Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome to another installment of the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. ah Today is crossover Thursday, so we're going to be looking ahead to Saturday's fixture um against Leicester at home at Celeste Park and to be helping me talk through our predictions and previews. We've got Wale Bakare, how are you doing Wale? Hi Alex, you're right, great to be on the pod tonight.
00:00:37
Speaker
Yeah, it's good to see you again, man. Haven't seen you for a while on on the pod, so bringing the dream team back, yeah. Yeah, I didn't realize that. I've just seen you now. I'm like, oh, that's Alex. Oh, that's been so long, mate. Yeah, still still knocking around, mate, unfortunately, for a lot of people, but still here.

Leicester's Media Representation and Performance

00:00:54
Speaker
ah Jake, how about, um and with we're joined, sorry, ill I'll do a better introduction. We're joined by Jake from the Daily Lester podcast as well. Jake, how are you doing, my friend?
00:01:03
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I'm good. I'm i'm excited to to hear your thoughts on Palace. Sometimes a club that I feel like doesn't get so much i know representation in in the media, so I'm excited to speak to some Palace fans and see what their thoughts are so far this season.
00:01:19
Speaker
Yeah, I think we're we're in a similar kind of standing, aren't we, Palace and Leicester? um You know, we're not always forefront. for yeah Yeah, mid to lower table sort of standing, I would say. And I don't think that's being disrespectful to either club. but knowing yeah So we're going to jump in just talking all things Leicester for the first part and then we'll move on to Palace and do some predictions to end. So Jake, um my first question to you is obviously there was a bit of change for you guys over the summer. You were promoted as champions from the Championship under Enzo Mareska. How did you play in some attractive football as from what I saw?
00:02:02
Speaker
But then he left for Chelsea and Steve Cooper came in a bit short notice. But how have you found the kind of transition into um life under Cooper at the King Power Stadium?

Leicester's League Expectations and Financial Challenges

00:02:14
Speaker
Yeah, great question that I think most and fans that you know I've spoke to on the pod or or off want to know is is obviously because we've we've been away for a year from the Premier League and there's less coverage. I've seen the championship and there's there's a big style change. Mariska did, you write, play a very certain style of football. um and obviously you played against him in the last game against Chelsea. and From what I've personally seen of Chelsea so far, I don't think he's implemented his style yet, although they've obviously they beat Wolves and drew yourselves. I don't think he's he's got that style implemented just yet, whereas with us it was very clear from the start.
00:02:54
Speaker
um Steve Cooper has similarities, um but it definitely is different and you can feel it. um I actually think fans, Leicester fans, I should say, are ah warm more warm towards Steve Cooper's football. um There's less ah slowness in possession. there is a less There is less possession in some games, but I think generally Leicester fans like to see the ball moved quicker. um And there there has been a warmness to the football so far, despite the fact we haven't won a game yet this season.

