This is your Midweek Match Preview, as we look ahead to our trip to Villa Park during the first round of midweek Premier League games this season.   We analyse whether Vitaly Janelt should return from the start, our lack of away win against Villa and whether this is a good time in the season to visit.

Team Lineup and Tactical Changes

00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So and let's go straight in and have a look at team news. So I think it's very difficult to drop anyone after the weekend's game. And you might be looking at something similar to the Leicester side. I guess the only doubt from that is Matias Jenson, the status of his injury that he picked up during the game.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thomas Frank said it was precautionary, but he did feel something in his hamstring and, you know, ham hamstrings, when they go, they are, you know, very, um, sensitive areas of the body. So it would not be, it would not surprise me if we saw Jenson out for this one and perhaps for two or three more weeks following.
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
If that was to be a case, that would be an easy route to get Vitaly Yannell back into the squad. And I do suspect this is a game where he would want him in there. I think, well, usually anyway, Yannell is always someone that's in the team. I wonder whether it was pre-planned that he would get arrested at the weekend so he could freshen up the midfield away at Villa Park in midweek.

Squad Depth and Substitute Analysis

00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also do think that Thomas Frank was probably more inclined to play with an extra attacker at home to a side like Leicester, as opposed to a way against a side like Aston Villa, I think he'd want one more perhaps in the middle. I think in terms of control and us being able to play out from the back, I think we probably may need one extra in the middle, but the difficulty that probably wasn't foreseen at the weekend is that
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kerry Shada who probably would have been the one to come out got himself three goals and an assist I think it is very very difficult to drop him in those circumstances but I also I must say I wouldn't be too surprised if he if he was dropped back to the bench for this one I just don't think you can reasonably drop Whistler and Abumo, I don't think Abumo in particular has been very good in recent weeks, I think he was again relatively quiet at the weekend against Leicester but ultimately I think it is very very difficult to um to to drop Shada and it's going to be, is' it's a good problem for Thomas Fred to have, I don't think he's had
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
this kind of problem very often in his Brentford career. as As we spoke on yesterday's episode, we have so many attacking options now.

Aston Villa's Recent Performance Review

00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And, you know, it's a brilliant problem to have. I think if Shana is on the bench, we'll see him come on. And, you know, again, there's no reason he can't have that confidence. I think the next step for him now, we've seen him put in a brilliant performance, his consistency and doing it on a regular basis. And I do what they think.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa away is a different proposition to Leicester at home in that regard. We're also yet to see the impact on this being the first midweek Premier League fixture. Obviously every midweek game you've had so far has been a car about cut fixture against a team of a lower division. So whether anyone needs a rest is is unknown at this stage.

Villa's Champions League Impact on League Performance

00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suspect it remains too soon to see a Tiago start. Carvalho is still itching for more minutes. I think he deserves more minutes in a way, but I don't think you can drop Michael Dam's guard. I think Dam's guard is has been brilliant this season. I think he's our best player. um and And that for me is where Carvalho sits into the squad. So I think he is Just a tad unlucky there. I mean, I know he can play up front, I know he can play on the left, but he's probably not first choice in any of those positions either. I think his very best position probably is number 10, and that's where you'd want to see him. So, again, maybe if we're behind, the likes of Thiago, the likes of Carl Violio, the likes of Chardo, if he is on the bench, will be very, very useful to have. In terms of a villa perspective, we haven't been able to get a crossover due to the tight turnaround before midweek, but
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
The weekend I watched their game against Chelsea, they looked very, very poor by their standards. They looked a shadow of themselves. Martinez, the keeper we saw come off injured at halftime. I've taken a couple of hits in the first half. If he is missing in midweek, I think that would be a big boost to Brentford. I think, you know, Martinez is regarded by many as the best keeper in the world. We know his antics at times can be off-putting for the opposition.
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He must be a very influential figure in that Villa dressing room.

