00:03:57
RICK JAMES
it's two it was two It was like 2.2 inches. But we hauled, you always laugh, but we hauled, we had guys that count loads and we have we hauled like 530 loads and And with 22 trucks in nine hours.
00:04:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
I love it, dude. I'm telling you, if we could get away with hauling every two inches that we get here, like that would be freaking phenomenal.

RICK JAMES
Crush it. Yeah.
00:05:50
RICK JAMES
Yeah, definitely.
00:05:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's 157 episodes in. Still loving it. Still doing it. Guys are still listening. Numbers are still going up. We had a lot of listens the last two weeks. um Last week we did our just, you know, us bullshitting about the previous three years, answering listener questions, some questions from our boys and stuff. And the week before that was the lead up to Megastorm Fern.
00:06:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
That hit, I can't even say the East Coast, it hit three quarters of the country. mean, it was 2,000 miles long. So it hit everybody from, I think, Texas all the way up to Maine before it finally ah let us go.
00:06:25
RICK JAMES
Yeah, that was a big one.
00:06:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, ah yeah, we had some of my local guys. We had them on to talk about the lead up and what they were going to do to prepare for it, if anything was different, because at the time they were calling you know anywhere 12 to 16 inches for us.
00:06:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know But expect more, and we did get more. So we had, we told you we'd have those guys back to find out how they did. We couldn't do it last week because everybody was still digging out and hauling last week. So things have finally, i think caught up for everybody, at least somewhat. So we got the boys back and that's what we're going to do tonight. We're going to hear how mega storm Fern went for everybody.

Listener Engagement and Merchandise Updates
00:10:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
gang, we're back. So like we said, quick week in review. Last week, we did our three-year anniversary show. Me and Jay just kicked it around for what was supposed to be 45 minutes, but ended up, you know, our normal hour and a half.
00:11:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
We just can't get away from that hour and a half timeline, apparently. So we answered a lot of questions that the the boys were nice enough to send in for us about the first three years of the show.
00:11:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
we thanked a lot of people, thanked all the listeners out there. I did forget somebody I got to throw in. As I was listening to it you always forget while you're recording, but when I listen to it, I'm like, shit,
00:11:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
I didn't, and we didn't mention Brandon Riley. Like he helped us out big with the dustings in the beginning too. He came on, you know, a bunch of times there.
00:11:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, you know he helped us get some momentum too. So, you know, big thanks to Brandon as well as Mikey Sanalacito for, ah for getting us off and running there in those first couple months with the dustings episodes.
00:11:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then, ah you know, to our, our crew, we didn't really, didn't really name the inner circle there. So, you know, to those boys that are always available day, night, 24, seven, you know, for anything, you know, we,
00:11:52
RICK JAMES
Unless you need them.
00:11:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
unless unless you need them
00:11:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
no they're the best man you need you need anything from them you just uh throw out a text and out of the out of the group of them you generally get two or three instantaneously saying yep what do you need so thanks to those boys and again thanks to every listener out there that's i can't believe how many guys are out there just finding this in the last three weeks to a month how many how many dms have you gotten like in the last month because i know i've gotten a bunch
00:12:23

00:12:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
So...
00:12:34
RICK JAMES
Yeah, definitely.
00:12:35

RICK JAMES
Yeah, nobody wants a blaze orange, yellow sweatshirt. Fuck that.
00:13:45
RICK JAMES
yeah I'll probably be doing, maybe next week I'll give it like a review. I've had, we tried a couple loaders out, demo like Hyundai, and then we got a but new Bobcat loader demoing.
00:13:56
RICK JAMES
So some guys asked me if I would do a review on them.
00:13:57
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:14:38
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:14:38
RICK JAMES
That's a secret.
00:14:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, cool.
00:14:39

00:17:28
RICK JAMES
up, guys? yeah
00:17:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, so how did we, how did we do? Let's let's go around the room. well We'll start from South to North there tonight. We went North to South last time, I think.
00:17:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
So Rick, how'd you, ah how'd you guys make out what they call for? What'd you end up with?
00:17:46
Rick
we were in that 12 to 18 range and uh we got 16 17 somewhere somewhere right around there pretty much kind of
00:17:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
So they were right.
00:17:54
Rick
Yeah, they were right. The upper end of what what they were thinking.
00:17:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. Nice. Nice.
00:17:57
Rick
You know, some stuff was blowing around. Maybe we had a little more in some spots, a little less, but generally right around that 16, 17.
00:18:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:18:04
Rick
um Besides it being ah you know a really expensive couple of days for me, it was ah it was a great storm.
00:18:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh-huh.
00:18:11
Rick
The guys the guys absolutely killed it. um Our places looked fantastic the morning after.
00:18:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
They did.
00:18:19
Rick
We had blacktop by, i don't know, seven o'clock in the morning everywhere.
00:18:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:18:23
Rick
So I couldn't, you know, besides the cost, I couldn't have asked for it to go any better. We had a couple of little hiccups. The very first morning we had three machines gel up, but 15 minutes they were back up and running.
00:18:39
Rick
We can, we keep those electric heat guns in, in a lot of our trucks and we heated up the fuel water separators and they, they were back up and running. They all started. They just, we started pushing and they started bogging down a little bit.
00:18:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
yep Yeah, that's not bad.
00:18:51
Rick
So I don't know, maybe they just, we we put a ton of anti-gel in. I don't know. Maybe they didn't have quite enough in them. Some of those, maybe they had like a three quarters of a tank. And then when we topped them off, they just didn't have like a,
00:19:03
Rick
you know, it wasn't treated enough. I'm not sure, but we, we ran, I think 22, 23 loaders at storm and three of you know, we had three of them have an issue. ah I'll take it.
00:19:14
Rick
That was, that was our biggest issue was 15 minutes, you know, with a heat gun and, and then they were fine the whole rest of the storm the next morning. So I'll, uh, I'll take it.
00:19:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:19:23
Rick
you know I, know, awesome, awesome crew. Can't thank the guys enough. They really, you know, everybody stepped up and, uh, you know, we kind of showed everyone, you know, why, why they, why they have us there.
00:19:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh yeah that was definitely a men from the boys uh this is what you pay for storm mm-hmm
00:19:44
RICK JAMES
but How quick did that those inches fall Rick? Were they pretty quick or what?
00:19:48
Rick
It was, uh, we were getting hammered. We, it was, I don't know, it probably two inches an hour for a lot of it. I mean, I think the bulk of our accumulation, at least for us, um,
00:19:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah.
00:19:59
Rick
was done by midnight. And then it kind of, we, we, when I got home around midnight, I went and shoveled my walk so I could kind of see what we got. We we went, we stopped around like 1130 or so, and then came back in at four.
00:20:13
Rick
Because again, they said that the bulk of our accumulation was going to be done by midnight. And maybe we got another inch between midnight and 4am. It wasn't much kind spitting on and off.
00:20:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, so... All right, so that's where we were different then.
00:20:27
Rick
Yeah. We were in a little hole.
00:20:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because, yeah, because by us, they told us the same thing. Like, your main accumulation is over between 11 and midnight, and between midnight and, what, 10 a.m. was the end time, they were saying you're probably only gonna end up with another one to two.
00:20:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
It never slowed down for us. Like it snowed straight through it. it You had like maybe a 20 minute, half hour about around 1130 midnight where it slowed down. It looked like it was going to stop. And then as soon as, as soon as everybody went home, it started snowing again. I think we had another four inches or so four and a half inches by morning.
00:21:03
Rick
Yeah, I was checking the radar and I could see to the north.
00:21:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
And, uh,
00:21:06
Rick
You know, you guys had bands up there where we were kind of like in this dry slot.
00:21:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that was a nice place to be then. Good. I would have loved it if it was done by midnight.
00:21:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that was ah interesting. Well, good, man. Your lots looked awesome,
Long Hours and Snow Relocation Efforts
00:21:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
man. Good. Shout out to the boys that they did phenomenal.
00:21:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Didn't you make the news?
00:21:24
Rick
Yeah, one of the one of the sites, ah one of the news reporter and van and they kind of showed up when we were at the tail end. We were salting and they were they were recording some of the the piles, how big the piles were and everything.
00:21:39
Rick
so yeah, it was ah I don't know. i think it was a News 12 was there.
00:21:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:21:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, your shit looked, um it looked immaculate.
00:21:44
Rick
But like I said, all in all, it was great.
00:21:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
So a nice job.
00:21:47
Rick
No, thank you. it it Like I said, everyone did an awesome job. Can't thank my guys enough.
00:21:53
Rick
um Everyone was just lights out. They just did a great job.
00:21:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool.
00:21:58
Rick
You know, it's why we buy these machines, why we buy the, you know, why we buy these pusher blades. Just, you know, we're we're kind of built for...
00:22:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:22:06
Rick
you know, these accumulations and to have it go smoothly. you know, we haven't had these big storms and have everything go as good as it did. it really felt great. The guys were all proud of themselves. They were all bragging afterwards and, you know, talking about what places looked horrible and how good everything looked. So hats off to them.
00:22:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
There were a lot of places that looked horrible.
00:22:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
lot of places.
00:22:28
Rick
Days after days, multiple days.
00:22:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yes, exactly. Oh, 100%. Yeah, no, that's that's awesome. Good for them. I mean, but that that is something like like people were asking, like, how do you...
00:22:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah This isn't normal for you guys, right? Having, you know, 20 plus, you know. I'm like... it' it's not a every year thing but it's a once every three to five that we're getting a couple that are 20 plus um a foot is kind of normal we we're we're good for a foot usually at least once a year um not last year last year i think was the first year we looked at the climatology first year in the last eight that we did not have double digits so we got off easy but
00:23:10
Rick
Yeah, I think the biggest last year, maybe 8, 8, 9, something like that.
00:23:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I think we got nine.
00:23:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, nine was our biggest last year, but the but we had a lot more events. But yeah, a foot's not abnormal for us. Two feet is is not even that abnormal.
00:23:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
But I'll tell you, this one was tough if you were trying to do it with trucks because it was real tough to try and keep up with two inch, like you said, two in a two inch to three inch an hour snowfall rates.
