Aston Villa's Season Overview
00:00:11
officialgspn
I'm joined by Joe from Daily Villa. Hello Joe.
00:00:14
Joe
Hello, mate. How are you?
00:00:16
officialgspn
Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. ah A bit nervous going into the game of the weekend, but looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Villa.
00:00:22
Joe
Good, good, good. Thank you very much for having me. Let's do it.
00:00:25
officialgspn
ah First question, nice and easy, what have you fought at the opening games against West Ham and then obviously the defeat against Arsenal at the weekend?
00:00:33
Joe
Yeah, it's ah it's a weird one. I think looking from the outside, um that there kind of looks to be quite a different tale of the tape in those two games. But as far as we're concerned, it's been quite similar stories across both of those. um The West Ham game, a really tough opening day at the London Stadium. I thought we turned up and we we took an early lead through our new side in Amadou Ohnana, a set piece threat, rising high and and and winning a header.
00:00:59
Joe
um And then we looked to try and control the game and in typical Unai Emery fashion, moving the ball around quickly, um trying to sort of dust the cobwebs off. And you could see the cobwebs were there amongst a few of the ah the players.
00:01:12
Joe
um Watkins came off later in that game, Duran came on and eventually won the game for us. But I think that the the main issue for me in that game was in front of goal we weren't particularly clinical. I think it's something we struggled with again in the Arsenal game. I think the Watkins chances in the Arsenal game probably took the headlines, two chances that he should have scored. um One coming in off the the left-hand side. I think a Watkins at his best slots that into the the bottom corner and and we take the lead.
00:01:40
Joe
and then obviously the header which forced a really good save out of Rhea. I think it's ah very much a case of the West Ham game we weren't clinical and we weren't necessarily punished for it against those those big six sides. if you If you don't take your chances with the the quality they have going forward and you you will you will get punished for it. So that's kind of my sort of assessment of our of our Premier League season so far.
00:02:05
officialgspn
Yeah and you know you're right and Arsenal is always going to be a tough game there's no easy game in the Premier League but if you don't take your chances that there isn't another league like it that will instantly almost punish you like Arsenal did it after that second Watkins chance so ah Speaking of him, that was my second question that I had there.
Key Players and Strategy for Villa
00:02:24
officialgspn
He's obviously gone off just after the hour market in both games and and didn't really have any or much of a pre-season, so um what are you expecting from Watkins i guess this weekend and then ah after the international break?
00:02:38
Joe
Yeah, I think it's it's really important for for Watkins to play as much football as possible. and As you said, they didn't really have much of any of of a preseason for Villa coming off the back of his ah Euro's performance. And you can see that, I think, when he played the first two games, he looks um he looks a bit rusty. He looks a bit sluggish. um And that's not the the Watkins that we've become accustomed them to seeing. We all know how much quality he has, both as ah an out-and-out goal scorer and as a creator as well.
00:03:06
Joe
and so I think that the more minutes he has on the pitch and the more we can get back to that Premier League sharpness and I think um I don't want to scare you too much but Leicester is hopefully a great opportunity for him to ah to get some minutes on the pitch and hopefully bag is his first goal of the season.
00:03:22
officialgspn
yeah he's not in my fantasy team at the moment but he's in lots of people so not only am i hoping he doesn't score the weekend because it's lester but also because he will give points to people that i'm in leagues with um but no i yeah looking at at your runner features going forward obviously you've got ourselves and then um three next four matches after that are home games and i think he's hip switch away he might correct me but um opportunity there for so first points whatever happens at the weekend and after the international break so he must be quite hopeful
00:03:52
officialgspn
alongside those games but also then the Champions League coming up.
00:03:56
Joe
Yeah, absolutely. And I think it's so important for our sort of aims of of repeating Champions League football this season to ensure that Villa Park is a fortress and and ensure that it's a really tough place for it for people to to come and take points off.
00:04:10
Joe
So I think the atmosphere over especially last season without our performances is really ramped up and it's important to I think one of the things you I am really stressed is making sure that the atmosphere is is there and that the players are back in those those kind of tough moments throughout the season when we are at home.
