New Manager Prospects for Leicester
00:00:10
Speaker
hi everyone welcome back it's Lydia here from the daily Brantford and today i'm joined by Jake from the daily luster how are you today jake Yeah I'm good, i'm ah I'm feeling a little bit more positive with hopefully a new manager on the horizon, whether that's before Saturday we'll see. But I'm also excited to talk about Brentford and hear about your start to the season from a Brentford fan and hear what your thoughts are really.
00:00:35
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. and um So we'll move on at the end. We'll give our all-important school predictions as well, but I think it should be exciting on Saturday. We'll see, we'll see. um Just a reminder to everyone listening, we are a new podcast, so please give us a review and a share on your socials, as that would be much appreciated. So um as you mentioned, a bit of big news.
Impact of Potential Managers on Team Dynamics
00:00:57
Speaker
um it's like It's not 100% set, but it's looking like Rude van Nisslevoit is going to take over from Steve Cooper. and um Obviously we saw his brief time at Manu looking off the Manu, quite positive things. It seemed like he got the team to gel a bit more. and improve the morale of the fans, I guess. So what are your thoughts about this? I know you said it's positive, but were you surprised? Just to touch on Steve Cooper briefly, maybe I was shocked that he went so soon, but I was relieved that he's gone. I think we need something different. I think from the start, it never quite clicked fully. And certainly in the last few games, the players and him,
00:01:45
Speaker
don't look like they jailed well.
Challenges in Leadership and Team Cohesion
00:01:47
Speaker
So um in terms of options, we were a little bit limited, I think. And I think Vanisteroy probably was one of the top options that we had. But with that, it is a risk for sure. and He did well over his few games for Manchester United. Although two of them were wins against us. So ah based on how we've been playing, I don't think that's that difficult. So Yeah, it will is a risk. um Before I came on air, I had a chance to have a little bit of a look at some of the the things he did at PSV. And you never quite know what he's going to implement because it's different players, different league. um But it looks a little bit more like what we saw under Maresca at the championship, ah as opposed to a completely different style under Steve Cooper. um So hopefully it's going to be a little bit more exciting to watch, yeah but also more structured and solid um than what we saw under Steve Cooper.
00:02:40
Speaker
Do you think that's where like Cooper mainly went wrong, trying to implement something like completely different? Do you think that's where he lost kind of the backing of the players? Yes, it's a great question and it's so it's so hard to to tell as ah as a fan and someone from the outside. I think some of the decisions in around in games or in and around games, I think some of the players didn't like, you could see visible frustration in some games which and If you can see it there, then obviously there must be stuff going on behind closed doors. By what has come out, Jan Ivestergaard was banned from training for a period. He disappeared from the team from sort of September, October, yet played every game for Denmark. 90 minutes in both and both matches of both in international breaks. So clearly something there was off because that that is strange. um And he wasn't the only one. We've heard stories afterwards. um So yeah, maybe maybe it was a tactical thing.
00:03:37
Speaker
possibly um but look we've
Leicester's Financial and League Standing Concerns
00:03:40
Speaker
kept one clean sheet all season and the structure of the team was a big issue in games so and that never improved or got better the structure on saturday i think that one clean sheet well i can't believe that Manchester City have only got two i found out the other day which blew my mind so yeah maybe that says more about the league than us but yeah it just it felt so frustrating conceding every game and conceding so many good chances so Yeah, I'm hoping more structure will help. No, that's good. and um So I guess it's kind of similar, but what do you think Von Nissleroy's biggest challenge will be? Yeah, it's in the short term, a clean sheet structure, like we just said, ah in the long term, we've got to stay up this season. If we end up getting relegated, we're going to be in big trouble. I think the EFL, like the Premier League, are gunning for us. they're They're all wanting to chuck the buck at us. And the EFL have more than one or two reasons to do that from last time. So if we end up going down, financially, we'll be really struggling. So yeah, long term, try and stay up short term. Just get a team on the pitch.
00:04:47
Speaker
ah That also connects with the fans as well well. That was a big issue with Steve Cooper. I think all fans want to see that. No, that makes sense. um So I guess would you sum up the last few seasons as frustrating as a fan? Crazy, crazy chaos. Just that sort of sums up Lester, doesn't it? Like from the inside and the outside of of being a fan and for others, obviously the story and the journey has been incredible. um and And then those bad moments as well, not just being relegated, obviously but obviously with the chairman and what happened, it's been
00:05:22
Speaker
such an odd, crazy story that I wouldn't change for the world, but I'm obviously so frustrated that we we threw away such a good position in terms of league and finishes feet for consecutive years to get relegated almost so and like needlessly. um And then we just about won the league last year, that was really touching go towards the end. So yeah, every year has just been up and down. We've rarely had a um a boring season, if you like.
