00:00:27
Speaker
We're recording this two weeks, about two weeks before this is actually released. Um... Alex, this is a mainly my fault and your fault. but it's It's exclusively mine and your fault. Tachi is completely kind innocent in this scheduling gaffe.

Vegas Plans and Gambling Jokes

00:00:48
Speaker
What do you have going on? Me? oh I'm just getting things removed from my body. um I have two cysts and they're they're putting me to sleep and and pulling them out.
00:01:02
Speaker
And um so if all of a sudden in three weeks I'm not on the podcast anymore, something really bad happened. Something bad happened. Sorry if you're eating and listening to this. Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:13
Speaker
Me, I guess mine's probably just as tragic, I would say, but I got to go to Vegas and have a good time and gamble and sounds horrible win a lot of money, i'm i'm sure.
00:01:28
Speaker
We don't actually need advertising sponsors because Malik's got us. I've got golden hands. I actually shouldn't say that. I don't want to jinx myself. I take that back. On the next episode we record after this, I will update with my gambling winnings and or losses.
00:01:45
Speaker
I guess just or. You can't have both. ah You can have both. like you could You could win money, but you lost your soul. Deep. Tachi, how are you doing?
00:01:57
Speaker
um I'm good. I'm just hanging out.
00:02:02
Speaker
I see the waves. on so I see the waves on your thing. Oh, you do Okay. Yeah. Yeah. um Cool. Well, yeah, we recorded our Thunderbolts episode two days

Running Gags: The Pope and Ryan Gosling

00:02:12
Speaker
ago. So in terms of movie news, there's not much that has happened in the last couple of days.
00:02:19
Speaker
Except. Except we got a new Pope. We did get a new Pope and he watched Conclave right before the Conclave. Pope Bob.
00:02:34
Speaker
I'm glad the soundboard works now. Yeah, I figured it out. You know, we have had, we had that joke where we brought up like Ryan Gosling every episode. Have we actually brought up the Pope and or Catholicism every episode?
00:02:49
Speaker
Every episode. it It's, it's gotta be a majority at this point. I feel like was only the last three. Really? Because there was the... I think we brought it up. the i can't remember if we brought it up episode one. I know we brought it up episode three because I made the joke that didn't land.
00:03:11
Speaker
We brought it up this episode, obviously. We brought up the last episode. not going to get over it. feel like there's at least one more out there. i could be wrong, though. Okay, well, so we brought up the Pope.
00:03:22
Speaker
Now let's bring up Ryan Gosling. What about him? hope he's doing well today. Yeah, I hope he's doing well, too.

Movie Critiques: From 'Song to Song' to Obscure Picks

00:03:29
Speaker
Maybe he's listening. He seems good guy hope he is do we think he's mean in real life or do you think he's nice i think he's really nice i think he's really nice i would be devastated that would be the worst news here here is how i know ryan gosling is a nice guy and i i know this in my heart please don't have you ever heard anything bad about him in the news
00:03:57
Speaker
Like, have you ever heard like, heard like drama with Ryan Gosling? Not even like, like he did like like like an actual bad thing, like celebrity drama gossip. Like, ooh, he was mean to so-and-so. Because I haven't.
00:04:12
Speaker
have Have you, Toshi? I think he just keeps low-key. He seems like a chill guy. Yeah. He's married to Eva Mendes. They've been married for quite some time now, I think.
00:04:25
Speaker
they got They got the kiddos. He's doing movies for them now. And it's like... Never heard or anything bad about him. like So far, he can do no wrong. I love that man.
00:04:36
Speaker
and so Song to song was kind of wrong. he He did kind of wrong with that one. now All can be forgiven. ah Yes. Malik, you have seen it, actually.
00:04:49
Speaker
Song to Song? I've seen it? You have seen Song to Song, because we had this conversation after I watched it. Hold on. The Terrence Malick movie, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, takes place in Austin.
00:05:02
Speaker
Oh my god, I have seen it. This movie's not good. Ha ha.
00:05:08
Speaker
Was that his puncture? Oh my God. Puncture. Alex, have you seen puncture? No, I don't think I have. Please do. With Chris Evans. Have you heard of it? ah I'm looking it up right now. Oh.
00:05:20
Speaker
Puncture. I need you to watch it. A lawyer who is drug addict, who is a drug addict, fights a medical supplies corporation in court while battling his personal demons.
00:05:34
Speaker
Is it like a reference to him like puncturing himself with a needle? Like. It's just a reference to a really miserable viewing experience. We did a review um of that movie on the Real Guys podcast.
00:05:51
Speaker
Why'd you pick it? Huh? Why'd you pick it? Well, I don't know. i thought you picked it. Me? it was ah it was Yeah, I thought it was a funny episode. Like, it was a good episode. But it was a really bad movie.
00:06:03
Speaker
Oh, man. I'm sorry if I picked it. I'm sorry if I picked it. I
00:06:11
Speaker
i feel like worst ofs. Is when like we're actually at our best because we're not like trying to be smart. Yeah. Like you explaining like sinners like, you know, the writing I think in this act was, you know, I didn't quite feel the emotion. But it's like when we're talking about act of valor and apparently puncture, it's like, you this is garbage. like We'll definitely have a um ah worst of episode episodes. Yeah, it'd be fun.
00:06:38
Speaker
Mm

Predicting Movie News and Speculations

00:06:39
Speaker
hmm. right. Well, before we get to the draft, we wanted to do something fun since there wasn't any movie news. We got off track majorly on that one, but we're going to predict what we think is happening. What's the what's that date going to be?
00:06:52
Speaker
Of our next episode or of the Cannes Film Festival starting? No, of the ah when this episode comes out. So this episode will come out May 20th and it is currently May 9th. So we are going to say some news that we think is going to happen in the next 11 days. Come back and see if any of it came true.
00:07:10
Speaker
Let's have let's have like a a warm prediction and then like a ah spicy one. Okay, i've got I've got two, so i'll make yeah ill I can flip-flop them to be warm and spicy. All right, I need to think about either option. so Okay, proceed. I do need a warm one, but I have my spicy locked and loaded.
00:07:27
Speaker
Okay, i'll I'll give my warm one. All right, so the Khan Film Festival is happening this weekend, and here is my warm movie news prediction. Mission Impossible, The Final Reckoning receives a seven-minute standing ovation at Khan.
00:07:43
Speaker
We should sit in over and under. That's short, right? Only seven minutes? I don't know. I feel like I've heard like 30 for some. It's going to receive minutes and standing of standing ovation or whatever.
00:07:57
Speaker
One plus minutes. I think you're right. I think seven minutes is technically short. So I'm go go a little bit over. I'm gonna say 12 minutes. Okay. Yeah. Because I think every movie gets a seven minute standing ovation.
00:08:08
Speaker
Bro, that would be so annoying. That's like the one reason I wouldn't want to go to con. I do want to go to con. But like, imagine just standing there and just... I don't want to do that.
00:08:20
Speaker
Maybe I could strap robot arms to my chest and just clap for me. Your hands are just...
00:08:29
Speaker
i got my I got my warm take. All right, let's go for it. Zootopia 2 full trailer comes out. Oh. Next two weeks. That'd be nice. That's just my take. Cool.
00:08:41
Speaker
Wait, we should write these down. Do you have yours written down? I can write them down. Oh, this is recorded. We'll be okay.
00:08:53
Speaker
You got a warm take? There will be some sort of Marvel announcement within the next two weeks. Okay. I think that's a good warm one. it It might be about like Doomsday. It might be about the Ironheart show. I'm not sure, but we'll see.
00:09:09
Speaker
Do you think maybe it could be more cast announcements for Doomsday? Could be. Are they done? don't know if they're done. I did see that they were. um This is a real piece of movie news, actually, that they were doing reshoots for the post-credit scene for Fantastic Four.
00:09:27
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I saw, I read, I saw the article and it just said fantastic four is going through reshoots and everyone in the comments is like, oh this is a bad sign. This is a bad sign. If you click it, they're just filming a post-credit scene. Like i don't even think they're reshooting a post-credit scene. they think they're just filming one, but it was clickbait media.
00:09:44
Speaker
It was real news though. We did forget that. So we we do apologize um for that, that glaring error, that glaring misinformation we put out. All right.
00:09:55
Speaker
I've got my spicy take. Okay. Minecraft two gets announced.
00:10:03
Speaker
Chicken jockey. Chicken jockey. To Minecraft two jockey. Did you guys watch it? No. No. Did you? No. Absolutely not. I have no interest.
00:10:14
Speaker
A fun bit of a lost in the frame lore. When we were getting this off the ground, I was lobbying really, really hard for our first episode to be about the Minecraft movie.
00:10:26
Speaker
It's true. Immediately shut it down. I'll watch it for free though. Later. um I'll be subjected to this. day I got my spicy take. You ready?
00:10:36
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Ari Aster's Eddington gets really bad reviews at con. No. How come? I have seen a decent amount of public sentiment on the Internet saying who asked for this and ah ah from from from places that I wouldn't have expected it like circles. I wouldn't have expected that kind of feedback. They say they're like, I don't want to spoil it, so i'm not going to say it. But there's something in the movie that is probably already dated to a lot of people.
00:11:12
Speaker
And so they think that the movie came out five years too late. I think hitting on on that point, i have seen discourse on that. And I think it's kind of ridiculous that people think we're past that or telling stories in that setting because it was a major part of our pretty recent lives. so Well, i mean, I could see people not really wanting to revisit that so soon.
00:11:41
Speaker
And so... like maybe in five years it'll be like a comfortable topic, but I could see, um, I don't know. I could just see that movie not clicking well.
00:11:53
Speaker
And I hope it does. I mean, I hope that my thing is wrong because I like Ari Aster. Um, but who knows? Maybe beau is afraid, it goes to his head and he like really jumps the shark and it just doesn't land.
00:12:08
Speaker
It can happen. Um, I don't want to speak it into existence, but it's already out there. If this happens, it's your fault. Maybe the 15-foot penis monster returns. Oh, yeah.
00:12:19
Speaker
The who? You heard me. I'll be on the lookout. Watch out. Watch out. I was afraid. be on the lookout.
00:12:28
Speaker
Like, out of fear, not, you know, excitement. is one I just want to clear that up. Unless. Oh, I don't know. All right. Do you have a ah spicy prediction, Tachi?
00:12:41
Speaker
I think there will be news about one of two things. The Odyssey or Timothee Chalamet. Positive or negative?
00:12:53
Speaker
I don't know. like just feel something in the air right now. Not that those two are related, but I think something's going to happen. make it If Timmy dies, I'm blaming you. oh my God.
00:13:06
Speaker
Make it negative. Timmy crashes Nolan's chute. That'd be sick. Like crashes and just shows up uninvited or like drives a truck into the chute. Drives a truck uninvited.
00:13:20
Speaker
Ford F-150 or semi-truck? Semi. Dude,

