Episode 20. Another special. 20% to 100, then the show can officially be done. and
00:00:44
Jacob Oak
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. That's not the attitude we want. Anyways, today's episode is brought to you by Nuri. Just kidding, it's not. just We got these at Costco. Shout out Costco.
00:00:59
Jacob Oak
Be cool if Costco sponsored us. But that would be cool. Ultra filtered milkshake, 30 grams of protein, one gram of sugar, 150 calories. You know. You love those things now. I like these a lot. They're good. I think they're a little better than like the premier protein I was drinking. So I don't know. It's all a crapshooter. I'm here.

Entrepreneurial Lessons Introduction

00:01:27
Jacob Oak
Episode 20. So we told the audience that every 10 episodes we were going to do a fun 10 things episode, maybe in episode 30, we should get some audience feedback to see what they want to hear us talk about 10 things we like maybe. But for this episode, Kaylee, what are we talking about? Today, we're going to talk about 10 things that we've learned as entrepreneurs slash business owners and
00:01:59
Jacob Oak
There could be probably a bajillion things, but what? The first episode we did was at five things, 10 things we've learned as podcasters from doing the podcast. Yes. Yes. Yes. Sorry. 10 weeks ago. A long time. Holy smokes. 10 weeks from now, i probably rich millionaires. I think that's what we said at the beginning. And and we're going to take all of our followers on vacation somewhere. Right.
00:02:28
Jacob Oak
all the OG years. But yeah, so today 10 things we learned as business owners, entrepreneurs, there could be a bajillion, but today we're just going to do five each. And this would be a good episode for anyone who's considering opening their own business, or even if you have one, these are probably a lot of things that other people can relate to. It's a grind.
00:02:58
Jacob Oak
That's number one for you. No. That was one of the other bajillion. I was going to say I'm going to have to cross my first one out there. Grind. Shoot. Just cancelled. Do you want to go first with yours? Sure. We didn't actually check that any of ours aren't the same. No, that's why it's going to be fun because I feel like they probably will match up.

Finding Mentors and Crafting Identity

00:03:22
Jacob Oak
So number one, I wrote find people ahead of you, surround yourself with them, take what you like and leave what you don't do this with as many people as possible and create your own craft within whatever industry you're doing. So it's kind of the One thing that's helped me a lot is I, I mean, basically I just said, I have mentors that I saw what they were doing and I'm, and a few of them, I remember thinking, okay, you're making good money in this industry, which is an outlier for, I'm in the personal training run coaching industry, but these people were making well over a hundred K a year. And I remember thinking, well, if the average salary is like 35 for my industry and I want to make over a hundred,
00:04:11
Jacob Oak
How do I do that? That's, we should probably start by hanging out with people that are doing that and figure out what they're doing to be successful. Um, that was, you know, not everything's from a money standpoint, but then I also did that with, I had some trainers ahead of me too, that I liked, you know, they had a full schedule. They, I liked the way they were training their clients. So I just hung out with them.
00:04:38
Jacob Oak
And you usually get new friends out of it too. The only thing I will say is be careful because actually I won't say it, nevermind. You usually get new friends out of it too. So that's, that's number one, find people ahead of you that are doing what you want to do in like five, 10, 20 years and learn from them and model after them. And also remember that there's going to be things that they might be doing that you don't like. So don't, you know, do that. That kind of goes along with.
00:05:11
Jacob Oak
one of mine, but basically I was saying no one is going to run their business the exact way that you want to. So take what everyone says, get mentors, look at where other people are at. But as our guest Todd said, I think it was episode seven or eight around there, um, listen to all of your mentors, but take everything with a grain of of sand.
00:05:40
Jacob Oak
what he said and you know it's okay to get advice and like listen to podcasts and read books and gather all of that information from different sources that you trust but at the end of the day it's your business and even the two of us run our businesses very differently and when I look at other acupuncturists like yeah we have the same general idea but it's still very different And at the end of the day, people are coming to your business for you and not because you're a replica of somebody else.
00:06:16
Jacob Oak
And that also goes along with, you know, I feel like people give you a lot of feedback, good or bad of what you're doing. And if somebody is not doing what you want to be doing or where you want to be in the next 10 to 20 years,
00:06:34
Jacob Oak
Really take their impact and input of the grain of sand not saying completely cancel them and don't listen at all But and that goes for anything in life, you know if somebody's giving you relationship advice but They don't have the relationship that you want if they've learned from the past then that's one thing but just remember that every people are always gonna have an opinion and Just follow more so the people that you can see yourself being someday. Yeah. Aaron Rogers, I think on the Joe Rogan podcast, talked about how he never takes advice from people he wouldn't ask for advice from. Yeah. So if someone, and usually the people that just like want to give you advice or like coming at you, it's like GTFO.
00:07:29
Jacob Oak
Yeah, they most people do not know your exact situation. They don't know where you came from. like They don't know all of the details. So if people are you know putting you down, just remember that you are on your own journey. Right.

