Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to The Daily pal Podcast. We're brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. I am your host today, Dan Tanner, and I am joined by, joined today by Wale Bakari.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you doing, big man?

Birthday Reflections and Acknowledgments

00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh Before we stop, a slightly belated happy birthday as well from yet the other day. Hope it was a good one.
00:00:31
Wale Bakare
yeah Yes, it was it was boring. I was just working. I was that even at some point. I forgot it was my birthday, but thanks. Well,
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
well we yeah But it's only for through the WhatsApp group. so ah ah But that's a bit of a shame it wasn't ah a a good one.
00:00:49
Wale Bakare
I don't even know, I don't even know how Joe, I don't even know how Joe found out the character.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But either way,
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
well we're going to have to have a word with him when he comes back because he's been hacking something.

Game Preview: Palestine vs West Ham

00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's hope that Palestine get you and a i birthday present, sort of ah good win against West Ham.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is one of the things we're going to talk about today. So a little while we're going to go through some team news for both sides, how how we think the game is going to go. We're also going to talk about the new West Ham dapper because they have a new one, which just happens to be an ex Brighton manager. So of course he has to have his managerial debut for West Ham against Palace. So we'll have a little bit of a chin wag on that. And then finally, as it is a preview show, we will go and give our score predictions and maybe a couple of key players that might have an impact on the game on the weekend.

Team Updates and Player Recalls

00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to start off with the team news for Palace, the Palace injury list hasn't really changed that much. Most of the regular guys have been out for a while, like Wharton and so on.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
they're not going to be coming back anytime soon. Loma will not be available due to sickness after he came off in, I think it was the previous match, after about 20 minutes or so. So he'll be unavailable due to illness. Also on the illness list, Mateta, Eze, Hughes, and Mitchell. There seems to be something spreading in that training ground. that I don't know why so many are coming down with these bad in the sort of illnesses and stuff but those guys should be available but one of the more irritating ones especially for me is that and Shalaba will no longer be uh selectable as he has been recalled by Chelsea. Well what is your kind of reaction to Chelsea cancelling the loan deal and taking back Shalaba at this point in the season?
00:02:59
Wale Bakare
Well, unfortunately, this is this nine times out of 10, this is a point that you get to do it. It was their prerogative. It was a decision only they could make, and they chose to make it. couple of weeks, I think last week when it came up, I was quite confident that it wasn't going to happen. But anyway, they've decided to do it. It's definitely not good for Palace, not good for the player, except it's going to get, you know, playing time.
00:03:27
Wale Bakare
When he returns chelsea, of course struggling with a bout of injuries with their defenders at the moment So maybe we'll get some playing time, but it's settled in pretty well into the palace team after a very shaky start, of course it was uh, it wasn't entirely fit and or much fit when he uh joined at the start of the season, but It's done great at the back got some decisive goals for palace three goals. It's got um um already this season so It's definitely going to be a huge loss, but just as Glasner said, thankfully it's happening at the time. Chadder Riyadh is coming back into the squad, but remember that
00:04:06
Wale Bakare
um um Riyadh was available when Palace went for Chaloba, so it was going to be, you know, the two of them that the team wanted, but now Riyadh is back. Hopefully he regains fitness as quickly as possible. But off the showing of what we saw, ah you you know, against Leicester, Gaye, Lacroix, and Richard, it's not a bad combination, with the Nathaniel Cline, you know, feeling in that back three.
00:04:32
Wale Bakare
Riyadh's availability is a good one as well, St. Jefferson Lemma also filling that back three, so Palace will be fine although Salova will definitely be missed considering his contributions in the first half of the season.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh definitely because he's

