Zach Sheets: Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast, podcast of the week of June 22nd, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
Chris Prime: your co-host, Chris.
Zach Sheets: And this week we are taking a flight with Supergirl and talking about the 1984 DC movie, because if you're hearing this, there is a brand new Supergirl movie in theaters, the the new DC Universe movie, which is definitely more comic accurate than the 84 movie, or it seems like it's it's going to be.
Chris Prime: Or least better modern interpretation of Supergirl. Because I don't know how many times I rebooted Supergirl, like, origin stories in the comic up until that point.
Zach Sheets: Well, this was i mean this was a year before she was dead in the comics. So we were like... it like It wasn't a lot Supergirl stuff after this until like guess to the yeah they rebooted and did a bunch of stuff. but And then the whole kind of Superman franchise was kind of like on the downward swing when this movie came out. because we had It was the year after Superman 3.
Zach Sheets: And then i think that that movie combined with this movie caused... the Selkines, who were the producers of the Christopher Reeve series to sell the rights to canon films. Then we got Quest for Peace, the final nail in the coffin.
Zach Sheets: And yeah, this movie was a deaf underperformed, to say the least. It was definitely did not get really good reviews when it came out.
Chris Prime: And it's not like hate for being something geared towards nerds, because that was something big in the era where if it was geared towards comic book fans and, you know, it wasn't, had i don't know, classic literature interpretation or some big melodrama.
Chris Prime: Because in this era of filmmaking, it was just... Movies were, like, dramatic, you know? Every movie was either going to be... Especially in 84, like, it was either going to be... Somewhere in the, like, Godfather category.
Chris Prime: Or it's going to be Ghostbusters.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Like, you know, like something where it still was, like, funny, but, like, still, like, meant for... Like, it... Didn't know like the audience. Ghostbusters was really meant for adults, but like kids loved it. you know And then, if you think about this movie, this movie should be geared towards kids, and it is, but there wasn't any like wink and nod for adults to kind of like, okay, hey, you know i can I can take my kid to see this.
Zach Sheets: And actually, there's a lot of like superhero stuff in it.
Chris Prime: But it...
Zach Sheets: It's like 80% like a
Chris Prime: Oh, no.
Zach Sheets: like high school comedy
Chris Prime: But then here's the thing. I know I just mentioned that there is like a like a wink and nod for people. This movie is like, hey, did you like all the pranks from Porky's?
Chris Prime: We're going to feature some of those in a way.
Chris Prime: OK, so like i I don't think you've seen Porky's. I can even laugh or anything. So I'm like, did you see Porky's?
Zach Sheets: um've ever I've only seen like clips of I've never seen the whole movie.
Chris Prime: OK, so. It doesn't hold up. Let me tell you that. But if you go watch Porky's, watch the first Porky's, and then you see this movie right after, it is as if they were like, hey, let's make a Supergirl's Porky's movie.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: And it's like wildly inappropriate. I say that because when they do the the prank in the shower, that is like a Porky's thing.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: So. Yeah, I mean, again, Porky's does not age well. But the fact that it's got like hijinks and then this movie has high school hijinks also.
Chris Prime: And I'm like, what is going on? Why is this Supergirl movie?
Zach Sheets: Well, what's weird is like, they have, they introduce like these bully characters and then they're in like two scenes and that's it. They just drop them, which is like kind of a trademark in this movie that they just introduce things and drop them.
Chris Prime: Well, again, if you see Porky's, you get what I mean.
Zach Sheets: It's like,
Chris Prime: Like, they just was like, hey, let's just make a Porky's thing where we have, like, antagonists, but then it's like, wait a minute, we don't know what to do anymore. So, let's introduce the witch.
Zach Sheets: Yep. yeah
Chris Prime: But yeah, I'm not even sure if, like, you had to be a Supergirl fan to enjoy this movie, because it, like, disrespects that completely. Like, I feel like If you've never seen Supergirl, this is not the best way. if you have an idea of what a Supergirl origin story is, this is not either like a any kind of like justice to like introducing this in the cinema.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I think there's only like a couple things that are really from the comics, like Argo City. which But i don't think I don't think Argo City is in like a weird other dimension. I think it's just like it's floating in space in the comics. And also, her alter ego, Linda Lee, is from the comics.
Chris Prime: I mean, I get that. I get that having the alter ego. I guess the like Argo City, that makes sense. Like, you just need to know that it's not on Earth. She's an alien.
Chris Prime: I actually don't even think in this movie they explain that Krypton explode.
Zach Sheets: Oh, no...
Chris Prime: It's just like, oh, no, it's Argo City. It's like, OK, so where's this? it's like.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, no one in Argo City mentions Krypton at all, or like the destruction of Krypton, or like... but the But then they sum up but somehow they know about Superman, and they know like what he's doing on Earth.
Chris Prime: That she's Kryptonian? Nothing.
Zach Sheets: It's like, oh, my cousin on Earth, Superman? And like Zoltar, Peter O'Toole, knows about Earth things, like trees and horses and stuff like that.
Zach Sheets: He's like, i would I'd love to go visit Earth one day.
Chris Prime: Oh yeah, that she does kind of mention that. And then she gets her dream right there and then.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: Like this this intro like wildly brings up a lot of like what ifs. like Or like or why. It's like how does this city sustain itself?
Chris Prime: Is this beautiful crystal city like training for anything or they just kind of every day just enjoying space like i they they really don't go into uh the city and then it's just like oh no you could just play on the floor occasionally like an architect shows up with like the power source and messes around with it you know like and then like nothing's locked you know
Zach Sheets: du The entire city is powered by a magical orb called the Omega Hedron.
Zach Sheets: But then Pyrrha Tulloch is like, oh, I powered it. I powered it to like power my magic wand to make a tree and play around with things.
Chris Prime: And show the young girl some tricks. and I don't know. like I just feel like Peter O'Toole's character Zoltar was looking to get exiled. like He was looking for ways to get banned.
Zach Sheets: Yep. Yeah, because he's like immediately like, he's just like, oh, well, I but i gotta banish myself to the Phantom Zone. so don't Don't talk me out of it. I'm going to the Phantom Zone.
Chris Prime: It's like the Phantom Zone secretly is like an awesome place. He just doesn't want anyone else to follow him.
Zach Sheets: go see my old buddy Zod.
Chris Prime: Well, did they get... Is this the same Phantazone as Zod's Phantom Zone?
Zach Sheets: I mean, I think it's in the continuity of the Christopher Reeve movies, so I'm assuming... Did they get sent back to the Phantom Zone at the end of 2? Like, they got sent back... Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Oh, no, no. There's a two where it's like, depending on which cut, there's a one where like they get arrested because they get depowered, so then they're just arrested by regular humans. And then...
Chris Prime: think that's it. Yeah, only they get like thrown back in the thing, right?
Zach Sheets: Yeah. I mean, that was the first one, that yeah, they got sent to the Phantom Zone, and then the two, they escaped, and then they got, like, you know, defeated. But they, like, fall into a pit or something, or in, like, a crack in the earth.
Chris Prime: Right, and that's that's where like the director's cut kind of includes the extra scene the film scene where they get arrested.
Chris Prime: Which, I don't know what, like, Arctic police show up there. But, don't worry about that. This is somehow worse. like Like, this movie, just as if it was written by people that never, like, understood supernatural things. Like, they had an idea about magic. They really leaned into, like, the magic more than the sci-fi parts.
Zach Sheets: Which, they kind they kind of like fell into... Or if they had no known more about comics, they would have realized like they had like the perfect... Because one of Superman's weaknesses is magic. so that but It's like kind of like the perfect foil to Supergirl. It's like, oh, this witch.
Zach Sheets: But then they...
Chris Prime: I agree. I'm um'm like, I think that's an accident. didn't think they knew that. They were just like, oh.
Zach Sheets: they yeah none None of them knew that. None of them knew that at all. none No one read the comics.
Chris Prime: Because it is used incorrectly, like of the magic.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: It's not it's even like, okay, hey, I can bind your physical form. I could strip you of power. I could put you in a different, like a Doctor Strange like realm where like the radiation from the Earth's sun has no effect on you.
Chris Prime: gone like that is a complete like lucky break for the selena because because even then she her thing was i'm just gonna send you to the phantom zone because that's what the box says
Zach Sheets: like somehow but one of my magic spells knows about this kryptonian prison dimension
Chris Prime: which i never like i just don't understand how the the omega hedron makes her more powerful because of that. Like, I get that. It's like, okay, it's an energy source. So it amplifies whatever, like, power she has already.