Van Nistelrooy's Managerial Challenges
00:05:51
Speaker
So I'd take a nice boring season this year where we've come 14th, but I don't think that's going to happen based on what I've seen so far.
00:05:58
Speaker
I don't think it will be a boring Saturday either, definitely not. I'm expecting lots of goals. isn't that asked yeah i am I guess, so we did sort of touch on this before, but so you thought that maybe it was, you were surprised at how quick Leicester acted on getting rid of Cooper. um But I guess, yeah, it remains to be seen.
00:06:18
Speaker
whether it was the right decision. I think it probably was like from an outside perspective. Yeah, yeah I guess we probably won't see von Nisslroy on Saturday. It seems like too soon. Yeah. um But don't really know much about your team coach. No need to lie, to be honest. So we're we're all in the dark on that one. I think it'll probably be a similar sort of setup than what we've seen. I wouldn't expect anything anything drastic. and Keep it nice and steady. Try and I think after, I mean, look, for for anyone who hasn't seen it, the the players went on a the less players went on a team Christmas party after the Chelsea game in Copenhagen and anyone who hasn't seen it, there's a sign they're holding which says Enzo, we miss you miss you or, you know, something to that that effect. So I have a feeling the players are going to be a lot more motivated on Saturday and suddenly have a much better performance. so yeah um yeah ni But it did make me worried as well. Oh, like bounce back.
00:07:13
Speaker
i It's got to happen sooner or later, because the last few

games we've been shocking, so a fingers crossed as a Leicester fan. I hope we're not the victims, but I feel like there is a chance, especially after the, yeah, the picture they saw from that party was funny. But yeah, I love waking up on Twitter. It's always a random thing. Like, I don't know if you saw, haven't had a chance to talk about it on the Brentford Pod yet. Born of our players, Cavallio, his dad,
00:07:42
Speaker
commented on our like team post after I came with everything saying like you need to leave, so I was like oh no I wouldn't be like eye on the wall when he's like telling his dad like did you mean to put this out loud?
00:07:56
Speaker
yeah yeah luckily i mean we've had lots of crazy moments i can't think of anything social media in terms of like family other than the obvious one with Jamie Vardy and his wife who loves loves being in the news shall we say so um yeah now i understand that one of of seeing social media going mad about something that's been put out there on the club or by the club i want to see i think Everything I hear about Leicester, there's always a mention to Wagatha Christie. Yeah, yeah. but but we We try and get away from it, but um I'm a celebrity at the moment, which is obviously on there. Making some comments on that, so yeah, she's been back on my mind.
00:08:41
Speaker
haven Didn't really fancy watching the Wagatha Christie musical. ah but I'm assuming you obviously didn't watch that either. It's not on my watch list, I'll be honest. you know if If I'm really struggling for Christmas TV, then then maybe I'll i'll give it a watch, but I wouldn't have thought so. Definitely not. So for some ads and then afterwards, I guess we'll we'll talk more about our previous meetings and what we expect on Saturday. Every club.

the Global Sports Podcast Network. Hey, welcome back, everyone. um Quick question, Jake. Will you be there on Saturday or? Unfortunately not, no. I try to go to as many away games as possible, but i I'll be honest, that the London ones I tend to avoid, which in the Premier League is difficult because there's so many London clubs, so unfortunately now unfortunate won't. um I've got friends who are going who will give me a ah good description of how the game goes, ah good or bad. Yeah, i you know what, I said it before, I think
00:10:45
Speaker
you know, the team will have like a revitalised spirit. And I was looking back, realised we haven't beaten you since we were promoted to the prams. That's maybe another worrying statistic.
00:10:57
Speaker
um I'm surprised at that. ah I'll be honest, i I didn't. It wasn't something that's, look, I suppose when it's, we have Bournemouth, for example, Crystal Palace off top of Melbourne, we went a long time without beating them. So you have those clubs on the flip side that you'll think about. But yeah, it wasn't um something that even crossed my mind when, um yeah, that that does surprise me to hear. Yeah.
00:11:19
Speaker
I think the one thing we have got in our favour, we are like this season, I've been impressed with how good we've and like how solid we've been at home. And yeah, we're yet to lose our home this season. So would that scare you coming up to Saturday?
00:11:35
Speaker
Um, at at this point, I'm so used to us being the underdog in every game that, um, yeah, look, it's, it's certainly something to take into account. Like your home form generally, uh, you know, as a neutral has been great. I would have fought throughout the premier league seasons. It's a really tough place to go. Um, I think the first time we we went there in the league, um, I remember we, we ended up coming away with a win, uh, but we got absolutely.
