let's get straight into

Impact of Team Changes and Player Performance

00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
it. And the team news, Matthias Jensen missed out on the bench again through illness this time. i was quite pleased to hear that given that it means he's not injured um and he should be available therefore after the international break. But it does sum up what has been a disrupted season for him and without him on the bench again.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And without Carvalho on the bench, who's been injured in recent weeks, we did look to lack any kind of attacking depth on the bench. And if we needed to make those changes second half, if we needed to get back into the game, I was a little bit concerned that we didn't have the options there available.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Vandenberg, however, did return to the bench. I would have probably started him over Pinnock. I said that in the in the preview podcast, if he's fit. We don't know how ah how much he's been in training during the week, whether he was fit to start or play 90 minutes.
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, Pinnock... Thank you.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah taken over in vandenberg's absence from the start but it's good to have vanderberg back and i still do see perhaps after the international break that vandenberg and collins partnership which seemed to be flourishing a few weeks ago back together Off the bench, Thomas Frank did show some more faith in his substitutes this time round.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
The likes of Jan Moliuk and Ben Mee came on to see the game out well. I want to talk about Younes Emre Konak as well. He is not a player who has featured much this season, and particularly in the second half of the season.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
When he has played um short cameos off the bench in the past, I thought he didn't... quite look ready for Premier League football, the physicality of it. But I was really impressed with this cameo.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
He, as well as Jarmolek, and I might not be giving Jarmolek as much credit here because he is perhaps a more established member of the team now. But Konak in particular, that last 10, 15 minutes, he's seeing the game out well, winning his duels in the middle of the park, which you've not really seen from him much this season.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
He really came on, he really solidified the midfield and he really helped to see the game out. So brilliant use of substitution on Thomas Frank. Nice to see him trusting some of the younger players. Nice to see Ben Mee out there again. We might not see him, I suspect, too many more times this season. So it's nice to see him.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
playing football pa for perhaps one of the last times. So good all round, I think, in relation to the use of the subs and making what we can out of what what was a very limited subs bench.

Opposition Analysis: Bournemouth's Strategy

00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
In relation to Bournemouth, as I said beforehand, before the game, I like the likes of Zabani, Housen and Kerkhez. I thought... the majority of Bournemouth's dangerous moments came on that left-hand side with Kirkhead's bombing forward.
00:03:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he is um ah really good young player and I think all three of those we could see move on from Bournemouth to seek um a move to a big club, how it how it works these days if ah if a club decides to get a real star but I can see them making a lot of money from those players and what what great finds they've been for Bournemouth.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
What i didn't mention beforehand, which I probably should have, and I thought this is a slight weakness to Bournemouth's game at the weekend, Kepa Ringoal. Once the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, I think he still might have that record when Chelsea signed him.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now on loan at Bournemouth from Chelsea. Not commanding at all, I don't think. Not commanding at all. I think his shot stopping is okay, but I think his command of his area coming for crosses. We'll go on talk about it in the second half of the podcast. But I just...
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't think he's convincing at all in God. And I think again here, you could argue that he perhaps let Bournemouth down. More depth on the bench once again, um with an opposition side, likes of Sinistera, Uitara and David Brooks all on the bench.
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got to remember though, Bournemouth did have their own little injury crisis. a month or two ago and they coped quite well. But it's nice to see Brentford getting results in these types of games against sides who have perhaps a little bit more strength and depth to bring off the bench.

