00:00:01
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Hello, hello, listeners, and welcome back to a special Halloween edition of Book Watch. I'm Sarah Daye and today i am joined by Jodyn Carrido Hi, Jordan.
00:00:13
Jordyn Carrido
Hello, everybody.
00:00:15
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And also Chris Hitlett. Hello, and welcome back again, Chris, this month.
00:00:20
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um And Jordan, you too. We covered Dracula as well. Hello. hit We are taking a break from our usual book to screen comparisons to celebrate all things spooky season.
00:00:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I'm thrilled that my podcast release date is on actual Halloween. So I thought, what better than the bonus episode to be a Halloween episode?
00:00:45
Sarah-Daye McDougall
So we are going to just kind of talk about our Halloween traditions, um, I don't know if you guys love Halloween as much as I do or not, but we'll kind of start the conversation
Sarah and Jordan's Halloween Traditions
00:00:57
Sarah-Daye McDougall
there. And then I have some rapid fire questions that might spark conversation or just have some fun with it.
00:01:03
Sarah-Daye McDougall
So um let's just start with, do you guys like Halloween as much as I do?
00:01:10
Chris
I don't i't know if it's like quite as much as you do. I i definitely enjoy ah some of the ah the fall ah aspects of it. i'm not I don't know if it's ah my favorite holiday, but it's definitely one I enjoy seeing all the ah creativity that goes into it.
00:01:28
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, I think I probably liked it more as a kid when it was more about dressing up and getting candy. And now, like as an adult, it's just a normal day.
00:01:37
Jordyn Carrido
just got to go to work and then you come home and it's not it's hard to make it as fun as an adult.
00:01:43
Jordyn Carrido
But um yeah, I like the season. Just you get the excuse to watch the fun, like nostalgic holiday movies, Halloween movies.
00:01:49
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Exactly.
00:01:51
Jordyn Carrido
So that that's always fun.
00:01:53
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay, I will send you a list of ways to bring that magic back for you guys.
00:01:57
Jordyn Carrido
Okay, perfect.
00:01:59
Chris
Have kids and dress them up.
00:02:00
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um So then, ah do you – yes, that has been part of it.
00:02:02
Jordyn Carrido
There you go
00:02:06
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um It's been a lot of fun to kind of play in the Halloween costumes for my children, um and we are all dressing up as K-pop Demon Hunter characters this year, so that's going to be a lot of fun.
00:02:18
Chris
That's like the number one top costume this year, so.
00:02:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um I know we're going to be everywhere, but it's, it's been fun to see.
00:02:23
Jordyn Carrido
You'll just be doing the Spider-Man meme all night. Like, oh my gosh, you and you and us too.
00:02:27
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yep.
00:02:29
Chris
Well, as long as everybody knows the dance, it works out perfect.
00:02:29
Jordyn Carrido
That'll be fun.
00:02:29
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah
00:02:31
Chris
because Then you got a bigger crowd to join in.
00:02:33
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah, no, I don't know the dance and I have not practiced, but it's going to be fun.
00:02:37
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um And Zuhair is training us to go trick-or-treating.
00:02:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
So that's going to be a lot of fun.
00:02:41
Chris
That'll be awesome.
00:02:42
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes.
00:02:43
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um So ah my youngest is actually going to be Derpy, the blue tiger. and she like, that's what she wanted to be.
00:02:50
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And she is in a cat phase right now. um So I'm not surprised.
00:02:54
Jordyn Carrido
I think we all had a cat phase. I was reading the warrior cat books nonstop in like fifth and sixth grade.
00:02:59
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I haven't heard of that.
00:03:00
Chris
No? Oh man, those are so popular.
00:03:01
Jordyn Carrido
Oh, they're iconic.
00:03:02
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Okay. I'll have to find those and have them for her.
00:03:05
Chris
My brother read them, I did not. um But I i or heard all about them from him.
00:03:07
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay.
00:03:11
Jordyn Carrido
I still cherish those books. And so if your kid's having a cat phase, she needs to read those and they will change her life.
00:03:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I love that. Okay. I'll definitely write that down. um So what kind of um traditions have you carried over or did you love while you were growing up other than of course dressing up and going to retreating?
