Snow Removal Work and Weather Challenges
00:02:54
RICK JAMES
We're recording this on Saturday, so I gave them the weekend off and get back after it Monday.
00:02:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice. Love it.
00:03:00
RICK JAMES
Did a lot hauling.
00:03:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Love it, love it. Yeah, we've been, we got New Year's Eve, actually. We got another inch and a half, pushed it off New Year's Day, and we got more coming tonight. I'm going out salting right after this is over to try and try and beat it back. I don't normally take that tactic, but I'm sick of this Minnesota shit, this half inch to an inch crap every two days. It's like, Jesus, give us give us a dump. Like, what are we doing here?
00:03:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Not even worth it.
00:03:31
RICK JAMES
Yeah, it's definitely Minnesota stuff.
00:03:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
That is quarter.
00:03:32
RICK JAMES
North Dakota stuff is more like a quarter, not an end, half end.
00:03:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
You can't even push it.
00:03:36
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we get like a quarter and it just blows around. So and we'll push it.
00:03:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's super dry. It is super dry snow, super cold. It's just, you know, it's it's a, oh, for here, for snowing, it's like 17, 18.
00:03:45
RICK JAMES
What's super cold? 82?
00:03:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hey, for here, cold.
00:03:51
RICK JAMES
Holy cow. That's frigid.
00:03:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
hey for here that's cold
00:03:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
it's cold enough but yeah it's been super dry there's no moisture content in the snow whatsoever it sucks but uh we're getting it it's i can't remember
00:04:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Who's getting all the big snow that everybody's talking about? Where's all the big snow out there where he's talking about some, is that New York somewhere?
00:04:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
mean we got 10 we got 10 the other day oh you're looking you're looking for lake effect that's uh buffalo rochester syracuse so all that area they're getting repeatedly pounded by the lake
00:04:20
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we should go there.
00:04:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
well shoot i mean if you can even get there at this point i think they got like four feet or five feet out there it's it's they're getting pounded pretty good and there you go yeah get the snow job snow cat on the road
00:04:33
RICK JAMES
Yeah, the snowcat, I can go anywhere.
Regional Snowfall Comparisons
00:04:38
RICK JAMES
Let's go. get a we low bar as far far as we can and then go.
00:04:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
awesome is that wrapped up yet
00:04:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
is it wrapped yet got the snow job nation wrapped
00:04:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh it's coming i have our own snowcat route rolling into sima in cincinnati snowcat
00:04:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh man yeah it's been good i can't remember though i literally can't remember the last december that we've been over 20 inches of snowfall without a nor'easter just bunch of little stuff
00:05:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you always talked about like, you guys only get hardly any snow before Christmas, but you always used.
00:05:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
We really don't. Historically, we haven't in the last 10, 15 years, but definitely not, you know, 20. I think we're at, what are we, 20, 22.8 and not one nor'easter and only one 10-incher, but most of them are between like an inch and a half and three.
00:05:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we've been pushing a lot of little stuff. It's different.
00:05:31
RICK JAMES
Yeah, like 14.
00:05:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got 14 inches, so we're in the lead. Yeah.
00:05:37
RICK JAMES
Doesn't surprise me
00:05:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wow, you guys average a lot more than we do.
00:05:41
RICK JAMES
me. 14 inches, 140 pushes so far. So we're good.
00:05:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
you go gotta love that hourly shit good stuff oh man so everything's good though
00:05:53
RICK JAMES
Really good. Yeah.
00:05:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good.
00:05:54
RICK JAMES
Yeah. good Had a good week with the boys.
00:05:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. So, yeah.
00:05:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
So well first episode of 2026. And we're going to kick it back to 25, actually. We talked with Scott
Expert Insights on Salt Spreaders
00:06:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Doner. We had him on.
00:06:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's an Ohio guy. And he wanted to talk salt spreaders. And we touched on it a little bit. But we did say we'd come back and revisit it. after the new year we'd get some guys on have a little panel discussion uh so we do have some uh some guys on to help him with whatever questions he has looking for putting together some bigger units uh than the normal you know two to three yarders that are out there so to help us do that tonight along with scott we have brandon riley of ladc and we have the tag team of ohio boys kyle martin of ud maintenance and dan zuber
00:06:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yes, they are.
00:06:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
uh so we got the boys in house um they all have they all have their own expertise with large salters uh dan knows a lot about what's uh what's out there and what's coming from a couple different companies so we figured put this crew together and if uh if we can help scott out then we will and that's what we're trying to do tonight but before we do that as always we're going to hear from team top gun and we're going to come back and do a quick week review and we'll get on with the boys
00:07:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, gang,
Introduction of 'The Cutting Edge' Series
00:07:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
we're back. So as we said, happy new year to everybody. Hope everybody had a great start to 2026 wrapped up 25. Well, uh, best of luck in the coming year to you and your families.
00:08:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Um, what else we got? We got storm, storm, storms. Everybody is still getting snow. It has not shut off yet. Uh, I think we're due for a little bit of a warmup.
00:08:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think, uh, I think it's coming maybe next week.
00:08:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Maybe some areas will get some, uh, reprieve, but,
00:08:19
RICK JAMES
I got the true weather report. We're good for the next 14 days, not a lick of snow in the forecast. So how'd that go for me last time too?
00:08:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
good yeah how'd that go for me with the the weather pros yeah what was that uh i think i got the yeah i got the email from the holiday oh we know you know your guys are you know traveling around the holidays know you need operators so you guys are clear from was it christmas eve to the second yeah you guys are clear no big deal i think we had 18 inches of snow that period of time so
00:08:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
These things are popping up.
00:08:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah You know what? They're popping up everywhere. Like, I don't think, I think we're, I think tonight is Lake effect, honestly.
00:08:55
RICK JAMES
Yeah. It's time to go. It's winter. It's winter. It's time to go.
00:09:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it is. It's good. Listen, we'll take it, man.
00:09:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
We'll bring it on. We'll take it. We're ready for it. It's a, the guys are all, they're all firing on all cylinders. I mean, shit, they're warmed up early this year. they got They got all the kinks and all the bugs worked out already in December.
00:09:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
So normally we're on maybe going into the new year. We're one, maybe two pushes going into the new year.
00:09:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, the you know, the last two Decembers have been good. um Keep hitting the like and subscribe on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and dropping reviews, guys. Like, you know, tell us what you like. Tell us what you don't like.
00:09:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, let us know so we can do better for you. New tumblers are in the store. right. Get your tumblers. We have coffee cup size and the big Stein size. So ah get whatever you need out of the Snow Jobs Nation store. It's stocked. Jeremy's got all the stuff in. You got more Carhartts, right?
00:09:55
RICK JAMES
Yeah, like it's reloaded.
00:09:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
the car heart shortage we were probably on our last load that we're going to be able to get right so you don't get them now
00:10:01
RICK JAMES
Yeah, the shipment just came in from, yep. Yeah,
00:10:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
we're just we're going to follow the salt conglomerate model just call shortage and jack all the prices up 30 it's 30 more per car heart because we're limited now see see that's how you do it that's it's as easy as that
00:10:08
RICK JAMES
it's with the salt, you know. ye Oh, that's what we should do. We should do that. Yeah, crank it.
00:10:20
RICK JAMES
I will give you my Venmo and you can Venmo me directly.
00:10:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, shit. So this is dropping on Monday. And on Tuesday, on Tuesday, we are dropping the first ever episode of a new series that we're doing called The Cutting Edge presented by Boss Snowplow.
00:10:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. ah The team at Boss has teamed up with the snow jobs. They wanted to do what you guys wanted. You guys filled out Jordan Smith's product survey there for storm equipment for 2025.
00:10:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah the contractor survey and your number one ask of the snow jobs was more episodes. Boss heard that they jumped on it. They got together with us and said, we want to help you do that. And they are, they're they're producing and well, we're producing it with them.
00:11:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Their own series called the cutting edge, where we're going to introduce you guys to snow professionals in the industry, as well as members of the boss snow plow team. And we're going to, tackle some topics and see what we can do to bring guys more education and help them make better decisions for their business.
00:11:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
And that's, uh, that's dropping on Tuesday. That will be boss's day to drop those episodes. And looks like we're doing what once a month in the winter.
00:11:33
RICK JAMES
It sounds like the next couple of months. Yeah, for sure.
00:11:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, definitely at least through the winter. And then we'll see we'll see what happens after that, how often we're going to drop them. And it's up to boss. But we thank boss for coming on board. First episode's great.
00:11:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
it was we We laid it down the other day with them, with the the team at boss. We had Katie Roll. We had Corey Jokala. And we had Mr. Liquid's Jordan Smith. And it was the topic was sustainable de-icing.
00:12:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
So probably not the topic for this crew tonight. That's probably the opposite. We got the Ohio salt shortage team here.
00:12:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
the all i were missed
00:12:11
RICK JAMES
It's South Shore is everywhere.
00:12:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
the ah The only guy we're missing is Sean. Sean handles the salt shortage for the Northeast.
00:12:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, oh, dude, I got a picture.
00:12:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm going to post it. I got a picture sent in from New Hampshire. You have got to see the amount of salt put down on this walkway on this strip mall. It's got to be three inches.
00:12:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
to be three inches literally of salt.
00:12:35
RICK JAMES
Is native? Is it native?
