Impact of April Snowstorms

00:01:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Does it matter? I mean, honestly, does it really matter if it's April or January as long as it keeps snowing?
00:01:31
RICK JAMES
let's,
00:01:37
RICK JAMES
I mean, no, but just like, you know, we were kind of wrapped up, you know, I mean, we didn't bring anything back or do anything. I guess we did pull our snow stakes. Only time we probably wouldn't needed them.
00:01:47
RICK JAMES
We pulled them, but.
00:01:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Do you have to pull the farmers back out of the fields because they're already plowing and stuff, plowing up fields?
00:01:53
RICK JAMES
No, they weren't in the fields yet, but yeah, they're noting so but yeah they everything think they all came in, they were all happy, so yeah, was it was a good time.
00:01:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
00:02:01
RICK JAMES
So it was, ah yeah, finally showed up, like you said. So it's nice it showed up, kind of got our average up a little bit again, not our average, but we're still below average, but better than we were a week ago, I guess.
00:02:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got to be close though now, right?
00:02:15
RICK JAMES
That's like 10 inches away, so not bad.
00:02:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. So you didn't have just one storm last

Double Storms in Fargo and Weather Predictions

00:02:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
week. You had two in a couple days, right?
00:02:21
RICK JAMES
Two. Yeah, we had two. We had like a four-inch shirt and then we had a, oh, what was it? 14 inches, 13 and a half, think they said so.
00:02:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got that much.
00:02:31

00:02:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
true weather's 0.10 to one inch was uh it worked okay so they were right in the zone
00:02:55
RICK JAMES
uh it was 0.10 to 14 inches so yeah they were right right in right in line right in the zone the doctor got her doctor got her nailed it nailed it uh oh yeah yeah we'll get into

00:06:32
RICK JAMES
Are we going to sit on the old tee box and harass people?
00:06:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
I still say that's the way to go.
00:06:36
RICK JAMES
I think we should.
00:06:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Bring a speaker and two mics and just sit on one of the tee boxes and just break balls.
00:06:38
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:06:43
RICK JAMES
Or or we just bring a we just bring our mixer bot and we have our mics and we just drive around the golf course on the golf cart and just harass people as we drive around the golf cart.
00:06:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Or...
00:06:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go. Could do that, too.
00:06:53
RICK JAMES
yeah I think that would be more fun. I'm all for that.
00:06:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Just lay out marshmallows everywhere and frustrate people when they think it's their ball because you can't tell.
00:07:01
RICK JAMES
Let's do it. Let's do that. Get us a golf cart and we'll just drive around and, uh, you know, be the marshals.
00:07:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh
00:07:08
RICK JAMES
We'll be the marshals.
00:07:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's pretty funny. Yeah, I want to see which team ah which team takes home the the cup with the 128-stroke average there. So that should be fun.
00:07:17
RICK JAMES
Uh, we'll wear golf knickers and stuff and we'll,
00:07:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go. I actually might have a set. Oh. ah
00:07:25
RICK JAMES
uh, I do not. I do not.
00:07:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what else we got here? Simon 2026 this year is in Cincinnati, and we'll be that'll be running from June 23rd to 26th. All right. So that's something else I had to shout out.
00:07:40
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:07:44
RICK JAMES

00:11:33
RICK JAMES

00:11:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh ah we've only done this like 220 episodes you know what i forgot to mention

Podcast Milestone: One Million Listens

00:11:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
uh not that we really give a shit anymore but i can't we're either we're either just rapidly approaching one million total listens or we're already over it by a good chunk because we don't track the other 12 or 13 platforms that carry the show we only track the top three so not bad not bad not that it matters but uh that's a pretty good milestone i just don't know when we hit it We could have already hit it.
00:11:40
RICK JAMES
What's that?
00:11:57
RICK JAMES
Not bad. Not bad at all.
00:12:02
RICK JAMES
It's pretty cool.
00:12:05
RICK JAMES
Pretty cool.
00:12:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
So congratulations. Oh shit. So tell me about the big, the big Fargo winter here that rolled in in

Heavy Snowfall in Fargo: An East Coast Feel

00:12:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
April.
00:12:14
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah, had a, it was a good week last week, I guess, if you were in the snow business, it was a good week, so yeah, we started the week off with, what was it, think they said three and a half to four inches, the town got, what was it, Tuesday or Wednesday, I can't remember what day it was last week, but.
00:12:31
RICK JAMES
So that came in pretty fast and it was in and out here pretty quick storm, which never really happens around here. We always get the storms that last forever and get one inch.
00:12:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. yep
00:12:42
RICK JAMES
But yeah, we didn't have the wind. We had, we had actually had heavy wet snow and then they called for, were kind of over, over the board this weekend. that came in Saturday night.
00:12:54
RICK JAMES
And i guess they were they're correct on the mounts and the timing pretty much. It ended when they said it was going to end at 3 o'clock on Sunday and the sun came out. and I mean, it snowed.
00:13:05
RICK JAMES
For us, it snowed pretty hard. i We don't get the kind of snow you guys get. It ah it actually felt like an East Coast snow here. couple I've been out there, know, on the East Coast.
00:13:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
00:13:14
RICK JAMES
It was actually piling up on the hood of the vehicle while you're driving around. Yeah. It was nice.
00:13:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
And that doesn't usually happen.
00:13:21
RICK JAMES
No, not here. You get that one inch and it blows around for four days. and me it's It snowed heavy and it was wet. and The guys all had a great time. they had i mean You guys got it made out there. snows like that. It snows heavy. once it's done, the sun comes out, melts behind you.
00:13:41
RICK JAMES
What else you got to
00:13:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, that wasn't really our experience this winter, but yes, a lot of winters are like that. It doesn't
00:13:47
RICK JAMES
It was...