00:23:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
if you're If you're a little spread out, you can only move that snow. It'll push it because it's light, but yeah you can only stack it so high and push it so far with trucks.
00:23:42
Rick
Run out of room real quick.
00:23:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
you do you need the iron but luke how'd you guys do we'll move slightly north uh from maya pack to cold spring how did you guys make out
00:23:52
Luke
Good, man. ah Super just grateful that we got through it. um Besides just long hours, equipment-wise, everything went well. Nothing really broke down. ah Just super long hours, but we had our commercial sites cleaned up by 7 a.m. m Monday morning, and then we were able to hit everything twice, which was really, really uh fortunate otherwise we would not have made it up some of those steep driveways you were talking about um in the end it took like out of our 60 ish driveways we couldn't get up four of them um just like tried everything could not get up them even having plowed them twice that second go around the snow kind of changed a little bit got a little bit heavier um just into the like monday morning uh
00:24:13
Rick
the other side the screen.
00:24:38
Luke
And we had to bring skid steer there and get up some of those steep driveways, which took a lot of time. But we got everybody basically 100% cleared residential driveways by Tuesday.
00:24:49
Luke
um And then yesterday was actually our last day working the storm, just relocation. ah we Had to go out to residential properties and relocate snow because just 100% capacity everywhere. Commercial, we so that was we did the end of the week. we We cleaned up our commercial lot relocation. We put in about eight hours there, um which is all extra money. So... Yeah, but 10 days total, it took us to just kind of milk this storm and make as much money as we can, and we'll get a one-day break here and go again tomorrow. But, yeah, fortunate. just It was a lot of fun, just long hours, little sleep, but, yeah.
00:25:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
And this is a snow guy's winter because the temperatures were below freezing the whole 10 days.
00:25:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
So there was no melt off.
00:25:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it wasn't even like, you know, customers that in the past have said, ah, the piles will be gone in a week. Don't even worry about moving it. They were like, no, get this shit the hell out of here. Like what?
00:25:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Just name your price. Just get it out of here.
00:25:46
Luke
Yeah, I'd sent out emails to all my customers and didn't make it mandatory, but it was worded that it was like very close to mandatory.
00:25:55
Luke
Hey, we have to come and move these piles. Otherwise we're going to damage our plows. We're not going to be able to push snow anywhere. There will be no parking spaces left. And I would say we got a little bit over 50%, which is more than I thought I'd get for relocating snow on residential driveways.
00:26:09
Luke
I never thought I would have to do that before.
00:26:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:26:11
Luke
so yeah, that was fun,
Weather Predictions and Challenges
00:26:13
Luke
man. We were just trailing in the skit around dropping it off, driving a skid. You know, I have couple houses close to each other we just boom, boom, boom, boom the last few days.
00:26:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice. How much did you get in Cold Spring?
00:26:24
Luke
ah Average, I'd say around 18 inches.
00:26:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:26:28
Luke
Some places is like up on that mountain, upwards of like 22 to 24, which I think was the range they put us in was anywhere from like 16 to 24, I want to say.
00:26:39
Luke
ah So I will give the weathermen some credit. there They were pretty accurate with it.
00:26:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they definitely knew they definitely knew approximately what was coming. The only thing they didn't know was where the heavy bands were going to actually set up.
00:26:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
so And that was what I think a lot of guys found. i think I think Matt found that too, that the difference of like five miles was a difference of four to five inches.
00:27:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
So a lot of a lot of that that happened. Yeah. Well, good, man. I'm glad you made it through. And I still can't believe some of these videos of these driveways you you send that you're doing. i'm like, man, not in my not on my best day would I attempt this. Yeah.
00:27:19
Luke
Yeah, it was it was some of them were a little crazy for this one. I haven't been scared in a couple of years doing these, but there was you know there was nowhere to slide and nowhere to go because the banks were so huge.
00:27:29
Luke
but i mean My truck's a beast, man, but just some of them were just a little too steep to get up, even with only 8 to 10 inches on them.
00:27:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
what What's your Instagram for everybody out there? Because some guys that might not know like what we're talking about as far as how crazy and gnarly some of these mountain driveways are that that they set back and they they yeah they're going back and forth and back and forth all the way up the mountain.
00:27:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
like what's What's your Instagram so they can check out those videos?
00:27:57
Luke
Yeah, just search ah LJ Loan and property maintenance and I'll pop up.
00:28:00
Luke
um A lot of videos, the camera doesn't do ah a lot of the driveways justice, but you'll get an idea. I got the meta glasses to film the POV and um I think guys are really enjoying that that that angle and seeing what I deal with.
00:28:14
Luke
I got stuck a few times this storm, but by the grace of God, I got out. I think i was stuck for the the longest time, it was like an hour just Banks were too big, man. I was in a culvert ditch.
00:28:25
Luke
I drove over a rock wall, was kind of teetering on it.
00:28:28
Luke
Just couldn't see anything, um even with the snow stakes recovered from the banks from the first plow.
00:28:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah.
00:28:33
Luke
Yeah, it was it was tough out there, but we made it through.
00:28:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was, yeah, that the visibility was not good at all during that. Even in the daytime, it was just a total whiteout. and
00:28:46
Luke
Yeah, and I'm driving a lot of you like i'm I'm not like parked at a commercial site, keeping the commercial site open. I'm driving house to house during ah two to three inch per hour rates. So visibility was not great on the main roads.
00:28:58
Luke
ah They did a good job keeping up on the main roads, but still.
00:29:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
They did a great job. The state, I wanted to say that give New York state DOT, they did a phenomenal job for how much snow, at least in our area, for how much snow we were getting route nine was never more than two inches, three inches.
00:29:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
They were running wolf packs North and South on nine, keeping that open.
Road Clearing and Municipal Challenges
00:29:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh, 52 is the, is the other main road through, you know, that runs East West. that was open. Um, um, there were a couple county plowed roads that had a full 16 inches on them. Like they didn't touch them until the storm was over. It was really, that was dicey getting to the one, the one commercial site we do, but, but the state, the state nailed this one. I don't know how the interstate was, but you know, the, the D O T guys out of that fish kill cold spring garage, they, they kicked ass.
00:29:50
Luke
Yeah. I know a few of the guys and they did a really good job. They worked crazy hours as well. And they, they kept up with it.
00:29:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:29:55
Luke
The village of cold spring did a great job on the roads. Their relocation, ah not great. They totally did not have a plan for relocation. They had a sub out, um trucks and everything and it was kind of a disaster so oh yeah they so they spendt they spent millions on subcontracting trucks for sure yep
00:30:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah i got a call for uh machines from uh from cold spring i'm like we're still doing our own thing dude like
00:30:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
i believe it oh i believe it absolutely um but it's got to be done right i mean it this you can't leave it here it wasn't going anywhere for weeks so cool all right matt how'd you guys make out in these fish kill actually you're everywhere so
00:30:30
Matt
ah yeah a waing mostly Wappingers, Fishkill, Poughkeepsie. But we great. I mean, the guys killed it. I mean, we brought in an extra skid loader this storm that helped out a lot to stack those piles even higher during the storm. And then we used two skid loaders after the storm to relocate and stack them up higher. And I mean,
00:30:58
Matt
One of the snowblowers broke down, but all the trucks, the extra preparation helped out really well. So very happy with that. But the guys did great. Everything held up. But maybe next year, maybe reinvest in some more ah heavier equipment. We'll see what happens.
00:31:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool and now what were you seeing because you cover all those towns uh what what were you seeing in poughkeepsie versus east fishkill versus fishkill like where was the most snow yeah
00:31:18
RICK JAMES
much should he get?
00:31:28
Matt
Uh, it was all about the same. I'd say 24 inches. um ah it's all about the same. When you're pushing that much snow, it all looks about the same, you know?
00:31:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah true true That's why I keep saying yeah you plow long enough, you know the difference between a 12-inch pile and a 24-inch pile, and then above 24 inches.
00:31:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, the guys know what they're pushing. It's simple math. If you pushed four inches if you push four inches six times, do the fucking math.
00:31:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's what i was telling the weather guys. Like, come on.
00:32:00
Matt
Well, the weather guys gave us a 14 and a half ah inches that fell. That's what they told us. And i more or less laughed at them and I texted you and I was like, oh, you believe this this is a joke.
00:32:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:32:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep, and that's everybody was starting to go out and sticking the stick the snow with their yardstick so they could show them, like, this is how off you guys are.
00:32:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, you're you're missing about 10 inches. But in their defense, they did not see the bands. that They can't tell where they're going to set up and what they're going to dump. And I think that was the i think that was a disconnect. they They just didn't see the bands like Rick said, it stopped there at 11 o'clock pretty much.
00:32:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
and they only got another inch till morning it didn't stop in our area
00:32:46
Matt
Now, it it snowed until 6 a.m. I, yeah.
00:32:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
yes five about 5 30 was when it lightened up because the guys had just come back in at five and we had another four and a half to push off but then by that time you've already pushed that much for another four and a half is no big deal it's one more push and we're done
00:33:04
Luke
I think that's how isolated it was though, because in cold spring, it did stop for like, I had finished my round ones and I was planning to go home and get a couple hours of sleep um because it was still snowing real heavy.
00:33:16
Luke
But then all of a sudden it kind of stopped for like an hour or two around maybe, I forget what time was, maybe like 11, 12 o'clock. And I was like, oh, I guess I'm going to go do final pushes. And then it started up a little bit again, but I think from like 12 to 6 a.m.
00:33:28
Luke
in cold spring, we only got another inch or two.
00:33:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it it did the pump fake on us. Like literally 1130, right on the dot, when they said it was going to slow down to nothing, it did for about 25 minutes.
00:33:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then you no sooner stop, you go into the convenience store to get ah you know get another diet Pepsi, whatever you need. You come out, and it's snowing like crazy again.
00:33:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
and you're like, ah, it's just probably like a little remnant or something. Nope, it just kept up. And I was like, I can't believe that this is not slowing down and it didn't slow down until about 5 30 5 30 5 45 somewhere in there but it was good cool all right we'll go north here about 40 minutes mike how'd you guys make out in kingston bud
00:34:15
mfitz1stdue_
We survived.