Match Review: Key Moments and Strategies

00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
myself, Daniel. So let's get straight in into the action from the game on the south coast at the weekend. I thought it was a bright competitive start from both sides, much of what I expected.
00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I expected it to be a tight game. I think we saw a pattern early on. Bournemouth feeding the ball out to that left-hand side. Kerkhev's getting high and wide, willing to put crosses in. And they can be a real danger from those scenarios. And I thought they overloaded that side.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
at times and Aya perhaps needed a bit more help um to deal with Kerkhez and also the winger on that side getting forward. I thought most of their good moments came from there as did the first goal which was the first real chance of no if you can call it a chance. I thought it was a little bit lucky, a little bit unlucky sorry from Janel him, goes in you don't necessarily expect that to happen there but I want to talk a little bit about his body movements and he almost appears to be turning away from the ball and there's parallels to the own goal he scored against Spurs a month or so ago now. And it is slightly strange to me. i You don't see many footballers...
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
almost turn away from the ball as he does when it's about to hit him. And, you know, is he trying to get out the way? There's no real intention on where he's trying to divert that ball. And is that why it's resulting in, you know, it's going in any direction and, you know, twice now and in in just over a month, it's it's hit him and and it's gone in, in albeit different circumstances, but,
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like perhaps he could just be a little bit more aware, you know be a bit more intentional with you know if if it's going to hit you, if you're going to get contact on it, you make sure you divert that contact away from the goal.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just don't think you know quite there's enough. But you know looking at the goal as a whole, I think it's an unlucky situation. It's an unlucky scenario. And we're perhaps a little bit unfortunate. to concede a goal like that, but I do think it could be avoidable, and Janel's body movements to me are not natural, it's not what i normally see from other players, other defenders, when when they're defending crosses like this, and he needs to be more intentional, and he needs to divert the ball away into a different direction. Don't turn your back on the ball. Never turn your back on the ball. I don't think that's a good look particularly at all. And, you know, you know, haven't had a decent game aside from that, um but we don't want to see any more of those. Let's put it that way between now and the end of the season.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brentford responded pretty well. i thought the way we went forward, the way we're trying to attack, a lot more line-breaking passes, a lot more low crosses. It wasn't the incessant loop crosses into the box that we've seen in in recent weeks. I thought Christian Norgard, who we'll talk about a lot in this episode, his pass through to Damsgaard, back through the lines, leading to the corner for the goal. Absolutely brilliant. And that's the creativity we want in the side. And he can do that. It's not just Damsgaard that can do that. Norgard.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
has such a well-rounded game. I don't think he's just a number six, and I think he showed that here. It was great to see a scoring from the set piece that followed. Wisser, what a leap on the man.
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has a tendency to do that at times, as does Kevin Sharder. But I will caveat that with saying Bournemouth will be extremely disappointed with that. And as I spoke about in part one, Kepa,
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
His command of the box, particularly at set pieces, I think is really, really poor. He came out to get it, didn't really get anywhere near the ball. And when you come out to get it as a keeper and you're committed, you have to get there. Otherwise you end up being in the middle of nowhere and it's a simple header for Whistler once he's up there.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you know All he's got to do is direct it into the net and it's in. and I think Bournemouth will be so frustrated with that. And, you know, what what is Kepa doing? and He needs to either stay in goal or he needs to make sure he gets it if he's coming out free like that.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he didn't get anywhere near it and it adds to Brentford's very few goals from corner kicks this season. Something I'm very pleased to see. I know that Whistler ran over to Keith Andrews when he scored, giving him some credit.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I still think we need to do more in these situations. There was another corner slightly after where again, Kepa was flapping around a bit. The ball was hooked back in and Sharder hooked it wide. I think this is good. I think it's... um it's um good to see us threatening from these kinds of scenarios.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, I think we can't, we can't really be relying on keepers doing this every week. You know, that there are also a number of commanding goalkeepers in the league and we, I still want to see us try more inventive routines, get on the keeper more, you know, really, really make it difficult for them. You know, you've only got to look at the the Newcastle goal in in the cup final against Liverpool, you know, a,
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Routine that was carefully fought out. Dan Byrne peeling off um at the back post in an area where the centre-backs don't occupy the ball, ensuring he gets first contact on it.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you can see what happens in those situations. So I would still like Brentford to be a bit more inventive, try a few different things. And I think now this time in the season is really good to try and do that. But credit to us for getting the goal from the corner on this occasion.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Following this, we continue to look bright. Another fantastic Christian Norgaard pass from deep through the line, setting Brian and Boomer away to whistle one wide. Janelle also fired over from a cutback.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shard then broke through on the right. No one was there when he put in the low cross. Could he have a bit more awareness? Could he try and pick out Whistle rather than... just put the ball into an area at quite a pace, um which may be difficult to get onto the end of. But this is the type of attacking that I've been wanting to see from us in recent weeks, that particularly in the home games you haven't shown.
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
i thought, you know, it was line breaking. There was more low crosses. There was a more variety in our attacks. Yes, Brian and Bruma still cut it and had a shot here and there. But We don't need to completely rip everything up. oh My whole point was that we just need to vary our attacking a bit more and I thought we did that here.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't see too many crosses going in at a height where Zabani and Halsey would have been comfortable to defend them and I thought we got our rewards. and Perhaps could have had more if it wasn't for the final touch, a final pass um in the opposition's box.
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Moving into the second half, I thought we got away with a couple, especially at the beginning, which could be another sign of a slow start to a second half. And it could have been very different again. I'm talking about the Semenya chance, the free header within a couple of minutes of the restart.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
No one picking him up. He gets in between the two centre-backs. He has quite a bit of a space around him. I don't think you can we can afford to give those chances away. He needs to be picked up. Defenders need to be closer to him.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so from Semenya's point of view, he absolutely has to hit the target. um I know it came off the bar, but i think hit the target either side of Flecken and that's in. And we would have been brewing another slow start to the second half.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth... Did stay on top for that early part of the second half. Tavernier hit the bar again following a well-work move. If Bournemouth had perhaps scored that, maybe we could hold our hands up and say that was a very good goal from their point of view.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then, somewhat against the run and play, came throw-in. Kevin Sharder launching one into the box. And I said this before when we scored one a few weeks ago.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
A long throwing like that will always create chaos chaos if it is allowed to bounce. And what a top finish from Christian Orgaard. A striker's finish. Perfect contact on the ball into the corner. Difficult to save.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he was clearly my man in the match, I think, here. He does a lot more than um a number six would normally do. You know, he's got that creative passing in his locker.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got the ability to come up with quite big goals on at times. I very... Rarely, um and this dates back to you know the very opening, the very first win of those 50 Premier League wins all those years ago, getting the second goal against Arsenal in the opening Premier League night. Norgaard's always come up with big moments in the club and I think it's really important that we try and extend his contract to get him on board again next season. I think there's an option in there, so I think we should be able to do it, but obviously we've not heard any news as of yet and as of now, he is free to
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
negotiate with clubs abroad if he wishes to do so but I think we've got to keep him in that's four goals for the season now for our number six two more than Mikael Damsgaard and that's not really something as much as I've gone to praise Damsgaard all season that's not really something many would expect so I think Norgard are so often underrated deserves a lot of credit here and was my man of the match David Brooks once again after the goal. A big chance for Bournemouth. The cross came in again from the left-hand side.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't get the contact he wanted. It landed almost on him in the middle of the goal. He got contact on it straight at fleck and Flecken. Flecken showed good reactions to keep it the right side of the line.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, better contact either side of Flecken. That's probably it. And so you could say arguably... It could have been a point apiece here, but we got the luck we deserved. And again, I've got a credit Flecken. I thought he's grown massively again this season.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I've got to a stage where I feel really comfortable with him in goal now. You know, we see the old mistake from him. I still stand by the goal against Villa. perhaps he could have done better with, but his general performance this season, really good, I think, and and making those saves, doing what he has to do. He didn't have to save any particular one-on-one efforts here, but again, came up big when we needed him to. And he's someone we can rely on between the sticks.

