Introduction and Podcast Goals

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford podcast with myself Daniel where today we'll be looking ahead after a long time away to our longest trip of the season as we head to Newcastle, the newly crowned Carabao Cup winners on Wednesday evening whilst also chasing a sixth away win on the road.
00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network

Global Sports Podcast Network
So of let's get stuck straight into

Brentford's Season Ambitions

00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
it. It's been a long time away. It feels like forever since Brentford last played, obviously with being the international break and then the weekend off with the FA Cup fixtures coming in. So, you know, we should be fresh for this one. We've got plenty of games coming up in the next few months. You know, that this is a final countdown now um in, you know, in less than two months time we'll be finished. um And this is what we've been preparing for, that the that the players that have been fit should be fresh.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um obviously i know a few of them went away for internationals obviously had this weekend off as well so looking forward to it let's see what we can do i still think getting into europe is unlikely but we we've got to be in it to win it and we're in the area of the table where if we did string three or four wins together we'd be in with a chance Given our fixtures, starting with Newcastle away, followed by Chelsea at home, which I think is a little bit easier than it might have been a few months ago. But they are still difficult games and it would be a statement, I think, if we were to get um any kind of result here for this one away at Newcastle.

Player Updates and Expectations

00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, regarding the team news, the break has allowed rumours to circulate about Michael Coyote and Rico Henry, who both seem to be in contention to be in the squad.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would probably expect both them to be on the bench, I think, for Rico Henry especially. And when um Aaron Hickey comes back, the same applies to him. I think it's about getting them ready for next season, um making sure they have...
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
a full pre-season in the summer and they're up to speed and ready and back to something like they were for the start of next season. I think any minutes that they get between now and the end of this season is a bonus. I'd love to see Ruka Henry start a game. I'd love to see Aaron Hickey start a game as well. but I think we just need to reserve judgment on that. And I think with Ruka Henry especially, he's already been back once and he's had a setback again. i think we are going to manage him very, very carefully. And I don't expect to see him for too long.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And even if he is on the bench, probably not at all, maybe here. Obviously, this is the scene of where he got injured in the first place. um just about a year and a half ago now.
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Of course, it was Newcastle away um and he returns there if he's on the bench on Wednesday night. Michael Coyote, obviously not been out for so long.
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would like to see him start a game soon. and Definitely before the end of the season. i would like to see what he can do, I think, especially if it is starting to look like we don't have too much to play for this season.
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would like to see Coyote from the start. I think he is a more exciting option in terms of going forward. I don't think from Aya that we've seen the... Same kind of driving runs from right back that we perhaps did in the early part of the season before he got injured.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I'd like to see Coyote in there. You know, he's a natural right back. and The only one alongside Aaron Hickey, who who we're probably not going to see just yet. so I would put him in there, I think, with with his long throw. He offers a lot going forward. He probably offers more than, certainly more than all our other right backs. You know, you can argue Key Lewis Potter ah offers quite a lot going forward as well. But with his pace, his power, his ability to um take long throws, um and hopefully now the fact he spent, you know, a good couple of months now with with the first team,
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully he has learnt more of the defensive side of the game, positioning side of the game, when to go, when to sit back. um And I would just like to see him start, I think, instead of Christopher Ayer, but I'm not sure we'll do it here.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this is a difficult challenge. It would be a difficult first Premier League start to come into St James' part. So maybe and hopefully we will at least see him start a game in the next few weeks.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just wanted to mention Mikael Damsgaard seemed to be missing um from the sales bench in, I believe, both of Denmark's international games.

Defensive Strategies

00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I saw somewhere and it being reported that he was missing through illness.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's one to keep um an eye out ah of eye out for, I think. If it is Nillness, that's positive in in many ways. It means he's not physically injured. um He hasn't done any damage, which will keep him out for a certain amount of time. So hopefully we'll see him back straight in for this one.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But it's something to just be aware of. And of course, we'll cover that more if it does transpire that Mikhail Damsgaard will be missing for this one. um Vandenberg, he came back prior to the international break, started on the bench in the last game. I think I would put him back in the side here alongside Nathan Collins. um I think him and Collins are the future of our of our um centre-back pairing. I liked how they worked together um prior to Vandenberg getting injured.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And with Pinnaker, I just think there are some signs...
00:06:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
of him slowing down at times this season. I think the last couple of games he's been a little bit better than he was in that Everton game, but I think there are some early signs of him perhaps starting to slow down. So I think get Vandenberg in alongside Collins, give them as much experience this season together as possible going into next season and and