Blockbuster Draft: Rules and Strategies

00:13:25
Speaker
it's going to be crazy when the Timmy Chalamet terrorist attack happens and people are hearing us joke about it after the fact, even though we technically predicted it. We're going to jail for a long time. I mean, this is... i mean, he damaged so many props.
00:13:44
Speaker
At least, like, when they're sentencing us to death, they'll be like, you guys really accurate. Yeah. Just give us little fist bumps on our way to our jail cells. Yeah.
00:13:56
Speaker
Fist bumping terrible. Oh, anyway. All right. We should film episodes in the future more often. Yeah. You guys ready to draft? I'm ready to draft.
00:14:13
Speaker
Was that fitting? I love that. I'm hyped. it feels like It feels like a crisp September Sunday afternoon, and I'm ready to watch the Cowboys lose.
00:14:25
Speaker
Let's go. So the theme of today's draft is blockbusters. Yep. We are defining blockbusters. We're not looking at the budget. We're just looking at box office.
00:14:37
Speaker
So a blockbuster will be any movie that has made at least $100 million in its box office run. And I'll go ahead and read off the categories that we have. also wanted to give a shout out to a different podcast called The Big Picture who helped inspire some of these categories. So thank you.
00:14:53
Speaker
um The first category is 1990s. So movies in the 90s that grossed over $100 million. dollars Second category, Mega Blockbuster.
00:15:04
Speaker
Now this will be movies that made over 250 million in the box office. Next we've got Misunderstood, a $100 million dollars movie that has less than 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, on the Tomatometer.
00:15:20
Speaker
Tomatometer.
00:15:23
Speaker
Next category. Tomometer. That's what it was. Oscar nominee. Next one, comedy, action and thriller action or thriller, and then wild card.
00:15:35
Speaker
Does anyone have any questions for these categories? Nope. Well, then all that's left to do is spin the wheel and see who goes first.
00:15:49
Speaker
And it is... Alex. Let's go! 101. ah one oh one There you go. Let's go. man. Who is