Debate: Chelsea's Transfer Strategy

00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
scored at least a good few goals for us because we we've got some great sort of goal scoring defenders. Mine's more the fact that it's really cheeky from Chelsea just to sort of write recall him in the middle of the season when they kind of have an abundance of players and we're in the middle of a transfer window so I think they're going on the logic that they can just bring back the
00:05:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
the the loan deal, just cancel that completely but and then try, it instead of trying to sign a new player, they've already got essentially one on their books already. So just bring him back across, across London and slot him in there.
00:05:14
Wale Bakare
what
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I was under the impression, the whole point of the loan deal for Caliber was to get in game time. So I'm not sure where the thought process is.
00:05:33
Wale Bakare
but
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've said they're going to give him time, get game time, but I'm not sure on that.
00:05:36
Wale Bakare
Well, maybe...
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I really sort of, they've got, couple of sort of kids that are coming up from the system in that same position. So I'm not sure how much game time you're actually going to have.
00:05:52
Wale Bakare
Well, we haven't we haven't seen the books at Chelsea. they They maybe looked at their books and thought you know that was a you know better business decision to make other than bringing some money. And bringing some money in December, I mean, in January is always tough. Will they fit in? Will they deliver?
00:06:07
Wale Bakare
What if they get injured? Well, we've got someone just across town. We have the choice to bring him back. It's it sad for Palace, of course, but I guess that's part of the it's probably the downside of you know getting players on loan. that There is always that option. Clubs can't decide to recall them. I think it was, I can't remember, I think it was Liverpool a couple of seasons ago, or maybe last season, recall the player from from the the Scottish League and I think was Rangers and he still never got game time anyway but but then you know it's the choice of the parent club to make and Chelsea have made the choice. I'm sure last night we'll find a way for Palace moving forward.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you say that, just remember I think Palace brought back one that was an on loan at Oxford a couple of weeks ago. So me up on my high horse, Chelsea being cheeky, Palace do exactly the same thing. So I might just rein that one back in

West Ham's Injury Concerns

00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
a little bit. But on the other side of the pitch, and the West Ham injury situation isn't much better. than Boeing is not available.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Antonio obviously still isn't going to be available for a while and full crew is also all out our injured plus I think there's a few more that have probably been niggling around for a while um um and lastly Somerville with a thigh injury is doubtful but I think they seem to be making go to be making an assessment probably fairly early Saturday morning before the game.
00:07:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
After hearing all of those sort of team news there, well i how do you think the game is going to sort of play out with all those sort of, there's some pretty big names that aren't going to be ah available for both teams or at least questionable at the very least.
00:08:07
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, yeah you're you're totally right. However, there's still you know a number of players that are are going to be available as well. Of course, West Ham will be missing some of these names, you know, the players. Fulcrum is one that they will miss the most, because after Antonio's accident and Fulcrum is beginning to settle into that number nine role, it was fantastic last season.
00:08:35
Wale Bakare
with Borussia Dortmund, you know, de-grained the Champions League in a couple of games I saw him play. the the The last game against Fulham, Westam started with Lucas Paqueta playing, you know, the 4-9 position. They got a number of goals in that game against Fulham, 3-2 handed. They lost, that was, ah ah that they lost Porto's first game was against Aston Villa. They did good in the first half, but then they They then, you know, couldn't hold them to the resort. But yeah, there will be
00:09:08
Wale Bakare
interesting names missing in the in the lineup, but ah ah you know, Western have got a talented squad still. Marmot Caduceus is is a player I love watching. They've got Solaire, the Spaniard. They've got Paqueta, of course, Aaron Wambisaka. These are players, you know, Wambisaka is very much known to Palace fans. These are players that, you know, could decide a game and they they give it all.
00:09:36
Wale Bakare
It's a game that's coming at a time where Palace are you know gathering some momentum. Palace have lost just one in the last 10 in the Premier League, although it's been four wins in that period. But ah I said to Alex the other day, this is a game where Palace have scores to settle. They lost their home to Westam at the start of the season. They will be looking at doing you know getting one over Westam.
00:10:01
Wale Bakare
Graham Porter, fantastic manager ah from his time at Brighton.

Graham Potter's Future at West Ham

00:10:05
Wale Bakare
Didn't find out too good for him at Chelsea. Maybe, know, last night was saying in his press, in his presser, maybe he should have been given more time. But that's not something you get a lot these days in football. ah So understandably, results weren't going his way at Chelsea. He was fired. But of what he showed at Brighton, we know he's a talented manager. We know he understands the game is one that can you know, cook up a game plan and, ah you know, and if the players buy into it, you you're looking at a very formidable team. Luckily, it's just a couple of weeks into his reign, you know, at Western. So maybe, just maybe, they they will still be a bit disjointed and
00:10:47
Wale Bakare
Not entirely buttoning to its principles. But as I said, Palis are in a good form of their own. Glastonite is also a no slouch. It's also one that can cook up a game plan. Palis have enjoyed playing away from Ohm sometimes this season. I think there's been three wins and three drops. Palis have gotten away from Ohm this season. so You know, this is a result that the boys will be backing themselves. They can get in it will be a tricky game to to navigate. But I won't be surprised if you know Palace go on and get a good result at least get a draw. But a victory will be a fantastic result for Palace.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, pretty much very much in the same vein. We need to definitely settle a couple of scores now. the the rest The reverse fixtures from the beginning of the season start to come around now and we didn't play we weren't playing at our best when they came to Celos Park. I seem to remember that we started off very tentatively and didn't really get much better and that was a lot of what we were talking about in the early days of the season. So it's sir we We need to start getting going somewhere. We're starting to go up into the position where we should be, sort of that 10th to 14th kind of position. So it's starting to go that way. So ah ah fairly confident on on this weekend.
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you also alluded to Graham Potter there, which is a nice segue into our next section.

