoors. i don't you...
00:42:01
Julian Contreras Jr
John Candy.
00:42:02
Kendahl
John Candy. Yep. ah Short Circuit.
00:42:06
Julian Contreras Jr
I am personally a fan of Short Circuit 2, but Rotten Tomatoes thinks I'm a dumb-dumb.
00:42:12
Kendahl
I know, right? i Actually, Short Circuit 2 is one of my favorites. So, ah yeah, so that's that's that one. um My big one that I want to bring up, and this is because of the main character, Dead Poets Society.
00:42:25
Kendahl
This is one of Robin Williams, probably one of his best movies that he ever made. um And the it's the line that a lot of people remember. um He's a teacher at an all-boys school.
00:42:37
Kendahl
And all of a sudden, the got the boys start standing up on the on on their their desks. and Oh, captain nocap are Captain, my captain, right?
00:42:44
Julian Contreras Jr
right
00:42:46
Kendahl
So um great. that That, to me, is one of the um probably one of the best movies that Robin Williams ever did. I remember watching that as a kid um and thinking like how much I wanted to be a part of that like writing you know being a part of that writing element and so it it kind of inspired me to write when I was a kid after watching it so that's kind of the connection I've got I think it's a great movie there's a lot of there's actually ah there's quite a few um people if you if you did watch it because you've got sorry two seconds here
00:43:26
Kendahl
um So you've got um Robin Williams. You've got ah you robert Robert Sean len Leonard. You probably remember him from House. um he played He played in that.
00:43:40
Kendahl
You've got Ethan ethan Hawke. I'm trying to think of some of the other ones that are that are bigger names in here. um Oh, oh, Kurtwood Smith. He was red in um that 70s show.
00:43:56
Kendahl
So, I mean, there's there's a lot of faces in this movie that I guarantee you, if you watch it, you'll you'll recognize um there's a lot of other actors in here that also played um some of the students.
00:44:07
Kendahl
I guarantee you see their faces, you'll you'll remember them. But yeah, great movie. and That was 1989, 85% Rotten Tomatoes.
00:44:18
Julian Contreras Jr
So almost out of the night, almost out of the eighty s
00:44:21
Kendahl
that was the latest of the that i had.
00:44:24
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And a bonus movie, because just because you mentioned his name, Kurtwood Smith. He's the bad guy in Robocop.
00:44:33
Kendahl
rubb cup yeah yeah
00:44:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Also in the 80s, made my list, but not this list that I'm gonna speak about because Robocop is such a good movie.
00:44:35
Kendahl
and their eighty s
00:44:43
Kendahl
yeah Yeah, it is. it is i heard I actually heard a um ah really weird reference that RoboCop is it's actually a religious movie.
00:44:54
Kendahl
We'll have to go down that road someday. have you've ever so Yeah, I know.
00:44:57
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay.
00:44:58
Kendahl
if you've ever seen RoboCop, it's the furthest thing from a religious movie. But ah yeah, it's i'll have to I'll have to go down that tangent one of these days. It's funny.
00:45:07
Julian Contreras Jr
All right.
00:45:08
Kendahl
All right.
00:45:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. So is, was that your heavy hitter? Dead post society?
00:45:13
Kendahl
No, so I have one last one, but I'll let you go.
00:45:16
Julian Contreras Jr
Okay. This might be the same. Hopefully it is. Maybe not. I don't know. You can't get out of the eighties without this trilogy. that I believe is one long movie.
00:45:30
Julian Contreras Jr
All right?
00:45:30
Kendahl
Yep.
00:45:31
Kendahl
Okay.
00:45:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Back to the Future.
00:45:34
Kendahl
I intentionally left it off my list, but yes, because i knew you were going to bring it up.
00:45:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. I can't. I mean, if you look at my wall here, it is all, everything is Back to the Future in this room, pretty much.
00:45:43
Kendahl
Yeah, was going to say, right there. Yep.
00:45:48
Julian Contreras Jr
Except for Art the Clown's moving in. That's a different thing.
00:45:51
Kendahl
ah He's sneaking in. Yeah.
00:45:53
Julian Contreras Jr
he's yeah He's slowly coming in from the left.
00:45:55
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:45:57
Julian Contreras Jr
But the first one of these came out in 1985.
00:45:57
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:46:02
Julian Contreras Jr
Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Leah Thompson, the list goes on and on and on who's in this movie.
