00:01:35
RICK JAMES
Uh, it was pretty touch and go what I heard. so I mean, it's, uh, we got her back under pat control when I rolled in. So, so yeah,

Event Highlights and Social Gatherings

00:01:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you came out, came out for Storks and then from Storks, you went where?
00:01:44
RICK JAMES
shit happens.
00:01:49
RICK JAMES
from Storks. Storks was a hell of a good time with the boys and it was just a great event like we talked about last week. I went from there. I went to Snoop. I think that's Snoop. Snap. I don't know.
00:02:00
RICK JAMES
It's an aircraft ah show up in Buffalo. So i was up there with them Top Dog inviting me up there to to go hang out with those guys and check out that different line of work, what those guys do and meet some people and
00:02:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, okay. What
00:02:14
RICK JAMES
I don't know, it was a good time. It was a lot of shit going on, different things. It wasn't the equipment year, so, you know, it kind of got a little long for Jeremy up there. No equipment to look at, so.
00:02:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
but do you mean it wasn't an equipment year?
00:02:25
RICK JAMES
Apparently, they do an equipment show every, think it taught, so it was every three years, and they had one last year, so this year was just a lot of schooling and meetings and talking, and, they I mean, they had a little trade show, but not not like they didn't have the equipment. They had a rodeo,
00:02:42
RICK JAMES
that top dog sponsored on uh wednesday where they had like big oshkosh with the blade you know go through and stuff like that yeah it was uh it was a good time i totally enjoyed it and then from there ah they didn't they didn't i mean i probably could have i just didn't i've never driven our oshkosh and don't know had quite a few people it was raining that day too but some some young guy from uh think colorado springs won it he's
00:02:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Do they allow you to compete?
00:03:08
RICK JAMES
I guess the the guy in Buffalo had won it like three years in a row. So this guy took him down finally. So so it was ah it was pretty cool.
00:03:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:03:16
RICK JAMES
I mean, I don't know. if I was thinking if I would, I would just collect all the cones, just go through it and just be an asshole, you know?
00:03:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah like the carts ah so they had a snow show with no equipment
00:03:24
RICK JAMES
Yeah. yeah So, well, it's been...
00:03:30
RICK JAMES
Yeah, i mean, they, you know, for the, like the airports, they got to get all these guys certified and stuff to, you know, to be on the airfield and stuff. that that I guess that's what i what I learned. So they go to all these classes and stuff like that.
00:03:42
RICK JAMES
They got to have some certifications and stuff. So, yeah, I mean, you just send it, don't you?
00:03:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
boring as fuck
00:03:49
RICK JAMES
use it I mean, we just, let's go.
00:03:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Yeah, I guess. I mean, I don't know.
00:03:52
RICK JAMES
I mean.
00:03:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
can't imagine going to any kind of snow show that doesn't have any equipment there. That's got to be super boring.
00:03:59
RICK JAMES
Yeah, was i mean yeah there and yup it it was, it was, it got long, even you know, but, I mean, it was cool to see different people, different, I mean, know, talk to different guys.
00:04:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. I bet. yeah but but
00:04:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
um bet
00:04:15
RICK JAMES
I mean, they had like booths and stuff where they had all like video showing so you could see some of the cool shit they have and stuff, you know, you don't usually see in our industry. So that was, that was neat.
00:04:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:04:26
RICK JAMES
You know, a lot of cool people.
00:04:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then from Buffalo, and then from Buffalo, where did you go?
00:04:30
RICK JAMES
ah Buffalo, we went over to Kyle. UD Maintenance had an end-of-year snow party. He's been inviting us for, what, the last three years to go to. And I was like, oh, on my way back. Might as well swing in. So Mr. Todd Dickerson, myself, and the โ€“
00:04:46
RICK JAMES
Patty Salmon, he was a late joiner. and from Matt McIntosh, CJ, from them from Clippers and Plowright came over. And Dan Zuber was there. We stopped ah Corey Lampierre and his operation.
00:04:58
RICK JAMES
wow it's pretty He's got a hell of an operation there. so
00:05:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, the Medina Triangle. He controls that area.
00:05:03
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah, he definitely, ah he's got a nice setup. I like his fleet. He's got, everything's uniform. Everything's nice and clean. and Yeah, he's got a hell an operation.
00:05:16
RICK JAMES
Then from there we did like two days of shop tours for UD maintenance. I mean, she's got shops everywhere. Dude, that Kyle's got himself a hell an operation there. is It's badass. it was a great great checking out all of his ah shops. And then we ended I guess the night before was Zuberman's birthday. So we all went out for supper for with Zuberman. So that was pretty fun.
00:05:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:05:44
RICK JAMES
And then, ah yeah, la was it Saturday, Friday? We went to Kyle's kyle's party, his end year snow party for the guys. And yeah he hass he's got a cool cool event where he's given of ah badges.
00:06:00
RICK JAMES
and I'm going to get this wrong I'll look at the picture. What the hell is it called?
00:06:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Bags for badges. Mm-hmm.
00:06:05
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you got it. me Yep. So every, think it's 45 cents on every bag of salt goes to this foundation and then ah helping four or five families, I think it was, with giving them money and stuff that had tragic event happened to them in the last year.
00:06:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Awesome.
00:06:20
RICK JAMES
so it was pretty cool.
00:06:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's very cool. Very, very cool. So did you fly from Buffalo to Ohio or...

Upcoming Breaks and Personal Events

00:06:27
RICK JAMES
Now we ended up, uh, no, we ended up driving, which was better because it was only like three hours and, Yeah, we got there way before we'd even take off from Buffalo. So it worked out better. So I canceled that flight and rebooked.
00:06:43
RICK JAMES
So it was Todd. Todd had his dates wrong on his flight. The guy that's flying at every airport daily mixed his days up or something. So we had to... ah We had the pivot, which worked out better, honestly. was It was an easy drive.
00:07:02
RICK JAMES
Got the BS and stuff, so it was fun. And then, ah yeah, that whole Kyle thing was great. Met some of his guys and are you he keeps his shit in tip-top shape, that's for sure.
00:07:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
good very cool very cool well the world tour east coast tour is over for you yeah

00:08:44

00:08:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's possible.
00:08:48
RICK JAMES
Maybe one of your buddies will put you out.
00:08:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's possible. Yeah, it's possible, man. i don't know. If I burst into flames walking into the church, just let me let me go. Let me go. But, yeah, I have a feeling the priest is going to hit me with one of...
00:08:59
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:09:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
I could, but I probably won't.
00:09:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
But...
00:09:12
RICK JAMES
Oh, boy.
00:09:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, so know it's been good, man. Then we got we got a couple weeks off here with no events. We got a hit, and then we got right into Syma in Schitts and Addy there.
00:09:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Get out there, the 23rd to the 26th.
00:09:25
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:09:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
But tonight we are talking to Mike Maglino, Maglino Landscaping and Excavating. ah They're out of East east Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. We've gotten to know Mike real well the last two years. He's been attending all of the same events we have, ah pretty much every single one, but his number had yet to come up on the list for an episode. But today is the day, and we're going to get to hear all about Maglino landscaping and excavating, finally, and get their approach to snow and how they do things.
00:09:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
But before we do that, as always, we're going to hear from Team Top Gun. We're going to come back and do a quick week in review.
00:10:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, guys,