Team Performance Analysis and Expectations

00:03:23
Speaker
That's interesting to hear. um It sounds like it's not too doom and gloom, which it sometimes is, ah you know especially after you know the way you guys got promoted. Wylie, what have you made of Leicester's start to the campaign so far?
00:03:38
Speaker
Well, first of all, just like for most of the teams, aside from CT, Liverpool, Arsenal, Brighton, Newcastle, we've started great out of the blocks. For most of the teams, it's still very early days.
00:03:56
Speaker
after the track the first um international outbreak is when for some people they say oh it's it's time for real business and ah you know lot a lot of people will be looking out for ah you know what will happen but what will happen in the game you know this weekend. i just um and and It's quite interesting, you know it's a very ah important game for both sides considering the fact that just as you know we said earlier very close to each other on the table, ah pretty much has been the same um outcome for the two teams. um Leicester got that draw against Tottenham, ah lost the last two games. Palace lost the first two games, got that draw against Chelsea. I'm sure both teams will be going into Saturday's game saying to themselves, we need to get three points on the board. But
00:04:42
Speaker
you know iss It's just to what one of those games where maybe, just maybe, you might begin to see you know the what to expect from the two teams you know as as the season goes on. But after last season of the championship, I just wonder, and this is something that I was hoping to ask Jake, because I just wonder, you know for Leicester fans, you know there was the shocking league win then the Champions League experience, then winning the FA Cup. I remember the fantastic goal ah you know ah by Tillamans, winning need the FA Cup. And all of a sudden, Leicester's back in the in the Championship. and And we have to remember that before you know that run of you know great period for Leicester, the team was was battling survival in the Premier League. So I just wonder what
00:05:33
Speaker
expectation is like for Leicester fans because because you you've you lot have had some interesting times and you know after the season in the championship playing fantastic football you know winning almost against every team I just wonder what the expectation is you know for Leicester of Leicester fans for this season.
00:05:50
Speaker
Yes, so probably I think first and foremost, just to just to stay in the league, just to stay in the league, especially because there's been so much surrounding a points deduction, which obviously last week it was announced, you know we're almost certainly not going to have one based off the 22-23 season accounts. where It's almost certain that won't happen. We might still see one based off how much we overspent last year. um So I'm not totally ruling it out, but it's definitely a a massive win for the club.
00:06:19
Speaker
um because from bits and pieces I read it sounded like somewhere between a six seven point deduction based on that season um again we might see something similar still but anything 10 points or above is it's a long way back it for nearly promoted size almost impossible to stay up having taken away 10 points from teams totals over the last few years. So um I suppose expectations are just, can we stay in the league? um That's certainly where I'm at, 17th and above, fantastic. Because then it gives us an opportunity to build. um We've had Selkin and Jusby Hall because of PSR.
00:06:55
Speaker
and Which is really frustrating because he was probably our he was our first or second best player depending who you speak to ah The other one was Ricardo Pereira who interesting enough hasn't played a minute in the league this season and So, you know our two best players last year neither one isn't playing for us and and one isn't being picked um Yeah, it look we've we've had a an incredible history of of the last 10 years, 15 years. I've been going, fortunately enough, for a scene ticket for 15 years now. um I've seen all of it and it's just crazy. you know ah I wouldn't change it for the world apart from the fact the club's been mismanaged. um And we've got away with one, let's be honest. we big We've got away one without getting a point deduction. We've clearly failed the rules. we've We've found a bit of a loophole. um And Everton and Forest fans are not very happy around that. And ah I don't blame them, to be honest.
00:07:47
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting, Jake, your kind of ah perspective on the points deduction, because I think um a lot of neutral fans and fans of other clubs want other teams like the the book thrown at them, basically. um You know, there's that kind of like, as soon as there's wrongdoing, everyone jumps on the bandwagon. um But it's not always as cut and dry as as we kind of think it is. So it's good to get a ah fan's perspective of of what's going on there.

Player Evaluations and Transfers

00:08:14
Speaker
You mentioned a couple of player departures there.
00:08:16
Speaker
Dudesbury Hall obviously like a great player and in the championship just lit it alight so yeah it must have been hard to see him go but from the outside it looks like you guys have recruited quite well you know Oliver Skipps come in you've got Fatah Woo, a deck called Over Read you know um some Premier League quality players there and obviously a couple of Palace boys as well in Odds on Edouard and Jordan Iu Do you think, how how have you found the signings um so far for Leicester?
00:08:47
Speaker
ah Steady, I think, um in terms of... You're right, there's Premier League experience there. and Oliver Skip, I think, is probably overpriced. If we end up spending 25 million on him, I don't personally think he's worth it, although I've liked him and in the one game that he started against Villa. I thought he had actually really good game and impacted the team really well. and I'm just worried about the fee, because in the past, like most clubs, but especially in the last few years, if you look at our transfer windows, we've overspent on players. um and Generally, I think Premier League clubs do that, but but yeah I'm wary of that in that case. um Jordan, IU and Eduardo are interesting signings. If I'm honest, if you told me in you know June that they were the two strikers we were going to sign, I'd been really really worried. and I'm still a bit worried because I don't see either scoring enough goals um on their own. um
00:09:38
Speaker
I was a duo, if you like, whether they play together or not um to keep us up. But they are you actually as pleasantly surprised me with um his hold up play? I knew about his work rate, but he even actually quite how skillful he is. I've been very pleasantly surprised by ah you. um And obviously we haven't seen Edward yet and obviously can't play um in this game because he's on loan. So I'm looking forward to seeing him. And we did definitely need reinforcements. Dak is out injured now and Vardy is he's playing injured he's clearly not fully fit but once he gets on the pitch he he always gives us an opportunity to to to scare defence I guess.
00:10:16
Speaker
Yeah, again, it's interesting to get your your view on, um you know, the Palace boys joining and and some of the business that's being done. And yeah, I agree with you. Vardy has looked like he's playing sort of with yeah strapping and yeah, not 100%. So, you know, hopefully if if he does start on Saturday, hopefully he won't cause us too many problems. ah Right, guys, we're going to take a quick break there and hear from our sponsors and we'll be back to talk about Palace in the next section.

