The SnowJobs Podcast: oh shit dude you're so funny so that's where we're from we we just got back from stork snow alliance 2026 out in pennsylvania uh great time and that's what we're gonna do tonight as always we always give them the post storks review show uh they love that they they let us know that they actually all listen to it on i guess wednesday night they all gather and eat some reheat some leftovers and talk about next year and

RICK JAMES: Yes.

RICK JAMES: The food, we're food critics, I think it's what everybody tells us what we are now, right

The SnowJobs Podcast: continued to amaze and somehow improve upon the year before so uh it's crazy so we got some guys to help us do that tonight to talk about their experiences at stork we got graham utter of gh in canada he was allowed to come across and back on the border with a minimal minimal to no problems uh they did let jeremy kirkham i did check in with him they let him back over with no issues so they walked

The SnowJobs Podcast: um it's American products coming back across the border. It needs to get taxed, man. But yeah, so we got Graham with us today. we got Steve Wallace from Great Lakes Snow out in Illinois.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Steve attended his first Storks this year. He came out with his 14-year-old son who had his birthday while we were there.

RICK JAMES: Hey, boy.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And that was a lot of fun. He had quite the haul of merch from everybody. So yeah I'm sure he had a good weekend. It's always great to get a first-timers perspective that hasn't hasn't seen the evolution of the event. That's now four years in the books.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah We got Sean unprepared DiVincenzo of native Snow, New Jersey, who caused us to go off like 10 minutes late tonight because nothing ever worked in the DiVincenzo world there.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, you're showing up for recording. You think you'd have your shit worked out. Like maybe you show up 10 minutes early and make sure your stuff works. Not sure.

RICK JAMES: He's not even listening to you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: He's not listening.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah He's not listening. That is the problem. And we got Patty Salmon from Northeast De-Icing. Pat is, ah you know, he's always with us on these trips and we had a great time. it was a lot to talk about. Definitely a lot to talk about. They've increased this event every year, all the stuff around it. It's actually become quite a long two days.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: yeah There was a lot of people that flew in for this, which is awesome. That just shows it's growing, it's gaining traction, and we're very happy.

RICK JAMES: I think Gene needs to put a map up and everybody's put a pin where they're from.

They're they're a team and they're a family in every sense of the word. um And it's always a team thing, but the individuals that make up that team, they really deserve to be mentioned by name. The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep. Yep. It's been a couple days. it's ah It was a long couple days, but a great couple days. So let's I want to start with Steve. He was there for the first time this year.

The SnowJobs Podcast: i brought his son. So, Steve, what did you think overall your first storks?

Steve Walus: Well, I can tell you my expectations are pretty high just by listening to the show. I'm like, I know it's going to be good food.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Steve Walus: and It's going to be a good event. And it blew me away. Like they set the bar even higher, I guess, this year because it was overall good. and ah you guys mentioned it was a little longer this year. But to me, that was like the perfect couple days just to be able to fly. And especially that it's on a Saturday. You know, we're all working. We're all got families and doing stuff. So.

Steve Walus: It was nice to kind of go there and do a quick trip, get back home.

Graeme Utter: Thank you.

Steve Walus: Now it's Sunday. We got the rest of the week to work. so But overall, super, super happy with the event.

The SnowJobs Podcast: All right. So let's let's start with Friday. So what did everybody do on Friday? We'll go around the room. We'll start with Graham. What did you guys do in the morning? What did you guys do in the afternoon? It's now a two-day kind of event.

Graeme Utter: Well, we started on Thursday night, actually, because we're on our way down and got invited to a dinner that Scott Lezak was putting on.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That is true. Yep.

Graeme Utter: So I thought, oh, that's great.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Nice.

Graeme Utter: So we stopped in there and lo and behold, the guy paid for everybody's dinner, too, which I was not expecting. So I was, ah you know, for small guys like us, it's like, wow, I come down here and you're welcomed by, you know, the snow kings of the industry, you know, out of Pennsylvania, right?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Nice.