Draft Picks: Comedy to Mega Blockbusters

00:15:59
Speaker
second?
00:16:00
Speaker
The wheel is spinning. Looks like it's me. I'm on the turn again. And you are on the turn again. Was I first last time? Yeah. Alex is in the middle. Yep.
00:16:11
Speaker
How is the turn? Do you think the turn in these scenarios is beneficial? Or does it hurt you? I think it's really dependent on the categories because like what whether we're we're we're all sharing the same category for the same draft or um there are just better options per category. It it really just depends.
00:16:35
Speaker
But so far, so far it's pretty advantageous, I think, to be on the 3-4 turn. won the last draft. Yeah. And so I think we need some redemption at this time around. How do you guys feel going into our second draft versus the first?
00:16:50
Speaker
I feel a little less confident, actually. Really? Really? Do you think you're just being humble? No, I'm just afraid of repeats from the previous draft. And also, i don't want to provide like big movie fatigue.
00:17:09
Speaker
Because I think that's my go-to, my default. only I like the blockbusters. The blockbusters are good. Yeah, they're fun.
00:17:20
Speaker
There were some bangers on this list. There was also a lot of garbage there. I do think there's some interesting conversations to have right after the draft, just based off of, um I don't know, patterns I saw like from the 1990s to now.
00:17:38
Speaker
People spend a lot of money on really bad movies. That's why we got a category for it. I know. All right.
00:17:49
Speaker
Alex, kick us off. What is the first category you were going to go for in Lost in the Frame's second draft? So I am going to give an addendum to the fans because Tachi kind of hit on it.
00:18:01
Speaker
He said he was worried about repeats and fatigue and all that. So I put a set of rules on myself where I can't um do a repeat and I can't pick from a franchise that I've already up.
00:18:15
Speaker
gased up Um, so no star Wars for me, star Wars off the table. and Okay. Which is hard, but, um, you know, I think that makes it more interesting. It makes me pick some movies. Maybe I wouldn't have picked and, uh, gets, gets some conversation flowing.
00:18:35
Speaker
So it's good idea. um I'll try to follow that as well. Actually. With that said, with that said, With the number one overall pick in the 2025 Lost in the Frame blockbuster draft, ah Team Alex is going with Shrek 2 for comedy.
00:18:56
Speaker
Wow. $932 million dollars in the box office. Nearly $1 billion. But Shrek 2, top five funniest movie ever for me.
00:19:09
Speaker
Do you like Shrek 2 more than Shrek 1? Easily. And now I'm not i'm not saying Shrek 1 is a bad movie. Shrek 1 is a great movie. But Shrek 2 is like Tom Brady of Shrek movies.
00:19:27
Speaker
ah Shrek 2 does... Because the the thing that I love about Shrek 2 is it has no setup it needs to do, whereas Shrek has to build out everything. So Shrek is kind of tethered to the fact that we have to set up the Shrek universe. Shrek 2, no tether.
00:19:44
Speaker
That balloon is floating to the kingdom of far, far away. This is a beautiful, beautiful poetry about Shrek. Man, I love Shrek. Shrek is love. Shrek is life.
00:19:54
Speaker
I love that you said Shrek universe. That's great. Yeah. And that was for comedy? That was for comedy. Or like the pick. Because it is, it's just so funny. I mean, it's such a quotable movie, and it's one of those movies, and I...
00:20:09
Speaker
maybe we'll pause this tangent, but it's one of those movies that works for kids and adults. Like it was a true family movie. yeah There's so many jokes that went over my head when I was a kid. Like, okay. For example, the scene when, um, they're flipping the channels and they come across like the cops spinoff nights.
00:20:28
Speaker
Yeah. another leg of that We got a white Bronco heading East. it's The helicopter cam. chasing But no kid's going to get that joke. No kid's going to understand that they're making fun of OJ Simpson.
00:20:40
Speaker
Like, but the parents will, and the kids will get it in 10 to 15 years when they rewatch it. It's got great rewatch value. It's got incredible. I mean, I've seen the movie, God, like 10, 10 times at least.
00:20:57
Speaker
And then obviously the end scene, you know, you got, um, I need a hero by the fairy godmother. Yeah. i mean, that's arguably a top five performance of a song in a movie ever. That is one of the most hype... That could be the most hype kids seen in movie history.
00:21:14
Speaker
But enough about Shrek 2 because we have a lot of picks left. And we we're supposed to only go 15 to 30 seconds on each one. I spent five minutes ranting about Shrek 2. You got passionate about Shrek 2. It's okay. It happens to the best of us.
00:21:26
Speaker
I love Shrek 2. We could do a whole episode on Shrek 2. Whole Shrek trilogy. I think there's a fourth one and I've never seen it. All right. Moving on. I've got... I think I'm going to go for Mega Blockbuster because I don't want it to get stolen.
00:21:41
Speaker
And for Mega Blockbuster, I'm picking Dune 2. so That's not what I thought you were going to pick. There was another, and again, after this we can talk about our are alternatives, but it was... Good choice.
00:21:55
Speaker
um don't even know if if I could call it a tight race because I've thought about Dune every single day since it came out. Every And has not stopped. Every day. So much so that Cam gets upset with how much I bring up Dune.
00:22:08
Speaker
It's great. It's almost perfect. So on my computer, you can save like live lock screens, like lock screens that move. So every time my computer turns off, it's Timothy walking towards the camera, blurred out with the sandworm, jumping out of the ground behind him.
00:22:26
Speaker
And that's just on repeat. So every day I see it, and I just i feel the aura from miles away. And it has made a long-lasting impression on who I am as a man. Do you remember seeing Dune 2 in ah Dolby?
00:22:40
Speaker
Like opening day, Malik? You and I both went and saw it. I didn't go with you. Yeah, you did.
00:22:49
Speaker
We were sitting in the top left or yeah the top corner of the theater right next to the speaker. We both went deaf. I thought went with Tachi. Tachi, we saw it. At Barn Creek? Maybe I saw it with both of you.
00:23:01
Speaker
Maybe I'm double time. Were you there with us? No, I saw it with Tachi at Barton Creek. I saw it at Barton Creek with you.
00:23:10
Speaker
I think we were just all there. Apparently. you do you guys know each other? Yes, we did. Yeah, because that had to have been after. um It was after the movie that won't be named.
00:23:21
Speaker
Yeah. What? The first movie. Our short film. Oh, oh, it's all coming back to me. yeah we were there together. Yep.
00:23:33
Speaker
we were I don't remember being deafened, though. I do. I was fine. I think I was just the opening scene with the the helicopter stuff, the thopters.
00:23:46
Speaker
Oh, that was loud. Yeah. Three you're right in there. Yeah. All right. Yeah. Doing two. Love it. All right. I don't know which category to go with. So I'm going to go nineteen ninety s Originally, i was going to go ah movie that I've already picked before, which is The Lion King.
00:24:04
Speaker
My favorite animated movie. However, spice it up i'm gonna the matrix fuck 1999 good pick good pick thank you that's the first i think that's like the ah first official like actual steal hmm yeah that was that was my number one my introduction keanu reeves um it was great i probably shouldn't have watched it when i was like five or six but it's okay it was i don't i think that movie's like i mean I don't want to say it's okay for children, but it's not like... It's not that bad....too graphic.
00:24:37
Speaker
there Is it R? Is it rated r I think it's rated It is. And I don't know if it's... That would first R-rated movie for a kid. Yeah. Because it's not that out there. It's a little weird.
00:24:49
Speaker
Yeah. Kind of creepy, like probably for a little kid. But it's not like, you know, scarring. Then maybe it's the second movie that I'm thinking of where it has like the giant mass orgy and like the underground cave.
00:25:03
Speaker
Is that the second movie? That's gotta to be the second movie. I think that's the second one. I'm also remembering, because I saw it when I was very young as well, and there was a part that made me kind of scared and very squirmish.
00:25:15
Speaker
It's the little robot caterpillar that goes down to the belly button. I hated that. Still, I watched The Matrix sometime last year for the first time in a while, and still I was just like, ugh.
00:25:26
Speaker
Yeah, makes me squirm. That's a great pick, though. That was going to be mine. So um good job. And you're on the turnaround. So pick, steal another one from me. All right. Then i will go with action. Okay.
00:25:42
Speaker
And i think I'm going to go with Mission Impossible Fallout. It was on my list. I'm sorry. That's insane. It's just.
00:25:54
Speaker
That's okay. That's okay. I love that. I love that pick. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. um In my opinion, it's, it's the greatest mission possible. It's really, really compelling.
00:26:05
Speaker
Keeps the foot on the pedal. The whole movie essentially. And um yeah, just Tom Cruise at his finest. Great pick. Thanks. I went to half price books the other day.
00:26:18
Speaker
Um, and I picked up the first mission impossible mission impossible three. And then ah think rogue nation, because that was all they had. But, but then I had the thought, I was like Oh, I just need to buy the, like the box set.
00:26:33
Speaker
And so I just bought the entire box at yesterday. So I've got three extra mission impossible movies on DVD. If someone wants them. Nice. Yeah. For my, uh, For my next category, i guess I'll go 1990s as well and go with my second pick.
00:26:51
Speaker
Sorry. It's okay. It's still a great pick, but I'm going Jurassic Park. Solid, solid movie. I was definitely ah dinosaur kid growing up.
00:27:05
Speaker
I'd go to the Scholastic Book Fair and try to pick up as many books about dinosaurs as I can. And that definitely all stemmed from Jurassic Park. Scary. The kitchen scene. Yeah. The kitchen, the kitchen scene, there are photos of me. Um, where do they have the Jurassic park?
00:27:21
Speaker
Like themed rides. Is it universal? Yeah. There are pictures of me as a kid at universal crying on one of the Jurassic park rides. Um, but I mean, movies just solid, great. Like I, it's like a great horror movie, honestly, um, holds up very well.
00:27:40
Speaker
Great effects for the time stands the test of time. Great pick. right, Alex, you are on the turn. I know. and I think I am going to go Mega Blockbuster.
00:27:53
Speaker
And I'm going to go with at $1.495 billion dollars in revenue. be? I'm going to go with Top Gun Maverick.
00:28:06
Speaker
Great choice. Was that the one? i thought that you were going to pick it, Malik. it I did have it on my list for a different category. Ooh.
00:28:18
Speaker
Ooh. Action thriller? I just crossed it out. I'm not telling you. I want to know. i soker nominee. Oscar nominee. Oh, yeah. Oh, I don't have a wild card.
00:28:29
Speaker
I need to write that down. Okay. All right. um Yeah. Top Gun Maverick. Everyone's favorite 2020s era military propaganda movie.
00:28:43
Speaker
It rips. Made me want to go unless. Absolutely rips. I sped home that night. Same. Driving to danger zone. All right.
00:28:54
Speaker
It's just, it's great. My parents, they didn't see the vision. I saw the vision. Your parents didn't like it. No, they liked the OG better. What? there I think it's a generational thing. I think they grew up with the old top gun and they liked that more, but we grew up with this top gun. So we like this more, but Maverick is just like, it's better in every way.
00:29:17
Speaker
Like it is. My dad thinks it's a rehash. That's his thing. He's like, it's a rehash. It's the same thing. And it's stupid.
00:29:25
Speaker
Strong. and and And he's right. like to But he's wrong. He's right about everything. But it still rips. It still bangs. When are we going to have an episode with your dad as a guest? Yeah, we probably should have brought him on for the. um but the war The contemporary war movie one.
00:29:44
Speaker
We could bring him on. We could bring him on. We'll have ah the parents episode. That would rip. That'd be funny. you' You're listening to some brainstorming live, folks. oh You don't get this at any other podcast. You don't get the show notes.
00:29:58
Speaker
While you're listening. So you went with Top Gun for Mega Blockbuster. And then what was your previous one? Remind me. Shrek 2 Comedy. And what's your which is third pick? Oh, that's right. That's where going. I'm on the clock. I'm still on the clock. you're on the turn. That's what I thought. Let's go with Oscar. Oscar nom. $609 million dollars was nominated for Best Picture.
00:30:23
Speaker
i think Best Director as well. um This one is... don't do it do it this one's a wild card i actually don't expect anyone to have picked this one okay uh i'm going with life of pi oh i haven't seen ang lee yeah i had not watched that movie for quite some time because it looked kind of dumb and then i was on a flight somewhere and i i don't remember where i was going i must have been going back home to rhode island But it was on there in the in-flight movies, and I had seen someone talk about it recently.
00:30:59
Speaker
And um they're like, oh, it's pretty good. you know, good cinematography. I saw some screenshots of it. am'm like, OK, let me go check this out. And I'm not going to say that, like, it's like a 10 out of 10, but it's like such a solid 8 out of 10.
00:31:12
Speaker
Really, really good movie. And I was surprised to see that it made it as much money as it did. um ah It's like kind of like surface level philosophy. a lot of the criticism on it is from people who um who love to smell their own farts.
00:31:28
Speaker
But I think it was a pretty interesting conversation um that was being had in the movie. And of course, you know who doesn't like... If you just take it at the most surface value possible...
00:31:41
Speaker
Who doesn't love a movie with a guy on a boat with a pet tiger? I mean, like, we all want that. We all want that. I want a pet tiger. Personally, not me.
00:31:53
Speaker
But I'm different. have two pet tigers. They're just really many. So they're not.
00:31:59
Speaker
What makes the difference is the size. And if they were bigger, I'd tell them to leave. Because they would be tigers. But i mean, it's kind of sick. Would they listen? The thought of like, you know, the thought of owning like a tiger or like maybe not owning. Owning is the wrong word. Being friends with a tiger.
00:32:20
Speaker
That's kind of cool. There's a lot of controversy surrounding Tiger King, so I don't think you want to get into all that. no, no. But this is a mutually beneficial partnership between me and the tiger. It's not for a zoo. Pause.
00:32:32
Speaker
I have a boy that's a tiger. Because, like, you know, the trade proposal is this. I feed him lots of food.
00:32:43
Speaker
And then um if someone ever breaks into my house, they walk in the living room and there's a tiger. I mean, like... That's crazy. And it'd be so sick.
00:32:54
Speaker
Or have it in like the backyard. it's a lot us You do have the backyard for it. You're like a white Mike Tyson.
00:33:02
Speaker
I've been called that a lot, actually. Yeah, Life of Pi. ah Worth checking out. um was surprised to see it made $609 million. dollars I did not think it was that kind of movie, but i mean, Ang Lee had some heavy hitters and um he went on a pretty good run there. And I think, ah I think that's one that we'll probably see maybe come back around in the next couple of years or so. People will might find it again.
00:33:30
Speaker
So nice. All right. Back to me. I'm going to go Oscar nominee as well.