Managing the Snowstorm on a Holiday Weekend

00:13:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
suck.
00:13:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'll tell you that. As long as you don't break shit.
00:13:49
RICK JAMES
I could handle that. I could handle that every time. that was so The guys were all in a good mood. It was i mean you actually felt like you were doing something. it actually felt like it was snowing. So it was fun. it was it was We didn't have a lot of issues. i mean, standard you know heavy snow stuff where you'll have heavy, wet snow. We've had some guys gotta go off the edge of, you know.
00:14:13
RICK JAMES
Got some landscaping to do here and there. And, you know, the gravel lots were kind of sloppy, but we got through them.
00:14:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
yep oh yeah
00:14:20
RICK JAMES
So it was...
00:14:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
i don't know how you would how you even do that gravel lots in well yeah but still it's still gotta like you gotta be sinking as you're as you're rolling through their plowing no
00:14:22
RICK JAMES
Just kind of roll roll the arctics back a little bit and lift them up and you're good.
00:14:36
RICK JAMES
yeah. you you'll If the with the lot's not, you know, if it's a good hard lot, it's not a big deal. But, yeah, we have some truck lots we do. you know, like three of them that are pretty good sized lots that they weren't too bad. We had a couple of us, we did some grading. So yeah, it was a, we'll have to do some more once the piles all melt and we'll have to spread the gravel back out So.
00:14:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did you have all your guys? or Because it was a holiday weekend, right?
00:15:02
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we had a full crew. For the most part, I have a short, I think i short a couple, but we had old Mr. Arctic Steve come down and to help us out like normally, fill them like he always does.
00:15:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did he razorback it or he jumped in a loader?
00:15:13
RICK JAMES
Nah, jumped in his 924 that he loves when he comes here. So yeah, he's yeah He came down and pushed with the boys one one more time this year. So it was, a yeah, we had a i got i add everything out.
00:15:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:15:27
RICK JAMES
So, yeah, everything was out. i he goes We had a couple subs in. some of the normal guys are on vacation. But, yeah, it worked out great, honestly. was the For a while there, you know.
00:15:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
how How long did it snow for, the second one, the big one? how long How long did it take you to get 13 inches?
00:15:46
RICK JAMES
It finally started. The timing was off little bit. It was supposed to start like earlier in the evening. it didn't really start sticking until I'd say probably closer to 2.30 to 3 a.m.
00:15:59
RICK JAMES
And it was done by 2 p.m. 2, 3 p.m.
00:16:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, so you were an inch an hour.
00:16:03
RICK JAMES
It was done. Yeah. So.
00:16:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice. That's pretty heavy snowfall for out there.
00:16:08
RICK JAMES
Yeah. It was it was good. there And it really, it's not heavy. I'd say probably between 5 and... five and eight or nine in the mornings where you got the heaviest stuff. So it was, it was a good time.
00:16:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got the prairie effect.
00:16:22
RICK JAMES
We got the prairie, yeah, got the prairie pond.
00:16:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Prairie effects? No, man.
00:16:26
RICK JAMES
Yeah, prairie. We had the pond, pond snow, you know, the little, the, yeah.
00:16:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
The canal canal effect.
00:16:33
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we had the, no, it was a good time. It was, actually felt like a,
00:16:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
And no breakages?
00:16:40
RICK JAMES
Nothing major.
00:16:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
With the heavy wetness?
00:16:41
RICK JAMES
isn' it No, nothing.
00:16:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
No?
00:16:43
RICK JAMES
i think the sidewalk guys had some issues with some of the equipment, but, uh, otherwise, yeah Pusher wise, we did fine. don't, we didn't break. I don't know.
00:16:54
RICK JAMES
I think a few blocks were broken, but not, not many. So, so yeah, the Phantom did great.
00:16:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's a good storm then. Good for you guys.
00:17:01
RICK JAMES
So yeah, everything was good. So.
00:17:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, i saw the one video. The one video was nice. That was a cool video. It looked really good. Nice clean scrape. Couldn't tell where the wings ended and the moldboard began. So, yeah, that looked good.
00:17:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Definitely.
00:17:17
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:17:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's funny that we kind of switched up winters. Like we had more of a Fargo winner out here this year and you had more of a Northeast winner.
00:17:25
RICK JAMES
Yeah, it was it's fun.
00:17:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because that was what? That last four or five days encompasses, what, a third of your winner, basically?
00:17:33
RICK JAMES
Yeah, honestly, I think we were at like 20 before this last week. we ah According to the National Weather Service, they had us like 26.6 inches on the season. So we gained another one. I don't
00:17:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
And you know the National Weather Service right on.
00:17:53
RICK JAMES
know.
00:17:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
never they are so far off dude oh hey good for you
00:17:56
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:17:58
RICK JAMES
So we got probably half our winter two days or four days compared, you know, so that was good.

April Snow Hauling: Uncommon Tasks

00:18:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah. It was nice to least end the year on something big and we got, we're going into hauling tonight.
00:18:12
RICK JAMES
We're going to haul everything. And then we got a bunch of other been working all morning.
00:18:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
ridiculous hauling in april what a scam
00:18:19
RICK JAMES
We've been, we've been pushing out places this morning already. And yeah, we're going to do i think I got 30 some trucks rolling tonight and
00:18:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Bring in the melters. Bring in the melters.
00:18:30
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Todd's been, he's been, he was all over the phone this week and saying, should bring the military? like, yeah, bring them up. It'd be kind of fun, but.
00:18:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
You should have brought one of his big runway blowers in. The big snow blower. That would have been great to see out in Fargo.
00:18:43
RICK JAMES
Hey, our blowers did, did, they were doing work on Saturday, Saturday. Yeah. Saturday.
00:18:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Were they happy?
00:18:49
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:18:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Are they happy eating the wet stuff as much as they are with the powder?
00:18:54
RICK JAMES
LaRue doesn't matter. That thing eats her.
00:18:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
LaRue didn't know the difference. i love that thing.
00:18:59
RICK JAMES
I was blowing all day yesterday too. so it was I was going right through that stuff. so It wasn't wet as shit. I thought I plugged up a couple times but I was cutting down the pile.
00:19:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Wasn't just a shopping cart. It was just a shopping cart.
00:19:12
RICK JAMES
No, I was cutting down the pile and there on the side of LaRue. There's emergency shut off button and the the snow fell down into it and shut it off. i was like, ah, shit.
00:19:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh,
00:19:21
RICK JAMES
ah they're like I don't think I plugged it but Yeah.
00:19:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
God, that the you know what, LaRue, they make a great product, so I would i would expect nothing less from them.
00:19:26
RICK JAMES
Not bad.
00:19:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
So that's good.
00:19:33
RICK JAMES
yeah.
00:19:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, for the price of a house.
00:19:35
RICK JAMES
So, yeah, we good.
00:19:38
RICK JAMES
So, we'll see how tonight goes. Everything should go good. I'm sure it'll be perfect. No issues like normal.
00:19:43
RICK JAMES
mean, like.
00:19:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
You still have dump sites that are, like, not going to get trucks stuck?
00:19:47
RICK JAMES
No, our dump sites, are they'd be pretty muddy. i gotta I got a spot in town we used to push that that business closed.
00:19:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
I bet.
00:19:54
RICK JAMES
That's an asphalt lot, and they're going to let us dump there tonight.
00:19:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:20:00
RICK JAMES
I don't think they really know how much snow we're going be bringing, but a lot's going to be full.
00:20:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Minor detail. Minor detail.
00:20:06
RICK JAMES
it's It's empty.
00:20:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Don't ask, don't tell.
00:20:08