Weekly Recap and Upcoming Activities

00:10:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
we're back. So the week in review really quick. What do we do? So Storm Chasing Season 2, Episode 2 dropped last night. That features Clintar of what, an Ottawa?
00:10:44
RICK JAMES
<unk> Yeah. We had a little watch party at the Kyle's event too.
00:10:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Ottawa.
00:10:52
RICK JAMES
Watched that event. So that was pretty fun.
00:10:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool. Very cool. Yeah. So Clint are dropped last night. That's episode two. So if you have not checked that out yet, definitely get over to YouTube, the storm chasing YouTube page and check that out.
00:11:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Give it a watch, watch the first two episodes of the season and yeah, just keep building the numbers. uh as we said sima 2026 is the next event up it's in schitts and addy this year it's gonna be running from june 23rd to june 26th so if you're going i don't think that thing ever sells out right like you can get tickets last second for that so it's not like one of these one days where you gotta you gotta buy tickets for storks because they're gonna sell out you won't be able to go um
00:11:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:11:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we got that in June, and then let's see, everybody's announcing their dates now. Everybody's taking the hint and getting a lot of traction and going forward. September 17th is a third, actually before that, Storm Field Day is in July. They moved it up a couple weeks this year. It's it's not in August anymore. So it's July 29th and 30th this year.
00:12:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
So get your, I think they become available May 4th. I think the tickets are out.
00:12:05
RICK JAMES
I'm not sure.
00:12:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think this week the tickets go out on sale for Storm Field Day. So ah check out Storm Socials, and we'll keep up updating you that. September 17th, it's a Thursday, is S&S Snow and Ice Solutions' sixth annual snow show.
00:12:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a great event out in the Scranton-Wilkes Bar area of Pennsylvania. um Last year was very good, very liquids-heavy.
00:12:29
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:12:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
it was uh it was extremely good though um yeah i mean good day good great food yeah great food stuffed mushrooms ah
00:12:37
RICK JAMES
It's going be a good event, yeah. think they're going be. Yeah.
00:12:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
can't yeah can't wait for tony and janet's event though they do a great job it's a good time
00:12:49
RICK JAMES
He just wants to stuff mushrooms.
00:12:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Tough mushrooms for all.
00:12:53
RICK JAMES
ah
00:12:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, they have quite the spread. But, yeah, it is it it last year was a very liquids very good liquids panel that had a lot of discussion, lot of participation from the audience. And I swear I still remember it could have gone on for another two hours. Like, there were just there was a lot of engagement. That was probably โ€“ if not the most engaging panel I've seen yet, it was definitely one of the top two or three that I've seen because the, the audience just kept asking questions and follow-up questions.
00:13:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it was really good. lot of great information. ah That was Sterling. That was Chris. And that was Anthony, Chris Colitis and Anthony.
00:13:30
RICK JAMES
I believe so, yeah.
00:13:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
And they did a phenomenal job with that liquids panel.
00:13:31
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:13:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
I would expect more liquids discussion from S&S this year. We have not gotten an itinerary for the day yet, but they are a very liquids-heavy dealer of selling VSI and Cameon. So I would say that it's probably going to be liquids-based again. So if you have ah any need for liquids knowledge, that is probably a great day for you to attend. And again, it's in the Scrand-Wilkes Bar area on Thursday, September seventeenth us to continue the liquids push i see a theme here for this year for for the
00:14:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I think there's a theme.
00:14:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think with the salt shortage, everybody's going to be going to liquids this this coming winter.
00:14:08
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:14:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
So everybody's going to be buying equipment and getting boned up on their their liquids knowledge. October 1st in Uxbridge, Massachusetts is the third annual Northeast De-Icing Solutions De-Icing Day.
00:14:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's Patty Salmon's company. um They do a great job. Last year was head and shoulders above the first year's event. And this year, I expect them, they built a whole new building just for the event.
00:14:37
RICK JAMES
Yeah, a new building. Yeah.
00:14:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
just a new arena just for the uh the day so uh it's pretty cool and uh yeah they they uh they way out did first year last year so we're looking forward to seeing you know how it goes this year i'm sure it's going to be even better than it was last year
00:14:53
RICK JAMES
I think patty's Patty's got some things up his sleeve for it he's been talking about.
00:14:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
usually does he usually does
00:14:57
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:15:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
But the new Snow Jobs patch hats are in. They're definitely awesome looking. If you were at Storks, you got to see them. um And also the new the new Snow Jobs Canada, you know, things that the that Canada does better than the U.S.
00:15:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
T-shirts. They are on the website.
00:15:17
RICK JAMES
Not much.
00:15:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're ah not much, but they are on the snowjobsnationstore.com site. If you are ordering them, I will tell you right now, order a size smaller than what you think you need.

The SnowJobs Podcast

00:15:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
The extra largest fit like two X and and so on and so on going down the list. So if you think you're a large, probably order a medium. Think you're a ah an extra large order a large.
00:15:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'll throw that out.
00:15:44
RICK JAMES

00:15:50
RICK JAMES

00:15:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're very good shirts, but they're just sized a little off. Like, I'm in an extra large right now, and it fits beautifully. And normally, I'm a 2X.
00:15:58
RICK JAMES
not, they're not Diori or Lulu, so I don't know.
00:15:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
They are not. No, they're sandpaper. is They're...
00:16:02
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:16:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, they're actually really soft. I like them a lot.
00:16:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:16:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're just, ah they're a heavier, definitely a a heavier shirt than what we usually have, but they're good. They're definitely good. ah Keep hitting Apple Podcasts and Spotify. The SnowJobs Podcast
One guy wanted us to do a panel show about the you know how guys, what they do to it retain employees, any kind of programs or bonuses, stuff like that. ah Get a bunch of different guys' take on that. um another guy asked for like the art of being in the meeting the sales meeting with the actual decision makers and how are you bringing it home type thing so we'll try and uh we'll try and get to all these things in the next uh you know six to eight weeks we'll we'll get them on the schedule and get people in there that uh that we know do that well so we can keep bringing you guys what you want anything else all right cool so let's hear from our partners and we'll come right back and we'll hear him from mike

RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think โ€“ well, yeah. was talking to those guys about the air airport show. Some of those guys call our Springs. I think they said they put on โ€“ they were put on alert or something last week or end the last week for something.

00:21:07
RICK JAMES
Nah. I
00:21:11
Mike Meglino
Yeah, we did pretty good. that i mean, everybody says it was bad, but I feel like it was just an average winner from when we were younger. Like, it just brought back winner from 10, 15 years ago.
00:21:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, the younger guys say it was bad because they they were pretty much in grade school when the last time we had a real winner.
00:21:25
RICK JAMES
haven't had one.
00:21:29
Mike Meglino
I can't be classified with the older guys anymore. Jesus, I'm not that old.
00:21:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah os Jeremy, take us away, bud.
00:21:36
RICK JAMES
Hey, all right, Mike, let's ah tell everybody about your company, where you guys got started and what you're all about.

Maglino's Services Overview

00:21:42
Mike Meglino
all right so um i started the company back in june 2010 um kind of get tired of working for other people and i actually stepped away from landscaping and stormable all that for a little while and tried some other stuff and just kept falling back on it and decided it was time to go out on my own and here we are now 16 years later and still still kicking somehow
00:22:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool.
00:22:09
RICK JAMES
Nice.
00:22:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what what does Maglino do? Like, what kind of services? What are you offering?
00:22:14
Mike Meglino
So pretty much anything outside related at this point. I have landscape maintenance crews just for routine lawn care and all that as much as I despise it anymore.
00:22:26
Mike Meglino
um We have design build, outdoor living areas, patios.
00:22:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen to that.
00:22:32
Mike Meglino
retaining walls, all that good stuff. um Full excavation crew for new construction house lots, septics, and pretty much everything else. And then in the wintertime, commercial snow.
00:22:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
You do nice hardscaping I've seen a bunch of the stuff you've posted You do really nice hardscaping
00:22:47
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:22:50
Mike Meglino
Thank you.
00:22:52
RICK JAMES
but's Is that your bread and butter? hardscaping?
00:22:54
Mike Meglino
It's probably a good chunk of it. The excavation does pretty well itself. And unfortunately with everything else, we have to keep the maintenance around.
00:22:59
RICK JAMES
Okay. Okay.
00:23:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep ah Yeah, that's It is, it really is like Do you think you'd lose business?
00:23:04
Mike Meglino
as much as a headache that is.
00:23:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Do you think you'd lose a lot of the hardscaping and excavation If you did not cut lawns anymore?
00:23:15
Mike Meglino
I don't think it has much to do with that side of it. I think it's more of the year round stuff.
00:23:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:23:21
Mike Meglino
I feel like we have to supply it and at this point to keep the snow as much as you hope not, but everybody wants that one contractor that does it all.
00:23:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, that's all legit. Yeah, that's legit.
00:23:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah. What are you do? Do you do a lot of green?
00:23:37
Mike Meglino
We do a good bit of green. I mean, on the residential side, we probably have about 160 lawns we maintain. And then that doesn't include the all commercial accounts.
00:23:44
RICK JAMES
Jesus Christ.
00:23:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
bite me holy shit
00:23:50
RICK JAMES
Jesus, Mike, I didn't know you did that much.
00:23:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:23:52
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:23:53
RICK JAMES
You never show any of that stuff on your social, Mike.
00:23:56
Mike Meglino
It's been a while since I've had to ride a lawnmower.
00:23:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
nobody wants to see that who wants to see riding lawnmowers around nobody wants to see that kind of stuff because they want to get through those goddamn lawns as quick as possible ah
00:23:58
Mike Meglino
yeah
00:23:58
RICK JAMES
ah
00:24:03
Mike Meglino
I tell the guys to take pictures all the time and I'll post it, but nobody ever sends me pictures. so
00:24:11
Mike Meglino
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:13
RICK JAMES
I just saw your latest. ah We'll stick with this for a minute, but I just saw your latest reel. That was pretty cool. That patio and that metal that was really neat.
00:24:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
yep what's the other area there that the did not have any there was like an uh a flat area with no pavers or anything what's that area gonna be that's what they're doing they spent all that money and they're going above ground pool holy oh did you okay
00:24:21
Mike Meglino
Yeah. That view on that one's insane.
00:24:24
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:32
Mike Meglino
They are putting an above ground pool on that area.
00:24:35
RICK JAMES
Oh.
00:24:36
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:24:38
Mike Meglino
Yeah. Oh, we actually hit ledge rock on that.
00:24:40
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:24:41
Mike Meglino
Yeah. They were, they were talking in ground pool, but that was a late add on that one. Got added onto the job. Like towards the end, we were wrapping up everything else and like, what if we do this over here? And I'm like, you guys are killing me.
00:24:54
Mike Meglino
So
00:24:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
bring in the dynamite bring in the dynamite oh my god really an airbnb holy crap yeah how far away from storks is that place no
00:24:54
RICK JAMES
took all their money. They couldn't go in ground.
00:24:57
Mike Meglino
yeah, all that for an Airbnb.
00:25:03
RICK JAMES
Oh, really?
00:25:03
Mike Meglino
Yep, an Airbnb.
00:25:05
RICK JAMES
Wow, let's let's stay there, Steve.
00:25:10
Mike Meglino
Not too bad.
00:25:12
RICK JAMES
How many guys we get in that sauna?
00:25:14
Mike Meglino
yeah
00:25:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah oh man yes you do you really do great hardscaping mike would you say you do better hardscaping than anthony uh
00:25:23
Mike Meglino
order
00:25:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:25:24
RICK JAMES
Uh-oh.
00:25:25
Mike Meglino
We're going to turn this into that?
00:25:26
RICK JAMES
Uh-oh.
00:25:26
Mike Meglino
Oh, yeah.
00:25:27
RICK JAMES
a
00:25:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah that I'm going to start giving each guy one line one landmine fucking question.
00:25:29
Mike Meglino
oh
00:25:30
RICK JAMES
ah
00:25:34
Mike Meglino
ye Thank God he doesn't listen to the show.
00:25:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah ah ah That's great.
00:25:34
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:25:37
RICK JAMES
ah Yeah. That was great.
00:25:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Very well sidestepped. I love it. but
00:25:45
RICK JAMES
Let's see.
00:25:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man.
00:25:46
RICK JAMES
It's political.
00:25:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
So let's talk about your snow. What what is the East Stroudsburg, your area like for snow? And, you know, how much annual snow do you guys average and stuff like that?
00:25:57
Mike Meglino
Um, I mean, back when I started, I'd say we were in a low 50 area. Um, now with a few, well, a bunch of low snow winters, we're down in that 39 to 46 inch range.
00:26:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:26:10
Mike Meglino
Um, we do have some higher elevation stuff where we still are in that 50 inch market, but for the most part, we're, we're mid low to mid forties.
00:26:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
How big an area do you guys cover? Like square mileage?
00:26:24
Mike Meglino
Uh, probably only about 10, 12 square miles.
00:26:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:26:27
Mike Meglino
Yeah, it's about, if I had to run from one side to the other, it's only about a 30 minute drive into snow, so.
00:26:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Keep it tight.
00:26:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
and Okay. Nice. Not too crazy.
00:26:38
Mike Meglino
No, try not to spread out too much because, you know, trying to put out fires from that far away becomes impossible.
00:26:38
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:26:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
00:26:45
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:26:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
00:26:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
What else you got, Jay?
00:26:50
RICK JAMES
So what, so what you mainly doing, Mike, for you and just commercial residential, what do you, everything?
00:26:53
Mike Meglino
and now Yeah, ah no residential snow anymore. I shouldn't say that. We do one or two driveways for people that have been there forever, but it's one of those ones where we don't have to be there for a day or two after the storm, and they're in no rush to get out if it's that bad.
00:27:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
00:27:12
Mike Meglino
That's the only reason we still do them. And then, of course, you get a couple friends and whatnot to help out every now and then. But no.
00:27:20
RICK JAMES
So youre commercial you're strictly commercial for the most part?
00:27:22
Mike Meglino
Yeah, strictly commercial. Yeah, we don't take in any residential snow. Got away from that probably four or five years ago because I get tired of having the trucks go to the body shops every spring.
00:27:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man. Yeah. oh man yeah
00:27:36
RICK JAMES
What size lots are you doing roughly? What's your red butter?