Misunderstood Movies Debate

00:33:40
Speaker
And for my pick, going 2019 Best Picture winner, Parasite.
00:33:48
Speaker
Almost had it almost. Great pick. what is there What is there to say about Parasite that that hasn't been said? I think 2019 was just, one, a monumental year for movies. like Looking back on it, just banger after banger after banger. We were eating good in 2019.
00:34:10
Speaker
Sometimes I look back on my Letterboxd list for that year and i'm just like, Jesus. Solid year. And yeah, so to top it all off with Parasite at that Oscar, getting getting that best picture win.
00:34:22
Speaker
Fantastic movie. Showed it to my family. Watched it maybe like five or six times. Very, very solid movie. Love it. For sure. All right. I'm back on the clock. So I'm going to Misunderstood.
00:34:37
Speaker
and um First Misunderstood. I'm excited for this one. Yeah, this one's... Honestly, I'm surprised the score is this low. um But I'm going to go with Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen because the last hour of this movie is straight gas.
00:34:54
Speaker
I agree. It has some of the best CGI I've ever seen. And it's just... It's so entertaining. And some would say it's Shia LaBeouf at his best.
00:35:06
Speaker
I would agree.
00:35:09
Speaker
The CGI in Transformers is actually kind of nuts. Right? Like, still looking at it today, you're just like, what the fuck? That's sick. It has aged swimmingly low.
00:35:22
Speaker
um So yeah, love that movie. um Gets too much shit, I think it's really fun. And that's what it's supposed to be I wouldn't shit on Transformers movies until after three.
00:35:37
Speaker
Yeah. Like three has its problems too, but like after three is when I'm kind of tapped out. Yeah. But the first three, I'll watch them. Yeah. They're fun. They are fun.
00:35:48
Speaker
All right. oh So now I will go with, I'll go, I'll go with mega blockbuster. We'll just knock out that category entirely. And I'm going to go with Avengers.
00:36:01
Speaker
Infinity War. Yes. Yeah. I mean, no words. I don't even need to describe it. It's one of the most fun theater experiences of all time.
00:36:13
Speaker
Could have picked any Avengers movie. you know They were all there. Yeah, the list superhero movies in this ah mega blockbuster, it's like all of them. Right. It's crazy. and Even The Incredibles.
00:36:25
Speaker
The Incredibles was there too. Both of them. Wow. Yeah, I think so. I think so. Yeah, i didn't I didn't write down all the surprises, but there were quite a few. was just like, huh, that made a lot of money. It's good, but I'm surprised that it made that much money.
00:36:40
Speaker
For sure. All right. Back to you, Malik. Oh, it's back to me? Oh, shit. You think I would understand how this works. All right. um I think I'm going to go misunderstood.
00:36:52
Speaker
Now, for this one, I've got a lot of conflicting feelings. This is only our second draft and I feel like I went heavy on, on the personal side last time and I was shunned for it.
00:37:09
Speaker
It's okay to stay true to your heart. and I know it is good to stay true to your heart, but for my top two, they are both true to my heart, but one has more of a accepted wider appeal, a wider appeal. Yeah.
00:37:23
Speaker
You got to pick the other one. Don't, don't, wimp out truly i love both of these like from the bottom of my heart i i do love both of these but then yeah i don't know guys what you just don't want to lose the draft poll again i don't want to mean the game is part of it the game is part of it it hurt
00:37:46
Speaker
seeing two votes and one of them being myself
00:37:50
Speaker
There was betrayal involved, so I totally get the motivation. Many cases of betrayal. So... What you got? Okay, so what do I got so far? I got that...
00:38:08
Speaker
You know what to do. pick you eye Pick the one that's going to make us go, whoa I don't even think it's going to make you guys go low. I think it's just going to be very underwhelming for everyone in this room and anyone listening. But I really... I love this movie, so I'm going to pick it. You know what? That that sold it.
00:38:26
Speaker
All right. For my misunderstood pick, with 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it did make... Some money. Made like $115 million. I'm going with Clash of the Titans.
00:38:38
Speaker
Oh. Never seen it. Alex, have you seen it? Yeah, I haven't either. Ah, see, it's... And it's okay. But... It's... Uh... I don't even, i i think I just had a phase in middle school when I was super into Greek mythology.
00:38:55
Speaker
It's with, I'm forgetting the guy's name, but the main actor in, yes, in an Avatar. That's him in Avatar, right? Yeah. I watched this one, Alex. You were talking about watching Life of Pi on a plane.
00:39:06
Speaker
I watched Clash of the Titans on a plane maybe a couple months ago, and I was like, God, this movie rips. kind of it's It's like an hour and a half. It's honestly got some pretty good cinematography. The writing is not great.
00:39:19
Speaker
It's not a great movie, but it's just it was just the coolest thing to me in middle school, and I still had a really fun time watching it. And I remember when the trailer came out, it was set to...
00:39:33
Speaker
um the bird and the worm by the used oh used at that time was one of my song was one of my favorite bands and i remember watching that trailer in theaters and just like you ascended oh my god electric and the movie delivered for me i was i was supposed to go see clash the titans with my uncle and then i got sick and then i never saw it
00:40:02
Speaker
That's my Clash of the Titans story. doing me a favor while you're while you're out next week. Go ahead and watch Clash of the Titans. No, i i have I think I have two plans lined up. Oh, also Liam Neeson and Ray Fiennes.
00:40:14
Speaker
Ray Fiennes plays Hades. love Ray Fiennes. And Ray Fiennes is doing like a really sick, like he's got a voice like as Hades. And like the costumes, honestly, in this movie are like very well done.
00:40:27
Speaker
And I think it's really cool how they portrayed the gods. But Ray Fiennes specifically, he's got this like really like low, whispery, raspy voice. And I think he just plays it so well. And he's kind of like a like a smoke demon too.
00:40:40
Speaker
And there's a Kraken. Dude, that movie rips. I do remember the Kraken from the trailer. Yeah. It looks pretty sick. Yeah. right. But that's my misunderstood pick. Obviously, I think it's very misunderstood. So I think that was that was the good pick.
00:40:55
Speaker
Mine are going to kill you. All
00:41:00
Speaker
right, Alex, what you got? oh is it my turn now? Yep. Um... guess i'm just getting lost in the sauce yeah thank you for keeping track touching i'm getting lost too let's go let's action slash thriller okay gonna go with just one of those movies that's just like total dad core but you watch it and you're like i get it oceans 11 oh yeah good oh good pick
00:41:33
Speaker
Ocean's Eleven, i feel like, is such, like, a dad movie. Like, everybody's dad likes Ocean's Eleven. And it made $450 million, dollars so clearly the dad showed up to the... Dad Hive showed up in the box office. wonder if that's where my dad went.
00:41:57
Speaker
Anyway...
00:41:59
Speaker
oh
00:42:02
Speaker
Maybe he was inspired. He tried to join the crew. um I about you. It's a really good movie and there's a... yeah
00:42:15
Speaker
Lock in. there's Lock in. There's a scene at the end and it's such a cliche song to use in movies because every movie uses it now. But Claire de Lune by Debussy.
00:42:27
Speaker
A, it's my favorite classical piece ever. So cliche, but it just it moves me. B, um it works so well with them standing in front of the fountains.
00:42:39
Speaker
ah in the way that movie ends. But it's just such like a classic heist, this rocks, dudes rock movie. Yeah, it's so funny. George Clooney, like Brad Pitt, Ed Norton. I mean, all bangers. You're making me want to watch it right now.
00:42:57
Speaker
I'm going to pregame that movie before I go to Vegas. I'm not going to rob anything, but I think that's a good Vegas pregame movie. Ocean's Eleven and Casino. I think Ocean's Eleven was my my airplane movie actually since we've all listed one today.
00:43:12
Speaker
I'm not gonna lie and I'm being 100% honest. the flight. it was the flight um two So this was December, so I guess it wasn't that recent. But the flight to St. John, I watched Clash of the Titans.
00:43:25
Speaker
The flight coming back, I watched Ocean's Eleven. And I'm not lying. like so's good It is a good plane movie. so St. John's is just cinema island, I guess. i guess so.
00:43:40
Speaker
Great pick. um I believe i am next. Let's go with...
00:43:50
Speaker
I'll do my 90s pick because I don't think, I think that's a low risk. I think everyone's done their 90s pick already. so yeah Yeah, you're safe. I'm going to at $327 million dollars made in the box office, seven with ah Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.
00:44:05
Speaker
Good shit. Brad Pitt heavy list for you. Dude, Brad Pitt, actor for dudes. I'm scared of all these teams, actually. These are sound great. Mm-hmm.
00:44:18
Speaker
little disturbing movie, but um really great pick. It's a really great pick. how much How much did you say it made? And what year did that come out? $327 million. dollars Oh, it's kind of a lot for that kind of movie.
00:44:30
Speaker
Yeah. You know, my mom used to hype this up as like, she's like, oh, is one of the scariest movies I've seen. She's like, it creeped me out to no end. And I watched it and yeah, it holds up.
00:44:42
Speaker
Because it's it's like very psychological. It's like not very cheesy. Yeah. Which I really respect. It it didn't rely a lot on like shock. It was more just dread. And I think I appreciate like a killer...
00:44:55
Speaker
like ah a killer slasher kind of movie, you know, with more dread than shock. I think it makes it more, more lasting. Um, she watched like a Friday the I thought that was a bad movie.
00:45:08
Speaker
It was a hot take. so something right like I think Friday the 13th is a bad movie, but seven great movie, great serial killer movie. I think you've said that hot take on here before already too. Maybe you just told I think I've just told you that, but I kind of agree. Um,
