Brentford's Performance Concerns

Global Sports Podcast Network
So then Brentford look to move on this weekend after after defeat at Fulham, a defeat that everyone was very disappointed about. I think it's the most negative podcast we did the other day. The good thing about this, if if you can call it a good thing, is Brentford only have six days between the two games, five days even between the two games, Monday and Saturday, to respond. And I do hope this week in training, Thomas Frank has made it very clear to them that we need to see an improvement and that Monday was way below the standards that we need to be setting this season. In terms of team news at the weekend, do we have to make changes for a reaction following Fulham? I think there's two ways you go about it. I think some managers like to keep the same 11 for a chance to redeem themselves almost. I think others may feel the need to shake things up in order to cause a change, essentially. The key thing to look out for again, I guess, is if Christopher Eyre does return. Obviously, Thomas Franklin is very clear prior to the Fulham game that he'd likely make the Fulham game. So, unless he's had a setback, it could well be possible that he slips back in.

Tactical Speculations for Brentford

And I would expect him to play left back- and Vandenberg to move over to right back. Do Brentford drop Mads Rodslev is going to be a big question as well. If we are going to persist in playing out from the back and if we want to make this style work, I think we need to, unfortunately. And I would probably have to go with Vandenberg right right back and Vitaly Yenel at left back if um Christopher Ayer is not back for this game. And I would bring Matthias Jensen in that midfield next to Norgaard. And what I hope Jensen will bring is just a bit of calmness on the ball. Someone who can play that diagonal pass to release the front three. Someone who can move the ball from back to front. The only sight I might have is whether defensively he can bring what Jenault brings in that position but also at home against you know another mid-table side maybe you could expect Norgard to take most of that load and Jensen to be allowed to be a bit more creative I think further ahead of him but i'd I'd leave the likes of Damned Guard in I'd leave the front free as it is I think everyone had an off day on Monday. You can't drop everybody. I think we've seen this season that we can be very good going forward. That's an area that I'm not still too concerned about. I think the issues still relate to our style of play in terms of progressing the ball up the pitch and whether we're good enough to move the ball up the pitch on the ground or whether we need to mix it up and adapt it a bit more.

Bournemouth's Recent Form

But like otherwise, I can't see any other changes. I mean, if you look at the bench we had the other day, it is the likes of Jensen. I think there's an argument to bring him back in as we've just spoken about. Otherwise, Shada, I don't think he's done enough. And Carvalho, I would like to see more of Carvalho, but the issue for me still kind of is there from when he first joined, as in I don't really see where he fits into the squad. I would suspect it's more as that number 10 where Damsgaard has been playing. I think one bad game from Damsgaard doesn't warrant him being dropped because he's been arguably one of our best players this season. In terms of Bournemouth, they will be full of confidence and we can expect them to be quite offensive and very, very good in the press, which most notably is a concern to me. The likes of Antoine Semenya, obviously it was covered on the crossover episode yesterday, is having his best ever season in front of goal. Ivan Ilsen up front is starting to put together a little goal scoring run after taking time to adapt to the Premier League. I think they're a very exciting team. Their fullbacks are brilliant. The likes of Kerkhez is brilliant against Manchester City. And their style and their aggressiveness and their intensity will mean that they make this a very very tricky game.

Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford podcast.

Brentford vs Bournemouth: Historical Context

00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then, Brentford are unbeaten in five against Bournemouth since playoff first leg defeat in 2021, which is obviously a game that we later overturned with the famous home win in front of a half full GTEC during the COVID period before Brentford then went on to win at Wembley for Premier League promotion Brentford's last game against Bournemouth was a 2-1 win on the south coast in May with a flurry of late goals all three strikes were late on in that game and the usual suspects and Burma and Wissart scored for Brentford. That was a good game against a good team again back in May and Brentford played very well that day and got a great result and I think Bournemouth are a team that we do tend to have a decent record in I think Fulham was also a team we tend to have a decent record against so I wouldn't read into that too much I think the important thing is to look at how both teams come into this game and I think what we definitely need to see from Brentford is an improvement in performances. I feel that to an extent we have got away with it with recent results because I think we're very unconvincing against Ipswich, we're very unconvincing against Sheffield Wednesday but ultimately we got away with it, we got the results we needed, we got three points or we got three in the cup. Even against Fulham, we came minutes away from getting a result, which would have been completely undeserved, if we're really honest with ourselves. And even then a 2-1 scoreline on paper makes the game look and feel closer than it perhaps was, which again, there's a sense that we're getting away with it a little bit with the results that we're achieving in our last two or three performances. Bournemouth, of course, are a good team. They just had seven points on Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City, beating both Arsenal and City at