Chris Prime: But then she comes up with, like, new stuff that I can't, we can't figure out, like, where did that come from?
Zach Sheets: Well, sometimes she's using spells that are in like these spell books she has, but the other time she's is making up shit. she's just like, this this rhymes. this This is a spell that I'm making up right now. Hopefully it works.
Chris Prime: Yeah, and it's like, are you just conjuring things and seeing if it, like, connects?
Chris Prime: i don't know. Like, if if she were little more, like, lackadaisical of a character, where it's like if a friend became more powerful, like, that would make sense for a character like that, who was sort of like a rogue, like, witch who...
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: like untrained, doesn't really have a plan, just sort of doing things because now they've always, they always were, like, bullied, and now they have power. Like, that's a classic villain arc.
Chris Prime: This was, she just jumps ship to ship to build an empire, but, like, it doesn't make sense what she has going on. Like, what whatever, like, structure. I mean, she's obviously terrible at business. She lives in a fun house that's, like,
Zach Sheets: Abandoned theme park? Like abandoned like carnival?
Chris Prime: Yeah, but like it's for sale, but like she hasn't figured out to just become a like a like a carnival owner just like powered by magic. at You know, like there are so much more opportunities doing other things than trying to, I don't know, woo a handsome handyman.
Chris Prime: And I hear you have.
Zach Sheets: I do love, I love, there's a bit where they they they claim out their bills, like it's like, we got so many bills to pay, and then but like later you find out like they like dear all the power to the park is still running, they're like running like the dark ride they live in, like constantly.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's like, okay, so you're paying for like a carnival electric electric bill? Because you don't pay for just one building. You have to pay for the whole like structure. So you're paying for a carnival.
Zach Sheets: And all the rides are like, you just instantly turn them back on, so they all have power going to them.
Chris Prime: Yeah, what I'm saying. Like, it's like, that's awesome. I don't understand why she starts at the carnival in the beginning. and If she was just like living out of like a trailer or her car and then gets the hedron and then takes over the carnival, that makes more sense.
Chris Prime: It's like, okay, I need to find a lair. Cool, an abandoned carnival. Great. And then like, let me convert it for my evil magic. But I get that.
Zach Sheets: I know... what do they even do like What are they even doing, though? like they're like They're not like shady fortune tellers or like anything like that.
Chris Prime: No, I think they were. So I because that's the thing about Peter. Was it like the Peter Cook's character?
Zach Sheets: Peter Cook? Nigel?
Chris Prime: He taught her magic.
Zach Sheets: Because he's a warlock? Or he knows magic?
Chris Prime: We he knows some magic, but I don't know if that's
Zach Sheets: but but But he also teaches like computer science?
Chris Prime: Well, i see, that it tells me that, like, the magic doesn't really do much to pay the bills. Like, yeah, you can conjure spells, but eventually you have to, like, pay the bill. Like, you know what I mean? Like, this, if anything, this movie was all about, like, trying obtain employment. That's why you go to school. That's why you you kind of, like, network with other people.
Chris Prime: That's why, because, oh my god, I...
Zach Sheets: you You host like Oingo Boingo like parties.
Chris Prime: yeah yeah they see Yeah, that's what I'm saying. like it It was just like a metaphor for employment seeking in the 80s, where it's like you had to throw parties, you had to network, you had to then like do party tricks so that like you you get like infamous because i bet you and this this is skipping a few scenes but when there's a scene where selena like flips a woman upside down and then like brushes her head on the floor yeah her friends are gonna be like oh so magic's real now you know and
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: or Because you never see anyone from that party again. Like you mentioned, za it's like a one and done like thing.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. I love... And Selina is also like, this is my army. These are like my minions of the dam. It's all like these like hipster freaks. It's like...
Chris Prime: Oh, it's like L.A. trash. Like 80s L.A.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: It's all the like non-trends that happen in the 80s.
Zach Sheets: Mhm.
Chris Prime: It's just like guys in leotards, punk rock aesthetics that aren't black.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Uh, like, no one's doing hard drugs, they're just sort of, like, drinking water and chit-chatting.
Zach Sheets: Like, like smoke, like, like dry ice filled drinks. Like tiki drinks.
Chris Prime: And then, yeah, tiki, their head yeah they're not even in proper tiki drinks, they're just drinking, like, foggy drinks in an abandoned carnival. It's very, like, uh, like, Andy Warhol, of like, ooh, look how sad this is, but, like, that' i'm saying like it's not, like, it it was, like,
Zach Sheets: yep
Chris Prime: the leftover parts of the art critique. our critique And Selena's just like, this is my empire.
Zach Sheets: Yes, this these people are going to help me like take over the world.
Chris Prime: These people that probably haven't had a balanced diet in a while are going to be the my minions. it's like I get if you need it an army of like sassy people to give you a better image or like hype you up. like That's a hype team.
Chris Prime: like If you haven't seen this movie, it's like the people that she is surrounding herself during that party are people in the 80s would talk her up in a magazine. it's it's No one is ready to like get out there and fight or or help her obtain more magic.
Zach Sheets: it so all all All the cool underground people of Midvale are there at the party.
Chris Prime: And that's the thing. It's like her...
Zach Sheets: this tiny This tiny town in the Midwest?
Chris Prime: her
Chris Prime: Chicagoland.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, outside of Chicago, maybe?
Chris Prime: Well, anything outside Chicago of that part of Illinois, if you're within like 35 miles of the city or so, it's Chicagoland. Which I'm like, I still can't believe they just call it Chicagoland.
Chris Prime: Up until a certain point and then you it's like too far for it to be considered Chicagoland.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, because because no one no one mentions like how far it is from Metropolis. I guess Jimmy's able to drive there or take a bus there, so it's pretty close, but...
Chris Prime: but Okay, to to give you an understanding, and the times I've been to Chicagoland, like, do you know the scene, you've seen Blues Brothers, right, Zach?
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: You know though like the jail that they he one of the brothers gets released in Joliet?
Chris Prime: Yeah. That is like 40 minutes outside of Chicago. So it's like she wasn't searching there.
Chris Prime: She was searching. i don't know, like Michigan. so it's like, where's his school?
Zach Sheets: Well, it's like she had, so Supergirl has a bracelet that Zoltar made, like he just conjured. So it's not like, it's not like it was tied to like the Omega Hydrant at all, but then somehow it it's like a tracking device.
Chris Prime: How did he know to make that bracelet to track this time?
Zach Sheets: To make a tracking device. Yeah. It's just in case.
Chris Prime: It would have been different if he already had the tracker. Oh, if I lose it here, I still got the tracker in the thing. And then it's like, it gets sucked out the window. He's like damn. And then maybe he throws it to her to take so then she can go find it.
Zach Sheets: It's like, Kara, take this tracking device. You'll find it.
Chris Prime: That makes sense. Like that adds a little tension so that when you see him again, it's like it's more impactful, but it's a
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: It's like, I really want to fix this movie and thank God they had other attempts, but if this was the only version of it, it's like, this is ripe to like reboot. From this perspective.
Chris Prime: Because like the story has all the parts, or at least some parts, to be fair. I don't want to hype this up because it does not get better than this. The rest of the movie drags on.
Chris Prime: We're just talking about like the main highlights of The like, oh, yeah, this happens and this, but then it's just like, I don't know, there's a date? Yeah,
Zach Sheets: Well, well a bit the big thing is, like, Kara doesn't... I don't know if she hears that, like, if she doesn't find the Omega Hedron in, like, a few days, like, her entire, like, family and, like, everyone she knows is going be dead because, like, they're going to lose power.
Zach Sheets: So she...
Chris Prime: yeah she's she's she's on like a joy ride right now.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, she, she like, you know, she she gets into this pod and goes... arrives in Earth. Like, it goes from, like, the inner space to outer space, which is, like, a lake, I guess. And then so i love, like, so just somehow on the way to...
Zach Sheets: earth or like through the to like the dimensions like she gets her supergirl costume somehow just manifests on her and then yeah she gets to earth and she's like oh wow i like with like a minute of getting on earth shes like understands all her powers and then starts flying around for hours and and it's just like alright you're gonna find that thing right
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and then she then she decides, like, oh, I'm gonna go, I find this, like, all-girls high school. I'm just gonna, like, go undercover there like, pretend to be Linda Lee.