00:21:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, my God, too funny.
00:21:16
RICK JAMES
And one thing about my guys, they do not miss breakfast, lunch, or supper, or dinner.
00:21:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, that's...
00:21:23
RICK JAMES
mean, lots of snacks in between.
00:21:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
engaging Yeah, they're the pretty the cabs are pretty packed. they They come prepared, and they still need food every 10 minutes. It's crazy.
00:21:33
RICK JAMES
Well, once we're done recording, I'm going to run to Costco and get a bunch of wieners. cause i got eat They told me i had to get hot dogs on a roller tonight before we haul.
00:21:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
What?
00:21:40
RICK JAMES
so
00:21:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's not Wednesday.
00:21:41
RICK JAMES
It's Monday, but they they want their stuff.
00:21:44
The SnowJobs Podcast

The SnowJobs Podcast

00:21:50
The SnowJobs Podcast

00:21:51
RICK JAMES

00:21:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
there you go oh that's too funny man yep basically oh well i'm glad you guys got snow dude that's great good for you finish on a high note we might get a couple we might get some snow tonight um nick doesn't think so it depends it's like
00:21:58
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:22:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah, was really good. Yeah.
00:22:11
RICK JAMES
No, really
00:22:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nick and weather pros say absolutely not. They say it's high elevation. It's not, you know, you're not going to see any flakes. You're not going to see any accumulation. But then there are a couple weather, not channels, weather dudes out there that are usually not like crazy weather people, as we call them.
00:22:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
And they're saying like coding to two. So I don't think, I don't see that, but I think I'm going to have to, I'm going to have to stay up at least to, to see if it starts doing anything