Hustle Mentality and Taking Breaks

00:07:46
Jacob Oak
Number three, you have to learn to love the process and be okay with working slash hustling constantly.
00:07:57
Jacob Oak
So this is gonna be a hot take against people who are like, oh, hustle mentality is toxic. But here's the thing. If you're gonna be an entrepreneur, you're entrepreneur and you need to have a hustle mentality, period. Don't do entrepreneurship otherwise. It's pretty blunt. And I think that's pretty self-explanatory. You're going after work 24-7, and that is not exaggerating. Probably more than that, you'll be working. Especially in the beginning.
00:08:23
Jacob Oak
If you want to be successful, if you want to be so successful, if it's like a side hustle thing, I guess, and you just want to do 10 hours a week of it. you know like and's Yeah. But if you actually want to get somewhere, you are going to have to put in the time because I was a solo entrepreneur, especially typically you do not start right off the bat with marketing HR.
00:08:47
Jacob Oak
People help with finances, like those are things that typically come later, it's at the beginning, it's all you. Right, but also don't just hustle for the sake of hustling. If if possible, right, that's very privileged to say it, but like try to hustle where it makes sense. For example, I see, you know, a lot of personal trainers that will have another job at a gas station. You're not gonna pick up clients there, likely.
00:09:16
Jacob Oak
It has nothing to do with personal training, right? Go get a job at like a shoe store or Dick's Sporting Goods or something related to it. so
00:09:27
Jacob Oak
Along the, what I was just saying about you doing all the work, um, as an entrepreneur, you're the one who's making all of the decisions. So no one is standing over you telling you what to do.
00:09:44
Jacob Oak
And even like a schedule, no one is giving you time off. And I feel like you and I are good together with that because when we first met talking, you were like, I'm going to take a month sabbatical every year. And I think it's hard because we don't get sick time. We don't get vacation time. It's more of, okay, we want to take this vacation. So we're going to block off our schedules for a week or two, but then.
00:10:13
Jacob Oak
I think the hard part is then we're not getting paid. And so then in my mind, it's like, it has to be very intentional time off. I need to actually be like, Kaylee, you deserve this time off. And yeah, just the fact that nobody is like setting that time aside for you can be pretty hard. I agree. But I know that can go for,
00:10:40
Jacob Oak
even office workers when you have unlimited time off, then I think there's studies where those people end up taking less time off than people who actually have a set amount of vacation time. So this kind of goes for everyone, but use your time off. And if you don't have built-in time off, something we could even, I don't know, it's just a thought, but like set setting aside like say, okay, let's give ourselves three weeks vacation time every year, which I guess that's kind of what we do with the sabbatical. But just having that in mind so that you don't get six months in and you haven't taken a day off, especially because we are working around the clock 24 seven, it's more than just a nine to five. It's a you wake up, you're answering emails, calls, you go to bed, you're still
00:11:32
Jacob Oak
try to be better at this too. But you come home typically and are still like finishing off things for the day, you're answering texts from clients. So it's more than full time. Yep.
00:11:49
Jacob Oak
Number five. Yeah.
00:11:57
Jacob Oak
This kind of goes with the hustle mentality a little bit, but especially when you're starting, I wrote, don't say no to anything. But like I said, in the last portion, like within reason that's related to, you know, your entrepreneurship business, whatever. So in the,
00:12:17
Jacob Oak
early years especially, you pretty much have to be a yes person. Say yes to pretty much every single opportunity. Even if you're not, if it's something like you're not making money directly off of it, but it's gonna help you learn how to make money from it or learn something that will help a client, whatever, you know.
00:12:36
Jacob Oak
Even if it's a speaking opportunity that's not paid, it's still public speaking skills right and getting that exposure. So it's pretty much learn to say, but don't say no to anything. And then as you get going, it's learn to say no to most things. That's kind of the point. It's like we're at now where it's maybe not exactly there, but I'm getting to a point where it's, I need to say no to more than I do.
00:13:05
Jacob Oak
So finding that balance is important, but especially at first don't say no to like anything. Go do tons of stuff.
00:13:16
Jacob Oak
Um, number six, it requires a tremendous amount of independence.

