Brentford's Home Performance and Lineup

Global Sports Podcast Network
So then, Brentford's brilliant home record continues in terms of team news. The big news, I guess, was Kevin Shada in for Vitalia Nelt, which allowed for an extra attacker on the pitch, essentially. We had previously gone with Damsgaard, Jenson, you know, and Norgod all on the same team, which in the build up phase,
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of resulted in an extra body being in the middle with Dam's guard drifting centrally and keen Lewis Potter looking to offer the whip from the left. Here Thomas Frank felt confident enough and able enough to go with that extra attacker assuming he thought that we could still have control against the lesser side even with one less in the middle. That was most definitely the case I think. What I must say though is Thomas Frank must be a few weeks behind on the podcast, because I know previously there were some suggestions on here that, you know, it should come out the team and that maybe him and Norga don't need to both be playing every week. But ah ah how he's recently been, Vitale, you know, I think it was a little bit harsh to take him out of the team. I think he's shown his quality in recent weeks. But having said that, I am so pleased to Kevin Shada. We will come on to it. So I won't talk about it too much now, but
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am so pleased for him and I really hope that he can kick on after this one.

Kevin Shada's Hat-trick Achievement

00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you know he's he's a foot He's a second Brentford player in the Premier League era to get a hat-trick for the club. After Ivan Tony, he did it on two occasions. He's the first Brentford player in the Premier League to get four goal involvements in one game. So it was a truly sensational performance. and It's like like Thomas Frank says, he's got in the positions all season, he's missed chances all season, but there is a daylight today. If you keep getting in the right positions, days like today come round, and I really just hope he can use the confidence from this to really start flourishing, um like like we've seen from some some other players this season, especially.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in terms of other team news, Jenson did start the game, but did come off injured, which means, you know, did actually play quite a large portion of the game. I thought it's a real shame. And I really hope we don't lose Jenson again. I think he compliments Damsgaard well. They are very, very different players whereas as well as previously. It might have been seen previously last season when Jenson was in the team and Damsgaard was struggling to get in and they kind of play the same role.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
but they compliment each other so well when they play together. Jenson from that deeper position with the long diagonal passes. Dam's guard is more better in the half spaces. He's everything good that we do seems to come through Dam's guard a lot of the time. And he's right up there up to third now in the assist charts in the Premier League. um But yeah, with with the river of the guard to Jenson,
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's hope that the injury he sustained at the weekend is not too serious. Otherwise, Brentford were unchanged. I didn't think, I didn't suspect that we would make two changes too many changes for this one. We did see a cameo again from Fabio Carvalho and Igor Tiago. I thought they both looked very good, especially Carvalho. I thought he was extremely good in the tight spaces. Quite similarly to Damsguard, I thought he, um His little passing moves were very good. He had an effort in the second half. And and you could see how he could impact the game and be difficult for opposition players to pick up and mark if he is given more time on the field. Having said all that, with with the likes of Shada coming into form, Calvario looking good when he does play, Tiago is a total different option to someone like Wisser.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then you've got Brian and Bummo, you've got Yoann Whistle on top of that who are so consistent and are so reliable for us.