Hello, and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. We are talking all things Palace versus Leicester this weekend, which will take place at Celos Park. ah We're still joined by Jake from the Daily Leicester podcast, and he's gonna throw you some questions at me and Wale about Palace, and we're gonna do our best to answer them. Okay, so when you're ready, Jake, fire away.
00:11:46
Speaker
Yeah, great. Wylie, I'll come to you first. and I know you've mentioned, obviously, the first two games of the season, ah defeats against Brentford and West Ham and ah just interested to have a look to my notes and realise you've played all London sides in your first three games. I just want to hear your thoughts on the Chelsea game, really, obviously, that first point of the season.
00:12:05
Speaker
Well, but um but very important point, to to be honest, because um although three losses on a trot wouldn't have been the end of the world. But ah when you look at how the losses happened, um when you put all of the first three games together, um you you could make some argument for the fact that Palace maybe were even better ah in the in the first two games and against Chelsea. um If Pilots had lost a game against Chelsea, I'm sure a lot of Pilots fans would have felt, well, maybe ah you know ah the Eagles didn't play too well. but But seeing the first two games of the season, the the the chances just went coming off. It did appear like
00:12:44
Speaker
ah the boys were playing under some pressure. Maybe it was a pressure of the expectations because, you know, we've always said on the Daily Palace board that it did seem like after the last couple of games two towards the end of last season, a couple of Palace fans might have gotten in a bubble of, oh, maybe as Europe is possible. And then some of the things that, ah you know, the you know ah Steve Parrish said ah ahead of the start of the season, kind of made a a couple of Palace fans think maybe Europe was possible. But the first two games ah maybe um someone knocked common sense back into the situation, and everyone thought, well, maybe we need to dial down a bit as regards the expectations. But to answer your question specifically, the the point against Chelsea was very important. ah Chelsea ah did look like it was always going to be dependent on what Chelsea side turned up. I said that before the game.
00:13:36
Speaker
ah ah you know and um and that they just never really got going, ah you know, in that game. And once so the second half started, and Palis made the change of ah bringing Dokore on, ah kind of solidified the midfield, and Palis started winning the second ball. Bericiese was, you know, weaving his magic.
00:13:58
Speaker
And Dajakamada was you know doing great on the right wing. So once Palais were beginning to string some passes together, the boys had some belief. And thankfully, that fantastic goal by Eze happened. But at the end of the day, it's still very early days, you know to be honest. ah the The performance overall hasn't been the greatest, but it was nice to get the points against Chelsea. Maybe it will be three against Leicester.
00:14:23
Speaker
but Hopefully not, but yeah it's I certainly think it's going to be a difficult game for for us. and i just I just thought to throw that in, maybe you'd say, yeah. Yeah, I wish I could be a bit more positive, but yeah, no, I hate us going to Palace. I've been there numerous times in the weigh-in and and um yeah i've had I've seen some poor results and some poor Leicester performances, so ah yeah, i've I've been scarred from them. and Alex, a question for you. Ambitions for the season, so while I mentioned it there, the parish in pre-season mentioned a
00:14:58
Speaker
Looking at Europe. I guess I'm asking and what's your ambitions for the league season? Also possibly a cup run or something in one of the cups Yeah, so we're as a fan base, we're sort of a bit split at this at the at the moment. um You sort of have the younger generation who haven't been with us through the championship years and the dark days of like administration and that, who want us to push on and be more ambitious and throw loads of money at the team and just yeah try and get as high up the table as possible, um which I personally don't think is is realistic at the moment. um
00:15:37
Speaker
compared to when we were promoted 10 or years ago, the Premier League has become so competitive and every position that you gain is you know worth millions and getting into the top 10 even is would be a good achievement for us and I think that's the next step of where the club needs to go. um we haven't been, say, in Aston Villa, who've come up and shot straight into the European places. We've steadily built, you know, it might be another 10 years before we're looking at Europe or anything like that. And and to be honest, I'm quite happy with with mid table at the moment, you know, some people also say it might be better, you know, the football is better in the championship.

