Brentford vs Bournemouth Match Recap

00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then Brentford bounced back at the weekend following the agonising defeat against Fulham to beat an impressive Bournemouth side to extend our brilliant home record to start the season.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's get into the team news. The most notable thing we saw was Keen Lewis Potter being deployed at left back, and Matthias Jenson giving us that extra body in midfield. I think many people thought before the game that, you know, it would be the one at left back, and Jenson would almost drop in next in all guard like we talked about a little bit in the preview last week, and that would allow KLP to remain in the front three.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ultimately what Thomas Frank decided to do was shift Vandenberg over to right back. I think he is slightly more comfortable over that side, although it's still not his natural position. And KLP, who we've seen play at left wing back before, Thomas Frank does trust him somewhat defensively, was asked on this occasion and given even more responsibility at left back to essentially be one-on-one with Antoine Semenyo who is arguably Bournemouth's most ah threatening player and and best performer so far this season. So that was a big draw, that was a big vote of confidence from Thomas Rankin, KLP, and I thought Keen Lewis Potter definitely deserves a shout out because I think
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Being in an unnatural position as an attacker at fallback is not easy at all and I think he dealt with the occasion, he dealt with Semenya very, very well and obviously Semenya came out of the game without any goals or anything so brilliant from King Louis Potter.

Defensive Concerns and Adjustments

00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do however worry and am concerned that if this continues, if King Louis Potter continues to have to play there and even Vandenberg continues to have to play it right back There will be occasions where we bemoan the loss of full backs, where we continue to miss full backs, where it looks more and more like it was a mistake in the summer not to bring full back cover in. I don't think it's something we can be relying on regularly. ah Maybe it is contributing to our perhaps less than convincing defensive performances. Obviously, there's we've been waiting for a long time now for Rika Henry to come back. there's
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
be rumours that he's training, that he may feature for the B team soon, but I think we we we should have had the foresight to consider, obviously, Rico Henry has come back from a really long injury, it's not his first long injury, and can we really expect him to hit the ground running?
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Regardless of that, on this occasion, KLP did a very good job at the weekend, and him coming into the team also allowed Jenson to come into the team. We then saw Damnsgaard kind of playing on the left, but when we had the ball, you also see you also saw KLP bombing forward, and Vandenberg more sitting and in about three, essentially, with Collins and Pinnock, when Keen Lewis Potter did bomb forward.
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought it largely worked. I thought we still sort saw the best one. Dam's guard, I didn't think it took anything away from his game and he continues to be very, very good this season. And it was nice to have Jenssen back. and i do agree that having yet to in there, if we are looking to keep the ball, if we are looking to control things, he is someone who is reliable on the ball. He's a very good footballer first and foremost. And I think having him in there does maybe allow you to have that slightly yeah slight element of control, which was definitely lacking in the Fulham game and has at times been lacking in our performances throughout the season as we're trying to implement this style.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
The players come out of the side, then was Mads Roslev, the subject of much criticism following the Fulham game. Thomas Frank did defend him in his pre-match press conference, but I think it is ultimately telling that Mads Roslev was dropped for this game, did not come off the bench, and is ultimately dropped for a centre back, playing it right back.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we have favoured playing a left winger at left back to accommodate Roslev in the squad because if Roslev played I'm sure Vandenberg would have would have covered the left back area. It is quite damning then in some ways for Mads Roslev. I do maintain that sometimes on his day so he can be quite solid defensively
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't want to talk about him too much today because we've said it before on the ball. I don't think he's good enough. I don't think he's consistent enough. I think he, his first instinct is to go backwards rather than than progress the ball up the pitch. And I feel that he is in somewhat of a difficult position in that he is being forced to play more often than he perhaps should. And he is probably playing a bit above his level at the moment, which again, it's no shame. He is clearly a better footballer than you or I, but I think he may not quite be at the level. And I think Thomas Frant may agree with that. And then when we do get full back depth in, I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved on at all. There's still no place in the starts in 11 for Fabio Carvalho. Again, we've spoken about previously on this podcast, it's difficult to find where he fits into the side.

