echo_blades: Look, I just want to write off the bat. I want to just deflate this guy's big ass head and say that it was all rigged. Every bit of it was rigged. It was a setup from Rick and Dennis to take Jared down.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, you're right. It was a set up.
echo_blades: And it was this operation success.
tyrellknifeworks: ah

echo_blades: What's up, man? I haven't seen you in a while. How are you?
tyrellknifeworks: oh Yeah, it's been a long time. I had to spend the whole weekend with you.
echo_blades: I know.
tyrellknifeworks: oh It's good. Back to work today. ah you know
echo_blades: Get the fuck out of here with that. There's five people listening this week. Are you going to lie to them right off the bat?
tyrellknifeworks: ah Well, I had work to do. I got got really far into profiling, heat treating two knives today. I was very excited. So yeah, it's back to work, but I had already forged the Damascus last week.
echo_blades: Did you beat the heat?
tyrellknifeworks: So this was all inside with the air conditioning on.
echo_blades: Nice, nice. I know maybe people are tired of hearing about it, but it's back up to the surface of the sun again.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Yeah. I had to cut it because I had to actually get to my surface grinder. So I had to like cut down all those boxes and just standing outside for 10 minutes, cutting up boxes was bullshit.
echo_blades: Yeah, it was a hot weekend, dude. I, I'm just, apparently I live in a hundred degree weather, no matter where I go.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, it was, uh, it was a hot, sweaty weekend. Last week was so nice. It was, it was so nice and temperate last week. I got some forging done. I was very happy about it, but then it all went to shit on Friday, but I guess we can't complain.
echo_blades: Hmm.
tyrellknifeworks: It could be worse. I suppose.
echo_blades: Somewhere.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, somewhere.
echo_blades: Maybe somewhere, maybe.
tyrellknifeworks: So besides the part that I know, how was your week last week and what happened?
echo_blades: Dude, I had a great weekend. It was a short work week. Um, that's always fun, but I, uh, was talking last week that I had a ah golf tournament to go to in Reno and Um, I ended up taking off Thursday because normally for years and years, it's been a couple of years since I've been to this event, but normally, um, another, uh, company and ours would get together and we'd do like a little friendly, uh, warmup round before the tournament on Friday. And, um,
echo_blades: That didn't happen. So I yeah called up our buddy, Rick, who I intended and I intended I was going to hang out with this weekend. um He likes to golf. So I hit him up and I was like, OK, but you want to go out and hit some balls? And he yeah agreed. So we went out and had a had a blast.
tyrellknifeworks: so he He made it sound like it was his idea.
echo_blades: ah He actually Had mentioned it before, but I wasn't quite sure I could work it out because like I said, normally I already have plans, but yeah, we got together.
tyrellknifeworks: Alright.
echo_blades: We went out and golfed in Carson city, I believe. a really fair, flat, open course. And, uh, you know, when you golf with new people, you're, you're always, I am anyways, I'm always nervous. You're going to shit the bed, but I, uh, started off, I just blasted one right down the center of the fairway, probably two 8 ,300 and proceeded to golf a fairly decent round that day. Um, it was about like 95. It wasn't too bad. It was hot. Um,
echo_blades: There's no no wind this weekend at all. Like just still still dry and hot.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: And there's no shade in this on this course. um But we did the nine holes and then went back to his shop and finally got the tour of ah Rick's place. Just an awesome, awesome shop. It's like a knife maker's paradise in there. He's got everything.
tyrellknifeworks: he's got everything He's got multiples of everything, not just everything.
echo_blades: Yeah, multiple. Seriously, he's got the the knife makers shop paradise. I mean, it it just every time I turned around, I was like, oh, oh, oh, oh. But I had to go check in um to the hotel because the the event started in the evening, like five or six or something like that. So I didn't we didn't get to do anything, but got to hang out for a little while and play some golf. See a shot, meet his buddy, ah Mitch, cool dude. Um, and then went and started the, uh, the work golf event thing.
echo_blades: Um, like I said, man, that place, they put on a great, great event for everybody. Uh, great food and hotels. Awesome. And then I was all fired up for golf the next day. Cause I played pretty damn good.
tyrellknifeworks: where Where was the tournament?
echo_blades: Uh, it was that Red Hawk.
tyrellknifeworks: What golf course was the tournament?
tyrellknifeworks: Redhawk.
echo_blades: Yeah. So it was a beautiful, beautiful course, uh, two courses on it, uh, the Hills and the lakes. And we ended up playing on the, uh, on the lakes, but I was, I knew I was in trouble cause I have a, um, excuse me. I have a love hate relationship with like going to the driving range and warming up cause I'm not very good. So I feel like sometimes I waste all the good shots.
tyrellknifeworks: You're not very good. Bullshit, I'm not very good. you're wait you You're way better than not very good.
echo_blades: Uh, but, uh, I started hitting some balls and I started getting the yips and I was like, Oh fuck. And then I got in my head, but thankfully it's like a, you know, it's a, it's a best ball tournament. So it was cool, but, um, I really shit the bed on Friday and it was hot. It was hotter than it was Thursday. And I think I was, uh, tired from just being out in the sun all day, the day before I didn't, you know, yeah, seriously.
tyrellknifeworks: So you had a hot sweaty shit in the bed.
echo_blades: Uh, it was fun though. Great people. Um, yeah. And that event's really cool. Will Clark was there from the giants and, uh, you guys all probably know by now, my general disdain for the San Francisco giants so much that I hate the color orange with a passion. But ah Will Clark gets a pass from me. That dude's a freaking beast. Super cool, dude. Always telling great stories. ah He was there. Festus Azeali? Shastic Azeali from...
echo_blades: I am fucking that name up. I can't believe that. ah From the Warriors. um Was there... Basketball players are tall, bro. Like, I'm telling you, like, I know that sounds stupid, but if you stand next to somebody that's 6 '10", holy shit.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.