Chris Prime: Which, for us, thank God this is like an 80s thing where you can just lie about being in school for a few days. Or what feels like a week? it It feels like she's there for a while.
Zach Sheets: Who knows, yeah.
Zach Sheets: well do i do I do love that like she almost does like a Peter Griffin thing with her name. of like like Because she goes to the headmaster, like Mr. Danvers, and he's like, what's your name? And she's like a poster of Robert E. Lee.
Zach Sheets: she's like, uh... Linda Lee? Wouldn't it be hilarious if she's like Robert E. Lee? It's like her name.
Chris Prime: Roberta E. Lee. And then the principal just looks over and is like, okay.
Zach Sheets: Peter Griffin.
Zach Sheets: and And she like, she like, but like Nigel comes in because like you find out he's like the teacher at the school and he like is like burst in like he's like talk to Dandridge about some things and Carl is able to like forge a letter from Clark and be like, oh, hardly endorse my cousin to go to the school.
Chris Prime: Again, she's been on Earth for maybe eight hours.
Zach Sheets: I think maybe a day, because she sleeps in, like, the woods.
Chris Prime: Oh, yeah, yeah, well...
Zach Sheets: yeah After she gets, like, accosted by truckers.
Chris Prime: Oh, like, sexual assault it, more like.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Like, it is crazy that the first people she meets are just, like...
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: serial killer like truckers and then this movie's also has sponsoring by a&w of of all things so this but like if you think about it it's like so it's like the root beer company was like oh yeah use our product placement and the first one you see is like the rapist and then they're we
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Zach Sheets: Oh my god, yes. A&W's, A&W Popeyes.
Zach Sheets: Matt Frewer with an AW shirt. Just be like, oh, Supergirl.
Chris Prime: I like three things. i like I like trucks, I like root beer, and then I like assaulting women.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Even for the truckers, though, I get the first trucker doesn't know any- he gets kind of like pushed around, so he he's like, alright, well, that's not right. But the other trucker, like, alright, I saw all that, I still won't- let's fight.
Zach Sheets: I do, it like, Matt Frewer has a line where, like, Carlos is like, why are you doing this? And he's just like, this is who we are.
Chris Prime: Yeah, crazy.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: It's so like, oh, they're committed to being evil. They know they're evil. This is not like a, oh, they're drunk and like, I mean, that's still not an excuse, but it's like that, that like, okay, they think they they can be bullies because they found someone weak.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: They're not, they're not, mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: But then it's like you find a Supergirl cosplayer like it in terms of like what the girl's wearing. And they're like, they know what Superman is. The world knows what Superman is. And it's like, well, there's this girl in a Superman outfit. And they're like, yeah, let's let's go assault her.
Zach Sheets: And then, yeah, she just tosses them into, like, like a fencing and through, like, walls.
Zach Sheets: And they're just like, oh, don't tell me about this. Yeah, and
Zach Sheets: then, like, Super-Rule just, like like like, flies into the woods and sleeps in the woods.
Zach Sheets: And then discover like discovers the school. is like She basically like slept like the outfield or like right next to like the softball field for the school.
Zach Sheets: and I love the... it's It's kind of like a wolfman or like it's like like it's like a multiple phase transformation when she transfers into Linda Lee. which's like like She goes behind like four different trees and like every every time she goes behind a tree, get different like part of her costume changes.
Zach Sheets: there's a lot There's a lot of like like her like instantly changing, which, i don't know, like...
Chris Prime: or Or like instantly doing things without explaining explaining. Like, yeah, the fact that she was like, okay, a uniform.
Zach Sheets: And
Chris Prime: It's like, did you make that uniform? Do you have magic? What's going on? like And then she has stuff. So I get the clothes, but the fact that she had like an accessory bag.
Zach Sheets: it's not even like she has like the magic wand that like makes things. It's just like, she's...
Chris Prime: Well, maybe maybe she does, but the movie didn't think to think about that.
Zach Sheets: It's just like one of her powers is like she transform her appearance in her clothing.
Zach Sheets: and then and then she like learns like she she has x-ray vision and hearing later on too. that She's like, oh, I got i can do this too.
Chris Prime: Well, she like this. Yeah, she she like kind of no training does it. You know, I so i think I guess because they didn't figure out how to do that in the original Superman movies because they they time skip.
Chris Prime: And they just didn't do that. They could have at least when she's on Earth, do that one on one get used to Earth thing, like get get used to the environment besides doing acrobat tricks.
Zach Sheets: flying over, like, wild horses and through mountains and stuff.
Chris Prime: Because.
Chris Prime: And I just feel like they they like fluff too much and then when it comes to the story, they're like, eh, you get it. you know like
Zach Sheets: yeah You see Superman?
Chris Prime: It's like this, but but now a girl. it's like but they's so But she's not the same character. Superman had the kits to teach him like right from wrong.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and he had, like, a whole, like, childhood, like, learned about his powers and, like, grow them and, like, Yeah.
Chris Prime: Responsibility.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: And then, like, about love and caring about Earthlings, because it's like, I get, okay, especially when, like, in the movie version, when when this Paul Kent dies in the in this universe, Clark realizes he cares for humans. Like, you know, even though he has parents, ah'll you know, Kryptonian parents, because the Earthlings love him, you know, he cares for earth But then you get Kara, who has her parents still, who shows up to Earth. And like, she could have just been a conqueror.
Zach Sheets: Well, she's like, the first thing she does when she steps on the water is like, picks up a rock and crushes it. She's like, oh, cool. That's super strong.
Chris Prime: She should have picked up like a she just she should have done the Frankenstein monster thing where it's like she picks up a little boy, throws him into the lake. And then she's like, oh that's what death is.
Zach Sheets: But then, but yeah, there's like a bit like a big chunk of the movie, like after she like enrolls in the school, it's just like, yeah, her using her powers to like foil pranks and just like, it's like a high school mischief.
Zach Sheets: Like...
Chris Prime: I feel like it should have escalated. Like, it it shouldn't just be high school pranks. It should have been, like, she was stopping bank robberies or, like, other kind of crime that Superman was doing.
Chris Prime: And I get that it's small town, so the crime rate is lower, but, was she, she, was she and in, in, in Argyle city was, was it just like super peaceful? So no one bullied each other. No one fought each other. So it's like, she didn't know what like that was.
Zach Sheets: Probably. boy it seems like a like a utopian kind of like peaceful society.
Chris Prime: Okay.
Zach Sheets: but they just learn about like what is it? Sixth dimensional geometry or whatever it is
Chris Prime: they have Oh, I mean, they have nothing else to do but, like, study and probably figure out how to, like, land on Ergo City somewhere.
Zach Sheets: it is. Eventually leave interspace.
Zach Sheets: which but We should probably leave this like like other dimension that we're in at some point.
Chris Prime: But they only had, like, one ship, right? Like, one escape pod.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, which I think Zeltar made it. He's like, I made that. was like, this is for me to like leave and go to Earth one day.
Chris Prime: Again, Zoltar just seems like very weird, right?
Zach Sheets: let's leave all of you.
Chris Prime: As a character. He just like makes his place. He wants to leave. and wants explore space.
Zach Sheets: He seems very bored. with Like, he made Argo City or like helped create it. And he's just like, well, I'm bored this place now. I just want to leave.
Chris Prime: You know, there should have been another thing where Zoltar was like a like a delusional god. Where he like the the power of like creating things has gone made him a little mad.
Chris Prime: where it's It's like the Doctor Manhattan thing. Where it's like you're you're bored of this kind of living. Because like nothing like nothing can stop you from creating.
Chris Prime: So there's no limitations. And then it's like, well, I seek like a challenge or I seek a different plane of existence. And the movie just like had a great actor of that Peter O'Toole is like a good actor.
Chris Prime: It's just that that comes across as like a very like. Bored scientists. That just I don't know, i want to leave, but I also want to like.
Chris Prime: I don't know, see Venus. I think he said he said like Saturn.
Zach Sheets: so or Saturn, yeah.
Chris Prime: So like he's aware of that somehow. He knows that constellation.
Zach Sheets: yeah he know Yeah, he knows like our solar system.