Transition to Commercial Snow Management

00:27:41
Mike Meglino
we're Our bread and butter is probably, if I had to look up here, about two to four acres on average size.
00:27:49
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:27:49
Mike Meglino
We have some bigger
00:27:56
Mike Meglino
Total square footage, we're probably about 4.2 million over 30, 31 sites.
00:27:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:28:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:28:03
RICK JAMES
Thanks.
00:28:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool. What's the future? you sticking with the model that that you've gotten to this point with, or you looking to get into other things?
00:28:13
Mike Meglino
No, I'm going to stick with pretty much what we're at. We got this stuff pretty aced.
00:28:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good man.
00:28:17
Mike Meglino
We do a good bit of HOA work and found, I mean, it's still somewhat of niche, but like my little zone here, we don't have any industrial.
00:28:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:28:29
Mike Meglino
I'd have to travel for it. So I don't plan on traveling to do snow because I'd rather keep it tight.
00:28:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:28:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
00:28:35
RICK JAMES
Yep. Do what you're good at.
00:28:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool.
00:28:37
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:28:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
at The HOAs pay, man.
00:28:38
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:28:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you do it well, they pay.
00:28:42
Mike Meglino
Yeah, that and small boxes. We keep a good chunk of per push on them and whatnot. And they're all pretty tight, so I can't complain there.
00:28:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool. think it's time for the Jeremy Lindstrom Dines leasing equipment segment here.
00:28:58
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you bet. All right, Mikey. You know me. I like my equipment. We talk quite a bit.

