Introduction and Overview
00:00:16
tyrellknifeworks
Hello out there in knife making land. This is Denistral Terrell Knifeworks, and my co-host, I was going to say Eric. side I am out of it today. Jared Sandwall from Echo Blades. yeah How you doing? I'm out of it.
00:00:33
echo_blades
ah Good yeah, you slayed that intro bro.
00:00:37
tyrellknifeworks
I know, man.
00:00:38
echo_blades
I mean murdered it.
00:00:38
tyrellknifeworks
That was awful.
00:00:39
echo_blades
I was just pumping you up, too That
00:00:43
tyrellknifeworks
See, don't get my hopes up. Man, I know, right?
00:00:47
echo_blades
was a hard fall Well
Weather Impact on Knife Making
00:00:51
tyrellknifeworks
ah I guess I've just been so happy the weather hasn't been shitty that, you know, I'm so excited. I need to get in the shop and spend more time there.
00:01:03
echo_blades
Yeah, we did.
00:01:04
tyrellknifeworks
How's it been?
00:01:06
echo_blades
It's been okay. Good. Um, excuse me. We had, uh, like you said, some, some decent weather and, um, yeah, it's been good.
00:01:20
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, last week kind of sucked.
00:01:23
echo_blades
How how did work go last week?
00:01:27
tyrellknifeworks
Well, uh, I told you I had those, you know, whatever it was week and a half ago, two weeks ago, weather was saying it was going to be like high eighties, low nineties for Wednesday, Thursday. And I told you I was going to try to cancel that Wednesday, Thursday class.
00:01:42
tyrellknifeworks
Well, it turns out that they, he was coming down with his wife and they're there from Oregon and they're, they had a, um, Airbnb booked and they were going to go to the city anyway and they're booked up through the rest of the summer. And I said, well, there's no way we're going to do a Damascus
Successful Copper Damascus Class
00:02:02
tyrellknifeworks
class. That would just be, you know, we would die of heat stroke. Uh, but the Monday, Tuesday class was, um, kind of a hybrid copper Damascus class.
00:02:12
tyrellknifeworks
It was like, uh, kind of like my two day knife making course, but we spend the The idea was to spend half of the first day making copper Damascus and then make a knife. And that's what I did for the guy Monday, Tuesday. So then I said to Michael um for the Wednesday, Thursday class, I said, do you want to do that instead? And he said, sure, copper Damascus sounds fun. So I did two copper Damascus classes back to back, which was fine because we were done forging by. Oh, the first day took a little while.
00:02:46
tyrellknifeworks
um i gave him way too much steel to do the Damascus. We had like 24 inches of Damascus cladding, um which is way too much. And it just took too long to forge. So we were done by like two. um And then Wednesday, we were done before noon, the Damascus. so what And then we just had to like um make the knives. but
00:03:15
tyrellknifeworks
Uh, so we could, the next, the second day on each course, we could close up the shop and, uh, turn the air conditioning on.
00:03:22
tyrellknifeworks
So it was a hundred and 108 or something on, went on Thursday or something like that. So it was a good thing we did that.
00:03:31
echo_blades
Oh, yeah, yeah, it was.
00:03:33
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, it was stupid hot.
00:03:34
echo_blades
That's right. Yeah, Wednesday, Thursday was
00:03:38
echo_blades
Yeah, that's right.
00:03:39
tyrellknifeworks
So it wasn't actually so bad and it got warm by noon, but then we, you know, finished up and. Yeah, it was pretty good.
00:03:48
tyrellknifeworks
But two classes, two classes, a Monday, Tuesday class, and then a Wednesday, Thursday class.
00:03:49
echo_blades
So you did two classes or one? I'm, I'm maybe. Okay.
00:03:57
echo_blades
Gotcha. So you're able to get them both done.
00:03:59
tyrellknifeworks
Got them both done. So when they were both very happy and.
00:04:03
tyrellknifeworks
Um, the first guy had only ever made a, like a spike knife at, um, some other forage. I, he's from down in Southern California, but I guess some forage that was local to him. You can rent time at, he went there and just made a spike knife. And then the second guy, Michael, he came with me, he did a course with me earlier this year in like February or April or something
Student Progress in Knife Making
00:04:28
echo_blades
He's the guy that's made like three knives that are all copper Damascus bangers.
00:04:28
tyrellknifeworks
like that.
00:04:32
tyrellknifeworks
Well, no, no, now he has because he only made one knife and then he just because he, um, so the second guy, the Wednesday, Thursday class, he had a probably, probably a 14 inch piece of copper Damascus when he was done and then chose to make two, um, knives slightly bigger than my sand tigers.
00:04:55
tyrellknifeworks
So we we finished two knives. but He finished two knives in in those days. So he he actually was hand sanding for six hours on Thursday.
00:05:07
echo_blades
I, dude, I love that. That's what I always do to myself is, you know, batch work is great if you're not hand sanding, but I always find myself with like just this huge block of hand sanding time. That's just boo.
00:05:23
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. But while he got on the sand shark and he was, he was using that.
00:05:27
echo_blades
That's a great point.
00:05:29
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, he was using that, but um still, I mean, and if you're not, if you're a rookie at hand sanding, it takes longer, right? You just don't know the tricks.
00:05:38
tyrellknifeworks
So it took him a
Techniques and Challenges in Hand Sanding
00:05:40
tyrellknifeworks
while to hand. And I told him like, Hey, this is Damascus. You don't hand sand it. It's, it's going to look like crap, right? Like it's, you got to at least get it to 220. I think he took it to 400 and it looked great. Like you probably saw those pictures I posted.
00:05:54
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, they came out really nice.
00:05:55
echo_blades
Yeah. I did a great job.
00:05:57
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. So I was thrilled and a lot of people didn't believe it was his second and third knife. So that was good.
00:06:04
echo_blades
Yeah. Some people just. Do it.
00:06:10
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. And he was, he caught onto the grinding.
00:06:12
tyrellknifeworks
And I mean, this is like, you know, the second time he said in-person training. So, you know, he didn't create any bad habits or anything like that. So.
00:06:22
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, yeah, it was a good course.
00:06:27
tyrellknifeworks
And then spent Friday just kind of finishing, or so sorry, starting to finish this knife for the Triple T, which I think will be done tomorrow, which I'm glad to get moved on from that one. But before I go into that, what what what have you been doing?
00:06:47
echo_blades
You took, uh, I guess we'll talk about that, but you took that thing last week all the way to the square end of the block, right?
00:06:55
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, yeah, just slotted the guard, slotted the handle, squared up the, well, drew the lines to square up the the handle.
00:06:56
echo_blades
That's where.
00:07:04
tyrellknifeworks
And then today's form in the, sorry, this next, this week coming episode will be ah forming, the grinding the guard, grinding the handle, finishing it.
00:07:17
tyrellknifeworks
So it's pretty much done now.
00:07:23
echo_blades
I think somebody's coming in my house.
00:07:27
tyrellknifeworks
What's that?
00:07:28
echo_blades
Somebody's walking in. Sorry.
00:07:31
tyrellknifeworks
what's ah What's going on in your shop?
00:07:33
echo_blades
Not much, man. I got the, uh, I did a little bit of a shop time on Saturday. I spent the day heat treating. I have a ah an order um for a Gomai Chupacabra, like a little I don't know. This one's got a little taller blade than than the original, um but not too much. And I heat treated that. And then I got a funny
Creative Knife Making from Scrap Metal
00:08:06
echo_blades
story. So the other day, I well, for a while, I had a like a cut off of a sand my billet that
00:08:15
echo_blades
Um, I did a, uh, a chef knife out of, and I was just like, it was, it's like weird shaped, right? But I knew there was a ah knife in there. So I just kind of started messing around and, um, I profiled a, a Nesmuk. Is that the right name? Yeah.
00:08:35
echo_blades
So I profiled a Nesmuk. And then it's been sitting around for months, right? Classic Jared stuff. And, um, I've had some things to do, but I was just, I was looking for something to do that was, you know, just like, no, just messing around. Right. That wasn't for real type thing. And, uh, so finally on Saturday while I was doing all that, I think it was actually before that. Um, anyway, I went out and. I was last week.
00:09:02
echo_blades
So I, that's what it was. It was, it was last, last week I profiled it. And then I like forced myself to go out there and and and grind it. So I was, I went out, I ground it up. And it's funny because as I was at the, at the grinder, I was, you know, one particular time I like, I pressed a, you know, real hard, gave it a lot of pressure and it just, and if I, the just material was going away and I was like, you know, patting my arms like, boy, man, you must be like working out, man. You, I just ripped into that thing. So keep going about my, my business, get it, you know, pretty close. I ground it thin as shit. Like I was.
00:09:44
tyrellknifeworks
and Sorry, and you said this is a Chupacabra?
00:09:46
echo_blades
No, this was the Nesma. This was just that cut off piece of that little sand my thing.
00:09:48
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, that's my... Oh, yeah.
00:09:52
echo_blades
And I was just going after it, right? And I went super thin. And on Monday, we're Yeah, it was Monday, because I think we recorded Sunday last week. So anyways, on Monday, I was driving to work. And I was just like, man, that was really like easy. And then it just hit me like a ton of bricks. I never he treated it.