Carvalho's Role and Team Dynamics

00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I echo that sentiment to an extent. I think really he is that second choice to Dammsguard, perhaps in that number 10.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Dam's guard for me is undropple at the moment. So I can understand how Carlisle might be frustrated with minutes, but ultimately he needs to make an impact. He needs to make more of an impact when he comes off the bench in order to force his way into the side or be there when Dam's guards form like D'Appor if Dam's guard suffers an injury.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Bournemouth, the general consensus that I have seen is a lot of frustration from Bournemouth fans that changed in a winning team. Obviously they came into this game off the back of seven points from Arsenal, City and Aston Villa and obviously the wins in that three game run came against Aston Villa and Arsenal of course both at home but you can't deny that's impressive and Kepper in goal did not play in any of those games. He had been injured. Mark Travers was doing really well in goal in his absence and obviously Kepper came back in for this one. I still thought that Bomer did pose threats or the likes of Vanilsson and obviously we've spoken to about him already on this podcast and Menjo all on form coming into this game and I think we saw throughout the game
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice passages of play from Bournemouth and a nice period of passing against Sal, perhaps sometimes vulnerable defence. So that was a team who's coming into the game after the break. I will be talking about the first half.

First Half Struggles and Improvements

00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford Podcast, which is reviewing our victory over Bournemouth at the weekend. Let's get into the first half then. I thought that for the first 15, 20 minutes, it was almost of a continuation of the full-in game. I thought it was quite poor with similar issues, mainly in playing out of defence.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I said this time and timer again, if we are going to play like this, we've got to be consistent with it and we've got to adapt when it's not working. Again, I thought we were at best a bit slow on the ball and at worst we were wasteful in allowing Bournemouth to turn the ball over high up the pitch. We knew coming into this game that Bournemouth would be a good pressing team and they were in parts. Again, I think
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
there were times when we were just a bit hesitant and we allowed them to come on to us and we didn't perhaps ease the pressure from us in the way we perhaps should have and it did take about 20 minutes to acclimatize to the game and obviously within that time we saw a very poor goal that we conceded I don't think you can argue that it does happen sometimes obviously we saw Vandenberg tried to pass it back I think to Flecken but he got the parcel wrong it came straight to Evan Nilsson who rounded Flecken and scored nothing really Flecken could have done about that it happens I suppose it was shades of Nathan Collins versus Wolves our season and to be fair to Vandenberg he adapted better he um reacted better to that mistake than Collins did on that day last season and he didn't go on to have a complete nightmare he
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
regain composure and as a team we improved and we did see in contrast to the Fulham game that dynamism in attack return and especially after the opening 20 minutes we look like we could score every time we go forward and that is what has been getting us out of jail particularly at the G-Tech in recent weeks with the high score lines that we've had we were rewarded from a Jenson long throw on this occasion it's great to see him return again I think even something as simple as that something is a long throw which Jenson gives you it's something we missed I don't think Pinnock's well it's quite as long and Pinnock is someone you want in the box and not taking the long throws it is
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was won, I think, three times by Brentford before it fell for Wisser, who very calmly, as he does when he's presented with a chance, more often than not finished finishes it off.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth did clever a handball in the build-up, but I think the right decision was made. It was not clear in obvious what part of um the body it hit or indeed whose body it hit because from the replays it seemed that it may well have come off a Bournemouth defender. That is seven goals in seven starts in the Premier League for Wissenau and I think that is criminally underrated. The fact that only Brian Chris Woods and Erling Harland has scored more goals than him despite him being injured for three or four games this season is absolutely brilliant and I think what we're seeing this season is Johan Wisser in his best position and what he can really do with regular starts playing down the middle and if he carries on anywhere near the rate that he's scoring at at the moment
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
then when Ivan Tony got 20 goals a couple of years ago, we could see that emulated and more from Wisser and I'm very, very excited to see what more he could give us going forwards, I think. When you have the likes of him and Brighton, and I don't think Brighton and BMO was on it again, unfortunately, on Saturday, but when you've got the two of them and just one of them turns up, you know that we are going to be a dangerous side to play against.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know that despite maybe some weaknesses in our team defensively, there's always a goal or two in Whisson and Bumo in particular. And as a club the size of Brentford, where we are in the table, to look at that Premier League top scorers list and see both Brian and Whisson in the top three or four is brilliant for the club and it is a testament to everyone at the club, how well we've moved on from Ivan Todian, how we can still attack and how we are, as Thomas Wright likes to say, an asset to the Premier League. I thought, after the goal in the last five to ten minutes of the first half, Bournemouth appeared to get on top again. I thought they were overall the best team in the first half, but Brentford did hold out until the break, which was needed at that point, I think.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I perhaps would have taken a draw at that point. I could tell that Bournemouth were the best team we've probably played at the G-Tech this season, which I think is reasonable, given that we played the bottom four and West Ham, who are struggling in their own right. And I think you could tell, and I think the results ultimately in the end shows how impressive the victory was.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the break and in part three we will be going through the second half where Brentford are forced to come back once more.