Equipment and Maintenance Discussion

00:29:02
RICK JAMES
So um let's hear let's hear your equipment lineup, what you got, what you're using, salters, sidewalks, push boxes, everything.
00:29:02
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:29:10
Mike Meglino
so right now we're running about six trucks. I got five Fords and then a GMC we brought back last year. Uh, found a good deal on one and kind of ran with that. Um, all Western plows, MVP threes and whiteouts, uh, pickups all run V plows, dump trucks all have whiteouts on them.
00:29:35
Mike Meglino
um salters all western tornadoes and then i got an under tailgate buyers one of the electric ones and we still have on the rack in the back an old airflow with a gas motor on it it's like an emergency backup so
00:29:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:29:45
RICK JAMES
Wow.
00:29:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. Yeah. Yep. How's the, uh, how's the under bumper, the, the salt dog work.
00:30:00
Mike Meglino
um it's 12 years old and still kicking strong. So, uh, the gearbox in at once two motors in it, just from salt corrosion, getting down in there.
00:30:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:30:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:30:13
Mike Meglino
Um, spinner motors every couple of years, nothing crazy.
00:30:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's going to happen. 100%, 100%.
00:30:16
Mike Meglino
Cause it's drops the salt right on the spinner motor. So kind of inevitable, no matter how good you clean it and desalt it in the spring, it seizes up over summer at some point.
00:30:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:30:28
Mike Meglino
Um, I mean, it takes a beating and, that runs in most of our HOAs so we could put four or five toners on a truck and try and get through a good chunk of roadway for it.
00:30:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Would you say the truck, like I'm not, nobody around here really runs those. Would you say the truck takes more of a beating from one of those rather than like a tornado being in the back of it?
00:30:49
Mike Meglino
yeah I mean, yes and no.
00:30:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:30:52
Mike Meglino
I mean, because you can clean the bed out completely.
00:30:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh-huh.
00:30:55
Mike Meglino
So one like it's got a hatch underneath it where you could dump it out, clean the auger out good. We could red power wash the entire bed out of the truck versus having a little bit of stuff still get stuck under this altar from the drag chains.
00:31:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
I got you. Yep.
00:31:08
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:31:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool. You ever, that's, you got to lift the bed up though, to get the salt down to the tailgate, right?
00:31:14
Mike Meglino
Yeah, and then
00:31:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Anybody ever hit the, anybody ever hit a branch or anything?
00:31:15
RICK JAMES
and know where you're going.
00:31:19
Mike Meglino
Uh, no tree branches. Everything's pretty sun stripped back. Uh, all the roadways are pretty clear.
00:31:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:31:23
Mike Meglino
Thank God. yeah, well,
00:31:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, if I went to that first storm out, I could buy a brand new truck with that set up first storm out. I guarantee somebody we've taken out something.
00:31:33
RICK JAMES
couple of addings.
00:31:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, something. Somebody. Somebody.
00:31:36
Mike Meglino
the only, the only, I mean, it's an electric truck, so it's not like it's on a central hydraulic truck. So you got to kind of stop and raise the body up slow and let it slide back, bring it back down.
00:31:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha.
00:31:47
Mike Meglino
Yeah, it's not one of those it's not like the state truck where you could dump and run it 20 mile an hour.
00:31:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right.
00:31:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I got you. All right.
00:31:57
Mike Meglino
i mean it's So this past year, yeah, all Western plows and spreaders, a couple decent dealers around.
00:32:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you're pretty much all Western then on the plows and the spreaders.
00:32:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Tornadoes have been good.
00:32:08
Mike Meglino
Yeah, like all the Tornadoes are pre-Fleaflex.
00:32:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:32:10
Mike Meglino
Like, they're old. They're second gen, I guess, would be. They're not the conveyor belt, but they're a first gen chain.
00:32:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:32:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm.
00:32:16
Mike Meglino
And, i mean, as far as we drag chains here and there just from wearing out from running material through them.
00:32:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:32:24
Mike Meglino
But other than that, I have no complaints.
00:32:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they've been good.
00:32:27
Mike Meglino
Everything's interchangeable.
00:32:34
Mike Meglino
Been pretty lucky on
00:32:34
RICK JAMES
What do you do to clean those up after the seasonal, your drake chain and stuff?
00:32:38
Mike Meglino
Um, so hopefully the EPA is not listening, but we have a concoction of diesel fuel and motor oil. We spray the chains down with after we hit them with some salt away and it seems to work out pretty good.
00:32:48
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:32:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:32:53
Mike Meglino
They still pop and bang in the fall when you fire them up like any drag chain, but we've been pretty lucky.
00:32:54
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:32:59
Mike Meglino
They're usually about four years out of a drag chain before we got to replace it.
00:33:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool
00:33:05
RICK JAMES
Nice.
00:33:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's pretty good what else uh what else are you running besides the trucks
00:33:09
Mike Meglino
Chris besides the trucks, we got couple Kubota r540 wheel loaders they're like to think there was 65 horse range.
00:33:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
okay yep
00:33:19
Mike Meglino
Chris Wacker, We got those paired with Arctic sectionals I have a cat 906 with. Chris Wacker, I guess the voodoo plow now.
00:33:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
the food nice all right okay
00:33:31
RICK JAMES
Oh, the blue.
00:33:31
Mike Meglino
Yeah. Yeah. It's got the 813 Metal Plus on it. Then I got Kubota skids. One of them is running Arctic sectional box. The other one is running an old rubber edge pusher.
00:33:47
Mike Meglino
So we still have...
00:33:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
so you like you you like the kabodas awesome very good um who's your dealer okay they do they do good
00:33:51
Mike Meglino
Yeah, Kubota's been great for us. Yep. I mean... Marshall Machinery. They got... Yeah, do good by us.
00:34:01
Mike Meglino
I mean, granted, the machine's very, I've really had no not nothing wrong with it.
00:34:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
good
00:34:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nothing wrong with them Nothing goes wrong Kubotas are tight man they They're definitely tight
00:34:12
Mike Meglino
No. Yeah, one of the oldest kids had like 3,500 hours haunted salt and, yeah, salt pile every winter and dirt all summer long.
00:34:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Still going That's nice And they're a bigger cab right They're a bigger cab than Kubota skids Yeah
00:34:21
Mike Meglino
Still going strong. Yeah, looks a little rough.
00:34:24
RICK JAMES
Any snow tires?
00:34:27
Mike Meglino
Yes. Yeah. Real roomy cab, um, compared to like a Takiuchi or something. If you guys are run those plenty of room, the overhead door, the guys love them for the hardscape side. They can go in and out with pallets halfway up and all that.
00:34:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:34:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, the Takis are like getting into a lunchbox. like There's no no space to be had.
00:34:44
Mike Meglino
yeah
00:34:48
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:34:49
RICK JAMES
You run any snow tires on your loaders?
00:34:50
Mike Meglino
Um,
00:34:52
Mike Meglino
No, no snow tires on the loaders yet. I figured if we wear out the regular tires, because they don't do much in the summer besides some yard loading, then we'll try out the snow tire game.
00:35:00
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:35:01
Mike Meglino
But you guys keep saying if I go to snow tires, I got guys fist fighting over loaders.
00:35:03
RICK JAMES
Nice.
00:35:06
Mike Meglino
So yeah,
00:35:07
RICK JAMES
Yep. So that's how it works here.
00:35:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
True.
00:35:12
Mike Meglino
yeah and then we got a cat skid steer yet with an Arctic box on it. And then i put together a tool cat last year with a musk ox on it.
00:35:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:35:23
Mike Meglino
Yeah. A little bit.
00:35:23
RICK JAMES
how do you like that?
00:35:27
Mike Meglino
I got to play in it. i like it. it Definitely impressive.
00:35:30
RICK JAMES
For HOAs, I assume.
00:35:31
Mike Meglino
Yeah. All the HOA driveways, townhomes.
00:35:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
I should have done that.
00:35:35
Mike Meglino
and then
00:35:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's what I really for the ground speed moving between courts. That's what I should have done is put the muskox on a tool. But you know what? They weren't doing that. Well, I've had the muskox like five years now.
00:35:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
they They the tool cat thing wasn't a it wasn't a thing when I first had to get them. But that's that's a sick for as far as efficiency and stuff. That's that's got to be much quicker than a skid.
00:36:01
Mike Meglino
Yeah, yep and we rode it right from the shop, just like world just yeah just like a loader.
00:36:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:36:07
Mike Meglino
So he's got about probably a two-mile run to where he where spends the storm, so it works out pretty good.
00:36:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
and what's the ground speed on that cat uh tool cat no that's not bad so i mean basically you're a little slower than a compact loader going down the road oh
00:36:15
Mike Meglino
um
00:36:16
RICK JAMES
They're not that fast. I think they're, yeah, 18 or 20.
00:36:18
Mike Meglino
Yeah, it's 18, I think.
00:36:18
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah. Well.
00:36:25
Mike Meglino
Yeah, it's it's fine that i well that's the downside of Kubota loaders. Their only top speed is about 16. Yeah, yeah. Those are pretty site-specific. We don't really take those anywhere unless it's pretty close.
00:36:37
Mike Meglino
um
00:36:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha.
00:36:38
Mike Meglino
We did rent a Hitachi this year.
00:36:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:36:40
Mike Meglino
That was actually impressive with the ground speed. I think it was like 25 mile an hour.
00:36:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yeah. They're du they're fast. they
00:36:46
Mike Meglino
Yeah, it was almost too fast. Like, it's kind of sketchy going down the road in a compact. It was 25. Yeah.
00:36:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
How was the, ah since you brought it up, how was the Hitachi? What, like overall, what, what did you think of it?
00:36:59
Mike Meglino
um i only got to play it a little bit the guy that ran it all winter loved it it said being a small frame loader but it kind of sat up high like a bigger frame and he said visibility was great we were in a 10.5 on it all winter long at one of our schools and it was just yeah yep
00:37:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:37:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. Nice.
00:37:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
nice
00:37:20
RICK JAMES
I never, never been in one of those tours at Kyle's place and he's, he had like, he had a few of them sitting around, so I crawled in one of them. Yeah. seemed like a good, good loader, simple, simple loader, no, no thrills, but it just, he said they have nothing but good luck with those things out there. So.
00:37:36
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:37:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, and they have Ohio's got that dealer.
00:37:37
Mike Meglino
im
00:37:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
They got that dealer that was doing the crazy cool the crazy good leasing on them in leasing terms. Was it Rico? Was that it? I can't remember. who we rico Yeah, Rico Equipment or Rico.
00:37:49
RICK JAMES
i heard I thought I heard that name. I thought I heard something about that.
00:37:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
song I think it was Rico. Don't quote me.
00:37:54
RICK JAMES
Rego, Rico, I don't know
00:37:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's been... Yeah, it's been a year or two, but they were doing ridiculous. Guys were telling me their their lease rates. I'm like, why the hell would you go with anything else if those are what the snow lease prices are on those?
00:38:07
Mike Meglino
Yeah, I mean, i took the Hitachi because it was the best rate I could find.
00:38:07
RICK JAMES
know. Mm-hmm.
00:38:13
Mike Meglino
Kind of late.
00:38:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:38:14
Mike Meglino
Like, we were playing a game and trying to trying to find something and waiting on sites to sign contracts and all that and seeing if there was anything new coming in. and
00:38:23
RICK JAMES
No, you don't do that.
00:38:24
Mike Meglino
Yeah, no then yeah not not early November.
00:38:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:38:27
RICK JAMES
No, that doesn't happen.
00:38:29
Mike Meglino
Oh, it's going to snow next week?
00:38:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah that was That was before.
00:38:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:38:33
Mike Meglino
Yeah, yeah maybe maybe this year.
00:38:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah Since you brought that up, Mike, not to get off track with the equipment, but since you brought it up, and we'll flow right into it. are you Are you getting calls now after this kind of winter? Are you getting earlier calls than you normally would or no?
00:38:46
Mike Meglino
Um, everybody I've, I've heard from everybody we already have just confirming we're not going anywhere.
00:38:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha.
00:38:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha.
00:38:54
Mike Meglino
Um, other than that, nothing new. I mean, the typical thing to management companies are playing a game early. Um, I'm sure everybody's heard the Walmarts are coming out like it's going out of style.
00:39:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, oh, well, there were failures upon failures.