00:34:18
mfitz1stdue_
we yeah We made it. ah The beginning started out pretty well. First couple hours were going. um Lost my loader after about two hours at my largest site and tried doing some quick diagnostics on it and
00:34:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
plan
00:34:36
mfitz1stdue_
No cigar. So, uh, that was after I'd already lost the plow on my main truck down in that area. So I was, uh, it was, we were off to a good start and then it slowly started to decline.
00:34:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
plan b
00:34:48
mfitz1stdue_
um kind of called an audible right in the beginning of the storm there and and started doing, ah moving people around, ah taking equipment from place to place and just doing what we could. um Shortly after that, we started to get a handle on it, got the other plow back up and going, and we actually did end up doing 90% of it with trucks.
00:35:09
mfitz1stdue_
And believe it or not, with the the Cupid shuffle we had going around the Ulster County area over here, we got it done. Yeah.
00:35:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:35:16
mfitz1stdue_
People just bounce from place to place. I had some some new guys that I brought in this storm that have experience. um They did a great job. I kept getting the call like, hey, man, I think I did a good job here.
00:35:27
mfitz1stdue_
Just come check it out when you get a chance. And I'm like, I'll get right on that. But, i' you know.
00:35:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's good enough. but
00:35:32
mfitz1stdue_
Listen, as long as it looks good, work it's good in my eyes. So ah ultimately, they all did good, though. The guys, I mean, I can't speak highly enough. um The loader did go down for the rest of the storm.
00:35:43
mfitz1stdue_
Wasn't able to get that back up and going, but i had the skid, had the tractor going, and all the trucks they pushed along and and the guys shoveling. ah We all pulled it off, and, I mean, we were spent. That was a big storm. I mean, hands down, we ended up with, like I said, anywhere from – 22 to almost 30 in the the northern part of the area. um I can't thank the guys enough.
00:36:05
mfitz1stdue_
They really they all came together. They're the only reason I got through that because I was I was hurt in the next morning because we took a couple of breaks. um We kind of got that gap to would say right around like 11 p.m.
00:36:19
mfitz1stdue_
It started to slow down. I told the guys ah we're going to come back out about one thirty two o'clock is when it looked like it was going to be done. it did ah It did pretty much end right there around 1130 midnight for us. So when we came back out, it was it was game on, um hitting every site, cleaning them up as best as possible, moving into Monday.
00:36:36
mfitz1stdue_
And we worked straight through all the way up till, want to say 9 a.m. m on Monday. And ah about 9 a.m. on Monday, we all reconvened on one site. And as they're pulling up,
00:36:49
mfitz1stdue_
I just saw the the pure death in their eyes as they were looking at me like, please help me. um So I left, I kind of like broke it off in sections.
00:36:58
mfitz1stdue_
I let a couple of guys go and told them to go home. And we came back out just afternoon and on a Monday and hammered it out and had everything pretty much done. Um, And like I said, it it was a big storm. We pulled it off. We we did you know all used trucks and then got the loader running a few days later to start doing some other stuff. But ah we made out. you know It was a good storm. was learning A lot of learning happened. um It was nice to see those those properties around us that were either untouched or they were attempted to be touched and left left to the wolves after that because –
00:37:35
mfitz1stdue_
It didn't didn't look good in too many areas up here. I think there was a lot of weekend warriors that, you know, really take over a lot of these smaller commercial and even into the the larger commercial, we have a lot of weekend warriors. And ah I think they learned their lesson in that storm. That was a big one for them. But other than that, listen, we did it and the guys did good. So I can't ask for a better outcome.
00:37:59
RICK JAMES
What happened to your loader?
00:37:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Awesome.
00:37:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:38:00
mfitz1stdue_
yeah So, uh, The start of it it, it was pushing fine and I started noticing that it was bogging down. started thinking maybe I was getting some gelling happening or maybe some air in the fuel lines and ah put some heat on it, checked everything out, checked both filters. It has two separate ah fuel filters on it, and one being like a primary you know steel housing filter like a typical one and then the other being a cartridge-type filter and a plastic filter.
00:38:30
mfitz1stdue_
Checked it all, heated it all up, put new filters on it, no cigar. So it it would start every time and it would run, and it was just giving that those symptoms of like being gelled or not getting enough fuel. so Ultimately, you know days later when we were able to get to it and take a look at it, um the only solution we had was actually bypassing the complete plastic housing cartridge filter, ah running it off the single fuel filter alone. And it actually was the only thing that would get it running and running good. it actually seems like it's running better than it ever has. um But we don't know if there's just a hairline crack in that that plastic housing or if there was something you know we were missing or just couldn't find or maybe a bad cartridge-type filter.
00:39:10
mfitz1stdue_
all together I mean, even if we changed it, we couldn't get it to to to work properly. So we bypassed it altogether, and we're running it straight through the one filter, and it hasn't had any issues since. and It's been been running perfect.
00:39:20
mfitz1stdue_
So, you know, I guess we'll see see what's to come.
00:39:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:39:25
mfitz1stdue_
But so far, so good after that. I mean, it's it's pushing better than ever now, so...
00:39:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's cool all right yup
00:39:33
RICK JAMES
Is that the wolf? okay
00:39:35
mfitz1stdue_
It was. It was. So it pushed great for about two hours. Like I said, I left it to go back and get the plow that went down on me, came back to that site and started to push again.
00:39:45
mfitz1stdue_
And it was just giving me those issues. And that ended up being a fix.
00:39:49
RICK JAMES
Well, you figured it out at least.
00:39:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah, they had to figure out.
00:39:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
His dad's on it.
00:39:56
mfitz1stdue_
Yeah, I can't ask for someone better. I'll tell you why.
00:39:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nope.
Storm Impact and Collaborations
00:39:59
mfitz1stdue_
once Once we had some downtime, i mean, once he gets his hooks in it, it's it's a done deal. It's fixed. But I was stressing there for a little bit. And then I'll tell you, I'll be honest with you. Monday morning came around.
00:40:09
mfitz1stdue_
They were calling for that that other storm coming up to two feet or more. The following weekend, I was hurting.
00:40:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:40:15
mfitz1stdue_
I was looking at my guys. They were looking at me. I was having full-on panic attack. I was like, God, I hope not, man.
00:40:19
Matt
There could be a nice one straight.
00:40:20
mfitz1stdue_
Please miss us.
00:40:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
I told my wife, I said, ah they're calling for possibly another Nor'easter dumping the same amount of snow on us next weekend. I'm like, if that happens, I'm literally cashing out.
00:40:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah like Like, this is it.
00:40:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
This is retirement. This is your sign. Like, okay, here's your big money drop and just retire. Call it a day.
00:40:43
mfitz1stdue_
the The guys loved it. the The guys, every, every single one that pulled up next to me, did hear about that storm next week coming?
00:40:49
mfitz1stdue_
i'm like, please stop talking to me and come back in a few hours.
00:40:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah i said ah exactly yeah i'm i'm always the guy that's doing that to people like oh yeah we got snow covered and they're like i'm everybody mentioned that i'm like shut the fuck up like dude you're talking it into existence just let the thing go out to sea please oh
00:41:07
Rick
All week i was telling the guys, like, you cannot talk about it. Do not jinx it. When it started going out to sea a little bit, you're like, oh, looks like it's going to miss us.
00:41:14
Rick
I was like, shut your mouth.
00:41:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
yes shut up
00:41:17
Rick
Everyone quiet. Don't ask me about it. Don't say a word. I'm quietly looking to see what it's doing, but do not jinx it. I've done this long enough.
00:41:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
i I agree.
00:41:27
Luke
When was that originally supposed to hit?
00:41:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
i agree.
00:41:28
Luke
I forget. There's been so much snow.
00:41:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
same Same timeline, like Saturday, Sunday of last weekend, it was supposed to hit.
00:41:35
Luke
Right, that was last year.
00:41:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Exactly one week after the first one, it was like,
00:41:37
Luke
Oh, yeah. Thank God that missed us, man.
00:41:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, like, I thought they were joking when I saw the text putting it on the radar. I thought ah it was like, wait a minute, you guys missed, like, you're a week behind. Like, this was a week-old text.
00:41:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
And they're like, no.
00:41:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nick was like, no, it, like, looks the exact same. If this hits the way it can, it'll be the exact repeat of what you just had. I'm like, dude, kiss my ass, bro.
00:42:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Get that thing the hell out of here.
00:42:04
Rick
I can't imagine if we did get it because we're we're still not done moving snow.
00:42:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
thought
00:42:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
neither can I.
00:42:09
Rick
We've still got another, i don't know, two more days.
00:42:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nope. Mm-hmm.
00:42:12
Rick
And I mean, we we we literally, we parked the trucks on Monday and Tuesday morning at 4.30 in the morning, we started moving snow.
00:42:20
Rick
And we went day and night, 24-hour shifts for the first like three days.
00:42:24
Rick
And then we went back to one shift every single day until today. I mean, we're we're well over... 15,000 yards of snow that we've moved so far.
00:42:36
Rick
And I can't even think that if we would gotten would have gotten another 20 inches last weekend where it just, and with, it
00:42:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
It honestly would have been dangerous for the area to have that much snow twice in one week with nothing melting.
00:42:48
Rick
and, And we've had problems all week with roof problems and ice dams and like the guys, they have not had a break since, I don't need i don't even know what day it is.
00:42:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm.
00:42:59
Rick
Every single day, the guys are working almost 12 hour days every day, just putting out fires.
00:43:06
Rick
It's just every, yeah.
00:43:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
And you do all that shit, right, Rick?
00:43:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
You do all that ice damming and maintenance stuff.
00:43:10
Rick
Yup. And all the shops and we've just had, you know, we were out cleaning roof drains.
00:43:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Whew.
00:43:14
Rick
We were, you know, shoveling paths on the roof so the roofs can drain um but with these cold temperatures we'd get them thawed out during the day and then overnight they'd be solid frozen the salt really wasn't working that great um just all the drains were ice dammed and then they started leaking in and then a lot of the roofs are all you know epdm and then we had seams on the roof start peeling and people getting roof leaks and it just
00:43:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. yep
00:43:40
Rick
It has been nonstop. like today tomorrow you know Today is the first day where we almost had like a normal day, where we didn't have like a huge emergency. you know Send guys there.