Chris Prime: Even though it's like light years away between whatever like Krypton was to Earth, but even where they're the pocket dimension is just like a mystery in space of like where how far that is.
Chris Prime: And they do mention that the travel between Kara leaving and coming to Earth is, like, different. And then Kara might mature over time or something. like so She'll change.
Zach Sheets: Her father's like, well, think, is it because of the radiation? like that Like, whatever radiation she's going through is like, transforming her?
Chris Prime: I don't know. The CG in this movie is just...
Zach Sheets: not CG.
Chris Prime: Well, whatever, like, graphics...
Zach Sheets: It's like, yeah, it's all, like, in camera, like, blue screen. you eighty s blue screen
Zach Sheets: Yeah, i think I think it's like when she's like traveling through like the psychedelic like like lava looking liquidy stuff, like that's like supposed be like radiation and and that's how I guess that's how she gets her costume too, is like that that gives her a costume somehow.
Zach Sheets: And then she bursts out like...
Chris Prime: Yeah, I don't like that. i As a comic book person, that's BS, where instantly you bust out and i'm she's wearing the like tailored outfit.
Chris Prime: that's just like
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: So is that the radiation? It changes your gown, Kryptonian clothes into super people clothes like instantly?
Zach Sheets: I mean, it should have been that she sees like yo she sees the poster of her cousin and is like, oh, like I should like create costume like that to be like but be like my cousin. Not just to get it. be like This is what Kretonians get when you go through radiation.
Zach Sheets: Which I do love like that the poster is like the only like Christopher Reeve like imagery we get. It's like like Lucy Lane has a poster of Superman on her wall.
Chris Prime: So that's another weird thing where this movie does say that Superman is on a peace mission that is like in space.
Zach Sheets: Like millions of light years away.
Chris Prime: And it's like, this is why he's not in this movie. And only because I'm pretty sure as soon as something like this would happen, Superman would hear it and be like, oh, I need to go like check that out. like He's the only alien so far in this universe.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: And it's a shame, because I feel like there definitely should have been a connected thing. Even if they couldn't get Chris Reeds, there should have been like... Like, oh, and now i gotta go see Superman or something. Or like, you know, just some sort of like blur that goes mentioned about this.
Chris Prime: Or even other people in the movie going, hey, you have the same outfit as Superman. Like, no one says that.
Zach Sheets: but Like, Jimmy doesn't say it. like He's like, oh, it's weird that you are dressed like Superman, my my friend. Space.
Chris Prime: Yeah. And he doesn't like put two to two together. Like, oh, are you related or something? And it's just like, Oh, that's cool. Like, have an outfit. Like, almost like a carbon copy, but like, just like for tailored for her. okay Like, who's making this?
Zach Sheets: Space.
Zach Sheets: But we should probably... We gotta mention the movie's, like, the big action set piece of this movie, which is, like, Supergirl fighting, like, a runaway, like, construction vehicle.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that that scene goes on for way too long. It's like that's the first fight she has that is like a challenge.
Chris Prime: And all she does is rip the claw part off a like a digger and then flies like miles away.
Zach Sheets: Yep. Mm-hmm.
Zach Sheets: Well, it's also in motion because Selina, like, lures Ethan to like, hurt the amusement park. It's, like, trying to, like, seduce him and, like, has made, like, a love potion for him.
Zach Sheets: And then it's, like, that if the first person he sees, he'll fall, like, madly in love with. But then he, like... like what is like is like wandering around like he like wakes up in like the music park like wanders through like the dark ride and like like stumbles into town and everyone's like oh that guy's on drugs just ignore him like he's like wandering in the middle of the street but like Jimmy and Lucy are just like he's fine it' this let's go back to Popeyes
Chris Prime: The chicken's really good here. Like.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: Wait, was was that the Popeyes? or i thought they were eating at a like a diner.
Zach Sheets: No, that was definitely the Popeyes.
Chris Prime: OK.
Zach Sheets: There's Popeyes all over the place. which i felt like so like The entire town was like built for this movie. And it was all and it was it was all just like you know the like the facades, like the fake like buildings.
Chris Prime: Oh.
Zach Sheets: But then they built they actually built like a full, real Popeyes.
Chris Prime: like Like a functional Popeyes?
Zach Sheets: i don't know if it's functional, but like because you know most of those buildings are just like like an exterior, and then you don't see the interior. But the Popeyes obviously had like the full interior like tables and countertop and all that stuff.
Chris Prime: Oh, I see.
Zach Sheets: And apparently apparently that whole the whole like runaway construction vehicle scene took 22 days to shoot.
Chris Prime: I don't know why.
Zach Sheets: I guess all the chaos of like the thing just driving through buildings and sma like causing like tire fires and explosions and...
Chris Prime: I mean, you could just let it loose and film that for a day. Like, it's a fake set.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: So it's not like, oh, no, we got pay for all the damage.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: It's like last day of filming, destroy that fucking set.
Chris Prime: Just, I guess, I mean, if they want to do like stunts, but I don't know, was the only stunt like putting Lucy Lane in the cabin and
Zach Sheets: She, like, jumped right... She runs up to, like, like i climbs the cab and instant instantly gets knocked out.
Chris Prime: Yeah, and it's like, did that take a week of filming?
Zach Sheets: And also, like somehow, like Ethan like doesn't see anyone until he like sees Kara. and they's are like And he's like, oh, I love you now.
Chris Prime: Okay, so let's go back.
Zach Sheets: or like Linda, yeah.
Chris Prime: Let's go back, though. So, Selina drugs Ethan, and then she's like, okay, this spell takes like an hour to work, but he just wanders off.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, like it knocks him unconscious, and she's like, well, when he wakes up, the first bru like I'll be there, and then like he'll see me, and then he'll fall madly love with me for a day.
Zach Sheets: Or until like there's like a was it it's say a walnut with like a spider in it. If the spider like gets out of the walnut, then the spell is broken or something.
Zach Sheets: Because Nigel...
Chris Prime: Well, that's Nigel breaks the walnut and then that's like, you know, the thing that lets Ethan wake up and then wander around.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Well, that's that's later. like he like He wakes up.
Chris Prime: yeah.
Zach Sheets: like The spell initially knocks him out, and then wakes up, and he's like stumbling through like like the dark ride, like the haunted house ride, and like stumbles into town, and then doesn't see anyone to like fall in love with until he sees Kara slash Linda. And and that's the whole that's like that's kind of the whole thing of Selina just like, Damn that supergirl!
Zach Sheets: She stole my man!
Chris Prime: Yeah, she's like butthurt that this like beautiful handyman wasn't hers. But she has the power of like, you know, like a god too.
Zach Sheets: I appreciate, did isn't the first thing she does, like, Selena, like, is, like, give herself immortality? And apparently it worked. She's just like, oh, I'm immortal now. Okay.
Chris Prime: i don't know. It's like, okay, you just declare. I don't know if she just declared it or she tested it
Zach Sheets: she yeah she but She, like, made up a spell about immortality, and she's like, well, that worked. Okay.
Chris Prime: Well, there should have been a thing where something fell on her or, you know, during a fight with Supergirl, like an accident happens and the mortality thing actually works.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: I just feel like it's a just miss story element. then don't I brush that off.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: I did not notice that she was like immortal, apparently.
Zach Sheets: yeah because it's like because when the omega hedron like falls into like they're like her nigel's picnic and she like picks it up she's like oh this is powerful let me try something she's like make me immortal and then she's like oh okay i'm a world now bye nigel i don't need you anymore
Zach Sheets: which yeah Which is just like a lot of like her spells just like her like declaring things or saying things. There's only one or two times where she actually like is following an actual like spell or putting ingredients together.
Zach Sheets: but then But then that seems like she doesn't need the Omega Hadron because it's in like the box that like keeps it from like like locked away. So it's like it's like not helping her spells.
Zach Sheets: Because it only works when she takes out of the box.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I guess it's like that's the. The like rule with it, have keep it hidden and then it's like, all right, well, when I want to wish have to like peek at the box.
Chris Prime: Like a powerful wish.
Zach Sheets: but take care But it takes for a while to be like, oh, I should like have it out of the box because then it were actually works. It does things for me.
Chris Prime: It doesn't even like. Can she just hold the hedron too? And then that makes her powerful like she but like she just keeps it in a box, right?
Zach Sheets: I think so, yeah.
