tyrellknifeworks: No, you are. You pronounce it correctly. Tyrell, not because a lot of people say Tyrell.

echo_blades: Oh yeah. You ain't no Tyrell, dude. What's the matter with you?
tyrellknifeworks: And an even even larger number of people think it's my first name, so.
echo_blades: I have come across some comments when they go, Hey Tyrell.
tyrellknifeworks: like constantly, but hey, that's to be expected.
echo_blades: That's right.
tyrellknifeworks: How you been?
echo_blades: How are you? I asked you first.
tyrellknifeworks: I'm, I'm actually a little tired tonight. I don't know why I got a good night's sleep, but I was hammering away in the shop all day today and yesterday. So it's, uh, yeah, but, uh, yeah, things are good.
echo_blades: Nice, nice.
tyrellknifeworks: We did our camping trip over the weekend in the Sierras.
echo_blades: I'm I'm excited to hear about this. ah I was thinking about it today.
tyrellknifeworks: ah the The summary of that trip is that I'm too old for tent camping. That is the summary.
echo_blades: I just want to remind you when you said you were going to do this, I said why?
tyrellknifeworks: ah Honestly, it was really fun. um The only stressful thing is ah my wife does not like four by fouring and it is a two mile four by four trip to get in there.
tyrellknifeworks: And, you know, the Jeep and four low, ah she did not appreciate that. And I kind of didn't tell her that it was. But that's why it's such a nice included spot.
echo_blades: and
tyrellknifeworks: And it's a beautiful, pretty little lake. And I don't know if you saw the pictures on on Facebook.
echo_blades: I
tyrellknifeworks: It was really pretty. But the trip in there, she did not like.
echo_blades: did not.
tyrellknifeworks: But it was really nice. The
tyrellknifeworks: It was very peaceful. Yeah. and There was actually, it was surprisingly cause we're right between California hunting seasons.
echo_blades: Did you run into anybody?
tyrellknifeworks: Like there's, there's two weeks or a week, two weeks. It's archery season, then it's a two week break and then gun season starts. Well, those two weeks, like this is very popular for hunters.
echo_blades: everybody's out Everybody's out scouting.
tyrellknifeworks: Usually no one is out here.
echo_blades: Oh.
tyrellknifeworks: And, um, I was very surprised that we saw a bunch of guys in like side by sides. And then there was another, they were bikers. They were like, like bicycle bikers, um, doing the loop around the lake, which is bizarre.
echo_blades: Oh.
tyrellknifeworks: Like you gotta be hardcore, but anyway, they were the only people we saw. The only, the downside was that the dog was freaked out. It was cold at night.
tyrellknifeworks: There was some animal noises that freaked the dog out. The dog wanted to be in the bed with us, which is not very big, like on the air mattress, whatever. So then, ah yeah, I'm freezing.
echo_blades: Right.
tyrellknifeworks: I'm not sleeping well. So basically sleeping zero. So then we didn't want to do another night with the dog. So we ended up coming home Saturday, um, dinner time, but we went Friday morning.
echo_blades: Hmm. Gotcha.
tyrellknifeworks: So we had two full days there. So it was cool.
echo_blades: Yeah, that's, that's good enough. At least for an intro for her, you know?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, i if it if it wasn't for the dog, I would have definitely stayed Saturday night and yeah it was it was nice and fun and relaxing. the The only issue, to be honest, you know me, I'm not one to like just sit around and there's nothing to do there.
echo_blades: Sure and That's funny
tyrellknifeworks: Like, yeah, the lake's nice and, you know, But you can't do anything like there's no fish in that lake because it's like an alpine lake and So it's like oh tend the fire and use it. Okay. I'll make something to eat. Okay now what? so It got a little boy. We couldn't hike because the dog is um Molly, she's old and she can't walk very far.
tyrellknifeworks: So we did a couple little walks, but then she's tired. So yeah, so I was like, okay, now what?
echo_blades: I can see that you read a book or something.
tyrellknifeworks: So there's a lot of sitting around the campfire. Yeah, I'm not a book reader.
tyrellknifeworks: But yeah, it was fun. But I got back early and well, we got back Saturday night. So I spent the whole day in the shop on Sunday.
echo_blades: Nice.
tyrellknifeworks: So yeah, cause I got a jump on this week, which was good.
echo_blades: Nice.
tyrellknifeworks: What, uh, what did you do?
echo_blades: That is cool. I. What did I do? Saturday, I golfed.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: That was, uh, I had a golf tournament and dude, man.
tyrellknifeworks: Were you Shanky McShankerson or what?
echo_blades: and So I golfed my ass off on the front night. We played Tilden, which is a course in the Berkeley Hills and the first First nine is it's fair. I guess it's really hilly, you know, so there's not very even terrain. You're always hitting on some kind of an angle, you know, um, but I golf really fucking good for me anyways. Um, my handicap of these tournaments is like a 30 31 30 or something like that. So I ended up shooting them a 30 on the front with, with my handicap. So I think that was like a 44 45.
echo_blades: Um, which is pretty good.
tyrellknifeworks: Okay. Half of this doesn't make sense to me, but I don't know about handicaps and what all that stuff means, but okay.
echo_blades: So they gave you, they give you 30 strokes. So in a tournament there, you know, depending how shitty you are, they try to even up the playing field by no doubt throughout the whole, I got 15 on the front, 15 strokes given to me on the front and then 15 on the back.
tyrellknifeworks: So you actually got 60 is what you're telling me.
echo_blades: So you break it up, right?
tyrellknifeworks: Oh, I see.
echo_blades: But yeah. So I shot a net 30, which is. Um, I don't remember the apart, the bar thing, but it was somewhere around there.
tyrellknifeworks: 45
