Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself Daniel where today I will be analysing just how Brentford adapted to going ten down to 10 men early on to maintain a point at Goodison Park at the weekend.

Red Card Challenges for Fulham, Brighton, and Brentford

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then Brentford were one of three teams to finish a Premier League game with 11 men on Saturday alone.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fulham had lost Joachim Anderson to injury earlier in the day although um they did not have any other available subs to replace him so they finished the game with 10 men. Fulham were 2-1 down when this happened with about 10 minutes to go and went on to lose 4-1 thanks to further late goals from all the hubs and wanderers.

Historical Impact of Red Cards on Brentford

00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton on the other hand had Carlos Belabor sent off at 2-0 up um in about the 70th minute I believe um when when they were 2-0 up and the game ended up 2-1 to them so they did concede away at Bournemouth at the time but obviously still went on to hold the game. Brentford on the other hand did not concede any ground
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
after going down to 10 despite this being in the first half and much earlier than the other two red cards on the same day.

Arsenal's Red Card Struggles

00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Last season, Brentford in particular suffered two red cards, Regulon versus Burnley, I remember that game well, it was a big game at the time. um When we were looking like we might get sucked into a relegation battle, obviously Burnley were right in one. Brentford went to turf more, Sergio Regula inside two or three minutes, handled in the box. It was deemed to be denial of a goal scoring opportunity because ah he handled a shot that was going on target. Not only did Regula see red, Burnley got a penalty which they scored.
00:02:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I believe they only went on to win that game 2-1 so again Brentford did cope pretty well and you could argue the score was 1-1 if you don't include the penalty that was a direct result of the red card. On the other hand we also lost Ben Mee against Aston Villa this is at home in December time last season the Ollie Watkins game where he did the celebration aimed at a fan in the West End.
00:02:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We went on to lose that game despite being one mill up at the time of the red card on 71 minutes. Arsenal are another example. We've seen that they've been quite well documented this season to receiving red cards.
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
often for kicking the ball away in the case of Detland Rice and Leandro Trossard. They've received three red cards this season and have slipped up in all three games, failing to

Premier League's Adaptability with 10 Men

00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
win any of those. And obviously two of the three would have been games that they would be expected to usually win. Um, the third one was an away draw at the Etihad where they actually came so, so close to winning, but ah so many people watch this game this season. We're not an Arsenal podcast, but It was very clear that Arsenal sat back to the extreme in that second half against Manchester City and Manchester City perhaps lacked ideas.

Brentford vs Everton: Tactical Analysis

00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And obviously we've seen more recently as well, maybe that result is um looking less and less impressive by the day with Manchester City's recent form and and how they're struggling at the moment.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I think all these examples um clearly demonstrate that it's very difficult to play with 10 men. um Why is that the case? I think technical quality in the league is getting higher. I think teams are more tactical, teams are more adaptable, teams know exactly what to do against 10 men. um And every team in the Premier League these days has very, very good players. You look towards the bottom of the league, you look at teams like Wolves,
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateusz Konya, I think could play for a top six side. And I think throughout the Premier League, you could say the same for a lot a lot of players in a lot of teams. um For example, for Brentford, I think the likes of Brian and Brumo could and probably will play for a top six side one day. So I think it is difficult to hold a team out when you've got a man less, especially if that team are comfortable in the ball, they can wear you out.
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
They will always