00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I'm still talking to Walle Bakari. So we are now going to bring go on to our next section, which Walle slightly alluded to a few moments ago. We're talking about Graham Potters, appointment as manager of West Ham. the other i think was it I think it was last week or within the last i few days after West Ham sacking Lobertegi. They had brought in X,
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton and Chelsea gaffer Graham Potter and of course his first league game for West Ham is against Palace the ex Brighton manager of course it is. so as oh why What are your kind of thoughts on Graham Potter and the appointment at West Ham? Do you think it's a good fit for him? you think he probably could Is it a good fit for him? Is it a good fit for West Ham? What are your kind of immediate reactions to sort his appointment really?
00:14:13
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, I just want to say very, very quickly, you know, his first league game was actually the win against Fulham. You know, well, because I can forgive you because there was a mid-read game.
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
what I'd be lied to by the media.
00:14:25
Wale Bakare
Because it was a mid-read game. Yeah, his first game was the FA couple, the first league game was the midweek win against Fulham. But um to try answer your question, he's one of those ex exciting ones, you know, um a lot of ah lot of football fans quite enjoyed what he did at Brighton.
00:14:48
Wale Bakare
the opportunity at Chelsea came and then he took it and maybe you took it at the wrong time because of how things, you know, panned out. but you I'm sure if he had stayed at Brighton it would have add continued that performance at Brighton where before, i would you know, achieving at that time it would eventually have gotten and maybe the Chelsea job or another job. So I'm sure you wouldn't look at the Chelsea stint and think maybe it was the wrong decision but It's one of those ones that that you're pretty excited about. It's kind of football is is ex exciting. It's pragmatic sometimes. ah ah is It finds a way to you know bring the best out of.
00:15:30
Wale Bakare
you know, talented players, Karami Toma was on fire, you know, under him, the likes of, although you could argue that, you know, all of these players have also gone on to do great on the, you know, subsequent Brighton managers, Roberto D'Serbi and Ursula was currently there. So it has to, it's something that, you know, the way they work at the club, but Porter specifically did great at Brighton, didn't have the time to settle at Chelsea.
00:16:00
Wale Bakare
There were a couple of talks about impossible becoming the England manager. That was how highly thought of it was you know amongst the know amongst football fans and the and the media particularly. But it's gotten this Western job. We will have to wait to see how it goes. ah For West Ham I was saying you know the other time about West Ham,
00:16:24
Wale Bakare
Obviously, they got tired of the the style of football that you know, that team were playing on the David Moyes, they weren't the worst side, they played in Europe five out of seven seasons, I think, they won the Europa Conference League, ah got to the semi final of the Europa League. You know, they they had some interesting nights or amazing nights in Europe so ah ah that that's something they haven't had in in in a number of years but for some reason they had issues with your performance of David Moyers his relationship with the fans just wasn't the greatest remember it was the second stint at the club as well so and since so every time Moyers has left they've
00:17:10
Wale Bakare
you know, they've just not been able to to get it right. left They wanted him out the other time. Things didn't go so great for them. Then, you know, ah they they brought him back again. Now, they then they went for Julian Lepitagu, you know,
00:17:24
Wale Bakare
i had to leave walls because of the financials financial situation of the club. But ah ah he's just not been able to you know get things right. We cannot doubt the ability of Gillian Lefetego as a great manager, done great at Spain, coached the biggest teams in the world, coached Madrid at some point.
00:17:46
Wale Bakare
so we cannot doubt his abilities but for some reason things just didn't work out so it's it's not really a question of ability here so Porter has the ability whether it will work out for him it's something only time will tell but I'm pretty hopeful for him for his sake to to have a you know a good run at the at West Ham considering how things ended at Chelsea because it's only a matter of time before you know it begins to build you know and a name amongst fans saying maybe what it was a fluke what happened at Brighton but it really wants to you know do well at Westerman maybe just maybe they will do well I don't care but I don't want to use the word I'm hopefully does or I'm hoping it does but ah you know of just off from the from the perspective of ah you know loving the game and someone who obviously has you know exciting attacking ideas about the game and the kind of you know
00:18:49
Wale Bakare
lessons that instill in players. I'm really, I'm rooting for him so to speak.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah very much just sort of the same lineup. He's a decent enough manager. Don't really have any real gripes against him except for being an ex Brighton gaffer. Just that out of principle. You're not allowed to. It's that simple until he turns up at Palace and all is forgiven. But um he's a yeah, decent enough one. I think he's definitely more suited to say a mid-table team where he gets a kind of control a little bit of more of what is actually going on on a bit more of a day-to-day basis because at Chelsea it's they have ambitions of winning the title and competing at the very top level if you don't do that immediately you're going to be out the door if they're willing to sack Jose Mourinho two or three times because he doesn't do it you have no hope if you're
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was also, at the I think at the time, when he was actually announced as the Chelsea manager, I was thinking this is very much a, is Chelsea just getting in because he's flavor of the month? Very much a, he was he turned Brighton into sort of a real contender in a very, very short amount of time. And I think it was very much a, Chelsea just wanted to get the next big thing.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the next big England manager, so English man, because I think he was one of the better ones at the time. So it's like, oh, we want to promote this guy up and and it just didn't really work out. But yeah, as I said, decent enough manager. He's sort of fairly progressive in the way he sort of plays the game. He's not stuck in this sort of. in one-way style English english football of just boot it down the pitch. You will play some exciting football. You'll mix it up a bit. So I'm expecting him to do fairly well at West Ham. Just, can you not do it on the weekend? Can you not do it afterwards? Can you do it in the next game? Not one not when we're playing, because we kind of want the win this weekend. Sorry to break...
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
spoil the party a little bit is what I'm kind of like hoping for. Is there anything else I wanted to bring up on that? Not really. So I think that is not a bad place to ah move move on. We'll take a quick a break to thank the network. And then once we come back, we'll get our score predictions and maybe a couple of key players for both sides that might up pose some kind of a impact it in the game. So we'll be right back after this. Match Predictions and Key Players