echo_blades: Yeah. About 45. So I was on pace to be around 90 or, you know, my best round ever is like a 87, 88. So I was playing pretty damn good.
echo_blades: I had like bogeys and a couple of pars, a couple of birdies. Um, And then they kind of like, they didn't mean to, but they kind of like got my, Oh, Jared, you're playing, you're doing great, man.
echo_blades: Just keep it up on the back. Oh, and then Jared showed up on the back nine.
echo_blades: Cause I was actually getting nervous that I was going to get started getting accused of being a sandbag.
tyrellknifeworks: See, as soon as it starts to count, that's when all the shit goes downhill. but
echo_blades: But dude, and then that course didn't help the back. The back nine was pretty tough. It's like sharp shooting and. And all of a sudden you just can't, you can't hit the ball anymore. And you're fucking just struggling and everybody was kind of doing, it was weird for whatever reason. There was all four of us. We were, when we were putting, I can, I've never had this happen. I bet you probably between the four of us, there was about.
echo_blades: no less than 12 to 15 putts that came up right to the edge and stopped. Like less than an inch to just drop in the hole and they would stop.
tyrellknifeworks: built a little lip around the hole.
echo_blades: I i think they did. Like there was something going on um because like there was a bunch of bad words and you know, so that didn't help. That's adding a stroke to to everybody's, you know, round and It even happened on the fuck. I was, I was ready to quit after like the 17th hole. Like it was bad. And then I would hit a shot and bring me back and I'd get excited again. But on the 18th hole, I, uh, I chipped in from like, I don't know, 20 yards out or something like that. And it did the fucking one inch to the hole. Like if it would have dropped, I probably would have, uh, took second in the, in the tournament and my group, but, um, it didn't. So.
echo_blades: But it was fun. It was, uh, for teeing off at 10 o 'clock. That's a like, just shoot your day. Yeah. It's like a five, six hour round sometimes, you know, that's like, I don't do it unless it's a tournament.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: I get out early, but, uh, it went, it went pretty fast. I think we were done by like three or something like that. So, but it was good. Beautiful day up in the, in Berkeley Hills.
echo_blades: It was cool. Um, just a lot of fun. I'm, I'm super. glad to be back golfing again, because that shit is fun.
tyrellknifeworks: We should go sometime, but don't count on keeping score if I'm there.
echo_blades: Yeah, no. That's the good thing about golf, you know, because you can play with at anybody and it's your own game, right? yeah It's not like rarely are you ever in competition with your buddies if you're just going out. I mean, there are people that, you know, take it serious, but That's not me.
echo_blades: You know, I get to about ah nine holes in and then I want to throw my clubs away and quit. So it's good thing I don't drink, man.
tyrellknifeworks: If, if, yeah, like I said, many times, if I'm not keeping score, then yeah, I'll hit it, hit a good shot every once in a while and that'll keep me going. You know, but other than that, I don't know that I could play 18 though.
echo_blades: Yeah. I.
tyrellknifeworks: We might have to play nine. I'd be bored at, uh, after nine.
echo_blades: Yeah, I don't know if there's any nines around, but yeah, we got to go out there. It's, it's a good time, but the tournaments are fun.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: I think I might join this group. It's like once a month. Um, the, the group is, and it's with Jeff and, uh, the club is called the 50th, the 50th state Hawaiian golf club.
echo_blades: And there's maybe one Hawaiian. ish kind of guy. So I don't know where the name come. It's, just it's a bunch of, uh, mostly retired people, um, that have been playing together in this group for, for years and years and years. But the the name, I don't know where it came from, but it's pretty fun. It's good, good group of guys. And once a month and they get out to all kind of different things and have a chance to make a little money, get your round back or something. I think I won like 18 bucks. I won three skins.
echo_blades: So it's not a quick, swift kick in the balls for for a Saturday afternoon, but that was fun.
tyrellknifeworks: Hmm.
echo_blades: I enjoyed it.
tyrellknifeworks: Hmm.
echo_blades: And I did all that without a driver. I'm still hitting only a three wood.
echo_blades: So.
tyrellknifeworks: I won't be using a driver if we go anyway.
echo_blades: All right.
tyrellknifeworks: All right. Enough golf talk. This isn't this isn't the golf.
echo_blades: For my golfing buddies, I'm only using a three wood. Just remember that.
echo_blades: But hey, it's the camping golf special. Get the hell out of here.
tyrellknifeworks: Right. Oh, ah one one thing in his knife related on the camping trip. So, a good and a bad, a good pocket knife. The only knife I brought, actually we broughtish ah we were brought ah a knife to cut up vegetables, but the knife I mainly use was the pocket knife that I made, went great, still sharp as hell, was whittling sticks with it, doing all kinds of stuff, turned out great.
echo_blades: nice
tyrellknifeworks: The hatchet that I made, when did I make the hatchet? Jeez, it's probably like, I don't know, one of my, It's many, many pages back in my videos.
tyrellknifeworks: It's at least three years old. It was the first hatchet slash ax of any sort that I made.
echo_blades: Nice.
tyrellknifeworks: Blade, perfect. Handle fell off.
echo_blades: Oh, geez.
tyrellknifeworks: but So I had to like hammer the handle back on. I i might have to put a new um wedge in it because it keeps coming out.
echo_blades: Gotcha.
tyrellknifeworks: I would imagine I didn't flare the the the thing like you're supposed to, which is why the handle's coming off, but live and learn, right?
echo_blades: maybe Maybe you should pin that post when you redo it.
tyrellknifeworks: Pin. Yeah.