Uncertain East Coast Snow Predictions

00:22:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
overnight. But I mean, there's nothing we're going to do anyway.
00:22:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know we're,
00:22:52
RICK JAMES
Your ground temp's got be pretty high, isn't it, by now?
00:22:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
ground temp is well well above freezing i think we're at 48 or 49 right now um that the it's in the low 50s right now outside ambient temperature so i just don't see it it is going to drop the the air temp is going to drop tonight but even so it's just you're not going to do anything what are you going to it's going to be 48 degrees by 11 a.m tomorrow morning so it's nothing going worry about
00:23:00
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:23:20
RICK JAMES
ah you're Well, if you're up tonight, get on the call. We'll be on the call having some major conversations.
00:23:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
I haven't been able to get on that call all year. i Can't figure it out.
00:23:28
RICK JAMES
It's not that hard. and Spend the afternoon, get on the call, and enjoy it.
00:23:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well,
00:23:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't understand why we had to go away from Google Meet and go to this new thing.
00:23:38
RICK JAMES
Because ben Ben screwed it up.
00:23:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Ben screwed it up. Oh, okay.
00:23:43
RICK JAMES
I don't know.
00:23:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Tell him to unscrew it.
00:23:43
RICK JAMES
that's what we don't... I like the new one better anyway. Discord is easy, simple.
00:23:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Not for me.
00:23:52
RICK JAMES
Todd Dickerson figured it out. He's a yellow notepad.
00:23:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Now, don't let him fool you with that shit.
00:23:56
RICK JAMES
He's been on there.
00:23:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
he is He says the yellow legal pad thing, but he's all about systems, and he's all about, the yeah.
00:24:02
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:24:05
RICK JAMES
True. Yeah. Because he's not cutting us a check, right?
00:24:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah
00:24:11
RICK JAMES
He wants all these proof of this and that.
00:24:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. He wants paperwork paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, all these requests for paperwork. So he's not as yellow legal pad as he makes it out to be.
00:24:20
RICK JAMES
yeah well'll just I'll just call them all around here. I don't care. a he
00:24:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we're just fucking around with him.
00:24:26
RICK JAMES
Shame them. I'll shame them into it. So.
00:24:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, too funny, man. Too funny. So anything else about the storm?
00:24:35
RICK JAMES
No, not really. I mean, like I say, it wast was a good good storm to end Guys all had a good time. Morale was high. It was Easter weekend. and we got it all done.
00:24:45
RICK JAMES
as The boys still all got to go home to the see their bunnies and all that fun stuff.
00:24:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
they're bunnies.
00:24:50
RICK JAMES
so
00:24:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh,
00:24:53
RICK JAMES
But no, it was fun. Glad we got a little bit of winter. and The guys, like you say, it's a good way to end on a high note. So we got a couple of by two two more days of hauling and some pile moving we want to do and once that's over it can be spring let's go move on
00:25:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, and it's also it's also good it's it's also really good for negotiations for next year's contracts because you're not at 25 inches anymore where you're averaging 55.
00:25:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Now you're just slightly below average. You're not half of your yearly average, which, you know, that looks a lot worse because you guys were down last year too, right? Yeah.
00:25:31
RICK JAMES
yep yep we had 26 inches last year so yeah
00:25:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
So if you did two years in the 20s when you're averaging 55, people are going to start being like, well, don't know if we need to pay that much for that. That's when they start trying to roll the dice. So that's good that you guys jump back up into the the mid 40s.
00:25:44
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:25:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
So good.
00:25:48
RICK JAMES
For sure.
00:25:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Speaking next season. So what do you, we'll we'll start talking about our equipment, when're what we do when we bring them home and stuff. You keep yours all at home.
00:25:58
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:26:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
What do you guys do at Glacier? Do you guys have a process? I think we covered this once before a couple of years ago, but like what what's your process?
00:26:05
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:26:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
When does it start? How long does it take?
00:26:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we're going to start. the We'll start this week. I got crews coming in, I think, Thursday. starting to I'm calling it. I'm calling it now. so ah I got crews starting Thursday. We're going start washing all the you know wash all equipment, open up all the panels on the loaders and Start, give them a good solid wash, clean up, go through all the sidewalk machine machines, same thing, solters, we just go through them all, blowers, we'll clean them all up, fluid film them, put them away, and like, i mean, we'll wash all loaders really well.
00:26:44
RICK JAMES
put them in back in the shop where they belong and the guys will start and the mechanics start picking through them as the you know summer goes on we'll obviously get all the sidewalk stuff done first because some of that stuff's got to get switched over for some you know summer work they'll do that first and we'll start working on all the big bigger loaders and you know, do all the painting, pull the mats out, do any rust protection we got to do on them like we normally, I mean, it's just just your standard, go from top to bottom on them all, honestly, check them over and see if we want to rotate any out before next year or what, but that usually never happens, we usually just add, so.
00:27:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
you grind down You grind down rough spots, prime and paint?
00:27:28
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:27:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:27:29
RICK JAMES
Grind them down. We'll touch up paint on them. We'll, you fluid film, everything like you always love to say too. So, so yeah, it's it's it's it's a full summer of going through everything for couple guys, you know, so.
00:27:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Fluid film's a miracle ah product there.
00:27:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. Well, I'll tell you the one thing I won't be doing this year is I will not be power washing the sidewalk machines anymore after our conversation on the cutting edge the other day with boss.
00:27:55
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:27:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cause I wouldn't have even thought of that. Like we hit everything. We wash, we wet them all down with a hose. We don't power wash it right away, but we, the sidewalk machines, we wet them all down and then we hit them with, cause gotta be wet when the salt away, the neutral wash goes on.
00:28:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Then we put the NutriWash on, we wait the five minutes that we're supposed to for it to do its thing, and then we power wash everything off.
00:28:12
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:28:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
But not even thinking like you're atomizing salt residue and forcing it now into all those places you maybe don't want to. Yeah. We haven't seen a lot of corrosion inside the SSVs. um You know, I think they're, um I'm not going say better put together, but I think they have less cavities.
00:28:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like they have less places salt can hide. You can pretty much, you can pretty much see where everything is if you open the panels and take the cover off. um So they make it a little easier, but I'm going to make sure that I am on that this year because I wasn't last year and some stuff got missed.
00:28:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
so we're going to make sure but yeah we do the same thing bring them home wash them uh desalinization process with either the neutral wash salt away whatever you use uh we wash them again wait for them to dry then we regrease all the zerks we refluid film the machine even though it's hell on your pants in the summer when you're brushing past the things it's uh it's worth it in the winter um
00:29:20
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:29:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
The one thing I'm definitely going to do this year that I haven't done in years past is I'm going to pop the covers on the belly salters on the SSVs off. I'm going to pop those covers off, and I'm going to take the chains off. and um Even though they're stainless steel chains, um they are not stainless steel sprockets.
00:29:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
So the corrosion on the sprockets gets into, you know, it kind of bonds itself with the the chains at times and spots and creates little knuckles where the thing likes to hop off.
00:29:41
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:29:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we're going to pop those chains off this year and and keep them in oil. That way they'll be ready to put back on in the in the fall. um mark mark or ed will go through all the machines check the fluids uh just check the levels make sure that we didn't lose fluid um that you know indicative of a problem that we got to check out make sure everything's in good running order get all last year's film off and uh again wash them film them regrease them uh and then they start getting run once a week um
00:30:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, the trucks, we don't really do much to the trucks besides a heavy wash inside and outside. um all the All the fluid changes, filter changes and stuff we do right before the season starts.
00:30:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
We don't do it. in the so i mean, they only have.
00:30:37
RICK JAMES
You run them though.
00:30:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
What?
00:30:39
RICK JAMES
You run all your, you will run them every once a while you're in the summer.
00:30:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
The trucks run. Yeah, the trucks run during the summer.
00:30:42
RICK JAMES
Yeah. I mean, how about your, how about like your sidewalk stuff? Do you ever run them around?
00:30:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
the machines get the machines supposed to get run a half an hour a week so usually start them up and uh and run them a half an hour a week um we keep the batteries on the tenders we got all the noco uh tenders on the batteries on them so we keep them plugged in so they keep trickle charging um but yeah it's i gotta to take really good care of those now because i'm not making them anymore um
00:31:03
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:31:10
RICK JAMES
What?
00:31:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. ah
00:31:13
RICK JAMES
The local circle charges?
00:31:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
I am going to send, at at least one of them is going down to Jimmy, is going down to Maryland to get a an overhaul done. um We're having a little, I i said ah on one of the other shows, we're having an issue with the pulley alignment on the the PTO pulleys, drive pulleys.
00:31:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