Game Management and Defensive Strategies

00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
find the spare man and they and they and they will know exactly how to do it and they will be comfortable dominating. And often it results in the team with 10 men sitting back a touch, whether that's a plan or whether that is just natural instinct to try and protect what you have in a certain circumstance where you're a man down. You so you find that the team of 10 men getting deeper and deeper.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um not going forward themselves with regularity at all, and ultimately, pressure often pays um with the quality that we see in other sites. Having said that, I think for a number of reasons, and we covered this in Thursday's preview last week, that Everton are a slightly more different team to um a lot of other Premier League sides. I think in their style, they are an outlier. I think Sean Dyche as a manager is an outlier in the Premier League. I'm not suggesting it's worse in any way. I'm just suggesting it's a very different style. and Of course, that style can get results, but I believe it is centered on a less technical base. I think you can play Sean Dyche's style perhaps with players of less quality.
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
against teams of a higher quality. It is very much more focused on physicality, crosses into the box, being strong in either box, being, you know, putting your body on the line defensively. And, you know, typically throughout Sean Dyche's career and obviously currently he's got the likes of Caballon and Beto up front who are more big targets to folk to look to get balls in. And I think, I think to myself as a result of Brentford then having 10 men are Everton the team we'd like to have 10 men against the most and I do think that is the case I do think although Everton did have more possession than Brentford with Brentford having 10 men I don't think it was as noticeable as it would have been if we were playing a lot of other teams like Southampton for example and I think Everton are a better team than Southampton but in terms of Southampton if we were to go down to 10 men against them I think they would keep the ball so well
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think they would eventually wear us down and find the spare man. Everton, I don't think that was the case. I think they huffed and puffed a lot. And in fact, the whole idea of a team of 10 men coming a bit deeper, defending a bit more, I think it didn't help them in a way because the likes of Pinnock and Collins will eat up, head crosses into the box every day of the week. And I think we saw more of that, ah especially in the second half of the weekend. I thought both of them were immense and I thought that Brentford still did have some technical quality in that midfield and still were able to get forward at times to relieve the pressure. And I don't think it was ever really relentless. So I think from Everton's point of view, they would have been slightly disappointed.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um After the break, what I'm going to look at then is some other things at Brentford Change and how we adapted ourselves, no matter who we're up against, to going but to going down to 10 men as we did at the weekend.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. So then how did Brent forget a result, a first positive away results and a first clean sheet at the weekend with just 10 men.

Igor Tiago's Impact on Brentford

00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also whilst that man being sent off being our captain, our leader, someone who we can rely on set the tone, how did we manage to do that without him? First of all,
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is something I've criticized Brent before this season but I thought during this game our game management as was good and we were very adaptable. I thought in terms of first of all just taking those few extra seconds out of the game I thought you saw several times and we very rarely do this. Flecken grabbing the ball, going down, soaking up a few seconds. And I think although it's not what people want to see in the game, I think it is something that everybody does. And I think it does give a performance advantage. It frustrates the other team and it ultimately does wind down the clock. Only four minutes were added on at the end of this game. So we,
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't over time waste. i don't I don't think we necessarily were blatantly time wasting, but I do think that we were more sensible. Flecken was less hasty and obviously at times we know um that he can be a little bit um keen sometimes to try and help us on the break the other end and sometimes it can punish us.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought we were clever with it this this um weekend, and we realized that you know we were going to be under the course, we're a man down, and there is an element of trying to protect what we have and just staying strong and compact. Additionally, alongside that, I think, obviously in the second in the first half, we saw Brentford do nearly every goal kick short, playing out from the back. Again, as per usual, occasionally when it comes off, it looks good and it gets it into good areas.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
there are also occasions where we lose a ball far too high up the pitch for my liking I still hope to see improvements in that regard but we saw after the red card much more longer much more of the time there are much fewer um short goal kicks and in fact when we did the short goal kicks I thought we were pressed less intensely when it happened um because Everton were also wary of the one over the top as well so I thought that was um very positive to see us do that because it's an area of the game and game management that I've not been too confident on at times this season. um i but That goes in hand hand in hand with our mentality. I thought what we're able to do is frustrate Everton and keep them at bay on the day. Another element that
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
is new and I think really made a difference was having someone like Igor Tiago who can come on up front now I didn't necessarily foresee this being the game where we need and that type of striker but as Nathan Collins said in the interview anything can happen in football we were down to 10 and that changes the game completely in my opinion and Igor Tiago you just got to look at him and you can see that he's more of that physical target man presence who who would win the jewels