echo_blades: That is bullshit. Everyone has a post that is badass and you want to show your your best stuff and you pin it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, but every time I look at yours, I'm like, why do I keep seeing this post at the top of your thing that I've seen ages ago?
echo_blades: you When you only have done one good thing, you make that the focal point. And many people have.
tyrellknifeworks: You know, I am not an IG person.
echo_blades: Oh, I was laughing. He's like, what are you pinning? What? I was like, good God, old man.
tyrellknifeworks: I don't know why I'm surprised because I could pin on everything else, but.
echo_blades: Yeah. Anyways, I've been meaning to say that for a couple of weeks now, but Dennis did not understand the pinning feature on Instagram.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: So. The guru is not so much the guru, the software guy.
tyrellknifeworks: Right.
echo_blades: um and on
tyrellknifeworks: i I'm the software guy, not the app guy.
echo_blades: Yeah. But, uh, yeah. So then Sunday I ended up, uh, I had Sunday slated for, for knife working and, um, I did a lot of it. I had a really good, successful day in the shop. I actually, for whatever reason, I don't know why this happened, but.
echo_blades: I was not bothered by text messages or phone calls, um, all week. Like it was kind of a really low key week. And then on Sunday at about like 10 o 'clock, like prime, um, I started getting some check -in calls, you know, wasn't the end of the world, but it was just like one after the other, after the other, after the other. And one of them actually was pretty cool. Cause, uh, you know, uh, talked to my,
echo_blades: my buddy Derek and and Brent and always good to check in. um But then I had a call from my buddy that I had checked in with when I was in Reno and I had took all the shit that I had with me that I had brought up there to show Rick and um the knife that we had done. And I was just doing a little show and tell because there's he's always got a bunch of people over his house and I was showing people some some chef knives and you know, this and this and that.
echo_blades: And then one of them ended up calling me back or he ended up calling me and said that one of the dudes was interested. And, um, so that 40 minute call was turned into a sale, an order for, for two, two knives.
tyrellknifeworks: Nice.
echo_blades: Yeah, I was stoked.
tyrellknifeworks: Nice. You're such a salesman.
echo_blades: So I just sell, sell, sell, you know, 50 % of the job is making it, and the other 50 % is about selling it. Yeah, I heard that somewhere.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Yeah.
echo_blades: So.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. I got to do more of that because that dagger hasn't sold yet. So I gotta, I gotta get that thing moving.
echo_blades: ah in And now I'll be the first to say it right now, I, again, i an unplanned, not a purpose, but I have just kind of checked out of social media and IG, just kind of like my maintenance stuff,
echo_blades: I'll post something here or there or, you know, make sure I'm checking the, the the podcast stuff. And, um, but it's been nice and, uh, I don't know how that affects us now because you know, Instagram is being a little bitch. Um, but the account's not growing. I'm still getting a couple followers here and there, but nothing crazy.
echo_blades: But I am having a lot of ah nice, stressful, or stressless times not obsessing on it. because there's I don't know about you, but when I'm into it, like that's all I'm trying to do. I get really wrapped up in what everybody's doing, what I'm doing, how my shit's doing, you know blah, blah, blah.
echo_blades: so
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, I mean, i I go in waves, like... I'm sure you do too, where like, yeah, I want to post something in Instagram and I checked the insights. And then it's like, I'm still at like, I'm lucky if I get 3 % non followers on some of the posts, I had one post that had like, I don't know, three or 4 ,000 views, you know, and it had like two to two or 3 % non followers.
tyrellknifeworks: So I'm like, okay, this, this is not my, uh, my sales pipeline.
echo_blades: Yeah,
tyrellknifeworks: My, not my mechanism. So.
echo_blades: yeah
tyrellknifeworks: I'm i just doing it for interest sake now.
echo_blades: but I think it's, yeah, I was gonna say, it's like, it's good to check in with the community and, you know, keep everybody up to date with some things that you're doing. And and I like seeing what everybody else is doing too.