we We're having an issue on that midway through the season on the one. So I want to see if somehow the, the, the, what, the, the pulley drive lineup the the two inline pulleys i want to see if somehow one of them got tweaked and is out of line because we were tearing up belts pretty good there after uh just midway through the season started happening um but yeah other than that i mean that's pretty much it on the equipment and then we start just taking an inventory of what we what we need you know the spreaders same thing spreaders all get desalted washed uh code everything with film again run the run the run the chain one rotation completely so we film every knuckle on the chain
00:32:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
with fluid film um then we re-dielectric grease the the fittings and we usually um we usually put a uh ems rubber ems glove uh around them so that no debris over the summer gets onto them um
00:32:30
RICK JAMES
Hmm. Smart.
00:32:33
RICK JAMES
smart
00:32:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we vent it so no moisture builds up in it. Because if you just put the thing with a zip tie around it, you'll just get moisture and stuff, condensation built up inside there.
00:32:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
And that's not good for it. So we just poke a couple holes and allow it to breathe. But at least it keeps the, when the guys are moving around the yard and stuff with blowers and shit and leaf blowers and mowers, at least ah the debris doesn't get in there.
00:32:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then, huh?
00:32:59
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm. Do you ever bring anything home yet or no?
00:33:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
no we are our contracts are active till april 15th so uh next week next week i i mean should could we yes 100 but i usually keep stuff until the contracts are are expired um just as a i don't know they're paying for it to be there so it'll be there um
00:33:02
RICK JAMES
Have you brought?
00:33:06
RICK JAMES
Okay. I've seen some guys already bringing stuff home.
00:33:17
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yep.
00:33:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, and then we start taking inventory. When we pick up all the stakes, we see how many we lost. This year, we lost a shit ton. um
00:33:35
RICK JAMES
That's every year.
00:33:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
you But you're you're not gonna. I mean, like, I remember somebody calling me. I forget who it was. And he was like, dude, I've never seen so many plow right stakes that are just sheared off and broken. I'm like...
00:33:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
dude, we plowed three times as much as we ever, you know, as we usually do. I hit four or five that I know I sheared off just because I went, you know, i was trying to wing it, wing back the bank.
00:33:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
And, you know, they're not going to, they're not miracle. You know, they're not indestructible. You're going to shear them off here and there.
00:34:05
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:34:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's why they're, that's why they're cheap. You replace them. You know, when you have a winter, like we just had with seven, what is it? 79 inches. You know, and I was just given the the amount of reports. We have 28 incident reports, twenty like snow reports from the weather guys. So you're looking at, you know, we didn't plow 28 times. Some of those were salt things, but we got 20 plowings.
00:34:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, it's ah it' a lot of fucking plowing.
00:34:30
RICK JAMES
yep
00:34:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a lot of times these things are getting knocked back and forth and hit by heavy wet snow or hit by blades. they're not They're not indestructible.
00:34:39
RICK JAMES
Yep. No, not at all
00:34:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, I mean, the fiberglass ones, forget it. you You wouldn't even find remnants of those after a winter like this.
00:34:45
RICK JAMES
all. Oh, God. I hate those.
00:34:49
RICK JAMES
No.
00:34:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
it's It's pretty crazy. So, yeah, we'll take our we'll take our inventory of of how many steaks we're going to need for next year to reorder.
00:34:56
RICK JAMES
do you Do you keep track how many stakes you put on each site?
00:35:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
um Within a within about a hundred like on the big sites we know to within about a hundred how many were put now the one side I think we got I think we have over 1500 on the one side alone because we got to mark every little thing out there.
00:35:07
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:35:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
But most of those are plowrites, and I think the only ones that are i think the only ones that aren't plowrites on that site are the blue ones marking the hydrant hydrant locations.
00:35:29
RICK JAMES
Thanks.
00:35:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
But all the other ones now, I think we've we've swapped out over the last two years to plowrites. um
00:35:35
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:35:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, and yeah they're great. we've We've had no problems. We have no complaints. Like, for the price, no complaints.
00:35:41
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:35:42
RICK JAMES
i'm a
00:35:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah they're They're consumables.
00:35:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, we treat them like an oil filter. We know we're going to replace them.
00:35:49
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:35:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yup.
00:35:50
RICK JAMES
Yeah, no, we we, like I say, we grabbed the guys around couple weeks ago and picked all of ours up. And i saw a bunch in the dumpster that were broke off or whatever, that was you know, had or always order.
00:36:01
RICK JAMES
You always got to order more every year and you get more accounts. So shit that happens.
00:36:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
you Yeah. You know, like I said,
00:36:08
RICK JAMES
So Matt will be ordering more steaks or just,
00:36:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, that's guys should expect that. Do guys really expect to recoup, you know, a hundred percent of the stakes that they put out?
00:36:18
RICK JAMES
No, we can't.
00:36:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like,
00:36:19
RICK JAMES
The thing is, like we talked about, we got people got to, you know, like you say, it's consumer. Well, got to put that in your bids too. You got add that in that, you know, so.
00:36:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, 100%. And that's what we do. That's that's a cost of doing business. that we We treat them like fuel. we're not once we Once we use that fuel, we're not getting that fuel back.
00:36:36
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:36:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, you know, the snow stakes, I'm prepared with our the way we price the sites. I'm prepared to reorder them every year in full for the sites because, you know, you you need them. if you That's just how we view it. We don't view it as something that we're going to hang on to more than one season.
00:36:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Maybe that's wrong, but, you know, that's how we do it.
00:36:53
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:36:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then what else?
00:36:57
RICK JAMES
Smart.
00:36:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then we check all the, you know, we go through the shovels, see how many of them we lost throughout the season. This year, I think we lost one due to a track machine running it over.
00:37:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
um And that wasn't even what?
00:37:11
RICK JAMES
You lost one. That's it. You only lost one shovel. Yep.
00:37:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
we rarely We rarely lose a shovel. um We've had... Like I said, we use those snowplow shovels. like Short of running it over with a fucking machine, those things are pretty indestructible.
00:37:22
RICK JAMES
yep
00:37:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know you have them.
00:37:27
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah. Yep. We just lose them on the roads.
00:37:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, they're... I've heard guys say, you spent $45 on a shovel. because I've had the same ones for fucking eight years. Like, they last forever. You know, it's...
00:37:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
We maybe...
00:37:40
RICK JAMES
five dollars That's cheap.
00:37:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
We probably have 40, 30 or 40 of them in there. There's there's well over 30, probably between 30 and 40 of them. And like I said, if we break one spine a year, like...
00:37:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
And usually it's from twisting, not from...
00:37:56
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:37:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know not from just shoveling straight ahead it's when guys try and twist the handle if they're stuck or something in the snow pile then that's usually when you get the the fiberglass will crack in the cold but otherwise those things are bulletproof you can but it it's usually not the handle it's usually the yellow fiberglass spine um you can you can those are completely those are like artics you can replace every part
00:38:02
RICK JAMES
you
00:38:09
RICK JAMES
You can buy just the handles, you know?
00:38:16
RICK JAMES
Yeah. You can buy that too. Yeah. if
00:38:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
So they're 100% replaceable.
00:38:22
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:38:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
The only thing I'm not sure of is the self-tappers.
00:38:29
RICK JAMES
Oh, you you can use any Zelftaver.
00:38:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
just No, but I'm saying if you've already drilled the hole and then got to put a new part on, you've got to move the hole location.
00:38:34
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
00:38:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't know if that weakens it or not, but um I'm sure it'll be all right.
00:38:40
RICK JAMES
Oh.
00:38:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
but yeah those things are great man they self sharpen when you're using the blades they self sharpen as you go we love those things but i think yeah i think we only got to order two um and then that's i get them on amazon yeah the last couple years ah since they've been on amazon i jump on them on amazon i usually pick them up in august usually when's prime day they got a prime day and over the summer there yeah
00:38:46
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:38:53
RICK JAMES
Didn't you say you used to get them on Amazon? Don't you get yours on Amazon? Oh.
00:39:01
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:39:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Uh, June, there's a couple now, but I think they to in June, but I don't really know.
00:39:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Well, if you have a commercial account um for Amazon, you can get a commercial account for your business where the pricing is different.
00:39:17
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yep.
00:39:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
And they have different like rebate days for certain products.
00:39:19
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:39:23
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:39:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I get no, I actually, I hate the notifications, but I did click on the notifications for those. So if they're coming up on sale, I get notified and i usually grab them sometimes over the sometime over the summer.
00:39:36
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:39:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, the snowplow shovel, those are legit. A lot of people have copied them. um A lot of people have licensed them, I think. I think actually, I think Boss sells them with a Boss boss Colors and Logo.
00:39:45
RICK JAMES
Yeah. They saw. Yep. Yep.
00:39:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's the same shovels. it's ah They're made by the snowplow snowlow shovel. um
00:39:53
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:39:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, they're top-notch shovels. I mean, a lot of guys buy the disposable ones that, you know, buy the box. I don't understand that logic. That doesn't work for me, so...
