Brentford's Lineup and Key Player Updates

news. The starting lineup was unchanged from the Bournemouth game with Pinnock and BOMO and Whissa all being pass fit from minor knocks which kept them out of their respective national sides. What I didn't expect from our Thursday preview was Igor Tiago to be ready to have an impact on the team and it was a great sight to see him on the bench the reception he received from the away end starting from about before the game if I'm if I'm all honest but before the game and carried on until he stepped onto the pitch and when he stepped on the pitch as well was absolutely brilliant I'm sure that would have been an amazing feeling for him and he got the vast majority of the players at the end I think it's a
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
culmination of us having signed him actually in January, some 10 months ago, us always being aware that Ivan Tony would be moving on and therefore he's coming in to replace someone of that stature. The fact that he's out um club record signing 30 million. I think that has all contributed to an element of excitement from the away end and we just really wanted to see him in action. And I think there's going to be so much more to come from him.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the next few weeks and I am excited how he could work either alongside Whissa or as an alternative option from Whissa because I think it's clear just from looking at them both just from seeing Igor Tiago's 20 minutes that he gave us on Saturday how the two can be different and how the two can complement each other and how in some circumstances what we might need one more than we need the other and that is a great option to have as we look to continue being quite a strong attacking team, which we have done this season. and um Although he's unchanged, I do want to credit again, Keen Lewis Potter, who again played at left back, but did not seem to lose much going forward. I think what we see, as I said, against Bournemouth, Vandenberg on the other side, even more so when Lewis Potter is at left back, we see him almost maintaining his position. He doesn't really fly forward on that right hand side.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
he essentially makes it a back three when we've got the ball and we're like we're coming forward and I've got a credit key in Lewis Potter, he must cover more ground than most players in the side because he does get up, he does get down, he doesn't look out of place defensively and he is still involved in a lot of attacking actions that we create.