00:12:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Huh?
00:12:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's unless he's got properties in New Hampshire. I don't think so. But.
00:12:40
RICK JAMES
Would you put that pass, Sean?
00:12:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't know. I don't know. Probably not. I don't know if he'd be that bad. But yeah, i'm like, what the hell?
00:12:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
There's your salt shortage right there. That don't got to be salted the rest of the ah the winter. As long as I don't get any rain.
00:13:00
RICK JAMES
No, I saw your firehouse. That looked like somebody dumped a load of Dippin' Dots in front of you firemen out there.
00:13:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's, yeah, that's a whole different ballgame. That's when you have guys that are not snow professionals that just are put in a salt truck and say, go out and do this.
00:13:14
RICK JAMES
How many garbage cans did you fill out?
00:13:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Five. Five garbage cans. We shoveled up five garbage cans
Jeremy's Snow Removal Stories
00:13:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
full of salt off a 20 by 30 apron. It was pretty impressive.
00:13:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was crazy. Yeah, that was ah that was different. Definitely different, but... What else you got, Jay? You got anything else for the week in review, bud?
00:13:38
RICK JAMES
I had something, but I honestly can't remember right now, so.
00:13:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, there he is.
00:13:42
RICK JAMES
You know me, I'll just butt in wherever I want and change the subject.
00:13:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
to Fire it out there. ah
00:13:46
RICK JAMES
i just let stuff fly.
00:13:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Shit, too funny. All right, well, let's let's hear from our partners. We'll come back. We'll see if Jeremy remembers what he was going to say, and we'll get into it with the boys.
Exploring Salt Spreader Equipment
00:16:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
all right gang we are back back for the first time in 26 let's welcome back scott donor and to help us tonight with those questions brandon kyle and zuber what is up guys long time no see how we all doing
00:16:28
Brandon Reilly
How's it going?
00:16:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
no fidget spinners tonight right kyle
00:16:33
Kyle
Nope, I'm sitting on it.
00:16:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
no Atta boy. All right.
00:16:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. So Scott, you, we touched upon it in your last episode there about some salt spreaders and stuff. So why don't you tell the boys, like, what, what do you need to know? What do you want to know about the, the larger units?
00:17:04
Kyle
Scott, I think your mic's off.
00:17:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I think he muted. No, he's not muted.
00:17:16
Scott Dohner
Can you guys hear me?
00:17:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Now we can hear you.
00:17:17
Brandon Reilly
There we go.
00:17:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
There go.
00:17:21
Scott Dohner
All right, sorry.
00:17:21
RICK JAMES
Cricket Mobile.
00:17:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's all right. Don't worry about Happens all the time.
00:17:27
Scott Dohner
but yeah so basically just looking to standardize our fleet moving forward, get into something that we can just build trucks and it it works for our operation and what we're looking to do.
00:17:37
Scott Dohner
So we currently have, we have Boss, we have Hilltip and we have Truck Craft tailgate spreaders.
00:17:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
and okay
00:17:44
Scott Dohner
And I mean, they each have their own problems, but yeah.
00:17:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
that they do so you're looking you're looking to go how big with this with the spreader capacity boys have at it what's out there
00:17:54
Scott Dohner
Our biggest spreader right now is six yards. i mean, anywhere from four to six yards, really just keeping it in that range.
00:18:04
Brandon Reilly
I mean, I think if you're sticking with the six yard, the doing like an F650 with a direct frame, salt dog six yard with the liquid system, you can't beat it. Stick with a live hydraulic or ah not necessarily a live hydraulic system because now they're all attached to the trucks. um But it gives you kind of a a great option truck. The only downside is that when you're actually salting, you got to drop it down into gear one.
00:18:28
Brandon Reilly
to get the RPMs up, to get it to spread the way you want it to instead of where like a live system, you could just crank that thing up, turn the dial and let it go.
00:18:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Interesting. Kyle, what did you just build?
00:18:42
Kyle
So our last one is hydraulic. We built five of these this year. um The last one is all hydraulic. That's a buyer's eight yard. You could fit 10 in it.
00:18:54
Kyle
um We did that with a clutch pump PTO instead of a transmission driven PTO. ah The only difference between that one and other hydraulic unit I have is we did the new buyers. It's all consolidated in a one kit electric over hydraulic control system.
00:19:11
Kyle
And the controls on that, um as far as responsiveness and even just the, really the quality of the spread and and the timeliness of how quick you can change everything, it's top tier compared to the valves in the cab.
00:19:28
Kyle
And you don't have hydraulic lines in the cab anymore, which is awesome.
00:19:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:19:32
Kyle
The other ones are my other hydraulic unit is same exact spreader, a clutch pump as well, but that has the hydraulic valve in the cab. And then the other two are Helix, Snowex Helix's six-yard units.
00:19:52
zuber
Kyle, are your salt dogs auger or chain?
00:19:55
Kyle
ah Both of those are chain. Yep.
00:19:59
Brandon Reilly
The auger one is so slow. It's brutal to not do the auger. Especially on that size, like the 7.
00:20:05
Brandon Reilly
It'll take, if you left salt in it and you had to get it out, it you might as well just park the truck and let it sit for an hour and a half while it unloads. It's terrible.
00:20:12
Kyle
that's That's one of the best parts about the hydraulic and the chain is you can open that gate up, you know, 12 inches and you can empty 10 yards real quick.
00:20:17
Brandon Reilly
Yep. Let it fly.
00:20:21
zuber
Scott, do you want to go chain or you want to go
00:20:25
Scott Dohner
ah We have chain on all of our stuff currently, so I'd like to stick with chain.
00:20:30
zuber
Byers has a salt spreader that we're testing this year that's coming out from three and a half to six, and then it'll go all the way up to like Kyle's eight. It has dual augers in the bottom.
00:20:42
zuber
So they spin in unison with each other and you get the consistency of like a chain, but you get the maintenance of like an auger. There's literally two Augers is right at the bottom of the tray, and it's been the best spreader. We've tested for buyers in the last four years by far.
00:20:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
this is cleared information we're allowed to give out. This is the...
00:21:02
zuber
Yeah, I talked to Scott Moorman before I came on here. and We're good. He said to release it.
00:21:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
okay
00:21:07
Brandon Reilly
going to say, it's on their website for a couple. Like, the MDS system has the dual auger system set up on it versus the computer...
00:21:12
RICK JAMES
you know for What is it like a four inch auger? What is it? Six inch? Four?
00:21:17
zuber
They vary with the size of the spreader, but ours is a six yard with them and they've been insanely awesome. No problems at all three years.
00:21:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
And this this is the Pro Series?
00:21:30
zuber
That's a stainless series. Yeah.
00:21:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
i will
00:21:33
zuber
Yeah. It's a six yard stainless.
00:21:34
Brandon Reilly
this Municipality Series for Salt Dog is a pretty pretty good unit. The nice part is if you ever need parts, you can get them on Amazon. You can get them fast from anyone. I mean, I used to be a big believer in like Swenson and Hendrix and and all the big ones that the DOT uses. The problem is only specific people sell those parts. And if they're not open, you can't get them or they're always backordered where Salt Dog is literally everywhere.
00:21:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. And i I've said this before. Like, I think Salt Dog has a little bit of a stigma, whereas they produce two different lines of equipment. Like like what you said, the the stainless line, the ah the municipal line, that's some really good stuff. But, like, guys kind of think, oh, no, Salt Dog, you know, that's that's no that's no good. Those are those plastic things that, you know, nobody likes. They should really separate. Like, make it...
00:22:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't know, put it under a different name or something. It seems like they get a bad rap for that when they they make really good stuff on the on the heavier duty side.
00:22:35
Brandon Reilly
Yeah. I mean, we like the, we have a couple we have obviously the V Salters. We have a couple, i think we have two or three, six yards that are the salt dogs. Then we have one eight yard auger.
00:22:47
Brandon Reilly
That is no one wants, like i said, no one wants to drive it because it's just so slow.
00:22:52
Brandon Reilly
Um, but then we have the MDS system on the medium on M2 F750. Um, f seven fifty um And I mean, that thing is a beast when the bigger one, not the little, the little stay away from the electric one, the hydraulic one, the big one is a beast. Now it's expensive, but it, I mean, you could salt 40 feet in a spread.
00:23:14
Brandon Reilly
It's crazy.
00:23:15
Kyle
I was measuring with ours the other night.
00:23:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
breaking windows.
00:23:17
Kyle
Now, granted, this is on a post treated lot, but easily you're getting 40 feet out of that thing. No problem at all.
00:23:25
Kyle
And that's running, you know, 20, 20 to 30 mile an hour. No problem.
00:23:31
zuber
Scott, you want to go poly or do you want to go stainless? What what do you prefer?
00:23:36
Scott Dohner
i mean, we currently have all all poly. I wouldn't mind going stainless. I think that's a solid route to go. And as far as like price goes, I mean, what what price point are we in for the salt dogs?
00:23:51
Brandon Reilly
yeah There's a lot of options.
00:23:54
Kyle
I bought all mine on Marketplace. They're new, but just came across them.
00:23:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
You love Marketplace.
00:24:02
RICK JAMES
I bet you're scrolling it right now.
00:24:04
Kyle
No, I'm actually billing, but...
00:24:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:24:08
zuber
Scott, you ever heard of Bigfoot up by us, Scott?
