Introduction and Chelsea vs. Leicester Fixture Overview

00:00:06
Speaker
sports podcast network Hello and welcome to the Daily Chelsea brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host Matt Blagden and today we're doing crossover Thursday. I'm joined by the only Leicester Warrior of GSPN and it's Jake. Jake how are you doing today?
00:00:26
Speaker
Yeah, I'm good. I'm i'm excited to chat. it's so It's been a long, long international break, which I'm sure all of us can sympathise with that one. Yeah, so I'm excited for the Premier League to be back. I'm probably more excited to watch the other games than maybe keep watching Leicester. But yeah, I'm excited to chat things, Leicester and Chelsea.
00:00:45
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah i excited to get into it because it is quite a tasty fixture for multiple reasons. There's a lot of transfer business between the clubs um Not just players but also managers more recently and um In the head-to-head so far of all the games that Lester and Chelsea have played um it's four wins for Lester six draws and 14 wins for Chelsea so Chelsea is definitely in the the comfortable seats in terms of an overall strong record and And obviously, the last game that we played was the FA Cup 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

Raheem Sterling's Performance and Future at Chelsea

00:01:20
Speaker
A solid, solid game all round. But I am i think from that game alone um and and from as in when we we signed Maresca, it was clear that from Raheem Sterling's display that he wasn't going to be part of Chelsea's future, you know, just from a catalog of bad misses in that game against Leicester. Thankfully, we did score up four other goals to secure that

Enzo Mareska's Departure and Impact on Leicester

00:01:43
Speaker
win.
00:01:43
Speaker
ah But nonetheless, Jake, on Mareska, you know, obviously we, Chelsea have nabbed him from Leicester. He was only at Leicester for a season, but albeit he did get you promoted. And it was a very strong season for Leicester coming back ah up into the Premier League. What do you think the reception will be for Mareska ah at this weekend, at Leicester?
00:02:04
Speaker
in this game, will there be you know a bit of hostility like Potter saw when he went back to Brighton or do you think it will be a a bit more welcoming for Maresca? Yes, I suppose the burning question of the weekend for Leicester fans, I'm intrigued myself if I'm honest. I think you'll be a mixed reception in terms of positive ah because you're quite right. Obviously, we we won the league last season and and came straight back up um and he he did did his job. you know and that was From a fan's perspective, we had to go up
00:02:38
Speaker
ah first time if you like after going down so yeah he did his job um and most of the season it was winning football ah but probably not the most entertaining I think it's fair to say as ah as a general consensus amongst less defense it wasn't the most exciting a lot of games where you'd be one 2-0 up and just really slowing the game down so entertainment factor wasn't always there, if if I'm being honest. um But we got there in the end and we went up and that was the most important thing. and i what I was personally disappointed seeing him go. It would have been really interesting. in its For Leicester fans it's the million dollar question. What would the season have been like if we'd kept him?

Leicester's Playing Style Evolution under Cooper

00:03:18
Speaker
and Would we have been played off the park a bit like Burnley were last year? Would we have
00:03:23
Speaker
got more points than we have under Steve Cooper and um you know we're never really going to know the answer to that and it's I've got sort of um pros and cons to to the argument that we would have been better off with Enzo Mareska but yeah as I say we'll never really know but I think generally yeah there's a mixed bag of feeling we've got good money for him and we might have struggled if he'd stayed because of the type of football he wanted to play he had a lot of non-negotiables and I think generally he'd sort of fallen out with the board because of broken promises so um And if I'm being honest, although Chelsea obviously didn't you know do very well in terms of the league position last year um or or the year before, it's Chelsea and I have to respect that. It's obviously a step up, especially the club coming from the championship. it's It's a big step up and an opportunity.
00:04:10
Speaker
So I sort of I haven't got I didn't have an issue with him leaving I think some fans are probably a little bit resentful. So yeah, that's why I would go with a mixed bag i But we will see on Saturday. Yeah, absolutely. I think that's absolutely right, you know sort of there's never gonna be necessarily an over a Complete emotion, you know across the board with with all the fans. It's it's always gonna be a bit mixed and Just interesting, like, you know, mentioning that, you know, you've got Steve Cooper. What do you make of him as a manager? And would you say that your style of football is more entertaining unto him now um rather than what you saw with Maresco last season?
00:04:49
Speaker
ah Yes and and no, because obviously we haven't won very many games this season it and I think realistically every club, especially a club like Leicester, it's more about winning than anything else. um I think some clubs are very stuck to a style or ah this idea and and you hear about like the West Ham way and Tottenham wanting a certain type of football which It blows my mind most of the time because ah why would you want to sacrifice winning over anything else? But there you go. You know, some fans are genuinely like that and want that. and So, so that you know, and that's, I suppose, the difference between some clubs. But yeah, I think I've enjoyed Steve Cooper style more because it's a little bit more flexible. um We play quicker, a little bit more on the counter-attack, although we have held the ball quite well. And I think he wants to retain the ball if possible, but it depends who you play.
00:05:41
Speaker
ah And maybe there's been a bit more um tempo and fight and guts to to some of the games where Maresco is all about control and calmness. And if you could keep the ball for 30 minutes and keep control without actually having a shot, but keeping the ball, he would happily do it. and nothing listen to that Yeah, and I've watch i tried to watch as many Chelsea games that I have.