Brentford's Tactical Flexibility

00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then eventually when you might have KLP back into the frame in an attacking sense, if and when Rico Henry returns, I think it is just so exciting to see Brantford with so many options in particularly going forward. It means that even if the game isn't going our way, you can be confident that there is a change we can make on the bench.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And something we can try and do to bring the game in our favour, and I think that's invaluable. And yeah, I very much look forward to seeing more from these players and more from them on the pitch altogether. Another thing I want to quickly touch on again is um Keen Lewis Potter and Seth Vandenberg. I feel like Seth Vandenberg is someone who could easily go under the radar.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
King Louis Potter is has been a revelation in recent games. In fact, in that left back position, he has his ability to come forward whilst also being there and in position to track back is brilliant. But I don't think he can do that role without Vandenberg at right back. I think if he's going to be so offensive down the left,
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
When we've got the ball, I think you need someone like Vandenberg on the opposite flank who's much more conservative, who will make it a back three when KLP is gone. And I think the balance in the team at the moment is very, very good as a result. And I still think there could be a game down the line where perhaps KLP is exposed defensively. I think there's been games. I think Manchester United away stands out when Vandenberg struggled a bit.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
defensively being out ah right back when it's when it's not his natural position but I think generally them to have done very very well in recent weeks and it's a stark contrast to last season when we had the similar issue up until January when Regulon came in of not having fullbacks available and the solution we have come to this season as opposed to last season it was a lot of um You know, a left back roster played more games. I think we noticed the problem much, much more last season. And it's credit to Thomas Frank that he's spent time on the summer working on things. Obviously KLP wasn't even his first solution in that position. It was Christopher Iyer, but ultimately it's worked.
00:07:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we have found a solution and that solution is better than, you know, a left back or, um, getting well, seven, the team who I think we all do agree that he probably isn't quite premier league standard, which is very unfortunate. In terms of Lester, as we spoke about in the buildup, it was very difficult to predict how they were set up. They changed their shape to back five with first start. So Connor Cody and Luke Thomas.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
That did not seem to work for me. I thought they looked very passive. I thought they definitely looked at the worst

Leicester's Setup Critique and Manager Transition

00:07:53

team. Bradley played this season. Jamie Vardy at a 37 still look like their most dangerous player. Buena notte who we also picked out in the preview.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
was also one of the most dangerous players, and obviously those two combined for Les's goal, but I thought generally they were quite poor, and I think we can all agree now that it was it's a very good time to play Leicester, and surely under Rude van Astoroy, who was in attendance at G-Tech, they will improve and they will find a better way of playing. um Ultimately, they weren't in the relegation zone, so so they picked up results this season, and Brentford really, really showed their class in this game.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So after the break then, I will be going through the game itself, um starting goal by goal in what was a busy first half.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel. So let's get straight into the