00:24:13
Kyle
ah There's a guy that just bought some stuff from them, from some buyer stuff from them this week.
00:24:19
zuber
Now, Bigfoot is owned by actual buyers.
00:24:22
zuber
it's the It's just a mother store that they opened under the a different name, but buyers actually owns it.
00:24:29
zuber
So that's where we do our testing through. So if you were interested, i I know I could get you the best pricing possible just because we test for them. if you're interested in going that that route.
Cost Considerations for Salt Spreaders
00:24:41
Scott Dohner
Yeah, I mean, I'm open to it. i Two years ago, I spent, I think it was $24,000 on a hill tip. I mean, I bought it for the technology, so the technology, and it's great.
00:24:51
Scott Dohner
It just doesn't work over certain spread pattern and speed.
00:24:57
zuber
You want pre-treat systems on them?
00:24:57
Kyle
Here's the thing though.
00:25:00
Scott Dohner
It doesn't matter. We're not using it currently. It's something might get into in the future, but for the time being, no.
00:25:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
What chassis are you looking to put these on, Scott?
00:25:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
do you have anything in mind?
00:25:11
Scott Dohner
It would be 6500 right now with Chevy's, but I mean, I wouldn't mind buying a couple used Cattenworths or Peterbilt's.
00:25:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:25:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, Kyle, what'd you put them on? You put them Peterbilt's?
00:25:22
Kyle
ah Kenworth T370s and then ah Freightliner m two
00:25:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Kenworth's?
00:25:28
Kyle
But you'd be fine with a six yard and a 6500. I'd be do it. All right.
00:25:33
Brandon Reilly
I was going to say, we put six and sevens on the F650s or do a D-rated F750.
00:25:38
Brandon Reilly
My last seven yard that I bought from a Salt Dog installed was $29,000.
00:25:46
Kyle
Yep. That sounds about right.
00:25:47
Brandon Reilly
and not ah was three years ago. So take that, you know, obviously little bit.
00:25:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
So 65 grand now. we years ago
00:25:55
Kyle
No, I think that 30 grand range is a pretty good number for ah a six yard unit.
00:26:00
Scott Dohner
Yeah, I think that's fair. I mean, I think that's astronomical.
00:26:03
zuber
I mean, you're going to pay $12,000 plus for a three-yard VBX anyways.
00:26:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's pretty good.
00:26:09
Brandon Reilly
I built a a six yard 6,000 hill tip last year on f seven 50 and the hill tip was in stock. So I i think I got it for like 20. Um, and so I don't, a six yard, 6,000.
00:26:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
For how big?
00:26:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wow.
00:26:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
with No tech, just a spreader?
00:26:30
Brandon Reilly
I didn't do the bar.
00:26:31
Brandon Reilly
i did just the sidewalk treatment and the treat at the spinner.
00:26:35
zuber
Kyle, did you install yours?
00:26:37
Kyle
Yeah, we build them all in house.
00:26:39
zuber
So I would imagine the cost of it. You think around $30 with installation if you did it from somewhere else?
00:26:46
Kyle
There's just nothing to the install. So if you're going to put them on, you're putting them in dump trucks, right?
00:26:52
Scott Dohner
Yeah, correct.
00:26:53
Kyle
Do those, what do those have for their dump beds now? Are they electric over hydraulic?
00:26:58
Scott Dohner
Yeah, they're electric. Yep.
00:27:01
Kyle
So then your cheapest bet is going to be a clutch pump, which just mounts on the front of the motor, attaches to your serpentine belt. And then you literally, if you buy that kit from buyers, it's all contained.
00:27:15
Kyle
You have your hose that goes from your tank to the pump and then your return line. And then you would just have two lines going to your spreader. So, If you have a hose shop by you or you someone like PureTech, you know, a mobile hose shop, as far as the up fit on the truck, it's nothing.
00:27:34
Brandon Reilly
you're putting You put yours in dump trucks, not on the actual frame itself.
00:27:39
Scott Dohner
Yeah, ours are in Domchok's.
00:27:40
RICK JAMES
Kyle's on the frame.
00:27:43
Kyle
Yeah, the ones that we build are are direct frame mount. They just, they're bolted straight to the frame.
00:27:49
Brandon Reilly
They're dedicated salt trucks.
00:27:53
RICK JAMES
Zuber, on those on those buyers you were talking about, can kind a guide is can you add the wet kit, I mean the the wet system later, pre-wet later? Because Casey wanted to go pre-wet later.
00:28:04
Kyle
It's all plug and play, basically.
00:28:05
zuber
Yeah, it's all plug and play, yeah.
Benefits of Dual Auger Spreaders
00:28:10
zuber
i don't know, the dual auger awesome. I'm telling you, it is so sick, and it's so maintenance-free. Like he was like ah Brandon was saying, the big ones, the eight-yarders are terrible. I would never let anyone buy an auger big spreader ever, but the dual auger is definitely a game-changer for a buck.
00:28:26
Brandon Reilly
Or if they just put a door on it like they would a conveyor so you could open the door up and the auger instead of just
00:28:30
zuber
Yeah, it's so stupid. It takes like five hours to empty out an eight-yarder.
00:28:35
Brandon Reilly
It's so terrible.
00:28:39
zuber
yeah It is. It's terrible.
00:28:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, Jesus. Five hours. Holy crap. Do any of these have...
00:28:45
zuber
Brandon will tell you, honestly, at 10-10, it doesn't come out.
00:28:48
Brandon Reilly
I wasn't joking.
00:28:50
Brandon Reilly
We'd literally park it in the cell chat as it's unloading. The guy would be like oh, you're done? He goes, fuck no, I've been doing it for 40 minutes. It's not that.
00:28:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
any of these have cover systems for the tops?
00:29:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
don't know.
00:29:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
How come nobody's come up...
00:29:04
Kyle
What the fuck do you need a cover for? are You fucking empty within an hour.
00:29:06
Brandon Reilly
Our MDS has a normal like tarp system like a dump truck would because the MDS is basically a dump truck with a conveyor floor, rounded sides, and so it has a tarp you know that feeds over over the top like a dump truck.
00:29:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:29:17
Brandon Reilly
That's about it.
00:29:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
just something to keep the moisture off the salt that, you know, like you would think you would,
00:29:21
Kyle
You just gotta spread faster.
00:29:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:29:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah but you would think they would, you would think they would have some kind of automatic tarp system where you can push the button and okay, you're done loading.
00:29:25
Kyle
You got time for that.
00:29:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Boom. The thing unrolls and you're covered.
00:29:35
Brandon Reilly
I mean, we we tarp them, but it's it's terrible because there's so many sharp points on there.
00:29:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Keep.
00:29:39
Brandon Reilly
You rip through tarps water. You know, the grates on the top, it's all rough metal.
00:29:44
Brandon Reilly
Like, it just eats through tarps.
00:29:48
zuber
Now, Scott, would you change the rest of your...
00:29:49
Kyle
Honestly, though, I've never.
00:29:51
Kyle
I'm just saying I've never had a problem with. I mean, granted, we. blow through it so quick maybe that's why but i've never had a problem with not tarping them
00:30:02
zuber
Are you going to change over the rest of your fleet eventually and go like to all
Maintenance Tips for Salt Spreader Chains
00:30:06
zuber
one brand? Is that the goal?
00:30:07
Kyle
yeah the only reason i put those electric spreaders on those other ones because we already had them but we'll probably switch them all over to the the rest of them switch them to hydraulic
00:30:17
zuber
Kyle, since I'm talking to you, you have the Marauder like I do. that You having problems with them?
00:30:22
Kyle
Unfortunately. Yeah.
00:30:24
zuber
Yeah, they're terrible.
00:30:25
Kyle
They're fucking garbage.
00:30:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:30:26
zuber
Yeah, wanted to let Scott know the same thing. Do not get the Marauder.
00:30:29
RICK JAMES
Just be honest.
00:30:30
RICK JAMES
Just be honest. Don't sugarcoat it.
00:30:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, I'm trying, I'm desperately trying to hang on to my tornadoes as long as I possibly can.
00:30:38
zuber
du buy buy Buy marketplace ones.
00:30:38
Kyle
They're great. Yeah.
00:30:41
Kyle
they're They're so chintzy. I mean, you could literally hang on one corner of it and it'll flex the whole fucking spreader.
00:30:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
I love my and
00:30:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
really,
00:30:50
Kyle
Yeah, they're terrible.
00:30:52
zuber
And they spread to the they spread terrible.
00:30:54
Kyle
There's no consistency at all.
00:30:56
zuber
No, and the chute is a mile long. i've already smacked it off two aprons and bent mine. You have to get the shaft kit and then the charge 1,800. It was so stupid.
00:31:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:31:06
Brandon Reilly
Thank you.
00:31:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I guess I keep these tornadoes running a little longer than.
00:31:10
Kyle
Keep the tornadoes going. If you can find some strikers, old strikers, like, yeah.
00:31:12
zuber
Yeah. Yeah. I think Gene still got some strikers brand new.
00:31:19
Kyle
Yeah, they need to do something different with those things. They're just a tin can.
00:31:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
i don't know why they.
00:31:27
zuber
And they came with no flow gates the first year. My first four yarder had no flow gates and then they added as an option that you to pay for.