echo_blades: I don't feel small around a lot of people, but this dude, man, that was cool. Cause they have these celebrity holes. Uh, this one was over as like 170 over a water onto a, not an Island green, but you had to clear a bunch of water. And I, uh, hell of people around just like probably 20 people, maybe 10, sorry. Now they're really thinking about it, maybe 10 people, but Lamont and Tom Nelly from the the radio. Uh, the bone down here, they, uh, they MC the event.
echo_blades: So one of those guys, the littler dude was there. But anyways, I stuck that green and, uh, dude comes up to me and like, he's like, Oh man, nice shine. Gives me a fist bump and like a fist bump Dennis. it And it was like this to my, my fist is like, yeah, the basketball guy.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh, the the basketball guy you mean. oh Okay.
echo_blades: And I was just like, whoa. And he's just a just a fucking big dude, man. So that was cool. um Then proceeded to go back and sleep for like three hours after that. And then they have the big dinner um where those two guys get up and talk. They do a raffle. Great prizes. I actually got skunked this year. I didn't I didn't get picked.
tyrellknifeworks: So you got skunked all weekend.
echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah, literally all weekend fucking ass. But um so then it is out of casino, right? So I'm not a gambler. You a gambler?
tyrellknifeworks: Uh, yeah, I would say I'm a gambler. I like gambling.
echo_blades: OK, I know it's never never been my thing. Like to me, I always think about like, even if I spend twenty dollars, I always think that's a lot of tacos. Like I could have a lot of tacos with that money and
tyrellknifeworks: I mean, I'm not a crazy guy, but I'm not going in spending thousands, but I've, you know, I've sat down at a table with a thousand before.
echo_blades: good
echo_blades: Oh no, never, never, not even close. Like I think a couple of years back I did a, we had ah another work event in Vegas and I had my wife with me and I think we pulled out like 200 bucks. that was the for That was the first time I've ever used an ATM at the, ah at a casino.
tyrellknifeworks: But you weren't ready for the fee.
echo_blades: No, fuck the fee. If he was easy, dude, it's the, the, the, the amounts that they default to.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh, okay.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh yeah.
echo_blades: like I want quick cash, 40 bucks. They're like, at first one was like 200 bucks, you know, that up to like 10 ,000.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: Like it was crazy. Uh, that was a trip to me. Uh, cause you know, ATMs, you know, like 20, 60, 80, a hundred, 300, and you got to get special.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh.
echo_blades: You got to go inside to the bank, you know, not these, they were just like,
tyrellknifeworks: Well, you usually you go and it's like, yeah, it starts at 200 or 400, but it's, it's fucking 20 bucks to get. It's the tough fees are but ridiculous.
echo_blades: I don't remember the fees, but I do remember just being like, no, no, no, and a custom, custom, custom. just let me
tyrellknifeworks: ah
echo_blades: So, uh, well, I didn't do that this time, but, uh, so they, uh, part of the, the deal with the event is that you get a hundred dollar chip back from, uh, when you check in. So I was like, well, you know, shit, you know, a hundred bucks. This is great. I'll, I'll go try that. So, um,
tyrellknifeworks: And this isn't one of those, you got to play it in order to make it like, this is a hundred, but you can put it in your pocket.
echo_blades: No, no, you could cash the chip in. It's a hundred dollar chip. You could cash it in and walk away with a hundred bucks or you can go um lose it. And that's what I did. So, but I normally, I played ah ah before anyways, I played craps for the first time ever.
tyrellknifeworks: You played, would you play? Love that game.
echo_blades: And never like I think you and I were talking about it and it never like never dawned on me to like YouTube the rules. or like to try to figure out how to play it. I just, I just walked up to the thing with a couple of buddies from the tournament and the dealers really just, we got the first night I went in there 20 minutes, lost 60 bucks. It was like this, boom, gone. It was a shit show.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: And I, and I, I didn't get it. I still was just like, okay, whatever. So I was like, all right, I'm going to bed. That was an early night. And then the Friday night I was like, well, I got 30 bucks. I'm going to see what happens. And, um,
tyrellknifeworks: That's not enough to play, perhaps.
echo_blades: So I played for like two and a half hours on off that 30.