Midfield Tactics vs Newcastle

00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
keep Pinnock around. Of course, I would keep Pinnock around, but I think maybe more of the Ben Miwell for him next season being the third or fourth choice centre-back.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yen out over Jensen in midfield, I probably would say so. um For a game like this against a very physical, demanding midfield free, which Newcastle have themselves with Tonali, Bruno and Joe Linton, I think we need and physical midfielders in there. We need battlers in there.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it will be a challenge, a real challenge to get control of the midfield in this game. So I start Yen out alongside Norgard and obviously you sign this new contract. And I would consider dropping Kevin Sharder, I think. And I would consider getting Jensen in there as well um and and having Dam's guard in that more of a free role. I think if you compact that made midfield with one extra player against the midfield that Newcastle have...
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i think it's one of the most challenging midfield freeze to play against in the premier league and they're so combative they're so physical they will easily overrun you um if you let them so i think having maybe that extra midfielder having you know norguard jensen and dams guard who could all drop in there and work um it might work in our favor um in terms of overing ah outnumbering them slightly if we're not able to out-muscle them individually. So i would like to see that. I think Shada, sometimes in these bigger games, if we don't get the ball into him as much as we want, has a tendency to go missing, as does the likes of Brian and Bumo. So I'm not just putting Shada into that box, but I think maybe we just need a bit more muscle in midfield for this one. And and and then Kevin Shada, if he's on the bench, what a great option to bring on with 20, 30 minutes to go. And it's an option on the bench that we haven't had.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
in recent weeks um with Carvalho being out and with no other real attacking options um on the bench. So that would be a good option on the bench alongside the likes of Coyote, Pinnick, Enrico Henry, potentially.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um which is a start given our bench in recent weeks. That's definitely a big improvement.

Newcastle's Form and Key Players

00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lecking to Newcastle then. They come into this well on a massive high.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anthony Gordon, though, serves his last game, the last game of his suspension. Although he did get injured for England on international duty anyway. Lewis Hall, I think he's done very well at full-back, very well left-back. I thought he would definitely have got into the England squad um in the international break, just gone if it wasn't for injury. So he'll be out for the rest of the season.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Having said that, Alexander Izak up front is one of the best strikers in the world right now. I think we'll be in demand in the summer. I think it'll be difficult for anyone to prize him away from Newcastle as well.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's one of the best strikers in the world. You do worry a little bit for Pinnock if he is to go up with someone like, like Izak with his pace as well. ah But I think on his days, that can terrorise any defence. So we've got to be really, really careful about him.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like I said, the midfield three of Joe Linton, Bruno Tonali speak for themselves. They're formidable. One of the most challenging um in the Premier League, possibly the best midfield three in the Premier League.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then at the back, you've got Dan Bird. He's had a very good couple of weeks scoring at Wembley, making his England debut. And he will most definitely be a target at set pieces, which we need to look out for.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then, after the break, I will be looking back at our previous meetings with Newcastle and try to work out how it's likely to pan out on this occasion.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast as we hit the running stage of the Premier League. No more international breaks now. It's a fight to the finish. Not too much to play for for Brentford but possible um if we can go on a run in the next three or four weeks.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
A possibility to change all that and to um have potentially European football on the horizon for the first time in our history. So it's Very big goal.

Historical Performance Against Newcastle

00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it will be a massive achievement, um an unexpected achievement from my point of view, but I would absolutely love it if we can make it happen. and We're going to have to do something that we haven't done yet in the Premier League, though, if we are to get a good result here.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've only taken one point from St. James' Park in the Premier League, which was a 3-3 draw in November 2021, which I believe may have been Eddie Howe's first game for Newcastle.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
We lost five one as well at Newcastle in October 2022, which remains our heaviest Premier League defeat. So we do not have the best record against Newcastle.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Indeed, we had no wins at home against them either, until December this season, when girls from Bermuda, Wissler, Collins and Sharder still had a 4-2 win and completed the set of Brentford having beaten every Premier League side which we faced.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that was potentially our best performance this season. If you if you consider the level of opposition that we face today, um and, you know, managing to score four goals. I remember the first half being quite even. Perhaps Newcastle edge the first half. We're a bit lucky to go in level, but I think second half, we really controlled that game, and that was a game where the likes of Igor Thiago started. Fabio Carvalho started that game.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
which I think is often forgotten about. And and it was ah it was a really, really good victory. And like like I've said multiple times in this podcast, what we haven't done enough this season and is get those results against top teams to get us into that real top six, top seven battle.
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah What I think we have done well is beating the teams, you know, a bit lower down, perhaps that we should beat. um And that's ultimately where we are in the league. And I think if we are...
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
to push on and we're within touching distance a little bit now after that victory against Bournemouth. I think we need to back out of another win here and perhaps another win on Saturday um against Chelsea too. So,
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's always a chance. I think it'll be very difficult. I think we'll have to replicate our best performance of the season um to do that. And I think it will be a bigger challenge to do it at St. James' Park, but you never know. um And we'll see what happens. Newcastle then, our sixth in the Premier League.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
They are two points off the top four of a game in hand, so they definitely still have something to play for. They have big Champions League ambitions after missing out and not being in the Champions League this season.
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They will be on a massive high after winning their first major trophies in his 1955. You can imagine the trophy being paraded around before the game. The atmosphere was always pretty good at St. James's Park, but i can imagine it'll be amazing on this occasion.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
The away end, of course, is up high in the gods at St. James's Park. It's difficult for the away fans to make an impact on the game, not least on a Wednesday evening. I'm not sure if Brentford of are going to set out their allocation.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah given it such a long way to go on a Wednesday evening. And we've already