00:45:22
Speaker
But um one thing I wanted to say about Seven, um I've heard like with the marketing and in the 90s that Kevin Spacey wasn't like in any of the promotional material. So like, like no one knew that he was going to be in this movie and Kevin Spacey wasn't really known for these types of roles in the ninety s And it was kind of just kind of just a shock to the general public.
00:45:43
Speaker
So I think that's pretty cool. I think I think that's I think that's a lot of stuff that I think is a lot harder to get away with. Nowadays. Makes me sad. pisses me off to no end that Kevin Spacey sucks as a human.
00:45:56
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, piece of shit. Because, oh my God, dude, he just is... No misses. No misses with Kevin Spacey. Yeah, for season House of Cards is awesome. Yeah. right. Is it back to me?
00:46:07
Speaker
It's back to you. to you. All right. Back to me. I'm going to go for my action thriller. We did action or thriller, correct? Correct. Yeah. All right. um And or.
00:46:20
Speaker
And or.
00:46:23
Speaker
ah Yeah, so for my pick, I went, I think I went kind of crazy style on this one.
00:46:34
Speaker
And I was thinking a little a little bit outside the box, and this may be recency bias considering we just did an episode on it the other day. But I'm picking Thunderbolts.
00:46:45
Speaker
Whoa. cross It the 100 million today. But there it it's like your favorite? It's recency bias. i'm down to I want to pick Thunderbolts.
00:46:56
Speaker
Okay. Wow. hu I respect it. yeah I respect it. yeah im I'm not going to say that like every movie here is like the top of that category for me. But it's movies I like. Movies that I want to have the conversation about.
00:47:10
Speaker
I think that was the approach that I took as well. problem with your approach is we just had a conversation about really long conversation about We're just to take We're going to rehash that entire episode right now.
00:47:23
Speaker
Starting in 3, 2, 1. Welcome to Lost in the Frame. Today we're to talk about Thunderbolts. all right. Yeah. For my action pick, I'm going Thunderbolts. All right. Right on. I'm glad you like it that much.
00:47:36
Speaker
That makes me really happy. Yeah. Yeah, course. Okay. So back to me. What's left? I've got um Oscar nominee, comedy, and wild card left. So my wild card is definitely safe.
00:47:50
Speaker
So I'm going go with Oscar nominee. And I'm going to go with... This kind of surprised me, but The Social Network. Oh. When I watched it, I was blown away that a movie centered around that subject matter could be so interesting the writing i think was just he he wrote it with crack or something that's sorkin baby yeah that's that sorkin writing it's fantastic on cracker both
00:48:22
Speaker
both
00:48:26
Speaker
Shirley. Yeah, love The Social Network. I've only seen it once, but my memory of it is it paints it in a very beautiful light. I implore you to rewatch it.
00:48:37
Speaker
Yeah, i need to. it's It's even better than you remember. i can guarantee that. Sweet. um And then my my next pick is going to be your comedy. And I'm kind of stuck between two, but I think to a little bit of nostalgia here.
00:48:55
Speaker
And I'm going to go with Rush Hour with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. ah Grew up loving ah martial arts movies. So naturally loved watching Jackie Chan, seen a ton of his movies.
00:49:07
Speaker
And then to see that comedy crossover, just chef's kiss. It's a little racist to today's standards, but um I still really like it. So sure. what does that say about you? Let's but let's unpack that. You heard it here first, folks. Tachi is okay with
00:49:27
Speaker
Alright. Malik, your pick.
00:49:32
Speaker
Alright, we've got a couple left. I'm gonna go comedy and... and For this one, I am picking one that is one of my favorites. This is, i would say, similar in the vein that you said, Alex, of Shrek 2 that you think it's better than than the original.
00:49:49
Speaker
And I think this one is better than the original. But I'm going 22 Jump Street. I respect that. I respect that a lot. Hilarious movie. Yeah, the memes we got from it. The Cynthia Slam poetry.
00:50:03
Speaker
I love how, honestly, how meta it is about itself. as a movie yeah as a whole that just like is a cherry on top of an already hilarious movie but to like kind of wrap it in that kind of bow I think really seals it for me So I have um I have a I have a funny story about 22 Jump Street, and I don't know if i ever told my parents this.
00:50:26
Speaker
So we're getting an Alex exclusive. Yeah, wherere we're getting this. This is going to be interesting. um So in eighth grade, ah we got the bright idea as a friend and group. We were all going to go see 22 Street.
00:50:43
Speaker
Okay. That's not a lot. We're in the eighth grade. it and um i And it's not that I hadn't seen any R-rated movies up to that point. I had. I actually hadn't seen 21 Jump Street, but my parents had given me the green light. They were okay with me seeing R-rated movies.
00:50:59
Speaker
um Not everything. They were still being a little you know cautious, but you kind of... They they did good. yeah I'm not going to sit here and complain about my upbringing. But um we had we had this great idea. We're like...
00:51:12
Speaker
We don't need the parents for 22 Jump Street. We're all going to buy tickets for a PG-13 movie. And then we're going to go sneak into 22 Jump Street. And um on the way to my theater or on the way to the theater, my dad is like, is there a parent going with you guys? Like, I'll go with you to this stupid movie. Like, I'll take everyone. Like, I'll be the chaperone.
00:51:39
Speaker
I'm like, yeah, you know, someone's someone's mom's coming. So we'll be fine. He's like, OK.
00:51:47
Speaker
Famous, almost last words. lie So we're we're in the theater. We go in we're like, oh, my God, it's happening. um But there was like an odd number of us and there was actually a decent amount of people in the theater.
00:51:59
Speaker
And so one of my really just best friends from home, Antonio, was the last guy in the theater. So he got the worst seat. And he ironically was the oldest of all of us. um He was like, he's 18 months older than I am. No, 13 months older than I am.
00:52:15
Speaker
um Same grade, though, ah for reasons. But because I got I skipped a grade by like kind of accident. But um that's not the point. The point is he was the oldest one. and And um so he was mad that he had to sit alone.
00:52:33
Speaker
And so ah the usher got him first.
00:52:40
Speaker
And he like we see the usher like coming with I don't even know how like they found us because this is like a real like rinky dink little theater, you know, no like assigned seats or anything like that.
00:52:55
Speaker
The Escher comes in and goes straight for Antonio and pulls him out. Damn. And when Antonio's leaving, he looks at us and he just goes, he throws his hands up in the air and he goes, now what? There's something to that effect.
00:53:12
Speaker
We're at the, we're still at the part in the parking garage where they're shooting the guns at the very beginning, the very beginning. So, okay, we're going to make it. We're going to make it. The trailer's just finished.
00:53:22
Speaker
Literally not even i don't even think we got to give when the usher comes in. He goes every single one of you in this row needs to leave. And he's like, go to your original movie.
00:53:34
Speaker
I don't know how he found us. I don't know how he did it, but he pulled all of us out. That was a employee of the month. We trying too hard, man. I'm just want to see 22 Jump Street. And these are the rates.
00:53:49
Speaker
We ended up going to see Edge of Tomorrow. Oh, good pick still. With Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Even better. We... I say we, like the group collectively hated it. I liked it. i had a good time.
00:54:00
Speaker
But everybody was so mad that they couldn't see 22 Jump Street. I bet if they rewatched, if they haven't rewatched Edge of Tomorrow now, they'd love it. I didn't see 22 Jump Street until college.
00:54:14
Speaker
And that was the only time I've ever been kicked out of a movie. Great story. Good stuff. Have you done that before? actually think it was like sophomore year high school, not not eighth grade. How about what, Taji?
00:54:25
Speaker
Snuck into a movie? ah Yeah, the first year I moved here, i I mean, so I used to sneak into movies all the time in El Paso. like it It wasn't a hard thing.
00:54:37
Speaker
And the first year I moved to Austin, I had never heard of an Alamo Drafthouse before. And I snuck in and it was so easy. And i understand why now, because they check your so your tickets at the seat.
00:54:48
Speaker
I didn't know that. That's never happened to me before. I didn't know you were supposed to have tickets on your phone. And so I thought I was in the clear, and i was like, oh, easy. So I wasn't stressing at all. The waitress came by, is taking everybody's order.
00:55:01
Speaker
She's like, oh, hey, can I see your tickets? And I thought she was just singling me out. Until I went back to Nalimone, I just realized it's what they did. so all right What movie was it? I couldn't even tell you.
00:55:12
Speaker
This was nearly 11 years ago at this point. Jeez. You old, old man. AARP looking ass.
00:55:21
Speaker
In all my years.
00:55:27
Speaker
All right. Alex, is this your last pick? I got two left. yet to Okay. So are you on the turn right now, though? I am on the turn. Okay. All right. Well, he just did his two. wild card. I'm going to go. Wait, wait, wait, wait,
00:55:40
Speaker
no He just did his two. So it's it's to you, Malik, and then me for my last pick, I think. And then back to Alex. No, no, no, no. These these are Alex's two. I did 22 Jump Street.
00:55:52
Speaker
Oh, shoot. And that's what brought to the conversation. And now it's yeah now it's Alex's last two. My bad. So for my wild card, um I'm going to go... Malik, actually, you you just bought me this movie um for a housewarming gift. Super 8. I knew it!