tyrellknifeworks: You got really, you had a good run, but craps goes in, in, in runs kind of thing.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: And, and, um, the best part about craps is that it's the most social game at a casino.
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yes.
tyrellknifeworks: Cause everybody is going for the shooter. It's not like at blackjack, you don't give a shit if the guy, you know, you don't want the guy behind you or the the anchor chair, the last guy to be an idiot and take a car to, he shouldn't have taken that would have busted the dealer.
echo_blades: Okay. That's a, that's a great point. Cause that's why I don't play with blackjack, right? Because I'll, I'll be down there and then I'll start feeling anxiety or something and then I can't count. And then I'll do something wrong and I'll piss somebody off and then I want to fight them.
tyrellknifeworks: Right.
echo_blades: And you know, I'm like, you know, this isn't fun, you know?
tyrellknifeworks: Like any other table, they don't give a shit if you win or lose, but it craps. Everyone wants the shooter to do well. Oh, unless you're a dick playing, then don't come lying.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: But you know, most people don't do that.
echo_blades: Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, I, I, I learned though to play the, play the, uh, the top part with the 68s and the nines and you know, and the numbers and the hard way and you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
tyrellknifeworks: The numbers. Yeah, yeah.
echo_blades: And so I started making money, you know, after I started rolling, but I had a roll for like, uh, I think I had the dice for like 20, 25 minutes or something.
tyrellknifeworks: That's amazing.
echo_blades: It was a, it was a good roll.
tyrellknifeworks: That's amazing.
echo_blades: There was a lot of happy people that didn't share. I'll tell you that. And I didn't make nearly as much as, as some people were, but yeah, I had the tables going, um was you know, it was cool, man. It was that part was fun. The, oh, the funniest part was my very first role. I threw it and it barely made it halfway across the table.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh, you bitch move.
echo_blades: And so the dealers, they scold me. They're like, yeah, they're like, Oh my God. So, you know, the four on on a short roll. And I was like, what the fuck does that mean? they're like He's like, big dude like you, man, you got to throw those dice. I mean, come on. So the next throw, boom, I fucking chuck them. They pop out the table onto the floor. I'm like, see? And then it started to get the hang of it. The dealers that were on the table were super cool. They were, they were a lot of fun. They were helpful. Um, it was fun at a good, at a good time.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: And then I ran out of money and ran out of money and went to bed.
tyrellknifeworks: And then lost it all Did you did you play roulette at all?
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: No.
tyrellknifeworks: No roulette Oh Different
echo_blades: I didn't, that's another game I didn't, I didn't get, I think, uh, you know, I didn't understand how they, I figured it out though, that everybody has the different colors. And then, but I, the one thing I didn't understand was the mark with the, the, the glass thing they take.
tyrellknifeworks: color Yeah, you thought they were just scooping chips
echo_blades: It's like I was mesmerized that this fucking dealer was like a freaking witch or something because the thing would, you know, hit the point. And then all of a sudden she just wipe all the chips off the table. And I'm be like, how the hell did you figure like? And then she's giving people back money and stuff. And so, yeah, I ain't the sharpest shit in the tool.
tyrellknifeworks: But like the one story I have about roulette I'm at, I'm in Vegas with a buddy's bachelor party.
echo_blades: I'll tell you.
tyrellknifeworks: Okay. These guys, ah these are all engineers. They're all software engineers and there's 18 of us. And even though these guys are all math guys, they know the odds. They love to find roulette tables that have like black, black, black, black, black, black. Like they show you the last roles and they want to bet on the opposite, even though they know it doesn't matter.
echo_blades: Yeah. Right.
tyrellknifeworks: So we get there and they want to bet on roulette. I don't like roulette, but they force me basically, okay, fine. So I take a $5 chip, put it on 23 and it hits. And I make whatever, like it's like 250 bucks or something like that. Cause I put it right on the number.
echo_blades: Oh, gotcha. OK.