00:03:33
Jordyn Carrido
Even now, like we still are do pumpkin carving. So i whenever everybody's work schedules line up, and we're gonna go to my parents' house and gonna do pumpkin carving with my myself and my two sisters. And then each of us have partners. So all six of the kids and sons-in-laws are gonna be there and do pumpkin carving.
00:03:53
Jordyn Carrido
And my sisters are like, we're dressing up this year. Like we're bringing back the hype from when we were kids.
00:03:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Good, I appreciate that.
00:03:59
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah. So, so that's pretty much but every year we just do family pumpkin carving together. And that's like my mom's way trying to hold on to the magic, even as we continue to get older.
00:04:09
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Good.
00:04:11
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I love that.
Childhood Costumes and Memories
00:04:14
Chris
We did more of that when before my parents moved away this last year, but ah growing up, we would just go to the church and do it. They had a big ah ah its harvest festival where they had a bunch of games and a box maze that was always fun, but that's more for the when you're a kid. And so it became less and less of a tradition for me to do anything really on Halloween as I got older. But yeah.
00:04:36
Chris
I do enjoy pumpkin carving. That's always fun. And my wife being a preschool teacher, she's always doing stuff at school and has to dress up for the kids. So she kind of keeps me in the spirit a little bit.
00:04:43
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes. Yay. Love that for us.
00:04:48
Chris
Comic-Con has definitely gotten me more into the dressing back up again and doing stuff.
00:04:51
Jordyn Carrido
There you go.
00:04:51
Chris
And so like last year or the year before, I was, I'm always like the only person that dresses up my work and wears a costume to work, but I still embrace it.
00:04:59
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I actually have this year off, like the week of Halloween off.
00:05:03
Sarah-Daye McDougall
We're doing like some home renovation stuff.
00:05:05
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And I was really bummed because I would totally be wearing like my Halloween headbands and witch hats. And I would be dressing up um every day the week of Halloween. But they won't get to see it.
00:05:15
Chris
Oh, that's fun. I was working at a lumberyard, but I wore my Fat Thor costume one year like with the whole like ah um the robe and had the big beard and hair.
00:05:26
Chris
and And I brought the hammer, but then I put my work vest over it. So I had the um the the orange vest over that.
00:05:34
Chris
was pretty funny. Got some good photos of that.
00:05:38
Jordyn Carrido
That's awesome.
00:05:39
Sarah-Daye McDougall
okay so what has been your favorite halloween costume to date of like are of your own
00:05:47
Jordyn Carrido
The only one I can remember, well, obviously in a house with only girl children, we all like cycled through all the Disney princesses. So like there's pictures of me as Ariel and my little sister as Jasmine and Tinkerbell and Belle and all of that.
00:06:03
Jordyn Carrido
But the one I remember the most I think is... which kind of speaks to my obsession with fantasy and like medieval type novels. Now is like, I had this red, like medieval queen dress that it looked like straight out of Sleeping Beauty.
00:06:18
Jordyn Carrido
And I still remember that. And I'm like, dang, I loved that dress. Cause we kept it. So we would use it to like play dress up later. So that was like, okay, if you're, it's it's your turn to be the queen today.
00:06:25
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:06:28
Jordyn Carrido
So you get to wear that, the red dress.
00:06:30
Jordyn Carrido
And so that, that was always fun.
00:06:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
How many sisters do you have? Okay.
00:06:34
Jordyn Carrido
um There's three of us in total, including me. so
00:06:37
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:06:37
Jordyn Carrido
Two younger sisters that
Nostalgic Halloween Movies
00:06:39
Jordyn Carrido
we always were battling. Who gets to be the queen? Who's the princess? Who has to pretend to be you know the prince? so As the oldest, I usually got first dibs and the the other two had to battle it out.
00:06:52
Chris
um I don't remember a lot of my costumes growing up or anything, but we had, I know at one point someone gave us a giant box full of ah of old costumes and stuff. Like we got ah and a bulk thing from someone.
00:07:02
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Fine.
00:07:04
Chris
And so we would just go through that every year and find something to throw together. And so that was a lot of fun. um and think one of the favorite ones i ever saw was the Smartie pants where people had ah Smarties glued to their pants.
00:07:18
Jordyn Carrido
That's cool.
00:07:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah Fine.
00:07:20
Chris
That one made me laugh. a Good little pun. Yeah.