00:12:01
Speaker
battered for most of it. and And we were under so much pressure. And then just one screamer from Tillman's and then we scored a breakaway goal and nicked a win. But yeah, every time we've played there, it's not it's not something I look forward to. I think it's going to be a tough game, which I think most teams think, to be honest. Yeah, I'd say I think have you but I don't know if you've been to the season to the stadium like in person. No, it's one of the ones i've I'm trying to tick all the grounds off and it's one of the ones I haven't done yet. So I need to at some point.
00:12:30
Speaker
I think the fact that it is obviously so small, um but yeah, the sound obviously carries. and I mean, obviously I'm biased. I do love it there. It's not quite the same as Griffin Park, but I do think there is always a good atmosphere. So yeah, I'm looking forward to Saturday. So going on to Saturday as well, what Brentford players do you think will be the toughest to play? Like who are you looking out for?
00:12:56
Speaker
And Buemo is obviously like the obvious one to say they're brilliant player, having a very good season, Jair Whistler as well into, you know, those attacking areas. I've just seen Christian and all gods had his record rescinded. I was so happy with that. Yes, so I'm gutted because I know he's really important and like he's one of those really unsung players that I'm sure nobody really talks about, but really key He's definitely one of our, like, reliable players. I think he's, yeah, I mean, he's pretty much i always our captain and, yeah, he's quite like... It it makes a big difference, yeah i like having players like that who are regular play every game. um so
00:13:39
Speaker
Yeah, I know it's going to be tough when you have that spine of the team that's so regular. And that's what teams like Leicester in our current position are missing in in terms of that reliability and that consistency. And that's what really helps you in terms of pushing you up the league positions, I think. Yeah, because um am I right in saying that Winx is not and he's still injured?
00:14:00
Speaker
Well he seemed to be enjoying that party in Copenhagen so I don't know to be honest. He went he went off after 9 or 10 minutes against Chelsea and and yeah it was a big blow, a massive blow and there hasn't been much news of it so we'll we'll see. He was fine to travel to Copenhagen so I'm hoping it's not too bad because if he's out for a while he'll be are quite frustrated that they've gone and done that. Yeah, because I was going to say he was probably one of our ones to look out for, and El Canoose as well, going forward. But yeah, as I said before, haven't had a clean sheet yet, defensively. That's probably where my frustrations lie as a fan so far this season. So yeah, Sumari as well, I think. Really? Wow, that's a surprise speech. He's like,
00:14:49
Speaker
He's not even like Marmite, he's just so, this is awful, he's so disliked by Leicester fans. Is he? Yeah, he's... I think it's because I have him on my fantasy. I think he's one of those ones like, um budget, like...
00:15:07
Speaker
yeah point scorer so maybe that's clouded my judgment he's um he's been here oh this must be i think his fourth season now he's been he was out alone last season but he's never hit any sort of heights he there's clearly a player in there and we saw that actually in chelsea and last couple of games he's played quite well and Yeah, and it's so frustrating because it's clearly a player in there. However, I've been the tempo of of the Premier League He's actually admitted an interview. He said the temper the Premier League something's not used to I just don't think he's up to that tempo He wants to play a game at a different pace. You can see that um And he really I think has to exert himself to to reach that pace, but he is a good player on his day. Just so frustrating. So yeah Not someone I would have picked out. Actually, that's different a different shout.
00:15:53
Speaker
Well I guess, maybe I'll have to re-evaluate my fantasy team. I would will say, he might score on Saturday, I mean a doubt it, I doubt it would score, but you never you never know you know, he might do something on Saturday now we've said it. Do you think, um like so we'll move on to actual school predictions in a minute, but do you think that there's a chance that your five match win this run will end this weekend?
00:16:16
Speaker
um I guess there's always a chance for whatever. Yeah, yeah we've we've picked up points in games this season that you know taught them at the start of the season, um lots of matches which I didn't think we would or we would turn her down at Arsenal until the 90 whatever minute we've got it back to two or one, you know, it it was a bit cruel there So there's been a lot of games this year. We've been well in and We've only felt scoring one match. So and Yeah coupled with your defensive record. That's I would like to think we will score at some point unfortunately then coupled with ours again, it seems like we're gonna concede at some point and and generally I feel like some games when Brentford score that they rack it up like quite quickly very good at and
00:17:00
Speaker
spells of the game have really. yeah We have not been full of spells this season. yeah then we It's always like those pockets of the game and then ah first minute that first minute That's what I'm most scared about. I'll be checking my phone and try and trying to follow it for the first minute just to make sure we can, we can pass that. We might be okay after that. that was obviouslyly weird couple of i was ever entertain ah ah ah So I'm going to go with my school prediction of, I'm going to be optimistic say Brentford winning three, two, I think kind at least five goals. I'm just going to say there's going to be a lot of goals.