Second Half Developments and Key Moments

00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part three of the Daily Brentford Podcast reviewing our victory over Bournemouth for the weekend. Let's get into the second half then. Again, I thought we saw somewhat of a slow start to the second half, not for the first time this season. It's becoming a bit of a habit where Brentford, perhaps for chunks of the game, do not hit the levels that are required and usually In that stage of a game, it often results in conceding. I think I particularly remember the Manchester United game at Old Trafford, where we just did not get going in that second half and we ultimately conceded two goals from sustained pressure in the opening 20 minutes of the half.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth goal on this occasion. It was a good move from the corner. It looked very well rehearsed, very well drilled. I don't know if Bournemouth had seen something in how we lined up at a corner before the game to see how they can um unlock us.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think from our perspective, it is a bit disappointed to concede from a set piece. I didn't think we got tight enough to any of the ball of players who are allowed time on the ball. And I don't really think you should be conceding in those situations. I think the club will definitely be disappointed with that. However,
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
As much as I said about Brentford perhaps not reacting well to certain to certain things in the past, on this occasion we reacted extremely well of a quick fire second. It was another Brentford special kickoff which sometimes goes unnoticed.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
when it is not directly the beginning of a game or or directly the beginning of the second half. We scored within one and a half minutes on kickoff. Dam's guard squeezing in at the near post following a pass from Brian and Bummo. First and foremost, I am extremely pleased to make our Dam's guard. The only thing missing from his game was a Premier League goal.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
after he scored in the Carabao Cup early this season. I thought he's been brilliant so far this season. Easily one of our best players was perhaps not quite at his usual levels on Monday night against Fulham.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you could say that for the majority of the squad but definitely here he was back to his best involved in nearly everything good that we do and I am so pleased to him that he has got that goal I do remember when he scored last year I can't remember who it was against now but he scored a very good goal last year and it was disallowed for pushing and shoving going on in the box whether that was rightly or wrongly it wasn't Damsgaard doing that pushing or shoving and he deserved that goal that day. I'm so pleased it's come for him now and he can only be growing in confidence week could week in week out and it's it's a joy to see to be honest. Having said that I think Kepper in goal probably should have done better.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
with this you don't want to get beaten at your near post like that and it's the type of goal that if Fleckin had conceded I could see fans getting on his back for it so I do think Bournemouth will be a bit bit disappointed and Kepa will be a bit disappointed that he couldn't keep that out especially at such a key time in the game where Momentum had just shifted to Bournemouth they had just retaken the lead and instantly Brentford put a pin in that and managed to forced the momentum back so soon after which must be deflating from a Bournemouth point of view and so proof following this our best game with the pit our best period of the game began and it was a fan fantastic move for our third goal I want to talk about Vitalia now it was brilliant in the first instance in dummy the pass on Pinnock
00:19:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then receive it back from King Louis Potter. Brilliant movement. And then he played a perfect ball into Wiss's path. And now I'm someone that has called for him, perhaps not to start every week, Vitalian El, but in recent games, he has been brilliant. I think he produced the one bit of quality that we had against Fulham. He was probably one of the very few players on Monday night that came out of any credit.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
obviously we saw a brilliant government on that occasion. I remember a couple of assists that he's had in recent weeks in addition to this one at the weekend, just that calm and composed pass I think to Christian Norga, I think it was against Wolves.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah which resulted in an assist and I think we are seeing bits of quality from him that I didn't necessarily think he had quality on the ball quality in his movement and it's there and what a bargain he has been at 500k when he was signed in the championship he was signed at a time when Christian and Norga got injured so he was probably thrown into the team sooner than we thought that we would have to do that. I don't know if we even envisioned that he'd be ready for such first team football at that stage but he has been thrown in ever since he signed and has been ever reliable for us ever since and
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
what i really want to say about him as well is his availability is his best of it a better best ability in some ways he is always there always reliable and i think he really deserves a shout out when at times we struggle with squad death he's always been there to step in and left back at times and the quality is showing at the moment is up there with some of his best games in Brentfordshire so I just wanted to highlight that especially when like Brian and Boomer when I spoke about Whissa I think maybe Christian Norgard hasn't fully been on it the last couple of games either but it's great to see the likes of Janelle and obviously the likes of Whissa stepping in when that happens and if there is an argument in the next game or the game after to only start one of Janelle or Norgard
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would go with, you know, based on recent form at the moment. And that's not something I said before. So that's how well he's doing at the moment. I just want to see him keep that up after the international break. Obviously he doesn't play for the German national teams. They he can have a couple of weeks to rest and recover. Not that he needs it because, you know, as one of those again, like it's always there, always available, always seemingly fit. Following the goal with the great finish by Whistler again, by the way,
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
is It makes such a difference, you see lots of strikers miss those sorts of opportunities, fail to have the composure dinger over the keeper, it's something that he had to think about as he was running onto the ball, he only had time where he'd take one touch, and you trust with the time and time again to put those away more often than not. and That is so valuable for a team, mid-table in the Premier League, because not every team has someone as reliable as whatsoever up front, which is brilliant, again, and I can't praise him enough.