echo_blades: So it's, it's good and it's bad, right?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: So, um, but, uh, Brent from Baldman Knife and Tool actually, um, collab with me on a couple of posts, because he's made some pretty significant progress on that collab that we're doing. I made a ah a twist Damascus billet that I took with me up to Florida. And with the way I wanted to do something with him. um So we designed a ah profile with some like features of my stuff and his stuff and
echo_blades: Um, he finally grounded out and did like a test edge on the billet and fuck. I'm super happy with how that, how that twist came out. That was the first one I've done on the, uh, with the twisting machine.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, it looks really good.
echo_blades: Those bands are tight. Like it's, i'm I'm stoked about it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, it looks really good.
echo_blades: So I should be getting it back here and then I'll, uh, I'll finish it up, uh, etch it and do the handle work on it, sharpen it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: And I don't know.
tyrellknifeworks: And I like the profile. I like the lines, like the grind lines and stuff that he did and the handle and everything looks good.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: I think that one will go quick.
echo_blades: Yeah. I hope so. I'm not sure what we're gonna do with it, but I don't want it. He doesn't want it. So somebody's gonna get it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, for sure.
echo_blades: But yeah, that was cool, man. i'm I'm super stoked about that. And yeah, so just work my ass off in the shop made some progress on some a lot of handle stuff.
echo_blades: Liners shaping, you know, trying to get ready for uh, finish up an order and then get the, uh, the maker swap, uh, knife that, uh, I want to take up there. Cause that shit's just around the corner and I'm actually starting to get excited now.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, me too. um It's ah like I put in my my notes. It's getting on. Oh, sorry. I said that up about the apocalyptic challenge, but both are getting uncomfortably close.
tyrellknifeworks: um The, but maker camp. Yeah, I am getting excited. And what what do you, I had a question down here. What do you bring it? What are you bringing to maker camp?
echo_blades: What do you mean?
tyrellknifeworks: Well, obviously bringing clothes and shoes and shit, but I mean, what, what other stuff are you bringing?
echo_blades: I'm bringing me. Yeah.
echo_blades: Um, I haven't really thought about it just the normal stuff. I'll bring a, a hammer. I do bring a hammer, but I also, I think I bought hammers the last couple of times I've been there too, but, um,
echo_blades: Yeah, I i haven't even really thought about it. You just kind of caught me off guard there.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, I think I'm going to bring, I mean, I'm sure Lawrence is going to have some steel, but I'm going to bring some steel. I might just throw together a kumai billet and, um, have one of those, um, to do.
tyrellknifeworks: I might bring some blanks. I did last year. I, I ground out a few blanks, um, just in my free time at the Broadbeck booth. And yeah, I'm.
echo_blades: You know, I, I, I'm the kind of guy that I will bring that stuff, but I don't ever really find myself doing those kind of projects, right?
tyrellknifeworks: like
echo_blades: I try to get wrapped up in all the things that are there that you can do. And then I want to spend my time kind of connecting with people and talking and bullshit. And then, um, cause I think I brought a couple blanks there last year too.
echo_blades: Um, and I didn't do anything with them, but it'd be cool to forge, you know, uh, a billet or something too.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, even even in the the coal forge, I know how you love coal forges.
echo_blades: I don't know. We'll see.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: um
echo_blades: Yeah. Fuck those.
tyrellknifeworks: I might bring a little ah piece of W2 and um throw that in the coal forge and forge a knife out of that and see how things go.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: But,
echo_blades: I don't know. I just gonna.
tyrellknifeworks: to
echo_blades: try to do as much as I can again, you know, we got to, the rain really messed us up last year with all the plans that we had to try to do other things, but I'm not even worried about it.