00:10:13
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, I thought you were talking about pre-heat treat grinds.
00:10:16
echo_blades
No, I, I thought I was grinding final, you know, post heat treat. Like that's why I was so like impressed with my strength. This, you know, that's manly ass, you know, strength of, you know, Samson or something, as I was just like digging in and the bells were just, you know, the plunge lines were getting squared up real nice and real quick.
00:10:34
echo_blades
And I've, I've pulled the shit out of myself. Cause it just hit me like, because what I think what happened was I was, because it was forged, you know, San my, I saw a scale on it and stuff. And I was like, You know, just convince myself it was he treated. So anyway,
Learning from Mistakes in Knife Making
00:10:50
echo_blades
I didn't he treat it. It's finished shit. So I, as I was he treating the, uh, the Chupacabra, I threw that one in there. Holy shit. So I've never personally experienced the the bacon effect on an edge.
00:11:06
echo_blades
And, uh, wow.
00:11:08
tyrellknifeworks
That's when you showed me.
00:11:11
echo_blades
That's the one I showed you. I was like, holy shit. Um, Yeah, it went for a, it was wavy.
00:11:19
tyrellknifeworks
Roller coaster.
00:11:22
echo_blades
Yeah, it was bad. It was, it was really fucked. So I, am but what I did do because I've been having, not that I've been having problems, but I mean, I always get a lot of decarb for whatever reason. and You know, I remember back in the beginning when I was starting, I was bringing knives over to you and unless you really dug in, um, and grind a lot, all that decarb out. Um, we were getting inconsistent tests on the, on the HRC and stuff like that.
00:11:53
echo_blades
So, um, so I decided to do was I'm sure it's not original idea or anything, but I had a bunch of these stainless steel, uh, packets.
00:12:00
echo_blades
So I just dumped those two knives in there and did, uh, the thermal cycle and that, and that really helped. I was actually pretty, uh, pretty shocked how, um, how clean they came out. you know, um, out of all that cycling, cause you do the, the two thermals and the, and then Neil, uh, but I started getting a wave in that little thing in the thermal cycle. And I was like, Oh, fuck. So after the quench, it was keep back so that was pretty, uh, that was pretty interesting.
00:12:30
tyrellknifeworks
yeah You know, they make these things called Sharpies and you can actually write on your knife ah what you've done to it and what you haven't.
00:12:36
echo_blades
ah Dude, there's a really talented younger maker that you suggest that a while ago, but, uh, He doesn't have much retention but But I uh, so I did that and I was like well fuck, you know, um, and then so I did a video about it and at the end of it I said I wanted to blt I was wondering if I didn't get nothing to back on there. I'm like, come on people. That's a good damn joke Uh, so I ended up re good Yeah, but yeah, but I uh
00:13:03
tyrellknifeworks
i I didn't even catch that joke when you said it. and I was like, what? I didn't get it. I get it now.
00:13:14
echo_blades
So I ended up reprofiling that again and took that thing down and gave it an entirely different shape. um But it came back. It's good straight. And I'm happy with it. I mean, it's an interesting looking thing. The handle on it's super thin. And I had found a piece another cut off of a some scales that I had that fit like perfectly for it. So it's gonna be interesting. I'm actually looking forward to to finishing that one up.
00:13:41
tyrellknifeworks
You know, on the decarb, now I'm, unless I know I'm gonna be doing a ton of grinding on it, um and I'm gonna remove a bunch of stuff, I'm pretty much using the condersal and everything. um
00:13:54
echo_blades
So you'll, you'll heat treat in the, uh, you'll quench with ah that on.
00:14:02
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, oh yeah, it's fine. It's super thin.
00:14:04
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, yeah, it's like, it won't It wouldn't affect that anyway. it's It's like, it's thin as paint, right? So it's, yeah.
00:14:12
echo_blades
Yeah. and That crossed my mind. Cause I need to, I need to get some, otherwise we'll be back at your house here for the next round of stainless because I'm not even at spoil anymore.
00:14:18
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah, actually I talked to Lawrence about carrying it, but the problem is they don't do any kind of wholesale rates or anything like that. So he it's gonna cost him money to get it. to store it and it's going to be selling it at a higher price than they do.
00:14:35
echo_blades
And then he's got, he's got a Marco. Yeah.
00:14:41
tyrellknifeworks
So I don't know that it's really going to make much sense, but I don't think so.
00:14:44
echo_blades
I mean, unless people can't get it, is it something that has a problem going across the border or anything?
00:14:50
tyrellknifeworks
It's, the they don't, they don't make it the Duffy company that carries it. They just don't make it very easy. Like you can't just buy it on their website. You actually have to call them.
00:15:00
tyrellknifeworks
And they'll gladly ship it to you like that's how I got it, but most people want to just do the click on the website and order it right, but you can't do that.
00:15:04
echo_blades
Yeah. Right. Gotcha.
00:15:10
echo_blades
Yeah. Well, the the packets worked great. I was, I was super surprised.
00:15:15
echo_blades
Um, and then even, you know, you you take it out of the packet when you do the the final quench and, uh, you know, there's, there was not much on there. Um, I was, I was pleased.
00:15:24
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't do that for stainless, but for carbon steel, sure. Put a thrown in. I've done that before.
00:15:30
echo_blades
Yeah. um Let me, yes.
00:15:31
tyrellknifeworks
Thrown in steel.
00:15:32
echo_blades
That's what I'm talking about is for for carbon.
00:15:32
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:33
echo_blades
Yeah. Um, But that worked out. Um, but yeah, so I spent that day heat treating and then the the next day I was re profiling and, uh, working on that, glued up some liners and, you know, it was easy going. I wasn't really pushing myself, uh, too much, but, um, just, it was good to be finally back out there and kind of doing it. And then on, uh, Sunday, My buddy ah Derek Biles came over and he's the the guy that bought the the twist Chupacabra. And after I had had reetched it and did all that stuff. We just haven't been able to connect, but he came over on and Sunday and I finally gave that to him. And, you know, he ended up making a post about it, you know, and'm saying some really nice stuff. And as I was reading it, man, I i swear, guys, it's
00:16:33
echo_blades
I, it's, hard I guess it's, it's difficult for me to, to like, it's not difficult, but it's, it's something I'm, it's going to take a lot of time ah to get used to, to hear people saying nice things about, you know, stuff that I've done.
00:16:50
tyrellknifeworks
I say nice thing is that you don't all the time.
00:16:53
echo_blades
Yeah. But you've never, you've never
00:16:54
tyrellknifeworks
I don't mean it. That doesn't mean anything.
00:16:57
echo_blades
Well, no, it means the world to me, to be honest with you, as lame as that is, but I hate saying that, but yeah, no, that, that stuff means the world to me too. But it's like you, you don't love me enough to, you you know, support me with the purchase. So go fuck yourself.
00:17:13
echo_blades
You know, I think it has to do with that customer, you know, relationship of like, yeah.
00:17:16
tyrellknifeworks
I get it, I know I'm busting your balls.
00:17:18
echo_blades
Yeah. Oh, I know you are, but I want to make sure I was given that back there. But, uh, so, you know, like, and then to put it out there. And, and, and ah so I shared that. And, um, so I really appreciate it. I appreciate the kind words and he's, you know, give me some feedbacks, you know, it's comfortable. He, uh, he wanted to make a sheath for it himself. And he, uh, and he ended up making a ah real nice one. He's been carrying it and so it's comfortable.
00:17:41
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I saw the sheets. Looks good.
00:17:42
echo_blades
Yeah. Yeah. I was super happy.
00:17:45
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I gotta tell you, doing that class Monday made me realize, because I put the Forge on Monday, I'm thinking, when when is the last time I've had the Forge on?
00:17:56
tyrellknifeworks
And I'm like, it was to do the Viking sword. So I haven't had that Forge on in over two months. I was like, man, yeah.
00:18:04
echo_blades
Wow. It's already been that long. God.
00:18:10
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. I haven't done anything since then.
00:18:14
tyrellknifeworks
Cause most of the, most of the knives I was doing for blade show were, um, from steel I already had. So yeah, it was stainless.
00:18:20
echo_blades
Or right? You did a bunch of stainless.
Investing in Knife Making Equipment
00:18:23
tyrellknifeworks
So yeah, it was crazy.
00:18:26
echo_blades
That's a trip.
00:18:27
tyrellknifeworks
you So, uh,
00:18:28
echo_blades
Well, I have an Apollo that I've only fired up twice. So I got your beat. Well, that's another good.
00:18:36
tyrellknifeworks
ohn ah sorry, you finished your thought.
00:18:40
echo_blades
I was going to say, because Derek um was coming over and he's he's he's a he's making he makes all kinds of he's a pretty well rounded kind of dude. Like he does a lot of different stuff. But knife making, he was just doing here or there. um But he he sold a couple of knives. And but boy, man, He went all in here in the past couple of weeks. Uh, maybe it's probably been longer than that, but you know, he's got a, he got an even heat, great deal on the marketplace.
00:19:10
echo_blades
He like, you know, redid his, um, uh, Apollo, you know, upgraded it to like front, like a gen five now, um, got an induction forge and like, he's just been on like a fucking tear, dude.