Chris Prime: it's just all right. Like and then it's like it's just the idea that it's in her box makes her powerful wherever she goes.
Zach Sheets: but then But then the big thing is that Nigel brings like that like evil magic wand, and then that's like when Selena's finally like, oh, now I have both these things. Now I can actually like really do some like evil things.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's like the wand didn't help. I don't know why Nigel was just like, all right, like I got to fight this sorceress now. i should just try to woo her first. I should try to like sweet talk her.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Zach Sheets: She's like, well, you know, if you show me how to use this, Nigel, you could have me. She's like, well, I got your wand. I'm going to give you, like, boils and make you like a ghoul send you into the streets.
Zach Sheets: And then she, like, turns amusement park into a mountain, and like a mountain fortress.
Chris Prime: And it's not like her friend also has magic. I feel like every day that friend has scale that mountain down.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, how do you, like, there's no, like, stairs or, like, it doesn there's not really a way to like, get up and down, it it seems like. It's just like, all right. Yeah, we're stuck up here now.
Chris Prime: You live here now?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and, like, Selena's friend, Bianca, it's kind of just like, she's just like a like a commentator or, like, the audience just like, she just, like, is, like, says what the audience is thinking or, like, making these, like, comments on the side.
Chris Prime: I get it that they were trying to do that... Like, the... Lex Luthor and whatever her... Like, the, the like, comedy duo.
Zach Sheets: like miss te like Miss Test Mocker and like Ned Beatty.
Chris Prime: Yeah, yeah. Like, they kind of combined them together. it's like, they were all... But, like, least Miss Tessmacher was... Like she had a heart. She did that thing where she's she sort of like realized how bad it's going to be.
Chris Prime: And I thought her f friend was going to do that same thing. But her friend just sort of just like stands there. like All right. What now?
Zach Sheets: umm I'm just watching. i'm just watching all this. Yeah, she like she, like, never tries to get any sort of, like, power for herself. like try like could i She's like, can I use that? if Like, can I get some magic going on? She's just like, yeah, you use it. I'll just, ill just like, comment it. I'll, like, sit off the side and, like, make snide comments about it.
Zach Sheets: But then she ultimately, like, like she, like, gets, like, comeuppance even though she didn't really do much or anything. Like, they both get the comeuppance.
Chris Prime: Yeah. She just got, like so just by proxy, just like sucked into the Supergirl tornado, which i don't even know how she figured to do like supersonic speed to suck in everyone and a demon that is apparently like huge, but we never see it full scale. Because obviously it's like a hand puppet. Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Oh, God. that the The scenes where Supergirl is getting like pulled in its hands is so bad.
Chris Prime: Like, okay, so I saw this movie on, like, cable TV, just like a Sunday movie weekend thing, too. And I remember, like, the first time I saw this movie, very vividly, because I was, like, sick.
Chris Prime: I was, like, ill watching this, and I remember watching that scene, and it gave me, like, a headache.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: I was already not doing great, and then watching that, I was like, oh, like, what?
Zach Sheets: Well, because it because it's like, it's like, this it's like distorting. it's It's like wavy. And then it's like, like, she's like, it's like, yeah.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it gave me like motion sickness that scene when I was a kid. So I always thought that maybe I just didn't understand it.
Zach Sheets: Mm.
Chris Prime: My brain just like didn't comprehend what I was watching. I was like, that that couldn't be it. like And then now as an older, you know, now I'm older. I'm like, oh they just didn't know how to do a like.
Chris Prime: Like a scene where a monster holds her.
Zach Sheets: they didn't Yeah, they didn't have giant hands to put Helen Slater in. There's, like, well, blue screener onto, like, the puppet in the background and kind of like, just, like, make it, like, look wavy.
Zach Sheets: and That's, like, her, like, getting pulled pulled apart.
Chris Prime: weve Yeah. and We'll like twist the image and then we'll do like distortion with color grade on the the film.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris Prime: And I was like, this this is not good either. like i like i thought about like when I was young when i first saw this movie. I just didn't understand when I was watching. And then, you know, it's like, in those moments as a kid, you think that you're like, you know, you just didn't understand the world or like, you you might think, oh, you might doubt yourself.
Chris Prime: Nope. Turns out I was right. I was like, oh oh no. Like Supergirl, I think is the first movie I saw and I just did not like it. You know, like it's, it's just like one of those first movies you see and you're just like, yeah, you're like, oh no.
Zach Sheets: You're like like, oh, movies can be bad.
Chris Prime: Like, but this is a movie why i didn't rent it. I only who watched it on TV whenever it was on. It's like, okay, I'll give it a shot. Or it's like, it's Supergirl. Okay, I'll watch it again. Maybe this time it'll get better. Maybe I'll notice something I didn't before. like Something like that. you know
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: And now with like... The fact that you can just like rent a movie for longer, and it's not like back in the day when you rented a movie, you had to return... like If this was like a really popular movie, we gotta explain this to younger people, that like you only had two days to watch it before we had to return that movie.
Chris Prime: So that's why The Weeknd was where you counted the most, because you could like spend the most time watching it and re-watch it. At most, you can re-watch a movie maybe three times before return it.
Chris Prime: that's That's a lot, given that, like, you you have to sit there, rewind it, and watch it again, like and maybe give yourself, like, a break, and then watch it again. You know, like... But back then, people used to watch the same movie, like, over and over, because it was, like, this or nothing.
Zach Sheets: Or they were on HBO all the time. You just caught it there or something. they were like You said like on cable. like
Chris Prime: Well, yeah, the cables, the schedule was, like, okay, well, they got the rights to movie, so every, like, hour, every... whatever day yeah it's gonna be on for this hour so it's just gonna be playing so catch it in parts you know the parts you've missed or like because you can't pause so it's like you just if you miss this like catch it again or stop watching and watch it again like tomorrow so i did that like i remember like okay well super bowl's on i always missed the beginning and then i watched it again you know i was like oh i caught it and i was like oh this still didn't make the experience any better
Zach Sheets: Like a couple days. Yeah.
Chris Prime: And then I think maybe, did we watch this in college, Zach? don't think so, right? Like, we we knew about it, but it was like, not like, hey, you to watch Supergirl?
Zach Sheets: I don't think, no. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: yeah, I just haven't thought about it until we're like, let's go watch it again now. And yeah, it just, the like story structure and and just sort of like, oh, they just ran out of money. Like,
Chris Prime: or for If you told me that like a ragtag group of people put this movie on for like really cheap, it's like, wow, this is an amazing, low-budget movie. you It's admirable, right?
Chris Prime: But this movie has way too many big-name stars. like Not every one this movies is a nobody. like A good amount of people have roles before this, or they went on to do other similar things.
Chris Prime: But, yeah, this movie, like, Something like, what, $14 million or something that went into this movie?
Zach Sheets: Well, it was it cost $35 million and it made $14 million.
Chris Prime: Oh my god. See, like, $35 million in 1984 is like $100 million now.
Zach Sheets: so Something do like that, yeah.
Chris Prime: Maybe maybe like $80 million. But
Chris Prime: it's like it does not feel like that. like it This feels like a tax scam. Like, that's why it's like it was so right for Canon to swoop in because it's like, oh, they they know how to, like, stretch a dollar.
Zach Sheets: yep
Chris Prime: But this was three production companies, Tristar, Columbia and Warner.
Zach Sheets: Well,
Chris Prime: And they like like it all seems like they all try to shortcut each other.
Zach Sheets: well I think the big thing too is that the Selkines like finance the entire movement themselves. So the like the 40 million is from them.
Chris Prime: Oh, OK.
Zach Sheets: Well, the 35 million from them. And then it's like, well, we lost however many, like 15 million or 20 million dollars whatever from, like, this movie. It's like, yeah, let's sell it to the canon group. Like... Because I don't think Superman 3 did that well either.
Zach Sheets: Like, Superman 3 80 million, but it cost 40 million, so that's not really a great, like, return on your investment either.
Chris Prime: See, that's the problem where people start making movies just to be a business. And sometimes, like, I mean, we we get that effect now. like I feel like every movie franchise or trend hits that boiling point where...
Chris Prime: it's no longer about the art. It's just about like, this was bankable. So why is it not bankable now?
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: It's like, okay, well, did it elevate the art? Did it do something either in storytelling or cinematics to warrant this? And honestly, like, this is such a backstep from the previous Superman movies.