00:39:08
Mike Meglino
Everybody's hearing from 17 different management companies about the same Walmart.
00:39:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:39:13
Mike Meglino
Um,
00:39:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, if I'm not mistaken, Walmart took back a bunch of stores and and are is going direct with them again.
00:39:21
Mike Meglino
Really?
00:39:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
uh because they were such bad failures i heard that last week i gotta confirm i gotta confirm if that's actually true but yeah they said they took back a bunch of stores that were i guess problem areas that you know the management companies couldn't get it done and they were horrific failures on um
00:39:38
RICK JAMES
Management companies, is that what happened?
00:39:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
shocking right yeah shocking that that brokers would not be able to get it done for
00:39:42
RICK JAMES
Jock Hanging, yeah. We went to the lowest bidder and they didn't do the right job.
00:39:45
Mike Meglino
never heard that before.
00:39:49
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:39:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, yeah, eight acres, extremely high liability ah site. Why in a 55-inch market? Why couldn't you get that done, you know, in a positive way for $17,000? I don't know.
00:40:04
Mike Meglino
I mean, our our local one only had one 321 and one 550 here all winter.
00:40:04
RICK JAMES
Sounds like
00:40:08
Mike Meglino
So, and that's an 11 acre Walmart.
00:40:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah yeah ya oh my gosh yeah
00:40:12
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:40:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah it's just yeah i mean that was that was the question because like i've been talking to a lot of guys and they're like yeah everybody so your customers that you currently possess they all reached out already to make sure you ain't going anywhere and is that common did that happen in the years past this early yeah yeah so that's good man that's good
00:40:31
Mike Meglino
A couple of them, but not not across the board. Yeah.
00:40:36
RICK JAMES
That's going to make you feel good going into next year.
00:40:38
Mike Meglino
Yeah. I guess we did something right.
00:40:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah i mean you're getting those calls yeah we just want to make sure we got you for next year that's yeah that's a good thing normally those calls don't come till september what do you mean
00:40:42
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:40:53
Mike Meglino
Yeah. I mean, everything we have, we've had I mean, only one or two sites are new within the last probably two years. Other than that, everything's been, you're talking six, eight plus years.
00:41:02
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:41:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool cool
00:41:05
Mike Meglino
As said, we kind of grow slow, only add one or two a year. Do we know we can do it? It's in our area.
00:41:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen. Love it.
00:41:14
Mike Meglino
I really don't like to spread thin because, you know, labor.
00:41:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
I hear you.
00:41:17
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:41:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
100%. That's exactly my philosophy. What else you got as far as equipment? I cut you off there to get on that side street.
00:41:28
Mike Meglino
That's a about it for equipment.
00:41:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Run any sidewalk machines or no?
00:41:32
Mike Meglino
No, no sidewalk machines. 75% of what we do, either the cars are able to park right up to the sidewalk, so you get the front bumpers there.
00:41:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:41:41
Mike Meglino
And our typical East Coast sidewalks only three foot wide to begin with. So you put a car bumper over it and we only got about 16 inch sidewalk.
00:41:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:41:49
Mike Meglino
So even a snowplow shovel doesn't fit half the time.
00:41:53
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:41:54
Mike Meglino
And then the other sites are stairs.
00:41:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well.
00:41:57
Mike Meglino
Yeah, everything's on a hill, so we got a flight of like six stairs here and four stairs here, and I could see it now if I had a sidewalk machine, the guys would be launching down the stairs trying to get the job done.
00:41:57
RICK JAMES
ah
00:42:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:42:10
RICK JAMES
what's What's this hill stuff you guys talk about?
00:42:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man.
00:42:15
Mike Meglino
Yeah. little bit higher than a bridge.
00:42:18
RICK JAMES
Ah, gotcha.
00:42:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha.
00:42:19
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:42:20
RICK JAMES
that's
00:42:21
Mike Meglino
When you got it.
00:42:21
RICK JAMES
So what do you, are you, you sound like you like the arctics? You had a lot arctics, the it sounded?
00:42:26
Mike Meglino
um yeah we got four of them right now like said we got the one metal plus which i've said it i um i got yeah i'd take the arctic i got minimal time on it but i just like the ease of operator
00:42:33
RICK JAMES
Which one, which one do you prefer? If you were to pick, if you had to pick, which which one would you pick?
00:42:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Jesus. Oh, yeah, yeah. Here we go.
00:42:49
Mike Meglino
Like, I spend most of my time, unfortunately, in a loader with a wing plow just because where I am and I can't find somebody to run it as a efficient as I can.
00:42:59
Mike Meglino
I guess I feel like I've tried a couple different things and I'm just like, what are you doing?
00:43:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, no, it's a real thing.
00:43:03
Mike Meglino
You're not using it right. They're running it as a full scoop and all that.
00:43:05
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:43:08
Mike Meglino
But yeah, if I got to fix the hydraulic leak or something.
00:43:08
RICK JAMES
And you're handy. You're handy. So you're you need to fix a lot of stuff on it. So...
00:43:13
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:43:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Jesus. Oh, my God.
00:43:17
RICK JAMES
See how I just walk around into that?
00:43:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it is
00:43:19
RICK JAMES
just walk em around.
00:43:20
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:43:20
RICK JAMES
into it
00:43:23
Mike Meglino
nothing
00:43:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
but
00:43:29
RICK JAMES
I've never listened to that.
00:43:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:43:32
Mike Meglino
Well, I know talking to Jeremy, I'm going to jinx myself here, but knock on wood, I've had no hydraulic problems with the thing.
00:43:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:43:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
See, there you go.
00:43:38
Mike Meglino
Oh, now it's probably just sprung a leak in the parking lot sitting here.
00:43:38
RICK JAMES
See?
00:43:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
hydraulic problems.
00:43:38
RICK JAMES
ah yeah I doubt it.
00:43:41
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:43:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
you have You have that one.
00:43:45
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:43:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
00:43:47
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:43:48
Mike Meglino
Either that or it's just too dirty, I can't tell.
00:43:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's cool
00:43:51
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:43:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's cool.
00:43:53
RICK JAMES
That happens.
00:43:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
So the Hitachi was good for you.
00:43:56
Mike Meglino
Yeah, Hitachi was good.
00:43:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
what what model was it mike oh you said a little the compact okay is that smaller than a 906 or like same size kind of same same same neighborhood gotcha okay
00:43:59
Mike Meglino
ZW80.
00:44:02
Mike Meglino
yeah Yeah, everything's compact. um
00:44:10
Mike Meglino
It's probably same size, 906 to 540. Yeah, one-yard bucket machine.
00:44:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that's cool.
00:44:17
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:44:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, glad that worked out. Because that's, I mean, i the prices for the Hitachis are good. I mean, I think the the cabs are are kind of no frills cabs, right? or or they're
00:44:28
Mike Meglino
Yeah, bare bones, flex tube, run into the heat vents.
00:44:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:44:31
Mike Meglino
It does have digital heater and digital radio.
00:44:31
RICK JAMES
No.
00:44:33
Mike Meglino
It had Bluetooth, so the guy was happy.
00:44:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. That's all you need.
00:44:36
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:44:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Pushing snow.
00:44:37
Mike Meglino
oh
00:44:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good defroster and stuff.
00:44:38
Mike Meglino
Yeah, climate control.
00:44:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
no No problems with the windshields fogging up or shit.
00:44:43
Mike Meglino
He didn't complain at all about it.
00:44:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
all right good then there you go so good for hitachi uh sweet what are you guys doing uh de-icing what are you doing uh granular liquids what are you guys doing okay
00:44:46
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:44:49
Mike Meglino
Yeah, give him that. up
00:44:57
Mike Meglino
So we're doing probably 95% granular with the tool cat this year. We did pick up one of those little sidewalks layer units for the back of it, the UTV unit um for pretty much pre-treating the HOA walkways and driveways.
00:45:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
okay
00:45:07
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:45:14
Mike Meglino
And then depending on the storm, we dabble with post-treating, but 110.
00:45:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
what gallon size is that sidewalk slayer and i don't think they offer that anymore right they went down to like 60 or 65 or something i think this year i think they chopped that down where last year's sidewalk slayers are were 100 gallons or so and this year they're cutting it almost in half or some shit
00:45:22
Mike Meglino
hundred and ten
00:45:29
Mike Meglino
uh it's a possibility i don't know
00:45:42
Mike Meglino
oh uh i mean a buddy of mine made it this year he bought a one brine buddies found it on marketplace and we kind of pieced it back together and
00:45:42
RICK JAMES
Were you making your own brine? were you?
00:45:55
RICK JAMES
How'd it work for you? Did you like the brine? Is this your first year dabbling in it?
00:45:59
Mike Meglino
It's the first year dabbling in it. I guess we picked a good winner for it at least.
00:46:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:46:03
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:46:04
Mike Meglino
But it wasn't bad. Decent learning curve, trying to get it through the guys' heads about how much to put down and all that. I was talking Patty about it at Storks, trying to figure it all out a little more and try and come up with a little more of a training program, I guess, for it.
00:46:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
eat
00:46:14
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:46:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did you use an additive just straight, Brian?
00:46:22
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:46:23
Mike Meglino
straight brine. um
00:46:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:46:25
Mike Meglino
When it was getting bitter cold, we were still running granular with it just to be safe.
00:46:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. Yep.
00:46:31
Mike Meglino
And then days after when we were going around and just checking after drifting and all that, we'd take the brine unit out and dabble in it there during the day. Everything seemed to work pretty good about it.
00:46:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool she had good results okay
00:46:44
RICK JAMES
Sweet. to do Did you just use straight rock salt or you used treatise salt or what?
00:46:50
Mike Meglino
So we we run clear lane, but
00:46:53
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:46:53
Mike Meglino
the only down, like with the salt shortage this year, we didn't have a problem getting material. We just couldn't get treated. So after the shortage really hit, um we got limited to white only.
00:47:06
Mike Meglino
So we were just running pure right pure rock salt at that point.
00:47:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
okay
00:47:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:47:10
Mike Meglino
But
00:47:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Should have let me know. I could have got you totes of fucking IBG.
00:47:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, because the clear lane was, like, nonexistent this year.
00:47:18
Mike Meglino
next year.
00:47:21
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:47:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nobody could get it.
00:47:23
Mike Meglino
Yep. Yeah. they Once, once they sold out early on, it was, it was gone. i mean, I still have some in the bend. It was all the way in into the back of the pile as we kept getting more in, but we'll find that sometime.
00:47:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:35
Mike Meglino
Maybe hopefully not, but that means we're getting real low at this point.
00:47:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:47:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah. What kind of contracts are you doing out there then?
00:47:46
Mike Meglino
So we are 40% seasonal, about 60% per push with a mix of hourly stuff in there still. So we still get hourly sites in this little region.
00:47:53
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:47:56
Mike Meglino
Can't get away from it.
00:47:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Bet you'll get away from it this year after they got those bills.
00:48:04
Mike Meglino
I wish, to be honest with you.
00:48:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they won't let you do it.
00:48:07
Mike Meglino
No, it's it's just how they've they've been for 50 years or whatever it is.
00:48:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
What kind of sites are there, if you don't mind me asking?
00:48:13
Mike Meglino
School district.
00:48:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's why.
00:48:16
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:48:16
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:48:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. Yep.
00:48:18