Graeme Utter: Like, it's pretty cool.

RICK JAMES: you

Graeme Utter: um And then, yeah, Friday, we played played golf in the morning.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Very cool.

Graeme Utter: to me

The SnowJobs Podcast: How'd that go?

Graeme Utter: And it's not bad. Not bad. I figured, like, the worst thing, a bunch of guys that did snow this winter, being stressed out all winter long and having a long, tough winter, the worst thing they need is ah playing a game of golf just to set them over the edge. But it's actually where really they good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Well, that event was sponsored by Arctic, which, you know, they they must have known it was, i mean, obviously they knew it was all snow guys because they had plenty of boxes of balls for everybody. They knew guys would be out of balls by the eighth tee.

Graeme Utter: had cool and full liquor too, which was also great at 28 in the morning.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, I tell you what, we did figure out, Jeremy and I were talking about the golf thing, and as the scores started to come in, we figured out that next year, one of the things we'll sponsor for that event are the Snow Jobs Erasers for the scorecards.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, man. So the golf was good. The course looked like it was in good shape.

Graeme Utter: Oh, it was beautiful. It was beautiful. um Yeah, no complaints there at all. It was a great course. It was fairly easy. Like, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. It was fairly straight, good to play, well-maintained.

Patty Salmon: Thank you.

Graeme Utter: um The thing they were missing was a card girl, but that's okay.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah. Well, I mean, you had the eighth hole.

Graeme Utter: Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So when we hit that at 8 in the morning, it was good. Good way to start off.

Graeme Utter: And then, yeah, lunch.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha, gotcha.

Graeme Utter: The lunch that Artic put on next door at the house there, and that was the best barbecue I've ever had in my life. It was phenomenal.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It was good, right?

Graeme Utter: It was amazing. Yeah, yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That was Stampede Barbecue.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, it was good.

Graeme Utter: Yeah, I never had chicken lunch life.

RICK JAMES: Yep, it was really good.

Graeme Utter: It was fantastic.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, it's it's hard for me to give anybody better brisket than Mission Barbecue, but man, a that that was really, really good.

Graeme Utter: It was, it was. So, I mean, yeah, it was an incredible day, tons of fun. You know, we got to play with a couple other Canadians, Jeremy and and Randy, and yeah, we had a great time. Can't wait to do it again next year.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Steve, what did you do in the morning on Friday?

Steve Walus: I did the EMI tour.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. How was that?

Steve Walus: that was That was really good. I'm always trying to like make my shop better. I actually just signed a lease at my shop now and I'm kind of kicking around like my plans for when that expires of how I'm going to maybe build a new shop or do something.

Steve Walus: So it was kind of just great to see their operation.

Patty Salmon: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Steve Walus: And then they had it kind of set up in like five different zones. So it kind of went around and got to know their whole staff. They were really welcoming. One of the things that kind of stuck out was that they even admitted their shortfalls this year and you know all the things that they didn't like that they did and kind of corrections they made it through midwinter, which we all do, but sometimes when you go to events like those it's just kind of sugar coated. It's like they're the best, but they were far from that. They were really honest.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, no, they're they're pretty, they'll tell you. Like, I think even when Bob, when he was on doing his episode, he was, ah you know, he was pretty forthcoming with, yeah, we tried this, this didn't work.

Patty Salmon: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So we went in this direction. yeah, they're pretty, their culture is ah is one of it definitely admitting, hey, this didn't work.

Steve Walus: Right.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Let's move forward and have a different course of action.

Steve Walus: Yeah. And and the like everything else, the food was good there. They got nice iron. They got nice equipment. And one thing I took away, been trying to find a way to store all my chains and binders at my shop for the longest time.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

Steve Walus: And I had to take a picture because they had just something in the corner. It's like one of those little tips that you learn from this stuff.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep.