00:43:51
Rick
um And then I think we're we're not going to move snow tomorrow. We're going to prep up tomorrow and just get a day to get ah The machines are all over the place there. I don't even know where half the machines are right now. Tomorrow, we need a day to just get everything back, get the pushers back on, make sure everything is greased, fueled, and ready to go for the weekend.
00:44:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:44:08
Rick
ah it just It's been crazy.
00:44:10
Luke
Rick, i don't know if you remember from our pre-storm episode, but everything you just described that you had to do for the roofs as you talked about it, and we're we're talking about possibly having to do that. So you were spot on with that because, yeah. Yeah.
00:44:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah. it's that The temperatures are not helping. I mean, you have nothing but ice damage. Like, the one complex we do, it's almost every unit that it's gotten so bad now it's behind the siding.
00:44:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's, you know, people, it's it's going through ceilings and stuff. And there's there's nothing you can really do. i mean, it's...
00:44:42
Luke
Dude, I tried to get it off of my house today, about eight inches of ice. I couldn't do anything. Literally, i can't do I had an ax up there. like ah like I tried every tool that I had. I could not get it off ice.
00:44:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Don't miss.
00:44:53
mfitz1stdue_
Like an episode of backdrafts.
00:44:55
Luke
My roof's brand new, so I'm like trying not to hit my brand new roof, you know?
00:44:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:44:59
Rick
One of the first one of the first days afterwards when we had a lot of ice dams, we brought like our hot water pressure washer out and a water tank.
00:45:06
Rick
We put, you know, ah antifreeze in it, you know, the the non-toxic antifreeze in it. And ah we could not get the thing. If we had to stop for five minutes, the pressure washer would freeze up.
00:45:18
Rick
It was so cold as well. You know, it was know six, seven degrees.
00:45:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:45:22
Rick
We could not. we We just we pull the hoses out to try to get it set up. the hoses would freeze. you you know you You bring the hoses in to try to ah thaw them, and then the pressure washer's frozen.
00:45:32
Rick
It was just it this cold. I mean, this this cold is not normal for us for this long.
00:45:38
Luke
I think it was record lows for our area, like ever.
00:45:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
now No, no.
00:45:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
and And not the duration either. Like, we're not used to a month straight of lockdown, you know, 10 degrees, 15 degrees.
00:45:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's not That's not normal for our area.
00:45:50
mfitz1stdue_
Saturday and Sunday, they're calling for up to negative 30.
00:45:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. And then, what, next week?
00:45:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
End next week, it looks like 40s and low 50s?
00:45:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:45:59
mfitz1stdue_
I had 40s on my, I don't know if it was true or not.
00:46:01
mfitz1stdue_
The truck was saying 40s today, and I was loving it. I was about to pull out the banana hammock and start shoveling snow because I was so happy. I mean, it was it was a true dream today, I can't lie. But the ice has been relentless up here as well.
00:46:13
mfitz1stdue_
I mean, everywhere.
00:46:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it definitely has.
00:46:15
Rick
Well, they're talking about us, another storm maybe like around Valentine's Day, and then the temperature's going up.
00:46:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:46:21
Rick
But they have no idea.
00:46:22
Luke
That's what it looks like.
00:46:22
Rick
and i've heard I've seen every scenario for the you know next weekend.
00:46:27
Rick
you know I've seen anywhere from an inch to two feet to rain. we'll see what that brings.
00:46:32
Luke
Yeah. Well, right now they have, they have Thursday through Sunday with about one to three inches every day, but then possibly some rain mixed in there. So who knows?
00:46:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm. Hmm.
00:46:44
Rick
And it's so easy to get right now. So, you know, it's fine.
00:46:44
RICK JAMES
How about you, Steve?
00:46:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, right?
00:46:47
mfitz1stdue_
That's right.
00:46:48
mfitz1stdue_
I was just going to say, the salt is unbelievable right now.
Salt Shortages and Logistical Issues
00:46:53
Rick
Our, our local town, uh, I got a buddy that works for town of Carmel highway.
00:46:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
It is.
00:46:57
Rick
And he told me that, that they got cut off yesterday afternoon for at least two weeks. They told them they can't get the barges up to Hudson.
00:47:05
mfitz1stdue_
Yeah, they're all frozen. they're Any that they are, they're filling trucks right off the barges up at the shed, up ah near Albany there, Carver.
00:47:13
mfitz1stdue_
it's It's crazy.
00:47:14
mfitz1stdue_
Even any... Yep. Completely empty. Crazy.
00:47:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
And Carver's building is empty, completely empty.
00:47:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
And it's a massive building, a massive, massive building.
00:47:21
Rick
but no But everyone told us you know six weeks ago they had plenty of salt.
00:47:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah. Don't worry about it.
00:47:27
Rick
Don't worry about it.
00:47:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nobody's getting cut off. ah
00:47:30
Rick
And I hear it's bad everywhere. Connecticut, New Jersey, nobody's got salt.
00:47:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
It is.
00:47:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, nobody's got it. It's it's pretty bad.
00:47:36
mfitz1stdue_
Bring in the beet juice.
00:47:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's pretty bad.
00:47:39
RICK JAMES
No. That's gross.
00:47:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
I just paid two and a half times just to get a load just to make myself comfortable that I'm going to have it.
00:47:42
RICK JAMES
That stuff is terrible.
00:47:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I...
00:47:47
mfitz1stdue_
what did you What did you pay, Steve?
00:47:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, God. ah Double, more than double my normal truck load rate. More than double. I think if I'm paying $3,300 for a Triax to come in with the Magic, this one was $60-something.
00:48:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. And I didn't even it was like an it wasn't like an impulse buy. It was kind of like a avoid panic buy. Like, I probably still have enough in my bin to make it through February without it. But I'm just like, I can't take that chance. Like we get one fucking ice storm.
00:48:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. You know, we've been spoiled that it's all been snow. If we got that one that we're and we're usually always good for that one fucking pain in the ass, 14 hours of fucking ice.
00:48:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
And boom, there you go. You've just used six times more salt than you normally use on a regular snowstorm. And there goes your reserve. So I said, oh, you know what? Just bring it in. Whatever it is, what it is at this point.
00:48:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you can get it, bring it in.
00:48:47
RICK JAMES
Steve-O, how did you fare...
00:48:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:48:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
My boys did great. um We had one breakage. They were absolutely phenomenal. they we so We dropped blades, I think, at 830. thirty 8 30 in the morning i think first time and they went until i called them off again because of the timeline we were given i told them i said listen i don't give a shit if it snows all the way through the morning but they're saying it's going to end 11 12 so 11 o'clock you make a pass you know you you clean everything up one more time and then we're done at 12 and then i want everybody to go you know
00:49:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
get get sleep come back in at five and nobody's going out tomorrow you know nobody's going out monday morning come back in at five and hopefully there's only an inch and a half that we gotta scrape off again but worst case scenario you know maybe four to five and we'll be good and it was worst case scenario there was you know four to five but
00:49:44
Luke
And there was people out on Monday.
00:49:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
There was, but because of companies like us and the guys that were doing it, where we had everybody. I want to say that though the one complex would the one complex that moves their cars on their own They were because we had black pavement on all their roads and their walkways were shoveled and there we had made three runs on the driveways.
00:50:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
We put the second machine with a second muskox up there and the two guys were going gangbusters on the driveways all night. So they could get out of their house by as early as 730.
00:50:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
So as soon as they woke up, it was basically black pavement on the main roads, and the guys were you know starting final cleanups on all the driveways and stuff. by I think we left that that complex by 10 o'clock, 10.30. I think we were out of there with final touch-ups done.
00:50:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
um And then the other complex I want to say was not much later, maybe 11. But we have to wait for them. So that's a we get everything cleared, and then they call us when they have all their vehicles moved.
00:50:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then we go in there and we can do the final clearance and final salt of all the parking spots.
00:50:55
Luke
where they putting their vehicles they're in that time Where are they putting their vehicles?
00:50:56
RICK JAMES
What'd you get?
00:50:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
What's that? So we plow, we keep everything curb to bumper. Basically it's a giant horseshoe. We pull it away from all the bumpers, all storm, and we pull it away from the curb, obviously, keep the curb clean, and we we bulk it into pile ah big piles, one in each section, and then they move all the cars out of the parking spots, and they move them all on the inside of the horseshoe, on the curb, and they go too deep too deep on the curb.
00:51:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
So they have a dude. They have an amazing snow operations plan.
00:51:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like literally as soon as we give the the guy the the thumbs up that, hey, all the walks are done and dusted. the The parking lot is all done and dusted. You can move cars. As soon as we give them the thumbs up, they put their robocall out and it's like you kicked a beehive.
00:51:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
People start running out of the buildings because they know they only got 20, 25 minutes before the snow ops guy that runs the whole complex is going to be all over them to get their car moved. So they were, they they're great. That complex is very easy to do because he he runs a tight ship over there.
00:52:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
so And that's why always if you're doing an HOA, the most important question to ask is, do they have a good snow operations plan for moving vehicles, and is it enforceable?
00:52:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Are the people there scared of what happens if they just decide they don't want to move their car that day? And in that place, yes, they're definitely scared.
00:52:24
RICK JAMES
you go what 20 inches?
00:52:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got more than 20. we were so I think they certified it finally after Hammond and Hawn at 23. um we were in that zone where parts of fish kill had well over two feet.
00:52:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Um, but like, like me and Matt said, like Luke and and Rick, uh, and even Mike, you guys seem to get lucky that the snow kind of let up at 11 o'clock midnight, whenever they said it was going to, it didn't really let up for us. It had faked us for about 25, 30 minutes and then it it started snowing again, right to, to 5 30 AM. So that would account for the extra couple inches that we got over, uh,
00:53:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know the other areas but now the guys did phenomenal yeah they do uh you know yeah everybody loves a couple a couple extra inches right oh
00:53:09
RICK JAMES
How'd your tools work?
00:53:09
mfitz1stdue_
An extra couple inches matter.
00:53:18
RICK JAMES
How were your tools? Any new any new tools?