00:31:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you were you were full force? though You were...
00:31:35
zuber
yeah if you were 1-1, you'd have a whole clump hit the hit the spinner and then nothing for 10 seconds and then another clump.
00:31:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
God.
00:31:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's...
00:31:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
like god
00:31:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's ah
00:31:49
Kyle
To take those spinners off, you need like three people, a fucking crane, six hammers,
00:31:53
zuber
Yeah. They're 180 pounds.
00:31:57
Kyle
Yeah, absolutely terrible going.
00:31:57
zuber
Yeah, and two handles, one on the bottom, one on the side.
00:32:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
and ill See, I take the the tornado, I take the back off myself. I just did it today again.
00:32:05
Kyle
Yeah, and that's how the strikers were too, right? I mean, they're simple, but I'll do a...
00:32:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:32:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
That sucks.
00:32:13
Kyle
I've got a bunch of DMs asking about walk-arounds of these things, so I'll post one, and the one I'll show you guys... we put a cable system with like a pulley ratchet to roll the buyer's auger up so you can flip it completely vertical.
00:32:28
Kyle
And we've actually done deliveries with that truck where we'll back into a, you know, where we don't have height and we can back into a pole barn or something, open your gate up all the way and convey it out.
00:32:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool.
00:32:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what else are you running this year, Dan? you always got You always got crazy shit that you're testing out. What else is there?
00:32:55
zuber
It's just really the buyer stuff. Honestly, there's stuff I can't talk about.
00:32:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Oh, here we go. Here we go.
00:33:01
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you can. You got a mic?
00:33:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got a mouth and a mic. Talk away.
00:33:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man. Nothing new in the crowd.
00:33:09
zuber
I've seen some other brand stuff that's testing right now. I can tell you there's some brands that don't offer bigger spreaders that I've quote unquote witnessed out in the wild. So that's promising.
00:33:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's good i'm pulling out of them
00:33:24
RICK JAMES
Like what? What other brands? You don't have an NDA with them. Why do you care? You've seen them in the wild. You said you've seen them in the wild.
00:33:32
zuber
I have seen them, but you guys are sponsors now.
00:33:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh we don't care about that oh
Testing and Demonstrations Opportunities
00:33:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
man but anyway what else about salt spreader scott any other questions for these guys about or did they nail it for you all
00:33:48
Scott Dohner
I think I hit the nail on the head.
00:33:51
Kyle
Scott, you're welcome to come check these out anytime.
00:33:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
right cool
00:33:54
Scott Dohner
Yeah, sounds good. I'll have to make a trip up there.
00:33:55
RICK JAMES
How far are you from...
00:33:57
Kyle
He comes up here and buys steaks.
00:33:59
RICK JAMES
okay There you go.
00:34:01
Scott Dohner
About 50 minutes.
00:34:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, that's not bad.
00:34:04
zuber
You're like 20 from me, aren't you?
00:34:06
Scott Dohner
Yeah, we're in Hudson.
00:34:08
Scott Dohner
Right around the corner.
00:34:08
zuber
You come check out the Dual Augur whenever you want. I'll load it with salt and you can check it out and see what you think.
00:34:14
Scott Dohner
Hey, you want to go through my properties for me and pre-treat?
00:34:18
zuber
Yeah, go pick this salt up from Kyle.
00:34:21
RICK JAMES
You got to have a demo.
00:34:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go.
00:34:22
Brandon Reilly
It's in there.
00:34:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
other
00:34:24
Kyle
Bring your own salt.
00:34:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotta have a demo.
00:34:24
RICK JAMES
Salt with it, yeah.
00:34:25
zuber
Kyle, let me see all your salt is, Kyle.
00:34:26
RICK JAMES
Bring your own. er
00:34:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's funny.
00:34:31
RICK JAMES
Is that thing not on the market yet, Zuber, or what?
00:34:33
zuber
Well, they just put it in their new catalog.
00:34:36
Brandon Reilly
it's in there yeah it's on their website now.
00:34:37
zuber
yeah they just Yeah, they just put it up.
00:34:38
Brandon Reilly
trying to send it to you guys.
00:34:40
zuber
it's Scott sent me a message. He said it's three to six yard. And then the the bigger one, they already offered in the bigger trucks like municipalities, but Kyle, you know Brexville around us. They have a few of them.
00:34:57
zuber
They seem to work good.
00:34:59
Brandon Reilly
I mean, it's got to beat, you know, a chain, right? Chains, you have to take links out over time. We're like augers, you don't. So I can see that that part of it, but that's cool.
00:35:07
Kyle
I guess that's something to talk about for maintenance wise.
00:35:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah Go ahead. we bring it
00:35:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Bring it up and then stop talking?
00:35:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
go ahead. Talk about it.
00:35:20
RICK JAMES
Go ahead, Kyle. Talk.
00:35:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Is he frozen?
00:35:23
Kyle
Brandon was cutting out on my end.
00:35:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, all right.
00:35:26
Kyle
We're on a two-year rotation with all of our chain spreaders. I don't know if that's light or too light. I don't know. what the But after shoveling one spreader out, I said I would never do it again.
00:35:38
Kyle
So every two years, we just cut our chains off, put new ones on.
00:35:43
Brandon Reilly
Wow, that seems early.
00:35:48
Brandon Reilly
i think we're five years and haven't changed out of chain yet. I mean, we've taken links up and taking a came out, chain out yet.
00:35:55
Kyle
What are you putting on your chains?
00:35:58
Brandon Reilly
In terms of what? Like, minutes-wise?
00:35:59
Kyle
Like, are you oiling them or?
00:36:01
zuber
here Use motor oil.
00:36:02
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, as best we can. Yeah.
00:36:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
what do you what are you using?
00:36:06
Brandon Reilly
we just coat it with oil with just normal grease everywhere. Just fill it with grease. Let it run. They're rusty.
00:36:16
Kyle
what You don't take a tube of grease and put it on your chain. What the fuck kind of grease are you using?
00:36:20
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, we do. we We turn it on and you just sit there and run it and it runs through the...
00:36:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Kyle.
00:36:24
Brandon Reilly
That's all we do.
00:36:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
I was, was, well, I was filling salt.
00:36:27
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, we...
00:36:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Go ahead. Sorry.
00:36:29
RICK JAMES
take ah Take a tube and just squeeze it on there.
00:36:30
Brandon Reilly
You open up section where you can see you know the chain running and you just literally, we hold the grease gun right there and just hold it there and let it run through.
00:36:37
Kyle
That is fucking wild. Alright. I'm here for it.
00:36:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
we ah
00:36:42
RICK JAMES
See, you learned something.
00:36:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
We just, I filled salt bins earlier today off one of the tornadoes, and we fluid film it before anything. Fluid film the entire chain, both sides, middle, everything, and that shit is still slick, and we've been doing nothing for, what?
00:36:54
RICK JAMES
During the season? You do it during the season too?
00:36:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
We do a preseason before we put our first load of salt in it.
00:37:00
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:37:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
That chain, both sides of it, the linkage, everything gets coated. I mean, it's it's a lot of fluid film on it, but it's still it's still moist now. and still You can still see it on there.
00:37:10
Kyle
Are you not, you don't wash your chain during the season then? Or do you recode it?
00:37:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
we do but if we do we recode it yeah but right now we haven't had we haven't had enough time and it's been too cold and we don't have an indoor wash bay so we haven't washed it in probably five or six events and it's still the you can still see the fluid film on you know it's caked in salt but you can still see it it does it sticks right well it sticks right to it but it doesn't stick to the steel
00:37:16
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, we don't do that.
00:37:32
Brandon Reilly
I'm surprised the salt doesn't stick to the fluid film. Yeah.
00:37:34
Kyle
That's what I'm saying. We wash our chains like every single storm though, so I don't know. I don't think that would work. I don't think grease or fluid foam would work for me.
00:37:42
zuber
Kyle, are you using anything?
00:37:43
zuber
Salt off or salt away or anything?
00:37:45
Kyle
Yeah, we're we're a dealer for salt's gone, so we use the piss out of it.
00:37:51
zuber
I used to use motor oil, man.
00:37:54
zuber
Just pour it right down the sides.
00:37:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
They got that...
00:37:55
zuber
Never had a problem.
00:37:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
ro Romar has that Lubricil shit. at the That works pretty damn good.
00:38:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's just expensive. Everything from Romar is super expensive, but it works.
00:38:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, like, it's...
00:38:05
Kyle
I need something that doesn't stain my fucking stainless though.
00:38:09
Kyle
It can't be dripping all over.
00:38:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:38:12
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Looked like asshole.
00:38:13
Kyle
they well just stick I think we'll stick to the two year replacement plan.
00:38:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:38:20
Kyle
I'll sell you my two year chains.
00:38:21
RICK JAMES
You got to get Schmidt. You got to get Schmidt with belts.
00:38:25
RICK JAMES
You to Schmidt with rubber belts. don't to worry about it.
00:38:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go.
00:38:29
RICK JAMES
Those things are cat's ass. Nothing goes wrong with those.
00:38:34
Brandon Reilly
The conveyor or the old rubber track.
00:38:35
RICK JAMES
Oh, God. Yeah.
00:38:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they're also the...