tyrellknifeworks: Okay. Right after that roll, we leave. That casino, we go across the street to another casino, another roulette table. There is a wedding party, a bunch of guys, a bachelor party at a roulette table. And there is, and I'm not exaggerating, there is two feet of chips, at least 24 inches, maybe 18, 18 inches of chips stacked around 23 like it's the Empire State Building.
echo_blades: Oh, geez. Oh, wow.
tyrellknifeworks: And they're getting ready to roll. And I'm like, I got to get in on this. I put a $5 chip on 23 back to back rolls.
echo_blades: Oh, wow.
tyrellknifeworks: It hits 23. The casino must've paid out 10 grand. Not to me, but of all the chips on it, I've never, and I had 18 witnesses and they couldn't believe it.
echo_blades: Right.
echo_blades: Wow.
tyrellknifeworks: that Yeah.
echo_blades: That's awesome.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: That's a day that would keep me coming back.
tyrellknifeworks: That was, yeah, no kidding.
echo_blades: and so yeah I could see how people get stuck doing it, you know, like, because you're like, Oh, man, or and it's every time I was like, I think I should do that. And then it would hit and I'm be like, Mother, you know,
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, but this is the guy that got married. This is the same guy. He's, he's up like two grand for the weekend and we're on our way to the airport and he's like, I should just go put this on black. I'm like, no, fuck you. You shouldn't go put it on black. Put it in your pocket.
echo_blades: Yeah, it was a good time, man. I enjoyed it. I i think ill I'll do it again, you know, i I have enough. Oddly enough, I don't have any self control in any area of my life except for the loss of, you know, yeah, ah at a casino and the loss of potential tacos.
tyrellknifeworks: Except for money at a the casino.
echo_blades: It's really the driver, right? Honestly, so I had a funny, funny story, though.
tyrellknifeworks: the
echo_blades: So one of the guys that ah I was golfing with, um was, uh, we were just talking and, you know, um, about golf and cause I, I pretty much gave up, I used to golf like three times a week, minimum. I golfed a lot. Um, it's, it's my personality.
tyrellknifeworks: We've got time to go off three terms a week, man. Holy shit.
echo_blades: It was great. It was, but it was beautiful. I had a lot of balance in my life and it wasn't really balanced. It was all golf, but, uh, but I, um, You know, there are people, oh, are you still golfing? You know, nah, cause I pretty much gave up golf for, for knife making, right? Cause you can't be away from the family. And you know, like it's, it's a, it's a time commitment more than anything, right?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: Money sucked too, but you know, it's, you go out on a Saturday morning and you could spend five, six hours out there um on the slow night on a slow afternoon. Right.
tyrellknifeworks: Easy.
echo_blades: So that doesn't, that doesn't work for too long. Right. So, um, and it turned out great. Right. And I picked a. got into this and here we are today. But um so I was talking to the guy, it's like, yeah, no, I gave up golf for knifing. Oh, you make knives? Oh, you know, did the whole, um you know, share, Care Bear share. And he turned out to be a knife guy. And he's like, Oh, yeah, I just bought a nice knife and this and this and that. And excuse me, later on down the in the afternoon.
echo_blades: Um, he says, Oh, I said, I was like, you know, like so what else? I was like, Hey, you know, you have Instagram. I was like, Hey, you know, here, follow me. So I, I showed him the, gave him the echo blades account and he pulls it up and guy doesn't use as a personal account, right? Very little followers. It picks it up and he goes, Holy shit. I go, what? He goes, Jimmy DiResta follows you?" And I was like, yeah. He goes, dude, that is the biggest flex I've ever seen in my life. He goes, Jimmy DiResta is my idol and just goes off about like how, dure you know, everybody has their guy, right? And and I know DiResta is that guy for for a lot of people, right?
echo_blades: And and I was like, oh, yeah, I said, well, check this out. And I went in my pocket because we met him at Maker's Camp. And when I met him the first time, he gave me a card with his, you know, his name and his number. I was like, you know, give me a call any time. So I pulled that card out just to be an ass. You know, dude was like, oh, my God. And he was like, he was like all fanboying out on the thing. He's like, I can't believe you met that guy. And I don't get that very often, Dennis. I'd tell you, nobody thinks I'm cool. So and you get in that, uh, you know, nobody's ever done that when I said, I know Dennis Terrell.
echo_blades: So actually, well,
tyrellknifeworks: Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don't think Jimmy follows me.
echo_blades: it's par for the course. No pun intended, but, uh, it was pretty cool.
tyrellknifeworks: ah
echo_blades: It was, it was pretty cool.