Speaker
Made like $230 million. dollars Wild card. That's just a movie that does everything fundamentally correct. I saw it and I thought of you and I was like, I hope he picks this. It is such like a vi like small town summer vibes, like.
00:56:25
Speaker
Like coming of age adventure movie that I just I love it. it It it's not like anything unique or original. But it's just such a solid movie. It has great fundamentals. Yeah.
00:56:40
Speaker
It does all the little things right. And the vibes was a huge one. and um And Stranger Things totally ripped it off. Totally ripped it off. 100%. Super 8 came first. Even down to the poster.
00:56:54
Speaker
Even down to the one of the posters of Super 8. Is it the kids on the bike? Yeah. or Yeah. The original run is Stranger Things copied it so hard. So hard.
00:57:04
Speaker
And so when everyone is... I like Stranger Things. I like Stranger Things when it came out. But I always was like a little bit of me was like Super 8. Not getting the love it deserves now. inspired this um and uh it's kind of funny because it's directed by jj abrams and he's now like my public enemy number one yeah but i still love him for it i still love him for super eight do you know what the rotten tomato score is on super eight oh geez i don't know curious that could have been in the uh the misunderstood category because it's definitely underrated
00:57:42
Speaker
81 percent okay <unk>s it's got good ratings i just don't think many people it's just not popular yeah yeah but it's just i mean i've seen that movie each time it's just like a breath of fresh air i like that i like that pick and uh so let go to the misunderstood and do i pick the normal one Or do I pick the one that's like insane? There's a battle and I'm going to say go for the insane one.
00:58:11
Speaker
Same. Alright. This made $365 million dollars and it has a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. Okay, that's not horrible. Oh my god, I know what you're going to 28%? I know what you're going to do. i Okay, go.
00:58:29
Speaker
I haven't seen this movie in like 12 years. Gimme Alvin and the Chipmunks. Damn it, I thought of something else, but that's still really good pick. Gimme Alvin and the Chipmunks.
00:58:41
Speaker
So hated, and I remember loving that movie as a kid. And here's the thing. I remember watching it back to back. Like, it ended, and my parents left the room and didn't eject the DVD, and it started playing again, and I sat through the whole thing a second time.
00:59:00
Speaker
That actually explains a lot. the the music it banged okay to fourth grade me the the amount of hype that movie had like at least in my area was it was huge like alvin the chipmunks was a big deal everybody had all the songs on their ipod nano what um never heard this no i don't think i've ever once heard someone talk about this movie i'm not gonna lie
00:59:29
Speaker
Alvin Hive was was alive in South Kingston, Rhode Island. um And when it came out, like like, just, I don't know, man. It just was, it it was different.
00:59:43
Speaker
You know, it was special. One chipmunk has to go. Who's in it?
00:59:50
Speaker
I mean, honestly, it's probably Alvin. He was the worst one. Alvin, Theodore, and... Simon. Simon. Simon's the nerd.
01:00:04
Speaker
Yeah, Theodore's the fat one.
01:00:08
Speaker
All I remember from that movie is that, if I'm not mistaken, Jesse McCartney played one of them. Maybe. the All their voices sound exactly the same, because it's all pitched up. Yeah, it's all it's all pitched up, so like...
01:00:19
Speaker
I remember another good buddy of mine. We're on the back of the bus coming back from like a field trip. And he was like, yo, he's got this new album, the chipmunk song. He's like grabbing your foot.
01:00:33
Speaker
And it was the Alvin and the Chipmunks version of Crank That by Soulja Boy. Oh, my God. And it was literally just the song. It was like a YouTube rip. someone just had pitched it up.
01:00:46
Speaker
Yeah. but It wasn't an official cover, but it was like the Chipmunks were swearing. I remember the craze of that, just pitching up normal songs and claiming it as Alvin and the Chipmunks. That was definitely ah ah a time period that we lived through.
01:01:02
Speaker
I mean, it was... um And then the ah only other thing I remember from that movie really is like, besides some of the music, there was like a scene where there was like a bunch of cars. And it was like a pretty decent array of cars.
01:01:16
Speaker
I remember thinking like, oh, this movie's peak. Because it had a... Look at the cars. That was it. Look at how loud. Chipmunks and cars, you know? Like, I was... I was like i mean, that was all I needed, really.
01:01:31
Speaker
You know? Speak of truth. Yeah. Speaking of... This is a movie I'll never watch again. I'll never watch again because i feel like it would ruin the mystique where it's like everyone hates on Alvin and the Chipmunks, probably for good reason.
01:01:48
Speaker
But I don't. And I don't ever want to lose that part of myself. um That's beautiful. the The squeak will like I'm not talking about that.
01:02:02
Speaker
It's a great name for a sequel, though. Yes. And and I'm not talking about the third one, which was chip wrecked. Um, we're just talking about the first Alvin and the chipmunks going back to basics.
01:02:14
Speaker
And, uh, that's an overhated movie because it's just, it's not that bad of a kid's movie. It's probably just a bunch of salty parents who were upset because they had to listen to, i had a bad day.
01:02:26
Speaker
Alvin and the chipmunks remix. Um, um Yeah, I'm sure a lot of the hate has to come from parents who are just annoyed. um From children like you that are probably constantly playing.
01:02:40
Speaker
Two times in a row, getting MK-ultured by Alpen and the Chipmunks. Thank you for the in-depth, beautiful story of your passion for Alpen and the Chipmunks.
01:02:52
Speaker
riveting We could have done this episode when I was high on painkillers. That'd be getting really crazy. I'm doing the painkillers episode. All right. This is my last category.
01:03:03
Speaker
Yep. And it's a wild card. Easy choice for me. I know it. I love it. You know it. You love it. I'm going La La Land. Great Great choice.
01:03:14
Speaker
was on one of my lists. Ryan Gosling is here. And he's here to stay. Here to stay. Yeah. And he's here to stay. Beautiful soundtrack. Great performances.
01:03:24
Speaker
I love the story. It flows very well. And I cried like a baby the first time I saw it. Yep. That movie's dangerous for for guys who like to be sad. Yeah.
01:03:35
Speaker
And i think, honestly, I think I watched it pretty late. The first time I saw it was in like peak COVID, like in 2020. I'd say I was a i say i was a a little bit of a sad person.
01:03:50
Speaker
A little, yeah. At time. Yeah, and so I watched it for the first time, and it just... stuck a knife in me and just wiggled it around yeah and twisted it. So absolute cinema.
01:04:04
Speaker
Agreed. and And that wraps up my draft. All right. For his final two categories. Uh, just one. Sorry. Okay. Uh, yeah, just my wild card pick.
01:04:16
Speaker
Ultimately, this was an easy choice. This actually could have fallen under the misunderstood and misunderstood ah category, but it's my wild card. and And it is How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey. I will take any opportunity in my life to glaze this movie.
01:04:33
Speaker
It is wildly underappreciated, wildly misunderstood. and i think it's genius. And I think it really highlights you know the the capability that we have as humans to...
01:04:50
Speaker
Push creative boundaries that maybe shouldn't have been pushed. However, this just did like, it was just like the perfect storm of nonsense.
01:05:02
Speaker
Like even just down to Carrey's accent. Like it's, yeah it's unidentifiable. There's no one in this world that has ever existed that speaks like he does in this movie.
01:05:15
Speaker
And I think it's just brilliant. And I love this movie to death. That is my favorite Christmas movie. Talk about movies that were made on crack. I think 100%.
01:05:27
Speaker
yeah what is a Can you give us a favorite scene you have from How the Grinch Stole Christmas? If you had to pick one up out of the money. had to pick...
01:05:37
Speaker
The schedule is an easy an easy pick, um like is his daily itinerary. yeah I think the the introduction to him when he's he's entering the city with his cloak, causing havoc, handing you know saws to children, saying to run. That's good. I don't know, it's just good stuff.
01:05:57
Speaker
Really wholesome family fun.