Concerns about Chelsea's Future Playing Style

00:06:05
Speaker
I don't think his style is is quite there yet, actually, despite the fact that he's had some really good results. um I don't think his overall idea is there yet, um and that takes time. It happened with us quicker than per se I think it has with Chelsea. So I guess from ah an outside perspective, my concern for Chelsea fans would be
00:06:25
Speaker
When his idea gets more implemented, will the football become a little bit less entertaining? However, you might be more successful. So I'll be intrigued to see what happens as we go on in terms of his style. But yeah, I've answered that. I've ended up answering that question about Enzo Mariska somehow. No, no, no, no. It's a good full circle there. I mean, I think that's really interesting that you say that because from I think a lot of Chelsea fans,
00:06:52
Speaker
we found football and Mariska to be very entertaining in terms of theirs. Last season, we saw a lot of you know chances being created. We just weren't taking them. And there's still an element of that within our team right now with this season. But I would say that you know we I think we're seeing a clear difference from Pochettino to Mariska. And so there's a bit more patience around the slower build up and the passing around the back.
00:07:18
Speaker
to then you know find that gap and then create the chance and and which then hopefully does lead to you know a clear goal, score an opportunity. And I think at the moment it's kind of 50-50 whether we actually finish that chance. um I think we just need to get more efficient as a team. um I guess just as a little fun question, um do you think that Leicester players are more motivated or less motivated by Steve ku Cooper compared to Maruska?
00:07:44
Speaker
um based on his team talks at halftime and before the game? ah Yes, a great question. I like it. um Clearly, based on our performances this season, ah we are better in second halves in almost every game. um I've said that and fought that. So clearly, there's there's something that's going on at halftime because a lot of games we've played so much so much different and better in the second half. so um However, I think players clearly enjoyed playing ah under Enzo Mareska, even when we had a real blip between sort of March and April, and results really really suffered. um I didn't didn't put it down as they've they've lost faith or it's anything to do with the manager.
00:08:25
Speaker
um I think it was outside pressures, ah internal pressures, lots of sort of factors but none of them I personally put down to Enzo Mariska as a man manager. um i did I was critical of him tactically at that point because I felt he could have adapted more and just in terms of sacrificing a little bit of the ball to actually probably gain more balance of the game but I think he would he would happily, um from what I saw, die on his sword, and and he would rather play his way, stick to his principles, and he believes that will be successful. and In fairness to him, we won the league last season, we got there in the end. I think it would be wrong of me to be overly critical of him, because we did get there in the end.
00:09:14
Speaker
However, it it we were only having four or five points from Leeds United who finished third. And if, you know, obviously you we're less able to lose two games, so you have that points difference, we did finish third. And in the p playoffs, I just wonder what would have happened. And again, we'll never know.