00:40:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, then we get into, once we're done with the equipment and we figure out, you know, what consumables we got to reorder and stuff and get in stock, you know, we check the cutting edges on everything, see what what edges are going to have to be replaced before the next year and see if ah new shoes. i'm probably going to to throw new shoes on the Artics, at least two of them this coming year. Yeah.
00:40:27
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I know I need to need to talk to Ronnie, Ron out of winter. oh um I need some more systems for the Smartix, that's for sure. Oh,
00:40:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I don't know if I'm going to go with that or if I'm just... I think i think I'll probably just go with the OEM Arctic shoes. we do We don't burn them up like you.
00:40:45
RICK JAMES
yeah.
00:40:47
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we have to run those.
00:40:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like, I'm talking ah the two 10-footers that I'm thinking I'm going to have...
00:40:49
RICK JAMES
We just...
00:40:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
if I don't... I think I'm going to have to replace them. um You're talking six years of wear on them.
00:41:00
RICK JAMES
That's crazy. Good for you guys.
00:41:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
So...
00:41:02
RICK JAMES
That's not a thing here.
00:41:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
No.
00:41:04
RICK JAMES
I can get that out. I can get that out of winters, but not not out of the stock ones.
00:41:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, no, i can't I can't. Well, and yeah, it's got to be because, yeah, those are the two blue ones, the two blue 10s. They're at least six. Yeah, they're they're six years old.
00:41:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think I got them in 20. So, yeah, that's we've been we've been very, we I can't, like I said, I can't complain about anything we've had with Arctic as far as premature wear.
00:41:26
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:41:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
I know a lot of guys have had that. i don't know we just we haven't experienced that our cutting edges last and the shoes last and i don't know it might just be how little we're actually plowing i don't know you know maybe we're just you know we're not out when when we have two inches of snow we're not out for 24 hours of continuous plowing on two inches you know two inches is like maybe three hours four hours tops under plow and then you're done so
00:41:55
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah.
00:42:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah. No, we burned through all of our, that's,
00:42:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah we don't i don't think we have the hours on the asphalt that you guys have or some people have you know
00:42:11
RICK JAMES
we got a lot of concrete too. And then we have some, we have some gravity chip stuff too.
00:42:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
and concrete will eat through that shit a lot a lot quicker than asphalt will definitely um but yeah once we once we got all that done then we just start we do a postseason review on all the sites uh how things went what worked what didn't work um start talking to the opera
00:42:15
RICK JAMES
That's really where it shit down.
00:42:20
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:42:33
RICK JAMES
I assume you got walkthroughs of managers and stuff like that. there
00:42:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we generally generally they're already doing that. They've already done a couple sites. The guys walk through and they do their ground repair. They get everything back to, you know, we we did plowing as much as we did this year.
00:42:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
We did have spots at a couple sites that we knew about that we're going to have to repair. So we did that.
00:42:54
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah.
00:42:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
on the smaller the smaller tier one sites last week and then the guys are this week they're working on the two complexes um little stuff like i think we we separated the we separated the top part of a storm drain in one of the complexes you know it just sits there it's like 300 pound cover um we gotta to we gotta to just put that back in place and tack it um we We definitely have some ground repair where in the one complex, there's just nowhere to stack. So we have to leave the pavement and push back far. And then when we're when we're blowing those piles, because there's snow there from early December all the way you know to February that did not melt, it doesn't matter what the air temp is. The ground under that snow pile is not frozen.
00:43:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
So as soon as we leave pavement, um the one thing we did start doing was we did start bringing the track machine instead of using wheel machines to blow. When we got to blow of those piles, we started bringing the track machines around, which I think we'll continue to do, even though it's a bigger pain in the butt.
00:43:53
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:43:56
RICK JAMES
That's smart.
00:44:01
RICK JAMES
But they're so much nicer on them. It seemed like you can just do more.
00:44:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
definitely the the ground pressure is so much less uh you know it doesn't do the turf damage especially when you're dealing with you know a skid with a blower and snow tires you're doing even more turf damage than normal because you're putting that much more weight on a much uh thinner tire so you're you're you're definitely divoting
00:44:05
RICK JAMES
so
00:44:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
the ground so they're fixing that and then we just we literally just sit down with the guys we'll sit down with the sidewalk guys we'll sit down with the operators you know what worked on this site what didn't work what was you know were the people nice to you that's very important to me like how were my guys treated Because I've said it multiple times, we're not starving for work.
00:44:40
RICK JAMES
Great. That's
00:44:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
We have every ability to say no, you know, better served by others if it's not right for us, if we're not making the profit we need to make on it, if we're not getting it done in the timeframe we need to.
00:44:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
or want to if it's just not efficient enough for us we have no problem putting them in contact with other companies and just saying hey we're we're just not going to do this next year so and uh you know that's when we make those decisions and we do have there are uh at least two sites that we are gonna we are gonna give the better serve by others uh you know when we go through it i know too that right off the bat that we're
00:45:06
RICK JAMES
right that's good
00:45:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're basically saying thank you, but no thank you. And we're picking up another, we've already been, God, we we have a pick of the litter with properties right now. And um every day it seems like somebody else is calling with a blank checkbook saying, just tell us what it's going to cost. And, you know, we've,
00:45:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
The one site that we know we're going to say see you later, um there's two smaller sites that are right down the road that literally will take a tenth of the time to do with one machine.
00:45:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
And when you put their contract price together, what we can get for them, it's going to equal basically that one bigger site. That is a pain in the butt.
00:45:58
RICK JAMES
Yeah, that makes sense.
00:45:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, and yeah, makes a lot more sense. you know make more money with less expenditure.
00:46:05
RICK JAMES
Make more money, work less.
00:46:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
00:46:07
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:46:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's the name of the game.
00:46:08
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Why not everybody else's man.
00:46:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
well That's it. I mean, that's that's basically what we what we do. We just, ah you know, and and the biggest thing, like I said, i take it very seriously. If my guys have 99% of the people we work for are absolute just home runs. They're great people, and they don't give us any shit.
00:46:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
But every so often, like especially in some of the complexes, if you have 200 residents in there, just the law of averages. First of all, we're in New York. So, I mean, it's not like we're in a normal thinking state to begin with. So you have 200 residents in there.
00:46:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Just the law of averages says that you're going to have 20 people out of the 200 that are going to be batshit crazy.
00:46:54
RICK JAMES
okay
00:46:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know every was you You know, you're hoping for 90% happiness. that's That's it. But you're never going to make 10 out of 10 people happy. So...
00:47:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
So if the, you know, my guys tell me they weren't treated well, or they were talked to nasty and, you know, in in situations where they didn't deserve it, or it wasn't necessary, you know, if my guys are out of line, I'll be the first one to tell them like, Hey, I will take care of that. And, you know, thank you for bringing it to my attention. But It's impossible to hear from 10 people. You know, you hear nine people saying, oh, my God, your guys are so polite. They're so sweet. They go out of their way to do everything. And then one person's like, you guys are the biggest fucking assholes on the planet. And they're standing in the same spot talking to the same three guys.
00:47:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, it's just so I don't want to deal with that.
00:47:41
RICK JAMES
so
00:47:44
RICK JAMES
yeah well that's good you gotta yeah you gotta stand up for your guys you know like you say if they're in the wrong they're in the wrong but if you know people are just being assholes to them you gotta stand up for them just because they're your customer doesn't make them you know they can do what they want to your people that's one of my biggest pet peeves exactly you have to you have to stand behind your people too so
00:47:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, my guys work too hard for these people. So. 100%.
00:47:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
hundred percent
00:47:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
ha they ain't gonna be my customer they ain't gonna be my customer for long
00:48:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah i mean like i said we're not if anything i'm looking to tighten up i'm not looking to get any bigger i haven't expanded in years i'm not going to expand what i do works it works for me it works for my guys if anything i can definitely see us getting a little smaller going forward um
00:48:25
RICK JAMES
If I make better profit though
00:48:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think so. And I just want to get it to the point where i want to get it to the point where if I'm not around because I'm traveling for this or I'm traveling for that, you know, whether it be hockey, snow jobs or whatever demands are on my time during the winter that are taking precedent that I know that everything in that portfolio, I don't really have to be there for.
00:48:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
There's no nuclear missile silo locations that I have to worry about them plowing, you know, nothing super sensitive.
00:48:50
RICK JAMES
though. Mm-hmm.
00:48:57
RICK JAMES
Nothing you can talk about.
00:48:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, nothing that I need to worry about that that literally my worst guy on his worst day could not handle with 100% efficiency and certainty. so
00:49:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:49:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we'll see. But what do