00:46:08
Julian Contreras Jr
We've all seen it a thousand times. 1989 is part two.
00:46:08
Kendahl
Right.
00:46:15
Kendahl
Right.
00:46:15
Julian Contreras Jr
The only major difference is that in the first one, the first gennitor Jennifer sorry was Claudia Wells, who...
00:46:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Mainly didn't do much. She was there.
00:46:28
Kendahl
Yeah, just right.
00:46:31
Julian Contreras Jr
But in 1989, Elizabeth Shue is the new Jennifer.
00:46:35
Kendahl
Ends up coming in. Yep. And she stays in for the that one in the third one.
00:46:39
Julian Contreras Jr
Yes.
00:46:39
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:46:40
Julian Contreras Jr
This whole trilogy is absolutely amazing. I mean, sure, there's a couple plot holes here and there, and everybody else says, well, and it takes them forever to find out, but...
00:46:52
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, Twin Pines Mall turns into...
00:46:56
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:46:56
Julian Contreras Jr
what's the What's the name of the mall after?
00:47:01
Kendahl
Isn't it like single pines or something like that?
00:47:03
Julian Contreras Jr
think it's Lone Pine Mall or something like that.
00:47:04
Kendahl
Lone Pine. Yeah, Lone Pine.
00:47:06
Julian Contreras Jr
But you can... And the reason it changed is because he ran over the tree in the past. It's crazy.
00:47:13
Kendahl
Okay, you want to hear a connection that I just read yesterday about this? I was reading a thing of like weird connections between movies.
00:47:16
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:47:19
Kendahl
Okay, so there's a connection, maybe, it's a fan theory, between Star Wars... And back to the future.
00:47:28
Julian Contreras Jr
All right, I got to hear this.
00:47:28
Kendahl
You ready for this? Okay. So Christopher Lloyd's character, Doc, goes back in time. And at one point he said, I went a little bit too far and I had, and and then I had to figure out how to get back. Right. He has a conversation. it's like a brief throw over.
00:47:44
Kendahl
So he goes back too far in a galaxy too far away, ends up in, in the planetary system that would be the, um, in star Wars.
00:47:55
Kendahl
Um, meets a group of people that would then form a religion based off of this man that shows up out of nowhere and then disappears to go, go back to the future. And it was the man in the DeLorean Mandalorian.
00:48:09
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh my God. ah Wow.
00:48:13
Kendahl
Right.
00:48:14
Julian Contreras Jr
that's That's pretty good.
00:48:16
Julian Contreras Jr
I didn't see that coming.
00:48:16
Kendahl
ah
00:48:17
Kendahl
I, I did not either. And I heard that fan theory and I was like, wait, what, but Hey, kind of fits.
00:48:24
Julian Contreras Jr
kind of Yeah, I could see it, I guess.
00:48:27
Kendahl
Right. i thought that was pretty funny. I was laughing at that one. So anyway, that's my, that's my back to the future connection in that. But yeah, hands down, just, it is a great series.
00:48:36
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, I mean, I don't...
00:48:40
Kendahl
I, I have, I have bought all these movies. I have pirated all these movies um because back before I could have money to buy them on Blu-ray, i pirated them. And then when I had the money, then I bought them.
00:48:55
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:48:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Hopefully you didn't download it from LimeWire.
00:48:58
Kendahl
ah
00:49:01
Julian Contreras Jr
Another callback to our generation.
00:49:01
Kendahl
Nobody's listening. Yeah. It was more like Frostwire.
00:49:07
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, probably got a lot of other things downloaded in there with it.
00:49:09
Kendahl
Napster.
00:49:10
Julian Contreras Jr
and Yeah.
00:49:10
Kendahl
Napster. There you go.
00:49:12
Julian Contreras Jr
But I don't know. How much could we say about this movie? There's so many references. And it's almost, I think in my opinion, it's flawless in the time travel.
00:49:23
Kendahl
Mm-hmm.
00:49:24
Julian Contreras Jr
Except for the fact that somehow Biff knows exactly how to work the DeLorean and go back and meet himself and give him the almanac. That's a little iffy.
00:49:35
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:49:37
Julian Contreras Jr
But if the dates were set, I guess he could figure it out.