Chris Prime: in terms of like, scope, what, what like, what's at stake? And then, I don't know, effects?
Chris Prime: The fact that she fights an invisible monster for, like, but were where we skipped that, but and that's even, like, you can skip that and the movie doesn't, like, it still makes sense.
Zach Sheets: yeah Oh my god, yeah.
Chris Prime: Like, she doesn't bring up that she fought an invisible monster.
Zach Sheets: And it's, like, somehow is he able to take, like, a like a light pole and fly up through, like, a lightning storm and, like, have it absorb the lightning. And so it's, like, storing the energy and then she, like, shoots lightning at it to, like, kill it.
Chris Prime: Does she know that would work?
Zach Sheets: she she She doesn't try anything else. She doesn't try to like her heat vision or like the her breath. She's just like, oh, I know. I'll fly his light pole up and like absorb electricity. i was Obviously, it's weak to electricity. It's a shadow monster.
Zach Sheets: yeah i do i mean I do like the like kind of like budgetary like creativity of like, oh, what if we just had like a shadow monster that you can't see and we just like like smash like this like miniature set?
Zach Sheets: i mean yeah yeah i mean you You do get to see it for like a split second way before it evaporates or whatever. It's like another like weird like puppet demon.
Zach Sheets: Oh, and then we we we also didn't mention that Kara gets banished to the Phantom Zone like by Selina. She somehow knows about Kryptonian prison dimensions, so she sends Kara to like the yeah for the Phantom Zone.
Zach Sheets: And then like reunites with Zeltar, who's not like a like a drunken... like He's like it lost his mind.
Zach Sheets: well what
Chris Prime: So...
Zach Sheets: What's the... He made made like like a liquor called Squirt that he's just like this like, yeah, have some Squirt.
Chris Prime: I mean, they made squirt like a real soda.
Zach Sheets: Is that what
Zach Sheets: it I've got regular Squirt and Apple Squirt.
Chris Prime: But then he's also like carving statues.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: He's like, I made a horse. I never seen a horse, but I oh i never been to Earth, but I have a horse.
Zach Sheets: I mean, a perfectly, and it like, anatomically correct horse.
Zach Sheets: And then, but then, like like, it's like, well, there's no way out except for the one way out, which is, yeah know, like, crawl across this, fourto like, swirling vortex.
Chris Prime: vortex. Okay, so did he... Because he's like very confident of what he sees. Has he been there before?
Zach Sheets: he He knows it's like like a possible way out, but hes just never want he just didn't want to do it because it was too dangerous or something. or like he's like like He's very committed to be like, i I need to be punished for what I did. like i need to like stay here in the Phantom Zone forever.
Chris Prime: Takara, you don't want this. This... this this kind of place where you get to be alone and drunk all the time.
Zach Sheets: And then
Chris Prime: i just don't I just don't understand that, like, how he got to the Phantom Zone. So the Kryptonian, that whole group of people on, yeah, they are just going to suffocate in space there.
Zach Sheets: Argo, yeah.
Chris Prime: But, like, they can also just come to the Phantom Zone and survive.
Zach Sheets: they but Yeah, they probably they could have. I guess i mean, I guess i guess they they thought they would be trapped there, but i guess it's better than like dying in Argo with like no air or no power.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's like, it's it's a basically a rock in space, or the Phantom Zone, which has... It's just like, yeah, it's not great, but you can farm there?
Zach Sheets: Maybe. i don't
Chris Prime: Or is like, Zoltar making toilet wine, basically? Like, he's just...
Zach Sheets: i think it's I think he's basically making like yeah like prison alcohol. like he's like There's like green goo that he's turning it into... He's fermenting.
Zach Sheets: and also, Selina's able to like shoot fireballs from like Earth into the Phantom Zone. Or conjure... like a but she can like see it She can see into the Phantom Zone and shoot like spells at them.
Chris Prime: and See, that's the thing. she She summoned demon vortex, but then, like, that was already there.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. yeah
Chris Prime: so I don't think she, like, did she actually shoot things into the Phantom Zone, or she just looks into Phantom Zone?
Zach Sheets: She shot fireballs because she finds a spell that's like, oh, the Asani fireballs or something and she starts shooting them at them. And I think Sultar gets hit by one and kind of flips down little bit further down the cliff.
Chris Prime: I see.
Zach Sheets: and And then she's like, oh, here's this other one, like yeah like a demon vortex like to stop them. which it seems like it only puts a face, puts an evil face on the Vortex.
Zach Sheets: And then Zeldroth is like, I'm not going to make it Kara, but you will. And he throws himself off the cliff for no reason. He's not taking the demon with It's give Kara.
Chris Prime: No reason.
Zach Sheets: You go. yeah. Mm-hmm. i give up carra like you you go
Chris Prime: And the demon... The vortex doesn't go away. it just doesn't...
Zach Sheets: no yeah
Chris Prime: It also doesn't chase Kara, because the car was, like, right by the exit.
Chris Prime: So understand what happened. Like... If it was, like, a noble sacrifice, where it's, like, he destroyed the demon vortex so Kara can escape, I get that.
Chris Prime: If it was... He had to throw her, but at the cost of his grip, I get that too. But she was, like, already at the top.
Chris Prime: And then he was, I don't know, a foot away?
Zach Sheets: And he was like, he it it was like he was like struggling to stay on. Like he was on the cliff. He he fell a little bit, like he was still on the cliff. i guess Like he was like, oh, I can't, I'm losing my grip car. I can't hold on.
Zach Sheets: like, he like, he like, like chooses to throw himself off the cliff.
Chris Prime: He's like, sweet, this is what I wanted.
Zach Sheets: the sweet Finally, a sweet release of death.
Zach Sheets: But yeah then yeah that's but then car yeah, she's able to escape. She comes back and like we got the the the final confrontation, which apparently like Nigel tells her, oh you have you have to make Selina face the demon, like the shadow demon.
Zach Sheets: That'll stop her. so then like we So like we said, like, Kara, like, makes, like like, a cyclone, like, a speed cyclone, and like, lifts Selina up and, like, spins her around and she, like, is, like, face-to-face with the demon and then that, that like, banished, that causes her to get banished into, like, a dimension or something.
Chris Prime: Even when you're describing it is not any better than what we see. Because it's like... The the like tornado she like she makes... And the demon like just sort of like... Oh, references it? It's not like you see the demon get sucked in. It's just like, okay, well... The demon's there. She's screaming.
Chris Prime: You get it? And then... Why would the demon turn on Selina?
Chris Prime: She has look at it? And that was it? That was the like... your evil magic's over if you look at the demon?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I don't know what that does.
Chris Prime: Yeah, like, that's, like, that still doesn't make any sense. It's not like she was able to convince the demon you want Selina. She's actually powerful, so if you eat her, you know, he like, if if she tricked her, like, tricked the demon, that'd be one thing.
Chris Prime: Or even kind of like, oh,
Chris Prime: he she got Selina to shoot the demon by accident. Now the demon's mad. It's like none of that happens.
Zach Sheets: or so Or tied into the box. so she has that She has the box that keeps like growing into like big like a bigger and bigger like demonic form. like Make that be like, oh, the demon is the demon is tied to this box, and if you smash the box, then it's like it's free, and then they can like do whatever it wants, and then they can like you know kill Selina, or like take her... like I can take her soul now, or whatever. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Or like the the the pack is complete and it's like now the demon's free to take over Selena.
Chris Prime: Yeah, no, it's like super like quick to wrap up and it's a very early movie trope where the bad guy person just sort of like gets sucked into something.
Zach Sheets: yep
Chris Prime: It's not the blue beam of light in the sky, but it it's pretty close to it, where it's... The villain gets, like... I don't know, like... in something?
Zach Sheets: Are they in the Phantom Zone? like Do they get sent to the Phantom Zone? Or are they in like another dimension?
Chris Prime: Okay, so didn't Kara crash in from, like, the window?
Zach Sheets: well she first She flew up through, like she comes through like the window and then of like the when she first goes to the fortress, but then i think when she comes but like through the Phantom Zone, she like bursts through the mirror.
Chris Prime: Okay.
Zach Sheets: And then Selina and then yeah then thenlina Bianca get sent through the mirror like the shattered mirror, and then it like reforms, and then you see Kara it in the mirror.
Chris Prime: In the mirror.