00:53:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
let's see uh we only had one breakage um we blew a hydraulic line on one of the 280s in the morning i think was either right before they knocked off till 5 a.m., but the main body of work was done, and we didn't really need that machine anymore anyway.
00:53:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
um So that that wasn't a huge deal. That was our only breakage. We had one one issue with one of the loaders where the auxiliary hydros started acting up. its something We have air in the in the line. We have air in the system somehow, so we had to bleed that out and...
00:53:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
and Fixed that after the storm Don't know how the air got in the system But you know there's bubbles in the sight glass So but we troubleshot That and hopefully we have A fix for that um Trying to think the Razorback was freaking phenomenal again That thing bulked some serious Snow out that That that actually kept us um It kept us ahead of the Game because
00:54:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
when you know When I got to one site and I'm trying now to bulk out seven, eight inches on a closed complex that we knew, we're not going to hit this every three or four.
00:54:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're going hit this every seven to eight, you know three times, and we'll bulk it out. um Nobody's coming here Monday. Nobody's even coming here Tuesday. They're already closing on Tuesday. um That Razorback did some serious bulking.
00:54:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then it was impressive to see once the other truck showed up and you saw a nine foot six V trying to bulk versus a Razorback.
00:55:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's not even close. Like it's the Razorback is probably it's definitely double, but it might be even a little more than double because you know how those V's goes when you when you put them in scoop that, you know, a nine foot six becomes four foot five really quick.
00:55:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
So yeah.
00:55:18
Luke
You know what? It was so heavy that even like, just because of the amount of snow that, cause they don't have hydraulic down pressure. Um, so my, i have a nine six V and when I i was scooping large amounts of snow, my plow was actually raising up over the piles cause it was so much.
00:55:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
riding up yep i did have to i will say that i did have to use the down pressure because like you said when you got to the end of the push and you're bulking that much it doesn't matter if it's light and fluffy or not that plow wants to come up uh and even a plow as heavy as the razorback it wanted to come up so the down pressure was definitely key um but yeah that that thing was amazing i'm trying to think anything else any other problems or anything
00:55:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
The Phantom was great. Yeah, the Phantom was great. um Mark really likes that.
00:56:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
He was running that.
00:56:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
He was running that the whole storm. He liked that. it ah that thing That thing bulks some serious product. It it loses...
00:56:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
It loses less. he He's noticed it loses less than its counterpart did than the plow we had last year and the year before that. It loses a lot less off this off the wings.
00:56:27
RICK JAMES
What do you mean?
00:56:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah seems to It seems to to hold a lot better than the other one did. ah But yeah, he was happy with that. I'm trying to think what else we had.
00:56:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
We had a miscommunication that was a little like pucker. um Everything on the list was double check. You know, OK, sidewalk crew visited. Check. Final check. OK, it's been cleared. Yep. Check. Final check. All right, cool. Everything's good.
00:56:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Knock. We can knock off, you know, not worry about it. Tuesday morning comes. I get a call from one of the offices. The office manager says, is everything okay? I'm like, yeah, why?
00:57:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
And she's like, there's snow in the parking lot. I'm like, the hell is she goes, yeah, no, there's, there's snow in the parking lot. I'm like, send me a picture sends me a picture i'm like what the shit are you kidding me i said i'll be there in 10 minutes i went out there i'm trying to figure out like i'm like yep call up uh another guy hey grab the salt truck get the hell out here they open in 45 minutes we gotta have this cleaned up i don't know what happened
00:57:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Apparently after 36 hours, the sidewalk guys had done one visit during, and then they, the ninjas came back, but in, it had already been checked as finaled in the lot.
00:57:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
So if it's checked as final, they know they can't blow or shovel the snow out into the parking lot. They have to, they have to remove it on, you know, onto the bank or whatever.
00:58:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
36 hours is 36 hours the guys didn't have much rest so the the sidewalk ninjas they blew it all out into the parking lot and they cleared three feet from the curb four feet from the curb like they're supposed to and it was the i got there and as soon as i saw it i could tell what happened i'm like oh They did exactly what they were supposed to do. The only thing they didn't do was ensure that the truck was coming back to do final, but the truck already done final. So it was a little bit of a like, holy shit, but we managed to get it all cleaned up before, before they got there and opened up. So that was the, ah that was the only thing, but yeah, I mean, that had been plowed six times during that storm. So I'm like, all right, well, you know, what do you mean? There's snow on there. There's no snow. Like we, we plowed the thing the whole damn storm. No, no, there's snow. Like, holy panic mode.
00:58:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
but uh yeah though and i hadn't been there normally i make the rounds of everything and i hadn't been there because i had my own you know storm that big i had my own zone to stay in and make sure we were keeping up with it so that was that was it miscommunication but we uh we got it done and nobody was the wiser
00:59:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
so So we got, what, six weeks left to winter. We got one more possible Nor'easter they're talking about and the next 10 to 14 days, I think Nick said.
00:59:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got snow tomorrow night, maybe more snow midweek. um Is this going to go down? The guys have been doing this a while, like Rick, myself, um you know, all you guys that have been doing it a little bit.
00:59:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Is this going to go down as a record number of pushes for us, you think?
00:59:46
Rick
I don't know if I'd say a record number. It's going to be up there. It's definitely, you know, you know, we've we've had story, you know, we've had winters like this in the past.
00:59:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:55
Rick
um You know, this is definitely up there and it's a long winter. You know, sometimes we would have, you know, an easy December and then we would just get hammered in January and hammered in February and then a light March.
01:00:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:00:07
Rick
this winter just seems to be relentless. Like, you know, it just, we had a bad December, bad January, February is not looking great. March they're saying looks, looks, looks cold and snowy.
01:00:23
mfitz1stdue_
Keep your voice down.
01:00:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
it's not good it's definitely uh i mean well i i i think we'd all feel a lot better if we could get salt
01:00:27
Rick
there's just not a lot of optimism, you know, for the rest of the season.
01:00:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, that's what's freaking me out a little bit because I'm like, if this if we have a bad February, we not even a bad February, if we get five events in February that we have to plow, salt, or bowl, well, I mean, every time we plow, we salt.
01:00:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
So if we have five events in February and then we have three events in March, it's going to get a little dicey.
01:00:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Especially if they don't open up any salt anywhere. And let's face it, like the state doesn't give a shit if we get salt or not as contractors. And they're definitely not going to alleviate us any liability. So that's another worry, you know, for us in a bad winter.
01:01:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
um But we're going to do a whole episode on it. We have a guy that we talked to. Yeah. He actually of ah somebody that we know in the industry sent him to us to tell us.
01:01:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I wish I could give you good news, but he's a very high up in the salt industry. And he he basically said, we're all fucked. He said, this is this is the new normal.
01:01:31
mfitz1stdue_
What a great guy.
01:01:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, no, like he was honest, like he's like, D, he he's this is exactly what he said to me.
01:01:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
The salt industry infrastructure is completely broken. There are things that happened in the last four to five years that have not been replaced. They have not been they've not been dealt with, and this is not going to be something that goes away. This is going to be the new normal, and it's only going to get worse.
01:01:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I'm like, well, you suck. you know Thank you very much you know for scaring the shit out of me now. But, ah yeah, he's got we're going to have him come on, and he's going to do an episode, and he'll he'll lay it all out for you, the whole plan.
01:02:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah it's not – Salt is not a pretty picture going forward.
01:02:09
Luke
what the hell What the hell do we do is the question.
01:02:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah That is the big question.
01:02:11
mfitz1stdue_
Are they any you guys running brine is I mean, are you doing better if you're running brine?
01:02:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Well, I mean, you're using way less salt, that's for sure. To do to to go brine, you're using like way less salt. But I've had this discussion numerous times. Brine is a great alternative, and it's a great it's a great thing to do.
01:02:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
um The CapEx is just the barrier of entry to get a whole brine setup going is just for a company my size.
01:02:35
mfitz1stdue_
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
01:02:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
It doesn't make any sense.
01:02:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
But you might not have a choice. you know go You might not have a choice.
01:02:44
mfitz1stdue_
At this rate.
01:02:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
You might have to do something where you share.
01:02:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, hey, we can't get salt. So Luke and Matt, hey, guess what? we're gonna The three of us are going to go in on a whole brine setup together, and we're going to have to share it. you know We're going have to figure out what works for each other and do
01:03:00
Luke
Just f for friends in the industry. Yeah.
01:03:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Basically, we'll we'll all buy the brine maker. We'll all make, you know, brine out of it, and and we'll have to maybe do something like that, and that that solves ah one issue. But, yeah, the salt...
01:03:13
Rick
Or wego we go back to how it used to be and we we put traction sand down and people get accustomed to having you know some some snow on the parking lots again. you know That's the way it was.
01:03:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I...
01:03:23
Rick
you know Yeah, it's the way it is everywhere else.
01:03:23
Luke
What they do in Canada, right?
01:03:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
But people... But people aren't the problem. It's the fact that you're one of your biggest lobbies in New York. One of your biggest, most successful lobbies in New York is the personal injury attorneys.
01:03:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
So like those guys are not going to do.
01:03:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're not going to let any bill go through New York state that alleviates a liability liability on contractors. So like, I don't know. I don't know. I don't have the answer on what's going to work. It's just, ah you know, it's, it's one big shit burger. That's for sure.
01:03:54
mfitz1stdue_
I think last year, too, like, yeah, there was the salt shortage. There was that scare for a little bit. I think it was right around the same time as well. But, you know, we didn't have the temperatures. And the the reason that plays a big difference is last year they weren't getting the salt as fast to resupply.
01:04:09
mfitz1stdue_
This year they're coming just as fast, but they can't make it up the river. And one of our biggest suppliers coming out of Carver – You know, it there's there's probably three barges stuck in the Hudson River right now.
01:04:21
mfitz1stdue_
I mean, a TikTok came across the other day, one of the guys in the barges, yep, stuck in Kingston for the third week in a row or whatever.
01:04:27
mfitz1stdue_
They they can't cut the ice in time to get them up to Albany. And it's just, it's crazy.
01:04:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:04:32
Luke
I mean, it help I live right on the river, at least by me, and it it did seem to break up but a decent bit the last couple days, just because it has been a little bit warm in the afternoon.
