Today's reading will cover Jeremiah Chapters 38, 39:1-18, 40:1-6, 52:6-27, 2 Kings Chapter 25:3-23, and 2 Chronicles 36:17-20. Today we will read about Jeremiah being thrown into a well by leaders because he is delivering God's message for Judah that is advising the people to surrender to Babylon. We will see king Zedekiah not standing up as king and allowing his leaders to do what they want, then asking Jeremiah in secret to tell him what God says. We will also see a courageous leader from Cush (Ethiopia) who spoke up for Jeremiah and rescued him from the well. In today's reading God's prophesies concerning Babylon capturing the rest of Judah, burning it, and capturing king Zedekiah will be fulfilled. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God's provision for Jeremiah throughout his calling to proclaim God's words as well as God's provision for the Cushite man who courageously spoke up on Jeremiah's behalf when he was thrown into the well. We will be encouraged to  be who God created us to be and do the good works God has prepared in advance for us to do. It can't possibly be as hard for us as it was for Jeremiah to keep doing what God wanted him to do- Jeremiah was repeatedly jailed, beaten, and suffered for obeying God, yet through it all God provided for him and eventually Jeremiah was able to return to Judah and live in peace, after God's judgment was rendered on Judah. Let us not be like king Zedekiah who was constantly too scared to do anything he was supposed to be doing- shepherding God's people, obeying God by surrendering, speaking up for Jeremiah. Instead, be encouraged by seeing that God will take care of us the way He took care of Jeremiah and the Cushite leader who stepped up to speak on Jeremiah's behalf and rescued him from the well. God protected him at the final fall of Babylon as a result of his faith in God, the same way He protected Jeremiah, and God can protect us, too, as we obey God and have faith in Him to do what He calls us to do.

Introduction to the Day by Day Kids Bible

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome everybody. Today is July 5th. You are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. And I want to thank you for joining me today as we have our reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17
Speaker
If you are new, I want to extend an especially welcome ah warm welcome to you today. If you are just finding this event, don't be discouraged by the fact that we are using the day-by-day kids Bible.
00:00:30
Speaker
This just means that the story is written at a level that we can understand very easily, like using an NIV or an NIRV version of the Bible. And it is written in storybook format and in chronological order.
00:00:45
Speaker
So the Bible is not presented chronologically. And so as you go through the different books of the Bible, events may be repeated and ah because they have been recorded in more than one book of the Bible.
00:00:58
Speaker
This Bible takes all of those events out of all of the different books and consolidates them so that we get one continuous story in one continuous timeline.
00:01:10
Speaker
And it allows us to have big picture of the whole story of the Bible, all the way from Genesis to Revelation.

Personal Insights and Resources

00:01:19

00:02:35
Speaker
And you can download that. It doesn't cost anything. You don't have to enter your email address. You don't have to subscribe to anything. This is just a little motivational tool to help you see your achievement and how far you have you have come and participated.
00:02:50
Speaker
And then when you get through at the end of the year, you will have a full calendar of having read the Bible this year. So thank you for joining me, whether you are here watching on video or whether you are listening on your favorite podcasting app.
00:03:06

It's over there for you. I also have it on my site so that you can click down under that heading of read the Bible in one year and choose whether you would like to watch or listen. So I have that as many places as I could think of there for you.
00:03:58
Speaker
You want to be sure we are spreading the word about reading God's word. So I'm trying to make God's word accessible anywhere and everywhere for you guys. And if you know of somebody who would be interested in following along with this event, please share it. Sharing is caring, as we say.
00:04:13
Speaker
and we are looking to spread the word about reading God's word.