00:07:23
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I have two that ah stick out. One's not so much of a Halloween costume, but it's something I wore to one of the Harry Potter midnight releases and it was the gray lady and I won the hall the costume contest.
00:07:36
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um So I got to have like the first copy of the book that they gave out that night, which is always a good memory.
00:07:40
Jordyn Carrido
Ah, that's so cool.
00:07:42
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And then um much younger, I think I was probably five or six or so. My mom made me a Batman costume she, The cape was like an umbrella.
00:07:52
Sarah-Daye McDougall
So when I pulled my arms up, it would like lift up too.
00:07:55
Chris
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:07:56
Jordyn Carrido
That's so cool.
00:07:57
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah. So she, my mom always did really great costumes growing up. um But yeah, that, those are the two that come to mind. Yeah.
00:08:05
Jordyn Carrido
That's so epic. I would love to see that Batman costume.
00:08:09
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um so what are some movies like do you at least watch the same like you we were talking about the nostalgic movies that we grew up with do you still kind of watch those every year during this season
00:08:22
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, I mean, definitely like the Tim Burton movies Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride are classics for me.
00:08:27
Sarah-Daye McDougall
mm-hmm ah
00:08:29
Jordyn Carrido
um I also will watch.
00:08:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
listeners Chris is wearing a nightmare before Christmas t-shirt as we speak
00:08:32
Jordyn Carrido
See, there you go.
00:08:37
Chris
had to throw that on. Oh, I think I have something i could throw on my, ever thats for this episode.
00:08:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes, perfect.
00:08:43
Jordyn Carrido
And then we always watch Harry Potter, especially like Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets because they have those big like Halloween plot points.
00:08:52
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes.
00:08:53
Jordyn Carrido
um So those are Halloween movies and Christmas
Rapid-Fire Halloween Questions
00:08:56
Jordyn Carrido
movies to me.
00:08:56
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Exactly.
00:08:56
Jordyn Carrido
But, you know, because they cover everything.
00:08:57
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah. I feel like you just watch them like from ah like starting in October and then ending at New Year's. You just watch those movies on repeat.
00:09:04
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, exactly.
00:09:05
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah. And then I've got to throw Twilight in there. It's hoa hoa season.
00:09:10
Jordyn Carrido
um so so we always gotta to mix in a little Twilight with your Harry Potter just to keep things fresh.
00:09:16
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Sure.
00:09:19
Chris
Charlie Brown, ah the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown, um Nightmare Before Christmas, I actually hadn't seen until only like a year or two ago.
00:09:21
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes.
00:09:27
Chris
It was one that I just never got around to watching.
00:09:28
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Wow. Yeah.
00:09:30
Chris
And so I'm definitely a fan now, but it was just not one that we, had in our household and uh the harry potter stuff was even something i didn't do till i was an adult either so that was on a um different level for when i experienced it and everything too but definitely i like the the um charlie brown one that's always a good just classic to watch while carving pumpkins or whatever um and i can't think of any other ones we do specifically for halloween but
00:09:44
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:09:51
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:09:59
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah, so I'm going to also throw in Casper, Hocus Pocus, and Practical Magic are some of the ones that I also like. Harry Potter is definitely up there as well.
00:10:10
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And then, of course, the Tim Burton stuff. But um those three are so are what I'm excited to watch again during October.
00:10:17
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And um I've started introducing those to the girls, too. So hopefully those kind of traditions will carry on from year to year moving forward.
00:10:26
Chris
I'm taking notes from this call so I can you know what I should be watching for this.
00:10:26
Jordyn Carrido
And I remember too, there
00:10:30
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah
00:10:31
Chris
Gotta build some traditions.
00:10:32
Jordyn Carrido
I remember too growing up watching like the Disney channel movies. So they had like Halloween town and twitches. um and both of those had sequels.
00:10:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh, yes.
00:10:41
Jordyn Carrido
So those are good Halloween ones too, to really take you back to the,
00:10:44
Sarah-Daye McDougall
We just tried Halloween Town. That wasn't one that I like particularly loved, um like a lot of our generation does. um But the girls are kind of interested. I think next year will definitely be a year where they're into it. Not so much this year, but they do like Practical Magic. I'm sorry, not Practical Magic. Not yet.
00:11:02
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Hocus Pocus. They like Hocus Pocus, both the original and the sequel.
00:11:05
Sarah-Daye McDougall
They they like those.