Brentford vs Leicester Match Analysis

00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
first half. I thought Brentford started the game brightly. I thought we were on top. I thought that was a general theme of the game throughout. It took a brilliant save from Mads Hermanson, who's someone I didn't pick out in the preview, but I probably should have. I think he's been very, very good in goal for Leicester and obviously him being Danish. I'm surprised that perhaps Brentford haven't taken a look at him in the past.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He denied Kevin Schader. Schader's header in the first half. I thought Kevin Schader did everything right. He sent the ball back the other way. He got it high towards the corner of the goal. And it was a very, very good save. And you can see that going in on other occasions. Then we conceded against the run of play. And this has happened at times this season. We've perhaps conceded goals that we shouldn't have.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
This, just on the eye, looked very sloppy from Ethan Pinnock. He was caught off balance. He wasn't authoritative with Jamie Vardy, who, you know, has vast amount of experience. He knows exactly what he's doing. It looked very, very messy. I thought Flecken was kind of caught in no man's lad between Vardy and Brononotti. He wasn't... didn't get anywhere near the ball, really, and it it led to a Brononotti tap-in. And he didn't even have Flecken to beat in the end.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was very frustrating at that point. I thought the atmosphere at GTEP was quite flat. I don't think it helped that Leicester weren't great and we were kind of dominating. And that goal was a bit like a sucker punch out of nowhere. I think perhaps there is an extent that you know the fans do get up for some some of the bigger games more, but you know ah should it shouldn't be like that in my opinion. I think every game in its in its own way needs to be won.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Uh, as we'll go on to, obviously we did go on to win this and went on to win it quite well. Um, the reaction on the pitch was quite good. Um, from that, um, from conceding the goal, it was a brilliant ball. Again, I said, everything goes through Michael Dam's guard. And this one really did as well. It was a brilliant ball to feed Shada running in behind on the left in his favorite position, by the way. And obviously that's something that we pointed out in the last few weeks as well.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shana needs to be playing in his favorite position. He needs to be playing on the left. There's less pressure on him. Um, to be that goal scorer down the middle, if he's on the left and you know, we just saw the end product that he produced. I mean, first of all, with the cross, it was a pinpoint, perfect cross for Whistler to tap home. Whistler's positioning is brilliant as always. He's always there to, to feed on the chances, but that cross from Shana needed to be perfect to go between the defender and Hermanson who ended up colliding with each other.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was pleased for for Shada at this stage, um not knowing what was to come with the second goal. It was a bit of a scuff shot from Kevin Shada and an element of fortune with Brian and Bumo's ball fighting him, having taken a deflection on its way across goal. But we saw Shada on off the market and I think the scuff probably helped take it in, I think it.
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
made it a bit harder to save. I think it got it in the corner and it and it added a bit of flight to the ball. And yeah, very, very pleased with him. it It was still a good finish. And, you know, you've got to be in the positions. And and like we said, if he keeps being in the position, she will score goals and that and that's what we saw here. I thought the third goal just before a long period of added time at the end of the first half was the one that arguably killed the game. And again,
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael Dam's guard. I can't praise him enough if I had to choose Brentford's best player this season. I think I would choose him. I think he's been almost faultless all season. Another assist for the third, although he he probably deserved an assist for Whistle's goal too with the first ball into Shada. But this what this time had the ball on the and edge of the box, a perfectly weighted pass into Kevin Shada. I thought Shada's first touch actually narrowed the angle, took the ball slightly away from goal.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he made up for it of a dink finish into the far corner, something Thomas Frank said he'd been working on in training. And from there, you can see the confidence starting to flow. And it's so great after, perhaps at times, Brentford's Premier League recruitment has been questioned with the likes of Shana, Dam's guard, Nathan Collins, perhaps not all hitting the ground running. Mark Flecken, you could probably add to that conversation, but all of them this year, especially Dam's guard, especially Collins, Flecken as well,
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
have been brilliant. Kean Lewis-Potter's another one. He's a revelation at the moment I left back and it's so great to see all these players performing so, so well for Brentford in the Premier League when maybe their signings have been questioned at different times and I think Shada now will get onto his third goal after half time but Shada now needs to use this to really push on and and develop an air of consistency because I'm sure he will now get more chances given that performance because how can you drop him off to that performance. Having said that, it was it was a well deserved leave for Brentford at halftime. I thought Leicester were very, very poor. So how much can we read on into into how much we dominated that? I don't know.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought they didn't press us very much and I think anyone that's watched Brentford in the last few weeks knows that we can struggle against a bit of a press um especially when trying to p play out from the back. I thought for a team also playing five out the back they were not solid at all defensively and it was a relatively comfortable afternoon as you would get in the Premier League for Brentford. I don't remember too many other more comfortable Premier League games which is a disappointing indictment on Leicester, although they they as we have as we've touched on, they they were in a period of transition. And I would have thought it will get better from here with the new manager coming in. After the break, then, that we'll go over the second half, what little happened in the second half, and we will talk about the impact this result will have on the squad.