Jeremiah's Struggles and Political Intrigue

00:04:17
Speaker
That is the most important thing here. So we are going to head into our reading for the day. We are covering in the book of Jeremiah, as well as getting some of our reading from 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
00:04:33
Speaker
Our first section comes from Jeremiah chapter 38 and 39, and it's entitled, A Muddy Well.
00:04:42
Speaker
Jeremiah told people these words from God. If you stay in the city, you will die. You will die fighting. You will die of hunger. You will die of sickness.
00:04:55
Speaker
But if you go out to Babylon's army, you will live.
00:05:02
Speaker
Some of the king's men heard what Jeremiah was saying and they told the king about it. They told the king and said, he should be killed. He is making our army feel bad.
00:05:14
Speaker
He is making the people feel bad too. And he is not thinking about what's good for the people. He is thinking about what's bad for them. Take Jeremiah, said King Zedekiah, and do whatever you want.
00:05:26
Speaker
I can't stop you.
00:05:30
Speaker
So they took Jeremiah and they put him in a well in the guard's yard. They let him down into the well by ropes. There was just mud at the bottom and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.
00:05:43
Speaker
But a leader at the palace heard about it and he was from Cush, which is Ethiopia. He went to see the king and the king was sitting at the gate. My king, said the man from Cush.
00:05:58
Speaker
These men have been mean. They put Jeremiah into a well. He will die there when we run out of food. Get 30 men, said the king.
00:06:11
Speaker
Pull Jeremiah out of the well so he won't die. So the leader from Cush got 30 men and then he went to a room in the palace. He got some old rags and clothes and he tied ropes to them.
00:06:25
Speaker
He let them down into the well. Put these old rags and clothes under your arms, said the man from Cush. And that way the ropes won't hurt your arms.
00:06:37
Speaker
Jeremiah put the old rags under his arms, and then he put the ropes under his arms. The men pulled him out of the well. Then Jeremiah stayed in the guard's palace yard.
00:06:51
Speaker
King Zedekiah asked Jeremiah to come and see him again, and they met at one of the doors to the worship house. I have something to ask you, said the king.
00:07:03
Speaker
Don't keep any secret from me. If I answer you, you will kill me, said Jeremiah. Even if I tell you what to do, you won't listen.
00:07:15
Speaker
But King Zedekiah promised, I won't kill you. I won't give you to the people who want to kill you. So Jeremiah spoke these words from God.
00:07:27
Speaker
If you give up to Babylon, you will live. But if you don't give up to them, you won't live. Babylon will take over the city.
00:07:38
Speaker
The people will burn it down and you won't get away.
00:07:44
Speaker
I'm scared of our Jewish people who are fighting with the Babylon, said the king. The army of Babylon might give me to them and then they would be mean to me. They won't give you to the Jewish people, said Jeremiah.
00:07:58
Speaker
oh Obey God. Please do what I tell you. Then things will go well. Your life will be saved. But God showed me what will happen if you don't obey.
00:08:14
Speaker
The women in the palace will be taken to Babylon's leaders, and these women will say that your friends lied to you. They'll say your feet are stuck in mud and your friends have left you. Babylon will also take your wives and children.
00:08:28
Speaker
You won't get away, then they will burn down this city, said Jeremiah. Don't let anybody know that we talked about this, said the king.
00:08:40
Speaker
If you do, then you might be killed. And the leaders might hear about our meeting. So they might ask you what you said to me. Tell them that you asked the king to not send you to jail.
00:08:54
Speaker
The leaders did come to Jeremiah and they did ask him about his talk with the king. So Jeremiah told them, I asked the king not to send me to jail. So the leaders didn't ask anything else about it.
00:09:06
Speaker
And no one had heard him talk with the king. So Jeremiah stayed in the guards yard until Babylon took over Jerusalem.
00:09:16
Speaker
God gave Jeremiah a message for that palace leader in Cush. I am getting ready to keep my promise about Jerusalem. You will see it come true, but I will save you.
00:09:29
Speaker
You won't die because you trust in me.
00:09:36
Speaker
Our next section is entitled, Running Away at Night.
00:09:42
Speaker
Now Jerusalem ran out of food and there was nothing to eat. Then Babylon's army broke through the city wall and the leaders of Babylon sat at the middle gate. Zedekiah and his army saw the leaders of Babylon.
00:09:56
Speaker
So Zedekiah and his army ran. They left the city at night and they went through the king's garden. Then they went through the gate between the two walls and they headed for the Jordan Valley.
00:10:11
Speaker
But Babylon's army chased them and they caught up with them. King Zedekiah was taken to the king of Babylon. The king of Babylon killed his sons.
00:10:23
Speaker
Then he put out King Zedekiah's eyes and he put metal chains on Zedekiah and took him to Babylon. King Zedekiah was in jail there until he died.
00:10:36
Speaker
The army of Babylon set God's worship house on fire. They burned down the palace and all the houses. They burned down every important building.
00:10:50
Speaker
They broke down all the city walls.
00:10:54
Speaker
Babylon's army took the priests and the leaders. They took them to the king of Babylon and he killed them.
00:11:03
Speaker
Babylon's army broke the things at the worship house. They took all the metal to Babylon. They took all the pots and dishes too, and they took things that were gold and silver.
00:11:17
Speaker
Babylon's army took some of the poorest people and the workers, but they left some of the poor people there. These people didn't own anything. So the captain of Babylon's army gave them fields.
00:11:31
Speaker
Then the people of Judah were taken away and they were taken to Babylon.