home. They are brilliant in the press. They're very intense, even against the likes of City, whereas you may see teams like Brantford back off maybe a bit more in certain games against teams that are perceived to be better. I think how they've shown themselves in the last few weeks, they'll only be even more intense, if anything, against Brantford. That, to me, means we we need need to be much much better on the ball or we just simply need to adapt we simply need to find another way to get forward and I think that's easier said than done without a target kind of presence up front we're gonna have to maybe get a bit creative but the worst thing I think we can do is just keep doing the same thing during the game if the game is not going our way we need to adapt because against Fulham we fail to adapt we fail to wrestle any control and although we were defending something ultimately pressure tells and as lucky as the Fulham goals were, I expect pressure to tell again. And I think Bournemouth, I think their strength is in their attack and they can be dynamic. And I think they will score goals if we allow them lots of opportunities. On the flip side, I still think Brentford will score goals. We created almost nothing against Fulham, but I think I've seen enough this season as a whole, even in those games against Ipswich and Wolves, where we did concede two or three, but I've seen enough in those games to know that we are a very good team going forward this season and we are difficult to stop when the likes of Mbuma and Wissler are on it. We are very difficult to stop. Again, I would like to see more goal contributions from the likes of Damsgaard and Keane Lewis Potter. I think it's the last step for them because they have been much better recently. And we're looking for Mbuma to return to form because I don't think he was great against Fulham. I think he was marked out the game. I think teams are now starting to identify him as our key player and they may double up on him and they may really focus on containing him because then they think they can stop Brentford. So it's a challenge for Mbumo to get back to his best to try and get on the score sheet at home again. He's got a great record at the GTEC and it's also a challenge for Wisser to give them something else to think about. Maybe they focus less on Mbuma and obviously the same with Keane Lewis-Potter on the left. We need to start seeing some end product from him, I think, with teams maybe focusing more on Mbuma and Wisser. It may allow him some more space on that left. But I'm not overly worried about Brentford coming forward I think like I said we've shown and the statistics back it up the amount of goals we've scored this season we've shown that we can be creative we've shown that we can score goals from being dynamic in attack and also from the like some things like set pieces with Dam's guard delivery and the likes of Pinnock and Collins in the box. However, I do expect Brentford to lose again if we play similarly in general to how we did against Sieves, Witch and Fulham. I think Bournemouth are again a better standard team to those we have beaten at the GTEC this season. I think it is notable that we have played and beaten all of the bottom four at the GTEC and there are only four wins this

Predictions and Final Thoughts

season. I think it does pose a question of how good Brentford really are. And these are the types of games like Fulham was and we didn't make, we didn't capitalise at all against Fulham. But these are the types of games where we can go out there and show how good we are and a win this weekend would ease things again it would place Brentford on the verge of the top half again if not inside the top half and it would fill us with optimism about what the future may hold with the likes of Everton and Leicester games coming up after the international break. What we don't want to do is lose again here and then it will be a long two-week international break with a lot of the players going away with their international teams. It will be a long two-week break before we can react. So it's good that the game's coming on Saturday a reaction is possible it's at home we've got a good record at home having said that I am not too confident going into this one I know Lydia predicted us to win 3-2 in the crossover episode yesterday unfortunately I'm going to go 2-1 to Bournemouth and I hate doing this I've not predicted Bremer to lose much this season I think I've only really predicted Bremer to lose away against the likes of City, Liverpool, Tottenham etc but I am just not convinced with this at the moment it's the performances that are concerning me more than the results. I think that we will be victims to a very intense press and I think we will struggle to play out again. And I think that will result in Bournemouth having a couple of guilt-edged opportunities opportunities which they will likely take on enough occasions. I do think we'll hopefully give them a bit more to worry about the other way than we gave Fulham. So I think we'll score. I think you can always back us to score. Even at Fulham we managed to score and we almost got a second despite not playing very well at all. So I do always back Brentford to score, but I just think we need better personnel at the back there. I think we need the likes of Ruka Henry now. I think it's starting to show again that we don't have natural fullbacks in the squad. I think having Thiago back as well when he comes into the squad will offer something a bit more similar to Ivan Tony, something a bit more similar to a target man we can aim for, we can play a bit more direct too. I know that's not how we want to go about things. But I feel like it's necessary with the current squad we have, if I'm being completely honest. But no, there's plenty to work on. There's always going to be teething problems with the way we're playing. And I just hope for a much improved performance. And I think there is a possibility of us getting a result. But yeah, I guess it's over to the players now at the weekend to bounce back and give a statement following the game against Fulham. Because it's not too late for Bramford to get dragged down the table despite the teams at the bottom struggling, despite them barely getting a win between them. I think that's what's saving us. But we want a season free of worry. We want a season where we can look up. We want a season where we can aim high and dream about Europe or the potential of. And it would be nice to have an outside shot at it. So these are the sorts of games, again, that we need to try and take advantage of. And it becomes more important for the longer our waveform continues to dip.