00:11:07
Chris
So Halloween Town is actually based on St. Helens, Oregon, which is not too far away from it about three hours away from me. So we were actually this morning and my wife were talking, looking at it like, oh, maybe we should go check this out.
00:11:17
Chris
They do a gigantic like Halloween ah celebration every year.
00:11:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes.
00:11:21
Chris
It's almost like a Ren Faire and the way they ah build up this town and do a haunted house and all this stuff. So I haven't actually seen the movie, but I was like, maybe we should watch it and go check out the town here nearby.
00:11:26
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Wow, that's awesome.
00:11:26
Jordyn Carrido
Oh, that'd be so fun.
00:11:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
1000% you should do that and report back. Yeah.
00:11:34
Chris
Absolutely. i'll I'll check it out.
00:11:36
Chris
Maybe next year, but I'll definitely check it out and we'll have another conversation about it.
00:11:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay, so
Favorite Spooky Characters
00:11:42
Sarah-Daye McDougall
let's start the rapid-fire questions, and we'll see if that sparks any conversations or not. So um we'll go – Jordan will answer first, then Chris, and then I'll follow up with anything. Okay, ready?
00:11:57
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Favorite Halloween candy. Okay.
00:12:00
Jordyn Carrido
Snickers, many Snickers.
00:12:04
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay. I love the –
00:12:08
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Reese's pumpkin pumpkin Reese's they're just so much better than a normal Reese's yes okay next question um who are you siding with witches vampires ghosts or werewolves
00:12:11
Chris
Of all Reese's, the pumpkins are better, yes.
00:12:11
Jordyn Carrido
That's valid.
00:12:22
Jordyn Carrido
Oh, that's so tough. ah Werewolves.
00:12:30
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I think I have to say, oh it's really tough between witches and werewolves, but I'm going to go. my My instinct was to say werewolves, so even though I think if I thought about it, I would choose witches. But my first instinct was werewolves.
00:12:43
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Let's explain. Why did you say witches?
00:12:49
Chris
Oh, sorry. So um the context of what we're choosing, is there's a fight between them? Is this just a, what are we? Yeah,
00:12:56
Jordyn Carrido
Oh, yeah. I thought it was like if you were going to be one. so I was like, yeah, would totally want to be a werewolf.
00:12:59
Chris
yeah so that's what I got to figure out the ah context here. What are we, what are we deciding?
00:13:04
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um I think if you want if you were going to like be a part of the group, would that change your answers?
00:13:11
Chris
Oh, there's witches are, no.
00:13:14
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay. Okay.
00:13:14
Chris
ah Witches are so much, ah there's more to them, I feel like, than a lot of those other ones. You know a lot of the other stuff happens to you and then you're just kind of, um you get these abilities, but a witch is something that you kind of have to um work at and choose to be and you get a lot more control over things and I think it's a, I think it's more interesting path.
00:13:38
Chris
I've got my tarot cards here next to me, so, yeah.
00:13:38
Jordyn Carrido
That's valid.
00:13:41
Chris
Maybe i already am heading down that Warlock path.
00:13:43
Jordyn Carrido
Hey, who knows? Yeah.
00:13:49
Jordyn Carrido
I went with werewolves because I was already thinking about Twilight and I was like, I always was team werewolves and I always wanted to.
00:13:56
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh yeah, I was team Jacob also.
00:13:58
Jordyn Carrido
yeah and they could like you know for that type of werewolf in that canon you can choose when to transform back and forth you're not stuck to just the full moon and it's not like super painful so i i always like was like yeah those kinds of werewolves specifically that's the vibe the like remus lupin painful agonizing transformation on the full moon like
00:14:06
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:14:21
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Right.
00:14:21
Jordyn Carrido
that's that's a no thank you. I'd rather be a witch in that universe. So kind of I guess it kind of depends on the universe and the lore in in what universe you're talking about.
00:14:27
Chris
That's true. It's so different in every one,
00:14:29
Sarah-Daye McDougall
is true. Yeah.
Supernatural Experiences and Ghost Stories
00:14:31
Jordyn Carrido
Because Harry Potter definitely would rather be a witch than anything else.
00:14:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
ah ah Yeah,
00:14:35
Jordyn Carrido
But then in Twilight, I'm going to go werewolf.
00:14:36
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Definitely.