00:22:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So last bit, as this is the preview to the weekend,
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
is the score predictions and some key players that might make an impact. while i what What are your score predictions and who do you think is going to be making making the making waves in the game?
00:22:36
Wale Bakare
I've really, I don't think it's one of those games where it will be, you know, drab draw or just the one-goal game. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a couple of goals in the game. I'm tempted to say might end up in a too old draw, but maybe Palace might be able to make it, but I think a 2-2 result, that's why I'm looking out for this weekend.
00:23:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was tending to agree as well because we are starting to score now and somewhat on a regular basis too. We've got Metaxas starting to get on form, SARS starting to get...
00:23:12
Wale Bakare
And for some reason we keep on cheating as well.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the problem is we keep conceding. Yeah, we we really, really struggle in keeping a clean sheet. And West Ham, as we've literally just been mentioning, they have a new gaffer. So these guys are going to be out to try and impress. Yeah, they're trying to get some regular team football. So yeah, I'm kind of also leaning to a really sort of exciting and entertaining 2-2. I just I don't see it being a drab game.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
not any I don't see Palace doing drab games anymore, sort of sitting back.
00:23:47
Wale Bakare
Do you know what? Do you know what?
00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:23:49
Wale Bakare
Do you know what? I'll go 2-1 Palace actually.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
You want to go 2-1, you're going to change it, are you?
00:23:54
Wale Bakare
Yeah, I'll go 2-1 Palace actually.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, all right.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah You can change it, you haven't put it in stone yet, so you're all right. um um So what are some of the key players you think are going to make an impact to them? Two or three from like both sides.
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So who do you think the West Ham players are going to make an impact?
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then and then obviously the Palace ones.
00:24:17
Wale Bakare
well
00:24:20
Wale Bakare
But personally, I find Moamud Kudus the most exciting in that Western team. Of course, with Jared Bo and Mison, Moamud Kudus is the one that can create something out of nothing. It's the one that can take the game by the scruff of the neck. It has a way of doing that. From his days at Ajax, I remember him at the World Cup against Portugal almost seemed like he had different business.
00:24:49
Wale Bakare
You know, on his mind, even though Ghana were going to lose the game, he I think got two goals late on in the game and could easily have gotten the equalizer for Ghana or the winner. I can't remember what the result was. I remember in the in the in the last Nations Cup against Egypt, it's got to go out of nothing. Almost got to go out of nothing against Liverpool the other day, you know while the game was still quite close at the start. It's just that type of player. So for me, it's it's the most dangerous of the in the in that team at the moment. Of course, the obvious names, Lucas Paqueta is another one. He's able to conjure magic on his day as well. He's got the Brazilian flag, got the intelligence, although he's a
00:25:27
Wale Bakare
is temperament sometimes, you know, gets in the way of his talent, but he's one that he's able to, you know, ah weep up some magic as well. So, kudus, paketa, depending on who's, well, I realize doubtful it would be from Beyanski in Go, because, yeah you know, but more often than a couple of times these days we're saying that the goalkeeper's saves are proving really crucial. From Beyanski as a way of having a blind of the game when he wants to as well. so
00:25:59
Wale Bakare
I think the goalkeeper would be important for Western as well, especially with, you know, Palace's prowess from set pieces, as we've seen in the last couple of weeks, and, and you know, Jean-Philippe Mateta looking like he's getting back to some form. So those are the three players i be I'll be going for, Paqueta, Kudu, and of course, whoever is in goal from Beanski, most likely, you know, for Western. For Palace, obviously, Eze,
00:26:28
Wale Bakare
is it's well, we will all know about Eze's abilities. I was reading some of the thoughts or some of the Palace fans after the win against Leicester and there were some questions about him dangling too long on the ball not having enough not having of any enough effect on the game as you would wish to but I'm there thinking well you've gone away the team's gone away to less than I've won it's not going to have a great game every time yes it didn't have a great start to the season it began to get back into it got injured at a time and you know it's been a start stop start season for him but
00:27:06
Wale Bakare
on his day, he can take on anyone. He could easily play you know in any side in the Premier League, maybe not start for maybe the likes of CT Liverpool, but he could easily get into you know any team in the Premier League and he's won. It's the obvious choice for the most dangerous player possibly for uh palace john phillip mattetta uh if he's in that beastie mode that we know he can get into it's a handful for any defense is running the channels winning every aerial duel it's one to look out for one player that's been playing great of of recent although is doubtful for this game is the senegalese smilosa
00:27:49
Wale Bakare
you know is is creating chances, getting assists. His finishing looks quite good. you know If he gets you know a run on goal, he's most likely going to bury it. So actually we just don't know whether he will be part of the of the game.