Match Predictions and Conclusion

00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
been to Newcastle once this season ah in midweek um in the League Cup. So I think it will be difficult.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
it it It will be a very difficult place to go. i think yeah that can't be underestimated. and i said it before the Bournemouth game, you know, we we we will find Bournemouth a much easier place to go than and Newcastle just because of, you know, how close the away fans are to the picture at Bournemouth.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
size the stadium, just the difference. And, you know, Newcastle fans are very, very good fans. And after what they've been for in the last couple of weeks, you can imagine it'll be truly buzzing on Wednesday night.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if Brentford are to get anything out the game, I think we've got to really defend well. We've got to be strong physically and mentally. I think the midfield battle, as I said, will be crucial. We will need to work very hard to match those three in midfield.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, Perhaps we need the extra man in there, like I said, with Jensen perhaps coming into the side. Even the wide players, the and unglamorous players, the likes of Jacob Murphy have been very, very good this season. They're hardworking players.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Harvey Barnes, who who may come in for Anthony Gordon, is certainly not a bad replacement. so I think it will be very, very difficult for us. And I think if we're not careful, you can see us being overrun on the back foot if we're not careful. I think if we do concede, we've got to respond in the right way. i think mrs is e this could easily be a game where you see us concede one and then concede a second two or three minutes later. We've got to manage periods of the game, particularly when Newcastle on top.
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got to be a bit more streetwise and we've got to just get through periods of the game, even if it's not always ideally how we want to play. And I think it will be, um that will go a long way, I think, to to how well we'll do here, because I think there will be periods where Newcastle,
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
inevitably, we'll be on top. um As always, what I will say is that if if we can get... ah If we're able to counter with some regularity, if we're able to get the ball forwards, if we, you know, do battle them in the midfield um and don't let them have it all our way, all their way, sorry, I do back us to score. If you get the likes of Whistler and Bumoe Dam's going in dangerous positions...
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're back Dam's guard to do something that no one else sees. You're back Wistler to finish a chance off. You're back Mbouma at times to to produce moments of magic. And I think he's due a performance, especially Brian Mbouma. don't think he's been at his strongest in the last few weeks. But again, there's there's no reason why he can't turn up and play well here, potentially for a team that might look to be signing him in the summer. I think Newcastle definitely in that conversation.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Can we make a statement? Can those front three really make the difference? I think That is something that we look to. And again, that's something that made a real big impact in the 4-2 victory early this season.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then prediction time. I am going to go 2-1 Newcastle. It's not too often in recent weeks. I predicted us not to win the game, but or or not even to draw the game.
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I think we might even score first here, but I think ultimately they will be too strong for us. I'd like to think we'll give them a good game.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we'll be absolutely blown away. um but just given everything around the club right now, given the fact that they've had a bit of time off as well, they didn't play at the weekend either. Um, and they've got champions league ambitions, you know, maybe we can hope that they, that they've still been partying a bit too much and they've taken their eye off the premier league a bit, but I just can't really see it. Um, with with their aims and ambitions.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think winning the Carabao cup will only drive them onto one more. So, um, I do think it will be a difficult evening. um And I hope I'm wrong, but but we'll see how it turns out Wednesday night, I think, for Brentford.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will go for Brian and Brimo Goldust because I think he is due one. But, um yeah, that is my prediction. And that will do for today's podcast. Thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford podcast.
00:19:37