01:04:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was broken today when I took my son to hockey.
01:04:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was broken. But the icebreaker was going up the river this morning. So, I mean...
01:04:46
mfitz1stdue_
Yeah, we're still solid here.
01:04:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Really? Hmm.
01:04:49
mfitz1stdue_
yeah. oh Yeah.
01:04:51
Rick
but even the guys in Connecticut can't get it and they you know what it's coming in off the ocean same in Jersey they're bringing it in Newark it's just they
01:04:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well.
01:04:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:04:59
Rick
You know, it just I don't know if it was everything down south. Maybe they shipped a lot down south with those storms. But, you know, no one around here has it.
01:05:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, I will tell you this.
01:05:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
i will i will ask all of you. When you were plowing that monster storm fern, did you salt while you were plowing it all day?
01:05:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay, the DOTs did.
01:05:20
Luke
They did. Yeah, I noticed that.
01:05:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
So they burned up. We were plowing, what, 24 hours, 30 hours, and we used one one application. The DOTs, the local highway departments, they were dumping salt the whole time.
01:05:37
Rick
And that's why we can't get it.
01:05:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
So that's exactly why you can't get it.
01:05:40
mfitz1stdue_
you need some ah nighttime trucks to go missing.
01:05:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
the the the dots is where any any kind of problem with salt over usage you you'd have to start with the dots and the highway departments and they don't give a shit most yeah that's the way it's been for 50 years that's what we're doing yeah yep just keep dropping 2 000 pounds per lane mile you know no matter what and they're
01:05:54
RICK JAMES
that's the way they do it. That's the way they do it every time. So I'm not going to change it like a dairy cow. Like a dairy cow. Just keep doing the same thing over and over.
01:06:06
Luke
I know. I was like, I was behind a truck and he was, he was scraping, but there was still at least like two inches, you know, just, and he's, no, and he's dumping, he's dumping.
01:06:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, those plows don't scrape clean.
01:06:18
Luke
I'm just looking at thousands of dollars fall out of the back of his truck. and I'm like, dude, this isn't doing anything. Like, what is the point?
01:06:24
mfitz1stdue_
I'll tell you what, my local, my town here, town of Ulster, they're on it.
01:06:28
mfitz1stdue_
Those guys cleared. It looked amazing. the Same thing with the state guy. I'll give the state guy some credit. City Kingston, I think they closed shop ah for at least two days. I don't think they showed up.
01:06:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, you the key word is city.
01:06:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Put any name after that. Put any name after that, and it's the same outcome with snow.
01:06:46
mfitz1stdue_
I was happy, though, that we didn't have to salt too much to it because i just got – I talked about it last episode we were on. I just got my salt spreader, one of my salt spreaders up and going again. we were i was
Refreezing and Salt Management
01:06:57
mfitz1stdue_
talking to Luke about it the last time.
01:06:58
mfitz1stdue_
I saw you got that aftermarket wiring in there now. It's pretty cool, but it took me all this time just to get mine going again.
01:07:05
Luke
Yeah. That's why my salter wasn't really even working the last storm and i wasn't completely worried about it because I knew it would have fixed by Tuesday, but my buddy Dylan had sent me this link a long time ago and He was like, dude, just get it now and install it.
01:07:17
Luke
I overnight shipped it and it still took four days, but I got it.
01:07:20
Luke
all connects right to my Fisher.
01:07:23
Luke
It's super simple. It dumbs the thing down. It's got a wireless controller and it's freaking awesome, man. I've been loving it. um But yeah, I wasn't too worried about like, not I didn't even have a salt there for most of the storm.
01:07:34
Luke
I had it hooked up to a 12 volt battery in my truck. And I was like, if it works, it works.
01:07:38
Luke
If it doesn't, it doesn't. It wasn't a problem for me to salt until Tuesday morning, honestly. But since last, since last Tuesday, I've been salting every day.
01:07:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
We didn't.
01:07:46
Luke
i salted this whole week. I've been touching stuff up and salting.
01:07:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, that was what I was going to say. The one thing that saved us this week from using a lot of salt was it was below freezing at all times. If we had melt off during the day and then the temperatures dropped again at night, we would have gone through a shit ton salt.
01:08:06
Luke
Yeah, started to notice that the last couple days because it has been a tiny bit warmer during the day and even just the sun popping out has started to melt off a little and the pilots have gotten a little soft and melted off.
01:08:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Well,
01:08:15
Luke
And we definitely had some refreezes, had to go touch up.
01:08:18
Rick
We had stuff coming off roofs.
01:08:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
It happened.
01:08:20
Rick
That was our big thing. Coming off eaves and frozen gutters and on the sidewalk edges.
01:08:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Yep.
01:08:26
Rick
We didn't have a lot in the in the lots, but ah the roofs definitely started melting a little when the sun was hitting them.
01:08:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, I bet.
01:08:33
mfitz1stdue_
Our gas stations, our our
Client Gratitude and Contractor Reflections
01:08:35
mfitz1stdue_
the gas station, was it was every single night. You would you would salt the spots dripping off the roof. It would spread the salt by midday, and you'd go back the same night for the same exact spot. It was like, give me a break, man. Yeah.
01:08:48
Luke
Those gas station roofs, they always leak from the corners.
01:08:51
Luke
They come right off roof.
01:08:51
mfitz1stdue_
i sp Yeah, exactly.
01:08:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
uh you know what let's hit some commercials real quick and we'll come back we'll keep going with the boys
01:10:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, gang, we're back. We're back. So what else do we got to talk about with that storm? Anything? Anything we want um when we want to touch on or anything we missed?
01:10:17
mfitz1stdue_
Only thing I can say is just the amount of failures, the amount of, it was, and I, the people that reached out to me, my clients that were like, thank you so much for doing the job that you said you were going to do.
01:10:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
want everybody jump on.
01:10:20
Matt
Basically, it's a good thing.
01:10:30
mfitz1stdue_
I have one of my lots is attached. It's, it's a split, a lot, pretty large lot on each side.
01:10:36
mfitz1stdue_
and the other one, i tried getting their contract. He didn't want to do it too much money. I pull into that entrance. So to get to my, my, ah my side every now and then, and, I got halfway through the parking lot, and I realized three-quarters of the parking lot was not plowed. And then, like, a quarter of it was, like, attempted. And then he just stopped because he couldn't push in because he's a guy shows up at the end of the storm, and that's what you get.
01:10:59
mfitz1stdue_
And that's what they want to pay for. And I think it was almost a week later that I saw some tracks from a loader. in there pushing it back. And I was just like, I can't believe not having my site cleared a week later. But the amount of like thank yous and like people I'd never even heard from, like the CEOs or like the main, the heads of these reaching out personally, either by phone or email to be like, thank you.
01:11:21
mfitz1stdue_
Because we we saw the difference this storm. That that was a that was a ah big kudos.
01:11:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:11:28
mfitz1stdue_
That was like a really good feeling at the end of it. Like especially a storm like that. was like, wow, like that's one guy sent me a hundred dollar gift card at Dunkin Donuts. And I was like, that's the craziest thing anybody's ever done for me in the snow.
01:11:38
mfitz1stdue_
Thank you very much. Like, that's awesome, you know.
01:11:42
mfitz1stdue_
you know just I told all the guys through just the amazing job they did and just how much feedback we got back and how good we did. that was That was probably the biggest thing out of everything. i couldn't couldn't thank them enough and everybody that helped achieve it. so
01:11:56
Luke
Yeah, I think I definitely had the had a similar similar experience, just people coming out of the woodworks, like owners of the places and stuff and just being like, thank you so much.
01:11:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
cruis ah The cruiser key.
01:12:05
Luke
We're so dependent on you and your reliability and the fact that you come here and do such a good job and keep us safe. and like you know it's It was a really cool feeling. And i kind of so I spread that with my employees and just thank them for that too.
01:12:20
Luke
Yeah, that was that was the that was really cool.
01:12:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
This is a, you don't, you don't, this is the type of winter though, where we've said for a long time, we've said weve we need a winter like this.
01:12:23
Luke
What you don't always get from your customers is
01:12:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
We need a a market reset winter. We need a winter that just kicks everybody's ass so that we can, so the customer can tell the men from the boys and the, you know, who to hire and what they're actually paying for.
01:12:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Now I get, I've had more discussions this week with, I get it now. I understand what you've been talking about. what we bid a We bid at one contract two two years yeah two years ago, so 24. We were asked to bid on a contract. We bid on it, and the guy said...
01:13:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
I love everything in it. You are way too expensive. We have bids that are literally less than half of that. I said, good luck. I mean, listen, roll the dice, go to Vegas, you know, black or red.
01:13:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
What do you want to do?
01:13:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
i See how it works out. When you get a winter, a real winter and real snowstorms, I know what that dollar amount is going to get you, and it's not what you think it's going to get you. And he he I give him a lot of credit. He called this storm. He goes, I get it now.
01:13:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Everything you were saying understood. Can you take us next year? No. But oh no, um my dance card is full, but I can tell you who to look at because, you know, you got the this storm separated
01:13:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
This was a rep builder or a rep reinforcer. If you didn't have a rep and you handled this storm properly and you did right for your clients, you you got street cred. If you already had street cred and you nailed this storm, you are going to like elite status where people are going to understand what your prices are are looking like, why they are that, because you can deliver in a storm like that.
Post-Storm Trust and Reputation Building
01:14:22
Luke
think that it was definitely like a ah test, at least for myself. i don't know about you guys, but definitely before the storm, it, I was asking myself, like, can I handle this?
01:14:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Thank you.
01:14:31
Luke
Can I handle a storm this size? Cause I've scaled my business quite a bit since, I mean, to your earlier point, Steve, like, is this the biggest storm of your career? For me, I've, I'm young. I've, this is just under my like 10th year of doing this.
01:14:44
Luke
And this has definitely been the biggest winter. Um, for me and at this scale. And that was like a ah huge question for me before the storm. Can I handle this and can I perform? And I think that the pressure of the storm only made me perform better.
01:14:58
Luke
And the fact that we got everything done and had 100% of our clientele taken care of by Monday afternoon, the absolute latest was just a really good feeling to know that I can handle a storm of that size and and get it done.