echo_blades: There's always plenty of shit to do, plenty of people to see and talk and bullshit and have a good time. um I do want to try to get some time with, the
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: forging, you know, just in general with, with the, with the experienced folk and tried to take advantage of those, those guys.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. And I definitely want to.
tyrellknifeworks: forge a knife while I'm there which is always fun but yeah I'm i'm excited about going
echo_blades: Mm hmm.
echo_blades: Cool.
tyrellknifeworks: um
echo_blades: Oh, that's so I had a follow up physical therapy appointment for my knee. Cause I started, I took off on that run. I had something about three weeks ago now.
echo_blades: and um ended up hurting my knee. So I went to a physical therapy appointment and they said, it's not really hurt, but it's hurt. So it gave me all those lame -ass exercises. I don't know if you've done physical therapy, but they have a way of telling you that you're hurt, but you got to do more exercises on shit that has nothing to do with it in theory, right? Well, they're like, well, you hurt your knee. That means you're you have,
echo_blades: bad quads or your glutes aren't strong and your, and your body's compass.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah all the surrounding muscles yeah yeah
echo_blades: I'm like, Oh yeah. So I'm doing these lame, less than masculine exercises at the house. And which to be honest with you, I don't know anybody that does them consistently.
echo_blades: So I did about 50 % of what they, you know, had me do. So anyways, I had to follow up appointment and I told the lady who was super cool. Um, PT person, whatever you call them. And I said, I'm feeling better. Uh, I'm and in a lot less pain. Uh, I still know that the knees hurt and I'm not looking to just jump back in it, but I said, I am going to New York in three weeks and I am going to run a 5k.
echo_blades: with my buddies. So I'm fully prepared to go there and re -injure my knee.
tyrellknifeworks: You'll be popping, I'd be profing like a tic -tac.
echo_blades: yeah yeah ah So she's like, are you asking for permission or are you just telling, I'm just telling you. Cause this is going to happen. I'm not going to miss out on that.
echo_blades: And hopefully it's, it's strong enough.
tyrellknifeworks: but
echo_blades: but
tyrellknifeworks: That's like going to the dentist and the dentist asks you, so when was the last time you've lost?
echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: And think and they harass you for not flossing I floss the last time you floss me that's when I lost I'm not doing it.
echo_blades: Oh, that's gross, Dennis. That's disgusting. Pause once in like at least before you go.
tyrellknifeworks: I'm i'm not a flosser.
echo_blades: Oh, it's disgusting.
tyrellknifeworks: I Brushed my teeth but flossing come on. That's too much work I'm gonna get it
echo_blades: I guess I would say this is a little different category, but I am doing a little bit of physical therapy in order to take advantage and participate in the run for it up there, which I am excited to go run with, uh, Fader and Brian and whoever else is coming up there with us.
tyrellknifeworks: You gonna keep up with those guys?
echo_blades: So I can run. I don't have any problem running. I'm a big dude, but I ran pretty, pretty regularly for a long time, no matter how big I am.
tyrellknifeworks: Wow.
echo_blades: Cause I've lost a hundred pounds like a couple of times. So, uh, you big Jared runs and littler Jared runs. but bigger Jared and older Jared hurt his knee. So that's where I'm at right now. But that's, ah i'm I'm stoked about that. I'm actually really looking forward to that.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, I'm, well, and we're not staying on site. So we don't need like the sleeping bag and all that other crap you have to bring if you're staying there. So that's nice.
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: I might be able to ice ice this knee actually for real.
tyrellknifeworks: So yeah, I'm right.
echo_blades: thatd be a That'll be a plus.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Cause we're staying in the house. Hopefully that hopefully the house is decent. um
echo_blades: and It's going to be.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, probably, but we'll see.
echo_blades: I'm not worried about it.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: Company will be great. That's all that matters.