Zach Sheets: So I guess they get sent to the Phantom Zone. That's only kind of explanation. That's just another weird dimension.
Chris Prime: The mirror zone? don't know.
Zach Sheets: The mirrors, yeah. Mirror Masters there now.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and then it's like, yeah, super rushed. She's like, well, I gotta go. gotta make a huge job. I'm out of here. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Well, then, like, Ethan kind of confesses his love. He's like, oh, I knew that, like, Supergirl and you were the same person. Like, Linda and Supergirl were the same person.
Chris Prime: And he even says, like, oh, I might not see you again because you gotta go save your city. Which, I don't remember Supergirl, like, saying that to him.
Zach Sheets: saying that all yeah
Chris Prime: Was it on their date?
Zach Sheets: well he he also like when the spell is like quote unquote broken he still is like oh i still love linda even though the spell is broken which oh we have we have mentioned either like it is kind of weird the age difference if if If Kara's supposed to be, like, high school age, like, if she's, like, like a high schooler, basically, then Ethan's, like, the, like, adult groundskeeper for the school.
Chris Prime: He's like easily 23, 20 something.
Zach Sheets: yeah.
Chris Prime: And Faye Dunaway is like a cougar. She's like, oh, hey, or or maybe like just like, i don't want to like really age Faye Dunaway.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: But in that moment, she's just like, oh, young blood and like all about that.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: So it's a battle between like older women versus younger women. Over like the hottest guy in this town, apparently.
Chris Prime: Like the only hot guy.
Zach Sheets: I read, and I you attributed that apparently they wanted John Travolta for that role.
Zach Sheets: Which, that makes that makes sense because they put they put Ethan in, like, Saturday Night Fever, like, suits, where he's, like, fully under control like c his control.
Chris Prime: oh
Zach Sheets: Like, he's in, like, these, like, disco suits.
Chris Prime: now that makes sense yeah yeah and it's like i get it where okay this sounds really mean but so like that kind of shows that when faye dunaway like when it's younger it was the 70s so like that was her like oh that's my ideal like sexiness because that probably is when she was like younger and that's when she found most attractive
Zach Sheets: yep
Zach Sheets: Like disco jumpsuits.
Chris Prime: I like it when a guy has to take off his jacket and his pants use the bathroom. And then...
Zach Sheets: and like a giant medallion or something.
Chris Prime: Yeah. That kind of makes total sense then. Especially if if you think about how like Superman 1 takes place in the 70s. It's like 1978, I think, Superman
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. o
Chris Prime: so It makes sense that when she finds like, ooh, someone that reminds me, like I now am powerful and I want like, you know, a pretty like companion.
Chris Prime: Yeah. Dress him the way you've got like this weird fetish for. I mean, OK, I say that is also what happens to us as we get old and we see movies with like the fashion sense is radically different from what we're used to from like what we've grown up with. So it's like, oh, wait, they're wearing that. It's like, I don't know.
Chris Prime: ballparking, they somehow go back to togas. Like, every action hero just starts wearing togas for whatever reason. Tactical togas.
Zach Sheets: Like...
Chris Prime: That's how, like, weird it is in this movie, where it's like, okay, so she's still got, like, the disco thing going on, and that, like, no one points that out in her, like, group. And then, she she amasses a army in this movie, and that they're all, like...
Chris Prime: fascists? Like, they're like suppressing any kind of like
Zach Sheets: but motorcycle cops, like they're all in like motorcycle helmets. and yeah And then like Lucy Lane and like all the like the kids at the school and all the town people, like a they know that Selena's behind everything and they somehow like organized like a full like protest slash resistance movement to her within a couple hours. Yeah.
Zach Sheets: And then, like, because they all have, like, signs. They're all like, Selena, get out of here. sleep Get out of town, Selena. And then, like, she's, like, riding through town in, like, a like a like a big, like, Cadillac convertible.
Zach Sheets: like and Like, it's like a parade.
Zach Sheets: and then, yeah, it's just like, oh, round them up and, get like, arrest them all. And then, like all her, like, cops are, like, starting beating her up, beating up all, like, the the students.
Zach Sheets: And i think I think she mentions like her big plan is that she's going slowly expand out and like take over like other like like cities and towns, police forces, and the military.
Zach Sheets: And like that's how she's going to take over like the like North America.
Chris Prime: because her master business plan is to rule the world, but... I mean, Superman's gonna show up, right? She's she's aware.
Zach Sheets: be back at some point.
Chris Prime: so yeah
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: It's not like she fought Superman before. there should It was a thing where, like, maybe... Okay, again, you want to tie into a better story, it's like, oh, I once tried to fight Superman, but I wasn't powerful, but now I am, and he isn't here, so now I can, like, blah, blah, blah. You know, like...
Zach Sheets: And also, like like Lex Luthor's out there, too. like He's not going tolerate some witch taking over the world, but he can't.
Chris Prime: Well, to be fair, Lex Luthor's plan was just like missiles. And then.
Chris Prime: What was his other scheme?
Zach Sheets: Well, he was he wasn't in the last like but one before this. we He wasn't in three, so... His his plan in two was just to like let... like let Zod kill Superman, or like like sort of work with Zod, and then he's like, oh, then I'll swoop in.
Chris Prime: Oh, OK, yeah, so.
Chris Prime: Wait a minute. So like they don't even mention like, again, this is what happens when they couldn't figure out like how to tell a shared universe because they know aliens exist.
Chris Prime: They know like invaders from another world. And it's just like, oh, hey, like, what's this? Whoa. That's why it kind of makes sense late earlier in the movie when e like Ethan is like walking the streets and they're all just ignoring him.
Chris Prime: So, yeah, it's fine.
Zach Sheets: yeah He's on drugs.
Chris Prime: Yeah, they're like, oh, is it Zod back? No? All right. you know like The average citizen doesn't know that like the the the threat is gone. you know They're just like, one day that could just come back. What?
Zach Sheets: Like Lucy, Lucy Lane's just like, oh, it's another runaway like compact or like a construction vehicle, whatever. It's another one one one of those. It's like, it's a runaway.
Chris Prime: It happens frequently in this town.
Zach Sheets: i so i love how about the ending is, too, where, like, car like she like goes back to the lake, and then it seems like Argosy is like just, like, underwater. it's like They don't do, like, the whole, like, interdimensional portal, like, imagery again.
Zach Sheets: It's just like, oh, it's just underwater now.
Chris Prime: Oh, you're right. She doesn't even need the ship anymore.
Zach Sheets: No, she just flies and into the lake, and then it's like, oh, Argosy is just, like, underwater now. and then,
Chris Prime: So... but i Wait, is it underwater or she just transported and it's supposed to be like a... Like, because, okay. Is the portal to... and To... a Argo City...
Chris Prime: through the water of like that lake on Earth?
Zach Sheets: I mean, that's where she comes out and then goes back in But like just the way it's shot, it seems like Argo City is just like under the lake. But I i think she was supposed to... like She went to like the... back She traveled into inner space again.
Zach Sheets: and then somehow, without the pod, like she just like flew into inner space. And then you don't go back into Argo City. You don't you use that set again. it's just like... You see the lights come back on. It's like, oh, everything's fine now. End of the movie.
Chris Prime: Don't worry about any of this. Yeah. It like tries the bow tie the story, but I don't know. Like if you're a big comic fan, like someone that likes world building and and kind of like, what was it? Like cause and reactions.
Chris Prime: Uh, like there's a lot of questions. Like for so like example, that principal has to explain what happened to that missing student. Lucy Lane has explain what happened to her roommate.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Ethan's just like, I'll explain what happened to Linda. It's like, what are you going to him? like She died in an explosion or something? You're going
Chris Prime: Also, did that mountain ever go back to being normal?
Zach Sheets: to It did. it did like was Everything kind of flashed back to normal.
Chris Prime: Okay.
Zach Sheets: Somehow.
Chris Prime: But, like, that biker gang's still in the town? like
Zach Sheets: like
Chris Prime: It's like Mad Max now? Like, they just rule that town?
Zach Sheets: Well, the cops are just like the like not brainwashed anymore.
Chris Prime: Maybe they weren't. They were just promised power. then like
Zach Sheets: m It's like, oh, we get to beatep we get to beat up students? Alright.
Chris Prime: No consequence? Oh, cool.
Zach Sheets: we get to beat up the girls from that all-girls school?
Chris Prime: That dorm?