Mike Meglino
Yep. So, and that's downside of starting to get more efficient with pushers and all that is we're getting faster, but they still go with hourly rate.
00:48:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:48:32
Mike Meglino
So I don't know how to beat that.
00:48:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that sucks.
00:48:35
RICK JAMES
Lowest bid wins, right?
00:48:36
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:48:36
RICK JAMES
Schools. Same deal.
00:48:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that sucks.
00:48:41
RICK JAMES
That's what sucks.
00:48:41
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:48:42
RICK JAMES
We're getting more efficient and they want to still stay with the same deal.
00:48:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
of Screw it.
00:48:45
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:48:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Put the rubber edge pusher there.
00:48:46
RICK JAMES
Do
00:48:48
Mike Meglino
Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:50
RICK JAMES
you salt the schools then or do they do it themselves?
00:48:52
Mike Meglino
Yeah, we know we saw so we plow the parking lots and salt the parking lots they take care of sidewalks.
00:48:59
RICK JAMES
Gotcha.
00:48:59
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:49:00
RICK JAMES
Perfect.
00:49:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Interesting.
00:49:02
Mike Meglino
Yeah. Perfect. You can't complain. We don't have any shoveling there. No sidewalk responsibilities. We come in and clean the parking lots, salt them, leave.
00:49:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
just go really slow that's all you can do honestly because they're not going to entertain it any other way they're gonna if you raise your price to reflect your efficiency increases they're just going to go with a lower bidder you know so you can't can't really make your money back uh any other way that's uh that's the shitty part of it so if you want to keep them that's the only option go slower which i hate i hate saying that but
00:49:13
Mike Meglino
Yeah, pretty much.
00:49:25
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:49:36
Mike Meglino
Exactly. we just We just found it. We're more efficient, so now we just keep less equipment there is what it comes down to.
00:49:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:49:44
Mike Meglino
And run smaller pushers versus bigger pushers. Like we'll run a 10.5 versus putting a 13 on it because why do I want to be more efficient?
00:49:52
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:49:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I agree.
00:49:55
RICK JAMES
Smart.
00:49:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
You guys use a ah contract at Weather Service for the winter?
00:49:59
Mike Meglino
We do. About three years ago we started.
00:50:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Who you got?
00:50:03
Mike Meglino
What's that?
00:50:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Who you got?
00:50:04
Mike Meglino
Weather Pros. Rob and Nick.
00:50:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Weather Pros? How'd Rob do?
00:50:08
Mike Meglino
Not bad. A lot of undercalling how much we were getting this winter.
00:50:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:50:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that was everybody. Yep, that was us too.
00:50:14
Mike Meglino
Yeah, exactly.
00:50:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, i so I've said that numerous times. Like you nailed every time we were getting snow the first half of the winter, but you undersold it by almost 100%. It was ridiculous.
00:50:24
Mike Meglino
Yep. Yeah, until the second half of the winter and then everything we were supposed to get, like that big storm, you guys got pummeled, Steve. We got two inches out of it.
00:50:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Well, I wish.
00:50:33
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:50:34
Mike Meglino
We were supposed to get about two feet and a day and about 12 hours before it shifted about 15 miles back to the coast and we missed it by about a 10-minute drive.
00:50:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it went back to the coast. Yep.
00:50:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that was, ah yeah, that you know, it is what it is, man.
00:50:48
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:50:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
There were a lot of sharp gradients like that on the East Coast this year where the difference of 50 miles was the difference of a foot of snow. It's like crazy.
00:50:58
Mike Meglino
Yeah, was insane.
00:50:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was such a sharp cutoff.
00:51:04
RICK JAMES
How many guys you're running in a i that you do out now night event?
00:51:11
Mike Meglino
In-house, we're running about 18 guys on on your average storm. um come If you include subs, we're about 22 to 25.
00:51:24
Mike Meglino
two to twenty five
00:51:26
RICK JAMES
it
00:51:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool. Very cool.
00:51:27
RICK JAMES
These full time guys for you, those 18?
00:51:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:51:29
RICK JAMES
Oh.
00:51:30
Mike Meglino
um No. No. Senior time, we're only about 10 guys, 9, 10 guys.
00:51:34
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:51:35
Mike Meglino
Yep. And then I got some part-time guys that own their own companies that fill in that don't do snow and couple other guys that get laid off from their jobs in the wintertime.
00:51:42
RICK JAMES
here Nice. How's your attention been for employees?
00:51:50
Mike Meglino
I got a core group of about six or seven that stick around. And then you're stragglers, labor guys that bounce in and out.
00:52:00
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:52:01
Mike Meglino
Other than that, I mean, you can't find enough. I could definitely use a couple more in the season, but for most part, it's a decent core group.
00:52:05
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:52:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:52:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Is there a lot of competition in your area as far as snow?
00:52:17
Mike Meglino
Seems like every year there's 10 or 15 more guys trying to get into it.
00:52:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
More. Yeah.
00:52:21
Mike Meglino
yep
00:52:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:52:23
Mike Meglino
Yep. Yep. lot of single pickup trucks and lot of guys that, oh, I bought a mini excavator. I want to do this and I'm going to plow snow in the wintertime too because these guys have it so good.
00:52:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, right.
00:52:35
RICK JAMES
Thank you.
00:52:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
And how do you guys, like, when you go into these meetings or or, you know, when you're presenting bids, how do you guys feel like you separate yourselves from the competition in the area?
00:52:45
Mike Meglino
I mean, at this point, I feel like if we're if we're even an entertaining going into a bid, it's because they already know who we are and the service we can provide.
00:52:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm. Perfect.
00:52:53
Mike Meglino
But I mean, honestly, we're just making sure the detail's on point and making sure that everybody's happy. Like said, our customer retention's been phenomenal over the last 10 years since we really pushed into commercial that we still have sites that we started with.
00:53:11
Mike Meglino
Like our first commercial site's still here.
00:53:14
RICK JAMES
Nice.
00:53:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's saying something.
00:53:18
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:53:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
I never realized, honestly, I never realized that how many how many guys doing snow are just doing snow because it's something to keep them busy during the winter, but they honestly don't give a shit about it. Like, I've recently found guys that are on revolving doors. They have different sites every year.
00:53:38
Mike Meglino
Yep. yep
00:53:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, how do you keep, like, I get it. Like, but how do you keep doing that? Like after three or four years, you've kind of, you're you're in a reputation for having, you know, being lost sites for failure to perform at a high level or something.
00:53:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's got to follow you to a degree, but there's a couple guys in my area that routinely are, you know, 75% of their sites are different every year for the last three or four years.
00:54:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, how do you get away with that?
00:54:09
Mike Meglino
I personally see, we see the same thing here. You get the same site you drive by and every year there's somebody different there. This guy's doing site three doors down because he lost this one.
00:54:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:54:20
Mike Meglino
Like, it's like nobody talks, but again, like, so this year was a good year. Last year was decent. We had a high number of vents, but we were still below average. The year before that, we had a whopping 13 inches of snow.
00:54:35
Mike Meglino
The year before that, we had 11, but then COVID, COVID,
00:54:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right.
00:54:38
RICK JAMES
20, 1920, yeah, 2021, yeah.
00:54:38
Mike Meglino
we had 86 inches.
00:54:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yeah. That was what? 1918, 19 and
00:54:45
RICK JAMES
nineteen twenty what
00:54:47
Mike Meglino
Yeah, 18 was a good winter.
00:54:47
RICK JAMES
yeah twenty twenty one yeah
00:54:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:54:51
Mike Meglino
um Yeah, 21 was a good winter. Well, good February, I should say. We had like five foot of snow in February alone.
00:54:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you got a lot of market deviation there, a lot of standard deviation in the snow.
00:55:02
Mike Meglino
The last, if you look at the last five years, yes. Before that, it's pretty consistent.
00:55:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Or you just had two abnormal years, like a total anomaly, and you're going to 40 to 50 inches.
00:55:17
Mike Meglino
Yeah, I mean, the two abnormal years, I'd say, I would definitely say they're abnormal. um I mean, I feel like the whole East Coast was abnormal those years.
00:55:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, a lot of places were, honestly.
00:55:27
Mike Meglino
Because, like, we go, yeah, we go north, up to Tug Hill snowmobile in all time.
00:55:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you were not in certain areas, yeah.
00:55:36
Mike Meglino
And even up there was well below average.
00:55:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I mean, but below average for up there is still 150 inches.
00:55:43
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:55:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
it's like, they're a market.
00:55:45
Mike Meglino
Yeah, when inches.
00:55:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
it's insane how much the i mean tug is crazy that's That's like, Jeremy, like, they're the they're the places you hear about that. Oh, by the way, we're getting a we're getting a so a little snowstorm on Wednesday.
00:56:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're going to get 14 inches. That's a little storm on the plateau.
00:56:06
RICK JAMES
Oh,
00:56:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, they have that area. They could have 40 inches of snow in 24 hours. Like, total just whiteout shutdown.
00:56:14
RICK JAMES
wow. OK.
00:56:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's like the snowmobile capital of New York.
00:56:19
Mike Meglino
But it's nothing for them. like
00:56:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's nothing.
00:56:21
Mike Meglino
They literally, the plow truck shut down.
00:56:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Literally, it's just a Tuesday.
00:56:23
RICK JAMES
but they all But they also don't push that either. They just let that shit pile up more like kind of like out west of Montana and stuff where they don't โ€“ not everywhere in Montana, but I've heard a lot of places they just kind of let it โ€“ you know, even like when you were โ€“ where were you for hockey?
00:56:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah, up in Lake Placid. Yeah.
00:56:40
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you said is they just let it build up and nobody's worried about it.
00:56:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they they they plow the main roads, but everything up, yeah, everything else, it's like, yeah, you come when it's done.
00:56:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah,
00:56:44
Mike Meglino
Yeah, they don't touch you until there's...
00:56:48
RICK JAMES
we'll get to
00:56:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:56:49
RICK JAMES
We'll get to it, yeah.
00:56:51
Mike Meglino
Yeah, they they shut down at 10, 11 o'clock at night and they come back out at 5 a.m.
00:56:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Crazy.
00:56:55
Mike Meglino
and push the roads up and whether there's a foot or three feet.
00:56:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, because the population's not there to warrant, you know, being out 24-7. But, yeah, it's an amazing amount of snow up there.
00:57:04
Mike Meglino
and the trucks are running dual wings on each side, and but they still drag out the old 70s Oshkosh to push back the banks.
00:57:05
RICK JAMES
Oh.
00:57:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:57:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, with the V.
00:57:13
RICK JAMES
Blue blades.
00:57:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:57:13
Mike Meglino
Yep.
00:57:14
RICK JAMES
Blue blades.
00:57:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Blue blades.
00:57:16
RICK JAMES
Blue blades. Yeah.
00:57:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, God. Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, that's... So, I mean, those two years for you, then, would just be an anomaly. And, you know we'll see what next year brings.
00:57:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you're back on track again next year with another good year, I think you'll probably just have an anomaly there with those two years. Where a lot of places, like you said, a lot of places in the Northeast have the same shit.
00:57:36
Mike Meglino
That's what I'm thinking.
00:57:41
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:57:42
RICK JAMES
So do you, do you work well with a lot of the contractors around there? I know you said you got a lot of new guys coming in, but is there, um I'm guessing there's like a core group like yourself that are normal guys that do everything. Do you guys share information or you guys hold stuff tight or.
00:57:57
Mike Meglino
Can we share a little bit of information? But you still get a loose lip a little bit and
00:58:00
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:58:04
Mike Meglino