Player Transfers: Chelsea and Leicester

00:09:32
Speaker
But until you're in that pressure situation again, and and he will be, I'm sure it's with Chelsea and in terms of a cup or a league position this season at some point, until that happens, I'm intrigued to see how he reacts but I think he's been more, maybe pride pragmatic might be the word I don't know or or realistic with the players he has at Chelsea compared to your Liverpools in Manchester cities at this point whereas we were in the championship and we had the best squad in the league or the second best squad in the league and we were playing no disrespect to teams like Rotherham and Plymouth but they were just going to sit and camp him
00:10:07
Speaker
um Whereas teams in the Premier League generally don't do that. So Maresk has had a bit more flexibility and he has got a very good squad at Chelsea to work with. Yeah, interesting. Lots of points there, Jake. So we've talked about managerial transfers, but more on player transfers between the clubs after this break.

Speaker
Welcome back! Do you have a story to tell? the world Crikey Mikey. Technical district issues everyone. Apologies for that. Zencaster just wants to keep talking about itself. um Anyway, and we're on to player transfers now, Jake. And there's been quite a bit of healthy business between the clubs over the years. um Just five notable names um of business. There's been Drewsbury Hall most recently this summer for 30 million.
00:11:42
Speaker
and Then there was also Fafana for $70 million. Then there was Chillwell for Kante for $30 million. And also Danny Drinkwater for $30 million. So that comes to a total spend of $210 million between the clubs, or you know more accurately,
00:12:02
Speaker
Chelsea paying Leicester for those players. That's quite a nice, generous thing for us to do, you know, give you 20-10 million, isn't it, Jake? Especially for those players. I know, exactly. I'm sure there's some ruin within that. I think the standout, something has to be Kante for 30 million.
00:12:19
Speaker
What a player he was, what what he did for our team and the trophies he helped us win was pretty incredible. And also at that point in time, I was surprised there wasn't a strong bidding war for him really and when we got him. It was a bit of a surprise when we did hunt him. um But none of us, we got him, we got our man.
00:12:36
Speaker
um And then we've got, you know, Fafana and Shearwell sensible buys, you know, in terms of the positioning and their quality, but they've been, you know, let down by injuries for us and that has been a real frustration for us. I think we were seeing a lot more Fafana at the moment and Shearwell does seem to have been, you know, pushed out of the squad. um That may be just because the board want to get money for him.
00:12:59
Speaker
and he's not really in the young profile anymore. um There's a lot of politics around there probably. But then the other players, you know, Kiernan Drewsbury Hall and Denny Drinkwater, they sort of seem almost a kind of, ah you know, finance buy, really, sort of not really necessarily to improve the squad, but just there for the English quota. And they're kind of there, so it makes sense. ah Personally, you know, I would probably rather have Gallagher there's at the club rather than Jusby Hall, but it is what it is. ah Jake, of those five signings, you know is there a player that you know you really wish you didn't sell um or that are there any players that you don't really mind that have gone? um Yeah, what are your thoughts on those signings?
00:13:41
Speaker
Yeah, I'll i' sort of touch on all of them just just briefly with some or more and others, but Kante I'd love to start with. I mean, what a fantastic player. and Obviously the one I regret selling most, but we didn't have a choice here. I don't know if you remember, but he was a release clause. So obviously wed we signed him the year before. We wonderfully won the Premier League, but he had a release clause. so And if I'm honest, I don't know how well known this story is, but he actually didn't want to come to Leicester in the first place. He wanted to go to Marseille, but Marseille wouldn't pay the money. So eventually he had to join us, if you like, for so five million pounds. So we got a bargain. We made a good profit. You're absolutely right. He was worth double, triple what we sold him for. Wonderful player.
00:14:25
Speaker
um But no, no one really begrudged him again. Great character, did a wonderful job for us. So, yeah, Miss Kante a lot, but but good for him um and what a great career he's had. and Yeah, did Danny Dringle and Dewsbury Hall, I think, unfortunately, are going to get very unfairly and compared. And there are there are comparisons between two English quota. Yeah, definitely a tick in the box.
00:14:48
Speaker
similar fees, similar positions, different players, but yeah. um And I agree with you, I love Juice Breerl, but I don't understand selling Connor Gallagher, other than a financial reason, um because I don't, Juice Breerl isn't a step up on Gallagher. I really, really like Connor Gallagher as a player. He's clearly a financial one there.
00:15:07
Speaker
um Yeah, so I suppose that the two that I've left are are the two are most harsh and negative on him. Ben Chilwell is a lad from Milton Keynes who came from our Academy, so he never really felt like a Leicester lad if I'm honest. I didn't all warm to him a lot other than he was a great left back. He did a really good job for us, but I can't say I was that disappointed seeing him leave. um We saw his quality leave the team, but ah ah I've got to mention the Cup Final because I was very lucky to be there with him knee sliding after he scored and I've got to say that's the most delighted I've ever been in a football stadium when a goal was scored out. I jumped for Join the Air partly because obviously it meant we we had a couple of minutes to hold out to win but also because it was him and I just thought how how wonderful, I'll be honest. so yeah and that That did make um make my day even better that it was him. but yeah so
00:16:01
Speaker
Yeah for foreigners the one i've left to last and and i mentioned off air and i won't say what what list i put him on because we can't swear on the podcast but yeah he's he's on a bad list i can say that he the reason he upsets me so much and i still have that.
00:16:17
Speaker
hatred it is a hatred and I saved that for him because he refused to play he'd just signed a new contract not long before and he he refused to play he kicked up a real fuss and we we he'd come back from two big injuries with us he'd um and and we'd held him back he'd come back in the team and he was loved he was one of my favourite players he he he was brilliant ah probably the best centre back I've ever seen and I actually probably will ever see play for Leicester I really thought that highly of him And his injuries have probably stopped him becoming the player. I think he could have done I don't think he ever will reach that level because of injuries. He's still obviously reached a fantastic level I I do admire him, especially this season playing every game But again, I don't think he'll reach level. He could have done ah but yeah, that they're refusing to play um But in hindsight, we shouldn't have been surprised. He did exactly the same thing at Sontertien to join us So he clearly had form for it um
00:17:15
Speaker
And you never know, it wouldn't surprise me if you did it again in some capacity at Chelsea, as I say, he's done it twice now. So yeah, it was the the refusing to play and messing us around after a finny bim through. So yeah, he's won. I think you'll get a few boos on Saturday when he's named on this team sheet. Interesting. Lots of insights there, Jake. Thanks for that. um Also, as in I did a I found particularly um the relationship between Chillwell and Lester very, very interesting because a couple of times when, you know,