Brentford's Tactical Flexibility

00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
against opposition defenders and win fouls high at the pitch. And we saw that from him against Everton, against the likes of James Tarkowski and Jair Brantthwaite, who are perhaps up there with the most physical centre backs in the league against one of the most physical teams in the league. He was winning flick-ons. He was winning fouls high at the pitch and something like that to
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
drag you up the pitch to relieve pressure going the other way. And maybe even to create something yourself going forward is invaluable, in my opinion. And he presents such a lovely contrast to a striker like Johan Wisser. Johan Wisser you would more see running in behind. um You would see him as a finisher. um His link up with his feet is good.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I'm not suggesting those things won't be good on equal Tiago as well But you could just see the differences between them and maybe where whistle acts Tiago strengths line if Tiago does lack Maybe more with the ball at his feet or in terms of being in front of goal and finishing a regular basis That's a whistle strengths lie and I think that is incredibly helpful to have as game state changes and as momentum swings in it in nearly every Premier League game and especially as Brentford come up against the better teams, I think it's having someone like Tiago to come off the bench may help to relieve that pressure and may may provide us with an output and just something for the opposition to think about, even if we don't use it, even if we still continue to go short with Tiago on the pitch, it is something for the opposition to think about and and it's in their mind as an option. um And, you know, we we could catch them off guard or or we can use it to our advantage in some way.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
that That leads me to the point that I would be very interested to see Tiago and Whistle play together one day. and You can imagine him winning a flick on, Whistle wanting him behind, um and trying to score. I think that would be wonderful. And obviously, you if you have Brian there doing similar things, um when he has a better day, I don't think he had his best game at the weekend. It's something that I'm really looking forward to seeing more of, and and the relationship between the three of them in particular,
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um, growing with something that I want to see. I would only say in terms of fitting them all into the team, I do much prefer Whistler up front

Squad Depth and Substitution Strategies

00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
than on the left. I think the left should be fought out between KLP and Shada when KLP is not leading a left back, but You know, maybe maybe there's certain situations where you want your best finishes on the pitch and you want Wisser, Tiago um and Puma together. it's It's a very good problem to have after for so long, Brentford, you know, struggling with injuries and not having the numbers. It wasn't long ago, Kevin Shana was starting up front um and only four or five weeks ago. um And we were saying that we didn't really have a natural strike at the moment. so
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is very good to see that, and it is very good to see a bench at the weekend with the likes of Carl Vale, it didn't even come on. Igor Tiago and Kevin Schade as well. to What I would like to say as my final point on how I believe we've got a result with 10 men at the weekend is that we continue to have a strong defense. And although that hasn't resulted in clean sheets this season, I think the likes of Collins and Pinnock defensively are simply animals, I think.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Collins is always willing to put his body on the line. Pinnock's great in the air. I think, again, the way Everton play and wanted to play, I don't think it suited them to go up against the back line of Collins, Pinnock, and bat Vandenberg as well, who's a big guy in himself. um I thought Collins and Pinnock ate those crosses up all day. And you know if if you get a shot away, the likes of Collins would be there to block it. And I thought Flacken as well was commanding at set pieces, made some strong saves.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
and defensively, Keenless Potter was strong and left back as well. And there were some signs of good football moving forward to, to relieve pressure at times. I don't ever think for a second that it was relentless. So that is my summary of how we got result against 10 men. I do think that this is something, this is, this is a position that every team will be in. I believe at some point during the season, and it could happen to Brentford again.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think what we can say is we can use this as a blueprint to go forward. Um, you know, if you go down to 10 minute, any game in the premier league, I think that that the sick secret is last line of defense, putting your body on the line, working hard, covering ground and being able to find an outborn, being able to be adaptable, maybe being able to go longer in this, in this ah circumstance. So.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was very proud of the team at the weekend. And I do think that, um, the reception the team received that the final assault was justified. Um, but that will do for today. And we've had two days of mulling over the Everton game at the weekend. Thank you for listening to the daily brand of a podcast.