League Competitiveness and Transfer Analysis

00:16:17
Speaker
It's cheaper tickets and all of this. But
00:16:20
Speaker
the reality is and and you guys will know it's it's a tough league down there and um the sort of week in week out of playing gritty teams with worse football is a lot worse than playing in the Premier League so for me personally I'm happy with where the club is I think with Parrish he's so level-headed and he's ah he's a real fan of the club. He wouldn't let us go into any kind of ah financial difficulty or um like every time there's been a sense of relegation he's done something to pull it back. So I'm happy with him and I think with Glazna he is another ah stepping stone towards us you know pushing for a top 10 position. But if we got into Europe obviously I'd be ecstatic but
00:17:03
Speaker
I just don't think that's possible at the moment. So yeah, I'm cautious about Palace, but you know happy with where we are at the moment. Yes, it's interesting you mentioned the, you know, championship and that's obviously where we've come from. and And I'll be honest, the novelty of it wore off really quickly when we were playing ah like Rovrem and no disrespect to Rovrem or Plymouth or teams like that. But and playing them on on Tuesday nights, I was like, yeah, I miss playing Manchester United. although you You know, you might well get beat, you know, against those bigger sides. The novelty wears off and you can get swallowed up in that league really quickly. And and as our season went on,
00:17:39
Speaker
you know we we did drop off a cliff for for a number of games and and we were losing, especially actually a defeat to Plymouth really worried us that we weren't going to bounce back and and the financial implications just push you back so far. And that was why it was so important we went back up first time. One of my other questions, Wale, for you, just we've mentioned Kamada, but in Ketia,
00:18:06
Speaker
Ismaila Saar, a Riyadh, Lacroix who's coming from Walsbow right at the end. Obviously, you've not seen him. I just wondered, in terms of signings, ins and outs, what have you made of this summer for Palace? Well, to be honest, that at the end of the transfer window, I'm sure you know a lot of us were a lot more excited. ah It was looking a bit bleak. It did appear like a very long transfer window because Alisa left and then it went a bit quiet.
00:18:35
Speaker
And then the back and forth was about Marche. And then, you know, attention began to go to some players who no one expected to leave. Joachim Anderson left. um You know, Jordan Ayo left. And a lot of Palace fans were a bit, ah you know,
00:18:53
Speaker
were a bit anxious as to what was going to to happen. But in the last couple of days of the transfer window, but um you would you could say that you know the the club did some you know great business. Daichi Kamada coming on a free has been great so far. ah The fact that Markei stayed, the fact that Beri Tiese also stayed, that was good news for Palace fans.
00:19:15
Speaker
ah But as far as players that came in you know are concerned, Smiles, we know his story. um Great talent on his day, you know could whip some magic. ah Did that with what for the couple of times, but it could also be very frustrating, you know somewhat like maybe where Yannick Bolasi was you know back in the day, you know could could do could do the magic, but it could be also very frustrating. And that's the story of Ismaila Sa for me. But um um I'm quite ah you know i'm excited about the Edin Kecia prospect. He's a great worker. He's a good striker. He's got you know great attitude from Arsenal. That's a top team. You want players from top teams you know coming into your club. I'm just keen to find out
00:20:03
Speaker
you know what glass now will be doing with the fact that there's in kettie and there's uh matteta would he be looking at starting one or the other would he be looking at you know having the two and one of them working off the wing. It does seem like we might be seeing Glastner trying out different things because there's so many players you know that came in towards the end of the window. Will you expect to be starters? I'm expecting Maxis Lacroix is most likely going to be a starter in that back line. I expect that, you know, Edin Kettier, I haven't spent all that money to bring him from Arsenal.
00:20:34
Speaker
will most likely be a starter in that squad. So you you begin to, we will most likely begin to see you know different things, shape of four pilots in the coming games, but overall it was a great transfer window for the Eagles.
00:20:48
Speaker
Cool. ah Alex, one last question there before we go to an advert. Obviously, we've mentioned Jordan, are you in Edouard? And you've got a ex-Lester player who from for many years ago now, Jeff Schlop. And I just wondered what you thought of him. Obviously, he's been there, what, eight or nine years now. And um I just wondered what you thought of him in his time with Palace, really. Schlop's an interesting one. um he's He was, for a period, very reliable. and um one of our better players he had that he had a period where he would score you know really good goals and goals at vital moments there was one against City away where he just took it like perfectly on I know he's played centre forward in the past as like a filling but yeah he took he took that goal really well and that was a sign of his confidence then um the last couple of years he ah
00:21:40
Speaker
He hasn't really come up to the standard. I'd put him in a similar bracket to IU, if I'm honest. like um Fans have question marks about the ability and you know where we are as a club, whether we need these kind of players. um you know Obviously, he's a great player because he can play left back, center midfield, left midfield, center forward. So if you're looking to fill gaps, he's great. but If you're looking to control matches like we are under Glazner and press and you know do great things with the football, Schlup doesn't really fit into that mold. So um he's an interesting interesting player. He's had some great moments for us, but to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he left ah perhaps in January or at the end of the season.

Match Predictions and Closing Remarks

00:22:26
Speaker
and ah Right, guys, we're going to take a quick break again, and then we're going to do some score predictions in the final section.

Welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. I'm joined by Jake from Daily Leicester and Wale Bakari. We're just going to finish this podcast by now looking at some score predictions ah for the clash at Celerus on Saturday. ah So as our guest, Jake, we're going to come to you. And what do you reckon the score is going to be?
00:23:27
Speaker
um ah Yeah, I thought about this, you know before and and actually I think every time I've been asked on on the podcast I've said the same answer now, which I'm gonna go for a 1-1 draw Because based off our first two game her first three games, we should say to to one defeats and a one or draw we've had tight matches in all of them um and I think it would be too far too optimistic to to go and expect a win um and and I think of a draw based off also Palace's games in terms of they've been quite tight um fits sort of what we've seen so far. um I completely agree with Wale from earlier you know
00:24:03
Speaker
after the international break you actually see what sides are really made of, um which probably concerns me more than brings optimist optimism with the players Palace have got, but um yeah, I see if Cooper's spoke quite optimistically in the press conference and and hopefully um we'll we'll be up for it and and give a good account of ourselves. ourselves Yeah, a cautious prediction there, but you know, we both need points, so one-all drill would probably suit both teams. um Jake, who would your, you've said one-all, who do you think would score for Leicester?
00:24:37
Speaker
um I mean, it's easy to say Jamie Vardy, but um I'm going to go for somebody different. I'm hoping he's going to play Steffi Mavadide. He hasn't started any of our games so far, made a real good impact against Villa. And I'm hoping Steve Cooper is going to find a way to get him and the team with Vardy, with um actually with IU as well. I'm hoping IU will play, but on the right side this time. So I'm going to go for Mavadide because I think it's something different. And I think he's got a bit of a point to prove now. um So hopefully he's going to show that on Saturday.
00:25:06
Speaker
I'm glad you didn't say Jamie Vardy, because I remember when he scored against us, I think his last goal at Celer, he did the Stupid Eagle dance in front of the homestyle. I really liked him up until that point, but he does that everywhere he goes, so I wouldn't... He's stuff in personal. Yeah, I wouldn't feel special about it. He's just... I won't use the term here, but he's a bit of a toe rag, let's say. Wale, what are your school predictions for Saturday?
00:25:37
Speaker
Well, interestingly, I just had a 1-1 draw written down as well because I just wonder whether, ah you know because of the fact that it's after the international break, we know what it is, you know the first game after the international break.
00:25:54
Speaker
ah you know Some of the players have had long trips, depending on what the weather is like. if it If it turns out to be some sunny afternoon you know in London, ah it might just be one of those games where it starts slowly and then builds up eventually. But I do think it might turn out to be ah You know ah one old draw it's just one goal in the season for Let for Palace I think Lester's got three goals already this season so they've they've got some goals in them um Maybe just maybe might end up in a 1-1 as to we we'll get the goals Maybe Vadi
00:26:39
Speaker
maybe in Ketya that would be a great debut for him. Well, that's more that's more what I want, not no what will most likely happen. But I think it might be a draw eventually. Yeah, um it would be great to see in Ketya start. And if he got a goal in his debut, that would be even better. um Yeah, so I was thinking back to the previous meeting at Celes Park. It was Cooper and Roy in the dugouts, Nottingham Forest.
00:27:05
Speaker
um Nottingham Forest Palace last year, nil-nil, absolutely die a game, probably the worst game of the season. So hopefully Cooper doesn't bring such a negativity with him this time. um For me, I'm going to go for a 2-1 Palace. I think we've been building up to a result recently. And sorry, Jake, for if this comes comes true, but I think we will we might sneak at 2-1.
00:27:33
Speaker
um you know, Eze is looking great and I think he might get a goal. Mateta, yeah maybe, but you've you've got two big centre backs, so I'm not sure he'll get fast. He might run past them with his pace. Yeah, that's a good point. yeah If we can get some pace, we might be able to cause you trouble. but um I'm going to go with 2-1 Palace and hopefully we can get off the mark. That's our score predictions, guys. Jake, thank you very much for joining us today. Thank you, guys. I've really enjoyed it. Hopefully, mine and Wale's predictions come true and not yours, Alexis, but we'll see. To be honest, I somewhat knew it was going to go 2-1, so I thought, well, I'll make Jake feel good for 1-1. When Jake leaves the podcast, we'll be like, yeah, 4-0 Palace. We won't do that, mate, or any joking. And Wale, thanks for joining us, mate. Always, always more. Right, we've been the Daily Palace podcast, and if you have listened to this episode, could you give us a five-star rating, so that would really help. And thank you for listening, and we'll be back with you tomorrow for another episode.