Brentford's Strong League Performance

00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And although Brentford's Premier League recruitment may have been criticised at times in the last few years, you've got to be looking at Western now as our finest recruit since the Premier League era, surely.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and you know the way it's going at the moment. I hope Whistler can perhaps retain that number nine spot for the next two or three years and Igor Tiago has got a fart on his hands when he comes into the squad.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the goal as I was saying we saw the game out relatively well I thought by our standards aside from a couple of scares in the last two minutes of injury time where we lost a bit of our composure maybe that isn't surprising given the experience we had against Fulham we needed luck sometimes to fall on our side and when the ball hit the bar and we eventually scrambled it away towards the end with a minute or so to go it was definitely a big release to everyone in the stadium and it was a good way to bounce back ultimately from the Fulham game there's still areas that Brentford need to work on but
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you can say quite clearly this is the best team we have beaten this season, Bournemouth are a good side and by no stretch will they be easy for a lot of teams to beat. When they were last away trip they got a point at their park. It was a brilliant win, it shows that we can beat maybe some of the slightly better teams as well and that the G-Tech can hopefully remain a fortress.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Most notably from these weekend fixtures and looking at the league table on Monday morning there are only three points between Chelsea in third, Chelsea and Arsenal in third and Brentford in 11th.
00:24:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
going into the international break and I do not remember the Premier League being this close for such a long time so everything to play for in the next few weeks and at the moment we can look up rather than down which is always a really positive thing as a Brentford fan especially after last year's experience where perhaps we were looking a bit down at certain points in the season.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that will do for today. Thank you for listening to Daily Brentford Podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's episode and once again, we would be extremely grateful for your support as this will enable us to get bigger and better moving forwards. Daily Brentford can be found on X, Instagram and TikTok under the handle at GSPN Brentford.