glass i did see earlier that ah ah he's doubtful but if he does play then that's another player a can that can but if he doesn't then Daniel Munoz has won his energy on the wing is something the Palace have enjoyed so far you know this season he's gotten a couple of goals for himself as well he's taken some interesting positions you know in the box he's been able to you know it's just been an handful for opposition midfielders and defenders and That's one that you know a Western would have to look out for as well.

I would probably agree with you definitely on the palace front though it's the usual suspects when it comes to the palace one hour that are going to be the playmakers and Eze is definitely starting to do get into get into himself a little bit more. Instead of being this player that takes on everybody, he's starting to work as a team it's not work with his top teammates. He's starting to play off Matata. He's starting to play off of whoever's in the central midfield instead of just trying to take the ball and take on the entire team himself, which I think is a marked improvement from what he was trying to do at the beginning of the season and and taking 35-yard screamers.

just to try because he can't... so that was the only option that he could think of but so his set piecing his but piece taking especially with Gehi's goal the other day was a very very lovely sort of weighted pass it was absolutely perfect so when it comes to Palace it's the usual suspects yeah as a Mateta Gehi definitely gonna have to have a a solid game as always now that Shalabar's not there. So he's probably gonna have to pick up a little bit of a slack there. as so As any good captain, sort of make sure you're solid at the back. Because but as we've also mentioned earlier, we have a great habit of struggling to keep a clean sheet. But on the West Ham side, I sort of have the opinion that Thomas Sushak will probably be a

He's just he's just a constant presence in West Ham. He just the engine that keeps it going. He is going to make that central midfield an absolute war zone and really, really fight for every ball. Just he's just one of those guys. He can also get a few goals here and there, just sort of that sort of. In a set piece, he's just going to get up and there's used sort of it all of that strength to just. So get a sort of a yeah, a heavy goal in or just even be a real sort of target man in the box. But my slight long shot when it comes to a key player will be Solaire just because he is a really soft, he's a very technically gifted winger, very intelligent. He also, I think he scored the other day as well, so we might be up for it too.

but yeah he's been ah ah he's been around a while. He's played on PSG, Valencia, so he's played at the top top end of the game. He is not a slouch but he is kind of slightly overlooked when it comes to sort of the premierships, sort of top wingers. he can consult He's not going to always show up but when he does he can be a real nuisance, very sort of very talented, very intelligent player. But yeah, and as I was saying earlier, like the game, I'm expecting this to be a entertaining 2-2. You're going 2-1. Well, let's see if Palace can get you a good birthday present and get you a nice ah ah ah ah nice win. And hopefully, yeah, Palace and Liverpool, because I know you're a Liverpool fan. Sorry, everybody here to break the illusion.

So let's see if we can't get a couple of good wins for you. And on that note, I think it's a nice place to end it there.