Challenges Against Villa's Strong Lineup

00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if he's unavailable, I think that would be a big boost for Brentford in midweek. Obviously Villa are no stranger to midweek trips this season having been in the Champions League and I think it is starting to tell in their league form. I think it's nowhere near seven in all competitions now.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, having said that at their best, they are brilliant. We all know about Ollie Watkins. They've got so many attacking midfielders in the area all on their day can perform. You've got the likes of Phila Jean, Leon Bailey, Morgan Rogers, Ross Barkley. And then is it time for John Duran to get a start in the league after all his superstar exploits? I mean, if they chose to perhaps give Ollie Watkins a rest or play both of them in this one,
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
that I'd give us something else to think about. john Someone like John Joanne would be fresh. I can see Leon Bayden start last weekend either. um And, you know, I suspect those are things that we might have to think about and, you know, they're very capable of placements and very capable of getting goals at this level. So after the break then, I will be analyzing the game further, talking about our previous battles against Aston Villa and what to expect on this occasion.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel. So let's get into the preview at, as the bees visit Villa Park in midweek. The first thing to tell you is Brentford have never won at Villa Park, although there have been a few draws in recent years, five actually in the last six games since we've been there, dating back to the championship era and including last season's three, three draw when Brentford were two and you're down, and I recall on that afternoon, the comeback came from nowhere. and We actually went three, two up in that game before Ali Watkins headed home late on. It's been a different story against Aston Villa at home, however, with four wins, one draw and one defeat against them, that defeat coming last season. Again, when we were winding up in the game, that was when Ben Mee got sent off, the tide turned. Villa got red cards late on in the game, but too late for us to affect it.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously that was a game where Ollie Watkins scored and celebrated in front of the West End. And Brentford fans didn't take to that too well ever since.

Brentford's Tactical Approach and Season Ambitions

00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the Villa on their day are going to be very good. I see this game is very similar to the Newcastle game. So, you know, depending on the result in midweek, we might be doing a very similar preview in a few days time. I think Newcastle and Villa are both sides who are on not not the best form.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
but they are both sides who, you know, have the potential to be quality, quality size, top five, top six sides, you know, um, villa showed last season, um, no, with their champions league finished, it it was quite comfortable. when It always looks like they were going to get in the champions league. Who knows what he's doing. The likes of Ali Watkins under his management has gone to a completely new level. Um,
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
so many good players that we spoke about um before the break, so many good attackers, even in defense, obviously normally of Martinez in goal, solid, likes a concert at the back, Pao Torres, you know, that that they are a very, very good side. However, having said that, they'll obviously they're in the Champions League for a reason. They played last Wednesday against Juventus, drew Neil Neil. They didn't really turn up on Sunday against Chelsea, but obviously Brentford have an extra day to prepare, Brentford had.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
a relatively easy fixture by contrast. You know, I don't think we exerted too much on Saturday afternoon. I think, like I said, the last half an hour resembled a bit of a training session. And I think Lester checked out of that game quite early on as well, looking ahead to midweek. So having said that, is this the best time to play Aston Villa? You know, having them playing just a few days before they're tired, it's not the first midweek they've had to play in a row.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
we're going into a very busy period. you know On the flip side, that they do have to win at some point. They will start winning at some point. I'll be very surprised if they finish 12th, which is I think where they currently is now, I think with with the tightness of the Premier League, obviously see if they beat us, they'll be above us and and we'll be back down to around 11th for 12th.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I very much think they're sitting in the hunt for Europe again this season, qualifying through the league. Obviously they they've done actually pretty well in the Champions League. Bayern Munich have been to Villa Park this season and lost Juventus have come and obviously say only managed to get a point. So that this this is going to be a very hard game, but we do have to go there whilst the season. I don't think there's any better time to do that given the current state that they're in.
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Brentford here have got to be positive. I think we've got to look to get get on the front foot, play to our strengths. We can't spend too long under the cosh. Although we defended very well at Everton, I think it's clear that our strengths this season are going forward and now being creative and getting the likes of Dam's guard in space and players running off him so he can he can find them. And if we can get the first goal at Villa Park, that could be big against a side maybe struggling slightly with confidence.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Having said that and on the flip side, Brentford should not be struggling with confidence. There is nothing for us to lose. And there, there is no reason um for us not to be confident. You know, we're, we're in a situation after struggling for the most part of last season where we are looking up, the league is so, so tight, but ultimately we are the same distance away from Liverpool as we are the bottom three. And I say that because.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
it will take the bottom three a long time to make up that gap and you know you're you're looking at a situation now at Brentford long temp 20 points five more wins perhaps in the whole season will do it for us in terms of staying up so I think we can be relatively confident about that and then that this means we can we can use these fixtures especially against these challenging sides who are likely to be going for Europe, obviously see Villa and Newcastle at the weekend as well, Chelsea after that, we can use these games to really go at them and really see what we can do. And and and if Brentford were to win at Villa Park on Wednesday night, ah you know, there would be many Brentwood fans getting very, very excited about the league table, excited ahead of another home game against a similar league.