Trends in Blockbusters and Comedy Challenges

01:06:00
Speaker
One of my favorite scenes is ah towards the end when they kind of start inaugurating him into the into the parade. i think you know what I was talking about. And all the Who's are feeding him food. And it's just kind of cutting between like all the food they're stuffing in his mouth. In the chair of cheer.
01:06:15
Speaker
Yeah, and that in the chair of cheer. And there's it's literally three seconds. It's three seconds of this movie that just makes me cry. The guy leans up, he goes, this is not pudding. He says, what is it? Just shoves it in his mouth. okay think the scene that lives rent-free in my head is where the camera's like kind of down at like crotch angle.
01:06:34
Speaker
Crotch level and it's like pointed up and he's like going in and out of the camera. Oh yeah. That's a good one. Like what is happening? I think about it like month. I haven't this movie in years.
01:06:47
Speaker
That's a great pick. Are those all the categories? That's it. All right. I think we've got pretty solid teams. So um we'll go through one by one, list the category, and then your pick.
01:06:58
Speaker
And then we can wrap it up with some ah just some comments, maybe from some patterns that we saw with with these movies. And if you want to talk a little bit about your alternatives, we can take a couple minutes to do that. So I'll kick us off.
01:07:12
Speaker
For 1990s, picked Jurassic Park. Mega Blockbuster, Dune 2, Misunderstood, Clash of the Titans, Oscar nominee, Parasite, Comedy, 22 Jump Street, Action, Thunderbolts, and for my wild card, La La Land.
01:07:29
Speaker
All right, I'll go next. 1990s, The Matrix, Mega Blockbuster, Avengers Infinity War, Misunderstood, Transformers 2, Revenge of the Fallen.
01:07:40
Speaker
um but Sorry, not Transformers 2, just Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen. Oscar nominee, The Social Network, Comedy, Rush Hour, Action Slash Thriller, Mission Impossible Fallout, Wild Card, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
01:07:54
Speaker
And I had for the 1990s, I had seven Oscar Life of Pi Wildcard Super 8 Comedy Shrek 2 Action Slash Thriller Ocean's Eleven ah Mega Blockbuster Top Gun Maverick and then Misunderstood Alvin and the Chipmunks.
01:08:13
Speaker
I don't know about this one, guys. this is i I like all of our teams. They're strong. It was fun. They're strong teams. It a good draft. Yeah. um One thing I wanted to bring up that I noticed specifically in the comedy genre is, one, the lack of...
01:08:32
Speaker
I mean, this goes beyond the comedy. So the first note I have is ah the lack of original IP in the list of movies that have made over 100 million. Now, we did get one recently, and that's Sinners.
01:08:44
Speaker
But a majority of these movies that are in like the top 500 are all based off something, whether that be a superhero or a sequel. Right.
01:08:57
Speaker
So I thought that was interesting. And specifically for comedies, the last original comedy that we had that grossed over 100 million was The Lost City in 2022 with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock.
01:09:11
Speaker
I was kind of surprised to see that that actually made over $100 million. um The one before that was in 2019 with Hustlers. And the one before that was in 2017 with Girls Trip.
01:09:23
Speaker
So very far and few between. And I haven't seen any of those. Yeah, for original comedies that i've made. yeah the The last couple original comedies I saw, I thought, stunk.
01:09:35
Speaker
Yeah, they I just... If you kind of go back from... maybe like 2000 to 2013, there's a good chunk of original comedies that that made over 100 million.
01:09:48
Speaker
I mean, you've got you've got due date. These are these are some of my alternatives. You got due date, game night, horrible bosses, just to name a few. But they were a lot more consistent, I feel. And hang a lot out of the comedy, they just they just did. we We we lost the sauce or something. I'm not sure.
01:10:04
Speaker
i just thought I thought that was interesting. think um jokes are also just hard to write and that probably leads to the fact that with uh i guess the the shift in social norms i i don't know if they want to use that as an excuse but it's the left guess i'm telling you more more limiting factors i guess the left wants to make comedy illegal I'm joking, by the way. Woke people killed comedy.
01:10:34
Speaker
and I'm not even saying that like the movies back then were actually funny. Some of them were. mean, there's a lot of unfunny stuff there. for sure. yeah But I think in general, jokes are hard to write.
01:10:45
Speaker
Yeah, maybe we just pumped out more comedies, so it was more likely for one out of ten to hit. I don't know. They are pretty cheap to make, I think.
01:10:56
Speaker
Yeah. The last original comedy I saw in theaters, I was going through my um my letterbox like year in review lists. ah It's 2023 Joyride.
01:11:10
Speaker
I didn't see that one. That one's got Stephanie Hsu. Yep. Yeah, I did not see it. Was it good? good ah thought it was terrible. Sick. That's shame. that's a shame it had like one of those it had that trope in it where it was just like Just hate it.
01:11:28
Speaker
ah hate the, or it's like the, the loser friend who messes everything up and then blames you. And then it's like, well, i guess it is my fault. Cause I'm good. Like, hate that.
01:11:39
Speaker
Yeah. I hate it so much. Um, and it was just, I did not think it was funny. And I tried to. I tried to give it a good shot. And everyone in my theater was laughing.
01:11:52
Speaker
And I just was like, was pissed. i can't believe I wasted two and a half hours. That's a long movie. It wasn't that long. It felt long. It was only 94 minutes. It's an hour and 34 minutes. I'm like, was and half hours.
01:12:08
Speaker
That's how bad it was.