00:38:37
RICK JAMES
Yeah. We still got the knobs on our fucking, and we ran millions of pounds of salt through
00:38:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're also the price of a house in the suburbs. No, that's 100% right, man.
00:38:46
RICK JAMES
But then again, we've had them for years and haven't had an issue either.
00:38:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
no that's a hundred percent right yeah
00:38:49
Brandon Reilly
it They're just hard to find.
00:38:51
Brandon Reilly
right There's no one really pushing them and selling them here. you got to find them at auction.
00:38:55
RICK JAMES
there you can You can get them in the States, but yeah, there's...
00:38:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Are there dealers for them here?
00:39:00
RICK JAMES
Who bought them out years ago? i there Was it Swenson?
00:39:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, they're not even around anymore?
00:39:07
RICK JAMES
I think Swenson.
00:39:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:39:09
RICK JAMES
I think Swenson might be able to get him through Swenson.
00:39:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Interesting.
00:39:17
RICK JAMES
I think that's who it was.
00:39:19
RICK JAMES
Yeah, those things are bulletproof.
00:39:23
Kyle
highway. You guys ever hear of highway spreaders?
00:39:26
Brandon Reilly
EB. ahibbi
00:39:28
Kyle
So apparently this dude hit me up on LinkedIn. He has a dealer across from one of our properties that we service. And one of our salt customers ended up buying a spreader from him last week. But he claims, and I could send you this shit, Scott, too, if you want to look at it. He has all these units on the ground there.
00:39:48
Kyle
Hydraulic. Electric, I don't know. I don't know anything about them, but they're on the ground here locally.
00:39:56
zuber
Jeremy, Myers bought Schmidt.
00:39:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's a shame.
00:40:00
zuber
Yeah, Myers did. Yeah, they acquired him. And Swenson.
00:40:04
Brandon Reilly
you you You mean Aibi?
00:40:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah, it's Glenson.
00:40:05
Brandon Reilly
Aibi? Aibi?
00:40:06
zuber
Yeah, yeah, AEBA. AEBA.
00:40:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's a shame. Sorry to hear that.
00:40:16
RICK JAMES
the I mean, those those salters are, have any issues. think we put maybe maybe a couple sensors here and there, but they're just rock solid. No issues.
00:40:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
well bet there are now
00:40:33
Kyle
Scott, I guess I don't have your number.
00:40:37
Brandon Reilly
Could you put it over the podcast for everyone to have?
00:40:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah send it in put it in the chat bar probably instagram anyway
00:40:41
Scott Dohner
I'll DM you. Yeah.
00:40:45
Kyle
ah How do we communicate? Because you're not saved on my phone.
00:40:52
Kyle
Must be via Instagram.
00:40:58
Brandon Reilly
I mean, obviously, one thing to think of too, is like with augers, you don't get the the undercarriage spill.
00:41:05
Kyle
Mm-hmm. That's the best part about them.
00:41:07
Brandon Reilly
the the conveyors, you'll get that. It just falls through all the cracks.
00:41:13
Brandon Reilly
So if you put it on a dump truck or a flatbed or anything like that, it builds up underneath and it's a pain in the ass to clean out.
00:41:18
zuber
Well, doesn't Boss have the...
00:41:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
called bonus salt.
00:41:18
Kyle
So we put a deck plates on all those trucks.
00:41:19
RICK JAMES
Now Schmidt. Now Schmidt.
00:41:21
zuber
he but Boss has pans on the bottom. They're panels.
00:41:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. And that's called bonus salt. When you're when your hopper's out you're on your last property, you got those three shovelfuls, that'll get you through, dude.
00:41:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
um Bonus salt.
00:41:38
Brandon Reilly
a sidewalk salt.
00:41:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. Exactly. There you go. y You always know you got an emergency five pounds of salt.
00:41:46
Brandon Reilly
I know with like the hill tip, it's got a poly plastic shield that you pull out and then everything just falls out and you can slide it back in for easy cleaning.
00:41:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:41:55
Scott Dohner
Yeah, if you're lucky, then you can get it back in.
00:41:56
RICK JAMES
Your heel tips are chain, Brenna?
00:41:58
Brandon Reilly
the um Yeah.
00:42:01
RICK JAMES
Okay, ours are all auger.
00:42:03
Brandon Reilly
My little one's
Best Practices for Salt Spreader Use
00:42:04
Brandon Reilly
an auger. My the six yard is a chain.
00:42:07
Scott Dohner
Yeah, you have problems getting it in
00:42:11
Brandon Reilly
and get it in
00:42:12
Scott Dohner
Getting the plastic back in after you pull it out?
00:42:15
Brandon Reilly
ah My guys haven't. They've been, that's, they pull it out. They wash it with the pressure washer and blow everything out and then slides back in, but it is brand new. don't know if that makes a difference.
00:42:26
Scott Dohner
I guess we just don't get it in right.
00:42:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, it is a mold, right?
00:42:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it ain't perfect.
00:42:35
Brandon Reilly
It's a perfect, it's a perfect fit.
00:42:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Oh, shit. Anything else with salt spreaders or we got to talk about sidewalk machines?
00:42:48
Brandon Reilly
Just stick with hydraulic and you'll be okay.
00:42:50
Brandon Reilly
I mean, if you're going to do electric, then stick with the hill tip.
00:42:53
Brandon Reilly
Don't go to anyone else for the electric. and especially at that size, if you're going smaller than electric is fine, but you're going six yard and above, I would stick with hydraulic.
00:43:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, he says he can't. He says the electric doesn't keep up with what he needs to do right now. Isn't that right? Did i misunderstand that, Scott?
00:43:09
Scott Dohner
No, you're correct. Yeah, that's, uh, so our Hilltip, like, I love the technology on them. I think they're great. I think they're built good. Um, but yeah, you go over a certain speed and it over the spinner over amps or whatever, over currents, um, over certain width on the spread, same thing.
00:43:31
Scott Dohner
And that's, uh, The whole reason why we purchased it was, a you could track your salt usage better and calibrate it and use pounds per thousand, whatever, however you wanted to do it.
00:43:42
Scott Dohner
And based off your speed, it would start and stop. So like our new operators, we could teach them and it was pretty like straightforward, dummy proof. But yeah, I mean, to use it on a smaller lot where you're turning and all that stuff and going into tight areas, yeah, it's a great spreader. But some of the wide open stuff that we have now, larger properties,
00:44:02
Scott Dohner
So you look down and you're like, shit, I wasn't spreading salt because it says spinner overcurrent. So it's just.
00:44:08
Brandon Reilly
Oh, well, that's the software problem.
00:44:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Really
00:44:11
Brandon Reilly
ah I was told that that's in the new update.
00:44:14
Scott Dohner
Well, ours has to go in.
00:44:14
Brandon Reilly
i just started doing it after they updated it where you'll be driving it it'll just randomly kick it off.
00:44:15
Scott Dohner
It's not working. turn
00:44:20
Brandon Reilly
And then you won't you don't realize that it's shut off and you don't know where it shut off.
00:44:24
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, I was told the it's ah it's ah it's something in the new software and they're working hard to get it fixed fast.
00:44:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
really
00:44:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Here's my problem.
00:44:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't want a fucking spreader that I have to ah update software on. Like, that's a problem for
Technology vs. Simplicity in Salt Spreaders
00:44:41
RICK JAMES
You don't like any technology, Steve.
00:44:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't want... No, really don't.
00:44:43
RICK JAMES
You got to flip for him.
00:44:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, let's keep it fucking simple here.
00:44:44
Kyle
You're not updating software on a hydraulic spreader, Scott. Fucking put it on be done with it.
00:44:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go. There you go. Yeah,
00:44:49
Kyle
And if you're worried about trackage, I mean, we use AccuSalt.
00:44:53
Kyle
They're simple. You can put them on there. They're cheap as hell and it'll do everything that you need it to do.
00:44:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
and what are they, like, 1,200 bucks? Yeah.
00:45:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah and They're pretty good, too.
00:45:02
Brandon Reilly
makes one too.
00:45:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
They're pretty accurate. Yep.
00:45:04
Kyle
They're very accurate and they're simple.
00:45:07
RICK JAMES
a Back in the day, we used to have our old um was a buyers on one of our top kick. It was like a six yarder. And we had, we put grain card scales on it just make so we can measure scar.
00:45:20
RICK JAMES
That thing worked on work. Fantastic. We used that for years. It was just, yeah, well, you know where I'm at, right?
00:45:24
Kyle
That's very fucking hillbilly of you.
00:45:31
RICK JAMES
It's the farm country, boy.
00:45:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
but he wants to fire. I don't like tech. like Backwoods.
00:45:37
RICK JAMES
They work great. I mean, grain card scale?
00:45:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm not, I'm saying that's stuff like that is awesome.
00:45:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like technology will fail you when you need it. Like I want shit that I can fix and that I know, you know, I don't have to worry about a computer problem.
00:45:51
RICK JAMES
Somebody else will fix You ain't gonna fix this, dude.
00:45:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, you'd be surprised.
00:45:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
You'd be surprised what you can with a wrench and just banging in the right spot. Yeah. on
00:46:03
RICK JAMES
Hey, i know I'm no mechanic.
00:46:04
RICK JAMES
It's, ah hey, throw the kill switch, throw back on, see if it works this time.
00:46:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. That's it.
00:46:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Tighten the hose. i've seen I've seen you tackle hydraulic leaks.