00:19:22
echo_blades
It has been so exciting to watch. ah The, the passion of somebody pursuing, you know, our, our craft. Um, I haven't had the opportunity to, you know, watch and I've had the. you know, developing the the friendship with him, you know, I've got to kind of watch him kind of grow and, you know, and help as much as I can. um But to see somebody like really getting after it and, you know, really putting together a whole thing to get moving, man, it was it's really cool. It was a cool experience there. And then I was like, Yeah, Jesus, man, you're going. I started thinking about like, how you must have felt when I like put together a shop in three months. yeah
00:20:05
tyrellknifeworks
Well, Michael, the guy that was here for the Wednesday, Thursday class has already got an even heat.
00:20:12
tyrellknifeworks
He's building a press. Um, he's ah actually, he's built the press. He's getting the parts powder coated right now. Um, has a, uh, chili forage or like he's already spent like.
00:20:25
tyrellknifeworks
I think 10 grand at least in forging equipment. He's got his grandfather's anvil. He's got all this stuff ready to go. So it, uh, it's same, same thing, just like hitting the ground running kind of thing.
00:20:39
tyrellknifeworks
So got bit by the bug.
00:20:42
echo_blades
Yeah, it's cool ah it's it was cool to see. and so I'm excited, but even then the little, then I got a little pissed off cause he had the, uh, his buddy came in and did all the electrical. So now I'm i'm like, so anyway, I was talking about getting induction for it Dennis gets an induction for, puts it together. Derek gets, just gets one now is this up and running. And here I am just looking at mine. and Like I do everything. So.
00:21:05
tyrellknifeworks
ah Hey, whenever you want. Let's do the electrical whenever.
00:21:09
echo_blades
We missed the cool bus, though. I have a buddy that's going to help me, but I was like, there's no way in hell I'm going to ask somebody to come help me when it's the surface of the sun hot out here. So the past couple of weeks have been bad.
00:21:23
echo_blades
Plus, we had all the push up into a blade.
00:21:24
echo_blades
So I'm good. I was just joking.
00:21:28
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. So do you, I don't remember you you've got room in your big panel to put a 50 amp breaker.
00:21:34
echo_blades
I have the 220 for the welder. in a perfect spot that I just want to replace the the breaker. So I have two 220 amps. I have two slots in there, so it should work.
00:21:49
echo_blades
Yeah, I just need to do
Setting Up for an Induction Forge
00:21:51
echo_blades
it. But the problem is, is that it's only ran for 220, so I got to redo that entire run of the wire. That's the pitch.
00:21:58
tyrellknifeworks
Well, when i'm what I'm wondering is you might want to do the same thing I did and I, where's your main panel, not the sub panel.
00:22:06
tyrellknifeworks
Where's your main panel and the grinders.
00:22:06
echo_blades
Behind the grinders. Behind the grinders. Yeah.
00:22:09
tyrellknifeworks
So why don't we just put that 50 amp in the main panel and then just bust through that wall and put the outlet right there.
00:22:09
echo_blades
On the outside.
00:22:20
echo_blades
It's not a bad idea.
00:22:22
tyrellknifeworks
That's what I did. Cause then I didn't have to, cause that, that fucking six gauge wire is fucking expensive.
00:22:30
tyrellknifeworks
Like you do not want to run 30 feet of that stuff. It's going to cost you $300.
00:22:38
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, that, that wire is expensive. I would just bust it and put that outlet right on the wall behind the grinders and then just put your induction for it today.
00:22:46
echo_blades
Well, you still need a, but don't you still need a, ah I would still need a pretty lengthy extension cord though.
00:22:56
tyrellknifeworks
but You're going to have to put a cord on the induction forge.
00:22:56
echo_blades
I don't have any.
00:22:59
tyrellknifeworks
I'm just saying, put a six foot cord on the induction forge instead of running six gauge wire from your sub panel all the way. like Because that's at the back, right? I mean, you might as well just break through the wall.
00:23:16
tyrellknifeworks
and put that 50 amp right there on the wall. So you have like a foot and a half of cable instead of, and then just mount, put a 50 amp wall mount and then put your six foot cable attached to your induction port.
00:23:32
echo_blades
Yeah, it's not a bad idea.
00:23:34
tyrellknifeworks
Of course, it's a genius idea.
00:23:37
echo_blades
i Yeah, that's great. It's like almost like...
00:23:40
tyrellknifeworks
And it saves your room in your sub panel. So <unk> yeah, we'll figure it out.
00:23:44
echo_blades
Yeah, because I'm maxed with that. I don't have any more room.
00:23:47
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, and that's what I mean. You want to leave some room in that and then that leaves that 20 amp that you have there already. There's no sense getting rid of that.
00:23:57
echo_blades
No, that's what, that's what fires up all kinds of stuff.
00:23:58
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, so so keep that.
00:24:00
echo_blades
Yeah. That'll be for, yeah. If it ever happens, that was intended for the press and the, uh, and the welder.
00:24:06
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, so leave it there.
00:24:08
echo_blades
Yeah. But you would, you would still use that, right? If I was, if I was to do it that way, I could just still use that outlet.
00:24:15
tyrellknifeworks
What do you use? What I'm you lost me.
00:24:20
echo_blades
If I was to read, put the 50 on it.
00:24:21
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, yeah, that's what I mean.
00:24:22
tyrellknifeworks
Leave the 20 there and keep using it.
00:24:24
echo_blades
No, I'm saying if I replace that, if I did it the, the non genius waiver.
00:24:28
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, but but the 50 amps a different outlet. It's a different shape.
00:24:32
echo_blades
Gotcha. Gotcha.
00:24:34
tyrellknifeworks
Like you would, you should put a different outlet on it.
00:24:38
echo_blades
Gotcha. All right. Well, well, there we go.
00:24:42
tyrellknifeworks
but Yeah.
00:24:42
echo_blades
We'll do that.
00:24:45
tyrellknifeworks
So I did end up, while ah while Michael was hand standing, I did end up spent an hour, probably two hours, and made five coffee scoops. So I got some more of those. I used that to, I don't know if you saw my post, that little tiny hammer that we got from our sponsor.
Experiments with Small Hammer Techniques
00:25:03
tyrellknifeworks
i um Two bastards, Texas Smithian supplies for all your hammer needs. Go get yourself a ah fat peen or
00:25:18
tyrellknifeworks
or if you're up in Canada, you can get a two bastards hammers from Maritime Knife Supply and go get yourself the new Vaquero, which is specifically for maritime, exclusively, that's what I meant, exclusively for maritime.
00:25:34
tyrellknifeworks
Get yourself a Vaquero or any other hammer that two bastards um Frank over at Two Bastards Makes. But he was giving away those little tiny ball peens. um So I thought, what am I ever going to use this thing for? It's so tiny. I know he calls it a pin setter, but I don't know. I have another hammer that I i have near the the workbench that I guess I use for that. But so I figured I'll try to make a coffee scoop with that thing. And the problem is the head on that ball peen
00:26:07
tyrellknifeworks
He may have a fat peen on the other one, but this was a tiny peen. and
00:26:11
echo_blades
Oh, Taylor two tails. there
00:26:15
tyrellknifeworks
i I bet you I hit that that' scoop like 3,000 times with that with that tiny little hammer to get that dimple pattern.
00:26:26
tyrellknifeworks
But it looks cool. It looks like more like a golf ball than then a coffee scoop.
00:26:33
echo_blades
I agree. I agree.
00:26:34
tyrellknifeworks
yeah but
00:26:35
echo_blades
Yeah, the original spoon that I started, never finished, had ah a smaller peen I used for that. and it But the the spoon itself was a lot smaller, so it was a lot less surface area to mess around with.
00:26:52
echo_blades
But yeah, that's a good choice. It came out cool.
00:26:55
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah. It was, uh, so one of them looks a little different than the others, but, uh, yeah, it's all good.
00:27:00
echo_blades
Oh, you didn't do more than one?
00:27:02
tyrellknifeworks
No, I only, not with that one. yeah just I I started that.
00:27:07
echo_blades
you didn't want to thousand
00:27:08
tyrellknifeworks
I'm like, yeah, this is, this is cool for the Instagram thing, but, uh, screw that. I'm going to use the big one after this.
00:27:15
echo_blades
Yeah. Yeah. Mine's sitting on my dresser. I got to get it out and into the shop and it's definitely too small for my little wheel of hammers.
00:27:26
echo_blades
I think I'd fall right out.
00:27:27
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. I was, if it would have been one size bigger, I probably would have turned it into a, um, um, uh, carbide tipped straining hammer, but, to oh, that was the the first class, the Monday, Tuesday class.
00:27:39
echo_blades
Oh, yeah, that' been cool.
00:27:45
tyrellknifeworks
It was a, he won't, he wanted to make a, uh, a sax. So and it was pretty, it probably had a, eight inch blade on it, since he had a lot of steel.
00:27:56
tyrellknifeworks
And that friggin knife, warped, kind of, it wasn't, it was probably an eighth in vintage. Like it was definitely warped, definitely you no way this was grinding it out. I tempered that thing four times. Like after the initial temper with like a shim temper, could not get this thing out.