Brentford's Future Prospects

00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think it's underestimated how difficult it has been for him
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
take over someone like David Rea and I think we've got a solid option in goal now I thought Brentford after this point did see the game out well um and mentioned at the beginning that the impact that the subs have sometimes with 5-10 minutes a am slightly hesitant when Thomas Frank decides to go back 5 we had 4 centre-backs on the pitch because Vandenberg was at right wing back and we had Collins Pinnokan Benmi at centre-back at one point We took Sharda off. We had an extra midfielder in Konak. He played alongside Yamo and Norgard to see the game out.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it worked. I've got to say it worked. You know, sometimes making those changes can invite um us to sit in a low block. It can invite the team other team onto us. And sometimes...
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we allow too much pressure for too long, ultimately we we can't keep the opposition out. But I thought we did really well. We stayed up the pitch. We were sensible. we won duels in midfield. We continued to be in their faces and we continued to be aggressive.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we saw the game out. And like, as I mentioned at start, people and the likes of Konak, really good Really good contribution from him and we saw the players give their own appreciation to him after the game when they pushed him in front of the away fans to receive some credit. So it's positive positive for the future of the club. The likes Yarmulic and Konak growing with the side and hopefully we'll see more of them as this season draws to a conclusion as well. So that was our 50th win in the Premier League. I've got a few stats around that. We are the fastest side in the Premier League to reach that total since the mid-90s.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I imagine the sides that reached a total then were teams who came up into the Premier League as the Premier League formed, and the teams that already in the top division as the Premier League formed. You know, the traditional big sides of England and the fact that no one's reached 50 Premier League wins um as quickly as us since the mid-90s, I think, cannot be overlooked. That's absolutely fantastic.
00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
To me, that statistic means we are the best promoted side to have come up and to have sustained and the the form we have done for the the past four years. So absolutely fantastic. and And that really can't be underestimated, especially these days. Looking at the league table, looking at the league table last year as well, and the number of sides who have come up and really, really struggled to stay up, most often haven't stayed up.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Even the season Brentford got promoted, Watford and Norwich went straight back down despite us being the playoff winners and them being the top two that season. So absolutely fantastic. We're only one of 10 clubs as well with a positive goal difference in an all-time table. So again, we'll be along alongside the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, I would imagine.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've scored more goals as well than Manchester United since promotion. And That is ah quite astounding to me. you know United have not been through the best times, but they're still a size of a club that you would expect over a long period of four or five years to outperform a team like Brentford. And the fact we've kept our levels almost above theirs for the majority of this time is absolutely outstanding. you know The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo have all been at the club and in the last four years, but Brentford...
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
has still managed to outscore Manchester United. So I don't think those stats can be overlooked. I think we've got to be really, really proud as

Conclusion and Listener Appreciation

00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
where we are at the club. Whether or not Europe is still on this season, I don't know. i suspect much will hinge on how we get on at St James' Park. I'm not too confident ahead of that one, especially the atmosphere that that will be there that night, being being the newly crowned Carabao Cup winners. But We've got plenty to look forward. You never know what the rest of the season could bring and it was a really good win, at another deserved win. Brentford are the only team Bournemouth never beaten in the Premier League and that record will remain for another season. So that will do for today.

international break now so there'll be no episodes in the immediate future we will be back in a couple of weeks ahead of our game against Newcastle as I mentioned as we approach the final run-in to the end of the season until then from myself thank you very much for being with me