Steve Walus: And it was just a rolling cart that had a post welded on. And I'm like, oh, that's genius. I'm taking that taking that with me.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Genius. So simple. It makes you feel dumb when you see something like that. Like, how the fuck did I not think of that?

Graeme Utter: No.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But, man, genius.

Steve Walus: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, shit. All right. So that was your morning. What time was that over with?

Steve Walus: I want to say after lunch, we got it we had a race back.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Steve Walus: And at 2, we had the thing at Stork's.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep, we'll get to them. Patty, what did you do in the morning on Friday?

Patty Salmon: Yeah, I hit the ah golf course with you and Rick James and the Arctic crew.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep, you did. Yep.

Patty Salmon: Did that Friday morning. The yeah after after event at the the house was was pretty good. The barbecue. Then what a and we stopped over to Storks. They had some stuff going on in the afternoon.

Patty Salmon: Did some networking.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep, we definitely did.

Patty Salmon: They had a couple panels going on. And then we had the case construction party in the evening.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yep, we'll get to that. Sean, what about your morning Friday?

Graeme Utter: Thank you.

Native Snow: Yeah, I went golfing for the fourth time ever.

The SnowJobs Podcast: we did go We did go head over to Storks after after the golf. we ah We wanted to check out, make sure our merch got there, set up a little bit of stuff.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And ah they actually let you check in on Friday, which I thought was very cool.

RICK JAMES: That was good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, that was smart. So you wouldn't have such a mad rush on Saturday morning. Check-in, as always, was seamless, right? Anybody have an issue with check-in?

The SnowJobs Podcast: 100% their team like they're just a well oiled machine there's the you can't say enough about it but uh yeah so I mean we we checked in then on Friday and then did Steve did you do the uh the panels the round tables how worth did anybody else do em Graham did you do them

Graeme Utter: No, we just came and checked in and just had a quick walk around with my guys to kind of show where everything was going to be. And then we we took off and got ready for the party.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Gotcha. So Steve, why don't you tell us about the round table discussions? What ones did you sit in on? How the how were they?

Steve Walus: Um, mine was like on leadership and something else. I don't know. Um, but you know, like those round tables go, we kind of stray off path, but, um, it was good.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Steve Walus: I sat with a couple of guys from, um, Adirondack snow removal and, and, and girl.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Okay. the Yep.

Steve Walus: Um, and then, um, someone else did a table on him, forgetting his name now. Anyway, it was a, it was a great conversation. You know, those little table chats, sometimes you kind of, Going to them kind of not expecting much, but you end up getting in a good conversation and it was definitely worth it. You know, that's kind of what I go to those events for.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Were there multiple round tables? Because we didn't get to them either.

Steve Walus: Yeah, so they had that whole, the the roller rank there full of tables and different topics on each one. And you were even able to kind of grab your own topic off the other table and bring it to a table if you didn't like what someone else was sitting on it.

Graeme Utter: so

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah okay. That's cool.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, I thought Gene said he like 150 or 60 people signed up for that. i don't know they all showed up or not, but there was he said there's a ton of people signed up more he thought was going to sign up for that.

Steve Walus: Yeah, there was a good amount of people in the room. So I got so involved the conversation before the end of it, I look back and half the people were gone. I'm like, oh, I guess we're staying here a little later than expected.

Steve Walus: But it was that good of a conversation. So we just kind of kept it going.

The SnowJobs Podcast: very cool very cool um and then we had so that that kind of wrapped up the daytime on friday and then we had the case welcome party friday night at salcone brewery there the uh the old train station location which is a phenomenal location it's really cool great outdoor space great indoor space just an old uh you know like 1920s style train station like you'd see in the movies that they turned into a bar and restaurant and then the outdoor patio area is huge and you know it was just really cool uh how did everybody like that let's go graham what were your experiences with the party everything good

Native Snow: Thank you.

Graeme Utter: It was great, yeah. Busy, and it was warm still, which was nice. um Yeah, pretty busy in there.