Zach Sheets: But
Chris Prime: Those uppity girls in that dorm?
Zach Sheets: but yeah, I think that's pretty much it for Supergirl.
Chris Prime: Yeah, i mean, again, for a movie I wasn't a big fan of, it it it's it's very, like, I think people need to see it just to see where, like, movie, comic book movies can go.
Chris Prime: Like, I think it's, like,
Zach Sheets: is it Is it better or worse than quest for Peace?
Chris Prime: worse.
Zach Sheets: i think it's probably worse too because Quest for Peace is like the pacing is like way better and it is like it actually has momentum yeah
Chris Prime: It has a classic comic book story. Honestly, if they just did a Superman versus like a wizard in Superman four, I'll be i'll be like, all right, well, they're running out ideas. So the wizard fight happens.
Chris Prime: And like not every comic book art in like comic books is going to be great. Like sometimes it's just a story and then it's like this pays off later or whatever. You know, it's like that's the complexity of a comic book story.
Chris Prime: But when it comes to a movie, especially for an origin story movie, or even like, hey, we're introducing this character. You know, we're going to go we're going to rehash some familiar beats.
Chris Prime: They avoid all that only because they don't don know how to do that. Right. Like. Not saying that, like, even any kind of new Marvel. I mean, i'm I'm calling it early.
Chris Prime: Any kind of new. Marvel or DC movie that introduces a character to the general public that has never seen this character on film before is going to go through an Orden story where it's like the the familiar beats, right?
Chris Prime: like It's like a rule because unless you you know a lot about this character through just sort of like osmosis of the background or it's like, oh, this person is generic soldier.
Zach Sheets: Yep. yep
Chris Prime: And you're like okay, so that explains the training or explains, I don't know, the the like why they're here. In this movie, this girl is just looking for a a so a ball.
Chris Prime: So it's like everything else that happens is just like, oh, she's just like not a fighter. She's not a like, I mean, she's smart.
Chris Prime: You know, it's like she's cryptomian smart. So it's not like she uses that brain to build a machine or like doesn't Superman do a thing where he like touched a book and like he knew something about it something? Or am I wrong? I feel like that happened in one of the Superman movies.
Zach Sheets: I mean, Superman has so many like like one one-time powers, I'm sure that happened at some point. It's like Kryptonian book-absorbing!
Chris Prime: So, like...
Chris Prime: And then, Kara, only because she is... they They do bring it up in the beginning where it's like, oh, she's an orphan. It's like, okay, yeah, she's sort of an orphan in this term where she has no one on this planet.
Chris Prime: but in that, like, she had, like, a childhood.
Zach Sheets: she has parents. Like, she has parents.
Chris Prime: Yeah. But she, but it's like she, but like, I mean, she has, like, memories of, like, being loved.
Zach Sheets: They're not dead. They're alive.
Chris Prime: You know, it's it's, it's like, oh no, like, no one loves her. like They kind of stress that in the beginning when, like, on Earth, like,
Zach Sheets: It is... It is weird she decided like, be an orphan, not, like, an exchange student, or be like, oh, my parents are from, like, Switzerland or something. She's like, oh, no, that my parents are dead.
Chris Prime: Yeah, she went dark real soon. I don't know why she did that.
Zach Sheets: It doesn't seem like she had a bad relationship with her parents. She seemed to love them and they loved her. comes to her and is like, oh, my parents are dead.
Zach Sheets: Don't ask about them.
Zach Sheets: The only person I know is my cousin.
Chris Prime: Who, like, doesn't even know I'm here, because she was here for, like, a week. left before he came back.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: Now, can you imagine being Superman coming back to Earth and then like all this news and photos and he's like, wait, I have family?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, she was like, oh, hey, it's like, Superman, I met your cousin. He's like, my cousin? have a cousin?
Chris Prime: And then it's like, where did your cousin go? He's like, wait, what? Because they're going to ask him. you know His name's on record on the file at that school of the recommendation letter that he wrote
Zach Sheets: They're going call me like, oh, Mr. Kendo, I'm so sorry, your your cousin died. He's like, what?
Zach Sheets: she died a She died in a freak car, like an explosion. There's no body. it disintegrated.
Chris Prime: She died a freak, like, farming equipment accident that happens a lot in this town. Also, i think, like, the last person everyone's seen Lucy with was with Ethan on that carnival date.
Chris Prime: And the, the but like, he took her to the abandoned amusement park, right?
Zach Sheets: I don't know who, because Kara slash Linda was like following her bracelet, and then Ethan follows her there.
Chris Prime: Oh, okay.
Zach Sheets: I don't know. i don't think anyone knew that she was going there, or that was like a planned just like surprises her with like roses and candy. He's like, hey, I stalked you and followed you. I love you.
Chris Prime: Yeah, but like, from any other perspective that isn't the core group, they're just like, didn't that handyman follow that teen to that abandoned site and then she was never seen again?
Zach Sheets: so Yeah, I'm trying to think if she ever, like, if car like is in her like Linda disguise any time after that.
Zach Sheets: I don't think she is.
Chris Prime: i don't think so.
Zach Sheets: Because she transforms into Supergirl and flies him in, like, the weird NFL bumper car.
Chris Prime: Mm-hmm.
Zach Sheets: It's like a whole like a whole like bumper car that's NFL themed. And does it like flies some miles away from like Midvale and like to the beach. It's like, hey, you're safe now. don't know how you're going to get back. You walk back, it's fine.
Chris Prime: like, this was two days of travel for me to come back home.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: You could have just...
Zach Sheets: This is like on it's like will itness like harsh wilderness. like I had to walk through this mountainous terrain to get back to Midvale. Yeah.
Chris Prime: Also, he's probably super late for his, like, contract gigs, you know, like...
Zach Sheets: It's like, well, you're fired, Ethan. You you weren't here to like mow the lawn at the school. Yep.
Chris Prime: Damn, I hope that date was worth it.
Chris Prime: But yeah, i think we I think we talked enough. This is, I mean, if anything, I'm excited for the new Supergirl movie just so, like, to see it done correctly.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: And then I'm not saying even the Supergirl TV show was bad. Like, I think that was admirable for what it was, too.
Zach Sheets: I mean, the later seasons weren't particularly great, but the first couple seasons were good. and all the And all the crossover stuff with NCW was pretty great.
Chris Prime: And that's another thing, too. like I don't think the actors had any problems. this This movie has like a great cast, just sort of like the script does nothing.
Zach Sheets: I mean, I think the big thing for me is, like, the pacing, where it's just, like, there's no urgency. It's just, like, Kara is just, like, screwing around and just hanging out at school for, like, half the movie.
Zach Sheets: And it's, like, the focus of, like, you have to get this thing back because your your civilization's gonna die is just, like, on the back burner.
Chris Prime: Which is pretty dramatic. and the It's like really, you know, big what's at stake thing, which Kara just doesn't understand because she wasn't there to hear that. And then...
Zach Sheets: yes so it is also It also feels like it's two hours. It feels two hours. It feels long.
Zach Sheets: o
Chris Prime: Well, this is like a Superman thing, but it's like a lot of flying sequences, which is like, we need to travel. Like we need to go to another destin a green screen destination.
Zach Sheets: Remember how cool was in the first movie? like Do that again.
Zach Sheets: like arch It's like, Carr, aren't you on a mission? like just don't Don't mind these horses. like Find the thing.
Chris Prime: yeah
Zach Sheets: yeah, hopefully the new one is is great. I think we're going to probably see it at some point here. i think it's it's getting you really good reviews, I think, too. like There's earlier reviews, and it's getting... like like saying it's like very like Mad Max-y and stuff. So that's cool.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
Zach Sheets: And, uh, yeah, that's this week's episode. Head over to the site. We got all of our stuff there. We got news, reviews, trailers. check out our, uh, our social media too, like Instagram and, uh, all the other social media. Cause we're, we're going to be at too many games. We're going to be at too many games. So, there'll probably be some stuff on the floor of too many games, uh,
Zach Sheets: the show floor and cool stuff you find. So check that out. And yeah, I think we're trying we're still trying to figure out next week's episode. to be something probably, you know, 4th of July related because it's going to the holiday weekend next weekend. So probably maybe like Independence Day or something like that next week. So stay tuned for that.
Zach Sheets: And yes, for Chris, I'm Zach and we will see you next week.