00:04:26
Joe
um As you said there with ah a run of of multiple home games in a row, we we need to look to to kind of build out our points tally up there early on in the season to to kind of send a message that we will be in and around those top four places hopefully come the end of the season.
00:04:41
officialgspn
And I listened to your episode where you you started to discuss the UCL draw, which is obviously, I think it's tomorrow, isn't it now? And and um just, if you haven't listened that to guys if you haven't listened to that already, then please go over and and have a listen.
00:04:56
officialgspn
It's really interesting. Obviously, Villa haven't been in the Champions League or European Cup for a long time. So it's really exciting from ah a neutral point of view to see a different team in there um and obviously an English club hopefully will make a good impact.
00:05:08
officialgspn
um Who are you personally hoping for? ah from the draw tomorrow.
00:05:14
Joe
Yeah, it's it's an interesting one. Like you say there, it's not a ah situation being in a big Europa, well, that Champions League draw that that I've especially been accustomed to. I think there's some Villa fans maybe slightly older than me that have memories of winning the European Cup in 82.
00:05:29
Joe
some of those those you know those memories around the tournament. As a 21-year-old fan, I have had nothing but sort of dismal relegation and championship nights away. so This is a definitely a new experience for me, but looking in the kind of pots, we spoke about it briefly on our episode. We were looking at the, the kind of from an away day perspective, um and we highlighted some of the the German teams, your Dortmund's and your Leipzig's.
00:05:54
Joe
They're going to be really exciting for fans to go across to Germany and I'm sure they'll enjoy themselves out there. um But I think the pot system, the new format of it is really interesting. Playing two teams from each pot means you are you are destined to play one of those those big European giant sides. so you know it's whether you want to kind of get the Real Madrid's out of the way or ah whether you kind of anticipate maybe hopefully meeting those further down the line. um But also one thing we spoke about was the the idea of underestimating teams which is something we maybe fell a little bit victim to in the conference league. We went into a semi-final against Olympiarchos and maybe kind of um underestimated the quality and the
00:06:38
Joe
the way in which they are streetwise to European competition. So that's something that especially when we pay those pot three, pot four teams that we can't afford to repeat, we need to go into those games knowing that all the teams in the draw deserve to be there and they have quality or else they wouldn't be there. So I think that's going to be a really important factor in in how well we progress in the Champions League.
00:06:59
officialgspn
Yeah, really interesting. interesting ah I'm lucky that, you know, I've seen Leicester in the Champions League and and obviously we've had a few European runs that they haven't gone too far. But ah although we did play Atletico Madrid, which was incredible, I'm slightly disappointed. We didn't play, ah I don't know, Real Madrid or Barcelona in a competitive game. um But still, you know, it's ah it's a fantastic experience. and ah Hopefully maybe in the future I might get lucky enough to see again. And and then one last question before we go to an
Aston Villa's Transfer Insights
00:07:28
officialgspn
advert. and What have you made of the transfer activity so far? So you've obviously had DRB in Louise, Douglas Louise move on and Ana as you've already mentioned has come in alongside some new faces. What have you made of that?
00:07:39
Joe
It's been a ah really interesting window for Villa. um As you mentioned there, we lost two big players, Douglas Louise are moving to Juventus and Moussa Diabe going to Saudi. They were two players that were sort of and big starting 11 features for Villa last year. um The Douglas Louise deal is particularly interesting in the way it was formatted. There was a lot of controversy around the way the deal was done with PSR regulations.
00:08:04
Joe
um It involved around a reported figure of around 30 million euros and two players coming from Juventus over to Villa, one being Samuel Elling Jr and the other being Enzo Beranecia.
00:08:17
Joe
At the time we record this, Illing Jr. has gone on loan to a fellow Champions League cop, Bologna, in Italy, and Enzo Baranecia is currently in talks to go out on loan to Valencia in Spain. So it's ah a weird one with both those players seemingly not in Emery's plans for this year, but I think it's a deal that over the next two or three years we'll see how successful those players are going to be. um The DRB deal, I think, was a case of I think it's a reported 65 million euro fee. It's a fee that after one year um being here after we bought him in from leather coups and we made something like 15 million euro profit. and And he is a big attacking threat. Nine goals in the in all competitions last year is something that we have to account for. But I think with the profit made, it's sort of a figure we couldn't really turn down. And then our income is, as you you mentioned, that are being the the main sort of standout players played.