echo_blades: I enjoyed it. He enjoyed it. We had a good time, but yeah, I felt like a little badass for a while.

echo_blades: So I have Mr. Jeremy Ballabol from 4194G. That is a 419 forging on Instagram. I believe he has a YouTube channel too. um ah it Small one. I don't know if he's active on it, but, um Jeremy has 1290 followers and he has been, I think he started making like a year before I did. Uh, so we kind of been on a, on the journey, similar timeline. And, uh, I've watched him, um,
echo_blades: you know, grow like we get to do with this amazing community. But I was just seeing him be a lot more active here in the last month or so. And he posted this knife the other day, which my volume is on. And it's absolutely making me mental. But he's got a nice ah chef knife with some um wood from Ryan Chad born knives, Ryan cochlea over at the hustle and grind. And ah I think it's frickin.
echo_blades: Badass piece, so I thought I'd give him a shout out.

tyrellknifeworks: So, um, I know Rick, I've known Rick for a few years, at least, um, Rick and I did our journeymen together. We, um, we're chatting back and forth. you know, about our knives before that. i So I've known Rick for a while. ah He's been here, I've been to his place. We've we've done a collaboration, that ocean sunset dagger. um The Damascus for that was a collaboration. We've done some Damascus hammers together. So we've we've done a lot of stuff together. So when he contacted Jared, like we talked about last week, I suggested, because every time Rick and I,
tyrellknifeworks: you know and Jared or whatever, get together. It's always like some big grandiose, let's spend 12 hours a day in the Forge. We wanted to relax a little more this weekend. So we wanted to pick something much lower key. um So we wanted to do this throwing knife project. um So well, we'll talk a bit more about that, but definitely go check Rick out at Rick Hall Knives. um um We were looking at Rick's, he did this um Turkish twist Damascus frame handled Bowie knife that is just spectacular.
tyrellknifeworks: Like the Damascus on this one is like incredible.
echo_blades: It's amazing.

echo_blades: Yeah, he does.
tyrellknifeworks: Copper Damascus for a project. I'm working on this karambit project um because just for really, it's just for a video. This is not a custom order or anything like that. i' I've spoke before that the karambit is this karambit. I've made karambits before.
echo_blades: It's your nemesis.
tyrellknifeworks: the Yeah, just I've... i've It's just coincidental that like the last three times I've screwed up a Kuma, I bill it. It was trying to make this Karambit video. So finally, um I know, yeah.
echo_blades: Why does that make my heart smile? It's beautiful.
tyrellknifeworks: um but But this time it worked out stellar. And I i think it might be some of the best Kuma I have ever done. So I'm really excited to see it. And then when I made the billet, um And today I'm looking at it and I was gonna make a pair of karambits from it. But because they're karambits and normally you would say, okay, I'll just make i'll make a billet that's whatever inch and a half wide and I'll just curve it. It's really hard to do that with a kumai. I don't wanna risk hitting it on the edge and having it delaminate. So I actually made a three and a half inch wide billet.
tyrellknifeworks: that is 18 inches long. So maybe, maybe yeah, it's it's a lot of steel.
echo_blades: That's a big billet.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: So I thought, well, if I if i make two karambits because they're kind of crescent shape, that's pretty much gonna use up that whole billet. And I mean, I've got that centerpiece, I'll probably save for um a folder. But then I ditched the idea, I made one karambit and I made a buoy knife. So I've got two knives coming out of this billet that I'm very happy about. But um yeah, and i this is the first time I've ever, and it sounds silly, but the first time I've ever lattered, because normally when I make kumai, I will put a pattern into the Damascus before I um layer it with copper as the cladding.
echo_blades: Is it cladding?
tyrellknifeworks: So I'll twist it, I'll do something with it.
echo_blades: Okay.
tyrellknifeworks: So in this time, after talking with Koi, Um, the way they do it, of course they get to some patterning depth and then they put a pattern. And so I ended up grinding in, cause I don't have ladder dies and I'll talk about that. Grinding in took me like an hour and a half on an angle grinder to grind in the grooves for a ladder.
echo_blades: Ooh, that does not sound fun.
tyrellknifeworks: It was not, it was not fun at all. My hands were like, you know, you use an angle grinder too long and like, uh, it was terrible.
echo_blades: Oh, I do.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: But the billet came out stellar, like so good that um I'm really, really excited to see what it looks like. So but.
echo_blades: So I'm following you, right? You blattered the entire billet with the copper in and then press that.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, and then pre and and then, yeah, and then went back in the forge and and drew it out, but and I was worried he was going to draw the pattern out too long.
echo_blades: Nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Nice.
tyrellknifeworks: It it came out perfect.
echo_blades: Good.
tyrellknifeworks: And this one's got double copper with 15 and 20 between the copper, um double copper on each side. So it looks, I think it looks really cool. You guys will see pictures. The buoys already sold. I haven't even made it yet. And, but I'm hoping to get the Cranbit video up this weekend. So we'll see, but I'm definitely making ladder dies for the press. That's probably in the books for next week or something like that. So yeah, that's that's the exciting part. um Also last week, and now you and I have been working on this this billet. Well, we worked on that billet. We made some ah basket weave.
echo_blades: What was our intended, what was our intent? Cause I was trying to think about it the other day and we were, we we had like ah this plan.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah Yeah, I remember what the play we were going to make meals
echo_blades: Oh, that's right.
tyrellknifeworks: knots and crosses pattern. And I ah totally own this when ah we were, we were trying to make C's, but the billet was square.
echo_blades: That's right.
tyrellknifeworks: So we, we knocked in the corners and then I got confused and then we back basically it so that yes,
echo_blades: I just want to say because this probably won't happen again.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah yes
echo_blades: I said Dennis.
tyrellknifeworks: yes.
echo_blades: I think Yeah
tyrellknifeworks: didn't say shut up. But ah yeah, anyway, so we ended up with straight lines on was like a little like a square thin billet.
echo_blades: yeah
tyrellknifeworks: So we couldn't really do anything with it. So I said, Hey, why don't we make a basket week? So so I have eventually we we had all these these bars, then
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: I cut them up into kind of inch and a half pieces, stacked them all up after squeeze squaring or for weighing and you know, all that stuff. And then stack them up and then split them down the center like a feather. And when we're at Rick's, cause I brought them and this, this is a big bill and I cut it in two and Jared gets half and I get half and but I hadn't seen what it looked like. And then we etched it at Rick's place and then i It was way better than I thought it was going to be.
echo_blades: It it is insane I Was I was very happy like I was like I was a great idea great save Dennis great save That's right man orange juice set of oranges Reese's pieces