00:28:20
tyrellknifeworks
and I'm always, ah it ah to up to this point, I've always been leery using a straightening hammer on a kumai. Because I'm thinking, you're really just denting the cladding. Like, is that going to work once I grind it out? And then ah and then I was figured I would, then I'm going to start i start hitting the the the steel in the core, the 1084 that was the core. So I'm like, and then by the end of it, I'm like doing the copper and everything. and
00:28:51
tyrellknifeworks
It worked. I bet you it was 10 o'clock at night and I bet you I hit that hand, that knife at least 5,000 times with that.
00:29:03
tyrellknifeworks
Like you should, you should, you should have saw it.
00:29:05
tyrellknifeworks
It was like doing five of those scoops.
00:29:09
tyrellknifeworks
There was dense all because I'm like, I'm literally just going team team team team team team team. Cause I'm, I don't want to, it's somebody else's knife right on a course.
00:29:16
echo_blades
Right, right.
00:29:17
tyrellknifeworks
Like I don't want to, I don't want to break it.
Straightening Warped Knives
00:29:21
tyrellknifeworks
but I want it ready for him to do the next day or else, you know, he's not going to finish the course on time. So I was, uh, but yeah, it worked.
00:29:30
tyrellknifeworks
So yeah, you can use a straightening hammer on Kuma, even if it's copper cladding. And we had a lot to grind anyway.
00:29:37
tyrellknifeworks
So it was all those things ground out and it was, it was pretty straight.
00:29:41
echo_blades
Nice. Straightening happened for the win.
00:29:45
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah. And I have like 10 of those carbide ball bearings now I've been meaning to make, because the one I have is it's not very, um and I'm going to make my own because the one, someone made me, and I'm sure it was a patron and thank you for sending it, but it's really, um it's not very aggressive.
00:29:53
echo_blades
You made your own? Okay.
00:30:08
tyrellknifeworks
So it like took forever. So I want to, set like a quarter inch ball bearing in ah in a hammer and actually make one. And yeah, just try and make it when they don't look like they're that hard to make. So I'm going to try to make one.
00:30:28
echo_blades
That's right. Sweet dreams are made of these.
00:30:35
echo_blades
I play this on purpose. I didn't know my volume was on. But um the guy that we get the the coils from, Cloron Forge.
00:30:43
tyrellknifeworks
Mm hmm. Clovar and Forge.
00:30:46
echo_blades
Yeah. I just saw a post here.
00:30:49
tyrellknifeworks
I know exactly what you're going to say.
00:30:49
echo_blades
He's making he's making a quick connect ah for the to change the coils out.
00:30:58
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, yeah, I'm all over that.
00:30:59
tyrellknifeworks
I saw i saw it today.
00:31:00
tyrellknifeworks
I'm like, yeah.
00:31:02
echo_blades
I looked and I was like, did I miss? Nope, I got a reminder set on August. That's that's awesome.
00:31:08
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Yeah, that's really cool. and it's So you just you just leave the um those things on and those quick connects.
00:31:19
tyrellknifeworks
You can just move any of the, yeah.
00:31:22
echo_blades
Yeah, maybe no, actually they're not coming out for awhile, guys, no. OK.
00:31:29
echo_blades
No, I'm kidding. Yeah, that was really cool. ah
00:31:34
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, he's going to sell a lot of those. assuming i mean I'm assuming he's tested these. i mean i don't I don't know. Did he invent these? Are these like a common thing? I don't know.
00:31:43
echo_blades
I have no idea. There's not really much on the post except that cool song with him quickly changing out those coils. So I thought it was badass.
00:31:51
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. I'm not a plumber, so I don't know if that's like just a regular thing, and we just don't know about it, and this is a new use for it, or if like he invented this or what, but it's like this little What would you call a little clasp or whatever that goes in it?
00:32:08
echo_blades
Yeah. I want to call like a key of some kind, but, um, I can only think of a, I can only think of a, uh, a fire sprinkler reference that no one will get, but it looks like a pause lock connection for an old product for fire sprinklers.
00:32:10
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, it's like a little spacer.
00:32:25
tyrellknifeworks
You're right, no one's gonna get that.
00:32:25
echo_blades
That's yeah. Well, Derek miles will. So yeah,
00:32:33
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I need to get some of those.
00:32:36
echo_blades
yeah really cool.
00:32:39
tyrellknifeworks
So, oh, oh, i I, you know, I've been working on that or I, I had that stainless k-tip, um, Kyoto that I was making for my kitchen. Um, finally put it in the kitchen. So I finally have one of my own, like, yeah, own knives.
00:32:59
tyrellknifeworks
I mean, I have a knife in my kitchen of mine that I've made, but it's carbon steel knife and I don't like really like to bring it out because
00:33:06
echo_blades
That's garbage, though.
00:33:07
tyrellknifeworks
the kids and my wife leave it at the bottom of the sink and it gets rusty. And now my wife doesn't want to use it because she's scared to make it rusty. And yeah, so it's, but the stainless one I love because it's a, it's a big chef knife and I like big knives.
00:33:21
tyrellknifeworks
I don't like the little, you know, six inch knives my wife and likes to use.
00:33:25
echo_blades
heard heard Heard about that.
00:33:31
echo_blades
but Six inches is fine.
00:33:34
echo_blades
oh There is so much there.
00:33:35
tyrellknifeworks
But I mean, I've used my, and I'm just glazing over that.
00:33:39
echo_blades
There is some I get. No, you're not. We are not going right by that. But I just want to just thank you for that beautiful sound bite because I just might clip that.
00:33:51
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, you don't have the ah the soundboard idea.
00:33:55
echo_blades
I know some people though.
00:34:00
tyrellknifeworks
Bobby, you've leave that one alone.
00:34:01
echo_blades
He just did a six inch fucking pickle thing last week. That's a bummer.
00:34:10
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, no, no repeats.
00:34:12
echo_blades
Yeah, that's great.
00:34:15
tyrellknifeworks
But I mean, I've used my own knives, of course, and I've tested them and stuff like that. But not to the point where I've used it, like, hey, I'm using this knife every day, because that's the one I reach for now. Right. And I got to say that thing is, of course, it's sharp, because I just sharpen it. But yeah, it's got an S grind. And that thing just flies through things.
00:34:38
echo_blades
performing well.
00:34:40
tyrellknifeworks
I was cutting onions and peppers and like like no resistance whatsoever. So I was really happy with it. So I just got to keep perfecting that S-grind because this is actually one where i you know the reason it's in my kitchen, of course, because there's a little defect where like I went too far on the S-grind on one side. So they don't perfectly match. So I don't give a crap about that. It's a cosmetic things. That's why it's in my kitchen, of course.
00:35:12
echo_blades
That's good. That's what you do with blends. You keep them or you learn from them.
00:35:17
echo_blades
Good for you.
00:35:17
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, but yeah, i was I was very happy with how it performs. So I think I'm gonna make a um a shorter version of that knife, because that thing is like going on nine inches, like it's a pretty big knife.
00:35:32
tyrellknifeworks
So I'm probably gonna make a like a six and a half, seven inch version of that knife, or maybe even a Santoku or something.
00:35:41
echo_blades
Yeah, that's I was thinking the same thing because, well, I'm actually going the other way, though, um because the knife that we have that I made for for Lynn is a carbon knife, but it's it's. Yeah, it's probably. Maybe six, but um she uses it all the time and for her it it's fine, but, you know, that's like one of the first ten or so knives that I had made and the heel is really short. But um I was just messing around with that. I made some potatoes, breakfast potatoes, and I cut a shitload of them up. But I was, you know, I gotta start using it and testing, you know, just using performance stuff. It did pretty well, too. um I have a reel here that I was I've been meaning to post. I made chorizo and eggs and kinda
00:36:34
echo_blades
Um, did a little reel, but I never posted it, but yeah, I want to get a ah slightly bigger one to, uh, like a taller and a little longer too.
00:36:42
tyrellknifeworks
Like a taller one. You mean like taller heel? Yeah.
00:36:45
echo_blades
Cause, um, that yeah we're like in the petty range right now because they're all, I don't know is ah seven, like just over a petty or like it's almost yeah.
00:36:54
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Like a chef is like seven to 10. Um, seven is kind of, cause I mean, if you talked to America, he's like, yeah, he mostly makes seven and chef knives.
00:37:05
tyrellknifeworks
Cause the big ones are, you know, most people don't want the big ones.
00:37:10
tyrellknifeworks
I like the big one. I have big hands and, um, you know, but I understand like women are going to want the small one, you know, fits in the hand better.
00:37:21
echo_blades
For the hands.
00:37:24
echo_blades
I don't know, man. This might be another plug for two bastards fat pain right now.
00:37:31
echo_blades
I don't know what you're talking about, my friend.
00:37:35
tyrellknifeworks
Oh God, we have to edit this show.
00:37:36
echo_blades
That's good. Yeah, this is great. All right. Well, let's get out of there and, uh, yeah, since you have that, yeah, since you don't work anymore, I might hire you to make me a couple of profiles.