Graeme Utter: Beer's pretty good. And everybody, like a lot of people seem to migrate outside and just, you know, the conversation just kind of naturally flowed and, you know, you get caught talking to somebody for 20 minutes, half an hour, and, you know, not even know where the time goes, right?

Graeme Utter: So it was, yeah, it was really good. Food was good. They ran out steak when we got to the end of the line finally, and they didn't have any steak there. And there was about 10 of us waiting for the next batch to come out, kind of creeping into the kitchen, having a look, and they got mad at us and closed the door on us.

Graeme Utter: So anyway, brought the steak out.

RICK JAMES: the

Graeme Utter: And, um yeah, and then the the lady with the ice cream truck showed up and, That's some good ice cream. I'll tell you what. I've been on a diet and every pound I lost, I think I gained back by like noon on Friday.

Steve Walus: Yes, so before all this had started, I was on the fence to bring my son and I actually reached out to Jean was like hey you know I know we're doing it at a brewery is it alright if I bring my son is.

Steve Walus: You know I didn't know if it was a 21 and older thing he's like no in fact there's a bunch of kids his days going and. So shout out to Jean because they were really, really welcoming to be bringing my son, which was huge and then, when we went to the event, the staff there was awesome.

Steve Walus: And they actually got him a piece of cake for his birthday and brought it out with candles and everything. So, no you know, those small things when you got your kids involved, just those little small things really just take the cake, no pun intended.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And that is the cool thing about Starks is it's literally a family event. The whole thing, everything they plan is kid friendly. ah You can definitely bring your kids. There were kids. Jordan Smith had his kids there. I saw a couple other kids running around Starks and at that thing. So there's there's a lot of kids around. So that's really cool.

Steve Walus: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: like ah Look at Sean's head going. He's like, there was cake? I didn't get cake?

Native Snow: I did not get cake or birthday cake. It's not my birthday, but I would have still taken some.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh my gosh, that's funny.

Native Snow: right But no, you're right. It's very family oriented. And Gene actually gave me two onesies, one for my soon to be one year old daughter and one to be my soon to be born daughter.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Beautiful weather. As the sun went down, it just seemed like it got nicer and nicer. um Food was great. I didn't hear anybody complain about was it. Is it me or were there did it feel like there were a lot more people at that welcome dinner than last year?

The SnowJobs Podcast: It felt a lot more crowded. i don't know. Maybe it was just me.

Native Snow: No, it was, it was about the same.

Patty Salmon: I'm just about to say.

Native Snow: It was about the same, but I can tell you the food line never stopped. Like I was like, I'll wait a half an hour, let the line go.

RICK JAMES: No.

Native Snow: I got up there a half hour later. it's still mob. I'm like, I'll wait another half hour. Still the same exact line. I was like, this is just ridiculous.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I didn't eat till the last hour of it, and there was still five guys in front of me on the line.

Native Snow: There was still a lot. Yeah. There was still a line the entire time for the food. It was,

The SnowJobs Podcast: Maybe it was just maybe more people were inside last year because felt like the outdoor patio area was a lot more crowded this year than last year. But what was cool to see was you you saw like conversations among groups that constantly the group kept breaking up and migrating to other conversations.

The SnowJobs Podcast: like It was really cool to see everybody just, hey, how are you? I'm so-and-so. And boom, talk for 20, 25 minutes. And then you know another group, is it's that I mean, that's the atmosphere you want.

The SnowJobs Podcast: How was it Saturday morning? Yeah. That's incredible that they can they can still move through because there had to be a group. like there There had to be ah um a good mob of people there that early.

Patty Salmon: Yeah, but they just keep the line rolling. And that swag bag, man, I mean, it just gets bigger and bigger every year. I bring a carry on just for the amount of stuff you bring back from this event.

Patty Salmon: yeah, the amount of food there is crazy. Breakfast is good. They had a bunch of, uh, egg and cheese sandwiches, bagels. think they even had a free option, which just shows, goes to show you how, how much they cater to everybody that family does. So.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It's wild. Good. So what did they have? Bacon, egg, and cheese? Ham, egg, and cheese? That kind of stuff?