Upcoming Chelsea vs. Leicester Game Analysis

00:17:47
Speaker
not in the Cup Final, but when we did score against you um a few seasons ago, um we did do a big knee slide and then, you know, sort of cup in the ears and everything. Yeah. And the fans were, you know, giving him some and everything like that. And not knowing the backstory, I found that just really surprising because obviously I understand players can get quite ah
00:18:07
Speaker
emotional about some players um and think really highly of them and then when they go to a big club they somewhat see a bit of disrespect but I i slightly understand that but also I think you know if you're in their position what are you gonna do you know so yeah yeah if you do the same job better opportunities bigger pay like surely you have to go surely um But yeah, very interesting that he had that Milton Keynes backstory and um didn't quite ever ah fit in. Transit transfers, player transfers, um which can go to another quick break. And then we're actually going to talk about the big game this weekend.

Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. Welcome back. This podcast is part of a global sport. What's going on here? Crikey Mikey. I press the button once, it plays twice. That never happens with any other of my other technology, so weird. Anyway, who knows? Jake, we've got um the big game this weekend. Leicester currently sitting in 15th. Chelsea sitting in third.
00:19:37
Speaker
ah But only nine points, you know Separate us and you know sort of for that being pretty much the entire league That kind of does show how congested the league is at the moment and how it is mainly just separated on goal difference We kick off at 12 30 so the first game back um After the international break typically Chelsea aren't very good after in an international break But I really do think Chelsea do need to get a full three points here for us to kick on with our top four charge um How do you see the the game panning out and do you see any big differences in your lineup?
00:20:12
Speaker
Well, yeah, so the big news for us is Fotawi, our wonderful right winger, unfortunately, has picked up an ACL injury during the international break, so he's out for the season. and um Jordan Ives also picked up a knoll, Jimmy Vardy's injured. um There's another injury that escapes my mind while I'm thinking about it, but yeah, so we are struggling a bit. Buenonotto suspended, he's another one out, so yeah, we're in attack, we're we're struggling a bit.
00:20:38
Speaker
um To be honest, um it's funny you say that. I didn't even realise it was nine points that separated us too much because it feels a long way, a big gap between the teams in terms of what I've watched, in terms of ah how it feels. So, yeah, I think it's going to be difficult for us. Actually, ah ah I was thinking the same thing. Playing after an international break certainly suits us more.
00:21:01
Speaker
We've obviously had less players go away. um We're at home. um Lots of different factors that certainly play into it. So yeah, it does suit us more. So hopefully that will bring a bit of a more evenness to the game. It's going to be difficult for us. um We've quite kept one clean sheet all season. and um And to be honest, we were fortunate in that in that Bournemouth hit the woodwork about three times. so Yeah, we we haven't I can't again I said every week But I can't see how we're gonna keep it clean cheap because we don't defend well enough as a team as individuals So and the likely it is we're gonna have to score is so cliche We have to score to get at least a point because if you don't if you defend how we do then you'll give goals away. So um There'll be chances that has been every game. We've only we failed to score in any one match. So again, I think we'll probably score at some point and
00:21:51
Speaker
um Even though we have got those issues in attack, which obviously are concerned, I'm sort of hoping the international break will see possibly both sides be a bit bit but rusty. That suits us as obviously an underdog come into it. 15th is fine. you know If we can just stay above that bottom three, then we're absolutely fine. And that's our aim this season. I think for some Leicester fans, I think it's been a bit of an eye opener.
00:22:15
Speaker