00:14:39
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah, I think this the same. Like I would – I've always been drawn to werewolf stories like Teen Wolf, the MTV show. um I was Team Jacob with the whole Twilight stuff. um Even in True Blood, which is like very vampire-centered, was still, you know, drawn to the werewolf storylines.
00:14:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um And just like the transformation – in general whether it's a wolf or not like anamorphs i think that was the book series um um and just being able to transition into any kind of animal but werewolves is obviously the most well known of that
00:15:05
Jordyn Carrido
here Yeah, yeah.
00:15:15
Chris
My wife's watching ah Vampire Diaries as we speak, so I think she'd probably be choosing vampires.
00:15:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
oh vampires there is definitely like a a huge following of i mean the i think the vampire is probably
00:15:22
Jordyn Carrido
That's a valid.
00:15:28
Sarah-Daye McDougall
one of the biggest like horror halloween themed media um i mean starting with dracula and then you know true blood twilight um they all kind of every generation i feel like has a vampire story
00:15:46
Chris
It's an interesting concept, man.
00:15:46
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, you would have thought covering Dracula would have picked vampires, but no.
00:15:50
Jordyn Carrido
and Werewolves.
00:15:51
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah
00:15:54
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay. um Would you rather spend the night in a haunted house or in the woods with something watching you?
00:16:03
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah. probably a haunted house because there's like i could find places to hide and like escape i could escape the haunted house like in the woods like i have zero survival survival skills like i i'm done for in the woods
00:16:13
Sarah-Daye McDougall
True.
00:16:20
Chris
Yeah, probably Haunted House, just because I don't want to be cold all night.
00:16:24
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I'm going haunted house also, but I just think it would be more fun to explore the haunted house than being watched in the woods.
00:16:24
Jordyn Carrido
yeah that was
00:16:33
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um Okay. Favorite spooky or villainous character from a book or a film or TV show?
00:16:43
Jordyn Carrido
Chris, if you have an answer, jump in because I'm pondering.
00:16:53
Chris
I don't know that I yet.
00:16:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
It's not really a spooky story, but she's a witch. So um I'm going to talk about her.
00:17:05
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And she is a character from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J.
00:17:08
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Maas. Her name is Manon Blackbeak. um And she is a witch.
00:17:13
Sarah-Daye McDougall
So I'm going to, even though she's not spooky or villainous, although she could be considered a little of both. um Yeah, I'm going to say her. Yeah.
00:17:23
Jordyn Carrido
so valid. um I guess I'll stick with Throne of Glass since I'm rereading them right now. ah And I'll go with Maeve. I think she's a really she's a really fascinating villain and she's she's a fae, but she's like dark fae.
00:17:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh yeah.
00:17:40
Jordyn Carrido
And so she's got that darkness, that spookiness, and she's like very evil and very dangerous.
00:17:40
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:17:46
Jordyn Carrido
And she's very fascinating to me as a character. So I'll go with Maeve and her spidery tendencies.
00:17:50
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:17:54
Chris
She is very interesting. Well, that leaves it to me. I think that I've, well, I don't know. I don't know if I ever consider the villains ever fully villain in some cases. I really enjoy villains characters as more ah complex and so um but I think I'd probably choose my favorite lately oh well Scarlet Witch is my favorite kind of villainous character because she's always interesting especially the way Elizabeth Olsen plays her but even the comics I enjoy her performances both hero and villain
00:18:21
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah
00:18:28
Sarah-Daye McDougall
okay do you oh yeah um do we think that ah scarlet witch will be back in the mcu proper
00:18:28
Jordyn Carrido
And then Marvel Zombies too.
00:18:31
Jordyn Carrido
That was fun.
00:18:38
Chris
Seems like it. I think so.
00:18:39
Jordyn Carrido
i certainly hope so.
00:18:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:18:41
Chris
There's a path in the comics that so they did recently that could be even that that version of her. There's a new and comic called the TV, or it was like a TVA comic that's based off of Loki, where they actually have ah Scarlet Witch in like a stasis chamber in the TVA somewhere that looks like the one from Doctor Strange.
00:18:59
Chris
So there very well could be that they bring in the TVA and bring her back.
00:19:00
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay.
00:19:02
Chris
So from the comics.
00:19:04
Sarah-Daye McDougall
and they I mean, the yeah, the TVA has been in um the Deadpool movie, so...