tyrellknifeworks: Cool. um Yeah, well, I'll tell you what I've been doing in the shop. I've been switching off between there those six chef knives and that I'm trying to get done just for the holidays and um working on the apocalyptic challenge blade, which that thing's kicking my ass.
tyrellknifeworks: um I ground one bevel today because remember, it's heat treated.
echo_blades: Mmhmm.
tyrellknifeworks: It's a big blade for I haven't told people beyond you what it is. It's a big blade and grinding one bevel took me over an hour, an hour and a half to grind one bevel.

And those days are my super productive days, not the days where I'm up late doing podcast editing. So tomorrow probably won't be one of those super productive days, but, uh, you never know. echo_blades: How much time do you spend editing that?
tyrellknifeworks: ah it's It's not that I'm editing, it's like waiting um because it takes like a half an hour for it to upload. And if I have to physically edit it, which I do maybe 20 % of the time, then I download the pieces and I put it into, I just use the Mac software. What is it? Guitar, what is it? I forget what it's called, what the Mac software is.
echo_blades: GarageBand.

tyrellknifeworks: and And just edit. It's usually because I'm editing the volumes or sometimes I've got a cutout. If we have internet issues, I'm clipping things together. That's 10 minutes.

tyrellknifeworks: Speaking of honestly speaking, I've gone through all kinds of like technical things in the last week. I don't remember if we talked about totally ditched our DirecTV have been so upset with that.

echo_blades: of Comcast.
tyrellknifeworks: Comcast. yeah So DirecTV had a ah dispute with Apple and all of a sudden, was this a week and a half ago or something? Like maybe it's two weeks ago.
tyrellknifeworks: All of a sudden we lose ABC yeah ESPN, FX, and all these channels because they're owned by Disney and they're having a contract dispute. So Kim goes mental because she can't watch the football game because it's on yeah ABC.
tyrellknifeworks: Um, so she's mad cause she couldn't watch the football game. Uh, anyway, it went on. So, and then two days later, I get an email from direct TV that says we're upping your bill by $8 a month, um, rate. And they still, they hadn't even resolved the contract dispute. So I'm like, this is really bad timing for you to send out an email telling me you're raising my bill.
tyrellknifeworks: So drop them and then I'm hearing you, you know, yeah yeah although your internet seems up and down, but I'm on AT &T internet and I'm paying the same price as you for a tenth of the speed.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: So changed over to Comcast internet. Well, I will be. So that was my
echo_blades: Yeah. I don't, the the internet is kind of, it's frustrating right now, but the services was good. I don't have any, I just kind of, I've, I've accepted the fact that that we pay a lot of money for cable and internet.

tyrellknifeworks: No. Yeah, but I have it every now and again. I've had to reset my router four times in the last three days.
echo_blades: Yeah. I'm supposed to get a a gig, a download and Um, there, there's two parts to it. We have, uh, an Euro wire, uh, wifi mesh system. Cause our, I don't sound like a dick, but our house is is big. So the, the wifi extenders, but if you get the, the mesh system, it's supposed to make a complete, you know, it's the most efficient way to get wifi throughout your house. Um, but that system that I bought is from 2018. So it's not living up to the potential of the internet speeds that I'm getting now.
echo_blades: And it wasn't cheap then. So I'm kind of like, do I need to go up to the next, the newer model to help with the wifi? So it's, it's partly me and Comcast is just, it's okay.