Patty Salmon: Yeah, bacon, egg, and cheese, sausage, egg, and cheese. It was on croissants, bagels, English muffins, water, coffee, anything you need.

Steve Walus: um i don't remember the name of it uh it was the one with kinetti um and who else was in that guy from emi and couple other guys but uh it was on like uh calming clients and and hiring something like that um it was a good one it was that's that's that's it um yeah that was really good actually um

Steve Walus: Kenetti had a ah great call them all service. It's a call them all tech stack group thing that I took away from that, that he uses to kind of let all his, however many staff he's got to do that the giant stadium.

Steve Walus: Um, and if it works for him, it's obviously going to be easy work for me. So, um, that was, that was cool. And then talked about AI and talked about some other things there. And it was a overall good conversation.

Patty Salmon: Yeah, it was good. ah The speakers were good. i can tell you what, that was frustrating. I mean, for the hour, hour, 15 minutes, whatever it was, they sat there, document, document, document, cover yourself, cover yourself.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And we're never going to use them.

Patty Salmon: But we're still going to settle.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, we're never going to use any of it.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But the only, like I've said on the show numerous times, the only thing they're going to use that documentation for is determining whether it's $20,000 or $200,000. Accident or negligence.

Patty Salmon: Yeah. I mean, it was it pretty frustrating to listen to, honestly.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, yeah, we're all fucked. Like, it's an hour and a half of them saying, yeah, basically, you're all fucked no matter what you do. If somebody wants to take a dive, going to take a dive.

Patty Salmon: Do everything right, but we're going to settle because it's cheaper.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I said, this is going to be really good because you had three guys on that panel that are they're unicorn psych guys. They do a lot of large industrial. They do government. They do a lot of stuff that requires them to be you know very official and have a lot of systems in place and all that stuff.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And and I just like, I'm keep it simple.

Patty Salmon: um

The SnowJobs Podcast: like I'm not quite a yellow legal pad like Todd Dickerson said you know last year's panel. I'm not quite there, but...

RICK JAMES: Mm-hmm.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I'm like, let's keep it simple as possible and make sure we're make, we're bringing in a lot more money than we're putting out. That's a win. So I think I was able to, to, I hope at least I was able to speak for the little guys, you know, the smaller guys in that room and and and get some so points across to them about how we do things.

The SnowJobs Podcast: What's worked for us.

Graeme Utter: Yeah, like me.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You tell, well I mean, you guys tell me, did, did we do a good job, the four of us or, or was it like wildly off base and then couldn't be understood?

Patty Salmon: No, it was good. They always, and in my opinion, Gene always does a good job of picking people for the panels that come from different, that that'll apply to everybody, right?

RICK JAMES: Yep. And

Patty Salmon: You get the big guys that I think, you know, Lee Zach said that they generally don't look at anything 10 acres and under, and then you get some some smaller guys.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like me, I'm the smaller guy.

Patty Salmon: like you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I was, this I was the representation of the small guys.

Patty Salmon: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: um thats be No, that's okay. Those guys, that's what they're set up to do. So so that's and and that's that's where they that's their wheelhouse.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, that's what they do. That's their wheelhouse.

Patty Salmon: Yeah, that's what works for them.

RICK JAMES: so So there are quite a few guys like that too.

Patty Salmon: That's what works for Steve.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like I said,

RICK JAMES: So it's mean it was a good match.

The SnowJobs Podcast: ah don't remember yeah I don't remember if I said it or not, but like I could do literally, I could do one of their sites or I could do everything else I do. I can't do both.

RICK JAMES: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: That's ah a decision I made a long time ago where I did not want to get i didn't want to scale anymore. I didn't want to bring it up anymore. so i So I like to stay on the smaller side and crush the local area and not travel. you know Just be doing what I do and do it well in ah in a tiny area.