Player Performances and Tactical Insights

So I was very happy to see him there again and and I would.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think until Iyer is back, or until Rico's Henry is back, I think he perhaps is the best option in that area of the pitch, especially if Norguard is going to be missing now the next three games as a result of the red card. Let's have a look at Everton then. Dwight Menil returns to the squad after missing the last game. I put him out on Thursday in the preview. He normally has a good record against us. He's traditionally a wide player, but he's been playing down the middle this season.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I believe has the most goal, goal involvements of any Everton player this season. Jared Brown through it also returned into the team. He pulled out the England squad. So again, there was a bit of a question mark above his head, but we know from the links that he had last season with like other bigger clubs that he is thought of very highly. One player who did play and I was quite disappointed with at the weekend actually was Ilhaman and Dai we were given the impression I had the impression um from what I had seen of Everton so far this season that his technical quality was of a high level and I thought he may i maybe have been able to have an impact on the game, especially against 10 men, but I can't say I remember him um from the game at the weekend, which is not not a positive sign for him. I think possibly there is a suggestion that Sean Dyke's style might not suit him the most.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
given that they did seem very much long ball they did seem very much get crossed into the box and aside from that I thought they lacked a bit of other attacking imagination as I said particularly against 10 men where maybe you get your foot on the ball a bit more and try and just would wear us out or use the extra man to maintain control Anyway, after the break, I will be going through the first half and just how Brentford ended up with 10 men before halftime.
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford Podcast where I am going over our weekend clash at Goodison Park. I think there is quite a bit to talk about despite the nil-nil scoreline. I thought we made a fairly slow start to the game, conceding at succession of shots to Everton.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Most of them weren't incredibly dangerous. I would say that's the theme of our season. I think we've faced more shots than any other Premier League side. I do think this is partly by design. I think we are very happy to allow teams to shoot from long range. I think we are trying to prevent the high quality chances. I think we are playing the odds in our favor and I think we're almost telling teams that you can shoot from here but it's going to have to be an incredible effort for you to be rewarded for that and I think we do prioritise our inbox defending and minimising the chance of um having clear opportunities essentially and largely I think it's worked despite not having kept a clean shoot until this occasion because we've we've achieved some great results along the way
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought there was one save in the first half when there was a shot from the edge of the area. It deflected in the box, changed the direction of the ball to the towards the opposite bottom corner. Mark Flecken used his reset flexes, got down, brilliant save. And it's something that I fought in the past, especially last season at times. I just wanted Flecken to have a game or two where he wins his points on his own, where his contribution you can say is equated points and I feel like in a way although he was part of a defensive unit they were all strong at the weekend I thought Mark Flecken did his job very well and if they had scored that goal at 11 versus 11 I believe it was that shot the game could have changed and it and if we had gone down to 10 men at 1-0 down it would have been extremely difficult in my opinion to get back into the game because Everton would not have
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
overly push for a second, I don't think, but I think they would have been quite comfortable against 10 men to just try and see it out from the position that they would have been in. So I've got to give him credit. He has deserved a clean sheet that he's now achieved this season. I saw him get a bit of a stick from the Netherlands fans during the international break, but I can only comment on his brand for performances, and I do think he has greatly improved since he's arrived. And I think sometimes it's just very, very difficult to follow someone like David Rhea.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
who is arguably Brentford's best keeper of all time and I think whilst Flecker might not be at that level I do think he is at a strong level and I do think in terms of what Reyes gave us in terms of his ability on the ball as well as um pure goalkeeping. I think Fleckin has that in him too. So I'm very pleased for him and I am pleased that he made us a decisive contribution in preserving a point. I thought following the early stages of the game, I thought we did grow more into it
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought we had the best chance of the whole game in that first half when Whistler was slipped through by Dammsguard. It's a combination we've seen previously in recent weeks. Dammsguard is so good at getting in those pockets now and linking defence to attack. He's always looking to play forward and here he did the same slip Whistler in from the away end. It's difficult to see how close to the goal he is. It's difficult to see where it was on the side, but it was on the side. He was one on one.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
You would probably expect him to score that, but even the best do occasionally miss. har We've seen Harlan in the same pet position doing the same. I think he had several chances in in his game this weekend. Whissa is very, very unfortunate. I remember him going through against Ipswich and also missing one in that game, but he made up for it by scoring another two in that on that occasion. I think he'll be disappointed. I think Jordan Pickford as well, got out to him very quickly. I think he's a very good one-on-one keeper. I would still back, usually though, whistle went through one-on-one to finish better than that. I thought the finish was a bit low, bit a bit towards the middle of the goal. I think he needed to go high and and dink Pickford or near to pick a corner, in my opinion. But it's something that
00:10:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we had that moment again, I'd still pick Whistler. And I do think that he would put he would put it away normally. So then we come to the red card incident just before halftime. So there was a ball into the box. Whistler went for the ball. Norgar went for the ball. It was flashing across Pickford's goal. Pickford never made any contact with the ball either. Of course, Norgar and Whistler were trying to stick a foot out to get the ball to bundle it in is what you'd expect Norgar to do. If Norgar stood there and watched as the ball went past, we would be getting on his back. We would be saying, why is he not going for it there? The ball's there to be won. So in those circumstances, I think it is very hard for that to result in a red card.