Evaluating Site Profitability and Contracts

00:49:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
you guys do? Do you guys go through, you know, your you do a like a hot wash at the end of the season and find out, you know, what sites worked, what didn't?
00:49:20
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah yeah, definitely. Yep. we you know We have sites that we will look through. oh We'll do, ah like you say, a deep dive through all of our sites. And you know if we're not making a profit we want to make off them, we'll definitely look at that and cut it loose or see if we can renegotiate or you know vice versa on that deal. And then we'll, you know, if...
00:49:41
RICK JAMES
we do our standard walkthroughs and like, just like you said, if it's, if it's not working out for us, not fitting, we'll work on those issues. But i mean, most of our stuff fits. It's just comes out of profitability.
00:49:54
RICK JAMES
And, you know, if that's, we're, we're pretty much want the white glove, you know, of, we're not, we don't want to do this loss to do lots.
00:49:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep Yeah
00:50:03
RICK JAMES
Like you we're here to make money. So it's,
00:50:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen I love, believe me, I love taking the spots that nobody else can do well And and banging them out of the park I love doing that, but at this point Unless we're making a shit ton of money You know, it's honestly not worth Especially in New York, it's not worth the risk It's just getting
00:50:21
RICK JAMES
No. Yeah, the risk is...
00:50:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
You getting too ridiculous.
00:50:24
RICK JAMES
The reward's gone all way to risk nowadays. I mean, it's i mean it's just crazy what...
00:50:29
RICK JAMES
what oh
00:50:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
I want to be one of those guys down in Florida that the governor's begging to come back because she lost my tax money.
00:50:35
RICK JAMES
Yeah, exactly. Come on back.
00:50:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, no, no, ma'am.
00:50:40
RICK JAMES
Is that working out for you guys? I bet that's working really well.
00:50:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, it's got to be working great, man. You know, it's got to be. i When you you tell all the you tell the top 1% of the wealth in the state to leave two years ago and they listen to you and they take their homes and their businesses with them and then 68% of your tax base has been eroded.
00:51:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's I would say it's working right to plan, you know. so How are you going to give away all this free shit if you don't have the tax base coming in to pay for all the free shit?
00:51:09
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:51:14
RICK JAMES
Well, tax all the other guys but more. Silly.
00:51:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
It did. Yeah.
00:51:26
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah. we' We'll go down a slippery slope there if we keep going down.
00:51:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah Yeah, no more politics.
00:51:31
RICK JAMES
So, yeah.
00:51:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man. But, yeah, that's like we start looking at our contracts, too, where I've already started doing that, um finding out, okay, what what clauses in there worked in our favor, what clauses maybe, what clauses worked out that it worked for both parties.
00:51:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Because, like I said, I try and be very fair with all our contracts.
00:51:51
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:51:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I want to, you know, I want both of us to come out feeling like we got our money's worth.
00:51:57
RICK JAMES
I feel like you, yep.
00:51:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I just, I sent out the end of season invoices last week. And so far I have talked to probably half of the, half of the clients that got overages, overage charges for the snowfall because they hit the ceilings.
00:52:14
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yep.
00:52:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
And,
00:52:16
RICK JAMES
ye
00:52:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nobody has complained. They said, no, it is what it is, man. It's in the contract. And, you know, we, you know, it's not like you guys didn't work your asses off this winter, you know, so it's, I said, well, I'm glad people are taking it in stride because some of these bills are astronomical for the the final payment.
00:52:29
RICK JAMES
As long as I see that.
00:52:35
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm. Do you send any kind of survey out to your clients or anything? Like, do you?
00:52:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
We send it out to whoever our contact person is. Yeah. The, whoever is the contact person is it's not necessarily the owner.
00:52:44
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:52:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sometimes, sometimes it's ah yeah.
00:52:48
RICK JAMES
Yep. It's the guy you dealt with.
00:52:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
The manager, it's our point of contact. We'll, we'll definitely, we'll sit down with them and ah and send them a survey and, and see what they're most of the time.
00:52:52
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:52:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
They can't wait to, if they have any complaints, they, they usually don't wait there. They're usually dealt with during the season, but
00:53:02
RICK JAMES
Yeah, exactly.
00:53:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, yeah, I mean, all in all, so far what we've heard this year was, you know, tremendous stuff. We had a lot of snow. We had a lot of events, and the guys killed all of them. you know, they did great. Even when the weather guys didn't call for it, they still they still jumped right on it.
00:53:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, yeah, I want to what's that?
00:53:21
RICK JAMES
Yep. Do you have an end year, you like a, sorry to interrupt, do you have like an end of year party for you guys or anything like that, your employees or anything like that?
00:53:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
are good?
00:53:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
we haven't yet but we're gonna have to do something i'm just figuring out what everybody wants to do because there's my guys are you got two groups of guys that are very different and have very different tastes and very different legs so i might have to do two separate things but i don't know yeah at the very least we'll uh we'll do something barbecue or ball game or something like that but uh yeah we got to do something but uh
00:53:43
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:53:48
RICK JAMES
Gotcha.
00:53:55
RICK JAMES
gotcha
00:53:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know you try and take care of the guys as best they can and you know they know the nice thing about them is they know like one of the guys said today hey i'm gonna grab one of the windstorms for a while yeah no problem like my guys are always entitled to whatever they need to make their lives easier to work on their own home or or on a neighbor's house helping them out yeah go ahead take the machine get it done you know because
00:54:19
RICK JAMES
Yeah.