00:37:43
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, but i I do have to get some some more knives, laser, not laser, water jet cut. So I might work on a couple of new designs for some culinary knives.
00:37:58
echo_blades
Cause I am seriously not digging CAD work on that. I still, I tried to open it up the other day and I was just like, fuck this. I don't want to even look at another CAD. It's just not my deal right now. So anyways, I just love that you have nothing to do.
00:38:12
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, you're just lazy.
00:38:16
echo_blades
So I'm going to fill your time.
00:38:17
tyrellknifeworks
not give You know,
00:38:17
echo_blades
I want to help you. I don't want you to, you know, get stagnant.
00:38:21
tyrellknifeworks
this week is the, cause like two weeks ago was like July 1st was my first official day of retirement. Right. But then like Parker and I were still working on like sand sharks and getting those out.
00:38:35
tyrellknifeworks
and then July 4th. So of course took the day off for July 4th. And then last week had four days of classes. So this week is really my first week of like just me in the shop working. So I already felt like I was super productive today.
Splitting and Forging Basket Weave Damascus
00:38:53
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, and by the way, I split that basket split that basket weave we were doing.
00:39:00
tyrellknifeworks
I split that today went perfectly. um I haven't forged it back together, so can't tell you went perfect, but um it looks like it looks great.
00:39:09
tyrellknifeworks
So I think I'm going to forge that back together tomorrow. I forged some other Damascus for these kumai karambitz I'm making later this week.
00:39:19
echo_blades
What do you, what do you need that, uh, um, leaf string for top secret?
00:39:29
tyrellknifeworks
It's top secret, I can't tell you.
00:39:32
echo_blades
I just ran out, dude. It's a bummer.
00:39:39
echo_blades
Oh, no, dude, seriously, remember my buddy gave me those.
00:39:42
tyrellknifeworks
No, obviously I didn't remember. I wouldn't have posted it.
00:39:45
echo_blades
Oh, God, yeah, I have two giant leaf springs off of a semi. the The pieces on there are like three inches wide by.
00:39:55
tyrellknifeworks
Okay, perfect.
00:39:55
echo_blades
I'm there there and I have two two full stacks. It's I have endless leaf spring.
00:40:00
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I just need one. How thick are they like? They're probably like a half inch thick if they're of a semi.
00:40:04
echo_blades
They're like a half inch. Yeah. They're like a half inch thick.
00:40:06
tyrellknifeworks
Perfect.
00:40:07
tyrellknifeworks
Okay. Yeah, I just need one.
00:40:08
echo_blades
And they range from like a foot to fucking three feet.
00:40:12
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I need to.
00:40:12
echo_blades
And there's like a stack. There's like four or five of them. Plus, like it's a lot.
00:40:16
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, i I probably if they're half inch, I probably need one because it's got a hole in the center, right?
00:40:24
echo_blades
I'm assuming yeah Jeff actually has them.
00:40:25
tyrellknifeworks
I need probably. OK, I need like one half of a long one um for what I'm going to do.
00:40:36
tyrellknifeworks
Alright, then I can all the other people that have offered.
00:40:38
tyrellknifeworks
I can tell them thank you, but got it figured.
00:40:43
tyrellknifeworks
Um, no, this is for my apocalyptic challenge build.
00:40:47
tyrellknifeworks
I'm just kind of starting to assess the materials.
00:40:48
echo_blades
I played good.
00:40:52
tyrellknifeworks
So, uh, I'll tell you off air what I'm going to make, but, uh,
00:40:58
tyrellknifeworks
But for that, for everyone else, um I need to get off my ass this week and figure out sponsors for that thing and then get the participant list. So in the next two weeks, um I'll be figuring that out, but I haven't announced it yet.
00:41:13
echo_blades
When does that start?
00:41:16
tyrellknifeworks
So I got to work the timeline. I'll probably announce it end of July, beginning of August.
00:41:24
echo_blades
Oh, typically there and it's in October or it ends.
00:41:25
tyrellknifeworks
So two weeks. Yeah, yeah, it the the videos air in October, so but that's that's when it's, yeah, when the viewer builds will be due and and the channel builds, so.
00:41:42
echo_blades
I was just looking at something right now. I just realized that, um, because you're such a kind soul and had me do the triple T, uh, IG account.
00:41:55
echo_blades
I knew it was going to happen, but for the first time I posted a real thinking it was on echo blade and it was on the triple T and I was like, motherfuck.
00:42:01
tyrellknifeworks
I saw that.
00:42:04
echo_blades
And then, ah and then people had already like, you know, and I was like, shit, so I just watched it.
00:42:08
tyrellknifeworks
Because even I replied to it.
00:42:09
echo_blades
Yeah, as I just left it and I was like, what a bonehead.
00:42:13
tyrellknifeworks
Well, it's because they both say you should change the name because they both say Jared Sandoval, so you should actually change if you can. Can you change your name on on IG?
00:42:23
echo_blades
I'm probably I can. Yeah.
00:42:25
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, so you should actually change it too.
00:42:28
tyrellknifeworks
Triple T podcast and then you won't get so confused because every time I like when I'm sending you a message I have to look for your logo. I try to ignore the You know the Jared Sandoval. I have to look for the logo Yeah,
00:42:41
echo_blades
Yeah, that's a good point. and But I don't know. I don't necessarily see. I don't see it, but I have three accounts. So as I'm going back and forth, I just get. Confused, I guess it does say Jerusalem over there, but I don't really pay attention to that, but it it might help.
00:42:59
echo_blades
ah Because it does.
00:43:02
echo_blades
Yeah, but I was laughing. I was like, Mother.
00:43:06
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I did notice you screwed that up, but oh well, it's not the end of the world.
00:43:10
echo_blades
All right. Now.
00:43:13
tyrellknifeworks
But I am working on this some Damascus for some Kuma.
00:43:17
tyrellknifeworks
Hopefully, I mean, if I get my ass in gear, i I might even have that build ready this week. So I want to get more, yeah, for the Kramitz this week.
00:43:24
echo_blades
For the carabiner. When are you doing all that?
00:43:31
tyrellknifeworks
Tomorrow, I'll probably finish the Damascus tomorrow.
00:43:35
tyrellknifeworks
And then um do the knives like Wednesday, Thursday kind of thing.
00:43:42
tyrellknifeworks
Because I would like to get the build video out this Saturday, because I also haven't had a build video since the um the Viking challenge, which is a long, the probably the longest I've gone without a build, a build video, as opposed to like a triple T.
00:44:02
tyrellknifeworks
So yeah, I'm trying to put a lot more focus into um into YouTube builds.
00:44:12
tyrellknifeworks
And I was thinking today, what am I gonna do for this basket weave split that we're doing? And I think I'm gonna turn that into a dagger, a really cool dagger. So we'll see what it looks like when it's done.
00:44:25
echo_blades
That's that does look dagger esque.
00:44:29
echo_blades
I don't know why yeah all all this Kuma right now.
00:44:32
echo_blades
I'm I want to I want to do one now.
00:44:36
tyrellknifeworks
Right. Well, get your ass in gear.
00:44:36
echo_blades
I don't know.
00:44:38
tyrellknifeworks
Get over here.
00:44:38
echo_blades
Yeah, I know. I was just thinking. But I just made a fucking old announcement that I wasn't going to do that, but.
00:44:46
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. You just said last week, you're focusing on mono steel.
00:44:50
echo_blades
But I want to do stuff for myself, though. Yeah, I don't know. I'm never satisfied.
00:44:58
echo_blades
But yeah, but speaking of those, so one of those, one of the things I worked on with Brent when we were out in Florida was worked on a lot like just, I don't know, concepts of of making, you know, um but one of them was like, I've been really I've wanted to for a long time. And I just, I never do um do a belt finish. And because I guess it's who's taught me, you know what I mean? Like, you're really a hand sander, you know? ah So I'll always look at it. And then I was
00:45:36
echo_blades
I think a couple episodes back whenever that was, I was talking about, like, I think sometimes there's some imperfections in there. Every time I handstand, I always go, shit, I thought that was all right. But there's a there's a lot of waves in there. But um I have to the newer, smaller intrepid version that I ah have a belt finish on. I'm super stoked with it. I think it's. I like it.
00:46:01
tyrellknifeworks
Which would you take it to like 400?
00:46:02
echo_blades
And I just I just know I took it to 120 with a Scotch bright.
00:46:08
echo_blades
I think it looks fucking fantastic.
00:46:10
tyrellknifeworks
Well, hey, go with it.
00:46:12
echo_blades
Yeah, I am. I'm already got the bill. I got a it's already sold, so I got to just wrap it up. I'm going to use this. The fat carbon that I got from that blade, it's green and gray.
00:46:23
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. Nice.
00:46:29
echo_blades
No, A's fan. A buddy of mine wants to try that. So it's kind of like I was showing him the, uh, the Albert, the mini Albatross that Brent made. And he's like, that's fucking bad-ass. And so I didn't have the materials to do that, but I was like, I got this carbon fiber with some gray liners. That might look really cool. So I should have that done this weekend.
00:46:51
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, ah I think I should get my shipment from our buddy Lawrence Flake. um What kind of stuff does Lawrence have?