Debating Misunderstood Films and Movie Ratings

01:12:10
Speaker
I think for my alternates, I only wanted to bring up a couple. And those were both in my misunderstood. So I wanted to share with you guys the other one that I was debating for misunderstood ah for the arts versus charts that I do still love. But that movie was the cat in the hat.
01:12:26
Speaker
Never seen it, but I've heard. you've never seen the cat in the hat? I've heard. It's a crazy pick. The horror stories. If you love the Grinch, I think you'll love the cat in the hat. You think?
01:12:38
Speaker
That's a funny movie. I love that movie. I mean, I do like Mike Myers. Yeah. Like, I love Austin Powers, but. And then the other one, Alex, which I thought you were going to do because this also has 28% on Rotten Tomatoes was Ghost Rider.
01:12:52
Speaker
Ah. Yeah, I haven't seen Ghost Rider. That's okay. Yeah.
01:13:00
Speaker
ah my um My alternates, I only had three, and one of them was an alternate for two categories. um So for Misunderstood, i had Fast and Furious, so the fourth one.
01:13:13
Speaker
okay Okay. 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, 360 million. It's not that bad. It's not a 29%. It's not. That was literally it. It's the one where they go to Mexico and they're like in the tunnels. Uh-huh.
01:13:26
Speaker
Yeah. The cars are good in that one. It's like kind of stupid. They're all stupid. i mean, not all of them. Of like the first five, which I consider like canon before it went off the rails, um it's the worst of the first five.
01:13:44
Speaker
Yeah. by far. I think being sandwiched between Tokyo Drift and Fast Five is also a problem. Yeah. Yeah. And it's not like dumb enough to be as good as too fast, too furious because too fast, too furious is like so stupid that it's actually incredible.
01:14:03
Speaker
But it is peak cinema. I mean, like it's just bangers nonstop. Ejecto Cito cuz like that's awesome.
01:14:14
Speaker
Miami, like it's like a real life Grand Theft Auto Vice City movie. Forget about it, cuz. you
01:14:24
Speaker
pockets ain't empty cur um but like the the fact as much as disappointing as fast and furious is it is not a 29 on rotten tomatoes it is like a six out of ten yeah that's kind of harsh yeah for sure yeah give it at least like 45 percent Yeah. A solid 40. Yeah. Give it like, give it like a strong F. Like, at least you got some right, you know?
01:14:53
Speaker
in Mega Blockbuster and Action and Thriller, I had 300. Oh, I thought about that one. That's a classic. That really is. There's a dude's movie.
01:15:04
Speaker
That's absolutely. That is such a dude's movie. And my my very thing about it is whenever my dad talk about whenever my dad and I talk about 300, this is we always bring this up because both of us are history, history nerds.

Appreciating Unexpected Movie Gems

01:15:19
Speaker
It's like 300 is all like, you know, like the freedom of Greece and Sparta. We're fighting for freedom. Sparta was like an extreme oligarchy and repressive society.
01:15:32
Speaker
It was like the least free city state in all of Greece.
01:15:37
Speaker
And it's like we got Gerald Butler like democracy. like Yeah. But the movie still rips. The movie still rips. then... and then My backup for Wildcard, and this was, I did not expect this to have made as much as it did. It it made about the same as Super 8, so like $250 to $290
01:15:58
Speaker
two thousand eleven s ranngo I want to watch it. i haven't yet. Rango's good. Rango is sneaky good. Yeah. Like sneaky really good actually.
01:16:12
Speaker
and the first time was right The first time I saw Rango I actually was in Vegas and the night before drank a little too much and had alcohol poisoning 100% and blacked out. But so I was incapacitated that next day in the hotel room. I wasted an entire day in a hotel room and I watched Rango and it made me feel a little bit better. I was like, whoa, nice.
01:16:38
Speaker
Johnny Depp, right? Yeah. Yeah. First time I watched it, I wasn't whelmed. I was whelmed. I liked it. The second time I watched it, um I was living in Houston at the time, and I watched it, and I was like, this is actually like a really good Western.
01:16:57
Speaker
Like, really good. um There's some like odd bits in it that just put it over the top, and like, this is actually a really good movie. Yeah. Like the Clint Eastwood callback. yeah there's There's a Hunter S. Thompson Easter egg.
01:17:10
Speaker
um A little fear and loathing right at the beginning. And it's just so weird. And there's also one of my favorite character designs of all time in it. Rattlesnake Jake.
01:17:23
Speaker
So cool. It's a sick character design. I'll be interested to hear your feedback on it, Tachi, because having the rattle on a rattlesnake be um revolver barrels that shoot... Is really cool.
01:17:36
Speaker
It's so cool. That sounds really cool. I will report back soon. What were some of your alternate stats? Yeah, I'll just highlight a couple. um For comedy, I almost went with ah Pitch Perfect, just because I'm a sucker for musicals, and...
01:17:54
Speaker
That movie's a banger. I like the perfect. I think I don't remember the, I think the second was also pretty good. Right. I do. I do like pitch perfect. Yeah. It's a fun time.
01:18:05
Speaker
Um, and then for action thriller, I had a, had a bunch that I really struggled to pick between, but fallout's just perfect. Um, that was John wick.
01:18:16
Speaker
Born Identity and The Departed. So i I would have happy been debating The Departed. and Departed is awesome. Yeah. The Departed is also a dude movie. I'm not a cop. Lots of 100 million dudes movies.
01:18:31
Speaker
Dudes will show up to the cinema to watch other dudes. If they're represented, they will come. Dudes for dudes.
01:18:39
Speaker
I mean, I think most of The Departed's box office also probably came from like Boston dudes. Yeah. like The Red Sox lost tonight. I'm go watch the Departed again.
01:18:53
Speaker
Boston Hive is strong. Cool. Well, I think that about wraps up this episode. Any final thoughts from you guys?

Reflecting on Draft Choices and Future Speculations

01:19:02
Speaker
I'll be here to see if we get our news correct.
01:19:04
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's gonna be fun. Truth. Be honest. How do you think you're going to do on this draft? Who do you think is gonna win? mean, I got to advocate for myself, so I'm going to pick me, but you guys have good lists. so I feel like I had a really, really strong base, and I lost it with Alvin and the Chipmunks. You kind of went off the rails there for a second.
01:19:28
Speaker
Shrek 2 could make up for it, though. It could. It certainly could. The Shrek 2 pick, I think, is ah it's um it'll hide any deficiencies within the starting lineup. Yeah, huge crowd favorite.
01:19:40
Speaker
I think my weakest leak is hold them up Clash of the Titans. But thank you guys for kind ah convincing me to so pick that one. I feel good with it. what What was the alternate again?
01:19:52
Speaker
The cat in the hat. Oh, that's right. Yeah, Clash of the Titans is probably better anyways. I'd say so. Awesome. Well, that was our second

01:20:38
Speaker
We do it over Fort and people can call in while we play Fortnite. Yeah, like we're playing Fortnite and reviewing something. We'll review Fortnite the movie when they inevitably make it. Oh.
01:20:50
Speaker
You know, you can actually probably make a half decent kids movie out of Fortnite. I 100% believe you can, and 100% think they will. Can you imagine if Illumination made It won't be good. Illumination? Yeah.
01:21:02
Speaker
I think that'd be the wrong studio, but I can't imagine it. We would need DreamWorks to do it and we would need like DreamWorks Shrek 2 department to do it. I think it would need to be an Avengers style of animation studios and they would need to not care about who's getting how much money and just make something cool.
01:21:19
Speaker
Oh, that would be incredible. Could you imagine? they all teamed up. Yeah. Can you imagine if Hayao Miyazaki's actual last thing was collaborating on the Fortnite movie? Yeah. Don't put that into the universe, please.
01:21:32
Speaker
Please. Not him.
01:21:37
Speaker
Sabrina Carpenter is having a shootout with Ponyo.
01:21:44