00:09:13
Joe
We started both the games, both our opening games and and looked a sort of class above. He's a physical presence, a set piece threat and on the defensive end he provides a sort of um a figure and a strength that we haven't really had in his size and stature over the last few years.
00:09:31
officialgspn
Yeah, great. it' It's really interesting. And yeah, DRB was a big player, Louise, even more important every number of years. So, Anana's made a very good start. um And you're right, it was interesting from a neutral perspective to see the the Louise deal. And then, yeah, as you say, the both of the players that have come in um at the moment aren't being used or aren't going to be, and and one has gone out and the other one's going to go out but yeah we will see the impact some of the other guys make as the season goes on. So over to you Jay for some questions about Leicester.
Leicester City's Recent Performance
00:10:43
Joe
Yeah, um I think my first question, obviously your start for the season, you had an impressive one-all draw with Spurs and then ah a difficult defeat at Craven Cottage at Fulham. What was your kind of assessment of those two games?
00:10:58
officialgspn
Yes, it's been ah a strange start, in some ways probably more positive than a lot of fans expected, the the point against Spurs was obviously a great point, um ah not a good first half performance but a very good ah second half especially after we got the equalising goal um and then Fulham we saw more of the same of the first half, um it was a A tight game in spells in terms of Fulham not being able to always break us down but we didn't really offer anything going forward and the goal we did score was obviously off a corner um and and generally we didn't look like scoring another goal um in the second half period. which when you
00:11:36
officialgspn
a goal down with what 20 minutes left, it's disappointing we never created anything really which is a ah worry because we struggle to score goals in pre-season and generally ah teams who struggle to score in the Premier League and it says does what it says on the tin, you struggle and if you've just come up then we're going to find it hard to to get the points required to keep us up.
00:12:00
Joe
Yeah, and I think especially that Fulham game, is it a concern for Leicester fans that both Smithrow and Iwobi's goals came down the same side? Is that a ah problem area that maybe Villa could look to exploit on Saturday?
00:12:14
officialgspn
Yeah, great question. um Yeah, definitely. ah James Justins played right back in in both games. um and And to be honest, both goals did obviously come down his side. The first one was ah ah more of an overload in terms of, and Smithro beat him in a 1v1. The second one, and if you watch it back, Justin actually jumps out of his position. And it's a quick ball round. And you've got Harry Winx trying to chase away, which is a bit of a mismatch. He almost gets there. But yes, I think the second one was more of a tactical thing.
00:12:41
officialgspn
um It is definitely a concern. Villa have got a number of good attacking players across cross the pitch, to be honest, and across the squad. So yeah, it's a threat for Villa to look at, trying to get him behind, and having Abdul Fattawi in front, who isn't going to come and defend so much, um you could possibly double up with Digna getting down that left-hand side for Villa.
00:13:05
Joe
Yeah, and I suppose with with that in mind, how do you expect Leicester to set up to play Villa on Saturday?
Leicester vs Villa: Match Strategy
00:13:12
officialgspn
Yeah, so so far we've played a 4-2-3-1 in both games, so Buena Notto's coming from Brighton, has played behind Jamie Vardy, and but Jordan Iu's just coming from Palace, so there he played last night and scored in the Cup against Tramet, there's quite a good chance he could well be in the team, Vardy is still obviously not fully fit, and he's getting himself ready for the game and playing, and he's doing a great job of that and it's it's Jamie Vardy, but that can't last forever, and Iu could well play in either of those positions um but probably yes so 4-2-3-1 or possibly brings Ollie Skip in there somewhere to make a three-man midfield which is quite defensive. ah What's it quite interesting last night we saw Ran on Saturday Wilfred indeed playing off the striker which I'm sure any neutral who's listening is going to be very surprised because Leicester fans are surprised
00:14:04
officialgspn
to be honest with you ah he played higher up last season so he he obviously was that you know set in front of the back for midfielder and then last season he played much higher it's box to box and now suddenly he's playing off the striker so it hasn't been taken particularly well by fans if i'm honest there's a lot of negativity around it um maybe it'll surprise us he scored last night playing in that role maybe it'll surprise us on saturday
00:14:29
Joe
Yeah, and you mentioned a a few of the names there. Lester have been quite active, obviously, coming up in the transfer market, Olly Skip coming in, Jordan Ayu, Bobby Reed, Fatah, on a permanent deal.