00:49:40
Kendahl
yeah I don't know. I think there's a lot of funness to the whole movie because especially in the third one, I, i the third one is actually one of my favorites. Ironically. I know the first one is obviously the best, but I don't know. I liked the third one a lot.
00:49:56
Julian Contreras Jr
I like the first one. i absolutely love the second one. Yeah, the whole, the hoverboards and and he's trying to go over water.
00:50:00
Kendahl
It's fun. Yeah.
00:50:05
Julian Contreras Jr
He's like, you can't use that on water. Yeah.
00:50:10
Julian Contreras Jr
ah yeah
00:50:12
Kendahl
Yeah. I mean, there's so many good things about it. and the And the fun thing is, is if if you pay attention, the like like you said, like the correlation between all the timelines, it everything really works well.
00:50:25
Kendahl
And then for them to like have the have the letter that he doesn't get until he comes back. And then, yeah, it's just I mean, all these things like the the random guy showing up with a letter.
00:50:33
Julian Contreras Jr
ah
00:50:36
Kendahl
ah Is that the end of the first one?
00:50:39
Julian Contreras Jr
No, it's the end of... ah Yeah.
00:50:40
Kendahl
That is the end of the second one.
00:50:43
Julian Contreras Jr
And he he just shows up and he's like, are you Marty McFly?
00:50:43
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:50:46
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:50:46
Julian Contreras Jr
And he's like, yeah.
00:50:48
Kendahl
And he gives them a letter that that um they held on to for so many years because Doc was in the 1800s. Yeah. I love it. It's like everything just fits.
00:50:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. And he ended up winning the pool or something to go deliver the letter to see if he'd actually be there.
00:51:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Because
00:51:03
Kendahl
If there's yeah somebody that is going to be there.
00:51:05
Kendahl
I remember that. Yeah.
00:51:06
Julian Contreras Jr
they had an exact time and date and place and everything to be right there.
00:51:08
Kendahl
date. Yep. Right.
00:51:13
Julian Contreras Jr
That's good. i
00:51:13
Kendahl
All right.
00:51:14
Julian Contreras Jr
The third one introduces Clara, who is Christopher Lloyd's love interest.
00:51:20
Kendahl
Right.
00:51:21
Julian Contreras Jr
And that's kind of the reason he wants to stay in the past because he absolutely loves her. And then, of course, you know, at the end, he ends up turning the whole train into a time machine.
00:51:33
Kendahl
My time machine again.
00:51:35
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, but now it just runs on the rails. And he's got the two children. Yeah, it's great. I absolutely love it.
00:51:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Back to the Future is fantastic.
00:51:43
Kendahl
It is.
00:51:46
Kendahl
um Okay. So my heavy hitter, my big one, the like the the biggest one that stands out to me is um one of my favorite movies of all time, Stand By Me. um
00:51:56
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh.
00:51:57
Kendahl
this is a This is based on a book by Stephen King. And again, you've got just all the the big actors of the time. um You've got River Phoenix.
00:52:08
Kendahl
You've got um the...
00:52:11
Julian Contreras Jr
Jerry O'Connell?
00:52:13
Kendahl
What's that?
00:52:13
Julian Contreras Jr
Jerry O'Connell?
00:52:14
Kendahl
Right. And then you've got one of the Corey's. I can't remember which one. um And then. um
00:52:22
Kendahl
You've got, oh, man, what's his name from 24? Darn.
00:52:26
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah.
00:52:27
Kendahl
Kiefer Sutherland. um And I mean, there's a there's a lot of random actors in here that you're going to be like, oh, I know that guy. Oh, I know that guy. um And it's just a good it's just a good movie.
00:52:39
Kendahl
I think it still holds up to today about, you know, boys just wanting to explore, or have fun. ah get into trouble, do stupid things, say stupid things, grow in your friendship, learn about each other. I think it's good.
00:52:51
Julian Contreras Jr
yeah
00:52:52
Kendahl
So I think it's just one of those movies, even though it's, it was, I mean, this is way back when. So, I mean, Stand By Me, this was written in, i mean, this was, this came out in 1986, 92% Rotten Tomatoes. but I think it still holds up today. I think it's one of those movies that just stands the test of time because it doesn't, there's nothing in it that says, oh, it's this timeframe.
00:53:14
Kendahl
like Maybe the music a little bit, but.
00:53:16
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah, the attire, their apparel.