Now somebody comes in and knows your number a little bit too much. and
00:58:08
RICK JAMES
Dan Zuber kind of stuff.
00:58:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Jesus Christ.
00:58:13
Mike Meglino
oh
00:58:14
RICK JAMES
We were giving him so much shit the other night. Zuber.
00:58:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's that guy.
00:58:17
RICK JAMES
Zuber's here.
00:58:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's that guy. ah i've i'll
00:58:19
RICK JAMES
Loose lips. Zuber.
00:58:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Five dollars cheaper.
00:58:25
RICK JAMES
I had to throw it in there because i we were giving him so much crap the last few days. so
00:58:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
funny.
00:58:29
Mike Meglino
were busting them pretty hard at Storks too at the pre-party there.
00:58:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Wow.
00:58:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
The Zuberman. How old is he now?
00:58:40
RICK JAMES
I don't know, I didn't give him any spankings.
00:58:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Just knew his birthday. just You didn't know how old, though.
00:58:45
RICK JAMES
we just We just celebrated his birthday. We didn't, he didn't.
00:58:47
Mike Meglino
Just happened to be in Ohio when it was his birthday, so you figured you'd show up.
00:58:51
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:58:52
Mike Meglino
Where'd they pay you for a guest appearance?
00:58:54
RICK JAMES
So there's always a fee, Mike, you know that.
00:58:58
RICK JAMES
and don't I don't travel cheap.
00:58:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
They couldn't afford me.
00:59:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
They couldn't afford me.
00:59:00
RICK JAMES
I don't travel. Yeah, Steve couldn't even come.
00:59:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
if you count his clothing.
00:59:02
RICK JAMES
They couldn't even afford him. I'm the cheap one.
00:59:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
not if you count his clothing
00:59:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah, well, that that's separate.
00:59:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:59:11
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
00:59:14
RICK JAMES
And my tanning.
00:59:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
the tanning the guys were hammering you pretty good on that uh i was staying out of it i was staying out of it oh beach bum tanning uh
00:59:20
RICK JAMES
It doesn't stop. I love it. I love it. Yeah. ah ah
00:59:27
Mike Meglino
I'm the tannish guy at Storks.
00:59:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah John, the big daddy there from Arctic came up with, a he says he said, who was that guy back in the 80s, the actor?
00:59:31
RICK JAMES
Fuck, yeah.
00:59:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
He had the gray hair, but he was he was so dark. And he i like, George Hamilton?
00:59:40
RICK JAMES
um oh I'm good.
00:59:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
like I think it's George Hamilton.
00:59:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
He goes, there it is, Jeremy Hamilton.
00:59:45
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yep. Yep.
00:59:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was great.
00:59:48
RICK JAMES
I'm getting hammered. I love it.
00:59:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, God.
00:59:51
RICK JAMES
least I gave somebody, at least I gave everybody something to talk about, so.
00:59:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm
00:59:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, it's funny, man. It was funny. Mike Santa Lissito watching you do the car corral. He just, I'm videoing it and you hear Mike in my ear go, the white pullover was not a good choice with that tan.
01:00:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
It so funny.
01:00:07
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah.
01:00:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good times, man. Good times.
01:00:12
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
01:00:12
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:00:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, you want to hit some commercials that might get a drink here?
01:00:18
RICK JAMES
You got it.
01:00:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
right, cool. We'll be right back in one minute. Nope. If I hit the button.
01:01:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, we're back. We are back.
01:01:32
RICK JAMES
gonna I was ask Mikey, and just you you guys use any software, Mike?
01:01:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
What happened? Go ahead.
01:01:38
Mike Meglino
Oh, we are not using any software yet. I've been kicking around Yeti. I just haven't pulled the trigger on that and get a set up.
01:01:47
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:01:49
Mike Meglino
um We do use Java on the green side and overlap it a little bit.
01:01:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
01:01:56
RICK JAMES
Jobber, jobber, jobber.
01:01:57
Mike Meglino
yeah Overlap that a little bit with snow, but not much.
01:02:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Let me ask you question, Mike.
01:02:03
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:02:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you were going to, as a snow guy, if you were going to onboard a new software, what time of year would you do that?
01:02:14
Mike Meglino
I would probably start to onboard that in September, give the guys some time to learn how to use it, get myself familiar with getting it all set up and try and input everything.
01:02:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. Yep.
01:02:26
Mike Meglino
because
01:02:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
You wouldn't wait till winter's starting, right?
01:02:31
Mike Meglino
No, no. i Because, I mean, Jesus, ah we've had October snow in years past.
01:02:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
I've had this discussion with with some of the snow software people, and they swear that most guys want to onboard new snow software in, like, November, December, January.
01:02:38
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
01:02:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:02:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm like, that is bullshit. That can't be right. Like, that'd be the last thing I'd want to do is is change over to brand new snow software while I'm in season. But I said, maybe I'm wrong.
01:03:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
I got to start asking people this because it's now two different software people that have said that. that Oh, no, our busiest months for people subscribing and buying are are December, January, February.
01:03:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm like, that cannot be right.
01:03:15
RICK JAMES
Thank you.
01:03:16
Mike Meglino
Yeah, that that'd be odd because have time to learn how to use it?
01:03:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's what I'm saying. Like, i would think I would think guys would want to start doing it, like, towards the end of the summer.
01:03:20
Mike Meglino
Like I know
01:03:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, July, August, September, that period of time would be. September be the absolute latest. I'd want to screw around with it.
01:03:30
Mike Meglino
yeah right Yeah, I would
01:03:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because think about all the GPS stuff you got to do for sites and shit, input, all that data entry. That's not going to take it. You're still doing other things, too, so it's not an easy process.
01:03:45
Mike Meglino
Yeah, no, just to be able to work on it in free time, forget i it. It'd take me a month to learn to use it.
01:03:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:03:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm going to start asking people that because that kind of struck me as way crazy, but they swear by it.
01:03:52
RICK JAMES
Do
01:03:58
RICK JAMES
you use any view cameras or anything like that? Anything like that, Mike?
01:04:02
Mike Meglino
Not yet. We've been talking with you, but have not brought it on board yet.
01:04:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
10, 4, 5 of 5, Jay.
01:04:10
Mike Meglino
This winter, I wish I had one.
01:04:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, go ahead Yeah.
01:04:13
RICK JAMES
Okay. Okay. Yeah, I bet you did.
01:04:14
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
01:04:16
RICK JAMES
All right, Mike.
01:04:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
I said that too. I said that too.
01:04:18
RICK JAMES
what
01:04:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
I wish I definitely wish I had a couple of views for this winner just because of the amount of events. Like it's.
01:04:27
RICK JAMES
Well, you guys, the areas you guys are in, I mean, like Mike and you have said in past this area will get snow, this area won't get snow.
01:04:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm.
01:04:34
RICK JAMES
I mean, that's pretty routine for you guys the way it sounds like, you know, elevation and everything.
01:04:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
It is, but it isn't.
01:04:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:04:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I also like, I'm small enough that literally like I can drive from the East end to the West end of my furthest, most properties in the snow in 15 minutes.
01:04:49
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:04:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, what i'd like what ah especially this past winter where if you're doing 10 pushes 12 pushes a year you don't get sick of being out but like this year we were at like i think 20 something 28 events overall 29 events that we were out for not to mention your your ice checks you know your your you know the stuff the day after that you're out for by by january i wish i had a camera where i could just look at some of these sites and not have to go out to vis visibly check them so you know the high volume of events i was definitely wishing for a couple cameras even though i you know because you know what you're gonna find but you're still if you're if you're doing your due diligence as a snow guy you're gonna get up and you're gonna drive that 15 minutes just to confirm what you already know
01:05:24
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:05:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then you wasted a half an hour when you could have just checked the camera. So they definitely would have they would have come in handy this year in in a high-volume event winter.
01:05:52
Mike Meglino
Yeah, 100%. I mean, we rolled the trucks, I think, upwards of close to 50 times just to even between plowing, checking, and everything else.
01:05:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it was a lot. Sure.
01:06:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
01:06:01
Mike Meglino
And I'm just like, there was a time where that 3 a.m. wake up every morning was getting old.
01:06:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, mama make it stop.
01:06:08
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
01:06:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:06:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah. All right, Mike, where do you want to see your company going the next five years?
01:06:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah yeah
01:06:17
RICK JAMES
what are you looking for? We're thinking of.
01:06:20
Mike Meglino
um next five i'd definitely like to pick up efficiencies even more somehow not sure how we're gonna go about that um probably add a handful of sites so that we've been pretty happy with a slow steady growth not biting off too much more than we can chew i mean at the same time we still are snow guys and a glutton for punishment i guess at that point but
01:06:44
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
01:06:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
right
01:06:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool um What do you think What's been the best decision you've made In the last five years to get you to this point
01:06:57
Mike Meglino
bringing in live edge stuff cutting back way on salt usage um i mean if i the amount the the amount of salt we put down is minimal compared to what we were doing five six years ago on a similar square footage just from getting rid of rubber edge and being able to clean up stuff a lot easier
01:06:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah
01:07:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
10-4. What do you feel in your neck of the woods there or nationally? What are the biggest issues facing the snow management industry, guys?
01:07:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
From where you sit.
01:07:44
Mike Meglino
honestly lack education if i had to say the amount of guys that want to just jump in a truck go out and try and get into commercial snow game
01:07:56
Mike Meglino
without trying to do any research on it learn anything about it i think it's just a matter of coming in and clearing everything
01:08:07
Mike Meglino
the same way they were pricing their driveways and they're bringing that over to commercial side is it's just like said the amount of guys driving rate down I guess for lack of better terms
01:08:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:08:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
That definitely, definitely part of it for sure. What else you got from her, Jay?
01:08:31
RICK JAMES
Well, Mikey, I think you might have some good stories. why don't you give me got any good plowing stories you want to let us know about?
01:08:40
Mike Meglino
I mean, one of them that rings a bell was, mean, we're going back some years now, back to 18. We had HOA we were taking care of, and inside that HOA, they have their own sewer and water department.
01:08:54
Mike Meglino
Well, the one kid that ran their sewer and water department, was out checking on stuff throughout the storm went to go back and it was decent blizzard i'd have to look back in photos here and one of the march 18 storms you might remember those steve yeah well he was going back down to the sewage treatment plant got stuck in a snow drift
01:09:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep, 20-something inches.
01:09:24
Mike Meglino
And he was, it was hammering two, three inches an hour. He's calling me. He's like, Hey, can you come get, can you come get us? you come get us? I'm like, dude, we're trying to keep the main roads open. I'll send a truck over to you when we can.
01:09:36
Mike Meglino
Well, by the time we got a truck there, the wind was whipping so hard. His truck, the water department truck was drifted up to the door handles on the passenger side.
01:09:48
Mike Meglino
We came back the next morning. Like if we got him out We came back the next morning and i have a picture. All you could see is the top six inches of the back window of his pickup truck.
01:10:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
wow you guys have some pretty decent win there too then
01:10:01
RICK JAMES
so
01:10:02
Mike Meglino
Yeah.