Match Prediction and Key Players

00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
struggling side. um Newcastle obviously got Liverpool in midweek and haven't been doing too well in their last couple of games either. It would be very exciting times and you know we can start potentially dreaming of of a shot at Europe and that is an amazing place of bread to be and I don't think there's too much pressure on the players to achieve that but to have that to aim for is absolutely fantastic. I think However, that it will be a tight game. I think Villa will be difficult to beat. My prediction, I will go with a one-all. I think Ollie Watkins is bound to score, I think, for Villa against Brentford. It's happened in both games last season. He scored twice at Villa Park against Brentford last season. and He's not done too well this season in front of goal compared to in the past, but I think he is bound to score.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I personally don't have anything against Ollie Watkins. I think he did a lot for Brentford. I think um his celebration at the GTet last season was inadvised. I do think he was probably genuine when it said he says it was aimed at one person, but I think he should have known the reaction it would have got. And I think he should have rose above it on that occasion because, you know, the vast majority of the time he gets a very, very good reception from 99% of Brentford fans. Obviously that won't be the case anymore, but I don't personally have anything against him, but I do think he's a brilliant striker. He will be a danger and and I can see him scoring again on Wednesday night. I want to go with Wisser for the goal for Brentford. I think he's on form. I think he's always in the right positions. I think if we're going to put a cross in the box, the most likely person to get on the end of it is Wisser. If we're going to put someone through, if Dam's guard's going to release someone, the most likely person he'll release is Wisser. Just because of the positions he gets in, just because obviously he's playing down the middle,
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's on form. I think what one player I i do want to see more from is Brian Abumo. I think we've he's been a bit off at last few games. He's not really getting shots away. It's too often he gets a ball on the right hand side and he kind of cuts inside. it's It's very predictable and he might try and get a cross in, but it it doesn't really beat the first man. I think we need to see more from him, especially in these types of games where we won't be so relentless in attack. I don't think like we were against obviously Leicester and Wolves and Ipswich and perhaps Bournemouth to an extent as well before that out at the G-Tech. I think this will be one of those tighter away games where we don't get as many chances and I think then
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Puma, when he gets the ball in those wide areas, um he needs to make more of it and he needs to be more consistent with it. I think, you know, it's getting to the point that if he if he did leave to a big side and I think he will do, you know, I can see them getting frustrated with that quicker than perhaps we do at Brentford. And equally in recent weeks, he's been bailed out by the fact that Wiss has been so great. Sharda stole the headlines the other week. Damned Skaar's been performing brilliantly, I think.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
the load isn't all on Brian and Bumo to do everything for us which I think is is is right and and and it's good but I think we we want to see more from him as well because you know otherwise I don't i don't think he's un-dropable and I do think Shana's been better than him obviously in the last game so if you're going by form and you want to have another mid further in is it in Bumo you drop? I don't think so I don't think you can really drop him but you know if he carries on. Not really convincing. I don't think anyone's in the place in the team should be absolutely guaranteed. But anyway, yeah my prediction is one all. And that will do for today as we look ahead to our midweek Premier League fixture.