Jeremiah's Freedom and Reflections

00:11:36
Speaker
The king of Babylon chose Gedalia to be in charge of Judah. And the king also gave him cap gave his captain orders about Jeremiah.
00:11:46
Speaker
The king said, take care of Jeremiah and don't hurt him. Do whatever he asks you to do. So the captain took Jeremiah out of the guard's yard.
00:11:58
Speaker
And Jeremiah was in chains. He was with the people being taken to Babylon. But the captain said to Jeremiah, God told about this trouble. And now it has happened.
00:12:10
Speaker
God did what he said he would do. And God did this because these people sinned against him and they did not obey God. I'm going to set you free now, said the captain.
00:12:23
Speaker
You can come with me to Babylon if you want to, and I will take care of you there. But if you don't want to come, you don't have to. Look, the whole land is here, so go wherever you want.
00:12:35
Speaker
Then the captain said, go to Gedalia. He is in charge of Judah now. Live with him or live wherever you want. Then the captain gave food to Jeremiah.
00:12:48
Speaker
He also gave him a present. Then he let Jeremiah go. Jeremiah got to go home. He got to stay with his own people who were left in Judah.
00:13:04
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:13:10
Speaker
Wow, I feel like we have some some good things that have happened here with Jeremiah finally being set free. And it was so good to see God taking care of Jeremiah.
00:13:21
Speaker
And it was so good to see the man from Ethiopia or Cush going to King Zedekiah and speaking up on Jeremiah's behalf.
00:13:33
Speaker
We see that the King Zedekiah, he is not very strong in his character. He is not choosing to obey God, but yet he keeps asking Jeremiah, what do I do? What do I do? What is God going to do?
00:13:47
Speaker
And we see the consistency that God has. He is repeating again and again that he just needs to surrender to Babylon. And then he will live and the people will live and his family will live.
00:14:00
Speaker
But he doesn't have the strength to do so. hes just, he's choosing not to And we see here that but exactly what God said would happen, happened.
00:14:12
Speaker
He was very much afraid and not very much of a leader of the people. He was more of a king by name and he wasn't really seeming to be in charge. He even let the guards do whatever they wanted um or the people rather, not not the guards, particularly the people who were complaining about Jeremiah, he let them do what they wanted saying, I can't stop you.
00:14:36
Speaker
And is that true? He was the king. he was so He was able to stop them. He was the one who was supposed to be shepherding the people, leading the people.
00:14:48
Speaker
And he was not leading the people. He was instead just being drug around. He didn't even want them to know when he was going to speak with Jeremiah. He kept calling Jeremiah in secret.
00:14:58
Speaker
We've seen this several times in our reading where he has gone to Jeremiah secretly. and asked Jeremiah, what does God say? What does God say? and every time he did so, God said, you need to give up and to go to Babylon because if you do, i will still let you live.
00:15:18
Speaker
If you don't, then you will die. and we see that when he was finally captured, that the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, put out his eyes and then he had to stay in prison for the rest of his life until he died.
00:15:33
Speaker
So things did not go well for him. He also had to see before he lost his eyes, his family was killed right before him, it says. So this man was not strong in his faith. He was not putting faith in God.
00:15:48
Speaker
Whereas we see the man from Cush, who in our big Bible tells us he was from Ethiopia. He spoke up for Jeremiah. What little he could do. So part of our daily application today is that you don't know how much you can do by speaking up.
00:16:06
Speaker
He was able to save Jeremiah from the from the muddy pit, from the well that was empty, that was stuck with mud. And he was even thoughtful of Jeremiah by getting cloths for him to put under his arms so that the ropes wouldn't hurt him.
00:16:22
Speaker
So I want us to be encouraged to step out of our comfort zone and speak up for people who may not have the ability to speak up for themselves. Jeremiah was a very faithful servant for God.