00:47:03
echo_blades
Dude, Lawrence has everything, everything you need to make a knife. You can go see Lawrence Lake at Maritime Knife Supply. He's got handle material, um steel, wood, drill bits, carbides, end mills, calipers, grinders, heat treating ovens, attachments, abrasives. He will even cut your steel if you're a Damascus maker. I still say this every week. Like I'm, I'm so surprised by what an amazing, amazing service that is.
00:47:38
echo_blades
It is such a time saver for guys like you.
00:47:42
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, um I was I was taking the mill scale off of um steel today thinking I'm so happy I didn't have to cut up the steel.
00:47:54
echo_blades
That's amazing. Love it.
00:47:56
tyrellknifeworks
Actually, and I got a drop of 15 and 20 from him that was like bandsaw blade and that stuff doesn't even have mill scale on it.
00:48:06
tyrellknifeworks
It's nice shiny steel, so I didn't even have to. That stuff was awesome.
00:48:11
echo_blades
Yeah, I mean, you can whatever you need.
00:48:14
echo_blades
He's got you. Like we already talked about. We got you can get your exclusive two bastards hammer, the key arrow edition. And you know what else he also carries.
00:48:27
echo_blades
He carries Gator piss.
00:48:32
tyrellknifeworks
Gatorpis, that reminds me of, you're saying you want kumai, well, you could always get some at Baker Fortune Tool.
00:48:41
echo_blades
That's a great idea.
00:48:43
tyrellknifeworks
instead of Instead of making your own, you can go get some. Right now, they're featuring Chevron Gomai with a bronze shim, which is $100.
00:48:55
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. A hundred layered Damascus cladding solid bronze shim and a 1084 core, which is actually my, this is what we did for the guys last week in the, in the course. I love the black edge on a blade. I just think that looks so sexy. So, um, yeah.
00:49:13
tyrellknifeworks
And I think actually I'm going to try to replicate their riptide pattern for these, uh, these karambits. So trying to steal one of one of Koi's designs here, the Riptide, and just see how it goes. Because I've always um i've always done like twist Damascus or something. I've always patterned the Damascus before I layer it with the copper.
00:49:41
tyrellknifeworks
And I know they, but they got those big power hammers, like they can, they've got dyes. It's really hard to pattern with a press or something like that, um, with copper Damascus, cause you're working, it's, I won't say cold, but much colder than like, we'd never be able to use those Chevron dies.
00:50:01
tyrellknifeworks
Like it just, it just wouldn't move, right? Like it's, you're not, you're dealing with like 1750 or whatever temp you're doing, maybe 1800. It's not moving very well in those dies.
00:50:13
echo_blades
Right, right.
00:50:14
tyrellknifeworks
So, uh, I'll be grinding. I'll be grinding the ladder into these things, not trying to press it like like they are, but I'm going to make an attempt.
00:50:25
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, go get yourself some Baker Forge and tool. You can get some incredible steel and install the Baker Forge app, stay up to date.
Promoting Baker Forge App
00:50:35
tyrellknifeworks
ah and For you guys that want steel, one of the most important things about that app is it will tell you when the drops come and that's what you need because these things fly off the shelves. so Definitely go install the app, go to Baker Fortune tool, get yourself um some amazing steel, and use the discount code TTT10 for 10 percent off.
00:50:57
echo_blades
That's right. And the app users get one day sooner access to the drops.
00:51:05
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, okay.
00:51:05
echo_blades
Then it goes to the website. Yep.
00:51:07
tyrellknifeworks
Well, look at that. Why would you not install the app?
00:51:11
echo_blades
I got the app. You got the app?
00:51:13
tyrellknifeworks
I got the app.
00:51:14
echo_blades
You guys should have the app too.
00:51:20
echo_blades
And then when you've built this knife,
00:51:23
echo_blades
Whether you made your Damascus or you went with some beautiful bigger forged tool steel, you can have to finish it with some kind of protective layer. And I recommend that you go see our buddy Travis Haynes at Pelican Pace to finish up and satisfy all of your premium wax needs. He's got hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, a hand salve to take care of your totally manly worked up hands get that rejuvenation in there um and he just came out with some new gritty soap and I am happy to say that I Travis I need you to tell me I need you to tell me if I'm right here but I could be the first person to purchase it
00:52:13
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I thought I'm very interested in that because Parker got me or Logan I don't remember this big jug of like a pump of like kind of like that gritty soap not from not from Travis and I just ran out and
00:52:28
tyrellknifeworks
And that stuff is the best for washing your hands.
00:52:30
tyrellknifeworks
Cause it's, you know, and don' I don't know what's in it, like walnut shells or something, but sand.
00:52:35
echo_blades
I don't know I have some of that agent Agent Orange shit to and and in my shop too but I upgraded to the ah to the new Pelican paste. Gritty soap. I put a pretty big order in there. I got I did the um the custom logo tins.
00:52:53
echo_blades
um Got some soft wax, some handsaw and I got the soap that I was telling him. I was like, I'm trying to buy the soap, dude, where he's like, I haven't put it out yet. I was like, well, can you I want to get it? I'd like to buy. So he he put it up there. So.
00:53:08
tyrellknifeworks
You're just getting custom logos so I don't finger you wax anymore, right?
00:53:12
echo_blades
Yeah, that was it. If you do. Whoo.
00:53:18
echo_blades
I got a bad idea.
00:53:22
echo_blades
Sometimes I wish we weren't recording because I got a fucking damn good one. I just son of a bitch. But yeah, so ah make sure you go check out Travis Haynes Pelican paste and use the discount code triple T 10 for 10% off your next order.
00:53:40
echo_blades
He's been getting a lot of love here the last couple of weeks, man. I know, uh, um, then, um, he just put a post out, but you know, uh, the community's really starting to show Travis some love and it's well-deserved man. It's good dude making a ah wonderful product. And if you haven't tried it, make sure you go check that out.
00:53:58
tyrellknifeworks
How you don't have the soap yet, right?
00:54:01
echo_blades
No, you're in.
00:54:01
tyrellknifeworks
You don't have your. I want to know if the soap smells like oranges, because if it does, I'm on it.
00:54:08
echo_blades
I'll let you know.
00:54:09
tyrellknifeworks
Alright.
00:54:10
echo_blades
I will let you know for sure.
00:54:15
tyrellknifeworks
you know i You know, you know, you know another thing I want you to come over and I want you to bring that Versa flow, because now I'm like I'm debating whether I want to get one of those, so I want to try yours.
00:54:24
echo_blades
Oh man. We got another, uh, I got, I got another, uh, member of team spacesuit.
00:54:27
tyrellknifeworks
I want to try the bonnet.
00:54:31
echo_blades
Uh, Ryan Coakley just got one.
00:54:34
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, did he?
00:54:35
echo_blades
So yeah. So on, on Apple, you could take a picture. You turn any picture into a sticker. And one of my favorite stickers is me in my, in my fucking spacesuit, giving the thumbs up every time. i want So I sent him that and he's super happy with it too, man. So.
00:54:53
tyrellknifeworks
Well, I was in the shop and I'm doing different operations and some require a respirator and some don't. And it's a pain in the ass to keep putting a thing on and off and on and off. And like, and when I'm recording, like i like I have the one that'll flip down. So at least I can flip it down, right? But I can't talk and do like, cause it's like right at my chin, like right in my throat. So it's a pain in the ass. But if I had the ear versifil flips up, right?
00:55:25
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. So if I could do that, then I could talk and I wouldn't, it wouldn't bother me having it on and then I could just flip it down. And, um, so yeah, I'm seriously considering it, but, uh, I want to, I want to try it first and see if I'm going to hate it before I spend like $1,300 on one.
00:55:38
echo_blades
Yeah. Welcome to you'll
00:55:45
echo_blades
be a bonnet boy. You'd be a beautiful little bonnet boy. It'd be so cute.
00:55:52
echo_blades
Yeah, you know, i as I was ah thinking about this the other day um about our sponsors and, you know, like who were we're happy to to be working with here, it just it dawned on me that Minus Koi, who went all in and did this, you know, pursued his passion and turned it into ah to a full-time gig.
00:56:15
echo_blades
um All of our sponsors are doing in this, what they do as, as a side hustle. They're all gainfully employed, working full time and they do this on their own, man. And I just want to commend them and, uh, you know, just give a shout out for, for, cause they're just like us, right? But for most of us, you know, not everybody's retired, but, um, you know, there's, uh, you know, I think makers in general, a lot of us are, you know, Don't do this full time, right from hobbies to to passion to to pursuing just the the desire to make. And then you know um I just wanted to give our sponsors a special little shout out and you know hats off for all the hard work and busting your ass and doing this stuff and bringing these awesome products and services that you guys do to the community. We appreciate you and we're so pleased to be a part of the team there.
Appreciating Sponsors
00:57:09
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I heard, uh, Frank on, um, hustle and grind and, uh, Frank's a busy guy. Like he works crazy hours, um, at the hospital and then, and then doing hammers and all this stuff.
00:57:25
tyrellknifeworks
Like, I don't know where he finds it. I don't know when that man sleeps.
00:57:28
echo_blades
Yeah. No, that was a great, that was a great interview, too.