00:19:04
Jordyn Carrido
I'm on board.
00:19:09
Chris
Mm-hmm. We know there.
00:19:10
Sarah-Daye McDougall
ah of course loki but um yeah i mean i could definitely see them not shying away from the tva
00:19:19
Chris
Yeah, it'd be a fun way to bring that back around.
00:19:22
Chris
We saved it because we knew there's a point.
00:19:25
Sarah-Daye McDougall
okay um do we believe in ghosts or the supernatural and or
00:19:32
Jordyn Carrido
Yes, i have a ghost story from when I was little. i was like two and I was in my grandmother's house and I went into an empty room where there's no other people, know like picture frames, nothing.
00:19:45
Jordyn Carrido
And I was like pointing to the corner like, oh, that's Grandpa Corrito's Grandpa Corrito. My parents were like,
00:19:50
Jordyn Carrido
what are you talking about? Cause there's no photos of him in there. Like I, he died before I was born. So I never met him. ah So I had, i just was pointing to the corner of the room, the empty corner, like there he is.
00:20:01
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Wow.
00:20:02
Jordyn Carrido
He's right there. And my parents were like, let's get, let's go.
00:20:03
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:20:05
Jordyn Carrido
We're going to get out of here now. So yeah I absolutely believe in ghosts and spirits and that you can connect with your loved ones after they've Absolutely.
00:20:15
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:20:17
Chris
I grew up very spiritual, um think and and so I was very much into the concept of ah heaven and hell and the ah ah spiritual in that direction and you know the forces of good and evil in the world working through demons and angels.
00:20:25
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:20:32
Chris
I don't know that I really am all that, I believe all that much now, but I definitely ah grew up with that experience of thinking that direction.
00:20:42
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes, I believe in ghosts also. um and i don't know if I wanted to to define them as ghosts, but I definitely believe in some sort of spiritual realm. um I've also had some um spooky interactions as well as some like good hearted ones.
00:21:01
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um So and I live in a... um
00:21:07
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um Possibly.
00:21:10
Sarah-Daye McDougall
i'm I'm pretty sure. So um i live in Virginia. And so lots of, lots of history in Virginia. And my parents always said our first house um was haunted and they saw some stuff.
00:21:23
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And I don't know that I remember seeing anything in that house. um But as an adult, um I've had some things that I – um would definitely define a spiritual.
00:21:34
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um One, so one um was I was working in this hotel um and it was part of a resort, but it was, they call it the stepchild of the resort because it's out by itself. It's really run down and our offices were in the basement and I was working there alone um in the office one day and the door was shut as I do when I'm working in the office alone.
00:22:01
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And um I saw like a shadow walking back and forth. um
00:22:05
Jordyn Carrido
No, thank you. No, thank you.
00:22:06
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And I went out to check and there was nothing there. um So I went back, closed the door and and ah again, saw the shadow walking back and forth just outside the door. but um And so I walked back out again, nobody.
00:22:20
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And then later, um when more people had come back and and it was a little bit more hustle and bustle, um I was asking some people around, like, you know, um did anybody die here? Do you think there's any ghosts in this building? And apparently there was a shelf a chef that died there.
00:22:36
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um And he was very much like a a really great guy. And like um what they said, he was probably like guarding my door, like walking back and forth, guarding it um from other ghosts.
00:22:54
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um And then I have another spookier one um where I was in the anthropology club of at my college and we played with a Ouija board, which I will never, ever do again.
00:23:07
Sarah-Daye McDougall
ah Because listeners, don't do it because when you use a Ouija board, you are opening up yourself as a vessel for spirits to use. And it is not fun. So um some creepy things happened and I ended up going to our anthropology professor and telling her what was happening.
00:23:22
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And she was like, okay, well, I've got so many spirits following me. I'll just call them away. It'll be no problem. It'll end. And it did after that. like So whatever she did worked. The spirit never bothered me again. um
00:23:35
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:23:36
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, I did not mess with Ouija boards or anything like that.
00:23:37
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah. No.
00:23:39
Jordyn Carrido
That is that's, no thank you.
Fall Treats and Pumpkin Spice Opinions
00:23:45
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Let's bring the mood back up. ah Pumpkin spice everything or hard fasts?
00:23:52
Jordyn Carrido
It's been growing on me this year specifically. I used to be like, I hate all like pumpkin.