Kevin Shada's Growing Confidence

00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, welcome to the third and final part of your Daily Brentford podcast, reviewing our victory against Leicester at the weekend. So this game followed a very similar pattern in the second half and the fourth goal follow through brilliant link up between Collins and Wisser before Collins chaddered his inner Mikaar Dam's guard to release Shada. And there's so many elements I want to talk about this goal.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Nathan Collins, we've we've seen it done it before. I think he did it um actually again in this game where he found himself high up the pitch on the right-hand side chasing after a ball. I think he laid it off to Brian Abumo on that occasion. But we see it so often. If he finds himself coming forward to win the ball or win a duel, he won't just stop there. He'll be positive. He'll look to come forward. He'll look to um get involved in the play.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think what Collins is showing is that he is just such a good footballer. And that is why he's perhaps adapted better to playing out more from the back than Ethan Pinnock. I mean, we we saw in the international break, Nathan Collins for Ireland played in midfield and I'm not sure if he needs to do that for Brentford because I think he's brilliant where he is to Brentford and we don't need him in that area of the pitch, but it shows that he can play.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that pass, that assists for Dam's guard. First of all, the one-two of Whissa is, um it just shows how he is positive and how he keeps wanting to come forward with the ball. And then that pass, what an assist. that That is something that wouldn't look out of place by Dam's guard and and what the sort of thing Dam's guard's been doing all season. And then we get to the finish.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kevin Schader, how many times this season have we seen him through one on one and we we haven't been confident that he put those away. He'd often put it straight at the keeper. He'd often put it wide. This time, I do not think he scores that one if it wasn't for the confidence gain from the first two. And it was a brilliant first time finish into the corner. He made that decision quick. He was decisive. He was composed.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is what we need to see more from him. And I'm so, so happy for him. I think he will be most pleased with that goal because it was clean, it was composed, and it was something that he struggled with before. And you could see how happy he was. you know He's not one to normally get involved in all the celebrations. He doesn't seem to celebrate his goals too much. He seems like one of the quieter members of the dressing room.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he's valued by the other players. You can see that in the way they celebrate with him and the reception he received at the end, um, was very much worthy. And I think he knows now we all know, and we knew anyway, um, cause he scored one or two great goals last season as well, that the potential is there with him. And now it's about consistent performances, hopefully staying on his favorite side. Given that we have Whistler and Tiago, you know, who can work out the middle. So,
00:19:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is so, so exciting to see and you know he's he's made he's given Thomas Frank a decision and it's very difficult to take him out of the team and the game's he got coming up now. In the last 30 minutes or so after this after the goal, I thought it resembled a training session in many ways. I thought, as I've said, let's do a very poor, I think this did affect the atmosphere in the stadium a little.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It didn't look like there was much jeopardy. Lesser didn't really look like they were doing a lot. They even took off Jamie Vardy. They took off Bonnotte. I think they were kind of accepting with the midweek game to come that they had this one had got away from them. um That's when we saw the cameos from Carvalho and the likes Tiago as well, which which I spoke about at the beginning of the episode. So having said all that,
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And after another good win at the G-Tech, just how good are Brentford?

Brentford's Home vs Away Performance

00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we have the best home record in Europe. However, we've only got one point away from home all season. And every single point we have earned in the Premier League this season have come against the current bottom eight. That suggests to me that we maybe are better than the very worst teams in the league, which is great. It's a good place for Brentford to be around mid table.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
but perhaps there is still a little bit of a gap to go against some real top sides in the league. And perhaps as we develop our style of play, um that will come and we'll and we'll start to get results. But if we can, then we've given ourselves a real good foundation of our results against the lower side. So obviously I'm i'm aware with the home and away form, there's a bit of disparity in the teams we've played home and away as well. And I think this week, you know we've got the ninth and 10th um bottom teams this week after gaining points against all of the bottom eight in Villa and Newcastle. Both of them are very good teams on the day. Both of them probably not the ninth and 10th worst team in in the Premier League, but both of them struggling a bit at the moment. so
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
There are tougher tests to come and and I'm really excited to see how Brentford do fair this week as we look to, we're looking up at the moment ultimately and that's always a positive thing. We're not we're not looking over our shoulder like we were for much last season and we can be positive and see where the season takes us. And I think December is going to be a crucial month in seeing where we're at at the beginning of January and what um what our aspirations can be for the rest of the season, both in the league and and obviously in the Carabao Cup as well.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That will do it for today anyway. So thank you for listening to Daily Brentford Podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's episode. And once again, we'll be extremely grateful for your support. This will enable us to go bigger and better moving forwards.