00:57:29
tyrellknifeworks
So yeah.
00:57:31
echo_blades
you so that The boys that also in Grind did a great job with that. It was good to hear here Frank. He's a hoot. I think the funniest thing he said on that show, I don't care what anybody says, but he, and I think it went over their heads at first because he says, you know, hammers have a very few working hammerheads have very few moving parts in them.
00:57:58
echo_blades
then He's like, that was a joke.
00:57:59
tyrellknifeworks
Yes, I remember that.
00:58:00
echo_blades
I was, I was fucking, I was dying. I was like, that's so fucking great. Man. It's good stuff. Good stuff.
00:58:11
tyrellknifeworks
All right.
00:58:11
echo_blades
but So I don't know what you're doing because I'm going to Reno for a golf tournament ah later this week.
00:58:11
tyrellknifeworks
So what do we do in this weekend? Tell, uh, we got to talk about this. What is happening this weekend?
00:58:22
tyrellknifeworks
I know what I'm doing, which is Friday, right?
00:58:30
echo_blades
Yeah. It's Friday. Yeah. And then normally I would i have some friends that are like, family in the Reno area, and I would go hang out with them, um which I intend to do as well. But we have a buddy out there by the name of Rick Hall. And ah so I hit him up and was like, hey, I'm going to be in Reno. You you're going to be around. I'd love to come hang out. And I was like, we'll finally get away from fucking tag along Tyrell.
00:59:01
tyrellknifeworks
such an na
00:59:02
echo_blades
He's no way he's going to fucking follow me all the way up to Reno's, ah you know, steal my one one time with Rick. But anyways, yeah. So he's been Dennis Weasel this way in.
00:59:11
tyrellknifeworks
okay what really happened
00:59:14
echo_blades
So Dennis Weasel was way in because he can. No, ah ah shout out to the bald man knife and tool. He's a tag along time rail. I was fucking dying.
00:59:29
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I love you too, Brent.
00:59:30
echo_blades
But yes, who? That's the fucking best. But we're yeah, we're going up to see Rick ah this weekend, and we're going to go
Throwing Knife Challenge Plans
00:59:38
echo_blades
hang out. um And I don't know, Dennis is you know has this unending competitive spirit.
00:59:44
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, I'm cooking up something.
00:59:48
echo_blades
He just can't let people just chill out. So we're going to do some kind of challenge. And Rick and I are going to whoop his ass like it was foosball or something.
00:59:56
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, we, we got to do something. Every time Rick and I get together, we are so over enthusiastic about what we're going to get done. And then we end up, instead of hanging out and relaxing, we end up working in the shop like crazy people. So the first time we did that, that ocean sunset Damascus. And then when he came to my shop, we did these Damascus hammers that were great, but they took forever.
01:00:27
echo_blades
Yeah, I remember.
01:00:27
tyrellknifeworks
So this, so this time where we wanted to do something chill, but fun and something we could get some content out of that would be fun.
01:00:36
tyrellknifeworks
So I said, why don't we do a throwing knife challenge and then You know, we give herself like two hours. And you got to make a make a throwing knife. However, I'm assuming that yeah I don't care how you do it. It could be forged. It could be stock removal cares. um And then we'll and then we're of course we're going to um throw them and see see who can who can make him stick and are they going to stay in one piece?
01:01:09
tyrellknifeworks
So I think it'll be fun and it won't be like
01:01:13
tyrellknifeworks
you know, 15 hours in the shop, so it'll still be fun.
01:01:18
echo_blades
Yeah. It's going to be good. I'm looking forward to it, man. i um Rick's a fucking fantastic guy. A lot of fun to hang out with. And I'm super stoked to go go hang out and chill. I might be golfing with Rick, too.
01:01:37
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, really?
01:01:38
echo_blades
He likes to golf. Yeah. Something just fell through for me for Thursday. So I may hit him up. And we may be doing a little golf in there, too.
01:01:44
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, look at you. So I was going to ask you when you were going up. um So you're going up. You might go up Thursday morning.
01:01:53
echo_blades
I'm going to go up Thursday morning. Yeah. We got Thursday morning. Normally I would meet up with some other um guys from other companies and we would do a, like a friendly little, uh, best ball tournament and whoever wins, you know, whoever loses buys lunch before we go and check in to the hotel. Cause I think we're staying at the pepper mill for a couple of days, uh, Thursday and Friday night and then Saturday morning.
01:02:20
echo_blades
cruise over to to Rex, but yeah, but I'll be up there.
01:02:24
echo_blades
I haven't quite decided yet, but yeah, Thursday night and Friday, Friday's the the tournament. So.
01:02:32
tyrellknifeworks
Hmm. All right. Um, I got to figure what I'm going to go up. I might go up Friday, Friday afternoon or something like that. So I'm there early evening or something like that.
01:02:45
tyrellknifeworks
All right, cool. Yeah, that should be fun. I'm looking forward to that, that, uh, and not.
01:02:48
echo_blades
Yeah, me too. I'm looking forward to the whole weekend, dude. The golf tournament is going to be, it's, it's, it's such a good time. They treat, uh, they treat everybody. They're pretty damn cool.
01:02:59
tyrellknifeworks
Cool. Well, okay. You better win when you, what do you get if you win?
01:03:04
echo_blades
I have a bunch of money if your team wins, but ben you try to best ball tournaments are a sham, right? You got people that like keep real score. And then there's people that just, you know, they're negative. Yeah. Like one negative 1000 or something like that.
01:03:21
tyrellknifeworks
Well, they play like my wife at every game. She cheats at every game.
01:03:26
echo_blades
Yeah. I mean, if you got a good golfer in your, in your, in your, uh, in your squad and it's, yeah, anything over.
01:03:33
tyrellknifeworks
But there are other, I've obviously i had've never been in a golf tournament. Like can the same person to get best ball in every hole?
01:03:40
echo_blades
So best ball is your, your foursome. you tee off and then you're hitting and then everybody hits one ball and then they pick a ball to hit from on the next one.
01:03:52
echo_blades
So it's like the best. So it's a team score.
01:03:58
echo_blades
So you could, you you know, somebody could be a fucking just bomb one down the middle of the fairway, right?
01:04:04
echo_blades
And that guy predominantly You know, average golfers, the guy that strikes it right down the middle 300 yards, can't fucking hit it. You know, he's going to hit it 17 times trying to get at the last hundred yards. And then there's guys that can't drive for shit, but they've got a good short game and there's people that can't putt for a shit and, you know, guys that putt. So you put together, a you know, a decent team or you can ah you could score effectively there. So.
01:04:27
tyrellknifeworks
Hmm. Alright, well.
01:04:31
echo_blades
It is the funnest way to play golf if you suck, for sure.
01:04:34
tyrellknifeworks
Well, then that would definitely be fun for me, because I suck.
01:04:37
echo_blades
That's, that's your, that is your game right there.
01:04:41
tyrellknifeworks
Alright, let's do maker spotlight.
01:04:43
tyrellknifeworks
Who you got this week?
01:04:45
echo_blades
I got somebody named. I don't know his name.
01:04:51
tyrellknifeworks
I don't even think I, I don't see a name.
01:04:55
echo_blades
Yeah. I want to say it's Devin, but I don't know. His, uh, handle is and m MRC underscore customs. Um, he's got 172 followers. Um, and he's out of New Jersey. And he's, uh, what does it say here? All skills, design, metalwork, and heat treat done in house by, by him. Uh, he just recently followed me and I, and I was looking at his stuff and I thought, man, this guy's doing really cool stuff, but he's got this picture on his, uh, maybe he just got an even heater here.
01:05:31
echo_blades
We just got this shit eating grin.
01:05:33
echo_blades
And i dude, I was just digging the vibe. Like I was like, that I like this. Um, there's. I don't know. It was cool. So, and then I started looking at his work and I was, you know, dude's doing some really cool stuff. So I thought it'd be a good, uh, and then having 174 followers, I thought, yeah, let's, let's sick the, uh, the other four people listening to this on him. So maybe we'll get him to 176. Yeah.
01:05:59
tyrellknifeworks
I like that K-tip that's on like 12 down or something like that, the chef knife laying on its side.
01:06:00
echo_blades
But, uh, yeah.
01:06:06
tyrellknifeworks
That's that's really smooth work. It looks good.
01:06:09
echo_blades
Oh yeah. Yeah. With the, with the texture.
01:06:11
tyrellknifeworks
No, the one above the texture.
01:06:14
tyrellknifeworks
At least on my screen pen.
01:06:19
tyrellknifeworks
But yeah.
01:06:20
echo_blades
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I see it. Yeah, good stuff. So go check out MRC underscore customs and show them some love.
01:06:32
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, so I got um Kevin Charbonneau at K dot.C underscore Forge. And he's just got some really cool stuff here. He's been doing a lot of Damascus. I see some some cleavers, um some kitchen utensils, looks like, I don't know if they're, kabob sticks or whatever, those look really cool. So yeah, a lot of nice work here. so Go give him a follow. um That's K dot C underscore Forge. He's got 1559 followers. um Yeah, give him a follow as well.
01:07:15
echo_blades
Yeah, definitely. He's a cool dude. I've been following him for quite a while. Sticker swapped way back when. Good dude does cool stuff and ah definitely go go check him out.