tyrellknifeworks: yeah Just turning, just making lemonade out of lemons. Yeah, so my last week was setting up for the three builds that I'll be working on. so the buoy, the cramp bit and then I'm going to be making a a big dagger out of my half of this basket split. So I got some other plans.
echo_blades: I don't know what the hell I'll do. out if it's good We're going to get a lot of steel out of that thing now.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, it's it's what it's about an inch.
echo_blades: Oh, it took the bigger half.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, I took the bigger it. I saw didn't exactly cut it on a straight angle, so there's a bit of a ramp, but. um Yeah, it's like, it's it's about an almost an inch thick, right? Maybe seven eighths each side.
echo_blades: Yeah.

tyrellknifeworks: Maybe a little less, but yeah,
echo_blades: Yeah. Mine's probably a little over half, but yeah, I was kind of i meant to do a reel on the, on the reveal of that thing.
tyrellknifeworks: probably five eighths or something. but um But it's also an inch and a half by four inches. So it's it's a good definitely a good size knife. Yeah. yeah
echo_blades: It was bad -ass dude came. I was like, woo.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, i'm I'm looking forward to that. I already got in my head what I'm going to do with it, so I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag, but I think it'll be the cat's ass.

I think we were out in the forge by, I think it was like seven 30. We, he had the forge pumping and we we got going right at seven 30, something like that.

echo_blades: So I do have a story though that and when we were at Maker's camp and we started forging my, forged my first knife, I was telling Lawrence that I had a shit ton of 5160 and he was like, that's too bad. tyrellknifeworks: yeah. time I did the beginner series. I started with 51 60 and I would, I remember cursing myself for picking that, but I picked it because it's a common steel that and most people can use, but, uh, yeah, it does not forge well. So it's fun to be able to forge that stuff on the power hammer. So, um, yeah, I mean, yeah.
echo_blades: It was like cake.
tyrellknifeworks: I mean, I think we we were done forging in like was it 45?
echo_blades: 45 minutes.
tyrellknifeworks: It felt like 10, but that's all of us.
echo_blades: Yeah. hey All three of us, I think we were done would definitely within an hour, probably more about 45 minutes.
tyrellknifeworks: That's all three of us.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, so but that's not sharing and going back and forth.
echo_blades: We all had those.
tyrellknifeworks: I mean, I think if it was any one of us, we could have done it in 10 minutes like if that.
echo_blades: Yeah. And plus I've never used one. I mean, my forging experience is minimal anyways. And Rick was kind of guiding me through it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: and But it took a little bit, you know, you gotta not be a plus and kind of, you know, get after it a little bit. But once you start, it for me, I wanted to say this too, because I've, I've shared this a bunch of times, forging, It kind of baffles me, right? The rest of knife making, I'm not trying to be conceited or anything like that, but like the stock removal, you know, a lot of this stuff's kind of come natural to me, right? It's it's been more about ah conceptually anyways, right? I get it.
echo_blades: moving, forging with the hammer, especially on the anvil, like, you know, and knowing because you got to be like three, four steps ahead, right? to You hit it here to know and then you like kind of, okay, I'm going to end up over here by doing these couple of steps right there.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: Using the power hammer was, for my brain, super helpful to actually visualize and see because you're not waiting, you know, it's like you're it's it's instant.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, that stuff happens so much faster. You yeah you see it.

echo_blades: um He's like, okay, we want to You know, hit the, you know, we're trying to put the tip in, right? And I was like, Oh, okay. You know, and then he's like, no, no, like this fucking old damn tip was forged in and one heat. And I was just like, Oh my God.
tyrellknifeworks: But they're there're certain there's certain things like when he's saying that, oh yeah, if you hit it here, it's gonna bulge the end and then you don't get the fish lips.
echo_blades: Really cool.

tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, that's great on a power hammer.

tyrellknifeworks: You try that with doing a 5160 on an anvil. It doesn't work that way.
echo_blades: i Yeah, I don't have any reference to that, but I can see because I did we I use the hammer a few times and it was like yeah, it's lame Hammers are awesome.

tyrellknifeworks: Um, so Rick is in Reno and Virginia city, if you don't know, Virginia city is like, it was like a gold and silver boom town.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: And, uh, yeah, yeah.
echo_blades: Comstock mines. Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: So it's way up in the hills and now it's like a tourist. you know, tourist area, you know.
echo_blades: Street vibes or I think street vibes goes up there as a big motorcycle event a couple of times a year.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I had never been to Virginia city and so I thought it was really cool. We had lunch up there and had some pizza.
echo_blades: Yeah. Old West town. You got the wood, you know, walkways.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: It's all slanted and shit. You did. I think you said it, but I was like, yeah, you've kind of, you feel drunk just kind of walking down the down the the the road there.
tyrellknifeworks: Well, I had that Long Island at lunch. I was a little tipsy to be begin with, but, um, but that was fun.
echo_blades: Oh man.
tyrellknifeworks: And then, uh, we went back, um, and, uh, what the hell did we do after that? Uh, Oh, we, well, no, no, we did all the surface grinding.
echo_blades: We finished, we started doing the knives at at night. We've, we've. Oh, we were heat treating.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. We did the heat treating. That's what it was. And then we did some surface grinding and stuff like that, but we didn't really.
echo_blades: Now you ground the bevels in that night. Remember you were like.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, that was later, that was, yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: So we got to all that. um You know, Rick's got a whole separate grinding room, which is ah great. And the grinding room is air conditioned, which is awesome.
echo_blades: It's my favorite place.
tyrellknifeworks: um Yeah. So I'm grinding, I'm putting the, and the bevels on my throwing knife are like, like steep false edge kind of bevels. And I'm putting those in. And Jared comes in and I'm videoing my section and Jared comes in and goes, turn the video off. I'm like, what? He's like, turn the video off. I got to show you something. And then he throws the two halves of his knife on the ah on the rest for me to look at. Jared, tell us what happened.
echo_blades: Well, we, uh, the guys were a little ahead of me with, uh, the process and I had spent a good amount of time. So these knives have been heat treated tempered. I think we got them down to 56.
tyrellknifeworks: fifty six
echo_blades: Yep. I think it was 56 spring still, um, you know, both surface grinding on the platen, um, trying to get the. get it down ah flat enough to get on the the surface grinder and so went back and we threw it on on the surface grinder and it had a just an ever so slight warp like ah super faint but it was enough to
tyrellknifeworks: 56. Was it even a sixteenth of an inch bow?
echo_blades: It was so, it was so small. Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: you guys
echo_blades: But it was, it was just enough to not like the magnetic Chuck, you know, uh, was kinda anyways.
tyrellknifeworks: go
echo_blades: So Rick grabs it, throws it in his, uh, three point, uh, straightening jig and
tyrellknifeworks: Attached to his vice.
echo_blades: attached to his vice and gives it a crank down and corrects most of it.
tyrellknifeworks: Should have left it alone.
echo_blades: Right. And then we go back to the, we go back to the service grader and he's like, man, so we ain't no going back there. He gives it a fricking, you know, a Rick Hall, probably, ah you know, from, for us normal, feeble human beings, you know, it would have been all of our might, but he'd probably just give it a little too much and tank. that fucking thing snapped right in the half, right? Just like quarter inch past the ricasso. Like, I mean, it was, it was, it was so, it was heartbreaking.
tyrellknifeworks: it Well, it did wound him on the way at least.
echo_blades: Yeah, I got him. It's stuck. I'm pretty good actually too.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: Uh, but yeah, so my knife broke in half and, uh, we ended up having to, uh, doctorate up, uh, quite a few times. Cause it, uh, I never stayed again. We welded it back up and I had a, I had all the bevels ground in and it was, it was good. I was stoked. I loved the way that it came out. Um, and then it broke. So that's the first time that's ever happened to me. I've never, never seen it. Oh, the coolest part was the, the grain structure.
tyrellknifeworks: Oh, it was like powder.
echo_blades: was beautiful.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: It was like powder. Yeah. Like it Rick was I, and let me just disclaimer here. Rick was mortified. He was absolutely like, I could see it in his face and I was, I wasn't upset. I never, not even for an, uh, for a minute, but yeah, I could totally see he felt like shit, you know? So it was kind of hard cause he's, you know, he's a sweetheart, and no but he's a, he's an asshole too, just like us. So, dont don't get me wrong. I spent good part of the weekend talking shit and trying to make him feel worse. But you know, I really felt bad for a minute because he was just like, oh my God, you know, it was it was a thing.