00:17:37
Speaker
Yes, I was thinking of 2-2, so I was going, ah you know, KG, like I normally am, based on our games this season and and trying to be as positive as I can, but yeah, I feel i agree. I think they'll be goals. i be I'd be so, so surprised. It's easy to say, but I'd be surprised if it's an 0-0 because and we we are being so poor at the back and and it's personnel really, as well as structure of the team. So I think you'll get chances. and ah But I also do think we will score at some point and it's that that hope of, can we solidify a little bit? We'll keep that attacking threat. We'll see on Saturday.
Favorite Football Memories
00:18:15
Speaker
Yeah, we'll see. um So I always like to end with the crossovers with a random question. Nice. So do you have a favourite away day memory? So I was thinking, thinking about this before. So the one I have to mention, it's not an away day, but I was so lucky um yeah to go to the court final when we played Chelsea. I was one of 10,000 because it was Covid and Oh yeah. And then I was thinking about it. I thought also Brentford obviously played at Wembley against Swansea at the playoff final in the same year. And again, there weren't many fans. So and general know what's treating I couldn't go even though my school, because it's obviously West London, you could see Wembley stadium. I could have got the bus there.
00:18:59
Speaker
well all of us be No, exactly. So that's why, so the the memory of Chelsea, not just we won, but the day and it had been a long time since I've been to a football. So I always, I had to say that because that was a great day and probably my favourite one off day ever watching football. So, um but as it a ah way game, I've I've been lucky ive I've been to a lot with Leicester and there's been some absolute shockers in there that I would never like to repeat but yeah there's been some some random ones. It's a funny story so we really really wrote. We played Sheffield United in the Cup probably ah done seven or eight years ago now and we ended up winning 4-1 and we were 3-1 up. it was it was a
00:19:38
Speaker
not enough in game but the game was done and we had a player called Ahmed Moussa some people remember maybe from FIFA or whatever he was very quick but didn't do very well for us but anyway he towards the end of the game we started chanting if Moussa scores were on the pitch Anyway, about ninety three, four minutes, he whacks one out of nowhere in the top corner, this unbelievable on the place to the out end, just erupted for like basically a completely meaningless goal because the game was done. and ah but I've never like everyone just went crazy. um And one lad jumped over and obviously tries to get onto the pitch and you can see students dragging away. But it's just this crazy moment that unless you were there as a Lester fan, no one else would would get and be like, why are they all going mad like the goal means nothing but yeah he's always stuck from here something I'll never ever forget.
Podcast Conclusion and Listener Engagement
00:20:28
Speaker
get That was a bit of like manifestation chanting going on. Yeah. Well I think we tried after with him but he didn't work after that. he He went back to his old form but he we always have that that one one night where he he did it in chef united so yeah random memory.
00:20:47
Speaker
always going to be one fan that did attend to vision made. so yes Yeah he was on his own and he almost looked back and remember him looking back at all of us almost like hold on you you said you'd get on the pitch like why aren't you? I'm like yeah yeah I think you you might have took it a little too literally literal power but yeah there we are. Well I think it was like maybe two months ago I can't remember what game it was. It was at home. There was some random, like, honestly, they looked about 11 picture pages. Because it was like one of the first one actually did it like in the first half. And I was like, okay, respect to you. The other two, this was at halftime. I was like,
00:21:27
Speaker
but There's no confidence in what's the point of getting, I don't know, your junior membership taken away to going at half time. So yeah, that was my recent experience. though I do. I love a pitch invasion um ah when, you know, you've been, there's been a promotion or something and I've been, I haven't been able to do one with Lester. Lester, you've never we've haven't like won the league or got promoted at home ah in a game but which is really odd for for all our major success which we've been amazing and a dream we've always done things away from home this is what's so odd we haven't played and then other clubs you know done whatever we needed them so um yeah we've never had a pitch invasion at at the king power throughout all of these things it's so whereas a lot of clubs have them and and i've been lucky i've ah
00:22:15
Speaker
ground hopped with clubs and done it and it's brilliant but yeah one day hopefully with Leicester we'll have a reason to to do it um which might be and another promotion from the Championship probably. Not winning the league again. Well you never know but it doesn't feel very likely right now.
00:22:33
Speaker
Not in the near future. Well, I hope that I get to see Brentford at Wembley at some point. I feel like that is just nerved, especially because I can see it while I could see it outside of school. That was just annoying. But thanks for joining me today. um I guess we'll see what happens on Saturday. Yeah, I think it will be exciting. Yeah, I i do. Hopefully um it's it's a good game and it's it'll be nice to see both Leicester and Brentford a bit further up on match of the day. So we'll see. Some goals might actually do it.
00:23:03
Speaker
I think they'll definitely be some goals, right? um For everyone listening, make sure again to share us with your fellow fans and yeah, to give us a review on Spotify. Thanks, see ya.