because we've been much higher um obviously for a number of seasons before we unfortunately went down but we're a promoted club and I don't think we should underestimate nobody should be underestimating the Premier League and what it can do like we saw when we went down no one expected it and it sucked us right into into the bottom three and we couldn't escape so I think this team has a lot more fight and character about it um but less quality and and I'm sort of hoping it's that fighting character that like we've seen this season in fairness well when we got a draw against Tottenham picking up these points when we've been behind Ipswich, Everton, lots of games, if we can keep doing that then we'll pick up enough points to stay up, that that's my hope.
00:22:59
Speaker
Interesting there, Jake. I mean, yeah, injuries are definitely an issue for us as well because ah even for fun is a bit doubtful. He's got a muscle injury. Lavie is out until next month. Even Reese James this week, he's been labeled with a knock, so he'll be out of the game. And then also, Sancho and Gusto are doubtful with retrospective injuries.
00:23:19
Speaker
So we might have a very different looking ah back line for us. and We might be, you know, sort of obviously seeing Cole Will in the center, but then maybe Tosin and DeSasi lining up, or maybe even Badia Shile, which I think, you know, sort of I speak on about a half of all Chelsea fans that when those three players play, we can get a bit nervous. um They're not the most solid, unfortunately. Yeah. So that is a bit of a shame. And also, you know, sort of Sancho, he started off great, but he has been out for about a month and that's just really disappointing because he does bring another element to to the game. Having said that, I do think we'll have enough to get over the line. um I do think it's going to be a very close one, but I think
00:24:05
Speaker
um We're going to be able to stretch the game with players like Neto, Madeweike and then also sort of Jackson there. He's just a massive handful for defenses and he just really gets up in and is he's just but more than anything. I think he's just a big nuisance for the opposition.
00:24:20
Speaker
um He does have that, you know, instinctive quality to to finish a goal when he doesn't really have to think about it. um But, you know, if you do have to think about it, just lay it off to Palmer and he'll pick the right choice pretty much every time. So so that is solid. And then, yeah, I think Kaiseido, arguably our best player alongside Palmer this season, um I think he's going to be fantastic.
00:24:42
Speaker
And there has been some doubts on Enzo Fernandez, but I think he'll come good so um and settle into the squad eventually. I think our biggest worry ultimately and for every weekend is just Robert Sanchez, the goalie. I have to agree with that from an outside perspective. just I'm not a big fan of Sanchez. I haven't been. I didn't particularly like him at Brighton.
00:25:05
Speaker
um saying that I was always shocked to see Jason still take his place ah but yeah we we sort of saw a why afterwards and but yeah I've never been a fan of Sanchez I was so surprised that Chelsea spent the money they did and they didn't well you obviously did by Jugensen in the summer but hasn't played in the league so Yeah, um Mareska clearly really likes him, they're backing him, but he can drop a a real clanger at any moment. and For a team you've mentioned top four, I'm looking at him going, well, he might be the difference between finishing third, fourth, fifth, sixth in terms of your points.
00:25:45
Speaker
Absolutely. you know sort fee He almost is a bit of a coin flip player because he has that um fantastic save against Bournemouth for that penalty and can make a couple big saves in other games. But then, yeah, um I even think to last season when We played Arsenal at home and he just kicked the ball straight to Declan Rice for their second goal. And it's just really calamitous mistakes like that that really do cost you in the game. And it is one of those things that I think, I mean, just quickly on that as well, there's reports that we might be going in for Kelleher from Liverpool to sign him because he's, you know, sort of second fiddle to Alison, but Liverpool have also signed a goalkeeper from the Spanish league you know waiting to come in.