Challenges in Snow Management

01:10:05
Mike Meglino
ah Yeah, this site, there was a lake inside the community and the wind was coming right up off the lake, right out and across.
01:10:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
geez
01:10:17
RICK JAMES
Geez.
01:10:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, you know, that's the one thing we don't normally have to deal with, so I'm very thankful for that.
01:10:18
RICK JAMES
Wind does some crazy shit.
01:10:25
Mike Meglino
It's very seldom, few and far between, we actually deal with it.
01:10:32
RICK JAMES
Oh shit, yeah. oh That's a good picture, Jesus. Yeah, he' he's buried.
01:10:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what lessons in your early years have you learned that might help guys out by passing them on?
01:10:49
Mike Meglino
um don't bite off more you can chew and handle plan on being able to handle it even after something goes down once you have multiple pieces of equipment
01:11:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.

Importance of Planning and Insurance

01:11:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Love it.
01:11:03
Mike Meglino
yeah repetition and backups at that point like we but we We keep a full stock shelf of spare harnesses, spare controllers, spare hoses
01:11:16
Mike Meglino
for everything just to be able to make sure that if something happens at two o'clock in the morning, we're not not too down too long unless it's something catastrophic.
01:11:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:11:23
RICK JAMES
Yeah,
01:11:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah some
01:11:29
RICK JAMES
that's what you got to do.
01:11:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Some people say I'm overly cautious with that, but that's how I do things. Like, can we do this site on our worst day when everything breaks and we can't get anything fixed?
01:11:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Can we still get the site done in a timely fashion? If the answer is we're not picking it up. It's just, you that's, I'm not a gambler when it comes to snow.
01:11:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
I live in New York when the fucking highest liability bullshit fucking lawsuit state in the union. i I envy guys.
01:12:04
Mike Meglino
yeah
01:12:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, I don't have it in me. There are guys that I know that are just like, yeah, fuck it. Roll the dice, baby. I'm like, good for you, man. I do not have that. I do not have that gene in me that, ah yeah, screw it If we get sued, we get sued.
01:12:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
That is the last thing I want.
01:12:20
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:12:22
Mike Meglino
No. That's my biggest fear is dealing with lawsuits.
01:12:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, there are dudes out there that just they don't even give a shit. They don't even have proper insurance. like There's guys in my area that are trying to do commercial snow with a fucking lawn care fucking policy that has nothing to do with snow.
01:12:40
Mike Meglino
The amount of guys that don't know they don't have insurance, though.
01:12:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, the amount of customers that you have to explain that, well, why is this price 75% cheaper than you?
01:12:44
RICK JAMES
yeah
01:12:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I guarantee you this dude, ask for his insurance certificates. I guarantee he does not have snow commercial snow insurance. guaranteed at that price because if he does have all that then please get get my give my number to him and have him call me because i know nothing about what the fuck i'm doing if he can if he can do it for those prices with all the all the boxes checked and he can make money on that then i need to i need to learn from this dude just obviously the last 30 years of my life been you know for naught because i haven't gotten it
01:13:01
Mike Meglino
Oh, yeah.
01:13:02
RICK JAMES
Thank
01:13:27
Mike Meglino
yeah no there if there's somebody bidding something that cheap it's they're gonna get what they pay for but it takes a winner like we just had for people to realize that though
01:13:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
100%. They are realizing it. They definitely are.
01:13:40
Mike Meglino
Yeah, when you're getting the phone calls, mike ah my plow guy didn't show up. Well, I don't know. Does he not have a backup truck? Does he not have any discs? Like, sorry.
01:13:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that happened. That definitely happened. That guy's just literally, that's how we that's how we took the one site over last year, was the guy just, we had a busy, two years in a row now, we've had banger Decembers, where we don't normally get a lot of snow and a lot of events in December.
01:14:03
Mike Meglino
Yeah.
01:14:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
And two years in a row, I think December 24 into 25 was... four into twenty five was so yeah it would have been december 24 we had i want to say 17 inches 18 inch which is a lot for us in december we don't normally get a lot of snow in december and then this year we were 24 we had like almost two feet of snow in in december the guy just he knew okay i way underbid this site we had a busy december he stopped showing up
01:14:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
20 we had a storm the 21st that dropped three inches he didn't show up and then we had another i think two or three inches on christmas eve 23rd into 24th um and he didn't show up again so they started scrambling and they they called and asked if we could rescue him but yeah guys were they were just not showing up okay well we screwed the pooch on this one we're not getting our money out of this site so we might as well just cut cut bait early
01:15:01
Mike Meglino
Oh.
01:15:05
Mike Meglino
And December for the 24-25 winter. I know here was lockdown cold that year too through Christmas.
01:15:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we had a lot of cold.
01:15:12
Mike Meglino
We were sub-zero.
01:15:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yes, we had a lot of

Reflections on Past Winters

01:15:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
cold. it didn't i It didn't last as long as this past winter did, where we had well below freezing for weeks and weeks on end.
01:15:19
Mike Meglino
No, we're...
01:15:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
But we yeah, we had two or three weeks in December and then early January that were that were below freezing with very little reprieve.
01:15:31
Mike Meglino
Yeah, we had 41 inches of frost, I think, was the most frost we saw this year.
01:15:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
41 inches in the ground. Wow.
01:15:37
Mike Meglino
Yeah, 41 inches where anything was plowed off.
01:15:38
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
01:15:40
Mike Meglino
anything Anything with snow on it doesn't, it only had one, two, three inches.
01:15:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
sure yeah wow that's crazy
01:15:43
Mike Meglino
But yeah, if it was plowed off, we were seeing up to 41 inches of frost.
01:15:45
RICK JAMES
Okay.
01:15:49
Mike Meglino
Yeah, and that's it's been 2014 was the last time I can remember winter like that, with that cold that long.
01:15:56
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
01:15:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
wild