The SnowJobs Podcast: so but yeah so i mean Anything you guys took away from that?

Graeme Utter: Well, for me, like, like I'm small, smaller than you, Steve. And like, I do things kind of the way you do. And I mean, the way we've had our sites, you know, we've had them for quite a while now. And we've kind of basically worked them up to where we need them to be at this point.

Graeme Utter: But as I plan to expand in the next, you know, five years, I need to kind of listen to those bigger guys and say, okay, what are we getting into here? What do I need to know?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Sure.

Graeme Utter: Because, you know, as far as I'm concerned, yeah, we're masters in our own domain right now, what we're doing, but if we want to take that next step, we can do it the same way we've been doing it.

Patty Salmon: Thank you.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You're going to scale. Yeah. So you're going to scale. So then there's the, you know, there's good information for you from, from Scott and, and Nick and, and, and Jack, you know, cause they, they're, they're doing well and they, they do a lot of things I don't do and don't have to do, which, you know, and frankly scare me.

The SnowJobs Podcast: you know Honestly, I don't want that kind of stress. I don't want the stress level that they have, which it's great. you know They want to do it. They're young enough to do I'm an old man. like I'm good i'm go where I'm at i did get I did get admonished for my church joke, but it wasn't a joke.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But I was told you shouldn't. Yeah, yeah, somebody, an older gentleman told me, you know, it it wasn't really, I loved what you had to say, but your church joke, you shouldn't make jokes about the church.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah. I know what they pay for their lawn and I know what they pay for their snow and I don't do their, their lawn, but I do their snow.

The SnowJobs Podcast: You know, they they do pay for premium work at these congregations. But anything else about that ah afternoon session there or before lunch session?

Steve Walus: Yeah, i I learned a little bit about just, you know, these guys are so big in their growth. And for me, I feel like the small guy in the room much just like you guys. But their growth is very strategic.

Steve Walus: And sometimes my growth is like, how many phone calls do I get in the fall? And like, how much work can I take on?

Patty Salmon: you

Steve Walus: And, you know, you're always kind of bidding work and taking on everything. And they seem like, no, we figure out way before the season starts, we're going to cap it at this. And we're only going to take on these sites.

Steve Walus: And even you, Steve. You know, you have a very particular set of sites you're going to take on and that's it. and and And that's something I got to work on myself as I, as I continue to grow as a say no to certain people.

Native Snow: Steve, I would say that they say that more than they mean it, because if the right site comes up, they're taking it, whether they got a stretch or not.

Steve Walus: ones

Native Snow: So.

Steve Walus: But at least, at least you have a general idea where you need to be at, you know, like you're, you're kind of going into the season going like, you know, obviously if something sweet and juicy comes, we're all going to try to,

The SnowJobs Podcast: I think money always talks. You know, money always has a say at the end of the day.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But, you know, I think like you said, I think they have what they are targeting, what their ideal is. But at the end of the day, you know, hey, maybe some contracts didn't come in and this thing came up that we weren't we wouldn't normally take, but we need to fill that void.

The SnowJobs Podcast: um He said that there are real challenges that don't always get talked about enough. Employee management is another big one. He says, I think there's a big opportunity to bring more focus there to small and mid-sized business growth for companies in that 50K to 500,000 range, or even those like himself that's pushing to that million-dollar mark.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So I think that was that's suitable for this, that that panel, you know, if maybe it was split half and half, where focus on a couple small guys and a couple unicorn guys, or have have a panel just for the the smaller you know the smaller guys focusing on the challenges that the small guys face.

The SnowJobs Podcast: that you know like The stuff that those guys were talking about, half of that stuff, I saw faces that they didn't quite even understand you know the issues at hand because they're massive.