Self-Motivation and Professionalism

00:13:25
Jacob Oak
Yeah. And this kind of goes back to the one I was just saying about you making all the decisions, but no one is creating deadlines for you.
00:13:34
Jacob Oak
coming out of school, you have you know your papers do a certain day, your quizzes, you're gonna have to take the quiz a certain time, your test, your finals, and then you wrap up the at the end of the semester. Now, the business never closes. There's no like final trimester ever. It just keeps going. And what are you looking at?
00:13:57
Jacob Oak
And if you're not a super self-motivated person, I think you can get behind pretty quickly. And it's totally fine if you are someone that wants more of like a deadline schedule and if it helps to work for an employer or even if that's not you, even setting your own deadline schedule and saying, okay, I'm going to have you know, this blog post written by this date. I'm gonna have my QuickBooks sorted out by this date. And even when I was starting my business a year and a half ago, kind of the catalyst was honestly you when you were back DMing me on Instagram.
00:14:42
Jacob Oak
Asking when the business was starting and basically that you wanted to get in and that was kind of like my kick in the butt to be like, okay, Kaylee, like people are waiting for this and you got to do it. And you kind of helped me with the website with that too. Um, I'm more of a perfectionist. I wanted everything to be perfect while I, before I like put up my website or had my scheduling link up.
00:15:06
Jacob Oak
And at some point, you just have to go for it and do it. And if you don't have a Jacob, you need to be able you need to be able to find that motivation by yourself. And I think that's where like being an athlete ties into, because it can kind of be the same thing. like If you're not motivated to go out for a training run, nobody's forcing you to do these things. Nobody's forcing you to get up at and We got up at 5 a.m. to go to strength class. You have to be self-motivated, which can be kind of draining too, knowing when to put on a gas pedal and when to chill a little bit. Yeah, and self-motivated and able to go with the flow, kind of like with the website and business. The easy example is
00:16:00
Jacob Oak
I had someone ask me for a business card at one point when I worked at the running store. And I don't know if they're an employee or who I was going to see them again like the next week. And I was like, ah, shoot, I don't have any with me today.
00:16:14
Jacob Oak
I'll burn one next time I see you." And I didn't have any at all. So I went home that day, made business cards, and got them like expedit expedited, shipping or whatever, and brought it back. like Stuff like that. webs like Website pages. I'm not with website pages.
00:16:31
Jacob Oak
My gait analysis process when I was first starting it, you know, I remember the first gait analysis I did. I didn't have any videos made for the exercises. So I got done, drove, made videos for three hours, uploaded them to YouTube. So much work. And then, yeah. So five, six, seven, number seven. lucky number This one's important. Don't talk bad about anyone.
00:16:59
Jacob Oak
or burn bridges, it's a very small world. And in my industry, our industry, I've just seen so many people do that and it's just my blowing to me. So don't do that, like it's just not necessary. I will say, also feel I was gonna say this earlier, but I feel like i I've come across as two-faced at times though and I end up losing relationships.
00:17:25
Jacob Oak
And because I won't talk bad about people and situations, and then it ends up, I don't know, biting me in the ass later, like looking bad. If like I knew something about a person and never told the other person, you know what I mean? I don't know if that makes sense. It's not super relevant right now, but don't talk bad about anyone or burn bridges. That's important. Yeah. You kind of have to be professional at all times. Always. There's no, which is unfortunate, but there's not really any room for screwing up.
00:17:56
Jacob Oak
And yes, you will screw up. That's the fact of the matter. But do your hardest, do your best. Don't make enemies. To not make enemies, not burn bridges. And it's not like you need to be friends with everybody, but don't be enemies with people. Right.