echo_blades: I think Dennis was a paid him a shit ton of money. Like I'm pretty sure about it.

tyrellknifeworks: His logic was that, well, it's spring steel and it's down to 56. I'm like, what would possess you to put that advice and crank down on it and expect that it's going to bend and stin you know take its retain its shape? um Yeah, it would have needed heat ah for that.
echo_blades: He was convinced because he he was pretty confident, but yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Maybe if it was at 45, not 55, 56.
echo_blades: Yeah. I don't know, man, but it happened and I hope he got paid good.
tyrellknifeworks: Hey, you could still throw it. You just had to repair it a few times.
echo_blades: Yeah. So what ended happening was we, We called it a night, went to sleep, kind of, and then I went to, got up in the morning, went to breakfast, built the, ah you guys did all that because I was repairing my knife, the the target, right?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, built a target with some like rounds from, uh, just log rounds. He had cut off and put it on some ply way. It was actually pretty good target, except the rounds kept, you know, we were so split in part.
echo_blades: They were a little dry. They kept, they broke up pretty.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah. But.
tyrellknifeworks: But, uh, yeah, we drug the target over to, uh, a field and, um, and then we
echo_blades: Commence to learning that we don't know how to throw knives. I mean, that's the bottom line. Like and in all seriousness, that is harder than it sounds like.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, the one.
echo_blades: i i I'm humbled.
tyrellknifeworks: do Yeah.
echo_blades: But the fact of knife throwing is is not easy.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: And probably to like I said, we have no Dennis, you know, like you said, he watched the video and, you know, I guess Rick had had some experience, you know, but with some buddies of his that make throwing knives and stuff. And I had zero idea. I don't know. I didn't know if I had the right weight, if the length, you know, like I said, I kind of modeled it after one that I had seen, but No, there's plenty to be learned there in that row.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah I watched one video on how to throw like a no spin. So throwing a throwing knife without spinning it. And sounded easy.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: You're watching the guy in the video and he's throwing them from 20 feet and they're not spinning and he tells shows you in the video. So I get up there and I could not. If I wasn't more than four feet away from that target, that thing was spinning like a like ah something that spins.
echo_blades: A top?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, a ballerina. um
echo_blades: Oh, that's interesting.
tyrellknifeworks: ah Yeah, it was, and then I guess for a little while we all figured let's just throw them harder. Maybe they'll stick then.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: And, uh, I think that's when, uh, the weld, cause we were, we were launching these things from, I dunno, how far were were we? 10 feet, 10 feet, but we're hitting them so poorly and they're landing on the sides and they're hitting the side of the target and the side of the log that, uh, Jared's weld, uh, comes apart and his, ah your knife looked more like a boomerang for a little while.
echo_blades: Probably 10 feet. Yeah.
echo_blades: It did. I was like, I think this is toast.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. so
echo_blades: Yeah, one of them almost came back and got me and you you actually you were walking away. That thing came whizzing right past you, dude.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. And that's, but we were barely, maybe we might've stuck five of them at that point.
echo_blades: That probably would have stuck with our luck, right?
tyrellknifeworks: And I think we were throwing them for 20 minutes. Like we were not getting it. And then we finally all said, maybe we just need to slow this down and not throw them as fast. And then,
echo_blades: No, first let's let's get real here. We threw for a little bit, you know, maybe 10, 15 throws a piece. Mine broke. Then they sent me off back to the shop to go weld mine up.
tyrellknifeworks: but
echo_blades: Then they spend, you know, so yeah um by the time I'm over there doing that, they're just continuing throwing, continuing throwing. We come back. I started throwing mine a little again. It breaks again. I go back to the shop and re welded again. There's still practice, practice, practice. And then I walked back and they're like, okay, let's go. Let's compete. Let's start the competition.
tyrellknifeworks: ever No, it wasn't quite that bad. We we still didn't.
echo_blades: It was that bad.

tyrellknifeworks: we still the oh We still didn't figure it out until you came back and we slowed it down. And then maybe there was one time that you had to go and weld it again, but you,
echo_blades: yeah It was a lot, dude. It was, you guys spent a lot of time throwing them while I was welding. But anyway, at anyway, we went back, we we did it. And then I think, I don't remember the scores, but I hit a bullseye and then Dennis kind of won us to death and ended up winning.

echo_blades: I mean, we literally can get through so many different types of terrains and you know, uh, ecosystems and like sceneries from dry desert up in the high altitude down to the beach in four hours down anywhere else you can get that. It was beautiful.

I think we went through, what do we pass? Like six absolutely gorgeous mountain lakes with pine trees all around and rocky cliffs and like the, the stuff's in movies.