00:16:34
Speaker
He did everything he was supposed to do. He obeyed. He suffered the consequences at human hands for what he was doing for God. But we see that throughout it all, God preserved Jeremiah's life. God provided for him.
00:16:50
Speaker
In our big picture, let's look at Jeremiah's life. When there was famine, he provided supernaturally for him and a widow by having just enough for all of them.
00:17:03
Speaker
There were widows all throughout, but God chose somebody to to be his ah provider that God would provide through ah for both of them.
00:17:14
Speaker
So he blessed that woman as well as Jeremiah by taking care of them. They didn't provide for themselves. Then ah God took care of Jeremiah throughout all of his life as he faced these many beatings and and being in jail and having to be in the stocks. But throughout all of it, God still protected Jeremiah's life.
00:17:41
Speaker
And at the end where we see that Babylon finally did burn down the city, the palace and the worship house, just as God said it would happen.
00:17:53
Speaker
God preserved not just Jeremiah's life, but he also protected the man from Ethiopia who stood up for him and spoke out for him. It does not tell us that God sent him specifically, but this man had faith in God and could see what was going on, and he stepped out, and he spoke up, and he made a difference right where he was.
00:18:15
Speaker
God put him there, and he used that opportunity to to speak up and say something on Jeremiah's behalf. So wherever we may be in the world, whether it's at work or out in the world, it could be at home, wherever we are, we need to look at the situations and see what is happening that may be unjust, unfair.
00:18:37
Speaker
And we need to stand up and do what is right and not be afraid of consequences if we do. The king was afraid to step up and do the right things because he was afraid of even the fellow Jewish people who who were now helping the Babylonians.
00:18:52
Speaker
He didn't want to be mistreated by them. And so he was constantly ruled by fear. Do you think it was easy for Jeremiah to do everything that he did? I don't think it would have been easy for me to do it.
00:19:06
Speaker
But he didn't allow fear to rule him. And he was secure in his faith. He knew what he stood for. He was obedient to God. So we need to be sure that we are being obedient in whatever God calls us to do, to be who we were created to be and speak up when we are ah called by God to speak up, to do whatever good deeds he has for us to do, because we don't know just how far and it's it's going to have effect on
00:19:40
Speaker
And God will honor our effort.

Encouragement for Courageous Living

00:19:42
Speaker
And as we've seen many times, God will still protect those who belong to him, who are doing things for him. And so we should not be afraid, even for our very lives.
00:19:53
Speaker
ah We learned from Jesus that he laid down his very life for us. And he was obedient to God, even and even to death. And we don't know that that's what may happen. it's It's not very common that we may die for what we are needing to do for God, but it it does happen at times. And we've seen that throughout the Bible. and We know that it happens in the world.
00:20:16
Speaker
ah Most of us, I think, listening ah live in areas where it would not cause us death. to to follow God and to do what he's calling us to do. So and want to encourage us to be who God created us to be and not be afraid to speak out and ask God to give us the courage to do whatever it is we need to do for him.
00:20:37
Speaker
So thank you for joining me for today's reading. I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. And I hope that you will share this with somebody and hit that light button that looks like a thumbs up or a heart, but it's really a light, isn't it?
00:20:51
Speaker
Because we are the light of the world. And together we are spreading the word about reading God's word so that other people may also be encouraged and hear this message to step out of their comfort zone and be courageous to do and speak up wherever God has placed you in in your life today.
00:21:11
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day. And I will, as always, be here for everyone again tomorrow.