00:46:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
You had a metal plus for a year.
00:46:17
Brandon Reilly
The metal class.
00:46:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
my God.
00:46:20
RICK JAMES
was just sat and peed in the corner all winter.
00:46:28
RICK JAMES
i'll get ah I'll get a message from Mr. Green on that one.
00:46:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
but We didn't get any message from Maddie with his all his cutting edges fell right off. Like, holy crap.
00:46:40
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah, Matt didn't know. know
00:46:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's bad.
00:46:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was really bad. Did you see the picture, Brandon?
00:46:48
Brandon Reilly
I've seen pictures of Metal Plus edges falling off.
00:46:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Brand new.
00:46:53
RICK JAMES
The whole thing fell apart.
00:46:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
First 10 minutes of plowing on the first try.
00:46:55
RICK JAMES
Ten minutes was... this He set the thing down and just fell apart.
00:46:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Was it? That's
00:47:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
even worse.
00:47:01
RICK JAMES
He did. he had a brand new loader and brand new pusher and the thing just fell apart.
00:47:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, we'll have po well well we'll have to post that picture.
00:47:06
Brandon Reilly
That's the best way to scroll hard path right there.
00:47:07
RICK JAMES
Not... not Not on the, yeah, but it wasn't in the shop. was on because they couldn't find all the pieces. They couldn't even put it back together.
00:47:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, Jesus.
00:47:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's a shame.
00:47:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Man, that would be a bad night. That be a really bad night. That plow would be burning up in the parking lot.
00:47:32
Brandon Reilly
It's a good message to buy an Arctic.
00:47:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, geez. Like I said, I like simple. Keep it simple. um Scott, what what questions did you have about sidewalk machines?
Issues with Sidewalk Machines
00:47:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because these guys have a bunch of them, too.
00:47:46
Scott Dohner
Yes, I mean, same thing. that's We have the Boss SR Mags. that's i mean they've I love Boss. Boss is a great company.
00:48:00
Scott Dohner
They push out good products, but we have not had good luck with the SR Mag. Yeah.
00:48:06
Kyle
Oh, geez. No issues with them.
00:48:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, the original Snow Raiders? Yeah. you have the Kohlers or the Hondas?
00:48:15
Scott Dohner
Yeah, we have the callers on ours.
00:48:18
Kyle
What issues are you having?
00:48:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
What do you got?
00:48:20
Scott Dohner
Other than the engines being replaced multiple times and the starters. um
00:48:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Starters are a known issue with them.
00:48:25
RICK JAMES
Well, yeah, they they know.
00:48:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
they They're aware of that. They're working on that.
00:48:29
Scott Dohner
Yeah, that's I mean, they just throw codes constantly and they're they're not there when we need them to be. So we're trying to figure out right now if it was a dealer issue or if it was a boss issue.
00:48:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
And you had a you had a width restriction too, didn't you?
00:48:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
If I remember correctly.
00:48:45
Scott Dohner
yeah Yeah, on some of our stuff, i mean it's it's hit or miss. so We do have a decent amount of four-foot-wide sidewalks. um but yeah We also have some properties with some three-foot-wide sidewalks.
00:48:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:48:59
RICK JAMES
I think we touched touch on the mag stuff, ah didn't we?
00:49:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
We did. we we touched We touched on that stuff. um We definitely, I remember saying that the only 36 I know is the SSV.
00:49:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
um Anybody else got any other ones?
00:49:11
Kyle
i don't think there's anything else out there.
00:49:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, for 36.
00:49:14
Brandon Reilly
Isn't that green rhino thing 36? thought
00:49:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
The Rhino.
00:49:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, what's the new Scout? What's the new Boss Scout?
00:49:22
Kyle
I'm pretty sure those are still 48s.
00:49:22
RICK JAMES
Let's just get the blade, right?
00:49:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Are they really?
00:49:25
Brandon Reilly
were but I don't know that matters.
00:49:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
So if you angle them, they'd be 36.
00:49:27
Kyle
They're definitely not 36. Yeah, they're definitely not 36.
00:49:32
RICK JAMES
Oh, I went down the sidewalk the other day. It was by 42 with my V-plow on my pickup. just
00:49:42
RICK JAMES
I did. Hey, the old heavy half was doing work. The boys got a little carried away when they were bucking.
00:49:51
RICK JAMES
The boys got a little carried away when we were bucking the other night hauling and got some shit on the sidewalk.
00:49:56
RICK JAMES
So I had to take care of business.
00:49:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh my god, you were too much.
00:50:03
RICK JAMES
I'm not kidding. I can show you.
00:50:04
Brandon Reilly
I've been there, done nothing. That's why we put, we used to have a bunch of Jeeps running around with little ATV V-plows on them from Boss. Those would just hit city sidewalks all day long. Perfect. Perfect.
00:50:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think you have 36. You're looking at the SSV, the OG Raider. And like I said, I don't know what the new scout is.
00:50:25
zuber
34 that says the scout is.
00:50:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
34. So there you go.
00:50:27
zuber
Yeah, 34 with 34 on website.
00:50:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go. So we're the scout.
00:50:31
RICK JAMES
That's just a blade, right? The scout just comes with a blade.
00:50:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's just a blade. I don't even know if you can put a spreader on it.
00:50:35
RICK JAMES
Because I need to find something for a lot we just got here that our stuff's too big to go on. So I was going to talk to boss about getting one of those.
00:50:43
Brandon Reilly
I'm doing the same, but I was looking at just an original Snow Raider, not a Meg.
00:50:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
The scout.
00:50:46
RICK JAMES
mag or a scout?
00:50:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah the original snow raider i mean listen that that was a good machine like i i told them on the uh cutting edge episode i said if you guys made that with a v plow instead of a straight blade that would have you would have never needed the the mag honestly like you would have been you would have been golden there you would have still held a huge market share with the versatility of a v because you could have gone with like a 40 inch wide v so if you had it in straight blade
00:51:12
Kyle
And they weren't fucking 30 grand.
00:51:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, yeah, and that's another problem. But they weren't. Yeah, because back, I mean, even when they came out, when they were the newest, latest, greatest, I think the first one we bought was like 11, maybe, yeah, 11 or 12.
00:51:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
And that was with the exact path.
00:51:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
So was like, you know, now they're, I think, what, 14, 16, somewhere in that range.
00:51:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, I mean, the XactPath is an awesome spreader. That's a great spreader. the The channeling, how they don't let you drop salt on your frame or anything, you know, they have the the spreader has channels that drop the salt away from the frame.
00:51:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you're not, you know, damn you're not dusting the ah the undercarriage. um We had no problems The thing had more power than knew what to do with it. We put the five-gallon mounts on the back and kept those full, and that thing would push all day.
00:52:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
It just, we...
00:52:02
Kyle
And for a the other thing with the OGs was for someone that's dabbling into liquids or just trying to mess around with it, the brine kit's enough, you know, to do what you need to do.
00:52:12
Brandon Reilly
Disturbed.
00:52:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:52:14
Kyle
Yeah, it's not the greatest, but it's enough to to screw around with it and see if you really want to put the investment into it.
00:52:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:52:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. You change those nozzles out. That would be the only recommendation i'd I'd give you.
00:52:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Just change the nozzles out to a ah a higher volume nozzle.
00:52:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
But it was a great, I mean, that's an onboard.
00:52:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's an onboard liquid system that's coming standard. It's not an option. I mean, it's only what, 10 is a 10 gallon or five gallon.
00:52:40
Kyle
I don't know. Right.
00:52:41
Brandon Reilly
I just had it up, but ah I switched over to this the Scout because it's five... I'm looking at right now. It's five grand cheaper than a normal Snow Raider.
00:52:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's sub 10.
00:52:49
RICK JAMES
You have one, Brandon?
00:52:51
Brandon Reilly
no I was looking at buying one.
00:52:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, the Scout is sub 10 grand. So that'll put that Auric Rhino thing out of business. Because that's a walk behind Blade, and I think that's in the 8 to 8,500 range. So if I can stand on it and you know have 10, I'll take it.
00:53:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
at ten
00:53:07
Brandon Reilly
see. this The Scout's got a four-foot straight blade on it.
00:53:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
i'll take
00:53:11
Kyle
Yeah, that's what I thought. I didn't think they were 32. I
00:53:11
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, it's a 4.
00:53:14
zuber
It says 34 width at the bottom.
00:53:15
Brandon Reilly
It says, it says, but the machine 34.
00:53:17
RICK JAMES
Machine maybe, right?
00:53:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Maybe the width the machine is.
00:53:19
zuber
It Yeah. first Yeah, you'd be inside the wheelbase.
00:53:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you basically have to angle.
00:53:22
Brandon Reilly
So I'm assuming, obviously, if you angle it, you're going to, you know,
00:53:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, have to angle. I
00:53:27
Kyle
don't think you'd get down to a 36-inch walk, though, would you? Angled?
00:53:32
Brandon Reilly
I would take the straight blade off and put a boss V plow on it.
00:53:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
don't know if that's an option.
00:53:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, a six-footer. a
00:53:40
RICK JAMES
Might as well. Or just put on a pickup heavy half.
00:53:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
But no, if that if that original Snow Raider, if that had a V-Blade, even a small V-Blade, a 40, 42-inch V-Blade, that thing would take...