00:14:41
Joe
And Buenanote, I'm going to say, from Brighton. You have to correct me on the pronunciation now.
00:14:46
officialgspn
no that's good well we needed players first and foremost we needed players to improve the squad and i think what we've what we've bought has improved the squad i'm not sure it's improved it enough to possibly stay up you know time motel will tell we'll see um and the money we've spent on a couple of them ollie skip
00:14:48
Joe
What have you made of the ah the the transfer business so far?
00:15:10
officialgspn
has has had limited, you know, he's had 21 minutes at Fulham, whatever it was, and and I haven't, I only saw him last night against Tranmere in person, but 25 million, if you include the add-ons, 20 million if you don't. Personally, I think it's too much. I would have said he's a 10 to 15 million pound footballer. He might prove me wrong, and I hope he does, but I think we've spent too much on him. Deco David Reid was a free, um hasn't started,
00:15:38
officialgspn
particularly well because he's keeping Mavididi out of the team, so fans are a bit disgruntled because Mavididi is a very different type of player and is being kept out of the team by somebody who isn't quite as attacking threat.
00:15:49
officialgspn
For Tyler Wu, fantastic player, a great signing and hopefully will really show that this season, no matter where we finish, he will really show himself and he has a really high ceiling. i think um Yeah and then Buenanotti and Ayu are two of the more recent ones. Buenanotti is a fantastic young player. I can see why Brighton wanted him to get minutes but equally why they don't want to sell him because he has a fantastic future no doubt. And Ayu probably is a similar case of spending too much money.
00:16:19
officialgspn
um ah but a better player than people probably giving credit for but doesn't tend to score many goals or get many assists and we could end up spending 8 million quid on him which i can't remember exactly how old he is it seems too much to me of
00:16:33
Joe
Yeah, he's a player, Jordan, that Villa fans will ah know very well from his time here.
00:16:38
Joe
Looking a little bit more generally, it's been a a summer of of change for Leicester, obviously, with Maresca leaving and and Cooper coming in, and then from outside perspective, losing probably your most technically gifted player in Dewsbury Hall.
00:16:50
Joe
What effects that had, both on the on the the supporters looking sort of inwards and on on the team as well?
00:16:57
officialgspn
Yeah, I think, um, Dewsbury Hall's really disappointing for Leicester fans because he's ah he's a local lad. He didn't really want to leave. Um, he's one of the few players over the years that we've sold to Chelsea and we've sold quite a few that I genuinely think didn't want to leave. It's a ah PSR issue, um, and the club couldn't afford to fail it yet again, uh, which we've got many issues with that already. Um, but he had to leave, uh, disappointed, obviously, go because you're quite right. Fantastic player. Um,
00:17:25
officialgspn
probably I would have said our second best or second most important I should say player last year behind Riccardo Pereira and one of the interesting things we've seen from Maresco leaving is so far Pereira hasn't played a minute in the league whereas he played every single minute available last year was vital um Cooper for whatever reason at the moment doesn't want to pick him or or give him an opportunity um we might see that change ah we talked about James Justin obviously Struggling a little bit some tactically some on a one-to-one basis so far from what we've seen so maybe Ricardo comes in there, but Yeah, so that's that's something we've seen from rescue leaving generally fans were Okay with him leaving because we've got a good fee. I think they were a bit disappointed. He didn't stay longer um and Cooper wasn't brought in with too much positivity because of the X not in forest and because he isn't somebody that brings lots of
00:18:23
officialgspn
inspiring confident shall we say um and the people were very quick on Saturday once we lost to Fulham as a lot of football fans on social media are to point the blame up Steve Cooper which I think is very harsh because um some of the tools that he's working with probably aren't quite good enough at the moment.