The SnowJobs Podcast: like What Scott's done is amazing. His growth in the last couple of years has been insane. Nick, too. they're facing problems that most guys that will never face that, like myself,

RICK JAMES: Oh, yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I don't even that's that's a ballpark. I don't even step foot in, you know, with their their sized issues and their size, the you know, things to overcome.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So maybe having something dedicated like Josh is saying, they're having more focus on smaller and midsize companies would be beneficial. It's always great hearing from the, you know, the the Titans and stuff. But, you know, like he was saying, I had heard that a couple of times. So I wanted to get that in there.

Graeme Utter: Well, you know what? Like those big guys, I mean, they still started at the bottom too, right? So they know, they know what we're going through and the fact that, you know, guys like Scott Lee, Zach, are totally willing sit to sit down with you and,

They did a great job of answering and being open and honest. i mean not Not everybody always wants to be be that when you get up there, but everybody up there sure did. It was great.

Native Snow: The setup was great. It was three different stations, but we have we had um Mexican barbecue and pizza.

Native Snow: The pizza truck was like, what was that, an old Chevy like from the 50s?

The SnowJobs Podcast: Dude, I don't know, but how they set that up, it was insane.

RICK JAMES: That was cool. Yeah.

Native Snow: It was raining. Yeah. It was raining a coal fired brick oven, whatever it was, pizza truck. I wish I could have got outside to see the front of the truck because the truck was an older truck from the 50s or whatever, but it was nice.

The SnowJobs Podcast: But what was cool was it wasn't just a truck.

Native Snow: and Oh yeah, yeah, it was insane.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It it it transformed into a full pizza shop. Counters and everything, like, holy shit.

Graeme Utter: Yeah, they had beer food has been and everything.

Native Snow: Yeah, it was literally insane.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It was insane.

RICK JAMES: they cooked They cooked a full pig that morning, they told me, when we came in.

The SnowJobs Podcast: A pulled pork was sick.

Native Snow: Yeah, the pork was amazing.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I didn't have any of the mac and cheese, but I had the pulled. I was still being good at that point.

Native Snow: He was trying to be good, yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I knew the pretzels were going to do me in, but then I had to try a pizza truck. They looked too good, and I'm glad I did because that the but the sausage and broccoli Rob slice, oh, my good Lord.

Patty Salmon: I was just saying, and I don't think that we went back into their shop last year. Because the the first well the first year I went, which was their second year, they did sidewalk equipment back there.

Patty Salmon: It's just a pretty impressive setup.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, it is cool. Did you see all the bins on the wall with all the ah the labels and stuff?

The SnowJobs Podcast: The organization they have is incredible. They're parts organization.

Patty Salmon: Yeah, I was taking a couple pictures because we're putting that that new building we're putting up, so I took ah a couple pictures.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah, it was. i personally liked that idea of having those three trucks because there was there was still plenty of food. There was plenty of choices, but it gave the team from Storks the ability to not have to make another meal and kind of, you know, not have to scramble or put stuff out. You know, it was handled for them for the most part, which I thought was great because I did see some of them sitting, taking five minutes and having, you know, having a meal.

The SnowJobs Podcast: basically being able to relax for a couple minutes. And in years past, you never saw them rest at all.

RICK JAMES: Great.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Like they were on their feet scrambling the entire day. So it was, I thought that setup was good. It was nice to see them being able to kind of, you know, enjoy the day more a little bit. I thought, I thought they'd seem like they were enjoying the day.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, I did too.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So lunch was good. So ah the onto the equipment rodeo, which was new this year.

Graeme Utter: What?

RICK JAMES: Yes. That was cool.

RICK JAMES: it was I think it got everybody. mean, the weather didn't. They moved it up. They played with the weather and moved it up a little bit. so And I think, you know, it everybody enjoyed it. I saw a lot of guys out there.

RICK JAMES: let I mean, started to sprinkle little bit. And Gene brought some tents up, people stand under, it him and his team. But everybody's out there laughing and having a good time. Everybody, you know, just those it was fun. It was just banter back and forth like it's supposed to be. And everybody had a great time that I saw.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And then you had the backhoe picking up sports equipment off the tees and stuff, which was pretty cool. But, yeah, start with the remote control race course gone awry for Jeremy there.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, I definitely screwed that.