00:53:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
You'd still be talking about it. Like, I mean, they're great machines.
00:53:55
Brandon Reilly
We put one on 1585. It is the the best sidewalk machine in the world. We used hooked it up directly to the hydraulics and the and the machine and no more boss wiring, just straight to the hydraulics. And it's it's an absolute beast. People fight over the sidewalk machine.
00:54:10
Kyle
That's a bad looking unit.
00:54:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
That being...
00:54:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
That being said, if you're looking for like the boss OG Snow Raider versus the SSV with a V-Blade and the wing extensions, that you can't compare the two. the The SSV feels like you're driving a truck compared to the Snow Raider, which as good as it is, the Snow Raider is not an SSV. The SSV is a tank. That thing has more power than is probably safe, honestly.
00:54:38
Brandon Reilly
That's four times three times the price.
00:54:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
You can...
00:54:39
Brandon Reilly
Three times the price.
00:54:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
you Yeah, you can fuck shit up. well No, I mean, the buggy the buggy itself, if you're just getting a blade and you're not getting a sander or the salter or anything, I think you're like 16, 17.
00:54:53
Brandon Reilly
Why did I think they were like 30 something?
00:54:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, because they're 30-something when you get the blower, the broom, us the salter.
00:55:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know that everything Everything you add on with Ventrac is $5,000 minimum. minimum So you can start out with, say, $15,000 for you know the buggy and the spreader, but then you're quickly escalating as you start adding attachments. I think the broom and the blower are like $6,500 each.
00:55:17
Brandon Reilly
So does anyone know then? So the Scout is that one that you... So the original Snow Raider just comes with the blade. You can't take that off. That's a loan.
00:55:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:55:24
Brandon Reilly
So does the Scout... Can you take that blade off and put a broom on it or a blower? Or is that just the...
00:55:29
RICK JAMES
No, it's just a blade.
00:55:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, the Scout is a stripped-down version of the Snow Raider.
00:55:33
Brandon Reilly
Okay. So no...
00:55:35
RICK JAMES
But like you said, they put a V blade on there, that would be the ticket.
00:55:35
Brandon Reilly
I can figure
00:55:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
they could but i mean that goes again that would that would i think they wanted to come in under 10 i think that was the goal so to do that be as simple as possible
00:55:40
Brandon Reilly
ah can figure it out.
00:55:46
Brandon Reilly
I think can take the boss paw and put like a buyer's salt dog V-blade on it.
00:55:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
do it do it like dude let's do some kind of frankenstein shit yeah it goes
00:55:54
RICK JAMES
Well, you got the old, that how'd that Arctic V blade go? that
00:55:58
Brandon Reilly
let's start It's still a good sidewalk machine right there. if you don't mind, 13,000 pounds down your city sidewalks.
00:56:06
RICK JAMES
What are you running on?
00:56:09
RICK JAMES
Okay. Well, that's on a 244? I thought that was going on something smaller. Holy shit.
00:56:14
Brandon Reilly
ah They didn't want to shovel the city sidewalk, so we just made a small sidewalk machine.
00:56:20
Kyle
A small little sidewalk machine that's eight foot wide.
00:56:25
Brandon Reilly
The blade's perfect for the walks. which The machine sticks out a little bit.
00:56:29
Kyle
The fucking fire hydrants and the tree lawn trees, they're they're done, but...
00:56:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know what I'm forgetting about now that I'm thinking about it? The little egg home might be that might be about 40 inches.
00:56:43
zuber
That's got to be expensive, right?
00:56:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's very expensive, but I mean, what isn't in the snow?
00:56:47
RICK JAMES
I have to talk to Jimmy on that one. I don't know much about those. so
00:56:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, Sean was able to fit in the cab, so it's very ah roomy, but the Jeremy drove the big one around.
00:56:53
RICK JAMES
I can look it up.
00:57:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
He was ripping around storks with that thing.
00:57:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, I think, uh, I think you're limited in that 36 inch, uh, sidewalk machine thing. I was, I didn't think there was anything else out there, but these guys would know.
00:57:20
zuber
How wide is that little case one that like ECF has?
00:57:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh, Zuber, are you testing anything?
00:57:23
Brandon Reilly
I think it's very expensive.
00:57:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh, those are really expensive. Yeah.
00:57:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
75,000 each
00:57:28
zuber
How much are those pushing?
00:57:29
Brandon Reilly
Yeah. I couldn't believe it when we gave it.
00:57:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Holy shit. thousand
00:57:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
eat it
00:57:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
holy
00:57:34
Brandon Reilly
I, when I got the quote from, I think I've, Arctic gave it to me. I was like, Oh, just kidding. I'm not interested.
00:57:41
Kyle
Yep Yep, I thought our Avant was expensive until I seen that
00:57:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
75 grand. My God.
00:57:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's all.
00:57:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's really bad. Like that's really over the top bad.
00:57:54
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, it was... For a sidewalk machine, it's really, really bad.
00:58:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, that's like two thirds to a 321.
00:58:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
mean, i can buy i get my two for that.
00:58:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, kidding me? 75 grand for a subcompact little wheel loader. My God.
00:58:16
Kyle
Yep, that was upfitted, you know, blade and like a exact, or a, whatever boss's fucking exact path spreader. 75 grand. Yeah.
00:58:26
RICK JAMES
I'm looking up the egg home, but I'm not going to convert solid millimeters and stuff, and I'm not doing that.
00:58:31
Brandon Reilly
Thank you.
00:58:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. I told Jimmy that I'm like, you gotta get this shit in American man. Well, European metric crap.
00:58:40
RICK JAMES
We ain't going there.
00:58:40
Kyle
Those were outrageous too, weren't they?
00:58:42
RICK JAMES
Yeah, they were spendy.
00:58:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
they're not They're not cheap. They're definitely not cheap. I will say that.
00:58:46
Kyle
I think they were north 50.
00:58:47
RICK JAMES
Jimmy is going give me one.
00:58:48
RICK JAMES
It never happened. What the fuck?
00:58:50
RICK JAMES
because he knows my guys would wreck it.
00:58:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, they have a reputation, but i I honestly think he's selling them as quick as they're coming in. He got some, he sold five of them to some municipality somewhere. I forget where he was. a He had to call Patty Salmon and like like late night three-way phone call to try and hook one up, hook them up with liquids.
00:59:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
how much to do a system on these things well what's the weight what's the width was had to go through the whole ball of wax
00:59:19
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah, i remember and talking about that. Yeah,
00:59:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
so yeah i mean they're selling it's got to be the right yeah it's got to be the right fit like i told them that you admit your target is probably municipalities or large snow companies that are doing big campuses because nobody else going able to afford them
00:59:24
RICK JAMES
yeah they're nice machines.
00:59:35
RICK JAMES
Them and the, what it what's the other one?
00:59:39
RICK JAMES
Kind of competition a hole.
00:59:41
Brandon Reilly
I mean, if that would
00:59:41
RICK JAMES
What's the other? A holder, right? holder? A holder?
00:59:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
older yeah who bought ASV absolutely absolutely
00:59:46
RICK JAMES
Yeah, those things are ridiculous.
00:59:47
Brandon Reilly
just buy an ASV40. Buy an ASV40. going buy that caseloader, I'd rather have an ASV40. Yeah,
00:59:54
RICK JAMES
That's what Putsy's got. Putsy's on a few of our sidewalks. He's got a broom and blade for it.
00:59:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
those little ASVs are badass dude those are really cool yep they're comfortable as hell those ASVs are the most comfortable track skids you'll ever ride in just don't use them in a lot of sharp rock
01:00:00
Brandon Reilly
but they yeah guys love them for snow.
01:00:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
you'll cut those freaking rubber bogey wheels up in like two hours and they ain't cheap to replace we had one for a little bit what else anything else scott any other questions that we didn't answer or can answer for you with these guys
01:00:32
Scott Dohner
No, think we're good.
01:00:34
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:00:40
Kyle
Nothing podcast appropriate.
01:00:41
zuber
Scott, just let us know. You can come by and check it out whenever you want.
01:00:45
RICK JAMES
I want to hear about all these secrets Zuber has. That's what I want to hear about.
01:00:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
all the what all the secrets
01:00:49
RICK JAMES
All these secrets he's talking about. Let's hear it. He didn't sign an NDA for those other companies. Let's hear it.
01:00:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
are you still paving zuber oh i thought you were getting out of the game completely oh yeah i heard that last year
01:00:59
zuber
No, we're done for the year.
01:01:03
zuber
Yeah, I am. I'm done. Yeah, I am.
01:01:06
RICK JAMES
You're storm chasing, aren't you now? Aren't you storm chasing on Uncle Rick?
01:01:09
zuber
Yeah, me and Rick are going to start going everywhere together if we can. He's already been obviously out with Doyle last week. He was out there. He went to New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire.
01:01:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was a good storm for it. That was definitely a good storm for it.
01:01:21
zuber
Yeah, he got three sales out of it, so he's it's working.
01:01:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good. Well, I mean, that's the key, man.
01:01:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Let let guys see it work in person. And, you know, you can't argue with that. There's no...
01:01:32
RICK JAMES
and you know Uncle Rick carries some with him so if they see the person in the wild he'll leave it there yeah oh Rocco got one huh
01:01:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
He'll drop it right there. Yeah, he'll take it right off the truck.