Controversial Moments and Team Resilience

00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think there was any intent there from Christian Norgar to do any harm to Jordan Pickford. I think Pickford himself said that.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think it's also telling that all the Everton players in a very busy penalty area, none of them really complained for the penalty aside from Pickford, who was continuously pointing at his so-called injured knee in an attempt obviously to to raise alarm with the referee. But I think it is telling that none of his teammates joined in with that.
00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
with with those protestate protestations. I didn't hear or really see from the home end a great and outcry at the referee not giving anything because the referee did not even give a yellow for this. and And I have to also say communication inside the stadium. We were told on the screen that there was a VAR check. No one knew what it was for at first.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and for certain seats in the away and the roof is quite low down so we couldn't even see the screens and we didn't even realise it went to VAR but it is what it is that the VAR gave it what I would say is anything slowed down on a tape will look much worse the whole incident in reality happened in a few seconds Whistler and Norgar were diving in to try and get the ball to try and bundle it over over the line from what was a ah pretty good cross Like I said, Pickford was never in control of the ball either. There was a movement of Norgar obviously trying to get the ball and um Pickford also trying to position himself to block the ball. Turned out no one got the ball. I understand letter of the law. Norgar starts her up. It was high. I think the last second movement that he seemed to make didn't help him. I think that maybe is why VAR intervened. And if that hadn't happened at eye, maybe it's better not to have intervened.
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It's a shame that I think some common sense has got to be added. I mean, Norgard, I think who I was looking at has got to realize that this happened within a few seconds. Norgard did not necessarily have the time to think about, oh, I'm going to catch him here. Let me pull out last second. It all happens very quickly. He was going for the ball. There were bodies around him.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know he probably didn't know exactly where the ball was but he knew it was going to be in that area and you would try and stick your foot out to try and score a goal. I think it is harsh and I don't think the punishment that he received is proportionate to the crime and such. I don't think it was proportionate to put us at such a severe disadvantage for 55 minutes of the game. I don't think the punishment is proportionate for no guard to potentially miss the next three, which is what would happen um with a straight red card for serious foul play that is provided Brentford do not get their appeal allowed. Thomas Frank said in his post back interview that Brentford would be appealing the decision. I completely understand where he's coming from, because I agree, I agree it shouldn't have been a red card. However, on appeal, I do think I would be surprised if an appeal is allowed.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Given the studs were high, given that contact was made with Pickford's knee, I think it might be a thing where referees argue that letter of the law that perhaps is a red. But I would say that is the issue. why I don't think it should be. But in terms of an appeal, I do not expect it to be allowed. But equally, I can also see if this happened in another game. Another referee on VAR may choose not to intervene.
00:15:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in that case, the referee's call in this situation was no red card, not even a free kick, I don't believe. I think it was just it just went out for a goal kick. And that is where the inconsistency comes in, which you'll see is also a frustration of a lot of football fans in general.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that left Brentwood 10 men, there wasn't too much left in that first half. And after the break, I will be talking about how he coped in the second half a man down.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part three of the daily Brentford podcast with myself, Daniel. So let's move on to the second half. I was fearing the worst at halftime. I was fearing that almost mentally preparing myself to lose this game with how we've been defensively this season. And I think against any side, especially away from home with 10 men for over 45 minutes, you are going to assume that it will be difficult to get anything out of the game.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Having said that, I thought we started really well in the second half. I don't think initially you could tell it was 10 versus 11. We produced another brilliant chance with Jenson playing a lovely ball into King Louis Potter, who again got into those four positions, did what wingers do, despite him actually playing at left back when Everton had the ball. And this is where the one criticism King Louis Potter came in because He was running at the defender, he was being relatively direct, but he had Wisser to his right, and Wisser was free, relatively free. I think Wisser was in a pet position to get a shot off first time if the ball was right, and I don't think the defender would have got ah got in the way of that shot if that had happened, and I would have back Wisser to finish. Instead, KLP cut in. It was at a slightly worse angle than Wisser.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and his effort was straight at the keeper. And I think that's something we've seen from him a little bit too much. It is just that very last bit from King Lewis Potter that I think is is missing. And when somebody like Brian and Boomer isn't necessarily on it, and I don't think he was again at the weekend, maybe sometimes we need someone like King Lewis Potter to produce that piece of magic. So that's something I'm looking for him to get to the next level.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at the same time, I do appreciate he's also playing at left back. He has a lot more to think about at the moment. I think maybe if he's in that more attacking role and only has to worry about that attacking role, um there's an element of more freedom to his game. But he's in the right positions. he's sort He looks defensively solid despite being an attacking player, which is a testament to how hard he's working and to how well he's adapted. And I just do want to see him push on again.
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um to start finishing some of those chances to get, you know, if he even had half the numbers of Wisser and Numbumo, then he would be a terrific complement to those two in the in in a front three, all bombing off on left back as he is indeed currently doing.