RICK JAMES: i was like, I told you, I told you, and I'm my god I'm not going to be good at this. And I definitely was not. I only took out one pull. Apparently somebody took out of like five. So I'll take that as a win.

Steve Walus: I thought it was great. i think it's cool that they had that little mezzanine because it obviously was raining and it was kind of miserable outside. So the fact that they kind of pulled the loaders in and took a look at things.

Steve Walus: I agree with him. i did top ground back blade was pretty cool. I've i've been talking to Rob about them. I've seen them before, but now he's got that tractor hitch on one. I got a 4075R. I've been trying to put something on the back up for some weight.

Steve Walus: So the fact that I could throw that on and then put it on my truck or kind of adapt it to whatever works for whatever event kind of leaning me that direction too.

Patty Salmon: So one thing I noticed on that panel, and then it also came up in the afternoon panel with the the contracts and numbers, is there was a lot of questions about getting paid. You think a lot of guys had problems with the decent winner that everybody had this this year across the the board?

The SnowJobs Podcast: I think if you had caps and you went over the cap, I think some customers, like, we doubled up.

Patty Salmon: Yeah.

The SnowJobs Podcast: So I think if you had a contract that that was capped at in the mid-50s and you got almost 80, some customers may not have been prepared for that because that may have been big bills.

Patty Salmon: Yeah, most of our contracts were 25 inches over.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Yeah.

Native Snow: Yeah, I think a lot of the smaller places were not equipped or ready for that either because I'm having some issues getting paid from some people.

The SnowJobs Podcast: I mean...

RICK JAMES: Mm-hmm.

Native Snow: I put them on some payment plans and stuff. They're still not paid, and but they're just small little places. They don't budget for it or whatever, but we got 50 inches of snow in their market and they got to pay.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Even if you did budget, if you got double what normal, you know, you look at your climatology and you budget for a 40-inch winner, you know, maybe you budget for 45 or 50 to be safe.

Patty Salmon: So

The SnowJobs Podcast: you If you double up, you your your budget's still fucking blown. You're still going to problem fucking finding the money to pay it. So going to have to work.

Native Snow: Yeah.

RICK JAMES: Yeah, but all that said, that panel and then the the other panels, like Pat said, they talked about it and it.

Graeme Utter: So, I think that's a question.

RICK JAMES: I think it gave a lot of guys a way to talk their way through it, you know, how to change some things for next year or whatever, you know.

RICK JAMES: I mean, that's what these panels did, you know, just kind of brainstorming. These guys had some good ideas, and they have some good procedures how they do it. So I think it kind of hopefully helps some guys out, at least.

The SnowJobs Podcast: It definitely did. I think it definitely did. Yeah, both the the the evening panel was great for that. They answered a lot of good questions.

RICK JAMES: lot of good employee stuff too, I thought, you know where they're talking about you know what to do for your employees or help them out.

RICK JAMES: Because Johnny always has some great great knowledge to pass on everybody. And I mean, everybody does. But john I just think ofs John because of how animated he is.

RICK JAMES: I think that's just who he is.

The SnowJobs Podcast: Oh, yeah. Well, he's all about taking care of his guys and his his family, you know, and and nobody, I mean, very few people do it better than Arctic in that regard.

Patty Salmon: Definitely the Case Construction Party. I think that that's always great. We talked about there's so many people flying in from all over the place for this event. It gives everybody something to do the night before when everybody's getting in and just the yeah good little icebreaker networking opportunities.

The SnowJobs Podcast: And that's a that's a piggyback off of Storm Day last last July where they had 18 states and Canada flying. represented there and you know i i think honestly gene is uh i think he's probably if he looks at it i think you have at least 15 16 states represented there and multiple provinces in canada so the fact that these these small regional events are becoming so popular and uh and a destination for snow guys just tells you the quality of these events that they're that they're bringing to the table and you know we love being able to help promote them and get people uh