Fans' Perspectives and Injuries
00:18:41
Joe
Yeah, and I suppose kind of going back to to Saturday, my final question in this segment, is there a particular player that you look at as an opposition fan in that villa side that that particularly scares you?
00:18:54
officialgspn
well all of them in in some ways because I really admire Villa's team and and you know you did you didn't finish fourth by accident by no you know nobody does but by no stretch did Villa finish in a false position because they were I thought really really good last season especially against some of them top teams and I enjoyed watching Villa a lot last year because we weren't in the league watching games from a proper neutral perspective of not worrying about the top or bottom or whatever um Olly Watkins is easy to say because he's a great player and if he's on it then he's always a threat but ah Morgan Rogers is the one that's getting people talking because he's he's just getting those first few games.
00:19:33
officialgspn
I know he played a little bit at the back end of last year but um he's someone that he could have had he should have had an assist on Saturday for Watkins first. um Was it his shop for Watkins header that came off the bar?
00:19:45
Joe
I think it was a deflected Onana shot if i my memory serves me correct, that kind of came off the bar.
00:19:45
officialgspn
ma i thought oh
00:19:51
officialgspn
i I've made that one up then, but yeah should he should have had an assist for for that first one to Watkins. But yeah, him, um just I think probably is where you midfield in. indeed, in the other guys. You've got lots of players in key areas, but yeah, Watkins and Rogers, um once it clicks, could be a real ah interesting duo that we might see this season.
00:20:16
Joe
Yeah, absolutely. I think Roger's ability to to pick the ball up and and drive at people has definitely sort of um made headlines, especially against Arsenal, picking the ball up. And I think he was causing Declan Rice a lot of problems um and and attacking that back line really well. We're going to go to a quick message, courtesy of the Global Sports Podcast Network now.

Joe
I'll hand it back to you now, Jake. Do you want to go through the lineups?
00:21:13
officialgspn
Yeah, I mean, Lester, it's, as I say, Jordan, I use skips come in, so we might change it around a little bit, but I don't think there'll be loads of changes, realistically. I use skip, are the two I would look at, possibly Mavadidi, but generally what we've seen so far will probably be the base of the team.
00:21:35
officialgspn
I would quite like to see Mavadevi play because he's a bit more attacking, um but I think Cooper respects balance and and trying to get the best out of all of his players by bringing defensive balance to allow the team to counter attack. An early skip would definitely help with ball retention, which so far we've really struggled with.
00:21:56
officialgspn
And something I admire a lot about Unai Emery as a coach is he's he's great at setting his teams up to press and being incredibly clever. um And if if we can't keep the ball for longer periods than we've seen so far, you you will have all of the ball and it will make it really difficult for us, especially if we end up chasing the game. um From a Villa perspective, what are you thinking team news wise?
00:22:18
Joe
um I can't see any changes of personnel necessarily by choice. I think the only position that's up for contention is the right back spot. Matty Cash picked up a a hamstring injury in the defeat at Arsenal and it's reported he's going to be out for around a month. um He was um brought off in that game and Kostan Nedralakovic came on, the 18-year-old right back who was brought in in the winter window last season and then loaned back to the club red star Belgrade if I'm correct and he played the second half of the season um back there. ah He came on and looked relatively sharp for an 18-year-old lad making his his first Premier League appearance. He didn't look necessarily out of his depth. I think we've seen in the past Emory also likes to maybe push Kanza out to that right back spot and put a Diego Carlos in at centre half but he's also a man that ah um understands balance and I think
00:23:14
Joe
Especially going forward, having Nedjilukova to right back will give us a little bit more going down that right hand side than maybe Konza would. When Konza steps in that role he does feel to me at least like a centre back doing an okay job at right back rather than ah a designated right back who's going to give you a little bit down that right side going forward.