01:15:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think even the most prepared, I think Rick would probably say, yeah when these big storms roll in, even guys have been doing it and have all the iron in the world. We still ask ourselves, shit, are we going to be able to fucking do this?
01:15:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, like, we'll get it done somehow. But you, you will always have nerves.
01:15:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's being conscientious. If you roll in there thinking everything's going to go well, that is no fucking problem.
01:15:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got it. You always are worried about, did I forget anything? Have I done everything possible to put the guys in the best position to succeed? You know, you're always worried about that stuff.
01:15:44
Rick
that's what That's what makes you good at it.
01:15:46
Rick
You know, you gotta just, you gotta keep thinking of everything that you don't think of and, you know, stuff happens no matter how good you, you know, how,
01:15:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Exactly.
01:15:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
01:15:54
Rick
how good your equipment is, how good everything is, stuff comes off and it's just how you handle it.
01:15:58
Rick
You know, you just, you gotta, you mitigate how you can, you shuffle some things around and you push through it and you get through.
01:16:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
01:16:06
Rick
um Steve, you know, like Steve said, it,
01:16:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
have a Have a plan B and plan C already in place. You're probably going to need them.
01:16:12
Rick
But like everything that Steve said, you know, a spot on, you know, this this was a storm that the customers realized who, you know, who the main guys are, who the guy, you know, who the guys, you know, who did what they said they could do.
01:16:28
Rick
You know, a lot of people say they can do things and oh yeah, we'll do it.
01:16:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:16:31
Rick
And, you know, they can't. and And this, I had a lot again, and snow is kind of, ah it's a thankless You know, you normally only get phone calls when something's wrong. And this was a nice storm that we had a lot of our property managers, owners calling us and saying, hey, you know, you guys really, you know, you knocked it out of the park.
01:16:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:16:52
Rick
And, you know, how many more of our centers can you do next year? Can you take over? five more, you know, how far will you travel?
01:17:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:17:00
Rick
so it was, you know, I got a lot of those phone calls, so it was good to hear.
01:17:04
Rick
So, you know, it just reinforces to know just what you're doing is working and, and, you know, putting in the work and making sure you're ready and prepared and all those days that we spent prepping before just to make sure everything would go as smooth, you know, it it pays off.
01:17:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep, 100%.
01:17:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
we got we We got a ah you guys are amazing from our biggest hater in ah in one of the the one complex we've had for five years.
01:17:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
She has not stopped complaining since day one that we are way too expensive for snow. They should not be hiring you. You're too expensive. You know, I, she has not stopped every, literally every day.
01:17:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
And she actually came out while the guys were cleaning up the equipment two days later, refueling stuff like that. And she said, I don't know how you guys did that. That was amazing.
01:17:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, thank you so much. Like, I'm like, wow, holy crap.
01:18:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm going to drop dead right now. This woman hates us.
01:18:03
RICK JAMES
Is that her voice?
01:18:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
think Things were overpaid and
01:18:04
Luke
And this, it, it's cool.
01:18:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
that was That was pretty much her voice too.
01:18:08
mfitz1stdue_
Poor parents.
01:18:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I'm good with impressions. but
01:18:11
Luke
It's cool too, because this is exactly what we talked about on the pre-storm episode.
01:18:16
Luke
And we talked about this being the outcome. Now that we're through a storm of this scale on the other side of it, we talked about all of these things and they all came to fruition. But we definitely, you know, there's respect back into what we do a little bit and just hopefully people's memories or they can remember this next year and years going forward that we do still have winters like this.
01:18:36
Luke
And um it's important that you have the right contractor for it.
01:18:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
The best position you could possibly be in right now is if you're a contractor that's and on the last year of your multi-year deal and and and you just performed in that storm and in this winter, because whatever markup you're going to go with, you're going to be able to justify This is why this is why you pay that.
01:19:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
and And it's going to be fresh in their memory because now they've had they've had a ah a very good winter followed by a you know like a very good – last year was a good winter for us.
01:19:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
like That was ah an old school.
01:19:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
like We were above a little bit above average, but we were way over on events. And so we they saw servicing a lot. But this year we had the big bangers to you know to reinforce that, hey, when when you get the big ones, these these guys are –
01:19:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
these guys are good they're equipped they they have a plan they know how to do it like it was such a cool thing one one of the people said like your system of clearing how you were clearing so fast on the roads was we ran a loader down the middle with a 13 and we ran a skid down each curb line picking up the wind row and running the curb and they were clearing 500 feet at a time
01:19:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
And dumping in, you know, a minute, minute and a half. And they were just, they were flying through doing it that way.
01:20:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're like, that was amazing for us to sit inside and watch, like how you guys got that all done.
01:20:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
And, you know, it's doing the driveways multiple times. It didn't take long, but you got to have a plan. And then you got to have a plan when that plan goes to shit. And then you got to have a plan when that second plan breaks.
01:20:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, it's, you you have to have pivot points. where, okay, if this happens, we're going to go to this. If this happens, we're going to consolidate here. you know And you got to have that. If you don't have that ready to go you know on your emergency checklist, then you're going to be a little bit behind the eight ball. But this was a great storm for guys that care about doing snow and are trying to do it right.
01:20:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
if you If they got it done, this is ah this like I said, this is a rep builder. for the younger guys uh in the area if they got it done but there were a lot of dudes that didn't well dude there there's still places that are fucking disasters that are hard pack and and like you see blacktop every yeah every couple feet but there's still shit on the pavement because they just couldn't get it done you know reg protex are not going to cut it in in that kind of environment
01:21:15
Luke
Well, like Mike was saying, we have one of those split lots where it's my property and then another contractor. And when we were there doing snow relocation, the pile, the main pile where we put everything is right at the end of the lot, but it goes on both sides.
01:21:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
yep.
01:21:29
Luke
And when we were there clearing, I was like, let's split this thing down the middle, right on the lamppost.
01:21:34
Luke
We'll take our pile and we're going leave his pile because I'm not going to move snow for free.
01:21:38
Luke
And just the contrast between our pile being gone and his being there, I think speaks for itself.
01:21:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Absolutely.
01:21:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
and And it's going to be another, the the other great thing coming out of this winter is you're going to see a lot of guys, you're going see two things happen.
01:21:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
A lot of the low ballers have failed and are going to wrap it up and call it a day. But also what happens after a good winter is you're going to see a a whole other bunch of guys that will just throw a plow on a truck and start throwing prices around.
01:22:08
mfitz1stdue_
um look at the money they made that year.
01:22:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah.
01:22:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, look at all that money.
01:22:12
Luke
I think a lot of people
01:22:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
Logistical Challenges and Strategy
01:22:13
Luke
quit the snow game itself and then like you said a lot of people are going to be like oh my gosh wow those guys must make a lot of money let me get a couple of plows and just start yeah yeah yeah when you're up for 100 hours and 4 days tell me about it
01:22:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah Yeah. It sounds like an awesome idea.
01:22:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. But yeah.
01:22:27
mfitz1stdue_
you guys have business phones?
01:22:29
mfitz1stdue_

01:22:29
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:22:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:22:33
Luke

01:22:36
mfitz1stdue_
Oh, my God. these i finally When I finally took my break, I changed my voicemail. If you need me and it's emergency, call this number.
01:22:46
mfitz1stdue_
I had 45 missed calls in a two-hour period.
01:22:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Who's calling you?
01:22:55
mfitz1stdue_
There's so many residential, i have several commercial. Hey, nobody showed up.
01:22:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah, got to cut them loose.
01:22:59
mfitz1stdue_
i'm like I'm like, I just stop. I just wait for the voicemail. If you leave a voicemail, you're important not enough to at least figure out what the hell you want. If you don't, the sorry, you're not getting a call back. But the amount of calls I receive, I got to i got multiple calls from Long Island.
01:23:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Here's... I'll give you even worse. Yeah, I'll give you even worse. I always answer the phone.
01:23:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
If the business number rings, i always answer.
01:23:21
Luke
I never answer during a snowstorm.
01:23:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
I always answer.
01:23:23
Luke
i let it go to snowstorm. Yeah, no, I don't do that.
01:23:26
mfitz1stdue_
If it was...
01:23:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's my...
01:23:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, yeah.
01:23:29
Luke
If you call twice, I'll
01:23:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, dude, they were calling from everywhere. Yeah, Long Island, ah Connecticut, Jersey. A lot of calls from Jersey, but Jersey is its own problem down there. that's you got you think You think low bidding is bad up here?
01:23:39
RICK JAMES

01:23:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Try going down when you get closer to the Metroplex down there.
01:23:47
mfitz1stdue_
the city's still digging out. It's crazy.
01:23:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, they just that's because that's cause they just fucking started.
01:23:49
mfitz1stdue_

01:23:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's crazy.
01:23:52
mfitz1stdue_
Yeah. thanks
01:23:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, we got to move this shit out?
01:23:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, oh no. The new regime.
01:23:58
Luke
You see the one yeah but they don't even have, they don't have like trucks there.
01:23:59
mfitz1stdue_
um look there
01:24:02
Luke
They were just taking it from the curb and spreading it in the street.
01:24:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's what they do. They spread it and they salt it.
01:24:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
They don't actually remove anything. They can't really. I mean, there's cars on both sides of the streets.
01:24:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Those cars ain't moving until April.
01:24:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're not getting out of there. There's not much they can do with it.
01:24:17
mfitz1stdue_
the best The best I saw was ah a sanitation bobcat doing donuts in the middle of the street.
01:24:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Kill some time. What did you have, Jay? You had something, Jeremy?
01:24:29
RICK JAMES
I said you never answered my call when I called you.
01:24:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, stop. I always call you back. I'm saying that the business, you you didn't ring the business line.
01:24:40
Luke
A quick question for everybody for like this weekend storm with this the salt issue. Is tomorrow something you try to salt off and pre-salt? Now are you just letting it flow?
01:24:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nope. No, I'm scraping.
01:24:52
Rick
no yeah we're scraping i got crews there talk to everyone got everyone set i'm hoping we do a quick scrape off you know stays you know babysitter for a few hours then then then salt it yeah
01:25:00
Luke
Then like, let's solve.