00:23:57
Jordyn Carrido
Pumpkin spice is terrible. And then I'm like, well, this thing is pretty good. And, you know, I like a cookie and I like a muffin. And I tried the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. I'm like, oh, it's not as bad as I remember it.
00:24:07
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:24:07
Jordyn Carrido
So it's growing on me this year.
00:24:09
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Exactly. Same answer.
00:24:11
Chris
Not a pumpkin fan, not a pumpkin spice fan. I'm more of the um apple cider and anything, you know, salted caramel is one but as my go-to drink for Starbucks.
00:24:16
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Apple cider.
00:24:22
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, me too.
00:24:22
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I love a salted caramel, like a salted caramel cookie, a so salted caramel chocolate. Salted caramel is so good.
00:24:32
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I think all the fall treats are, I don't think you can go wrong with a fall treat.
00:24:37
Jordyn Carrido
Yeah, that's true.
00:24:37
Chris
I'm a big candy corn fan, which may be controversial.
00:24:40
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh, no
00:24:41
Jordyn Carrido
Hot takes from Chris.
00:24:41
Sarah-Daye McDougall
My – no.
00:24:42
Jordyn Carrido
Hot takes. Yeah.
00:24:44
Sarah-Daye McDougall
My family is loves candy corn. And Maya, this whole time, as as Halloween was coming up and October was coming up, she was like are going get candy corn?
00:24:52
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Are going candy corn? It's daddy's favorite candy. Are we going candy corn? So we finally got candy corn in like the last week of September. I saw it at the grocery store. I'm like, all right, let's put that in the cart.
00:25:01
Chris
I have to limit myself on how much I can buy because I will basically eat it in a day if I buy a bag. So I have to just say, OK, you can have one bag this season. or you
00:25:09
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And do you ever eat it like color, like bite the top off and then bite the middle and then eat the bottom?
00:25:15
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Am I a weirdo?
00:25:15
Jordyn Carrido
That's the correct way to do it.
00:25:15
Chris
Not so much anymore.
00:25:16
Jordyn Carrido
No, yes you're correct, Sarah. You're correct.
00:25:18
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Thank you.
00:25:18
Chris
i like the ones with like the pumpkins in it and stuff too, though. I i like the um the larger chunks there.
00:25:23
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I don't like the pumpkin ones.
00:25:25
Chris
oh they're actually my favorite, I think.
00:25:27
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh, funny.
00:25:28
Chris
little more to them.
00:25:28
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I don't know. I think they're like two. Maybe it's just like, I don't know, the shape. ah
00:25:34
Chris
Well, it's mostly brown sugar, if I understand right. So, I mean, on all the candy corn stuff, it's that's its main ingredient.
00:25:39
Chris
So, um I think they have a little bit more of it there.
00:25:40
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm hmm. Yeah, I don't know why.
00:25:44
Jordyn Carrido
Well, it's the same thing with Reese's. Like my fiance says, he's like the Christmas tree ones are the best ones. And like, it's the same stuff. It's the same chocolate. It's the same peanut butter as year round. He's like, no, they're different.
00:25:55
Jordyn Carrido
And the Christmas tree ones are better. The pumpkin ones are better. I'm like, whatever you say.
00:25:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah, the pumpkins are the best.
00:26:00
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Well, and I think the thing is like, okay, the shapes, the pumpkins in the Christmas trees, and I think don't they have eggs for Easter? there The chocolate isn't as hard as the actual Reese's Cup, and I feel like it's like less.
00:26:13
Chris
I think a little more peanut butter too the way there.
00:26:15
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:26:15
Chris
Yeah. The balance is different.
00:26:16
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um and Yes, I think it balances out different than a Reese's Cup. I love a Reese's Cup too, but there is something about – they're softer.
00:26:24
Sarah-Daye McDougall
i don't know. They're just better. Yeah.
Dream Spooky Worlds
00:26:29
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay, we'll finish it up with our last question, which is if you could live inside one spooky book or movie or show world for a day, which one would it be?
00:26:50
Jordyn Carrido
i So, okay, so there's this duology. It's the one dark window two twisted crowns.
00:26:59
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh yeah.
00:27:00
Jordyn Carrido
ah Rachel Gillig is the author, I think.
00:27:02
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Mm-hmm.