Patience and Handling Feedback

00:18:18
Jacob Oak
My eighth one is being an entrepreneur we requires a huge amount of patience and sitting in the hard and the uncomfortable. It's super freaking uncomfortable. And I've talked about this on the podcast, I think it was Taylor's podcast before the TEC one, about how this relates to being a runner too. Running is uncomfortable, being a business owner is uncomfortable.
00:18:49
Jacob Oak
um And its gonna you're going to be uncomfortable for a long time too. So I think it's important to go into your business with the mindset that you're in this for the long haul. And that's not going to be a super smooth or easy ride, but that not even the end goal, but just the whole ride will be worth it. And that you're going to learn a ton about yourself along the way.
00:19:19
Jacob Oak
And I think that's the kind of the cool thing too is it's, it is kind of a journey about learning about yourself. I feel like there's so many things that I wouldn't have learned if I hadn't been doing this. Just so much patience with yourself and those around you, people around you need to have a lot of patience with you. And don't give up. Be stubborn. Keep going. Yeah. There's a,
00:19:47
Jacob Oak
I'm terrible with stats, but another stat, like like over 90% of small business owners will quit within the first couple of years. probably And you can totally see why because it's hard. But I think what I've heard is if you stick with it for at least five years, then things start to kind of happen and don't seem so hard is what I've been told.
00:20:16
Jacob Oak
And then think of where you're going to be after another five years and just the two of us. I mean, we've only been in this for a few years, a full time at this point and how far we've come every single year, every single month. Huge strides are taken. Yeah. And my first month in business was January of 2021. So in that month I made $50. Yeah.
00:20:46
Jacob Oak
So we're almost on four the four year mark for me. My last one, no one that is ahead of you is going to talk down to you or speak poorly of you. That's a very important one to remember. Anyone that is further than you in entrepreneurship,
00:21:07
Jacob Oak
is not concerned in terms of like talking poorly about usually anyone, but especially people below them. Not to be like below them like derogatory, but I think that's a yeah big thing. like My mentors and stuff, they don't they're not talking bad about me. The only people that talk bad about me are usually the people that are like behind me in terms of like business stats or whatever. You want to be where you are. Yeah, that's kind of what I've learned.
00:21:34
Jacob Oak
So keep that, keep your chin up. Remember that. Yeah. The more successful people want to see you succeed. yeah Exactly. So you're going to put it too. Yeah. And non-successful people like are afraid of success typically as well. And don't want to see a lot of times people succeed around them because it makes them feel bad about themselves. So remember that too. I've had numerous people like that.
00:22:08
Jacob Oak
having a business and the an entrepreneur exposes all of your insecurities. Yeah. What are your insecurities? Just kidding. I mean, just one, like I'm a huge, both of us are huge words of affirmation people and hard it's very hard in this business, you know, and hard as an acupuncturist I'll see people and then the goal for them is to get better and then I send them off into the world and they've learned the tools from you know the medicine and ideally then they're better and then they can come to see me if you know when things go wrong again. I would love to see people every week for eternity but also that's not realistic and I want people to be self-motivated and do their own thing
00:23:08
Jacob Oak
Um, but a lot of times you don't know like if they had a terrible treatment or if you actually fixed them. And thankfully I know a lot of my patients and stuff, but I can just be very hard on myself. Um, because I don't get that immediate feedback that I love, which was nice in school. Cause you find out your grade immediately or your score on a test or.
00:23:36
Jacob Oak
you know, just different things like that where you actually, I got a ton of feedback in school. And again, nobody's around like telling you like, good job. And mean we have each other for that in our families, I guess. But yeah, it just, you're putting everything out there.
00:24:02
Jacob Oak
And even doing this podcast like shows a lot of vulnerability, um, our part for sharing things and that can be hard too. Um, so yeah, again, you just learn a lot about yourself and things of that you need to work on.

Personal Highlights and Future Plans

00:24:24
Jacob Oak
Yeah. We get to do this. What's your, we get to do this moment this week. Well. This is a little in advance of when this, this already been done by the time this pod comes out, but I get to see Taylor Swift this weekend. More Taylor Swift, 10 more minutes. I did sadly just see, I don't know on what charts, but Beyonce is actually ahead of Taylor in some like music charts. I was like, and then followed by Rihanna. Beyonce and Rihanna Taylor? Beyonce, Taylor, Rihanna. I was like, wow.
00:25:02
Jacob Oak
The queen comes out on top. She is the queen. But Taylor is Taylor. I know. I haven't even gone there yet, but I'm very excited to be in Seattle and Vancouver and just feel extremely grateful that I can can do that. It's going to be fun for you. What's yours?
00:25:24
Jacob Oak
while I'm racing a marathon in like three days, and that's definitely my goal to do this moment. So it will be my, I'm just very excited to get out there. I'm very nervous, very happy. Hard part's done. Harder part's done. It's going to be hard on Sunday, but the training's done. Legs felt really good today, and we fly out tomorrow morning. We get to do this. It's time to go to work. Business trip. Heck yeah. Episode 20. Episode 20, y'all.
00:25:53
Jacob Oak
Come to our New Year's class. Come to our New Year's class. Elevate 2025. We'll keep putting in the show notes. yeah Thank you all for listening. 20 episodes down, 80 to go. Let's get it.