01:25:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:25:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Let the daylight do its job.
01:25:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's supposed to, the sun's supposed to come out when it's done. So.
01:25:12
Rick
there's so There's a lot of salt on the lots too from from everything.
01:25:12
mfitz1stdue_
You know, what?
01:25:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's very seasoned.
01:25:14
Luke
There is, yeah, yeah.
01:25:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's very seasoned.
01:25:17
Rick
I don't even think we're going to pre-treat.
01:25:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't think we're going to pre-treat.
01:25:20
Matt
No, I don't think so.
01:25:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
we'll We'll probably pre-treat two hills, but that's it. Everything else is seasoned. We've had no moisture. The lots are all, everything's white, you know, so long as it's white, you're good to go.
01:25:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
As long as you still see that dust as you're driving down the road on every freaking road and parking lot, you're good to go. That'll melt off. That'll that'll get you a half
Mental Toll and Team Morale
01:25:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
an inch even in these temps.
01:25:42
mfitz1stdue_
I'm a huge, a huge, like ah mental health advocate. And I know Luke, you talked about just a simple, you know, eating healthy throughout a storm like that, bringing some food with you. Do you guys do anything specifically? Obviously it was like taxing physically, mentally, like anything at all you do throughout the storm or maybe the day after that just like recoups your, your mental health a little bit. Like, Holy shit, we got through it.
01:26:03
mfitz1stdue_
Is there anything specific any of you guys do besides eating healthy or trying to eat healthy? Anything like that?
01:26:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
During it, the party call, the being being on a multi, you know having seven, eight guys on a call that are all just breaking balls, having fun, that that really passed the time, and it has laughs, it keeps it light, and absolutely.
01:26:23
RICK JAMES
Insult insults your buddies all night long. Make fun of them.
01:26:26
RICK JAMES
i mean that's that's That's what you do.
01:26:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, that's exactly what they do. They all break my balls about weather reports and that I love doing snow so much. Maybe not anymore, but...
01:26:35
Luke
Yeah, I think that i think that that that helps a lot. Just calling, like, Steve, I talked to you during snowstorm.
01:26:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:26:40
Luke
I talked to my other friends during snowstorm. That, like, definitely helps a lot. Besides that, man, like, I don't know. It seems like everything else went to shit last time. Like, that eating healthy thing. I was fucking eating McDonald's.
01:26:51
Luke
McDonald's was closed. i
01:26:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wherever it was open.
01:26:53
Rick
I can't even get anything to eat.
01:26:55
Luke
No, I couldn't get anything to eat.
01:26:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, you couldn't.
01:26:57
Luke
I was just like, it was tough out there. I mean, that's it's tough to stay mentally. That's the hardest
Fuel Shortages and Creative Planning
01:27:02
Luke
part of this, honestly, is the mental situation.
01:27:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
i I will give Flory's Fish Guild credit. Like, I give them...
01:27:06
Luke
Yeah, they were clear and open the entire...
01:27:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
They were open the whole time, and even though the kitchen was closed, if you...
01:27:12
Matt
Yeah, they closed at three. Ooh.
01:27:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, well, they said if you guys really need something, just call and give us 25 minutes, and we'll fire up the... we Like, we can make you eggs and bacon, like bacon, egg, and cheese, and stuff. We can't go full menu, but...
01:27:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, I thought that was cool.
01:27:26
Rick
I had like a gas station hot dog at eight o'clock at night. That's about all I ate that day. I was, was so, I was like, do I want to do this?
01:27:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
LAUGHTER
01:27:32
mfitz1stdue_
The glizzy. Yeah.
01:27:33
Rick
I'm like, I'm really hungry, but do I want to do this?
01:27:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I hear you.
01:27:39
Rick
Everywhere was, everything was closed.
01:27:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nothing was open. Everything was closed.
01:27:41
Rick
Even some of the the the gas stations were closing.
01:27:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:27:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Which was smart.
01:27:44
Rick
People who were having a time getting fuel.
01:27:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:27:47
Luke
That's why I had made sure I had plenty of fuel all my stuff before. because I was like, you know, these gas stations might close. And there was one, i think one that was open by me.
01:27:55
Rick
We were fueling throughout the storm.
01:27:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
The one.
01:27:57
Rick
It was like constant.
01:27:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah.
01:27:58
Rick
We were burning so much fuel. And then...
01:28:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Fuel bill was huge.
01:28:02
Rick
And then i i I was getting nervous because a couple of my friends that do stormo were like, hey, do you have diesel over there? Like, we can't get diesel. I'm like, everything's closed.
01:28:10
Rick
Like, I've already gone through my transfer tank. This one's closed and that one's closing. So I called the guy that brings us home heating oil. And I said, hey, I said, is your truck inside in the, you know, in your shop? He's like, yeah, it is.
01:28:20
Rick
He's like, it's got, you know, 3,500 gallons. If you need fuel, he said, run up there and you can fill your tank. So, but it was, it was getting a little dicey trying to get fuel.
01:28:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
01:28:29
Luke
yeah Yeah, that's why if we really got that second – if we got that – they were even saying Blizzard the following weekend, I think we would have been in them for a world of art.
01:28:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh yeah yeah that wouldn't have been any fun it's yeah it's ah it's it's a never-ending battle man
01:28:38
mfitz1stdue_
Shout out to all you guys with the heated shops, man. My truck still has snow melting on it from last week, no matter how many times I pressure wash it.
01:28:51
Matt
I have to give my wife some credit because I had all 15 of my guys over at my house.
01:28:57
Matt
She cooked dinner for everybody.
01:28:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome. Good for her.
01:29:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
She's
01:29:01
mfitz1stdue_
She's sitting right next you, isn't she? She's told you to say that.
01:29:02
Matt
Nah, she's upstairs sleeping.
01:29:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
got a big sign with a gun.
01:29:06
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:29:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
01:29:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wow, good for her. That's awesome. my wife will
01:29:14
Matt
Everywhere was closed.
01:29:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah My wife would have cooked for the guys, but that would not have gone well. because
01:29:21
Rick
My wife and kids shoveled all the sidewalks at the house. So when I got home at night, I could actually walk you know once up to the door.
01:29:28
Rick
They kept all the walks done. So that was nice. So I just had to do the driveway.
01:29:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah my son did that too i said i am not coming home and having to do my driveway or my wall actually the driveway i actually if i have to back blade out six inches i'll do that but i do not want to shovel walker porch so make sure it's done
01:29:44
Luke
I did my driveway four days later.
01:29:48
Luke
I wasn't home for four days.
01:29:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
i bet and your gravel too right yeah oh okay
01:29:49
Luke
I didn't care if my driveway had snow on it. Yeah.
01:29:54
Luke
it's I rolled it, though. It's crushed millings asphalt, so it's solid.
01:30:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go.
Community Support and Season Wrap-Up
01:30:01
mfitz1stdue_
We had We had a guy... ah the The only gas station that was open near my my large site was ah was a Stewart's. And I thought I had it bad. He's kind of like shooting the shit with me as I'm getting some stuff. Like, it's late.
01:30:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, mean, go ahead.
01:30:15
mfitz1stdue_
And he's like, you you're surviving out there, bro? And I'm like, yeah, you know, it's kind of a shit night, you know, we're getting through. And he's like, oh, it could always be worse. I'm like, I don't know. This is pretty bad right now.
01:30:25
mfitz1stdue_
And he's like, well, he's like, I live in Fishkill and I'm sleeping on the floor of a Stewart's tonight. So it could always be worse.
01:30:33
mfitz1stdue_
And I was like, oof, yeah, I am going to go sleep somewhere at some point. It's a lot comfier than the floor of a Stewart's gas station. Yeah.
01:30:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, that's exactly what happened.
01:30:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Valero, the guy actually said, my relief, the person that's relieving me can't get into work, so I'm just going to, I've been here for 18 hours already. I'm going to go till midnight, and then I'm shutting the lights off, and I'm sleeping on the floor.
01:30:56
Rick
We had one guy, he slept in our office.
01:30:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
01:30:58
Rick
He brought a cot. He's like he's got a 45-minute ride home, and he's like, why bother?
01:31:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, why bother?
01:31:04
Rick
Yeah, so he he slept in the office. We had a couple sidewalk guys that slept in ah in a vacant space.
01:31:11
Rick
um It was just easier, and I get it. When you're that tired, you don't want to go fight trying to drive home for 45 minutes or an hour.
01:31:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice I agree
01:31:18
Rick
don't want it to take you.
01:31:18
RICK JAMES
I can't believe you guys go sleep during a storm.
01:31:20
RICK JAMES
What the hell is that like?
01:31:22
Luke

01:31:22
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:31:27
Luke
Did anybody have any salt freeze up in their salt throws besides me?
01:31:32
Luke
No. Yeah, I spent about an hour and 30 minutes at like 4 a.m. on Monday morning fucking chiseling out of my salt.
01:31:40
Rick
Windshield washer fluid usually works good.
01:31:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
what you using straight yeah using them straight salt
01:31:40
Luke
Yeah. Yeah, I used four jugs. that that It wasn't work. My gas station was actually closed. No, it was actually, it was sand and salt. It was a disaster.
01:31:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh yeah the moisture in the sand yep
01:31:52
Luke
Walter stopped working. I couldn't get it out. I let it sit. I needed the weight in the back, but I got it out. It happened twice, but we got it. Oh, and I also had call the cops on somebody in my commercial lot for harassing us when we were moving snow.
01:31:59
mfitz1stdue_
It did make for a good Insta video.
01:32:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, all right. That's interesting.
01:32:09
Luke
Yep. That was the highlight of the week.
01:32:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah.
01:32:12
Luke
That was nice, though. We were relaxed by Friday night when we were doing that, and I was like, this is fun.
01:32:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
01:32:17
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:32:47
Matt

The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, the magic magic doesn't freeze, so it doesn't freeze up.
01:32:55
Luke

01:33:00
Luke
For me, the gamble was, do i do I have to chisel out some some sand and salt or do I not get out my driveways? And I was like, they can yeah, I had to.
01:33:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, no, you need it. You
01:33:10