00:27:03
Jordyn Carrido
um I really loved that, that those two books. I think the the world building was, it was very different. It was very unique. um And so they have like these tarot cards basically, and each tarot card gives you different abilities.
00:27:18
Jordyn Carrido
So I'd like to explore that world and like test out what the different abilities, like how they, what they feel like, how they work.
00:27:25
Jordyn Carrido
um So i I like to visit that world for just for a day, just to see what's up.
00:27:29
Sarah-Daye McDougall
yeah That sounds fascinating.
00:27:33
Chris
I have them over on the shelf there because my wife loves them and has been trying to get me to read them forever. It's just not been on top my list yet, so but I will get to them eventually.
00:27:41
Jordyn Carrido
They're very good.
00:27:43
Chris
I hear that constantly.
00:27:43
Jordyn Carrido
They're very good.
00:27:45
Chris
So definitely what i'll one of them I'll get to soon. um Spooky Universe. I think there's some certain parts of the...
00:27:53
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Or just go ahead.
00:27:56
Chris
Marvel has its darker sides too, and i pretty much will always look for an excuse to go into the Marvel Universe.
00:27:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Hmm.
00:28:02
Chris
The last few years in the comics, ah they've been putting out a Halloween special that is Tales from the Crypt, and it's actually Stephen Strange's brother that basically is your guide through this world of ah the Halloween ah spookiness, and it's kind of it's been really fun ah version of the Marvel Universe. But...
00:28:23
Chris
um That like Werewolf by Night and all the the spookier characters of that that have been much more explored recently have been something I'd really love to be a part of for a bit if I had to choose one.
00:28:36
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:28:37
Sarah-Daye McDougall
um I'm going to go with ah Teen Wolf. It's just sticking out to me. um I loved the show when it was on MTV. um And so i like I think it would just be fun to be in that world with them. And you know they had a really nice close-knit group of friends there.
00:28:58
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yeah.
00:29:00
Chris
Any TV shows with Halloween episodes that stick out to anybody that they love?
00:29:00
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Okay, well...
00:29:04
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Oh...
00:29:06
Jordyn Carrido
Suite Life Zack and Cody Halloween episode is the most iconic Halloween episode I've ever seen in my life. I love that episode.
00:29:13
Jordyn Carrido
We always used to like race to the TV like in October. Like, is it on today? Is it on today? And we'd watch it from beginning to end every single time it was on. It sticks with me so much.
00:29:25
Jordyn Carrido
I love that episode.
00:29:25
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I love that.
00:29:27
Chris
the experience of having to wait for TV to come on to watch it.
00:29:30
Jordyn Carrido
Oh my gosh.
00:29:30
Sarah-Daye McDougall
oh um okay i i still to this day it makes me so sad and um it was this this has nothing to do with halloween but um the wild thornberries and they have like a special and it was like a three episode arc or something um and eliza thornberry had met this boy and the final episode teased her kissing the boy and I was so excited um and I don't know what happened but I went to go watch the final episode and there was a time change or something but the episode did not come on I was so distraught and I till this day don't know if Eliza kissed the boy or not
00:30:11
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I know.
00:30:11
Jordyn Carrido
That's tragic.
00:30:12
Sarah-Daye McDougall
It is so tragic.
00:30:12
Jordyn Carrido
It's probably streaming somewhere.
00:30:14
Chris
Yeah, you got to find it now.
00:30:14
Sarah-Daye McDougall
I know. It is. No, and we do. And we've seen the movie with the girls and i um And so we started watching the show and I was like, finally, I'm finally going to see this episode at some point.
00:30:25
Sarah-Daye McDougall
And we we fell off. So now that this brought this back to my memory, i am going to
Favorite Halloween TV Episodes
00:30:30
Sarah-Daye McDougall
let's go back to watching the Wild Thornberrys.
00:30:30
Chris
Get back into there.
00:30:33
Chris
um I think that some of the most fun ones are Brooklyn Nine-Nines Halloween episodes.
00:30:38
Sarah-Daye McDougall
Yes, the heist, right?
00:30:38
Chris
They just they always prank people, the heist.
00:30:39
Jordyn Carrido
The Halloween heists. Yes.
00:30:42
Chris
Those are so much fun.
00:30:43
Sarah-Daye McDougall
those Those are good ones.
00:30:49
Sarah-Daye McDougall