00:23:33
Joe
um As far as other elsewhere on the pitch, I can't see any changes. I think it it will sort of be that that back four of Nedjilukovic, now Konza, Torres and Dina, with two holding midfielders of Onana and Tealumans, which less the fans I'm sure will know and respect his work.
00:23:53
Joe
with John McGinn, Morgan Rogers and Leon Bailey behind Ollie Watkins up front. So hopefully um it will be a game that Watkins can use his running and stretch that back three that Lester have. and Hopefully his running will will allow pockets of space to open up for Bailey and Rogers to to drive into. And I think if we do get any success going forward, which hopefully we will, I think that will be a big part of it.
00:24:21
officialgspn
Yeah, it's interesting you bought Urie Tillman's. I hadn't even ah thought of him so far, which is bad of me to say really, because I hope he gets a very good reception on on Saturday. we've We've already had James Madison come back as an ex-player and he got a more mixed one, whereas Urie Tillman has obviously scored the winner in the Cup Final when I was very lucky to be there. And that that's one of my best days as a as a football fan, as a Leicester fan um and I'll certainly be very pleased to see him back as as long as he doesn't score or make an assist because ah I know how good he can be on his day and yeah he's he's definitely a big threat when he's on it.
00:24:57
Joe
Yeah, out of interest um in that that, when he's his time at Leicester, um Villa fans now we see him as somebody who sits alongside O'Nana as a sort of a holding, almost sort of a deeper number eight role. Is that a similar role that you played at Leicester? Was he allowed a little bit more sort of free roam attacking wise?
00:25:15
officialgspn
Yes, he he played a few different roles in that midfield for us. ah His main role throughout it was is as chief creator from a more deeper point of view to get it off the back four or to to pick the ball up in deeper areas in create and and it didn't really matter at any point for throughout his time. that That always seemed to be where he ended up and we did simply hire at at the start and he actually almost dropped back a little bit um and one thing we found with him was he he looked slower as he got on he looked um less tired maybe tired is the word I'm looking for I don't know fatigued it was always really strange he would start seasons very well end up looking quite fatigued at points and you're thinking you need to rest he would never be given one um by any of our managers either Rogers or um
Player Comparison: Tielemans Then and Now
00:26:06
officialgspn
Dean Smith or even I think Claude Poel was in charge when he joined. So he was under three, manages worse in it. He never seemed to to change. He always just played and played and sometimes would look incredibly fatigued. But ah yeah, I think a similar role to what he plays at Villa, depending whether we played a three or a two, if you like, ah a Villa obviously played Roger's a bit higher up at the moment. But yeah, yeah um a similar role in terms of getting on the ball.
00:26:32
Joe
Yeah, absolutely. And I think to to kind of ah to to finish in terms of predictions, if we're going to get the ah the crystal ball and and try and predict what will happen on Saturday, what what are your what you going for?
Match Predictions and Closing Remarks
00:26:46
officialgspn
ah So far on both of the the crossovers I've done so far I've been quite negative and almost had to be persuaded to be more positive and I'm st struggling again I'm going to be honest because I respect Villa a lot but um I'm going to go a bit more positive and and again the best I'm going to do which I've actually done in all three games is go for a 1-1.
00:27:05
officialgspn
and hopefully we in a nice way we see Watkins at the form we've seen so far because if he is on it and taking his chances then I'm sure we will see him get a couple on Saturday and it may maybe the game will depend on whether he takes them or not. What about yourself?
00:27:19

Yeah, I think you summed it up really well. I think it's a game that that's hopefully made for Ollie Watkins and I think it will be very dependent on his form. um I think in in terms of what we expect is, is I think I speak for the fans when it's a game we expect to win. It's a game that we feel like we need to to win. um And I'm going to try and and be optimistic and go,

a 2-1 win. I think it will be a ah much more difficult game than I think some people are anticipating. I think, Lester, you know, I've got a lot of respect for the, particularly the back line. I think FaZe and Vesta guarded two big physical presences. um I can imagine they're going to be tasked with marking Onana from set pieces, which takes a big offensive threat from away from us. um But yeah, I think I'm going to go 2-1.