00:53:19
Kendahl
Well, I know that, but I'm just saying like a lot of it, the the elements that make that movie the part that makes that movie, they're all things that are still relevant today.
00:53:29
Julian Contreras Jr
And Kiefer does play the perfect Stephen King bully.
00:53:32
Julian Contreras Jr
He's got a switchblade and a knife. As of the all his bullies do.
00:53:32
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:53:36
Kendahl
Right. Yeah.
00:53:38
Julian Contreras Jr
And I think we mentioned it back before in an episode, but I want to see if you remember. but Do you remember the actual title of this movie before it was called Stand By Me?
00:53:49
Kendahl
Oh, it was. um
00:53:54
Kendahl
Oh, I can't remember now.
00:53:55
Julian Contreras Jr
The Body.
00:53:56
Kendahl
ah Oh, that's right. Yeah.
00:53:58
Julian Contreras Jr
And then the reason they changed it is because somebody just kept whistling that song. Either wass a cameraman or somebody off. They just kept whistling it singing it. And then eventually they were like, all right, we're just going to call this movie Stand By Me.
00:54:10
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:10
Julian Contreras Jr
ah
00:54:10
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:54:12
Julian Contreras Jr
So, fun fact on that movie.
00:54:12
Kendahl
yeah
00:54:14
Julian Contreras Jr
I like that one a lot too. It's really good.
00:54:16
Kendahl
Yeah. So I had a couple other ones on my list. um Like, you know, one of the other ones, another trilogy that came out of the eighties karate kid. um
00:54:24
Julian Contreras Jr
That's, yeah.
00:54:25
Kendahl
So, and then um funny, weird one, raising, raising Arizona. um That's a Nicholas cage.
00:54:32
Julian Contreras Jr
Nicolas Cage.
00:54:34
Kendahl
Yep. And then last one that won an Academy award terms of endearment.
00:54:39
Julian Contreras Jr
ah you know i To this day, I have not seen that movie.
00:54:39
Kendahl
So yeah, that's, that's a really good one.
00:54:42
Julian Contreras Jr
It won a lot of awards, I think.
00:54:44
Kendahl
Yeah, it did.
00:54:46
Julian Contreras Jr
I just haven't sat down and actually watched it
00:54:48
Kendahl
Yeah. That's another one. You'll, you'll recognize every single person in that film, just and all over the place.
00:54:55
Julian Contreras Jr
Yeah. I mean, I'd run down my list, but there's going to be so many on there that I'll just save them for future episodes.
00:54:56
Kendahl
So.
00:55:03
Kendahl
Yeah. I mean, I, I had a bunch of other ones too, that I was thinking about, but it's like, again, we go back to this, just these movies were everything to us because we rented them.
00:55:03
Julian Contreras Jr
Not that I dont want to...
00:55:11
Kendahl
We kept them. We turned them in late and we rented them five more times. So we got this, we got the next one free. Yeah. So, yeah, it's just the yeah that's that's what it was.
00:55:24
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. I think that's about covering our generation. Not in its entirety, obviously, but some of the ones that we want to talk to and take up your time with today.
00:55:35
Julian Contreras Jr
But do you have anything coming up this week you're excited about?
00:55:35
Kendahl
Yeah.
00:55:40
Kendahl
Oh, ah not at all.
00:55:43
Julian Contreras Jr
Oh, not at all. Oh, okay.
00:55:44
Julian Contreras Jr
Wow.
00:55:44
Kendahl
I'm going to finish Invincible.
00:55:46
Kendahl
That's for sure. I'm definitely going to finish Invincible. I'm hoping to go... um I am going camping for the first time this weekend. That's that's the best part.
00:55:55
Julian Contreras Jr
right. Taking that new truck.
00:55:57
Kendahl
I wish it was a new truck.
00:56:01
Julian Contreras Jr
All right. That's going to do it for us. I hope you enjoyed our generation of the eighties. I know if you're from our generation, you're going to look at this list and be like, dude, there's a thousand more. i know that.
00:56:14
Julian Contreras Jr
I'm not going to apologize. Cause these are just the ones we wanted to talk about.
00:56:18
Kendahl
Right.
00:56:19
Julian Contreras Jr
But I guess until next time, ain't nobody leaves this place without singing the blues.
00:56:26
Kendahl
And just remember, turn on something