Chelsea's Goalkeeper Situation and Transfer Rumors

00:26:27
Speaker
And so I think he's just a bit disgruntled or or he's just feeling, you know, I want to play.
00:26:31
Speaker
But I'm not going to get game time here. So he might move, you know, sort of that may be quite, you know, far fetched because that has happened also. so but um um really Yeah. Yeah. God, it's going to sound like I'm really being negative about goalkeeper said, but I don't, I don't like hella her either as a goalkeeper.
00:26:47
Speaker
Yeah, I know. The two you've mentioned, i I don't rate at all. That's very harsh on Kelleher because he's a number two and he hasn't had loads of minutes, but I just think people really over-hype him and in terms of what he is as a skill set, as a goalkeeper. I just ah really don't believe he's going to get... I'm so surprised that Chelsea would look at him and go, he will make him your number one when you've got Jürgensson sat on the bench, and you went for Mads Hermansen, our goalkeeper in the summer, and I love Mads Hermansen, he's a great goalie, and I think he's going to get a massive move in the summer. um ah It might be a price tag thing, but yeah, I surely tell her from Liverpool he's not Chelsea's answer when there's so many more out there, but you know he might prove me wrong, but yeah, I wouldn't have thought he's your answer.
00:27:32
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, like you say, uh, in regards to some of the other transfers we've spoken about, it could just be a financial thing and it could just be that he's willing to take, you know, a cheaper wage. Uh, but then again, you know, sort of if, you know, chose to come in to sign a public player from Liverpool, I can imagine Liverpool, you know, demanding quite a big fee just because yeah they wouldn't want to to sell to a big rival like us. Um, anyway, all right, Jake, we've only got a few moments left. What is your score prediction for this week's game?
00:28:00
Speaker
um Obviously every every week I do this and it and oh god I'm often so negative and and obviously based on our points and and lead position early league position at the moment, yeah, it sort of makes sense. My head is sort of telling me to go for a 2-1 Chelsea win but ah that's so incredibly negative and I hate it. so and Often I always sit seem sitter and say 1-1, but we've drawn 1-1 so many times this season already and I agree, I ah hope hope it is going to be a cagey game. I'm really nervous, like a lot lot of less defence, because the last few results have been poor, there the performances have been pretty poor, we've got a lot of injury, so I am really nervous. I'm not i' not excited about the game at all this weekend, and I've got to be honest. um and I think I'm hoping that international break is going to break Chelsea's flow up a little bit.

ah I think I'm right in saying Chelsea have drawn a couple of last games 1-1 so i'm I'm going to go for a 1-1 draw ah because I'd be really really happy with a ah point I'll be honest from the weekend. Yeah that would be a very solid result for Leicester absolutely. I think a 1-1 draw for Chelsea would be I wouldn't say it would be a disaster but it would be a massive disappointment for us.

I am going to go for a solid 2-1 win. That's quite a safe prediction you know so when you're not quite sure what the what the game's going to entail. but I do think ah can see us conceding, but I do think we've just got enough quality to get over the line um with the players like Parma at our disposal.

um And, you know, sort of mudrick, you know, has been very poor since we signed him, but he's starting to show slight glimpses in, you know, in growing confidence and things like that. And so, you know, even his pace and his ability might be ah a bit of a danger for you guys. Anyway, Jake, thanks so much. I'm afraid we're out of time. Thanks for your time tonight.