01:07:33
tyrellknifeworks
ah i am I am anxious to get back in the shop this week. it It's funny how crazy productive you can be spending nine to five in the shop, so I want to see if I can get that to that video posted this week.
Slotting a Guard on Hidden Tang Knives
01:07:50
tyrellknifeworks
That'd be my goal. If I can get those karambits done, I'd be very happy about that.
01:07:55
echo_blades
Yeah, it'd be cool.
01:07:56
echo_blades
Did you talk about the triple T? Cause I know that you did a little, uh,
01:08:00
tyrellknifeworks
A little bit. I mean, um I should finish the intermediate series in in this week's episode, but last week's episode was really just diving deep on slotting a guard and um and a handle and squaring up a handle, um which really, those two things I think are the some of the trickiest things to do for hidden Tang knives. So if you're making hidden Tang knives and you're kind of new to that process, go check out last week's video. It'll help you um kind of slot that guard. And, um you know, I am a big fan of the hammer, the guard onto the, onto the knife process and then um put the imprint of the ricasso into the guard. um I started doing that when I think
01:08:58
tyrellknifeworks
Before I was slightly before I started my JS knives and then, um, Michael Vagnino, my master Smith is like, yeah, that's, that's just the way to do it. Get a high speed rotary tool and, um, dig out the guard and, uh, you know, it's just the best way. And I agree. It's a really easy way to do it, especially if you're doing it on now. No, if you're, if your guard materials, like a non-ferrous material, like copper brass or something like that, then it's super easy. because that stuff moves so well.
01:09:29
tyrellknifeworks
But on this one, I'm doing a 416 stainless guard. So going the full way, um it's you know hard to file. And there's a couple little ticks and tips and tricks in there about grinding down one side of your file so that you
01:09:48
echo_blades
yeah i Yeah, that's interesting. You said that because I've known you a long time. And although I've not not done that, the hidden tanks, I mean, this this series is like almost geared for me. um I feel anyways, it's the area, the type of a knife that I want to do, but I just say I haven't got there yet. But I've never seen or heard anything about, you know, grinding that the one side down on the file or and and did you taper one too?
01:10:18
tyrellknifeworks
I've tapered one before um and kind of made like a... Yeah, like I basically went went corner to corner, like basically took it on a diagonal in order to...
01:10:28
tyrellknifeworks
um I forget the reason I needed it at the time, but... um But yeah, that's a really handy thing and you can. Yes, you can buy files that have a flat side, but.
01:10:39
tyrellknifeworks
I mean, I I I tend to have so many old files that grinding this to face off one is not a big deal. um And then just keep it especially when you're doing. slots for guards because you can you can never get you know once you drill the holes you can never get the file in there for quite a while unless you have a really thin file so um it's that's a good little tip to uh to do that yeah i mean um some some guys use those fortum tools i've never looked into a fortum and you know it's like
01:11:02
echo_blades
Right. And that rotary tool, does that have I mean, you mentioned. Not like a Dremel, you know, something a little.
01:11:22
tyrellknifeworks
The one that's got a little motor in hangs.
01:11:23
echo_blades
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the one I was considering, too.
01:11:25
echo_blades
Does the the rotary tool have attachments that I mean, any attachments go on, anything a Dremel can do? Or is it really for that precision type?
01:11:34
tyrellknifeworks
So the difference on the Fordham, they can do, I'm pretty sure you can get a different shank for them. That'll do like eighth inch burrs, like where the shank is eighth inch mine.
01:11:41
echo_blades
Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
01:11:45
tyrellknifeworks
Um, it's a 16th inch. So you can get slightly bigger burrs, but you are restricted by, it's only a 16th of an inch um shaft on those things.
01:11:57
echo_blades
i Gotcha. Okay, so you're not getting spin barrel sanders and shit like that.
Engraving with High-Speed Tools
01:12:03
tyrellknifeworks
no, no, no, no, not on that one. But um they you know that that that tool that I have spins at like 320,000 RPMs. It doesn't have a lot of torque because it's air driven, but it definitely has a speed and and for any kind of mean and wouldn't say engraving, I guess you're engraving, but you can write with it like a pen.
01:12:28
tyrellknifeworks
It's not like you ever try to write with a dremel and you're all over the place.
01:12:32
echo_blades
He looked like a left-handed monkey.
01:12:34
echo_blades
If you're right handed, your penmanship.
01:12:37
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, but on the GRS one, like any of those high speed tools, you can, you can write with it like a pen cause there's so much control. Um, so for doing exactly what I use it for, um, digging out the guard or any kind of, you know, that kind of thing, it's really good for that, but they're pricey.
01:12:58
tyrellknifeworks
But again, most people will go with the the Fordham style.
01:13:02
echo_blades
What is the price ish?
01:13:03
tyrellknifeworks
Uh, the one I have is five to $600.
01:13:09
tyrellknifeworks
I mean, you can get a forum for, I think the forum ones are like, well, I think they're even cheaper than that.
01:13:15
tyrellknifeworks
Are they 300? Oh, okay.
01:13:17
echo_blades
Yeah, you can get the Oh, God, what is that? Man, I can't think of the name of the site. Ali something my tripping.
01:13:27
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, Alibaba.
01:13:29
echo_blades
Alibaba, is that a site?
01:13:31
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, but that's a sketchy site.
01:13:33
echo_blades
Yeah, so ah yeah, but they have like a knockoff Fordham's from there that are like 100 bucks. I know some people that have had those and they've treated them just fine.
01:13:41
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah. But those, and I don't know anything about those, but I'm pretty sure those are motor driven, right? They're not air driven.
01:13:52
tyrellknifeworks
Cause the, the downside of the GRS one that I have is you need a compressor, you need a regulator, and then you need that. So it's not just the price of the rotary tool. You need a reg too. And those regs are like 80 bucks.
01:14:10
tyrellknifeworks
because it can't run, it can only run at 30 PSI.
01:14:10
echo_blades
or you need it.
01:14:14
tyrellknifeworks
So you have to um turn it down.
01:14:15
echo_blades
Yeah, not everybody. i Yeah, not everybody has a Jeff. So I got a bunch of regulators.
01:14:26
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, so.
01:14:27
echo_blades
Thankfully, they're
01:14:29
tyrellknifeworks
But yeah, I'm going to finish the triple T this week, um, just with shaping and shaping the guard, shaping the thing. And then I need to do the final sanding on the blade and the treatment of the, um, of the hormone. So I got to bring out that
Progress in Crafting a Knife
01:14:48
tyrellknifeworks
hormone on the blade. So that'll be the big thing in this week's episode and fingers crossed. It comes out amazing, but we'll see.
01:14:59
tyrellknifeworks
I'm still debating, do I want to take it up to the shiny mirror polish finish or not? Like um like what Trey does on the chef knives. I don't think I'm going to go that far, but i may I'm probably going to buff it. I'm probably going to attempt close to, I'm not going to go to 30,000 grit or anything ridiculous like that. i I have no desire to come that high on a bully. But um yeah, I'm going to go higher than I normally would.
01:15:30
echo_blades
Well, that's cool.
01:15:32
echo_blades
I can't wait to see it.
01:15:35
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I'm just after shaping the handle and shaping the guard, like, you know, you get to that point of the knife, then you're going like, Oh, okay, this is coming together. Now I'm excited about it. yeah I was excited when I saw the hormone, but now I'm really excited after I see the, you know, the handle material always sets me off. Like when I see the handle shaped and the guard and...
01:15:53
echo_blades
Same. It's yeah, it's a naughty, naughty feeling.
01:15:58
tyrellknifeworks
yeah but what That's the best thing you said tonight, that naughty, naughty feeling when you get close to finishing.
01:16:00
echo_blades
It is my, it is the business.
01:16:11
tyrellknifeworks
Oh, yeah.
01:16:12
tyrellknifeworks
So yeah, I want to finish that thing tomorrow and then on on to new stuff.
01:16:20
echo_blades
Yeah. Shit. It's a short week, man. I'm going to be gone. I was just thinking about, we should get together a bit.
01:16:27
echo_blades
Yeah, tomorrow, Wednesday, and then I'm fucking out.
Designing a Throwing Knife
01:16:32
tyrellknifeworks
Yeah, I got to think about a design for my throwing knife.
01:16:36
echo_blades
but Yeah, I don't know.
01:16:36
tyrellknifeworks
I have to do some research.
01:16:38
echo_blades
You just see that that Bowie's got Bowie's got me all pumped up. You know, it's my birthday in a couple weeks. Just saying. You're saying.
01:16:47
tyrellknifeworks
I'll send you a picture of it.
Conclusion and Farewells
01:16:57
tyrellknifeworks
All right.
01:16:57
echo_blades
Well, I think I've had enough of you.
01:16:59
tyrellknifeworks
The same.
01:16:59
echo_blades
I don't know about everybody else.
01:17:01
tyrellknifeworks
I've had enough of me too.
01:17:03
echo_blades
Yeah. So let's get the hell out of here.
01:17:06
tyrellknifeworks
All right, man.
01:17:23
echo_blades
And that's a wrap.