Debut Analysis and Strategic Potential

00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then we saw it with 20 minutes to go, Igor Tiago make his long awaited Brentford debut, and he almost became a focal point um for us as we looked to go longer. We only had 10 men on the pitch, so we we weren't
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
typically trying as many short goal kicks as we did in the first half. And given that Everton are probably the most physical team in the entire Premier League, I thought he did brilliantly in terms of winning those draws, winning a foul, going up for headers against Elijah Tarkowski. I thought there was one occasion where he took the ball in particular, which is slightly humorous, where he did look a little bit hesitant on the ball. He didn't quite know where to go, that he didn't quite know where to pass it, but I think that will grow and he will progress on that as he gets fitter, as he gets to grips with the Premier League and also as he builds relationships with his teammates because it isn't that those are important factors. This is why I don't necessarily expect too much from Tiago this season. I don't think we need to label him as
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
The starting striker, I think, can very much be a squad player this season until he grows into things. And I feel like these are things that will will just grow um as he um continues to the club. but It was amazing to see him, and he he is going to be a great option to come um on or even start a couple of games in a few weeks' time um when we go into the tough Christmas period, where we do have some really tough fixtures.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
As well as Eagle Tiago, we did bring Kevin Charda on as well for Michal Damsgaard. I wasn't sure about this, not least because at exactly the same time, Everton put on Beto up front to play next to Calvert Lewin. So they made an attacking change. We made an attacking change, but to move towards a front three of Brian Charda and Tiago,
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ultimately resulted having one less man in midfield and I thought at this stage we never really got to the stage of creating anything after this because perhaps because we're slightly over running midfield perhaps because we took that player away from the midfield despite only having 10 men and couldn't progress the ball high enough for the likes of Charda for the likes of Mbumu to have an impact on the game so I think that may have been a mistake to bring on the extra attacker just as Everton did.

Brentford's Defensive Strategy and Future Outlook

00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Not least because, you know, we also wanted to react to what they were doing. and I think what we were doing previously was working with the extra midfield and it would allow us to progress the ball and keep the ball a bit better, which was ultimately leading to chances and obviously to the chance that Kenos Potter had and then obviously Jenson fired over the rebound.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, as the minutes progressed and as we got really late on, I did think Brentford did drop slightly deeper again, but we ultimately stay strong. I thought Everton were quite poor going forward. I thought they were quite one dimensional. I thought we know, we know exactly what they were going to do. All it took, all it would have taken though, is a ball to fall to them in the right way in the box. And like that could have happened. I think on other days of season, such as the full on comeback.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
the luck was against us and it didn't happen. I think we we we had the luck on our side this time. um The likes of Collins and Pinnock, solid all season defensively, were very happy to deal with lots of balls into the box and you do wonder whether Everton could have changed their style to try and attack us in a different way using their man advantage but overall it's a positive weekend for Brentford not only was it the first win in the first away point all season I think it adds to the achievement it being with 10 men I thought the away end were very appreciative of that
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And ultimately these things feel like a win when when when you play that long with 10 men against anybody in the Premier League. So I think we've given ourselves now a foundation away from home to build on and there was a chance to press on at home against Leicester next week and continue our brilliant home form and then also to try and get some more points on the road after that.
00:23:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that will do that will do for today. I think I'm definitely not negative about that result at all. And I think we're still in a good position in the league as well. And you can't deny that the mentality was there um at the weekend and that we defend it strongly and that we will give value for a point in the end. send that And I think that's all you can ask for um from the side in the circumstances. But that will do for today. Thank you for listening to the daily event for podcast.

We hope you've enjoyed today's episode and once again we would be extremely grateful for your support as this will enable us to go bigger and better moving forwards.