echo_blades: It's not a horrible, but it's, it's not the best.

tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, I was, not that this is like the Geek Squad podcast, but um I was debating whether do i do I go and research and get my own modem and do all that shit.
tyrellknifeworks: And then I started looking at the prices of those things. They're like 400 bucks for a decent cable modem now. And

And so I told him, I was like, send me the knife back because I want to etch the cake cutter on it and I'm going to personalize it a little bit and give it a little spa treatment and

echo_blades: I have I have ah something cool happen. Uh, we have a listener question too. And, but I, you might remember cause you always listen intently to the things that I share with you. Um, I, ah I,
echo_blades: um, had started a knife for a customer ah a while ago and I ordered some stabilized redwood that I got back
tyrellknifeworks: Yes.
echo_blades: And I was not happy with the product that I received. Right.
tyrellknifeworks: Mm hmm.
echo_blades: So I ended up sending that.
tyrellknifeworks: I recall.
echo_blades: Yeah. I ended up sending that, um, a couple of pieces over to our buddy, um, Ryan cochlea, uh, Chad, one Ryan Chad board.
tyrellknifeworks: Ryan Chadward knife works.
echo_blades: And I've said, yeah, that's, that's a confusing one still gets me, but, uh, and he, he ran them through his stabilizing process because he makes. He stabilizes wood, um, and go grab yourself some of the, uh, if you're lucky enough to catch one of those drops, I got a couple of pieces myself.
echo_blades: Um, but that guy is kind of being very particular about wanting a redwood. He he lives up in the Santa Cruz mountains. Um, so there's, there's a lot of redwoods up there and he's, uh, actually lives in the country where he has access to a lot of redwood.
tyrellknifeworks: Mm hmm. Get it? Yeah.
echo_blades: Um, and he does. He makes big tables and, you know, woodworking kind of thing um on redwood. um So he's got a hard on for the ah redwood handle. And so I told him, I, you know, wasn't happy with what I got. And he's like, well, you know what? Let me, let me just give you some, some redwood and and we'll get it stabilized and we'll use some of that. So this has been going on for a while though, right? So obviously he's not in a huge hurry. um But I came to work.
echo_blades: last week. Yeah, last middle of the week. And there was a giant plastic bag and I probably have like 15, probably eight by four by almost like an inch and a half, two inches thick.
tyrellknifeworks: Wow.
echo_blades: uh, blocks of redwood. Um, so I reached out to our buddy Ryan and asked him if he was interested in helping me out, uh, stabilizing that stuff.
echo_blades: So I'm going to be sending some blocks out there.
tyrellknifeworks: Nice, and nice and dry.
echo_blades: Yeah, they are super nice and dry.
tyrellknifeworks: Nice.
echo_blades: It's really cool. Really cool. Um, patterns in them too. So I'm stoked about that.

tyrellknifeworks: Uh, it is, I love a good stabilized, like a nice piece of redwood looks. it It almost reminds me of like the red part of like an Amboyna, like he gets that swirly.