Contract Clause Review After Harsh Winter

00:54:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
whenever i pick up the phone they answer so
00:54:20
RICK JAMES
Goes a long way. Exactly. Long as it works both ways.
00:54:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, the contracts, I'm glad we had this year where we normally average 41 and we were at 76. I'm glad we had it. We were over for both events, well over for events and inches.
00:54:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I'm glad we had the ah the contract set up the way we did. We'll go through it and see if we need to tweak stuff. Like I know see it wasn't so much us. It was more south of us where they had a lot of mixing and a lot of ice.
00:54:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
We didn't really have but one storm that mixed. Everything was snow, all snow all the time, really, for us this year. We did not have a lot of mixing at all.
00:55:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
We did not have we had one ice storm um that I can just off the top of my head that I'm remembering.
00:55:06
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:55:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I know a lot of guys are saying they they're going to have to put something in there like a sleet clause or, you know, an ice clause. And I'm looking at it, and i'm I'm saying, yeah, that's smart to do, but I don't want to also over-clause the contract, too, because then it just starts looking like, well, wait a minute. No matter what we get, you're activating a clause, and we're going to pay more. I don't want it to start looking like we're we're just covering our bases, but I don't want it to look like there's a ton of add-ons.
00:55:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah, but you still got cover yourself.
00:55:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
So what we already... Yeah, but like what we already have in there is it's not called an icing event. ah You know, it's not called an icing event or or an icing event clause, something like that. But we have a thing where it's a storm duration thing where if the storm goes over eight hours, we start charging for a salting every four hours.
00:56:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
So like if a storm is eight hours, we charge for two saltings on it because we know that salt's only going to hold up so long that we're going to have to be back there salting again.
00:56:07
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:56:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
So we have to be compensated for that. So we have that duration clause in there. We've we've had that in there for years. And I think that pretty well covers us for the ice stuff that other guys were talking about.
00:56:26
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:56:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, you know, the contract worked pretty well. I don't think we, I mean, I don't think we missed out anything.
00:56:31
RICK JAMES
Great.

The SnowJobs Podcast
The the customers don't feel like they got abused. um The, the people that really were not happy were the, the per push, especially the ones that we advise to go seasonal going into this year.
00:56:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:56:46
RICK JAMES
Yep. Mm-hmm.
00:56:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
um Yeah, they, they, but you know, that was their choice. Like this is a free country. You can, we, we give you both options.
00:56:54
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:56:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
You choose what you want. and
00:56:58
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:56:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, you you could have had a seasonal for $40,000 and you ended up paying 65 on per push. It is what it is. That was your call.
00:57:09
RICK JAMES
Yeah. I mean, that's the risk I take and you know risk reward.
00:57:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
it. Vegas, baby, roll the dice.
00:57:16
RICK JAMES
thanks Yeah.
00:57:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, see what happens.
00:57:17
RICK JAMES
Roll it. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose.
00:57:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
that's it and i mean and we it's not like not like anybody can say we did not give them all the information at hand you know we can give them everything rob says pope pre-season about i gotta i gotta give that dude credit he if you go back and listen to his pre-season when we did the episode with them in in early december or late november like he's pretty much fucking nailed it got pretty good
00:57:42
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:57:45
RICK JAMES
Yeah, they did. They definitely did.
00:57:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
he He pretty much nailed it.
00:57:47
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:57:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
So good for them.
00:57:50
RICK JAMES
It's a stone.
00:57:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good for the weather pros.
00:57:51
RICK JAMES
Yep.
00:57:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
But yeah, i mean, we give them all the information we have at hand and we don't try and swing them one way or another, but we do advise them like this is what we would recommend.
00:58:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, and, you know, in the end, it's still their decision. And we give them our reasons why we'd recommend it.
00:58:09
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:58:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
But, you know, in the end, it's still, you know, if they are gamblers and they want to roll the dice, then, hey, okay.
00:58:19
RICK JAMES
Yeah, works out.
00:58:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
No problemo. Um, we did have a, we, we had a theft this year that we're going to have to think about going forward with the salt shortages that, you know, we're going to to start thinking about how to secure our salt. I can't believe I'm even fucking saying that. Normally you're worried about, you know, somebody walking in with a five gallon bucket and walking into your snow barn and, or salt barn and taking a fucking five gallon bucket without permission.
00:58:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, now you got people fucking hot wire machines and emptying the fucking bins into a dump truck or something. it's uh that's some wild shit but i think you're gonna see a lot of guys with uh i think you're gonna see a lot more guys going brian this year
00:58:52
RICK JAMES
Yeah. I think so. Yep.
00:59:03
RICK JAMES
and So what the what I've been hearing from a lot of guys. So mean, why not? It works. You know, it works really well. So saves the guys some money.
00:59:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
well i guess you know i
00:59:12
RICK JAMES
So.
00:59:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
And we said that on a show maybe a couple episodes back where even if you're a smaller guy or a medium guy like myself, you can you can kind of work something out if you have three or four you know guys in the area that are on the smaller side. Work something out where you share the equipment and you share the expense.
00:59:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then it makes more sense. um Because I'll be the first one to tell you $150,000 cap expense to get into liquids for me is just not worth it.
00:59:35
RICK JAMES
one
00:59:43
RICK JAMES
Great.
00:59:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
but But I will tell you this. I just talked to my salt provider today. They are fully restocked. There is no more shortage, and the price has come back down to preseason levels. so Shocking.
00:59:57
RICK JAMES
That's good.
00:59:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm shocked by that.
01:00:01
RICK JAMES
Stock up now would pay up front.
01:00:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. Well, I told him. I said, yeah, we're going to start loading the bins in June. But that's all I got, bud.
01:00:09
RICK JAMES
You know, yeah, no, I don't have much.
01:00:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
You got anything else?
01:00:12

01:00:23
RICK JAMES

01:00:24
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:00:26
RICK JAMES

01:00:27
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:00:28
RICK JAMES
Wow. You don't usually sleep when you're plowing.
01:00:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, but you get to go home when it's over. You don't have to fly home.
01:00:36
RICK JAMES
Yeah, you're true.
01:00:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, let's hear some commercials. We'll come back and we'll wrap this up.

The SnowJobs Podcast
Ben is a bully?
01:02:30
RICK JAMES

01:02:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah, i was going to say, I would not have guessed that. Ben's usually taking it.
01:02:36
RICK JAMES
or Yeah, Ben's always taken. yeah Ben or Mason. Mason will get it too. Those two just strapped their helmets on and get ready.
01:02:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
I was going to say Ben would not be the bully in that group that I'd pick out. It'd be more like Jackie or or Snow Boss.
01:02:51
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yep. Yeah, you nailed that. Yeah, there'll be a, or Andy. Andy likes to push some buttons. Just overbullet.
01:03:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah I to the bullet in a while. I got to call him.
01:03:04