01:01:39
zuber
He did. He dropped one off in New York at Rocco's.
01:01:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, he went to Buffalo?
01:01:45
zuber
Yeah, he stopped there on the
01:01:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Lake effectage. Yeah, they're getting pounded right now. I think south of them is getting it worse than Buffalo. but
01:01:55
Brandon Reilly
It's the best sidewalk machine right there.
01:01:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, my God. That's massive, Brandon. How big are these sidewalks you doing?
01:02:03
Brandon Reilly
Just city ones.
01:02:05
Brandon Reilly
It's like a half mile.
01:02:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
most Most people plow streets with that.
Salt Shortage and Supplier Challenges
01:02:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sidewalk. Holy shit. Oh, my Lord.
01:02:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
So nothing else? going to stay tight-lipped in?
01:02:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're no fun.
01:02:21
Kyle
You're a fucking pussy.
01:02:23
Brandon Reilly
How's your target fire looking over there in Ohio?
01:02:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep, no fun.
01:02:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
There is no pile.
01:02:29
Brandon Reilly
this Well, I know they went out of the salt game completely.
01:02:33
zuber
Yeah, we were moving clear lane today. We had a 5,000 ton order. Got 1,700 left for Monday to move. But the stockpile is gone, so they're coming out of the mine straight.
01:02:40
Brandon Reilly
That's nice think.
01:02:45
zuber
But they're not letting any customers have it. It's just cities and <unk>ip And ODOT and state.
01:02:51
Brandon Reilly
Yeah, they weren't even self-treated, clearly, in this year. At least they didn't give us so and our normal allotment.
01:02:58
RICK JAMES
What'd you, you got shut down too damn, Brandon? Yeah.
01:03:00
Brandon Reilly
Yeah. Cargill was the first one to send us our letter. Then Central Salt sent us saying, I'm down to my last 125 tons. And then Compass told me they're sold out.
01:03:11
zuber
Kyle, were you Morton's or Cargill?
01:03:14
Kyle
ah Kind of a mixture of both.
01:03:17
zuber
Cause Morton's is shut down right now too. They lost their main conveyor the other day.
01:03:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, that's bullshit.
01:03:21
Kyle
every Everything I got was was made in July.
01:03:24
Scott Dohner
how can be in
01:03:26
RICK JAMES
our conveyor broke down yeah whoopsie-daisy like him
01:03:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
You notice this shit only ever breaks in the winter.
01:03:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm calling bullshit on that.
01:03:37
zuber
Well, they had a freighter come in the other day for however many tons and it shut down the whole operation for two days. They don't run the mine. It just goes right into the ship. So. It's just, yeah, when a friender comes in, it gets priority.
01:03:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
What?
01:03:51
zuber
They fill it and nobody else can get it.
01:03:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Such a fucking scam, dude. Such a scam, man.
01:03:59
Brandon Reilly
said, at least you guys can pay more to get it. They're literally telling us we can't get it. There's nothing to get.
01:04:05
Brandon Reilly
have like 500 tons hand and that's about it.
01:04:06
RICK JAMES
Are you going back to sand? Are you going back to sand, Brandon?
01:04:10
Brandon Reilly
we have like five hundred tons on hand and that's that's about it And they maybe they they gave us the whole like, well, maybe after the holidays in like two weeks, like let everybody get caught up and maybe the state will lose some of your salt.
01:04:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, yeah.
01:04:24
Brandon Reilly
<unk> it Otherwise, you won't hear anything until ju you know January 31st.
01:04:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Miraculously, this is all to come back.
01:04:28
Brandon Reilly
And it's like, well, okay, January 31st doesn't guarantee anything. And the last time this happened, we didn't have salt for the rest of the year.
01:04:37
zuber
Kyle, are you going to keep selling?
01:04:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's crazy.
01:04:39
zuber
Are you going to slow it down?
01:04:41
Kyle
I've got a certain tonnage that I'm selling, and once that's once that's done, that's it.
01:04:47
zuber
Because they're not even selling to the public at a practice like they shut down realton supply to the public you're getting one scoop last storm and that was it.
01:04:55
RICK JAMES
i will i got three tankers and I will sell fire brine if anybody is interested.
01:05:00
Kyle
You cannot haul that across state lines.
01:05:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
highly agitated
01:05:02
RICK JAMES
We will have a preheated all the way there from exhaust right into the tank.
01:05:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh my god all right you know what let's hit some commercials real quick we'll come back i want to i want to tell you guys about a new scam that uh i uncovered with the help of a friend and i'll we'll get to that that's gonna be a good one
01:06:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right guys,
Contractor Challenges and Exploitation
01:06:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
we're back.
01:06:28
Brandon Reilly
Thank you.
01:06:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
So as we just teased, we had an interesting situation locally um about a month ago. Jeremy knows about it, but... I've been doing some you know some digging where I can and where who will talk to me about it. So we had some national chains of of different you know brands and stuff that sites now into mid-December did not have a snow contractor. And we we were like three, four, five pushes in to the season. And these guys did still did not have a snow contractor that had the contract yet.
01:07:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
And when we were asking about, you know, who did it last year, we found one guy that did one of these locations last year. He goes, I said, how much how much was it? He goes, 22. I said, why didn't you do it this year? He goes, because this year, new new management company has these locations. They offered it to me at seven.
01:07:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I told him, go kick rocks. So the first three snowstorms of the year, they did not have a contractor. Nobody would take the contract, obviously. who Who the fuck would take it at seven?
01:07:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
But they were paying emergency removals a day or two after the storm to get these sites cleared.
01:07:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
And when I found out what they were paying guys, they were paying guys like $1,500 to clear the site. um And I couldn't figure it out. I'm like, well, what? This makes no sense. Like, get somebody in there. Are they just being lowball assholes or what?
01:07:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I talked to a property management friend of mine who told me their whole scam. It's like, this is literally what some regional, smaller regionals and stuff. They're getting these 10, 15 locations of these national chains and they're low balling. They're putting a low ball contract out there. If somebody is dumb enough to take it, then great. But they figured out that they're getting paid from the, from the, the, the customer they're getting paid November and December. So say it's a $50,000 contract for the year.
01:08:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
they're getting for five months five month contract, they're getting 10 grand a month. So in November, if if they don't give the contract to anybody, they don't have to pay anybody. They keep that 10,000.
01:08:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
December, maybe that area sees one or two snow events. They get 10,000 more. If they get one or two snow events and they can get somebody to clear that site for 1,500 bucks, even if it happens twice, they're still making seven grand that month.
01:08:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
without hiring a contractor. So they're just doing this. They're doing this across the board. The one management company that we found out has two different chains in in our town.
01:08:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a company from not around here. It's a you know a regional regional broker, and they have numerous locations. But he said this is what they're doing. This is what a lot of them are doing, where they're just lowballing the contract ridiculously. If somebody's dumb enough to take it, then they give it to them. If they're not...
01:09:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
They just know that it's now cheaper to pay the emergency rate to get it cleared up by some local guy who thinks he's making a ah big amount of money, $1,500 or whatever, for two, three hours work.
01:09:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's loving it. But what he's not understanding is these guys are taking the lion's share of the money, and you're not getting anything. So until guys stop doing any work for these assholes, they're going to keep taking your money.
01:09:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
And this is a there's another property management guy that's an honest guy. And he literally laid out the entire freaking scam. So this is what's happening, boys. ah Don't do any emergency work for him.
01:09:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Don't bail out the sites. If they want the site cleared, let them hire ah a competent contractor at a reasonable price. that And that's but that's all you can do if you don't.
01:10:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
if you want to keep working for these guys fine, but then don't complain when you can't make any money because the contracts are all shit money or they don't award them period. Cause they're going to keep the 50 grand
Scams by Property Management Companies
01:10:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
and maybe have to pay out 10 or 15 to somebody for emergency work throughout the season.
01:10:22
Kyle
What chains are they, Steve? Uh-huh.
01:10:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nah, not going to say. Schmacker peril, maybe yeah stuff like that.
01:10:30
Brandon Reilly
believe still open.
01:10:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. What's that? There's still open. Yeah, one of them's a hotel chain ah in my town. There's one bank, ah actually two banks, and then there's a couple restaurants, a couple national restaurants that all of the four four locations have no contractor yet.
01:10:49
zuber
Scott Scheerlein, Anybody bail them
01:10:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
as a well Oh, yeah, yeah, there's been guys that I've told them, like, don't do it again. Like, seriously, don't don't do it again. I mean, I know it's like, but that's the thing. Like, these guys, they'll pay them $2,000 for maybe two or three hours work. So to some younger dudes, that's that's good money. You know, like, okay, yeah, I'll jump at that. I can do that.

The SnowJobs Podcast
But what they're not understanding is the bigger picture, that they're just digging the hole deeper for the contractors in the area. And these these guys these third parties are making more, they're making our money to do no work, to do nothing.

A lot of times the contract starts in October too, and they don't sign it up for November.
01:11:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
And they'll tell.
01:11:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. Yep. And they'll tell the chain, oh, well, we're trying to find somebody. We can't find somebody, blah, blah, blah. And what they're not telling them is they can't find somebody because they're supposed to be paying that that contractor $10,000 a month, and they're offering them $2,000 a month.