tyrellknifeworks: we're gonna We got a listener question you said, and I still want to talk a bit about the triple T this week, but what's our listener question?
echo_blades: So we got a message from a gentleman at Freeman Farm and Forge, and his question is, I am a hobby maker and looking to purchase a major upgrade. Currently I heat treat out of my forge and grind on a 1x30 and a 4x36 grinder. I'm looking to either purchase a heat treat oven or a good 2x72 grinder. Could you make a case for both of them or or one of them over the other. I want to start using stainless and but and i and would send them out for heat treat if I went with a grinder. So basically, he's we've all been in this spot as as new makers where we've tried to go minimal in on the dollars to to get started to see if it's something that we want to do and you find yourself at this
echo_blades: point where, um, you have some decisions to make, you know, do you get a heat treated oven or do you get a new grinder? What do you do?
tyrellknifeworks: Well, what's your answer? What would you do?
echo_blades: I would give both.
tyrellknifeworks: We don't, we don't all have Jeff, by the way, so.
echo_blades: Yeah, maybe you don't get to just ask your buddy to help you make a grinder when you don't even know what a fucking bolt or a wrench is.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. did I'm laughing because of what Jared did is get his friend Jeff to help him build a grinder. And then he bought, even he'd right out of the gate pretty much.
echo_blades: I bought the even he, before we started building the grinder.
tyrellknifeworks: so
echo_blades: It was, I didn't even know it was possible at that point.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. Right.
echo_blades: So, so there's some truth and some embellishment on that, but it did happen like that. So I did have that amazing resource, which I'm forever grateful for. it Um,
tyrellknifeworks: But what would be your advice to this guy?
echo_blades: I would go with a grinder, 100%, 100%.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, for sure. 100%.
echo_blades: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: The grinder is your workhorse. I mean, you can either send a stainless out for heat treat or just honestly just hold off on stainless. Um, you know, if you work work on Damascus or work on other items, um, you know, unless you absolutely want stainless, then yeah, send it out. That's that's easier. Uh, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck out of a two by 72.
tyrellknifeworks: every single knife, stainless or not, you're going to need the grinder.
echo_blades: first
echo_blades: Yep. Hands down. There's that is the, the must need the must have service.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah. And, and I'll go one further. I would say before the heat treat oven, um, get your two by 72 and there's a few attachments you're going to want. I would get the very first attachment you should get or make is a surface grinding attachment.
echo_blades: and I agree.
tyrellknifeworks: And then probably a small wheel.
echo_blades: e I might go the other way, but just financially. But it may all depends on what what what position you're in, you know, monetarily. If you can get them both, get them both.
echo_blades: because and I mean, mean, you got to obviously make sure that you're this is what you want to do and you're and you're into it, right? Otherwise, you're just throwing dollars out the door. But um I was of the mindset when I started that there was no fucking way in hell I was going to
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: be able to heat treat out of the forge. Just me personally, that process, that not knowing that it would have drove me crazy. Um, so, and I had a crazy opportunity to get a screaming deal.
echo_blades: So, but the grinder is hands down.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: If if I was to do it again, that that's what I would do. ah Things changed very dramatically once I got a two by 72.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, it just, and especially a variable speed two by 72.
echo_blades: And that's going to go, they even make those variable speed one by thirties, but there's something to be said for having a the ability to turn that bitch up all the way and no chance in hell you're stopping it, you know, and then bringing it down to zero.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, absolutely.
echo_blades: So you're not, you know, cause I think I had a two by 48 that had just one hall ass speed and all speed all the time.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, all speed, all the time. kind of
echo_blades: And on those one. Just even to 120. Oh God. That was a, that was a nightmare.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: Big difference from the one by 30 to that. Um, so yeah, man, but that's, that's what I would do.
tyrellknifeworks: yeah
echo_blades: Um, I think Dennis is on the same page. Uh, there's so many options for, you know, and price points on grinders. Um, you know, the DIY, the house made the revolution to the Rodbeck, Maribara and all the other guys, um, they all make great tools and.
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah.
echo_blades: You know, as long as you stick with those reputable guys, you know?
tyrellknifeworks: Yeah, can't go wrong with any three of those makes you just said.
echo_blades: Yeah, I agree. So.
tyrellknifeworks: Cool. Yeah, I mean, i think I think we've seen that kind of question before, um but good to circle back on that one.
echo_blades: Hmm.

So we did um installment two of the folder series where we started drilling our holes and doing the um the channel for the stop pin. ah So how did some ways to do that? That's probably the the really the only tricky part of like, if you don't have a mill, how do you do that section?
tyrellknifeworks: Um, so there's some, you know, you can, you can do it by hand with a file. You can do it in a drill prep, putting an end mill in a drill press, as long as you go really slow, take really small bites.
tyrellknifeworks: um You can get away with a drill press. um It's not great for your drill press. I wouldn't do this all day, every day, um but you can get it done.
tyrellknifeworks: I've done it on a drill press before. i My old intermediate series, I showed how to slot a guard whither with an end mill.
echo_blades: But you need a DRO.
tyrellknifeworks: um yeah it's You do need a DRO because you want to know how you know how far that end mill is going down. So it's a good idea to have a DRO in your drill press.
echo_blades: OK.

Remember the deadline. um I don't remember the timeline for you guys. I'm pretty sure it's the 18th and 19th. It's the Friday before. What's the Friday? So you need to get your your email, your entries into the YouTube KnifeMaker Challenge email. um And remember, your picture has to not only have your build, but you have to have what you started with.
